New COVID-19 Strain and Bungled Vaccine Rollout Threaten the 'Return to Normal' in 2021
Plus: Josh Hawley rejects reality (again), Florida's still trying to bust Robert Kraft for getting a hand job, distilleries' good deeds get punished, and more...

2020 is finally drawing to a close, thank goodness. Will 2021 be markedly better? A few weeks ago, that seemed like a pretty safe bet. In the midst of what seemed to be eternally rising COVID-19 case counts, we got news of not one but several successful vaccines. And then—poof!—they were being loaded in trucks and shipped around the United States.
In our virtual Reason office, we talked about the things we would do come summer 2021, when not just small gatherings but big public events become OK again. Someone bought tickets to a big arena concert. Someone is planning a trip overseas. It all seemed possible.
What a difference a week makes. The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is way slower and more disorganized than expected, sowing doubts that we'll reach mass vaccination status in anything like a timely manner.
"If you listen to the time frame they're talking about, it starts at about six months. We'd be at critical mass in June, and then [the estimate] went to about September, and now some people are talking about the end of the year," said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo at a Wednesday press conference.
Governors are being WAY too precious about who gets this vaccine and we're going to end up with millions of doses of expired vaccines if states don't get serious about getting this out the door. These numbers are dangerously bad https://t.co/9VBv9nSEkr pic.twitter.com/RciNui1kSn

Meanwhile, health authorities have started discovering cases of Americans infected with the new COVID-19 strain (in Colorado and California). While the new variant doesn't appear to be more deadly, or even to make people sicker than the original strain, it does spread much more easily.
BREAKING: Newsom says about an hour ago, they were informed that the new UK covid-19 strain has been confirmed in Southern California
— Lara Korte (@lara_korte) December 30, 2020
How big of a problem the new variant will be here remains to be seen. Perhaps it's limited to a few locales for now, but that seems unlikely, or at least unlikely to keep. But one thing is clear, based on the United Kingdom's response to the variant and U.S. leaders' handling of the pandemic so far: The variant will serve as a handy justification for politicians to reimpose lockdown orders or refuse to lift existing ones.
The good news is that existing vaccines are thought to work on the new variant. The bad news is that we're not sure they will work as well. Here's what bioinformatics specialist Trevor Bedford had to say to The Seattle Times:
Q: You've said the new variant might be slightly less susceptible to vaccine-induced immunity, but that it isn't different enough to completely foil existing vaccines. Why?
A: The main reason I think that is because there's a particular mutation in the U.K. variant that removes two different (portions) of the spike protein, and that tucks in a bit of protein that was sticking out and was an antibody target. So it removes that target for antibodies.
And there was a study from a lab in Cambridge … where they took serum from people who had recovered from COVID and measured it against wild type virus and against viruses that have this deletion. And they saw that the antibodies of the recovered individuals neutralize the mutated virus significantly less than the wild type virus.
If I had to hazard a guess, I believe we could see a modest reduction, like from 95% vaccine effectiveness to 85% or so, but I don't think it would really severely inhibit the vaccine.
ELECTION 2020
"It's nuts." Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is going full Trump on the 2020 election results. Some of his GOP colleagues aren't pleased.
"Politically for them it might be great for their base, for their fundraising, for things like that but, nationally, it's horrific," Rep. Denver Riggleman (R–Va.) told MSNBC. "I find it amazing that right now we have Republicans that are actually objecting to Federalism and wanting sort of this overthrow or this sort of 'let's throw out the electoral voters, let's ignore the states, we've already litigated this and let's move forward.' And the only thing I can say is it's nuts."

Prosecutors aren't letting go of the Robert Kraft prostitution case. Florida prosecutors, still intent on punishing New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft for getting a hand job, are refusing to delete massage parlor surveillance footage that multiple judges ruled off-limits for use in a criminal trial. Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg—who repeatedly lied about the purpose and findings of a prostitution bust at Orchids of Asia spa, calling it a rescue mission to save Asian female sex slaves who worked there when the only people punished in the case were those same workers—"argues there is still a civil case pending in which the videos could be used as evidence," reports ABC News.

In the early days of the pandemic, many U.S. distilleries stepped up to fill in the hand sanitizer shortage by using their equipment to produce sanitizer instead of liquor. Now, the U.S. government is punishing them for it. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) "delivered notice to distilleries that had produced hand sanitizer in the early days of the pandemic that they now owe an unexpected fee to the government of more than $14,000," notes Jacob Grier. More here.
QUICK HITS
- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is back to rebuffing efforts to raise COVID-19 relief checks from $600 to $2,000. "The GOP leader made clear he is unwilling to budge, despite political pressure from Trump and even some fellow Republican senators demanding action," reports the Associated Press.
- Around 60 percent of Ohio nursing home staffers offered the COVID-19 vaccine have said no thanks, according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.
- "Over the weekend, a Wisconsin hospital announced that it had been forced to toss more than 500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine because an employee accidentally left dozens of vials unrefrigerated overnight," notes The Washington Post. "But on Wednesday, the hospital said the incident was no accident."
- Violence and misconduct are pervasive among police in Columbus, Ohio.

I guess we'll have to live with these kinds of posts for a while where any criticism of Dear Leader is met with vacuous rage.
dear leader
I, for one, can hardly wait for her inauguration. The devil is defeated and it will be just like when the lightbringer ruled us, except with even more social justice.
And I promise I will join you in meeting any criticism of her with vacuous rage.
#LibertariansForPowerfulLeaders
#LibertariansScaredOfLiberty
Which is the exactly appropriate hashtag for all the "libertarians" religiously carrying water for a man who declared he had "total authority. TOTAL."
Weren't you the same silly bitch who screeched that people here should start a revolution because a few Antifarts got party-vanned this summer?
Definitely not. I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the folks who cover themselves in walmart kit and proclaim to be patriots ready to die for the constitution over a mask policy, but had nothing to say about unnamed federal agents snatching people without charging them.
I was pointing out the hypocrisy of the folks who cover themselves in walmart kit and proclaim to be patriots ready to die for the constitution over a mask policy, but had nothing to say about unnamed federal agents snatching people without charging them.
You clearly didn't think it was a big deal, either, since you were screeching about fascism yet did nothing.

And you know a lot about shit, right! Tell us more you infected piece of TDS shit!

Was there criticism?
My statement was simply greeting the organization.
Or the ignorant ones like yours that think the federal government should micromanage every health care provider.
I didn't even notice the "bungled rollout" but just the "new strain" threatening return to normal bullshit
Did she mention Trump? It looks like the problem with getting people vaccinated is at the state level.
Yes, fuck you Reason for the constant gaslighting, the Walter Duranty level selective reporting, the brown envelope journalism, and the abandonment of your libertarian mission for establishment orthodoxy.
I like how ENB claims the federal duty extends beyond distribution to hospitals. Reason is becoming very pro government does everything.
The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is way slower and more disorganized than expected, sowing doubts that we'll reach mass vaccination status in anything like a timely manner.
In years to come we will see something like a 2020 picture rows of submerged school buses and wonder what their use would have meant.
Sounds like the cave scene from Planet Of The Apes where they find Joe Biden's dentures.
...they were informed that the new UK covid-19 strain has been confirmed in Southern California
We're calling it the Brexit Virus, please.
The USSA judicial system:

