Berkeley Dorms Guarded by Cops Who Only Let Students Out To Eat, Use the Bathroom, or Get a COVID-19 Test
Plus: New Mexico moves to legalize homemade food, the illogic of civil commitments for sex offenders, and more...

Students at the University of California, Berkeley are paying for the privilege of living in police-enforced lockdown. The university, which is dealing with a surge of COVID-19 cases, has decided to use draconian means to make sure virus spread stays limited. "The self-sequester mandate for UC Berkeley students living in the dormitories, originally intended to end Monday, has been extended for another week, with stricter security measures in place to enforce quarantining," noted SFGate yesterday.
The new security measures include campus cops roaming dormitory halls looking for students leaving their rooms for unapproved reasons. The only permissible reasons to leave your dorm room at Berkeley are for meals, bathroom breaks, or getting a COVID-19 test.
Those reasons no longer include individual outdoor exercise as of this week. "We are working with the city of Berkeley to determine whether outdoor exercise may be permitted, and we will provide more information on this in the near future," the university told students.
Students found in violation of these rules face the threat of suspension and being thrown out of student housing. The mandate extends until February 15.
Aside from being bad for student morale and mental health, the scheme seems much more likely to lead to dicey encounters between campus security and students than to have any effect on public health.

Jacob Sullum on the illogic of civil commitments for sex offenders who have served their sentences:
The state punishes people who commit sex crimes based on the assumption that they could and should have controlled themselves. But when it is time for them to be released after completing the punishment prescribed by law, the state says that was not actually true; now they must be locked up precisely because they can't control themselves.

Good and Hard.
Are we supposed to be surprised that the neurotic brats of ultra-liberals attending Berkley are willing to lay on their backs and assist in the placement of the boot squarely on their faces? This is what they want for everyone, everywhere, all the time. The religion of Science! demands compliance. Their fear of their own punishment is completely subsumed by the sycophantic pleasure of reporting their classmates to the authorities.

Let's ask those students now how much they like "socialism".
Actually, let's not. I might get depressed when we learn how many students like being locked up because it makes them feel safer.

They are both - because in practice there is very little difference between socialism and fascism.

UCB has not only cancelled academic freedom, it has cancelled freedom itself with the excuse that "Berkeley students need imprisonment."
Hasn't that been true ever since the 1960's?
Students at the University of California, Berkeley are paying for the privilege of living in police-enforced lockdown.
I'm beginning to think the Floyd protests the past summer were just for show for some progressive centers.
The results of the Stanford Prison Experiment were inconclusive, Berkely is replicating the study... Science!
If it's one thing that prisons, nursing homes, and college dorms have proven, it's that keeping large numbers of people confined to the same limited space prevents the spread of that illness throughout their respective populations.
and to think, Berkeley used to be famous for being run by liberals.
they've gone full fascist now.
If Hillsdale College were doing this, the MSM would be all over it with charges of fascism But if a place like Berkeley does it, they're fucking heroes. It's all about what cause you represent, not about the repression.
I fear this is just mainstreaming what's to come our way, in the very near future.
I fear this is just mainstreaming what’s to come our way, in the very near future.
The shit that starts at universities eventually ends up in society, so yes, this is what's coming our way.
And Kirkland would be yelling "Carry on clingers."
I do wonder how this doesn't run afoul of illegal detainment laws.
they don't have to stay at dorms so its their choice. well maybe freshmen do but otherwise they are all free to go so its not illegal detainment.
"Free to go" as in no one is forcing you to live there instead of elsewhere, sure. But it doesn't read like you're free to come and go at will. Like when you ask the cop if you're free to go and he says no, then you ask if you're being detained and he says no to that too. If these are actual cops roaming the halls (and even campus cops are almost always real cops), and not just guys with a "security" windbreaker, then it sounds like a pretty shitty police state to me. Not that that's too far off what I imagine Berkeley to be like on any random Tuesday, though.
But it doesn’t read like you’re free to come and go at will.
If you want to stay in the dorms, you're not. If you don't want to stay in the dorms, they have no power over you.
Its not "detainment" if the frightened snowflakes voluntarily comply.
But when it is time for them to be released after completing the punishment prescribed by law, the state says that was not actually true; now they must be locked up precisely because they can't control themselves.
The state has had time to think about it.
So are the rest of us. Remember how you spent the entire last year agitating for lockdowns and mask mandates because you're a stupid cunt with no brain?
Self reflection is not her strength.
What a surprise, a state run by leftists is run like a police state.

Dear people expecting a relief check or vaccine:
We're busy.

