Trump Acquitted in Second Impeachment Trial Despite 7 Republicans Voting To Convict
Whether the reality-show-star-turned-first-president-to-be-impeached-twice has a future in American politics, however, sadly remains an open question.

Former President Donald Trump was acquitted by the Senate on Saturday as his second impeachment trial came to a conclusion.
Seven Republicans joined all 50 Democrats in voting to convict Trump, who was charged with having incited an insurrection by encouraging rioters to mob the U.S. Capitol on January 6. Despite the Republican defections, the final vote of 57-43 was insufficient to meet the two-thirds majority required to convict Trump and bar him from holding federal office in the future.
Still, the number of Republicans who broke ranks is significant—when the Senate voted on Trump's first impeachment in January 2020, Sen. Mitt Romney (R–Utah) was the lone Republican to vote for conviction. This time, Romney was joined by Sens. Richard Burr (R–N.C.), Bill Cassidy (R–La.), Susan Collins (R–Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R–Alaska), Ben Sasse (R–Neb.), and Pat Toomey (R–Pa.)
Those senators, and the 10 Republican members of the House of Representatives who voted to impeach Trump last month, clearly demonstrate the stark divide facing the party as it seeks a post-Trump identity.
The outcome of Trump's trial was never in much serious doubt, but Saturday did provide some late drama when five Republicans unexpectedly sided with Democrats in voting to allow witnesses to testify at the trial. The vote temporarily opened the door to a much longer impeachment trial—one that likely would have included even more damning evidence of Trump's role in fomenting the January 6th chaos. But shortly after the vote, Senate Democrats announced that they would not call witnesses after all, in an apparent attempt to bring the trial to a more speedy conclusion so the Senate can turn its attention to other matters.
That came on the heels of an explosive revelation on Friday night, when Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R–Wash.) publicly disclosed that Trump had rebuked an effort by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R–Calif.) to get the president to call off the rioters on January 6. According to Herrera Beutler, McCarthy said that Trump responded by saying that "I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are."

Herrera Beutler's account—along with other details of Trump's reaction to the events of January 6th as they were still unfolding—made a powerful case for the former president's conviction. As Reason's Jacob Sullum wrote earlier this week, Trump's refusal to call in the National Guard, his tweets and video message to the rioters on that day, and his refusal to unambiguously condemn what happened should have been enough to impeach and bar him from office even if he had no role in inciting the event.
Trump's defense team seemed to know there was little hope of clearing their client of the responsibility for the Capitol riot. Instead, they focused their defense on a weak First Amendment argument that completely ignored the main issue of the trial: whether Trump violated his oath of office by inciting the violence. No one seriously debates that the president has a right to say whatever he pleases, but that right does not absolve anyone of the consequences of their actions.
The other defense, and ultimately the one that probably kept more Republicans from defecting and voting to convict, was rooted in the idea that the Senate did not have the constitutional authority to convict a president who has already left office. That's also a poor defense—one that effectively leaves Congress with no recourse against a chief executive who breaks the law on his way out the door—but it was one that most Republican senators seemed to buy, or at least be willing to hide behind.
Now that the impeachment trial is over, the Trump era has come to a close. Whether the reality-show-star-turned-first-president-to-be-impeached-twice has a future in American politics, however, sadly remains an open question—thanks to a Republican Party that seems dominated by fealty to little else besides Trump's whims.

In a real court, a judge gets to decide whether to allow a party to re-open its case-in-chief and present additional evidence, even after both sides have concluded their arguments. Is it a habit with you to confidently assert things about which you have no knowledge?
A real court would have a judge presiding over it, not a partisan that already ruled guilty before the trial.

I think the biggest threats to the election, as of about June 2020 or so, was the bungled and inept responses of local election officials. Look how the Democratic primaries turned out. Ohio's had a super-low turnout even for a primary, Wisconsin's turned into a super-spreader event, New York's was so inept that they couldn't even certify a winner for weeks and weeks afterwards. But by time the general election arrived, they pretty much got their shit together. Whether it was because the election officials themselves learned from their mistakes, or because this "shadowy cabal" helped them out, or both, I don't really care. THAT was the biggest danger IMO, that the process itself would be so bungled that nobody could trust at all what was going on.

Among the first items on the Democratic party's agenda is election reform. I know, that probably sounds like a communist plot to you, and if you are in the GOP cult, it is bad news, but on the bright side, it's uncontroversially good for anyone who actually believes in democracy.
Republicans at some point (usually attributed to Newt Gingrich) decided that they were a tribe, not just a political alliance, and that this tribe had to have power at all costs. They made it harder for people in cities and on college campuses to vote. They won the presidency twice in my lifetime without actually winning any popular contest. They stack courts with far-right ideologues who hate democracy. They exploit the advantage rural citizens get to the last drop of unearned power. They targeted black neighborhoods and took away their polling stations without any justification other than the fact that they wanted to make it harder for them to vote.
I think a normal person would ask themselves how it could be possible that people as anti-democratic and morally dead could have good ideas about how societies and economies should be run. Maybe there's a flaw in my thinking, but I don't see any reason to think that good, evidence-based, socially conscious governing tends to come from political factions that seek power at all costs, including simply ratfucking truth until it's dead and bloody.
But maybe your pronouns are that important to you. It is culture war, after all. People like their culture, no matter how fucking stupid it is, because that's what they grew up with, and so few of us actually manage to stop thinking like children,

Enough Republicans did vote against Trump to make a significant statement. And that most Senators that didn't hid behind dubious arguments that the impeachment was unconstitutional or cries about due process rather than defend his actual behavior is also telling.
Most importantly though, how many House Republicans disagreed with Liz Cheney strongly enough on impeachment to vote to remove her from leadership when it was a secret ballot? Compare that to the relatively few Republicans in Congress willing to stand against Trump and Greene publicly and you see that the divide is hidden by a combination of ambition and fear. Most Republican politicians are either trying to hold onto your vote by refusing to condemn Trump or are afraid of losing a primary if they don't bow before Trump. You and your kind are the ones that made loyalty to Trump a litmus test for what it means to be a Republican. You can't use the fact that most Republican politicians fall in line with that as a way to suggest that the few with the political courage (or that are on the way out the door) are just a minor thing.
The Republican base loyal to Trump may be a large % of registered Republicans, but it is still well short of a majority of the national electorate. Republican politicians that don't want the GOP to be the party of Trump are stuck between how to keep the GOP together internally with how to win general elections in swing districts and states in the future. That is a very real division.

Disputes over whether election laws were followed correctly occur all the time, but the question then becomes what the remedy should be, even if the courts agree that procedures were violated. Courts are not going to throw out hundreds of thousands of ballots after the election without specific reason to think that the ballots were fraudulent.