Maybe this is just a Britishism, but I can't think of a more appropriate name for him than Pratt.
I wonder if judges Git and Poofter will also weigh in.
Judge Tosser presiding
The variant will serve as a handy justification for politicians to reimpose lockdown orders or refuse to lift existing ones.
So let's all get out there and scaremonger the hell out of the virus rather than the mitigation.
SleepyJoe can’t wait to impose new mandates.
The last I saw the medical expert are not asking for new but rather emphasizing the current recommendations. Wear a mask, wash your hands, keep your distance.
Well yeah, it’s working really well so far, why wouldn’t we keep doing more of the same?
Who says its not working?
Haven’t you been paying attention to the worst health crisis in history? It’s raging out of control!
Right? A .1% death rate and a median age of death of 80. Of course they need new variant if they are truly going to turn us into CCP West.
0.01% if under 70.
It's just being sabotaged by the Kulaks, hoarders and wreckers, right?
It's working great in countries who do not have a large resident population of anti social morons.
Look, just because you don't actually know where the outbreaks are taking place, doesn't mean your Scientism cult is any less stupid.
"scientism" lol.
You guys are really digging in. Stupid.
Real data outweighs models, stupid.
You mean countries like the UK where this new variant has been raging out of control and yet reports 97% mask compliance?
Also, just FYI, you used the word anti-social morons, however, the word anti-social implies they don't like being around others, ergo they would already be social distancing. If the ones who naturally social distance are the cause of the spread, that logically concludes that social distancing either doesn't impact spread or makes it worse. Since the latter can't be true, and the you appear to be arguing that the former isn't true, your statement that anti-social morons are behind the spread is also fallacious. Thus, I must conclude that it is indeed you who is the moron for implying anti-socials are responsible for the spread. And I am also reminded that it only takes a GT score of 13 on your ASVABs to get in the infantry.
What's the GT score requirement for 18 series, soldier? I'll tell you: 110.
I really don't think you want to take this conversation in the direction you are taking it in, bud.
Oh no, let's do. I may confidant I have nothing to fear from comparing to you based upon my ASVAB scores in every category. I maxed the GT, BTW.
144 baby. Do better than that.
Please let's compare. Pretty, pretty please. I have a 136 IQ. Scored a GT of 144, I graduated honor graduate from 91C school (68WM6 school now) which had a 75% academic failure rate in phase one and 50% in phase two, and spent most of my nights drinking until 0300, and getting up for PT two and a half hours later and almost never cracked my books in phase two. This is after being an honor graduate from 91B school, which had a 30% academic failure rate. And again, almost never studied.
The summer my brother died, I was taking a full summer semester course load, and working part time and we had three young kids. I took two weeks off after his death, and missed three physics two tests. My professor advised me to take an incomplete in the class because he didn't see how I could pass (I had an A before I took the time off) with only a week left in summer semester and three tests behind and the final. I took all three tests and the final on the same day and my lowest score was a 98%.
In all but one class in undergrad, I didn't even need to take the final, I could take a zero, and still pass usually with at least a B. Of course I did and held a 4.0 for most of undergrad. I did blow off O chemistry the semester after my brother died and got a C (didn't turn in any homework and just relied on test scores and skipped class for half the semester) and got a B in equine science because I didn't care, being it was my last semester and not a huge horse fan. I could care less if a white horse is technically a gray horse.
That is a very low requirement. You say plenty that would make one believe that you are only claiming to be a long tabber.
I am half convinced if he did serve he was a POG/REMF like the majority of us were.
Question: does ENB consider that good news?
The good news is that existing vaccines are thought to work on the new variant. The bad news is that we're not sure they will work as well.
Those with conventionally-acquired immunity can figure our situation out for ourselves.
If I had to hazard a guess, I believe we could see a modest reduction, like from 95% vaccine effectiveness to 85% or so, but I don't think it would really severely inhibit the vaccine.
Bottom line is that no matter who you are or what you've been exposed to, it shan't be your body your choice as far as the vaccine is concerned. One way or the other, you will be getting the needle.
If I had to hazard a guess, .....
Now there is some science for ya.
The new science. Where politically backed pseudo scientists guess. How is this different from the mayabs using the stars for predicitons?
Mayans*
The guy plainly said he was making a guess.
The Mayans could count.
The Mayans, like the BC pagans, were using more reliable means: celestial phenomena, and their instincts and intuition.
We are much dumber than our ancestors, we just have more 2-dimensional information
If the new variant has the same spike protein the vaccine will work the same.

MASSIVE PROBLEM in GA [and around the country?] w/ regard to every single adjudicated ballot that would effect any potential recounts, per witness “There was a point in that video where we showed that, Richard Barron, who had said that 113k ballots had been cast and 105k were
2/ adjudicated. Now, that’s not physical possible, which we can prove mathematically, but at the same time, if you adjudicate 105k votes, you have to understand from a technological perspective, as we’ve delved into all the different aspects of how the vote moves along, when you
3/ adjudicate a ballot, that old reference [THE ORIGINAL BALLOT IMAGE] that you saw, or anything like that, is COMPLETELY DESTROYED. It’s gone. You can no longer reference [it]. And when you go run a hand recount, like you did in GA, then you’re looking at the print-out of those
4/ ballots scans. So at no point did the original voter intent enter into that process once it’s destroyed. That’s the one thing I don’t hear people talking about that’s very, very important. The original ballot that you cast, especially from an absentee point is destroyed
5/ and replaced with a new image. With no meta-data. No trail. And even from an audit perspective, you know, it would fail, because they’re all using the same account to audit. So you don’t know who made that change. You don’t know how many times that change was made in the past
6/ and if I had a group of two-people, the Republican and Democrat [which used to be 3 people], that were auditing something … the only thing you would see from the end perspective, data-wise, is that final audit. You would not see any intermediate audit, or any intermediate
7/ ballot image or the original ballot image, so keep that in mind when we’re talking about adjudicated ballots.”
Can this possibly be true? If so, how on earth did we ever let it happen? This is a major problem with regard to ensuring the integrity of our elections
The only elections with integrity are ones that put democrats in power.
To quote the past emperor, "period".
Past emperor?
Current.
Who do you think installed joemala?
It thought it was joementia.
I just googled Georgia election fraud and literally for the first time in months they showed some actual results instead of ten articles that started with: "No, ballots weren't pulled out from under tables after everyone was told to go home...."
Maybe the wave instead starting to come ashore.
There is no other way to interpret what you just wrote other than you are being a sore loser, spewing up sour grapes.
White Knight's gonna white knight.
The security expert in GA yesterday hacked the machines during the live hearings requesting an audit. So much for the most secure machines ever.
He also pointed out how different counties had different types of barcodes which didn't make any sense to him (he is one of the founders of QR technology). He wants to see the actual paper ballots which have still never been audited in GA.
https://pjmedia.com/election/victoria-taft/2020/12/30/tech-expert-shocks-ga-election-fraud-hearing-with-news-he-got-into-voting-system-with-wifi-n1293439
You wouldn’t give two shits about any of these details of Georgia elections if Trump had won.
If they'd used secure paper ballots Trump would have won.
“I want to believe.”
"It is better to be victimized occasionally than to go through life filled with suspicion."
It would be even better to go through life without it being filled with suspicion or being victimized.
Trump has taken the conservative trend toward playing the victim and build a personality cult faction within the Republican party.
"iT's A cULt... ohhh look, the lightbringer. Isn't he dreamy".
It is.
Literally no permanent beliefs that can be committed to paper. The only mission statement the GOP would come up with was "we support Trump."
That is the absolute definition of a cult of personality. Live with it, or leave it, but you cannot deny it.
Really? A fucking mission statement, lol.
And are you actually arguing that if you don't have some sort of ideology to follow, you're a cult?
What a delusional clown you are.
Yes, if your political party does not have a philosophy or principle other than "we heart trump!11!!", then that is a cult of personality.
Lol,
So the Sayings of Chairman Mao, Hitler's Mein Kampf, Gaddafi's Green Book, Kim Il-sung's Juche, Lenin's Manifesto of the Workers’ Deputies, Mussolini's Manifesto della razza, or Enver Hoxha's Eurocommunism is Anti-Communism, etc... I could go on and on... don't exist?
DOL/White Knight your historical ignorance is embarrassing. You can't go around making bullshit claims and not expect to get called on it, when you're that fucking ignorant.
If Trump was a Cult of Personality authoritarian, he would be the first one in history without a manifesto.
You're such a dishonest piece of shit.
When you write about the “lightbringer”, I think you are referring to Barack Obama. Is that right?
I am not a fan of Obama. I’m a libertarian, and was quite critical of Obama during his presidency.
I think lightbringer is more a reference to anyone who believes that the problem is the current politician political party in control whatever and believes if only their person wins, that everything will be fixed.
I voted for Jorgenson, but even if she had miraculously won, ma quite certain that very little would have changed. Even if the LP gained control of the legislature, Presidency and the courts, and at the state level, I am unconvinced that they could change enough to fix everything. Some things would get better undoubtedly, but something would come along, a war, or pandemic or market crash or natural disasters that would hinder their ability to focus their attention on fixing much of what needs fixing.
I’m a libertarian
Lol, the hell you are.
and was quite critical of Obama during his presidency
Lol, the hell you were.
It's obvious what you are, WK. Why the charade?
I thought you claim Trump didn't win, so how is that relevant?
Sidney Powell has gone full nutso:
https://www.newsweek.com/sidney-powell-thinks-georgia-senate-runoff-may-rigged-favor-gop-1557898
“Former Trump campaign attorney Sidney Powell on Tuesday claimed that Georgia election officials may have ‘rigged’ the state's January 5 special runoff elections so that the state's Republican Senate incumbents will win.”
Oh, boy. And Lin Wood, too:
https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumpist-lawyer-lin-wood-casually-suggests-chief-justice-john-roberts-is-a-murderous-pedophile
That this or that part of the voting process could have or might have been does not prove that it did. A rationale citizen, without a partisan interest in overturning the election and undermining trust in democracy, would start working on improving the system for next time.
Shorter White Knight: "So what, now look over there"
Shorter Mother’s Lament: “The side I wanted to win lost, so I’m cheering for their kicking over the board.”
Challenging self-evident fraud in court is apparently "kicking over the board", but don't your dare infer that White Knight is a DNC fifty-center.
Oh, now the fraud isn’t just widespread, it’s “self-evident”.
"That this or that part of the voting process could have or might have been does not prove that it did. "
That's kind of the point. The corollary is that if it did and could not be proven, it still happened.

