Joe Biden's Proposal To Double the Minimum Wage to $15 an Hour Won't Help Small Businesses
President Donald Trump said he'd leave it to the states to decide if a minimum wage hike was appropriate.

Former Vice President and Democratic nominee Joe Biden wants to help small businesses during the pandemic by raising their labor costs with a minimum wage hike.
"I do," said Biden in response to a question at tonight's debate about whether now is the time to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, before going on an extended riff about the need for a federal small business bailout. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour.
"We have to help our small businesses by raising the minimum wage? That's not helping" shot back an incredulous Trump. "How are you helping small businesses when you're forcing wages [up]? What's going to happen and what's been proven to happen is when you do that these small businesses fire many of their employees."
"There is no evidence that when you raise the minimum wage businesses to go out of business," rebutted Biden, saying that a minimum wage hike was needed to increase the pay of first responders.
Trump, in response to a prompt from debate moderator Kristen Welker, said he would consider raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, but also said it should be left up to the states, saying "Alabama is different from New York. New York is different from Vermont. It should be a state option." Make of that what you will.
Back in July 2019, the Congressional Budget Office released a report finding that a $15 federal hourly minimum wage would result in 1.3 million workers losing their jobs, while raising pay for another 17 million workers.
While the effects of the minimum wage on unemployment are not without controversy, most studies find they lead to higher unemployment or disemployment (where firms hire fewer workers over time, give current workers fewer hours, or outsource more tasks to machines or customers.)
A detailed study commissioned by the Seattle city government to examine its own $15 minimum wage found that worker pay rose about 3 percent but hours worked fell by 6 to 7 percent. These disemployment effects were hardest on the lowest paid, least experienced workers. That means the proposed wage increase won't only hurt businesses, it'll likely hurt workers too.
A lot of the debate and empirical evidence about the effects of raising the minimum wage is predicated on more normal economic circumstances where a global pandemic isn't scaring away customers, of course, and local and state governments aren't forcibly closing businesses or requiring them to operate at reduced capacity.
In the current environment, wage hikes would likely be devastating for the countless mom-and-pop operations on the verge of failure. In fact, many of those small businesses are already maxed out as they struggle to keep employees on the payroll in order to qualify for loan forgiveness under another federal program.
Why Biden thinks that small businesses already coping with massive declines in revenue and increased operating costs would benefit from having their labor get more expensive is a bit of a mystery. While Trump was right to point out the negative consequences that can come from raising the minimum wage, he undermined his own case by equivocating on whether doing so was a good idea.
Biden, during his minimum wage answer, said that Congress should allocate more money to struggling businesses. If he has his way on the minimum wage, they'll need all the assistance they can get.

In what state are cops, firefighters and EMTs drawing minimum wage? Cops in my town make $100K+ (seriously).
When cornered you always pull out the first responder or teacher card.
Biden wore out the first responder card last night. Disgusting pandering.
hey, teacher's aides are first responders too
So are teacher’s pets.
Not so.
If they were, they would be at work.

Biden floundered all over the place tonight. Some of the winners.
Talking to NK was like the us being friendly to Hitler (they weren't they just stayed out of the war)
Bidens public option would give affordable coverage to people who qualify for medicaid but can't get medicaid (ummm?)
He was a wreck. He kept repeating memorized talking points over and over, looking at his notes (and watch) constantly.
He also said he wouldn't ban franking, but that he would end the oil industry.
He completely fell apart.
Yes, allow Congresscritters to continue to mail propaganda to their constituents! What a genius!
'Zero net CO2 emissions by 2025' was another doozy.
Not even if Year Zero starts with your Term, you senile, lecherous, bullying sack of filth and corruption.
He actually said his plan would help those who qualified for Medicaid but didn't have the wherewithal to get Medicaid. Those are the closest I remember his exact words. Which would mean, what, there's some minimum wealth or income you need to take advantage of Medicaid benefits you qualify for?
"Which would mean, what, there’s some minimum wealth or income you need to take advantage of Medicaid benefits you qualify for?"
