Woman Hog-tied and Thrown in Cop Car, Rides Face Down, Begs for Mercy
"Please don't let me die back here."

"I beg you, master. Master!" That's what a black Colorado woman, Shataean Kelly, 28, cried out to the police officer who had hog-tied her and thrown her in the back of his cop car after arresting her for being in a fight. She slipped off the seat and with her face to the floor, hands and feet shackled behind her back, she begged, "please don't let me die back here!" as he drove her for another 21 minutes to the precinct.
The officer, Levi Huffine, later claimed he couldn't see what was happening in the back seat, reports CBS Denver. But on camera footage of the ordeal, her words, crying, and prayers are very easy to hear, including, "Officer, please. I can't breathe."
https://youtube.com/watch?v=gNNTgsxsosc
The incident took place in Aurora, Colorado, in August of 2019, but the footage was just released this week. It if seems eerily reminiscent of the story of black woman who was also hog-tied by Aurora police, it should. Last week Diane Redleaf reported on the case of Vanessa Peoples, a mom whose toddler wandered away at a family picnic, prompting a passerby to call the police, who then called child services. When a caseworker came to Peoples' home and she didn't hear the knocking, the worker called for backup and three cops entered Peoples' home, guns drawn. In the hubbub that ensued, they hog-tied Peoples, dislocated her shoulder, and took her to jail. This was during a "child wellbeing" visit in 2017.
Aurora has also been the focus of protests over the death of Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old who was walking home from getting his brother an iced tea on Aug. 24, 2019, when someone called 911 to report that he was waving his arms, wearing a mask and looking suspicious.
When the police found McClain, who was unarmed, they struggled to handcuff him, finally felling him with a "carotid hold." McClain vomited, apologized for this, and told officers he couldn't "breathe properly." Emergency medical technicians injected him with the sedative ketamine. McClain had a heart attack on the way to the hospital and died six days later.
Upon the release of the video showing Kelly hogtied and upside down in the cop car, Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson said she was sickened by what she saw and believed Huffine had hog-tied Kelly as "punishment," not for any actual safety reason. Tied up and contorted this way, Kelly could have died of positional asphyxia, said Wilson. "[Huffine] is lucky she did not die in the backseat of that car. Because he would be—in my opinion—in an orange jumpsuit right now."
A review board had recommended a five-week suspension, but Wilson overruled them and fired Huffine. He has appealed his termination.
In the meantime, Aurora has dropped all criminal charges against Kelly.

You forgot the one about the passed out drunk cop his car.
What does that mean in English?
I think it means 'Sometimes Bad Is Bad' is in his patrol car and about to pass out.

Yeah. I'm living in Aurora because it's the cheapest part of Denver metro area. You get what you pay for?
Depends on which part of Aurora. Anywhere on the northwest side has been a trash dump for over 30 years. The closer you get to Centennial, the nicer it becomes.

Was she wearing a mask? That’s what’s important.
There seem to be an awfully lot of bad apples.
Well, before we rush to any hasty judgments...
Inquiring minds (like JesseSPAZ for example) want to know! Was this woman a MARXIST, maybe?!?!?
Fuck off, Sqrlsy.