Oh well, we'll try it this way.

I love all the examples of poverty and economic disaster caused by the CHINA FLU hysteria followed by CHINA JOE's amazing feat:
#18 Joe Biden only won 16.7 percent of all counties in the United States. That was a new record low for a winning candidate, beating the previous record low of 22 percent which Barack Obama established in 2012.
#19 But Joe Biden also somehow won the most overall votes in U.S. history by a very wide margin. He received more than 81 million votes, which was about 12 million more votes than Barack Obama got in 2008 when he set the old record.
I'm no mathematician, but THEY CHEATED.
It was totes because Trump was his own worst enemy... yet gained at least 10,000,000 more votes than 2016 and better demographic distribution than any R in 60 years
But he lost, so...
In the early days of the pandemic, many U.S. distilleries stepped up to fill in the hand sanitizer shortage by using their equipment to produce sanitizer instead of liquor.
Sorry, Rosie the Riveter, the war is over and Johnny Bureaucrat has come marching home.
Step aside, Mark Russell.
Listen we whine constantly about bureaucrats making decisions, but they are not making decisions they are following the rules. Congress should or if not the President should make a wavier. That should not be that hard.
It’s trumps fault.
Don't blame Moderation4ever's Top Men for the supposed mess, it's all Orangehitler's fault.
I suggested this could be easily remedied by a President who was working and not loafing.
He's a question for you, who works harder President Trump or a welfare recipient?
Yep, he puts a lid on the day at 9:30 am.
He golfs over twice as much as Obama, for reference. Remember back when the white house stopped publishing his schedule, as has been done with past presidents? Because everyone was making fun of how much unstructured "executive time" (TV) and how light his schedules were overall.
People know a lot about Trump. He has been in the public eye a long time. He has never gained a reputation for being a hard worker, unlike Musk or Gates or other real billionaires who have very strong reputations for being work obsessed.
First he's Hitler and he fucks everything up, and then he's lazy and should work harder.
Make up your fucking mind on which route you're going to run your demagoguery, you bipolar sociopath.
I never said he was Hitler, I said he was lazy and incompetent.
"I suggested this could be easily remedied by a President who was working and not loafing..."
No suggestion here:
You.
Are.
Full.
Of.
Shit.
"“Governors are being WAY too precious about who gets this vaccine and we’re going to end up with millions of doses of expired vaccines if states don’t get serious about getting this out the door.”
Is Trump supposed to tell the governors he's now emperor?
Never confuse "busy" and "productive".
No they have replaced our legislators and write these rules themselves and therefore deserve all derision thrown at them.
You know who else was only following the rules? The point is, you ridiculous ass, that if bureaucrats put a fraction of the effort into finding ways to make things work for people that they do being insufferable assholes, they wouldn't be odious little vermin scuttling on Leviathan. They would find the laws, rules and regulations allowing this sort of thing rather than issuing fines and fees. But by all means, make excuses for petty tyrants and toadies.
The scumbags at the fda made the decision to go after them. They have discretion. I know the socialist totalitarian love the excuse of I was only following orders, but it didn't work for the Nazi socialists and it shouldn't work for the fda
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is back to rebuffing efforts to raise COVID-19 relief checks from $600 to $2,000.
Could be the full story, could be a disingenuous headline. I don't care enough at this point to find out.
https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/mcconnell-dooms-2000-stimulus-check-after-refusing-split-trumps-three-demands
Good on Mitch, if true. Now rebuff the other 700+ billion dollars of profligate spending.
Too late. Big baby birds get fed before runts.
True.
What difference, at this point, does it make?
(4) $600 deposits in my accounts today for the (4) people (adults) in the family (who paid taxes out of the accounts).
Nothing in my account today or from any of the past free money COVID pinatas. Between my wife's pension and mine, and some IRA conversions, we are over the limit to get free money (and over the limit to avoid elevated taxes).
So, you're welcome.
Yep.
My wife won a lawsuit last year that recovered stolen funds plus attorney fees. So this year’s tax return was an aberration. An anomaly that makes it so that we can’t get any of the Covid-Cash, despite our income not actually being any higher than it ever was (which is well below the threshold for free checks). But because the checks are based on tax returns, it appears to the government that we make nearly 1/2 million dollars a year, instead of well under $100k.
You’re welcome, America. I hope you enjoy my money.
McConnell refused the increase without the redlines to the nonsense spending.
Convenient.
And it only cost us a holocaust of small business and the obliteration of previously unalienable rights
https://www.zerohedge.com/markets/rich-got-richer-during-covid-19-heres-how-american-billionaires-performed
Except for Charles Koch. Without an army of low wage illegals, he can’t make a dime.
Don't laugh, if rich Uncle Charles has a rough year he may not be able to afford Sullum and Boehm's brown envelopes one day.
Then how can we expect to get 90 articles in as many days expounding on the exact same theme?
Fucking Zero Hedge. They do the same fucking dishonest thing that the fucking dishonest media did. They start counting in the middle of March at the market low and ignore the big losses these same people had due to the pandemic in the month prior to market bottom.
Everybody does swell if you ignore their losses. And Zero Hedge is sophisticated enough to know better.
If you lose $5 and then make $100 you're still $95 richer you stupid cunt. Pick any fucking point in time you feel like, because it makes absolutely zero fucking difference to the calculation.
Look at how much the market was down before it turned around. Calling people names doesn’t make your stupid incorrect point any more accurate.
Lick them boots!
Oh, Jesus. In your world declining to believe obviously manipulated data is “licking boots”. Clearly you should have no credibility on the election stuff since you can’t discern between real and fake. The Zero Hedge stuff is pathetically easy to see through.
"Sure American billionaires got wealthier after the lockdowns they supported that utterly crippled the economy and bankrupted tens of millions of Americans, but they lost a tiny fraction of the amount they gained in the time between November and March, so, uh..............."
You really should try thinking all the way to the conclusion of your idiotic lies, you lying stupid cunt.
Also, quivering like a pathetic mewling quim in your home with a mask strapped to your face and insisting that anyone who doesn't join you is a granny killer is another great reason you could be described as a bootlicker. It's not isolated just to you being a lying, stupid cunt pathetically simping for America's radical leftist billionaires.
How's that DEluxe apartment?
You have no credibility - you're offended that someone would point out corporate and tech oligarchs benefit disproportionately from autocratic decrees that force independent businesses into bankruptcy.
"We'Re In ThIs ToGeThEr"
The graphic wasn't about "the market" you mendacious cunt, it was about how a handful of American billionaires were affected before and after the Covid lockdowns that bankrupted tens of millions of Americans and crippled the economy.
And being a lying cunt doesn't excuse the fact that you're also a stupid cunt. Pick any point in time from November of 2019 when Covid was released in Wuhan and today and the billionaires covered by the graphic have more money now than they did then. If you have a quarrel with March, literally pick any month from November 2019 to March 2020 and see how it changes the calculation. Should be pretty easy to prove you're right if you're not a stupid lying cunt.
It is about the market, as those billionaires net worths are completely correlated to the performance of the equities they hold, usually their own companies' (Amazon and Tesla for example). They aren't getting w2 income, they are getting capital gains.
If you lose 50% you need to gain 100% to get back to where you were.
The globalists here are too dumb to understand this is the end state of soft fascism and globalism. Anytime a power is centralized and pulled further from an individual, this happens.
Around 60 percent of Ohio nursing home staffers offered the COVID-19 vaccine have said no thanks...
Literal grandma-killers.
Sounds like a perfect opportunity for a new SleepyJoe mandate.
Wonder how many of those surveyed nursing home workers are minorities. Overall, black nursing home workers make up about 1/3 of the entire workforce.
So they all got reassigned to kill at a different nursing home?
Or did they get fired? Didn't think so.
The only solution is to force them. SleepyJoe will have the guts to do that.
Statist solution: force the vaccine on them.
Market solution: make it a job requirement, and fire those that don't get it.
Which one will Reason support?
Corporate cock tastes so much better than government cock. Thank you based corporation!
Over the weekend, a Wisconsin hospital announced that it had been forced to toss more than 500 doses of the coronavirus vaccine because an employee accidentally left dozens of vials unrefrigerated overnight...
It was no accident. That employee's newfound Bell's palsy kicked in and they didn't get the refrigerator door all the way closed.
My paper said this was a deliberate action and the employee was immediately terminated. Not sure what the story is here. I hate to think that there are people (maybe antivaccers) trying to muck this up.
There is no widespread virus corruption.

