Conspiracy Theories Abound After Trump Tests Positive for Coronavirus

President Donald Trump's Thursday night announcement that he and First Lady Melania Trump have tested positive for COVID-19 has kicked up a range of realistically troubling scenarios as well as a host of conspiracy theories. The most prevalent of the latter seems to be the idea that the Trumps don't really have the new coronavirus and the president's announcement is some sort of cynical election ploy.

It would be a strange one, considering the negative toll that any perception of illness can have on a candidate. What could Trump possibly gain by having people think he's sick?

Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!

Some have suggested that Trump could falsely claim to have the illness but not to get very sick from it in order to bolster his claims that COVID-19 isn't all that serious. Others call Trump's announcement a ploy to portray the president as strong and healthy when he shakes the disease.

The timing seems off for such antics, however, as a lot of Americans are already casting their ballots. If Trump was going to fake COVID-19 and then quickly "recover" as some sort of campaign strategy, this would seem an especially stupid time to do so.

"The galaxy brain take is that Trump is faking COVID to get out of the debates or distract from the tax stuff," tweeted author Mike Rothschild, who is writing a book about QAnon. "But his image depends on being a bull god street fighter Adonis who outworks men half his age. He wouldn't pretend to be sick and weak. If anything, he'd cover it up."

Considering how cavalier the Trump administration has been about masks and other measures meant to contain the coronavirus' spread, it shouldn't take a conspiracy theory to explain how we got here.

"The President's infection is the predictable outcome of the same malignant irresponsibility he has been modeling for his followers from the beginning of all this," writer Daniel Summers commented. "Regardless, I wish him the same recovery from illness I'd wish for anyone else."

Donald and Melania Trump may have caught COVID-19 from advisor Hope Hicks, who has also tested positive for the disease and was aboard Air Force One with the president on Wednesday. The situation tidily and unfortunately highlights how precarious COVID-19 test results and safety schemes based on them can be.

"Hicks tested negative for COVID-19 Wednesday morning, so she boarded AF1," according to CBS News reporter Weijia Jiang. "She developed symptoms during the day and received a second test, which came back positive. The White House knew about this Wed evening but Trump still had a fundraiser Thursday."

Vice President Mike Pence and his wife tested negative for the virus, according to Pence's press secretary:

As has been routine for months, Vice President Pence is tested for COVID-19 every day. This morning, Vice President Pence and the Second Lady tested negative for COVID-19. Vice President Pence remains in good health and wishes the Trumps well in their recovery.

"This month, her charges were vacated after the discovery of new evidence, including racist emails between the two prosecutors indicated they were 'biased against Asians.'"

      I looked at all states and provinces idiotic enough to have mandates. Of the 32, 19 rates went up. 8 went down but in most of those cases they were already on a down trend and 5 neutral.
      
      Then look at those without mandates.

        I know a few people who tested "positive" only to be informed later that test was faulty for some reason. Detroit Lions QB Matt Stafford tested positive prior to the start of the season. It created a sh*tstorm in the local media with all the typical condemnations of attempting to play professional sports in the middle of a pandemic. It turned out that the test was wrong. The Lions are 1-2 and COVID has little to do with it.
        
        We'll see how this plays out. Because it's Trump, there has to be some larger agenda at work rather than a COVID test being positive.

        I'd also suggest you take a look at the death tolls from the 1957 and 1968 flu seasons. More than a million dead worldwide and more than 100,000 dead in the US both times. This when the world population was less than half of what it is today. No one's saying this is a mild flu. It's a relatively bad flu. It's not remotely close to the Spanish flu.

        Masks do little to alter your fate. The shit is cumulative - but masks don’t even block the virus in the first place - at least not the type of masks that everyone in public is wearing.
        You’ve got to be within reach of someone shedding virus for a period of time. And even then, if you’re already immune, it makes no difference.
        So, going to the store and standing six feet away from someone with the virus for five minutes in line, isn’t gonna be enough exposure unless they are making out with you while blowing their nose on your shirt the whole five minutes.

      I think it's really important to make the distinction between detected virus and actual illness at this point. We know the PCR tests are very sensitive and will come out positive in some cases when there is no viable virus present.