Yes. One must meet minimum income and minimum net-worth levels, though it's a bit complicated.
No, they aren't. There are income and net-work maximums for Medicaid, not minimums. There are minimums for exchange policies, because if you're under those...you qualify for Medicaid. But there's no such thing as somebody who's too poor to qualify for Medicaid.
Sorry, you are of course, correct. I need coffee before posting. I should have said something like "minimum qualifications," which, in this case, means "poor."
Yeah, you heard what I heard, and it made zero sense.

Maybe he means energy and motivation? Like the Dem voters who can't figure out how to get a voter ID card, so requiring one is voter suppression?
Also...
"Joe can afford to lock himself in a basement. He's made a lot of money someplace..."
Made Joe bring up his foreign benefactors on his own.
There were too many to keep track of them all. Claiming that not one single person lost their private health insurance to to ACA. He's correct in that it wasn't just one. It was between 4-5 million who lost it because it didn't include things like pediatric dentistry for everyone, including people who don't have kids, and didn't include maternity care for me or prostate care for my wife.
“In what state are cops, firefighters and EMTs drawing minimum wage?”
None of them.
Some volunteer firefighters make less than $15/hr. It may even be a majority. But, you know, they're volunteers. They don't do it full time and they have other jobs.
And they typically do it for their OWN communities, knowing that the whole department will respond if their OWN home is on fire.
Without volunteer fire departments like this (and MINE), many people wouldn't HAVE a fire department. They don't do it for the pay, they're basically just reimbursed for their time.
I think that a lot of the union contracts have pay tied to minimum wage. That's why you always see the union people who definitely make more than minimum wage lobbying for minimum wage increases.
Why Biden thinks that small businesses already coping with massive declines in revenue and increased operating costs would benefit from having their labor get more expensive is a bit of a mystery.
I don't think that Biden being a moron is particularly mysterious.
To answer your question, going from $7.25 to $15 *would* raise the pay of EMTs in some places, at least over what entry level EMTs were making 10 years ago. They weren't making the minimum, but there was a time when newly graduated Basics were making less delivering patients to UNM hospital than the folks across the street from it were making slinging breakfast burritos.
Of course, no one quit class to go make burritos, either.
Oh, lots of people would get raises, that don’t lose their jobs. That’s because many union contracts are minimum wage + X. Why else would unions that represent workers that all earn above minimum wage spend union dues on campaigns to increase minimum wage?
Exactly!
No, I know. Apologies if my reply was insufficiently clear that I still think it's a terrible idea. Just making the point about EMT pay.
Yeah, that was a remarkably stupid comment.
But then, it was said by someone who sincerely believes that we "must help small businesses" by doing something that everyone with half a brain knows will hurt small businesses, their customers and their employees. The companies that can tolerate minimum wage increases are the same big businesses that Biden claims to demonize - the ones that can afford to pay the overhead of unions.
Well Dems have already tried shutting down small businesses to slow COVID-19, and burning down small businesses to end systemic racism, so why not jack up their labor costs to put them out of their misery?
"It's really a mercy killing at this point."
He said there was no evidence to suggest that it would drive small companies out of business. It doesn't take an accounting degree to understand that when you double expenditures, something else has to give. You either aren't buying stuff to grow, gotta fire employees who don't produce that much, and you sure as hell will have businesses who are perched on a ledge, particularly with COVID and for quite a while afterwards, is enough to push them off. To swipe a line from Joe himself, "Oh come on man!" This isn't fucking rocket science. It's also doesn't take a genius to understand that when you double someone's wage, any related costs go up as well such as employers' SS "contribution", workman's comp, FUI, SUI, etc.
But damn near 50 years being on the government payroll, I wouldn't expect ol' Joe to understand the first thing about business.
Obviously making it more expensive and onerous to put people to work will be good for the economy, especially in an an economic downturn. a doy
(/s)
Liberals don't think of wages as a business cost, they think of it as something people deserve (even if not working)
they also seem to think anyone who owns a business is rich (and undeservedly rich at that).