This is why you guys are losing elections by 7 millions votes. You don't understand how far from the actual mainstream you are.
Which elections, specifically? The ones in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, or 2020? Or some other elections?
fired heck should also be criminal investigation . if a person doesn't want to be vaxed others do and they should if they like this was criminal no matter what was ruined
What if they knew the vaccination would hurt people?
Not saying this is the case here, but it makes for an interesting thought experiment. Would she be morally obligated to spoil the batch?
You and ENB blamed trump just above. Hilarious.
Update: The pharmacist who did this has been arrested. Still no motive given. Scary though as it appears he planned to return the vaccine to the freezer for usage. That would mean that 500+ people would be vaccinated with useless vaccine leaving them thinking their were protected.
Same newspaper.

"New COVID-19 Strain and Bungled Vaccine Rollout Threaten the 'Return to Normal' in 2021"
But this ignores the fact that we'll have a new President in 2021. Biden has promised to shut down the virus. I guarantee he'll accomplish this with little difficulty.
#VoteDemocratToFightViruses

DAY ONE!
Based on campaign promises, the democratic platform, and speeches since the media anointed him, Biden's first day will be 53 hours long. And that is only if the administration has all the executive orders printed up and ready.
Tough to do when you put a lid on the day mid morning.
https://alt-market.us/covid-mutation-stories-show-that-the-lockdowns-are-designed-to-last-forever/
For many months now I have been warning that the design behind the pandemic lockdowns is a perpetual one; meaning, the lockdowns are MEANT to last forever. We can see this in the very commentary of the establishment elites that are pushing for the mandates; their most frequent argument being that the pandemic restrictions are the “new normal”. This assertion is outlined by globalists like Gideon Lichfield of MIT in his article ‘We’re Not Going Back To Normal’. In it he states:
“Ultimately, however, I predict that we’ll restore the ability to socialize safely by developing more sophisticated ways to identify who is a disease risk and who isn’t, and discriminating - legally - against those who are.
…one can imagine a world in which, to get on a flight, perhaps you’ll have to be signed up to a service that tracks your movements via your phone. The airline wouldn’t be able to see where you’d gone, but it would get an alert if you’d been close to known infected people or disease hot spots. There’d be similar requirements at the entrance to large venues, government buildings, or public transport hubs. There would be temperature scanners everywhere, and your workplace might demand you wear a monitor that tracks your temperature or other vital signs. Where nightclubs ask for proof of age, in future they might ask for proof of immunity—an identity card or some kind of digital verification via your phone, showing you’ve already recovered from or been vaccinated against the latest virus strains.”
I haven’t even heard of an outbreak related to an airline flight. Why all the pissing pants about airplanes?
Because we have already accepted the concept of airports as constitution-free zones?
Ever since the Patriot Act.

Semi-serious question: how many Americans prefer a more constrained existence and authoritarian government? IMO this group is far more dangerous than activist radicals shouting about some niche issue.
If the first vaccine dose is 80% effective, then those getting it should be waiting until everyone else gets it before getting their booster shot. But if Trump demanded that, there would be shouts of "science denier" from the usual suspects. However, in three weeks when President Bidenharris does they same, it will be "they listen to Science, not superstition."
Reason.com's benefactor Charles Koch is surely glad this terrible year is over.
Mr. Koch lost $5.37 billion in 2020.
His net worth collapsed to an abysmal $56,700,000,000 — putting him outside the global top 20. And Drumpf's high-tariff / low-immigration policies are entirely to blame.

https://www.aier.org/article/the-year-in-which-comforting-american-myths-were-ravaged/
Thanks in large part to Covid lockdowns, this year has left vast wreckage in its wake, with ten million jobs lost, more than 100,000 businesses and dozens of national chains bankrupted or closed. Up to 40 million people could face eviction in the coming months for failing to pay rent, and Americans report that their mental health is at record low levels.
But the casualty list for 2020 must also include many of the political myths that shape Americans’ lives.
It will be hailed as the year of the cleanest election ever.
Nah, after inauguration the Dems will "discover" some minor fraud in red states after the election and push through some legislation that ensures every state must use the super secure Dominion machines. Or if they are feeling less brazen, a brand new super secure machine called "Supremacy"

And so many people participating too, after 120 years of fixed decline, bang, biggest increase in history. Participation rates zooming up to the founding of the Republic numbers. It's a Biden miracle.
It was his tireless energy and inspiring intellect that whipped the huge crowds at his speeches into action.
"But one thing is clear, based on the United Kingdom's response to the variant and U.S. leaders' handling of the pandemic so far: The variant will serve as a handy justification for politicians to reimpose lockdown orders or refuse to lift existing ones."
Governments have successfully imposed their will upon the masses with often little in the way logical and proven justification. You did not think they would give up these powers easily, did you?
This wasn't predictable at all!

New COVID-19 Strain and Bungled Vaccine Rollout Threaten the 'Return to Normal' in 2021
The return to normal is "threatened"? What makes you think the Establishment will allow a return to normal in the first place?
We did elect a senile old white male as president. Seems normal.
"...The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is way slower and more disorganized than expected,.."
Not by me. This is being handled by the government; totally expected.
Further, the newly minted tin-pot dictators are enjoying their powers; there is scant incentive for them to 'return to normal'.
You guys should have been screaming about this last Spring, but instead we got a steady stream of Sullum's 'orange man bad' articles.
To be fair, they only had 9 months to plan how to distribute shots. It’s not like there is a Walgreens on every street corner or something.
Besides which the Walgreens might just give the shots to those who walked in and paid for them, instead of distributing them 'fairly'.
Distributing the vaccine "fairly" is racist. It must be distributed equitably to fight racism.
The proper way to fight racism is constant shouting by attention whores. Whatever promotes media attention, like arguing about vaccine priorities, is valued by the anti-racists.
I'll be fair here and say that a vaccine which needs to be stored at -98 degrees isn't something that every Walgreen's or CVS is going to be capable of. However, that speaks to a couple of things: 1) this vaccine is WAY over-engineered if it has to be stored at such extreme temperatures; and 2) the governors certainly fucked up by not having a concrete plan in place of distribution, simply because they didn't believe any kind of vaccine would be ready when Trump said it would.
Like I said below, they really need to be talking with their National Guard AGens and having them plan this. These guys have decades of experience in conducting mass innoculation events, and they should probably be the ones planning and executing this instead of the Burger King Kids Club commissars running the public health departments. The only thing those people specialize in is citing restaurants for health code violations; doing a mass logistical operation like this is completely beyond their capability or conception.
A sneak preview on how the SleepyJoe National Heath care will function.
It not just an equipment problem many states have boards that are struggling to determine an equitable distribution method. That will take months to figure out. It takes balls and BS to say white people get it last without getting wood chipper deliveries
The Pfizer vaccine has to be stored ultra-cold but Moderna doesn't (it just needs normal home freezer temps, so no problem with that one). And the Pfizer vaccine doesn't need to be kept extremely cold right up until administration. It needs to be thawed before administration, of course, and can stay in a normal refrigerator for up to 5 days to accomplish that.
https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/covid-19/info-by-product/pfizer/index.html
So vaccine storage shouldn't be that big of a deal. Keep it at a hospital with the ultra-cold storage capability and then take it to Walgreens, CVS or wherever for administration.
I suspect that the slowdown may be occurring because they're having people sit for 15 minutes after they get the shot to check for reactions. (I know two health care workers who have gotten it.) If you have to schedule appointments 15 minutes apart, that's a severe limit on how many shots you can give. Obviously with social distancing requirements you can't just send them to a waiting room with lots of other people. But somehow that has to be handled. I'm thinking give people the shot while they're in their cars and have them park for 15 minutes afterwards.
The vaccine committees who've gone to great lengths to specify who does and doesn't get vaccinated, and when, are also a part of the problem. You could vaccinate more people a lot more quickly if you just let the people who want it most go first. Most agree that it was right to put health care workers and nursing home residents first, and they're easy (or should be) because they can be vaccinated at work and where they live. But beyond that, just get the stuff to pharmacies and let people start getting online, texting or calling to make appointments. Then line up in your car and get vaccinated.
Having been in the National Guard, I would not place any faith in them. I don't know if they are any better or worse than the alternatives, though.
Faith is for church, and they certainly have more capability in this regard than state public health departments.
Do the walgreens have the proper storage needed?
Not to mention the rush the Neighborhood Scolds get from playing Mask Police.
ENB and Reason are at once excited for a government vaccine and sad that said governments cannot distribute it.
Also repeating any information from anyone in the UK as official news is ludicrous.
“New COVID-19 Strain and Bungled Vaccine Rollout Threaten the ‘Return to Normal’ in 2021”
Of course, the bungling is at the state level, leaving the alleged libertarians in a quandary about local is better.
And, oh by the way, there will never again be a "normal". As soon as I have depleted the Social security reserves, I will happily sit on the porch and quietly laugh as I ponder the coming fascist takeover.
I do not think it will be a fascist takeover. Just a slow decline , like a deflating balloon, where the US Presidents become figureheads of a bankrupt nation that used to be something, and are almost always Reality Show Stars or Cult leaders.
I believe this prediction, but I got it from Ready Player One, which describes the USA in 2050 as a shit show. The super rich will still be super rich, and the plebes will be plebes. The growth rate of the USA is declining, and the debt is increasing exponentially, so this prediction seems likely to occur.
Not a coincidence that more and more people are realizing that money printer go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, and now btc is nearly $30,000