Producing a Hollywood style video that shows just how Trumps words, cut in with the actions of the day, were the true cause of the incitement. Popcorn to be served along with the impeachment articles. What a sham!
I hear Michael Bay passed on the production because there were no giant explosions.
I’m sure AOC experienced an explosion at some point.
A kangaroo court to go along with the phony Reichstag fire, DC occupation army and eternal, vaccine-proof lockdown.
2020 and 2021 have been the worst years for American freedoms since the height of WW2. And unlike then the US isn't fighting total war.
...I wonder if Reason will notice?
Your “Reichstag fire” is a very straightforward situation in which Trump purposely scheduled a MAGA rally to happen at the same time and down the street from the Capitol, whipped the crowd up, then said he would march down to the Capitol with them (and then bailed on them). Members of that crowd broke into the Capitol and killed a police officer.
All your alt-right rhetoric will not change the simple truth. It was all captured on video and photos.
STFU cunt.
Time for your morning lies, huh?
There's no evidence that the officer was bludgeoned with a fire extinguisher like you've claimed many times. Even CNN admits that didn't happen.
There is video of a protestor tossing a fire extinguisher from above and behind the skirmish line between the Capitol police and the protestors.
https://youtu.be/uOP8UHpGn3s?t=29
But, I have not seen anything where this incident has been established as being related to the contention of the Capitol police that Capitol police officer Sicknick was struck with a fire extinguisher. You would think that the Capitol police would be able to figure out if Sicknick was one of the officers that were struck by this particular fire extinguisher.
Read the CNN article dummy. Then learn who makes the JSF.
And also you lie again. The common leftist narrative was Sicknick died from being hit with the fire extinguisher:
The circumstances surrounding Mr. Sicknick's death were not immediately clear, and the Capitol Police said only that he had “passed away due to injuries sustained while on duty.” At some point in the chaos — with the mob rampaging through the halls of Congress while lawmakers were forced to hide under their desks — he was struck with a fire extinguisher, according to two law enforcement officials.

Don't walk back your lies with claims of nobody said this.

You have outed yourself as one of the propagandists. Ching! Here's your $.50, you disingenuous cunt.
"Here’s your $.50, you disingenuous cunt"
I like that. I'm going to start using that.
You still believe a cop was beaten to death with a fire extinguisher. No reason to even debate with you. That reason and your utter dishonesty.
Besides that fact you ignore the preplanned efforts the FBI is pointing to; the fact the entering into the capitol started before Trump's speech finished; or the fact that it is a 1.5 mile march to the Capitol building from the speech.
Other than being completely wrong on every assertion you made, you are totally correct.
pre planned most likely with the help of the FBI wanna bet the FBI even told the police to open the doors so that they would have a reason to arrest protesters.
"Members of that crowd broke into the Capitol and killed a police officer."
...before Trump finished speaking, mind you...
...and there is literally zero evidence that the police officer was killed by anybody.
he marched down there "in spirit". a common phrase used all the time.
Yes except none of that extremist horseshit you just spewed even happened, fascist mouthpiece.
You're literally nothing more than a lying propaganda organ at this point, White Knight of the DNC.
And you're right, it was all captured on video and not a single frame backs up you're dishonest claims.
Hmm, now what was happening in the world the last time Congress played impeachment theater?