I agree. Kelly was fighting. The officer was exercising undue restraint and even the police chief is being hyperbolic about how someone could've died by being hog tied in the back of a car.
Best of luck to the chief getting anything but the most vindictive, bottom-of-the-barrel recruits the next time she needs to fill a patrolman position. It's like a real life Police Academy movie. Stupid prizes for everyone all the way around.
The police were being verbally abused and acted appropriately to arrest a resisting combatants. Notice that she started crying abuse then the “ I can’t breath” mantra. How can any rational person not see the reason this is happening nation wide is because we’re listening to it. Like a child having a temper tantrum we need to ignore them. Can anyone wonder why the police ignored the crowd around Floyd saying he can’t breath. The story of a group crying wolf.
"please don't let me die back here!"
They didn't.
All the boy who cried wolf histrionics are cancerous, trying to sell a false narrative of brutality, while inevitably making it less likely that those truly in distress will receive the help when they need it.
This was an issue with George Floyd discrediting himself. They found him sitting in a car with the windows up and all of a sudden says he's claustrophobic when it comes to sitting in the back of the police car. One of the officers even notes the discrepancy back to Floyd.
Now the "I can't breathe" protestations, which he did *before* a knee ever was within 3 feet of his neck, aren't quite so believable. Similarly for those same protestations when a knee was on his neck.
Could he really not breathe while he was standing? How about when the knee was on his neck? Who the hell knows? Only Officer Kneely has any idea how much pressure he was putting on Floyd's neck.
Stop resisting arrest. Stop lying to the police about health conditions.
How can any rational person not see the reason this is happening nation wide is because we’re listening to it. Like a child having a temper tantrum we need to ignore them.
Yup. The sad part is the lines are pretty clear and Reason keeps either ignoring them or deliberately fucking with them.
1. Did police arrest someone who committed a victimless crime?
2. Did police unequivocally shoot/kill someone who didn't commit a non-violent offense?
Otherwise, the argument devolves into a vague case against either libertarianism or an oxymoronic argument where every American has agency except police officers. Unless they do the right thing, then all police officers should have agency to violate the law as they see fit.
Verbally abusing a cop is NOT an arrestable offense dumbass. I do it all the time because these pussies with guns fucking deserve it.
Shitthatneverhappened.txt
What is wrong with all these cops? Do they not read the news? Are they so puffed up in themselves that they think this behavior won't look bad because "this time is different"? It's funny that proggies look down on the masses as so ignorant, naive, and gullible that they have to be minded like infants, and here are their enforcers, more ignorant, naive, and gullible than anybody could imagine.
Again, between Kelly and the officers putting her in the back of the car and between the fact that she tries to open the rear door of the police car from the interior (in hand cuffs) and then proceeds to directly threaten them and their families as she's further restrained, she clearly makes the officers look more intelligent and civil.
What is wrong with all these cops? Do they not read the news?
This was from 2019, not after Fentanyl Floyd's overdose.
"[Huffine] is lucky she did not die in the backseat of that car. Because he would be—in my opinion—in an orange jumpsuit right now."
That's funny right there, I don't care who you are.
The chief admits that her officer put this woman's life in danger and admits that if the woman had died the officer would be arrested... but then doesn't arrest him for endangering her life. It's totally just a few bad eggs. Ignore all the good eggs that cover for them.
"I hope your kids burn in hell. I hope your momma burns in hell. I hope your wife burns in hell." - Shataean Kelly
Yeah, once again Reason, this is not the police brutality story you are looking for.
I don't know what transpired to the arrest, but the footage clearly shows brutality.
Kelly was hand-cuffed in the back of a locked patrol car. The officers pulled her out and hogtied her, why? Because she pulled on the door handles? Although she was putting in the effort, she wasn't escaping. They should have left it alone.
Additionally, when the cops have someone under arrest, they are responsible for that person"s well-being. The verbal threats are meaningless. Her profanity doesn't excuse the cops for ignoring their responsibility to pull over and help her. Think of it this way, you are not allowed to physically abuse a child under your care even if he is an ungrateful mouthy brat.
Police brutality is police brutality whether the victim is a criminal, crude, or completely innocent. The cops, having the authority to be physical, should be held to a very high standard to ensure they don't abuse that authority. The name calling and empty threats should not affect how they perform on the job. There is no excuse for those actions captured on camera.
Well stated.
Why don’t you show everyone how to be a cop mouth.
Being the victim of violent crime then seeing police arrest the perpetrators using such kit gloves when he resisted was an abuse of power by police, against the victim. Cops are people, spit in there face you deserve what you get. I am pro victims rights and want law enforcement to have more protection. Let’s make it a felony to film a police officer acting in the line of duty without his permission.
What a boot licker.
Patsaul has a friend or relative who is a cop, otherwise he wouldn't think well of these pussy-assed bitches known as cops.
Show us on the doll where the po-po touched you, pussy-assed bitch.
Think of it this way, you are not allowed to physically abuse a child under your care even if he is an ungrateful mouthy brat.
You never heard of spanking?
Also, having gone to school in Aurora, I guarantee a lot of the black parents in that city beat the shit out of their kids worse than any cop ever did.
And that makes it okay, huh, dumass? Learn how to reason, especially on this site before EVERYONE knows you are a dumb ass.