https://www.zerohedge.com/geopolitical/are-we-really-going-build-back-better-after-dark-winter-part-3
In Part 1 of this article I laid out the case the “dark winter” narrative and how an experimental vaccine marketed like a tech product by Big Pharma and their cronies are part of a globalist scheme to reset the world and force us into subservience.
In Part 2 of the article I revealed how the “build back better” narrative is part of Klaus Schwab’s Great Reset plan to implement a one world command and control dystopia, managed by billionaire oligarchs and their dark forces.
Their “new normal” tripe is built on a foundation of falsity. The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 killed 50 million people when the population of earth was 1.8 billion, or 2.8% of the world population. This China flu has contributed to the deaths of 1.8 million people with a worldwide population of 7.8 billion, or .023%. The world was not locked down by totalitarians, no vaccine was created, the flu dissipated over time (probably due to natural herd immunity), people continued to live their lives, and the world returned to normal without global elites dictating how we had to live.
"Bungled" rollout? As if that is Trump's fault? Why are you joining Democrats with your anti-Trump hatred? Oh, yeah, you got zero votes in this election.
2020 is a phase shift in our governance.
This isn't typical partisan apocalyptism, just look at it for yourselves.
A trio of totalitarian hallmarks: 1) lockdowns, aka mass house arrest and small business closure, forced speech via mandatory mask policies, contact tracing, 2) organized political mobs, financially supported by Party operatives, and protected via selective prosecution of anyone that defends themselves against the thugs, 3) illegitimate election, with statistically/logically inconsistent results and refusal to investigate, in which blatant fraud isn’t the only factors – rules/procedures changed unconstitutionally at the last minute, insecure vote casting, polling place violations, and unaccountable vote tallying.
And that’s not even mentioning the overarching instititional factors in place that abetted this transition into totalitarianism: de facto monopoly control of mass media, education, tech, and Corporate America.
A dark winter indeed.
"Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann on ‘Gilligan’s Island,’ dies of COVID-19 at 82"

"...Wells died Wednesday of *complications* from COVID-19,.."
https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-12-30/dawn-wells-dead-gilligans-island-mary-ann
The Chron (no source cited by them) was even more mealy-mouthed, calling her death "covid-related".
When there are financial incentives to claim a specific cause of death, you'd be a fool to expect the reports to be anywhere near honest.
"COVID related" = died during the plandemic
Flu deaths have supposedly fallen by 98% this season. Luke Letlow supposedly dies from the coof in 11 days, until you find out that he went into cardiac arrest following a "medical procedure," which means the doctors or nurses fucked something up and ended up killing him, so they blamed it on COVID in order to avoid a wrongful death malpractice suit.
Anyone who sincerely believes that to be the case, and that the actual number of coof deaths are anywhere near accurate, is a gullible stooge.
did you see this?
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/coronavirus-death-certificates-minnesota-inflated
Minnesota lawmakers say coronavirus deaths could be inflated by 40% after reviewing death certificates
I hadn't seen it, but it wouldn't surprise me. If we tracked flu deaths like we did COVID deaths, those numbers would be higher by orders of magnitude than they are typically reported, too.