The example Machiavelli gives of the last is the friendly government Sparta established in Athens upon defeating it after 27 years of war in 404 BCE. For the upper caste of an Athenian elite already contemptuous of democracy, the city’s defeat in the Peloponnesian War confirmed that Sparta’s system was preferable. It was a high-spirited military aristocracy ruling over a permanent servant class, the helots, who were periodically slaughtered to condition them to accept their subhuman status. Athenian democracy by contrast gave too much power to the low-born. The pro-Sparta oligarchy used their patrons’ victory to undo the rights of citizens, and settle scores with their domestic rivals, exiling and executing them and confiscating their wealth.
...Loathing Trump provided their political excuse, but the American security and defense establishment had their own interest in turning a blind eye to China. Twenty years of squandering men, money, and prestige on military engagements that began in George W. Bush’s “War on Terror” have proved to be of little strategic value to the United States. However, deploying Americans to provide security in Middle East killing fields has vastly benefited Beijing. Last month Chinese energy giant Zen Hua took advantage of a weak Iraqi economy when it paid $2 billion for a five-year oil supply of 130,000 barrels a day. Should prices go up, the deal permits China to resell the oil.
In Afghanistan, the large copper, metal, and minerals mines whose security American troops still ostensibly ensure are owned by Chinese companies. And because Afghanistan borders Xinjiang, Xi Jinping is worried that “after the United States pulls troops out of Afghanistan, terrorist organizations positioned on the frontiers of Afghanistan and Pakistan may quickly infiltrate into Central Asia.” In other words, American troops are deployed abroad in places like Afghanistan less to protect American interests than to provide security for China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
Lee Smith: The American Elite's Primary Allegiance Is No Longer to America, But to the Communist Party of China, That Makes Them Rich and Keeps Them In Power
http://ace.mu.nu/archives/392605.php
He starts the article by quoting from a Tom "Chinese Dictatorship Should Be Our Model" Friedman column from ten years ago, noting that the corporate elite had previously used the Republican Party as its vehicle for gaining favorable policies. But the Tea Party made the GOP a less welcome place for the aborning oligarchy.
The GOP was still rolling over for the US Chamber of Commerce and Wall Street and the corporate elite -- but it wasn't rolling over hard enough.
But the elite easily found a new home in the transnational left.
‘Absolutely No Mercy’: Leaked Files Expose How China Organized Mass Detentions of Muslims
More than 400 pages of internal Chinese documents provide an unprecedented inside look at the crackdown on ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang region.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/11/16/world/asia/china-xinjiang-documents.html
Violence by Uighur militants has never threatened Communist control of the region. Though attacks grew deadlier after 2009, when nearly 200 people died in ethnic riots in Urumqi, they remained relatively small, scattered and unsophisticated.
Even so, Mr. Xi warned that the violence was spilling from Xinjiang into other parts of China and could taint the party’s image of strength. Unless the threat was extinguished, Mr. Xi told the leadership conference, “social stability will suffer shocks, the general unity of people of every ethnicity will be damaged, and the broad outlook for reform, development and stability will be affected.”
Setting aside diplomatic niceties, he traced the origins of Islamic extremism in Xinjiang to the Middle East, and warned that turmoil in Syria and Afghanistan would magnify the risks for China. Uighurs had traveled to both countries, he said, and could return to China as seasoned fighters seeking an independent homeland, which they called East Turkestan.
“After the United States pulls troops out of Afghanistan, terrorist organizations positioned on the frontiers of Afghanistan and Pakistan may quickly infiltrate into Central Asia,” Mr. Xi said. “East Turkestan’s terrorists who have received real-war training in Syria and Afghanistan could at any time launch terrorist attacks in Xinjiang.”
China appeased mark cuban officially banned the anthem at Mavericks games.
A lack of the anthem at sporting events is nothing to get riled up about in my opinion. Something about casting pearls before the entitled lefty swine that use it as an opportunity to be seen 'doing something'.
You can also look at not allowing the anthem to be mocked as: No flag. Refresh.
If I was an owner of a pro sports franchise, I would have stopped playing the anthem the day after Kaepernick pulled his stunt and be done with it.
Did they replace it with the Chinese anthem, "March of the Volunteers", yet (though this would be more appropriate for the University of Tennessee)?
The NYT must be suffering an existential crisis - the Chinese are torturing Muslims, what are we going to say about it? I know! Let's blame it on the United States!
Easy. Trump's fault. Save it for Impeachment III.
And because Afghanistan borders Xinjiang, Xi Jinping is worried that “after the United States pulls troops out of Afghanistan, terrorist organizations positioned on the frontiers of Afghanistan and Pakistan may quickly infiltrate into Central Asia.”
Sounds like a good reason to pull them out.
Then the Chinese have an excuse to take a turn at invading.

Closing down much of the economy and keeping children at home for most of a year as a response to a pandemic might have something to do with that as well as having something todo with similar figures for men.
There's also the basic fact that many families have men with the better paying job. If dad is an engineer and mom is a schoolteacher, and someone has to quit to stay home with the kids, there's little choice in the matter. Our cultural norms tend to have this arrangement.
Who cares about moms? That’s what dads are for. Who will think of the strippers and waitresses?