      Noise. And I don't mean like "You're speaking words that don't mean anything." I mean something like 20+ million Americans have had corona, millions more worldwide and something like a handful of people have "relapsed". And that's with everyone combing the data like they're gonna find Wonka's Golden Ticket. It's statistical noise.
      
      Moreover, it should be noted that these people contracted COVID, survived, and (supposedly) contracted it again. If re-infection were a considerable risk of killing people, we'd be counting differently. There would be 150K dead from primary infection and 50K dead from secondary infection.
      
      The fact that we're hip deep in COVID, looking for any way anybody can die of it, and only found 2 is pretty much testament that you can't be reinfected and likely won't die if reinfected.

      In Texas, early voting is done in person. For 3-4 weeks prior to election day there are early voting locations in churches, libraries, or other facilities. There are fewer voting locations but you can vote at any early voting location. So on election day I would have to vote at the nearby middle school, but before that I can vote at any voting location in the county, possibly in the state. This allows a lot of flexibility of when and where to fit into your schedule.

Libertarians (rightly) fought for years to combat the idea that the AIDS virus was some sort of karmic retribution for immoral behavior. The fact that the left, and libertarians today are trying to stigmatize COVID is an awful, and disgusting behavior and it needs to stop.

And this isn't about politics- it is about decency. I have kids in school, and the last thing I want is for someone to tell them that they caught the virus or, god forbid, someone's grandpa died because they couldn't wear a mask correctly or somehow acted unclean. Knock. It. Off.

        This looks to me like this is a case of "mix a bunch of shit together, use questionable statistics and come up with some answers that really mean absolutely jack". I guess they get citations and keep the sweet, sweet grant money flowing, but this adds little.
        
        Seriously, if you just look at the fact that there are a bunch of studies that conclude "no effect", what you should really be taking from this is that the effect is small if present and it needs statistical data mining to pull out the traces.     Note the levels of certainty. There are millions of examples of people contracting the disease while wearing their mask, because they did not social distance. In some cases it was because masks give them false senses of security, and in other cases it was because sometimes you just cannot distance.

        Yes, Larry Hogan. The mask mandate is for entire state, unless something changed just recently. Counties have some leeway for opening businesses though now, based on the phase recommendations.

A Massachusetts woman has been freed after spending 17 years in prison for a wrongful conviction of murdering her parents.

You know, this kinda makes me want to question the statistic that says you're far more likely to be murdered by a family member or an acquaintance than you are to be murdered by a stranger. Is that statistic based on convictions? If cops and prosecutors "solve" murders simply by grabbing the nearest likely looking suspect and pinning the murder on him, doesn't this statistic become a sort of self-fulfilling prophecy?

  This isn't a good case for it. The judge here didn't spring Ms. Choi out of jail because she thought Choi was innocent. She did it because she was butthurt by racial bias the prosecutors exhibited in office communications with each other. A better piece of evidence for thinking she didn't do it, is that her two prior trials ended with hung juries. Her brother was acquitted in his trial, and turned around and testified against Sis in one of her trials (the sequence of who got tried for what, when, is a little unclear.) It doesn't sound like the parents got cooked by accident.
  
  I'm not sure you can prove absolutely that she committed a murder. But you also can't prove she didn't commit one either. To the headline writers' credit, they are at least calling it a wrongful conviction, which it may very well have been. Though bias on the part of the prosecution, absent any other wrongdoing, being enough to set a felon free nearly two decades later, is a door I'm not sure we want to open.
  
  She caught 17 years. More than a lot of murderers catch.

  Trump's re-election was doomed when the Dems took back the House in 2018 and Trump seemed to have not learned a thing from that defeat. More 7th grade behavior for another two years. Then the Covid 19 shutdown put the nail in his coffin. With the expected loss of the Senate, and little chance to regain it in 2022 due to the demographics, we libertarians will have little to cheer until the American voters wake up and elect adults who don't believe in Santa Claus.

    I did a big analysis at the time here in comments--before the Midterm. There's almost always a big reaction against whatever party is in the White House--when a new president faces his first midterm.
    
    The same thing happened to Clinton in 1994 and Obama in 2010. It would have happened to Bush Jr. if it hadn't been for the midterm election in 2002 happening after 9/11 and before we invaded Iraq.
    