That is a revealing bit of finance illogic. In a progressive paradise, people always get what they "deserve"--as determined by the virtuous people in charge (and using whatever victim criteria are in fashion that month).
Proglodytes are mainly highly educated barristas who believe they deserve to be well compensated for earning an advanced degree, not for the work they do.
‘“There is no evidence that when you raise the minimum wage businesses to go out of business," rebutted Biden, saying that a minimum wage hike was needed to increase the pay of first responders.‘
Is that it? We all pay more shit so that first responders can get a raise?
And no one points out the ridiculousness of this?
We’ve just given up on having meaningful political leadership, haven’t we?
Even if you buy the bogus studies that say jacking the minimum wage up in an already wage-inflated jurisdiction is fine, it proves nothing about the effects of doing it where 'prevailing' minimum wage is already low.
Raising minimum wage to $15 in seattle might not be a disaster since very few there make less than that anyway. Doing it in podunk, WV could destroy the local economy. I agree with Trump, minimum wage should be a state by state issue.
If i could go back in time i would tell the founders "be more clear on the 2nd amendment, and be MUCH MORE LITERAL about the definition of 'interstate commerce'
“ I agree with Trump, minimum wage should be a state by state issue.”
No government at any level should have the authority to control agreements between free people.
What? And throw out one of the pillars of fascism?
The other is dictating production.
You forgot price controls.
Thanks, i should have been more clear. Ideally i am against the minimum wage but in a reality where its clear the people are going to accept that some level of government is dictating a minimum wage, i'd infinitely prefer its the states and not the feds.
I agree, but that honestly isn't a federal matter, which is what the office of President has to concern itself with, and therefore, it's moot with regard to this discussion. What States do is a matter for the courts, not the Administration. Federal minimum wage should be repealed entirely, but Constitutionally, you've then got 50 more battles that must be won at a State level. Oh, and none of that is going to happen politically, and so standing on the soapbox is a foolish endeavor.
Also, shall not be infringed was as clear as could be at the time.
"The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. It shall be considered treason for any government to attempt to infringe this right."
I dunno, I bet it could be made more explicit... 😀
I stand corrected. If only they had wood chippers!
And, at that, the *original* text of the second amendment, as written by Madison, but later modified before ratification, was as follows: "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed; a well armed and well regulated militia being the best security of a free country: but no person religiously scrupulous of bearing arms shall be compelled to render military service in person."
So it actually *was* clearer, prior to ratification.
A lot of case law is about what "arms" are protected. Maybe they should explicitly say that even scary-looking guns are protected.
Or simply get a dictionary to understand arms vs ordnance.
The truth?
Any arms.
ALL arms.
The Second Amendment does not even INSINUATE that ANY arms are exempt or excluded from 2A protection. It's perfectly clear: if it's considered an "arm," it's protected.
This.
Plus in some of the court rulings since then I believe the logic used was that people should be able to possess arms in common use by militaries at the time. Most of the canons used during the Revolutionary War were privately owned, the idea that some random dude could have the biggest, baddest weapon available at the time was A-OK with the Founders.
And yet I'm legally prohibited from buying an F-35.
Yep.
The (wrong) decision in US v Miller was decided based on the reasoning of whether or not the sawed-off shotgun Miller possessed had a "legitimate militia use." SCOTUS believed that a weapon HAD to effectively be a "military grade" weapon in order to receive protections.
The irony (or cynical ploy) is that the Dems NOW are claiming that military weapons are specifically PROHIBITED from 2A protections.
While I disagree with the SCOTUS in the Miller decision (i.e. a weapon does NOT have to have an identifiable militia use to be protected), their reasoning makes WAY more sense than current Dem logic, which would leave precisely ZERO weapons without 2A protections, given the Miller decision AND contradicts their OWN arguments about ONLY militia members having the right to arms (which would necessarily be "military grade"). The Left is not only disingenuous, they're so dumb they can't even keep their own arguments straight...
Ironically, it's entirely legal to own a cannon,,, at least in most states, if not all. So it's not even all scary looking ones. It's ones that you could reasonably use to defend yourself and not depend on government to come save your ass.