7/ ballot image or the original ballot image, so keep that in mind when we’re talking about adjudicated ballots.”
https://twitter.com/SherrieEngler/status/1344490971648716800?s=19
1. As a Graphic Designer with a degree, I didn’t understand why so many ballots were spit out as unreadable by the voting machines on November 3rd. But after watching Jovan Pulitzers testimony today in Georgia I now completely understand. Let me explain...
This seems to be getting to the scheme now. The areas in question all had these adjudicated ballots. These areas are the ones where in person votes matched surrounding areas in voting patterns but mail ins did not. This explains why adjudication records and original ballots were discarded.
Once again, you should really have let Rudy know about this earlier. For some reason, when he actually got in front of judges, he could not claim fraud, due to having no evidence or specific complaint.
The slow roll out the vaccination program is not unexpected. The Trump Administration seemed to be focused on getting a vaccine approved by the November election. There seems to be little interest in what happen the day after the election. Has the President actually done any work since the election? He seems to focused on enjoying the perks before they are gone.
Stuff your TDS up your ass, so your head has some company.
Lol what? Because as soon as Biden is president he's getting on his bike to hand deliver the vaccines like a paper boy?
What bike? He'll ship the vaccines on Amtrak trains. It will arrive six hours late and, because the refrigeration isn't working, will all be spoiled. He will then blame Trump for not green lighting "bullet trains" back when he had the chance.
I figured hand delivering the vaccines would give more opportunities to sniff hair. But amtrak will work too. Especially if he can come along and sniff the hair of passengers sitting in front of him.
You know, it's funny--a few months ago, CBS Sunday Morning did a hagiographic piece on how Democratic state governors were stepping up to competently handle coof management in the absence of Trump leadership.
What the fuck happened between then and now, that they suddenly don't know their ass from their elbow? Do they not have state historians that can provide them with information on how this was done after the polio vaccine was produced? Do they not have Adjutant Generals to school them on how these basic logistical operations work? Are their big-brained, advanced-degreed staff members clueless on any of these matters?
This doesn't appear to be the sick burn you thought it was.
My bad, guess Trump is blameless again what a saint.
Please address my comment which was that I saw no plan by this Administration that extended to the day after the election.
Lol, don't sulk.
You were being an idiot and got called out on it. Leave the faux martyrdom out of it.
"My bad,.."
As it always is, you steaming pile of lefty shit.
BTW, shit-for-brains:
"Governors are being WAY too precious about who gets this vaccine and we’re going to end up with millions of doses of expired vaccines if states don’t get serious about getting this out the door."
See "Trump" anywhere in there?
Damn, you people really loathe the taste of your own medicine, don't you?
Please address my comment which was that I saw no plan by this Administration that extended to the day after the election.
Why address a comment that has no merit?
If your fellow Democrats are so super-fucking smart, then this planning and distribution should be a breeze, right? What's particularly fucking hilarious is that the tweet ENB posted showed that the states had, in fact, gotten hundreds of thousands of doses. Did these people just sit on their ass the whole time and expect the logistics to magically work themselves out?
I'll add here that this criticism certainly isn't being offered in good faith. We all know you'd find something to bitch about, regardless.
They had the distribution plan to the states as has occurred. At what point do you think states should take over? Because your entire thesis is trump should hand put each vaccine personally.
Blame your own state government you leftist fuck.
"...What the fuck happened between then and now, that they suddenly don’t know their ass from their elbow?.."
Pretty much nothing; CBS was lying through their teeth and while it's now obvious, CBS is now pointing over there!
Do you want the feds managing every hospital you statist fuck? They are responsible for distribution, not application.
This is the same tired bullshit you and the other left retards tried to cry about with ventilators. The distribution from state areas to citizen is the states priority you retarded fuck.
"If you listen to the time frame they're talking about, it starts at about six months. We'd be at critical mass in June, and then [the estimate] went to about September, and now some people are talking about the end of the year," said New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo at a Wednesday press conference."
If anyone has performed more poorly during the pandemic than Cuomo, surely it's only de Blasio.
And what is it that Cuomo wants the government to do?
If he's saying that he should be in charge of vaccine production, distribution, etc., I beg to differ. I wouldn't put Cuomo or de Blasio in charge of a pancake breakfast at this point. No one has performed more poorly during the pandemic than those two, and they've been blaming everyone else for everything since the beginning.
We have three competing companies a profit motive pushing them to get their vaccines produced and distributed--and each and every one of those companies is far more competent than Cuomo or the state of New York.
And there are millions of eager customers willing to pay a premium for that vaccine, too. If Cuomo doesn't understand why his incompetent assistance is unneeded, then he's delusional.
Last I heard, Pfizer's vaccine needs to be distributed and stored at -70 degrees Celsius (-96 Fahrenheit). What does Cuomo know about distributing and storing vaccines at those temperatures?
Did any of those other people win a Hollywood award?
"It's not like I'm dumb. I'm smart and I want respect."
Governors are being WAY too precious about who gets this vaccine and we’re going to end up with millions of doses of expired vaccines if states don’t get serious about getting this out the door. These numbers are dangerously bad
Late-stage Boomers and Gen-X politicians are sure doing a bang-up job of showing how incompetent they are. These are basic logistical issues that are being held up over concerns about who should get it first.
Who gives a shit who gets it first? If the stuff has an expiration date, set up vaccination centers at city town halls, have people stand in line, and stick them as they go through the line.
Hell, if you really don't know how that works, talk to the Medical Group or Medical Battalion officials at your state military bases, and have them show you. Treat it like a fucking vaccine assembly line. Same at nursing homes and prisons.
I want the only qualification for getting the vaccine to be anyone who is too crap-their-pants scared for things to return to normal.
"...Who gives a shit who gets it first?.."
Any politico who depends on the woke vote. Any of them is more than willing to sacrifice loads of vaccine if s/he can be seen as distributing it 'fairly'.
For quite some time, this has not been a 'medical' problem; it is and has been a 'political' problem; that's how we ended up with droolin' Joe as POTUS.
Our political system pretty much guarantees that anyone with an iota of common sense will not be elected.
They're also getting wrenched by vaccine apprehension, I'm sure. Which is another reason why the Feds should just ship the shots to Walgreens and neighborhood PCPs and let it be handled organically.
Who gives a shit who gets it first?
Politicians and the media (but I repeat myself). In case you hadn't noticed, that kind of meaningless bullshit is a big deal to these types. Perception is always a key concern.
Politicians and the media (but I repeat myself). In case you hadn’t noticed, that kind of meaningless bullshit is a big deal to these types. Perception is always a key concern.
You know, it's funny. When the polio vaccine was produced, the distribution was targeted to the populations who were the most vulnerable--kids between the ages of 6 months to 16 years. Pregnant women were also encouraged to get the vaccine. And because Salk didn't issue a patent on it, the first two shots could be purchased by the government at rock-bottom, dirt-cheap prices and subsequently distributed and provided free of charge through pharmacies, although the booster had to be paid for out of pocket.
That's what happens when you have a generation that went through a Depression filled with public works programs, and then a world war, learning how logistics worked.
If we were following the example of the polio vaccine, they should have been provided to healthcare workers, nursing home residents, and prisoners first. That's where the vast majority of the cases have been. It also would have been relatively easy because these places are all centralized, and distribution should have been a breeze to plan.
Instead, we've got places like Colorado targeting journalists in the first group of recipients. It's a total fucking clown show.
"Who gives a shit who gets it first?"
The highest bidder makes sense to me.
If Amazon is willing to pay a premium to get their employees vaccinated, why shouldn't they be free to outbid the rest of us?
The movie industry and television production are starving for lack of quality content--because they can't put together teams or shoot in public for fear of the disease. If the vaccine is more valuable to them than it is to other people, and they have the means to pay for it, then why shouldn't they be allowed to save their industry?
I mentioned the NFL downthread. If Jerry Jones decides it would be in his best interest to pay a premium for a huge batch of doses for the vaccine--and made it available to all season ticket holders for a price--why shouldn't he be free to do that? If his would-be season ticket holders are guaranteed a vaccination, they're far more likely to buy season tickets for next season.
The ramp up costs associated with getting this vaccine out into the wild is higher than they are when production and distribution achieve scale. That's why, for instance, Elon Musk concentrated on building what amounted to high price luxury models when he was rolling out Tesla. You need early adopters who are willing to pay a premium to be first.
I'm sure putting the equipment and infrastructure together to store and transport vaccine at less than -70 (negative seventy) degrees Celsius is expensive--and if there aren't enough customers who are willing to pay a premium in the beginning to help finance those ramp up costs, then it will delay the roll out.
It may very well be that the poor and minorities are hurt the worst by the progressives' insistence on "social equity".
The highest bidder makes sense to me.
That's already happening with uber-rich people figuring out ways to buy a place in line. That's also guaranteed to piss a lot of people off.
One of the reasons it's the smart thing to do may be because it gets the people who are pissed off the vaccine faster than they'd get it if there weren't people paying a premium to get it first.
That doesn't exactly enable working-class people who don't have the funds to compete with the uber-rich to get vaccinated if they want to, Ken.
"That doesn’t exactly enable working-class people who don’t have the funds to compete with the uber-rich to get vaccinated if they want to, Ken.'
I'm guessing you have no alternative which will deliver better results. Using the market tends to have that effect.
Again, you don't seem to be considering the effects of scale, start up costs, etc.
Because coveting is popular doesn't make it smart.
Again, the reason Musk will soon be introducing $25,000 Teslas is because so many people were willing to pay a premium for a luxury car when they were starting out. He needed to finance those start-up costs before he could afford to start introducing low margin models. Now that those factories are all in place--paid for by the more expensive models--scale allows them to start offering lower priced cars.
If you have to spend $1 billion dollars to put a factory together to build Teslas, then the first car out of the factory costs $1 billion to manufacture. If you can sell two of them, they only cost $500 million a piece. If you sell enough of them so that you've covered the cost of the factory, then you can start making cars at a lower price point.
It's the same thing with the cost of manufacturing and distributing vaccines--and the equipment and facilities necessary to keep them at less than negative 93 degrees Fahrenheit. The first batch of vaccine is prohibitively expensive, but those costs will fall as scale is achieved and early adopters pay a premium to be first in line. If no one is allowed to pay a premium to get in the front of the line, then everyone will necessarily need to wait longer for the vaccine.
These facts don't change because jealous people who have no right to interfere in this anyway covet something that doesn't belong to them.
The reason smart phones are so cheap that children and homeless people can afford them is because early adopters were willing to pay a premium for the smartphones when they first hit the market.
If early adopters weren't allowed to pay a premium to get to the front of the line, market penetration would be shallow and the phones wouldn't be so cheap that even children and the homeless could afford them.
eternally rising COVID-19 case counts...
Probably a good indication that we’re being lied to
Case count rising. Fatality rate falling. Hurry up and panic!
I . . . um . . . can't stand the NFL.
I maintain that much of the huge drop they saw in ratings over the course of this season was about a lot more than just the lack of fans in the stands making the games less fun to watch. Watching millionaires disgrace the national anthem and the flag pissed off a lot of consumers, and they're not about to forget about it anytime soon. We won't know for sure how much damage was done until we get a pandemic free season started with fans in the stands for comparison, but whatever the cause, the damage to their ratings and their market appears to have been significant.
For instance, . . .
AT&T is close to calling off its auction of DirectTV--because they can't find anybody willing to pay more than a fraction of what AT&T paid for it five years ago. A lot of that is probably due to streaming generally, but the primary draw of DirectTV was always NFL Sunday Ticket. If NFL Sunday Ticket subscriptions are down dramatically, what do you think the chances are that former NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers are disproportionately suburban women who voted for Biden?
Not likely.
More than likely, those subscribers are disproportionately guys who think the national anthem and the flag are things that probably shouldn't be denigrated. The reason activists choose to denigrate these symbols is because it pisses people off, and it really shouldn't be surprising if doing something to piss people off actually pisses them off.
Point is, the NFL is apparently getting worried about their appeal to future, and they're trying something to remedy that which seems both rational and awful to me--they're trying to get children hooked on gambling.
http://www.nick.com/nick-assets/properties/NFL-hub/NFL-NICK-PLAY-WEEK-16-PICK-EM-PRINTABLE-12.03.pdf
That sheet looks just like a parley card you'd pick up to make a bet in Las Vegas. NickPlay is a partnership between Nickelodeon and the NFL that lets kids (targeted demographic for Nickelodeon appears to be 6-14 years old) fill out a parlay sheet on a website in order to win prizes if their teams win. They're also broadcasting games on Nickelodeon with special effects, like SpongeBob celebrating TDs and players getting "slimed" in the end zone.
Should this be legal?
Of course it should!
Should parents give their kids permission to do what amounts to dry-hump gambling?