Biden Administration Quietly Drops Trump Proposal To Track Chinese Influence In US Schools
https://dailycaller.com/2021/02/09/biden-confucius-institute-trump-china/
The Trump administration submitted a proposed rule to the Department of Homeland Security on Dec. 31, 2020, entitled “Establishing Requirement for Student and Exchange Visitor Program Certified Schools to Disclose Agreements with Confucius Institutes and Classrooms.”
Around 500 K-12 schools and 65 colleges in the U.S. have partnerships with the Confucius Institute U.S. Center, a U.S.-based affiliate of the Beijing-based Confucius Institute Headquarters. The institute, also known as Hanban, is affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education.
Many of Hanban’s directors are members of the Chinese Communist Party or have close ties to the organization, The Daily Caller has previously reported.
The Trump-era proposal was withdrawn from consideration on Jan. 26, according to information at RegInfo.gov, the website for the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), which operates under the Office of Management and Budget and the White House.
Power, Patriotism and 1.4 Billion People:
How China Beat the Virus and Roared Back
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/05/world/asia/china-covid-economy.html
In the year since the coronavirus began its march around the world, China has done what many other countries would not or could not do. With equal measures of coercion and persuasion, it has mobilized its vast Communist Party apparatus to reach deep into the private sector and the broader population, in what the country’s leader, Xi Jinping, has called a “people’s war” against the pandemic — and won.
China is now reaping long-lasting benefits that few expected when the virus first emerged in the central Chinese city of Wuhan and the leadership seemed as rattled as at any moment since the Tiananmen Square crackdown in 1989.
The success has positioned China well, economically and diplomatically, to push back against the United States and others worried about its seemingly inexorable rise. It has also emboldened Mr. Xi, who has offered China’s experience as a model for others to follow.
NYT straight up publishing Chinese propaganda.
China has what the left wants.
And liberaltarians.
Oh, and speaking of Chinese propaganda, you all will be delighted to know that WHO recently visited Wuhan, and the BSL-IV laboratory therein, and has announced that SARS-CoV2 is definitely not of laboratory origin. https://fortune.com/2021/02/10/who-wuhan-lab-china-covid-origin/
And what else would you expect WHO to do but carry water for the CPC.
The WHO has gotten massive amounts of funding from China in recent years, so it's not surprising.
of course WHO visited after chinas spent a year cleaning up it facilities to hide any evidence of failure or wrong doing but hey the place looked clean.
And it definitely did not come from Lab 7, on the Bat Virus floor, the day the cleaning lady found some bat wings in the trash and took them home for soup.
The article was probably sponsored by the CCP.
Every generation gets their own Walter Duranty.
I nominate Tom Friedman at the NYT:
“I was thinking, like, ‘What are they doing in China today?’ Do you know, Chris, that it takes four hours and 18 minutes to take the bullet train from Beijing to Shanghai, and it takes 21 hours to take the train from New York to Chicago, and they’re both about the same distance?”
Of course it takes about 2.5 hours by air, but Freidman misses that.
Communist China is a natural model for progressives; they get to do what they want [and manage you accordingly] without any push back.
And the time to push back here is well on its way.
The time to push back was 4 years ago when they refused to accept that their mascot, the Giant Cunt, got rejected by a majority of the states and they put on their Hillary Clinton hats and marched on Washington.
Do you think they pay him more than $.50 for his asinine observations? If so, they are getting ripped off.
Exactly who I was thinking of, Abattoir.
I had the pleasure of listening to him at a ~2003 or -04 live talk, wax rhapsodic about the freedom that invading Iraq was going to bring to the MidEast.
The man loves himself some Top Men.
I just don't get the fascination with equating trains with progress. We have 5000+ miles of civilian runway. China has around 500 (presumably mil/civ). That's why they use trains.
Population density too. Most everyone in China lives either on the coast, or in a river valley, right next to the river. Fairly high population density in either case. This may be changing, as some of the hilariously impassable terrain in central China gets built upon. Not an accident China keeps breaking records with longest and highest road bridges, given the mountains they have to deal with.
Anyway, you can service dense populations with trains. Not very well, but fuck it, who cares if the peasants complain?
I just don’t get the fascination with equating trains with progress
Trains. A slower, less efficient mode of transportation that:
a) cannot alter its predetermined course
b) can be held up by one person standing on the tracks
c) is represented as serving the masses when it really only serves the elite
d) has historically been wielded by oligarchs to plunder industry and agriculture
That pretty much fucking nails the progress of socialism.
I forgot one. d.5) the places where it does serve the masses it stinks to high heaven and all the women get groped
e) everyone that depends on it for travel can have their freedom of movement completely controlled
To be fair, one person can't hold up a train by standing on the tracks unless the train is just about stopped *and* the driver has morals.
Yeah, but that is a feature, not a bug. It has a built in excuse to kill anyone who doesn't get out of the way. Again, exactly the way socialism progresses.
Trains
Nothing says progress like 1800s technology.
Do you know where else the trains ran on time?
Trains run on rails. Everyone knows that.
I really doubt China claims it won. If it did that, this "war" would have to be over, but they want it to continue as long as they can get away with it.