It shouldn't even be a statewide issue. $15 not hurting too much in Seattle doesn't mean it wouldn't be devastating in some podunk town out in eastern WA.
Not to mention that first responders (esp. police and firefighters, as people think of them) are some of the highest paid, most coveted jobs with the most generous pensions of all. Then they throw in teachers as first responders (to what, runny noses?), who generally make less, but work only half the year.
Trump said he'd "consider" it when pressed with that specific follow-up question, so as not to look intransigent. People want a president to be able to consider things, not necessarily do them. It's the answer you give as a parent when a child pleads for something, so you don't sound mean.
Well said. Still would have been nice if he’d put some thought into it since then and had a better answer.
True.... Trump has said that he'd consider many things in the course of his presidency and the last campaign. I've "considered" a lot of things, as it helps to take the wind out of an opponent's sail, and to not close options just for the sake of closing them. It's a matter of not picking a side in a battle that isn't and probably won't be before you, or at least dealing with it later if and as necessary. Same thinking goes into SCOTUS nominee answers to stupid Senate questions. NEVER commit on hypothetical cases as proposed by those who wish to destroy you.
Reason is always so right. $15 is not enough. The minimum wage should be the median wage and it should reset every year to reflect the cost of living.
While we are at it, can we raise the median IQ to 125?
Genocidal MONSTER!
reported
Nice
By definition of IQ, NO.
By the logic of progressives, as easy as using a pen and a phone.
And a few PPSh-41s...
That you, OBL?
A lot more clever than OBL has been of late.
The minimum wage should be the median wage
If parody, bravo.
If not, um, what would that make the maximum wage be?
That's easy. It also should be the median wage. Why do you hate equality?
That's easy.... accordingly, it would be whatever that dufus B4L is making. Nobody is ever for reducing their own wages. I know a guy who last year believed that taxes should go up for anyone making more than $75K per year. His salary was $65. He got a new job making $95K, and now believes that nobody under $125 should see their taxes increase. I suspect he believes he will top over 100 next year.
Wait, Biden is from Lake Woebegone?
To be fair, the minimum wage could easily be raised to $15 if the federal government were to subsidize it. Just like it's going to subsidize new ventilation systems for schools, more teachers and more pods for smaller classes, plexiglass dividers for restaurants, solar and wind power development, healthcare and all those other things Joe mentioned. Because the federal government has an unlimited supply of free money.
Yang 2024!
With even spicier memes.
Yang was only going to pay people 12K a year (6 bucks an hour) with his Universal Basic Wealth Transfer program. He's going to have to jack that up next time.
$12,000 a year is a lot more than $6 an hour when you work zero hours.
Oh no the liberaltarians think the minimum wage sucks!
A federal $15 minimum wage is retarded.
There are huge discrepancies in cost of living and many other factors between coastal communities and the middle of the country.
It won't help people living on the coasts - they already make more than that or they couldn't afford to live there. So the goal is clearly to impose this on midwestern and other 'flyover' states.
Well, I make about $30/hr as a salaried professional. Living in 'Flyover Country'. So, if I end up having to order a Big Mac from a high school kid (or dropout) who is guaranteed a minimum of $15 an hour, when they used to get ~$7-10 - maybe - I'm going to want some sort of reciprocal pay raise to go with my post-graduate degree and the increased cost of my workday lunches.
The balance will be maintained. There is no way that skilled people just roll over and let the unskilled, unwashed, nearly unemployables narrow the gap. They put a lot of effort in to rise above that level.
You won't be getting anything from a high schooler making $8/hr because he will have been replaced by a kiosk or a higher skilled, more productive worker. That high schooler will just have to give up on having a little gas money and spend his time preparing either to go to college/trade school, the military or his parents basement. There won't be many other options.
you forgot National Service
Fast food jobs are already paying 16 bucks an hour in Silicon Valley, with 401K.
Yeah, but do you know what it costs to rent an apartment there? I also know a guy who made over $100K per year in the mid-70s working on the Alaskan pipeline. A diner dinner would also cost him $50 when the rest of the country was paying $3.
