Brickbat: Before You Go

Qatari officials took all of the women off of a flight scheduled to leave for Australia and strip-searched them. An infant, believed to be newly born, had been found in a restroom at the airport terminal, and officials were reportedly examining the women for signs that one of them had recently given birth.

No, and they shouldn’t necessarily be above suspission.

      Pregnancy over age 50

The oldest recorded mother to date to conceive was 74 years, and the youngest mother was 5 years old. According to statistics from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, in the UK more than 20 babies are born to women over age 50 per year through in-vitro fertilization with the use of donor oocytes (eggs).[9]

Maria del Carmen Bousada de Lara is the oldest verified mother; she was aged 66 years 358 days when she gave birth to twins; she was 130 days older than Adriana Iliescu, who gave birth in 2005 to a baby girl. In both cases the children were conceived through IVF with donor eggs.[10] The oldest verified mother to conceive naturally (listed currently as of 26 January 2017 in the Guinness Records[11]) is Dawn Brooke (UK); she conceived a son at the age of 59 years in 1997.[12]

  4. Sounds like these women weren’t very good mothers if they didn’t want to find out if they had given birth.

  9. But the real problem is that here in the Western World [just thought of Steely Dan song] we continue to use horrible terms such as “sexual preference” and cannot accept that anyone can identify as a woman, biology notwithstanding.

  10. They found the mother but released her with no charges when she explained she abandoned the baby because “it was gay”. Officials advised her to next time “use the roof”.

  11. Can’t find a recently relevant Reason article to make this comment on, but has anyone seen this today? New Hampshire is requiring restaurants to collect contact information (“your papers, please”) from all patrons:

I can imagine my response as some combination of “fuck off” or “John Doe, 555-1234” or any other made up number. And yes it is unfair to say “fuck off” to the poor schlep who’s just trying to make a living working at the restaurant, when it’s the state threatening the restaurant at the pointy end of a gun to comply or else. But that’s how this shit takes hold, is people not pushing back on it.

The US has anonymous baby drop boxes, but the airport isn’t one of them.

    1. Yes. Hold all passengers, including the men, until one admits it. Not begin examining all the females against their will.