https://time.com/5936036/secret-2020-election-campaign/
The summer uprising had shown that people power could have a massive impact. Activists began preparing to reprise the demonstrations if Trump tried to steal the election. “Americans plan widespread protests if Trump interferes with election,” Reuters reported in October, one of many such stories. More than 150 liberal groups, from the Women’s March to the Sierra Club to Color of Change, from Democrats.com to the Democratic Socialists of America, joined the “Protect the Results” coalition. The group’s now defunct website had a map listing 400 planned postelection demonstrations, to be activated via text message as soon as Nov. 4. To stop the coup they feared, the left was ready to flood the streets.
Related to this, Greta Thunberg (or, the person running her social media account) accidentally posted a color revolution-type document detailing how the "farm protests" in India were being organized.
"Insert influential celebrity/media personality"
More than 150 liberal groups, from the Women’s March to the Sierra Club to Color of Change, from Democrats.com to the Democratic Socialists of America, joined the “Protect the Results” coalition. The group’s now defunct website had a map listing 400 planned postelection demonstrations, to be activated via text message as soon as Nov. 4. To stop the coup they feared, the left was ready to flood the streets.
This was the bit that really struck me, too. We've been told for years and years that it's a crazy conspiracy theory to suggest that these groups coordinate their protests with the DNC.
While I don't see that this article exposes anything illegal, it sure does openly brag about things that up until just the other day were dismissed as wild paranoia.
It's blatant gaslighting on the level of Animal Farm. Prior to that article coming out, the narrative was that anyone suggesting that this was all being coordinated between the DNC, Big Tech, elite oligarchs, and the media was nothing more than a conspiracy theory.
Three months later, Time Magazine comes out with an in-depth article admitting that just such a "cabal" (again, their word, not mine) did just that. But they weren't "rigging" the election, no Xir! They were fortifying it!
These people have literally transformed into the pigs, and Time Magazine is acting the Squealer role.
It's like a grand echo of that day that 600 papers nationwide all published editorials on the same day saying "How dare Trump suggest we coordinate our editorials!"
And it's not like they didn't telegraph it with a high-power floodbeam. Hillary flat-out said that Biden should never concede regardless of the results, and WaPo reported on Biden's election team doing that very thing.
I think all those Trump car and boat parades scared the shit out of them, and led them to believe that there was a chance that all their behind-the-scenes efforts to rig the election might end up coming for naught, so they needed to prep their color revolution to kick off if that was the case.
It begins - protect the hedge funds to protect the rest of us.
Robinhood sued by family of 20-year-old trader who killed himself after believing he racked up huge losses
https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/08/robinhood-sued-by-family-of-alex-kearns-20-year-old-trader-who-killed-himself-.html
Yeah - suddenly there's lots of chin-stroking about the dangers of letting the little people trade easily.
"Are there really any good guys and bad guys here?"
"Short sellers do . . . sometimes behave badly by promoting negative rumors about companies after they’ve established their short positions. I have not read that this was a major problem with GameStop. I would say that people who intentionally manipulate stock prices qualify as bad guys."
My other favorite bit:
"Robinhood’s mission statement is to democratize investing for all. Jack Bogle (founder of Vanguard Group) did that years ago. You can buy a Vanguard index fund, pay $4 a year for every $10,000 you have invested and have a well diversified, long-term investment in the market and the U.S. economy. That’s democratization. What Robinhood has done is make it easy to trade."
See - "Democratization" is not giving the little people power over their own decisions. Democratization is allowing the little people to hand their assets over to expert oligarchs for management.
It's too bad those people were forced to hand that money over and were not given the option of doing something else with that money.
You mean like signing up for a Robinhood account? Maybe his point went over your head.
But I though "democracy" meant the government gives me free stuff?
1 Big thing: How to deprogram America's extremists
https://www.axios.com/newsletters/axios-login-4ce5559b-b886-40c9-b4d9-e43ef3317c3b.html
The U.S. needs a "Marshall Plan against domestic extremism," Daniel Koehler, director of the German Institute on Radicalization and De-radicalization Studies, told Axios.
"The spread of extremist conspiracy theories in the United States is the second most dangerous pandemic the country faces right now," he said. "The damage that's been to the U.S. in terms of community and social cohesion will be immense and will be lasting."
The radicalization is happening in a multitude of online spaces and right-wing media channels, pulling people into an alternate reality that posits, among a growing swarm of other false ideas, that the 2020 election was stolen.
When it comes to coordinated deradicalization efforts, the U.S. is behind most European countries by 25 to 30 years, Koehler said.
The latest: Twitter and Facebook continue to step up action aimed at driving extremism and far-right misinformation off their platforms. But the efforts will have to go well beyond the tech platforms.
A key part of breaking extremists' rising mainstream influence will be making it unacceptable for white nationalists, anti-government extremists and conspiracy theorists to serve in the military, in police forces or as lawmakers.
Experts worry that the GOP's tacit and sometimes explicit approval of extremists will hamper efforts to keep police forces and legislatures free of conspiracy theorists.
"At DOD, it will go well and they will quash it," said former FBI counterterrorism analyst Clint Watts. "It's a lot of sheriffs' departments that make me nervous, because they're elected. Politics means you go with party."
Yes, but: A purely punitive, security-minded approach alone is likely to prove ineffective and invasive at best, experts say. At worst, it will only fuel extremists' sense of persecution and push them closer to violence.
Instead, experts agree serious resources need to be mustered toward providing an offramp for people who have been drawn into extremist ideologies.
New federal programs would likely be doomed to fail, experts say, because distrust and hatred of the government is already a core tenet of far-right extremism.
Instead, private and public-private programs are more likely to be effective, particularly if they're able to get endorsement and funding from federal and state governments.
Those could include anti-extremism counseling programs and support groups; education programs that work with schools to identify risks and signs of incipient radicalization; and rehabilitation organizations that work with the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated.
https://amgreatness.com/2021/02/09/the-coming-military-purge/
One of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s first actions after confirmation has been to order a “60 day stand down” to combat extremism. This follows the widespread and mostly baseless establishment fantasy that “right-wing extremists” and “white supremacists” are running rampant and pose some immediate threat to the country.
...Rural, white, conservative, and Christian American men make up the bulk of America’s warrior class. They predominate in dangerous combat units, and intergenerational traditions of service are common. In spite of these traditions, the message from the culture, as well as political leaders, to such people is plain: Your day is done. You will be second-class citizens. And you are suspect.
What will happen to the American military if this warrior class chooses not to serve a political regime that labels them obstacles to the goals of equity and inclusion? What will motivate them if such service becomes morally ambiguous and less supported within their own communities?
In Iraq, the mass purge of former Ba’athists from the government and military proved to be a massive mistake and an accelerant to the insurgency. It turns out that when you take away the pay, prestige, and pensions of trained military men, they might turn their skills on the new regime. After all, at that point, what’s left to lose?
I can hear it now; "We're the only modern/industrialized/ first world country without systematic prevention of extremism!"
There is no deep state, and if you keep talking about the deep state, then the deep state will have to re-educate you.
I love how they say the system is racist, and they need to "purge" the racists from the government, but never really explain how Democrats ALREADY RUN THOSE PLACES.
The radicalization is happening in a multitude of online spaces and right-wing media channels, pulling people into an alternate reality that posits, among a growing swarm of other false ideas, that the 2020 election was stolen.
It's not a false idea when one of the elites' propaganda organs blatantly admits it just a couple of weeks after their chosen leader was installed.
Chicago public schools will reopen.
They're putting their children in danger. How many of them will be shot at by gangs or body slammed by CPD on the way to school?
House impeachment managers violated their own House rules yesterday with the video that put temporally separate events together (Capitol riots started before the speech ended) and left out pieces of the speech such as cutting off right before the call for peaceful protesting.