“There is no evidence that when you raise the minimum wage businesses to go out of business,” rebutted Biden
Trump should have replied with "Malarkey!" (or whatever the kids say now) and cited a few examples. But, NOOOO!!
Joe's statement was misdirection.
Evidence of businesses going under due to wage increase is not nearly so strong as evidence of businesses cutting staffing.
The Federal Minimum Wage is the single greatest killer of entry level jobs.
Thank you.
The minimum wage and child labor laws.*
*I do not endorse pressing youngsters into service, but all teens and a LOT of other younger people can do incredibly safe jobs perfectly fine.
Nothing so focuses the mind of a person on doing well in school and/or acquiring valuable skills as time spent doing hard work for low pay.
Back in college I worked restaurants as kitchen staff. On my 21st birthday I happened to be in the bar of one of my employers, waiting for friends. The owner came by and offered me an exorbitant raise from my summer wage if I would leave school and come work for him full time as kitchen manager.
I laughed. Then I felt bad for laughing in the guys face because he was serious. So I thanked him and declined.
Agreed.
But MANY of the most valuable skills are actually acquired WHILE doing that hard work for low pay:
- Show up ON TIME
- Get the work DONE
- Do what you're ASKED by your boss
- Understand that you EARN money. NOTHING comes for 'free,' not even your PAY
- Understand that money=time=your LIFE. When someone takes something from you or damages your property, they are STEALING your LIFE from you, one little bit at a time
- More skills=more pay AND less physical work, but MORE intellectual work
- More hours (if you aren't salaried)=more money
- There are NO solutions, only trade-offs (Sowell)
- EVERYTHING is an economic choice of some kind (education, leisure, family, etc.)
"More hours (if you aren’t salaried)=more money"
I have a great cartoon about front line supervisor trying to 'motivate' a construction crew so a project can get back on schedule. He is babbling on in the background while a working in the foreground is thinking "when you are paid by the hour, there is no significant difference between a problem and an opportunity"
As many first responders are unionized, I suppose a raise in the minimum wage would entail automatic base wage raises for them, depending on thsir contracts, but there is no direct connection there.
What Biden said on the minimum wage makes no sense.
Ok, so Sleepy Joe engaged in some minimum wage sophistry. Yeah, businesses won't go under, but the staff will bear the brunt of the pain with an increase of the minimum wage to $15. Their hours will be cut, and staff will be RIF'ed. We know this from our experience with Obamacare. That is what the objective data tell us. People at the lowest rung will suffer the most.
Regarding the debate, I hate to say this, but this was a draw (at best) to me. Maybe I am being too hard on The Donald, or maybe my expectation for Sleepy Joe were too low. Much to my surprise, Brain-Damaged Biden actually stayed on point, and directly answered questions. I was hoping that POTUS Trump would land a knockout punch, but that did not happen.
The Hitler comment literally made me say...what the fuck, where did that come from???? Bad analogy, but I think Brain-Damaged Biden was trying to make the tired Trump = Hitler allusion. I don't think that worked.
Last point...The moderator did Ok. Much, MUCH better than Chris Wallace.
This election is gonna be agonizingly close, I think.
Debate score; Trump = 3; "moderators" = 0
(Basement Bunker Biden gets a participation certificate)
Imagine trying to run a small retail or food service business in any rural area and being forced to pay $15/hr. You'd have no choice but to either go out of business or automate to the point that you can get by with just a manager and a service tech. Paying cashiers and line cooks $15/hr in Podunk would double the cost of the food and you'd have no customers.
Not too late for those Reason writers to retract the Biden endorsements, is it?
They endorsed Biden!!??!?
Liberals believe that with diligent management they can sort the population where everyone has their Goldilocks slot. So, if you tell Biden that 20% of minimum wage workers will lose their job if the minimum wage is increased he would consider that a huge victory because 80% are now earning more. Now, all he has to do is handle the remaining 20% - one of these days - eventually - maybe not.