    There wasn't anything to learn from the midterms of 2018--other than that there's almost always a big reaction against whatever a new president does in his first 100 days. Terrorist attacks that unify the country behind the president being the exception that proves the rule.

        I don't believe any voters look back and say "Well, historically the incumbent does worse in mid-terms, so I'm going to vote against him for that reason." 2018 was a combination of Trump's supporters being over-confident and staying home, the Left was fired up by Hillary's loss and GOTV, and Trump's behavior out of the gate (Inauguration crowd size, picking a fight with a Hollywood C-lister), and personnel decisions that were questionable. Weren't many of the lost seats in districts that Trump actually won in 2016?

        I think it was a reaction to some of the things Trump did--and some of the things he didn't do.
        
        And he fell within the middle of the spectrum of every other president--who didn't have thee benefit of a national tragedy to legitimately rally the American people behind him.
        
        Most presidents try to make major changes within the first 100 days of their presidency, and because the House represents the population proportionately, there's usually a big reaction to those changes in the House in the first Midterm. The more controversial the changes (see the reaction to Obama's use of TARP and his ObamaCare as examples), the bigger the reaction against them.
        
        If Hillary Clinton had beaten Donald Trump, the House probably would have become even more Republican in the 2018 midterm. If Biden wins in 2020, the 2022 midterm elections will most likely put the House in Republican hands again.
        
        The outcome of a chess game is constrained by the number of squares on the board and the ways the pieces can move. And looking at the way this first midterm game board is shaped, you're gonna lose a bunch of seats in the House--no matter where you stand on the issues. You can lose a hell of a lot more than the median by doing especially controversial things, but unless you get the Cuban Missile Crisis or 9/11, you're losing a lot of seats.
        
        In other words, the issues don't really matter--unless it's an issue that's completely out of your control like 9/11. There's some extra risk in tackling especially controversial issues, but when you throw a right cross, your opponent will throw a jab into your ribs. Unless something dreadful and unexpected happens, you probably can't win the presidency without taking losses in the House during your first midterm.

The craziest conspiracy of all is still how TDSers believe Trump downplayed and lied about Covid and its risks. We have him on audio and also have his actions: he was aware of it in mid January, did not trust the lies peddled by the CCP/WHO, and began travel restrictions by the end of the month. TDSers used these restrictions to attack him and call him a racist. His public actions were too 'harsh' and banning travel from China will magically cause millions of Americans, who harbor little to no animosity towards Chinese Americans, to genocide them instantaneously as a result. Within literally a day, we have grandstanding health commissioners from all our major cities claiming Trump's statements about Covid are "misinformation" and that you should go out in public to Lunar New Year and Gay Pride parades and gather en masse. Politicians can delete their tweets, but everything is permanent on the internet. We have Pelosi on video, DeBlasio on Twitter, etc.

Trump banned most European travel to the US in early March. Within 2 months of Trump's initial travel ban, Pelosi and the House formally open an investigation into his "mishandling" of the pandemic response.

        Leftists use that caricature because it rules out voluntary cooperation. They feel that cooperation only happens under government duress. When you promote the "every man is an island" idea then you just give them fuel for the fire.
        
        Liberty means being responsible for yourself, but it also means being free to cooperate with others without asking permission or obeying orders. The latter is just as important as the former.

        Freedom is not something given to you and certainly not something inflicted on others, which is really paternalism that wears the trappings of freedom. Paternalism is easily rescinded as we can see today with the emergency mandates. Freedom is something you fight for yourself and it means you are responsible for yourself.     Just outside our little 'burb there's a 'T' intersection. On the one corner, is a Jesuit retreat. On the other corner is an elementary school. Behind that is a Presbyterian church. The property owner at the top of the 'T' put up 2 large (3'x6') Trump/Pence signs. Somebody spraypainted "Fuck Trump" over them. They probably would've helped Biden more by tearing down the 3'x6' signs and putting up 4'x8' signs. Instead, every Sunday school mom and parent of a K-5th grader that rides the bus gets to reconcile any incremental support they may have for Biden with explaining "Fuck Trump" to their gradeschooler/Sunday school kids.

      This not being able to see facial expressions really sucks. Especially for children. That's kinda necessary for social interaction and reading people.