The new security measures include campus cops roaming dormitory halls looking for students leaving their rooms for unapproved reasons. The only permissible reasons to leave your dorm room at Berkeley are for meals, bathroom breaks, or getting a COVID-19 test.
The training and conditioning for tomorrow's useful idiot soldiers starts at elite colleges.
It's Berkeley. That crew is already all in.
Nah, it started at birth.
But unlike with sensible parents and educators, these coddled students were (and are) continued to be treated like toddlers.

American women's labor force participation is at a 33-year low, according to new unemployment data analyzed by the National Women's Law Center. "This brings the total number of women who have left the labor force since February 2020 to more than 2.3 million," and puts women's labor force participation rate "at 57%, the lowest it's been since 1988," reports CNBC.
Democrats won't stop until every woman is forced to work. Shaming stay at home mothers isn't enough, new laws will be passed.
But stay-at-home mothers are perfect for operating the backyard iron smelters!
That's the great leap forward, comrade.

https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/douglass-mackey-ricky-vaughn-memes-first-amendment
In 2016, a Florida man named Douglass Mackey (using the online alias “Ricky Vaughn”) allegedly conspired to distribute a meme aimed at deceiving pro-Hillary voters.
Four years later, Mackey is now being prosecuted (as to this and as to other memes) for violating 18 U.S.C. § 241, a federal law that punishes conspiracies “to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person ... in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him by the Constitution”—namely, the right to vote. Lying to voters in a way that keeps them from voting, the theory goes, is a crime.
Is this sort of prosecution constitutional? After all, people often lie in political campaigns. Candidates do it, activists do it, political operatives do it. Can election lies simply be outlawed?
This is terrifying.
Regulating tech companies like common carriers is a terrible idea:
Nobody is proposing this. They are asking for only those who act as hosts to do so. Much like a phone company. It isnt all tech companies. Just a stupid misrepresentation.
A hosting service is akin to your electric company, it is part of an infrastructure.
Nobody wants the government to tell the NY Times which letters to the editor to print, but they are legally liable for the ones they choose to print. Twitter and the like are asserting enough control over what goes out that they are acting as publishers, giving the OK to what goes out. If someone commits libel or slander, Twitter has accepted that post and is liable.
Baloney. I see plenty of right-wing opinion on Twitter to this day.
This doesn’t address his post at all dumbfuck.
I much prefer section 230 to stay how it is. Twitter should have the right to moderate without being liable for everything.
I feel like this very comments section shows what happens when you don't make an attempt at moderation. You want every site to look like this?
You want every site to look like this?
Yes - what exactly is wrong with this site?
& section 230 need not be modified to disallow Twitter, FB, Google, and others from using its protection.
You may not be proposing this, but you do not speak for everybody. There are those who ARE proposing this.
And yet you didn't cite any. Odd
Just a stupid misrepresentation.
It's stupid misrepresentations all the way down.
Women choosing to drop out of the labor force is great news!
American women's labor force participation is at a 33-year low, according to new unemployment data analyzed by the National Women's Law Center.