The thing is, this is the perverted strategy the left frequently uses.
The left finds a way to advantage a larger proportion of the population at the expense of the minority. They buy the votes of the 51% with the money of the other 49%. In the case that there ISN'T a clear majority/minority stakeholder division, they generally use guilt to do it. See: Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, Obamacare, etc.
It's a cynical ploy designed for pure political power and it will be one of the things that destroys this country.
Anyone else notice that Biden threw his kid under the buss. he said i never got any money from foreign nations. I didn't hear him say his kid didn't but then i only saw that snippet on the news this am
Eight years watching Obama will teach you a lot about underbussing people.
15 bucks an hour? Why so stingy?
That's only 30K per year, or 600 a week.
People were making that on top of their regular unemployment checks, for not even working.
Now you only want to pay them 600 a week for working?
Make it 25 bucks an hour, or go home.
50! I demand 50!
Why not? Joe figures, I don't have to pay it, and I won't be the one losing my job. Win-win!
The thing is, this is a perfectly reasonable economic argument.* They set it up this way on purpose. They're trying to INCENTIVIZE government dependence: "Why work, when we, the Wonderful Democrats(TM) will give you unemployment PLUS $600! We're looking out for you! ...just like Hunter Biden's crack dealer..."
*It is, however, a perfectly unethical policy argument.
I think Trump did well.
Biden harping and lying over the 500 kids was pretty disgusting.
I can't figure out why he didn't just explain the truth:
Those 500 kids were either:
A) ABANDONED by their parents (as a parent, I can't fathom WHY I would leave MY kids at a detention facility and NOT show up EVERY DAY until I got them back).
B) USED by coyotes to get into the country
It's that simple. Of all the THOUSANDS of kids the Democrats are claiming Trump separated from their parents, does anybody ACTUALLY believe that they hunted down all the rest of the parents, but gave up or intentionally didn't find the parents of the last 500?
He did mention at least some of that - that these kids were being used as pawns by adults seeking to come here illegally.
What he should have had was some data on how many kids we have successfully returned to their parents/guardians - all at the time and expense of the American taxpayers.
Illegal immigration and uncontrolled borders are not cost free.
I don't feel like he drew a straight line between the two topics, it seemed like they were both mentioned, but not together (and not particularly clearly).
With small businesses already having problems staying in business now how will increasing the minimum wage to $15/hour help them to stay in business? It will not! it will, in fact, cause these businesses to fail faster than they are now. Now if the economy returns to the level that it was before the pandmeic and improves even more the demand for workers will cause the wages to increase naturally. It will a government passing a law mandating the higher wage. Now what will hold down wages for these minimum wager jobs will be the number of immigrants legal and illegal that is allowed in the country. Especially the illegal immigrants will hold down the wages because they will work off the clock and at a lower wage and take their pay in cash.
I’am made $84, 8254 so far this year working online and I’m a full time student. Im using an online business. Here what I do,.for more information simply open this link thank you… .Read More.
Has anyone at Reason recognized the irony of promoting decriminalizing sex work and then not suggesting that on-street car washing should be decriminalized?
And did you check out how many of the car washers were here illegally, which may be why they don't want unions?
Living in Seattle, which has had a $15 min wage for five years now, no one has seen any harm from it. If a business can't pay its workers enough to thrive on, it shouldn't be in business. And workers should look at other ways to create their jobs, like co-ops, where there is no need for the expense of unions or bosses.
Ok, so then you're also on board with the idea that if a slippery bastard who hasn't upped his dishwasher game by the age of 40 and doesn't show for 3 days after payday should just be cut loose and allowed to starve. If a man can't EARN $15/hour, he shouldn't be allowed to have a job and survive. Same shit you said, but looking at it from the opposite end. They aren't fucking worth 15/hr.
Oh, and your fucking cost of living in Seattle is off the charts, double what it is here. And your minimum wage there is $13.50 now, not $15. It doesn't go to $15 till 2021. And you're also wrong about companies going under or moving, but playing the info game with a moron isn't worth the bother of explaining further.