So long as you aren't violating their rights, who am I to tell you how to raise your kids?
Should the NFL be doing this?
I think it's disgusting regardless of whether it should be legal. It's like marketing cigarettes to children. They should be ashamed of themselves! It's like Marlboro selling bubble gum cigarettes so kids can play at smoking, too. The bubble gum cigarettes didn't cause cancer, but when you inhaled on them, there was a powdery sugar substance inside them that made it look like you were smoking when you exhaled.
Not satisfied with disgracing the national anthem and the flag in front of people's children, they're now stooping to trying to get kids addicted to gambling at an early age.
What's next? Where do they go from here?
Ken, I really don't care if some of those people gripe about the flag, but I do care that what was a scoring contest is now a contest awarding "SJW-awards".
I got a book to read instead.
Yeah, making it all about social justice, BLM, etc. was part of it, but doing it in opposition to patriotic displays of the flag and the national anthem was a big part of that.
If they really wanted to be effective in their marketing of social justice issues, they should have embraced patriotism rather than disgraced it.
This is among the most effective criticisms of American culture for being racist during the civil rights era and being opposed to a war that the United States was fighting I've ever seen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFLy8eGtSYo
He's making the racists and the warmongers look unpatriotic there.
The social justice warriors are hurting their own cause by being anti-patriotic. And I strongly suspect the NFL is victim of that.
I remember candy cigarettes, but not the kind with powder inside. I guess my folks couldn’t afford the fancy ones.
we had to roll our own candy cigarettes
The other disgraceful example I was thinking of, when the NHL was in strike mode, the Florida Panthers (worst team in the NHL at the time) was desperate to sell season tickets for finance reasons--for a season that might not happen. They'd already tried skank night, and that wasn't about to save the franchise, so they came up with a promotion, where if you bought season tickets, they would throw in all the beer you could drink for free.
Should that be legal?
Or course!
But that doesn't mean it wasn't disgraceful.
When they say, "There's one in every crowd", they usually mean a crowd of about 20. If that holds up, it means that for every 1,000 fans you get to the stadium, there will be about 50 of them getting sloppy drunk, being obnoxious as fuck during the game, and then driving home drunk off their asses. Over the course of the season, not only are you likely to make the environment in the game unbearable, but some kids are likely to grow up without a parent because you gave fans all the beer they can drink for free.
When they set the price of beer high at stadiums, it isn't just because they're trying to maximize their profits. It's also because they're trying to minimize your intake.
https://bleacherreport.com/articles/142952-ten-cent-beer-night-the-worst-idea-ever
When you have a kegger at your house because the parents have gone on a trip for your uncle in law's funeral? The chances of things getting out of hand are close to 100%.
Whenever they give out free (or really cheap) beer like this, it's always a disaster. The teams always end up apologizing. Lessons are learned. Most people don't want to buy tickets to be in that kind of environment--and certainly not with their kids. The NFL should be ashamed of themselves for this. It should be a PR disaster--from a libertarian perspective even. The reason we don't need regulation is because PR disasters are more than sufficiently effective at discouraging misbehavior.
I'm starting to realize that the demoralization of the proles is the point rather than an unintended consequence, and that our bread & circuses are a good place to start.
I'm sure the social justice bullshit over the last couple of years pissed off a lot of loyal customers, but I suspect it's much broader than that.
-COVID protocols cut off sports for so long that the traditional audience changed their viewing habits and are watching other things now, or doing work around the house, or any other assortment of activities that they found to take up that place in their day.
-The gameplay is utterly atrocious because of the lack of minicamps and preseason. The NFC East is about to have a division champion with a losing record, who will still make the playoffs.
-Simply put, watching games without an audience in the stands is boring. Teams are piping in crowd noise for big plays like a WWE event. They look like glorified exhibition matches.
I read somewhere that Thanksgiving viewership was down more than 50%.
People don't have anything better to do on Thanksgiving waiting for the Turkey to be done.
I suspect they're not watching football on Thanksgiving because it isn't considered a wholesome family activity by at least some important participants.
Even before fantasy football, people use to tune in to watch the Lions and the Bears play on Thanksgiving--even in parts of the country that didn't give a shit about the Lions and the Bears.
I think the NFL is in trouble.
The reason people have used patriotism in advertising since forever is because that advertising has always been effective, and being on the opposite side of that marketing made plenty of Americans associate the NFL with all the villains of the world who also hate America and average Americans.
"...Even before fantasy football, people use to tune in to watch the Lions and the Bears play on Thanksgiving–even in parts of the country that didn’t give a shit about the Lions and the Bears..."
I did. We enjoy making T-day dinner, all of it, and as the fragrance of the various dishes spread throughout the house, watching a football game (where I had no favorites) was an enjoyable pastime.
Once it became a matter of awarding various SJW points ("Jones scores, but he also gives back to the community; here's the clip!"),
well, as mentioned above, I got a book to read.
Current one is "Stalin: Passage to Revolution" (Suny). I hate the SOB, but I should know how he became a murderous monster.
"2020 is finally drawing to a close, thank goodness. Will 2021 be markedly better?"
History says very likely. And even more likely that the 2020s will be measurably better than every previous decade for most people.
But psychology tells us that many people will think things are worse (and that behavior is also documented in history).
Media will, by nature, continue to flog the negative. And while 2021 will not be an election year, our new constant-campaign model will ensure a degree of the same shit-show we just lived through.
Word. 20 years ago, you'd be writing for this rag.
"It can't happen here"
Normalcy bias is a hell of a drug.
So is hair-on-fire paranoid delusion.
Things are definitely getting better for the ultrarich, the upper middle class and the developing world, but the last 20 years have been a poop sandwich for the Western proletariat.
"So is hair-on-fire paranoid delusion..."
Any comparison between 2019 and 2020 finding a drastic reduction in liberty is no 'delusion'.
Reality asks you to take a look.
Two hundred thousand more votes than voters in PA, but questioning election integrity is only something nutty conspiracy theorists do.
https://mobile.twitter.com/russdiamond/status/1343622485946880007
The problem for PA Republicans is that more than a million new voters registered since 2016, and 3/4 of them were not Republicans. And with higher turnout, that explains why the two major candidates can get more votes in 2020 than they did in 2016.
more than a million new voters registered since 2016
Wow, out of a total population of just 12 million people, never mind eligible voters. That's an amazing increase. Practically miraculous really...
How many of those new voters were predeceased?
"That’s an amazing increase. Practically miraculous really…"
Not really, for a highly contested Presidential election where one of the candidates is a disgusting person.
I can think of a half dozen more highly contested elections in the last 100 years, you historically illiterate shill. Each one with far more riding on them and each one seeing a decrease in voter percentage.
This wasn't even close to being Wilson vs Taft vs Roosevelt, let alone Nixon vs Kennedy.
You're bosses need to hire shitposters with slightly more historical knowledge than the couple of Voxsplainers under your belt.
He just couldn’t take one more of those mean tweets!
"Not really, for a highly contested Presidential election where one of the candidates is a disgusting person."
You mean slobbering Joe?
Think about what you are saying. You're being gullible.
https://www.pennlive.com/elections/2020/12/there-were-not-more-votes-than-voters-in-pa-ap-fact-check.html
That "factcheck" misrepresented eligible voters in some precincts as registered voters. You guys really have no shame, huh.
And yet you claim to be a citizen of a weak, underpopulated, socialist, barely educated country. Canada is a piece of frozen crap.
You produce what exactly? You personally. What nerve do you have to lecture Americans? Go fix your own home.
I see that you'd rather shoot the messenger than offer an honest response to the claim. Not surprising; lefty shits tend toward shoveling bullshit.
You can go to the SURE website and see that the numbers alleged are not true. The premise of the tweeter is completely false.
https://www.dos.pa.gov/VotingElections/BEST/Pages/BEST-Election-Stats.aspx
This is why I cannot believe anything you guys post. You throw every allegation possible, without doing the barest verification. Seriously, why won't you just confirm that you aren't posting bad data?
ENB, re 'bungled vaccine roll-out' some data and context would have helped. How much of each vaccine is available, how much is distributed, how much administered. I can quickly provide the latter two. According to CDC numbers, about 12.5 million doses distributed (Bloomberg is reporting 19.9 million) and 2.79 million doses administered. (https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#vaccinations) I won't draw conclusions on efficiency of federal versus state programs, but the numbers do speak for themselves to some degree. Some of this may be folks' natural distrust of new medicines, which runs across sociopolitical lines, but may sadly impact the disadvantaged to a greater degree. Or asshats saying that they won't get/approve the vaccine, because, Trump. Looking at you, Cuomo, Harris -more an air-raid klaxon than a dogwhistle from those two.
I'll start with - "New COVID-19 Strain and Bungled Vaccine Rollout Threaten the 'Return to Normal' in 2021"
No they don't. Pols love their new supar powahs and they'll not let go without a fight. We're already at 'normal' at least for the next few years until some are voted out.
Finally, "Florida prosecutors, still intent on punishing... Robert Kraft"
I can't help but wonder, given how clearly butthurt Aronberg is, who was it that threw a handful of sand in his Vaseline.
Wow, maybe I was wrong and things may return to normal sooner than I thought. I wish the Californicans luck in recalling Newsom. It couldn't happen to a better guy, literally.
"... sowing doubts that we'll reach mass vaccination status in anything like a timely manner."
The quicker way to reach herd immunity would be through not wearing masks and keeping businesses open. But then, for the left, a return to normal is not what they want as it means an elimination of their biggest dream, the power to control people. This "crisis" will be followed by many others, each with the goal of controlling people and making them dependent on government—if not subservient to it. Remain terrified, Question nothing. Stay home.
"New COVID-19 Strain and Bungled Vaccine Rollout Threaten the 'Return to Normal' in 2021"
No, GOVERNMENT action is what is preventing the return to "normal"
If someone stated that regarding Covid 19 immunization, the departing administration blew it, I don't believe I could seriously dispute the speakers position. That said, respecting Biden and his administration, their claims/promises, I'm given to shake my head. It would be lovely to see the fruition of Biden promises/claims re the battle against Covid. I also think it would be wonderful for my bet on The Daily Double to come in 6 lengths ahead of the field. I'm not holding my breath waiting for either of the above mentioned as the lack of oxygen makes me unsteady on my feet, and inclined to fall on my face.
"If someone stated that regarding Covid 19 immunization, the departing administration blew it, I don’t believe I could seriously dispute the speakers position..."
What, specifically, could the administration have done better?
SleepyJoe will stop the virus on DAY ONE.
The COVID-19 vaccine rollout is way slower and more disorganized than expected, sowing doubts that we'll reach mass vaccination status in anything like a timely manner.
Around 60 percent of Ohio nursing home staffers offered the COVID-19 vaccine have said no thanks, according to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.
Geese, I wonder if these two things are related. And I wonder how much anti-vaxer Kamala Harris is responsible for the suspicion against the FDA approved vaccines. In the mean time, Trump got us the vaccine 4 years before the Democrats and "experts" thought possible so we're running well ahead of schedule.
Tramp did not assist in getting the vaccine. Operation Warp Speed was fruitless in that regard.
Would...as long as that's a bottle of Welch's Sparkling Grape Juice she's holding, that is. (I may be a yard-dog, but I'm not a stupid brute.)
The enemy is the virus, not each other.
Anyone else notice that the main picture looks like she's got one black nipple and one white nipple, due to the confetti falling right in front of her? 😀
Mmmmm!....Multicolred pasties!
We'll, the good news is that 2020 is over. The best thing that happened in 2020 was that Trump was voted out of office and the worst was covid. And the most surprising thing is that the two go hand in hand.
At least now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. It will take a least a year or two before my business gets back to normal, mostly because I depend on people working and a few universities getting back to normal. But a couple years of harder work isn't that big of a deal. Hopefully everyone else who was negatively affected by the virus does better as well. Unfortunately some are done for good, but new businesses will take the place of the old.
Can't wait to see what the future holds for us and the world.
same thing that i want to say.
Vaccinating the entire population is pure liberal/Democrat lunacy. Why would any nursing home residents want a vaccine that was not tested using any nursing home/frail/multi health condition type participants? There is no proof as to how long the vaccines might last, no proof that they might work against other strains, no proof that they stop deaths, no proof that they will keep people out of the hospital, no proof they will not harm your natural immune system. It is all guess work just like most of this article is. People refusing these new RNA/DNA altering substances have every right to do so and be weary of the consequences of which NOTHING is known. Happy to see 60% refusal rate. I believe this new strain is another attempt to create a fake pandemic and lock down the country for another year. I will ignore it and fight it any way I can.
My problem is that others may be misled by your paranoid conspiracy bullshit.
The question we should be asking is what did Israel get right? They have somewhere between 12-20% of the population already with the first dose. More is on the way to deliver the second round and keep vaccinating the rest of the population.
Part of the answer I think is that for all of the craziness that is Israeli politics the leadership actually cares. They have been preparing for months. There was none of the self interested mixed messaging we have been getting. The healthcare system was ready and delivers. The people know and are coming together to fight a merciless adversary, not each other.