Antifa uses Twitter to threaten & harass the media. If you criticize them or film their violence & vandalism, they distribute your picture & location with a warning to fellow comrades to look for you. They don't hide their tactics.
I also left out doing it on behalf of an ideology/economic system that unifies corporate and government power against the people, to keep them in line, reward their friends, and give the State deniability if something goes wrong ("we didn't screw up; it was the private owners").
Let's not forget the hyper-decadent society later lionized in Broadway musicals.
Cabaretdid have decent music, you have to admit. Better than Hamilton, anyway.
If there is a cultural CounterReformation to go with our shiny new caudillo, post conflict that deposes Joe and Blow, it'll be nasty. As I've said, I wouldn't be surprised if it went full retard, all the way to A Handmaid's Tale. There'd certainly be some thought given to drastically restricting any remaining franchise.
Any respect for Constitutional rights and processes is going to die off after the next domestic conflict. In the short term, if the left wins, we get a "diverse" neo-Maoist nightmare; if the right wins, we get Franco.
If we're lucky, at the back end we get some sort of Potemkin "republic" led by a princeps who actually runs everything, but lets Congress pretend it actually matters so the elites have a place to peacock, followed by several decades of a pax Americana of sorts before the princeps' decadent offspring shit it up and the military becomes the de facto power behind the throne. If we're unlucky, we get a couple hundred years of feudal conflict by disparate societies functioning as some grotesque, scaled-down version of what came before it.

William J. Burns, the nominee for CIA director, is the president of a prominent think tank that has received as much as $2 million in recent years from a Chinese businessman and a think tank with links to the Chinese Communist Party.
As part of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace’s work with China, Burns invited a group of congressional staffers on a junket to China in 2019 where they met with a professor who works for the Chinese Communist Party’s central committee. They also met with the president of a prominent Chinese front group.
Zhang Yichen, a Carnegie board member and prominent donor, is a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, which advises the Chinese Communist Party on policy issues.
Wokeism is Calvinism. We are all sinners deserving of Hell, we cannot do anything about it, and Power will arbitrarily decide who gets saved and who doesn't, and Power is free to make that choice w/o any feedback from us sinners.
Discuss.
Wokianity is very much Christianity stripped of a Christ. The exortations are there, but there's no personal responsibility, no redemption, no mercy, no forgiveness of sins.
"1 But understand this: In the last days terrible times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, without love of good, 4 traitorous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power." - 2 Timothy 3:1-6
I would spin it slightly more toward the notion of the Elect. Like Calvinism, Wokeism divides the world into the Enlightened and the Sinful, the pragmatic effect being that any symptom of sinfulness makes one a member of the Sinful, forever unworthy of the company of the Elect.
This is why something you posted online fifteen years ago can make you forever irredeemable, no matter how much you may say you now know you were wrong and you are oh so terribly sorry. Because what you posted fifteen years ago revealed that you are one of the Sinful.
Your theory or one you've read elsewhere? Would love to read the source if the latter.
Not a bad theory either way. Especially with 'the elect act as the elect' response to 'how do I know if I am saved?' Pure Calvinism is a terrifying belief system, which is why almost every denomination derived from it has found some way to soften it.
Biden is cancelling the sale of TikTok to a partnership between Walmart and Oracle.
https://www.wsj.com/articles/tiktok-sale-to-oracle-walmart-is-shelved-as-biden-reviews-security-11612958401?
I have obvious libertarian and capitalist reservations about the way the TikTok sale was forced, but anyone who imagines the Biden administration is canceling this deal out of deference to the principles of libertarian capitalism is stupid. There are three more likely explanations.
1) Larry Ellison was a Trump supporter, and the Biden administration is punishing him for that.
2) TikTok in the hands of Walmart would have presented serious competition to both Google's YouTube and Amazon's advertising and retail operations--and the Biden administration is deferring to the wishes of YouTube and Amazon.
3) The Biden administration is seeking to normalize relations with Beijing. They may not be looking to take the tariffs down, but that doesn't mean they want a hostile relationship with Emperor Xi either.
Conclusions?
Just because I opposed the Iraq War, for all sorts of reasons, doesn't mean I didn't want the U.S. to win. And just because TikTok was forced to sell its U.S. operations to Walmart doesn't mean YouTube and Amazon couldn't use more competition.
I'm having a hard time trying to imagine a situation where Walmart can get access to the kind of consumer data that Amazon leverages so that Walmart can compete with them online. And it's impossible for me to imagine the Biden administration addressing a lack of competition for Amazon and Google with anything better than seeing TikTok sold to Oracle/Walmart.
"It’s impossible for me to imagine the Biden administration addressing a lack of competition for Amazon and Google with anything better than seeing TikTok sold to Oracle/Walmart."
I'll elaborate.
Trump forcing social media to tolerate the speech of conservatives wouldn't have been an excellent example of a libertarian defense of free speech because forcing private companies to tolerate speech against their will isn't libertarian.
That being said, forcing social media to tolerate the speech of conservatives may have been far more libertarian than using the government to force social media to censor the speech of conservatives--if only because more speech is preferable to forced silence.
We may like to think there are other options, than Biden or Trump, but, in reality, there were only two possible outcomes.
In the same way, the government forcing TikTok to sell their U.S. operations to Walmart was not an excellent example of laissez-faire capitalism. But breaking up Google into its mobile unit, advertising, search, and YouTube components along with breaking up Amazon into its constituent components is far worse from a libertarian capitalist perspective.
There are other possibilities beside Democrat led breakups that are worse than forcing TikTok to marry Walmart, too. For instance, Google and Amazon becoming wholly owned constituents of the Democratic party isn't an ideal situation from a libertarian perspective.
Seeing social media become wholly owned possessions of the Democratic party isn't what we libertarian capitalists are looking for when we say we don't want the government interfering with speech and freedom of the press either.