"Bungled vaccine rollout"
GO FUCK YOURSELF ENB.
No it isn't perfect. Anything this massive is going to have hitches.
Obama had FOUR FUCKING YEARS and still couldn't make a functional website.
OVER FOUR MILLION DOSES HAVE ALREADY BEEN ADMINISTERED. That number will double in weeks if not days.
What the FUCK have you ever done that is remotely useful?
I AM SO FUCKING TIRED OF YOU NARRATIVE PIMPS.
Go walk the streets, at least then you'll be earning it.

Hasn't anyone else noticed that since 2000, Americans are woefully inept at managing complex systems. The failure of: restoring electrical power in Iraq, 9-11, Katrina, H1N1, Ebola, this vaccine rollout, COVID testing failures, etc.
These failures should not be surprising, but expected. We're too big to succeed. Hell, we can't even petition our government for a redress of grievances.

I'm with you on the argument you're making, but all the cocks are a bit too much.
I need to learn to code so I can make big penises. In the history of Presidential candidates, has there ever been a worse one than Biden? And please don't say Trump, because: SO UNORIGINAL. And yet Reason LOVES Biden. They love Dementia Joe and the gal who slept with married and 30 years older than her Willie Brown. Seems to me that Libertarians would be concerned about the concentration of Big Brother power fomenting in the Democratic cabal, but nope. It's Orange Man Bad every single day.
Maybe because, you know, Biden's not president yet. You liking to draw penises should probably be kept to yourself.
Bob Dole? Michael Dukakis? No. Biden was worse.
"The gal" is Willie Brown's brown willy holsters.
Not in the habit of judging assholes but since it's New Years; I'll say Hillary* was the absolute worst in my adult lifetime.
*that too isn't very original but the truth rarely ever is.
It's almost 2021 and I can't believe I’m still forced to have this conversation with people. It is okay and normal to be gay, and it's more than okay to love phallic aesthetics. Frankly, the 'cocks' were the only interesting part of his posts. Probably the only worthwhile thing he's ever posted here.
Bereft-the-left, all differences aside, I commend you on your openly queer displays on a blog filled with vitriol and hate, and your willingness to be who you, laughing in the face of a world who judges people deemed to be 'outside the norm'. May your 2021 bring many magical moments and may you find strength and acceptance in embracing who you truly are.
I stand corrected. Kudos on your stirring defense of the phallus as a political statement.
I can't wait for civil war 2.0. Then I can kill all the fags and woke indiscriminately. Especially faggot niggers, trannny queervos, and dumbass atheists too. And your dumb ass is on the list. Suck cocks while you can, because the end is coming.