Stupidity is extremely useful to statist politicians, not just because stupid people are easily manipulated, but more importantly because they believe the world can be remade to fit their incorrect beliefs if enough force is deployed. This is the basis of most left-wing populism.
...The refusal to admit error is also a key characteristic of statist politics. The State is never wrong. Its programs never end. It acts with absolute confidence that it can do everything from managing trillion dollar economies to rewriting human nature and controlling the weather.
...Instead, weaponizing stupidity allows the statists to create laws that impose the GREATEST possible expense and burden upon the largest number of people, forcing us to accept that obviously foolish notions are "true" and behave accordingly.
...Our diminished notion of free speech is a great example of weaponized stupidity, and that attitude is seeping into every aspect of our lives. The powerful will tell you what is True, and you are not permitted to disagree with their "consensus." You will be made stupid.
You don't have to be stupid to be manipulated i know many smart people who have been manipulated. it apparently is easy to manipulate people when you have the type of charachter who likes to manipulate people for evil intent

Turns out that the answer to "how would you have behaved if you were living in Nazi Germany in 1930s", for most people, is "I would have done exactly what I was told, turned a blind eye to injustices everywhere, put blind trust in an oppressive state, and surrendered my freedoms"
The sickest, saddest irony is that the people who are currently behaving the most like Nazis are people trying to show that they would have stood up to the Nazis in the '30s by persecuting proxy Nazis now.
I never lived in a dorm. I always rented a room in an apartment. I don't understand why people would subject themselves to a dorm lifestyle, especially in Berkeley were dorms are known to be indoctrination centers.
Then again, renting in Berkeley is a bitch because owners know not to rent to students. I have a friend who lives in Berkeley who refuses to ever again rent to students. He sold one house rather than rent it out again. He kept his other house for his granddaughter. And the spare rooms in his main house are empty. Student renters are not loved in Berkeley. So maybe the dorms are their own option when BART is still not running.
some schools require freshman students to stay at dorms for the first year so they can acclimated to life away from home. I'm okay with this and wish I had stayed at the dorms the first year, it may have been better for me anyway or I would have quit sooner. but thats 2020 hindsight with no regrets.

Your wild claim was that Reason did not have ten mentions of Uighurs. You yourself list nine. So it’s one short. Nitpick much?
There wasn’t even eight mentions let alone ten, you dishonest fuck.
Only three mention the Uighur Auschwitz and only one was a Reason article (paragraph) on it.
You didn’t even actually read my post before your sulky little reply, did you?
In my case, we were required to stay at the dorms for freshman year.
Also the dorms were mixed, there were male floors and female floors. This meant there were dozens of women right down the stairs, a feature I'm guessing your rental did not have.
I never lived in a dorm. I always rented a room in an apartment.
Same here, and in Oakland no less because you couldn't get an apartment in Berkeley to save your life, even in the early '90s. Vastly preferred it. Never saw even the slightest attraction of dorm life.
I have a friend who lives in Berkeley who refuses to ever again rent to students. He sold one house rather than rent it out again.
I would imagine there was the additional factor that Berkeley is a notoriously horrific place to try to operate a rental unit. We're looking at trying to get some sort of income property, but the closest we're even considering is Sonoma.

That's not quite what's described. Someone attempted to film/ interview the cop on a livestream while he was inside the police station. The cop is not a spokesman for the PD.
So... meh.
It has been established that citizens are protected from reprisals for telling cops to fuck off. Great! Cops need to honor their oath to uphold the 1A and be fired when they fail. But livestreaming mundane interactions in order to play 'Gotcha!' is not honest discourse. Don't get all butthurt when they return the favor.