You should have been spanked more as a kid, too, you pussy.
Think of it this way, you are not allowed to physically abuse a child under your care even if he is an ungrateful mouthy brat.
You don't have kids do you? You are absolutely allowed to subdue and restrain your own children, force them into the back of your car, and ignore them for the entire car ride to whatever your destination is. To just about any child capable of understanding/shouting the invectives she was shouting, nothing that happened above would be considered child abuse. Especially if the child was mentally disturbed or prone to violent outbursts.
I guess I shouldn't expect too much life experience or too deep of thought from the "Police should always be super nice to everyone they arrest and always apprehend people with the bare minimum of restraints necessary." crowd. Probably haven't grown out of their cartoon conception of reality where no one ever dies or gets critically injured and everyone is always friends at the end of the episode.
They covered Breonna Taylor too. That one deserves to be highlighted and emphasized over and over, but cases like this need to be covered too. Even the worst people have rights.
Let's not forget that the Aurora police also tend to overreact to stolen car reports.
I said, let's not forget that the Aurora police also tend to overreact to stolen car reports.
Not living in/around Aurora, I can't say I would make a better choice, but I'm beginning to think that either Wilson wasn't the best choice for interim chief, the position is powerless and symbolic, or both.
Firing the officer who further restrained a suspect who was being noncompliant (and verbally assaulting/abusive) while insisting that the officers who pointed guns at kids just needs more training?
It would be interesting to see if the officers who got fired mistreated one race while the officers who didn't mistreated another race. Such a thing that should/would/could *also* constitute racial discrimination in the workplace.
Are we sure this was police brutality? It sounds more like a BDSM scene to me.
"Harder" is my safe word.
As long as your asshole isn't bleeding, you're in the clear.
That was funny.
So, I'm convinced. Reason is just a Chinese publishing house pumping out propaganda under the names purchased from American writers.
WTF does this story have to do with the 'Free Range Kids' movement?
It ties back to another woman who was also hog tied by police in the same city in connection with a CPS welfare check on a child.
No it doesn't. It's like saying a parking citation for a red car is tied to a hit and run arrest for the driver of a red truck. The story doesn't even allege the same officers performed both arrests.
Unless Lenore's trying to indict the Aurora PD or do away with hogtieing as a restraint position, the two have nothing to do with each other. And if Lenore's trying to indict the Aurora PD or hogtieing... WTF does that have to do with the 'Free Range Kids' movement?
Your name should be Mad STUPID if you truly believe what you say. Back to kindergarten for you little man.
Stop punishing the rest of society for your daddy issues.
Sorry, above wasn't meant in reply to you.
In the meantime, Aurora has dropped all criminal charges against Kelly.
At the behest of whomever she was fighting or because of the video?
When you're so Reason, you can't see the nature of your own bias.
Bad acts by the police, but the " I can't breathe" Thing has sort'a jumped the shark.
So, since the author didn't bother to offer any solutions, here, I guess we should all just come up with our own?
Is this article a call for us all to rule the night in Portland with our friends in anti-fa?
Can anyone tell?
Or is this just outrage porn?
I agree, Ken, cops should be able to murder anyone they want. Cops are the good guys and what they say goes.
You're right. The "I hope your kids, your mom, your wife, and your dick burn in hell." is the absolutely the sort of message every good guy and right-thinking citizen should automatically fall in line behind.
Why are you so triggered by mere words?
Words are violence.
So if *the cops* yelled "I hope your kids, your mom, your wife, and your dick burn in hell.” *at her*, you'd be equally deferring?
I hold cops to a higher standard than the typical people they have in their back seats.
No you don't. You pretend to. The same way children wish for invisible pink unicorns.
So are you going to pay them more for that higher standard? Even if you do, are you just going to hope that the woman above, or someone like her who was released without charge, never applies to a police force?
Because no matter what stupid prize you pick, it's plainly obvious to anyone who isn't absolutely biased against all police officers everywhere on principle, that they showed more civility and restraint than she did. That if she'd shown them even a fraction of
the restraint that they showed her, she'd have had a nice quite ride to the precinct instead of being hogtied.
Are you saying you support the "I hope your kids, your mom, your wife, and your dick burn in hell." message? If not, why not?
I'm not triggered by the words. My assertion is that you can't say "I hope your kids, your mom, your wife, and your dick burn in hell." and then turn around and say that "I can't beathe." is some sort of legally actionable medical diagnosis.
"I agree, Ken, cops should be able to murder anyone they want. Cops are the good guys and what they say goes."
If that's what you think I said, you should go read a book.
Oh, I'm sure he's read Marcuse, Adorno, Foucault and Derrida, but maybe not much else... well, maybe a little Marx.
Ken, what do you make of the fact that, supposedly, Lenore Skenazy penned this article? I can't, for the life of me, fathom that Lenore would look at this article and decide "Yeah, that positively advances the Free Range Kids/Let Grow movement."
I half expect an article from Stossel lamenting how cops should be forced to try again later when suspects say they're being racist.
I don't get it.
There are smart people who run things at Reason, and Skenazy is as smart as anybody needs to be. My guess is that they're handing out assignments, and they maybe they don't want people making recommendations. They just want clicks--and they want them from people who are outraged by this, no matter whether they're libertarians or otherwise.
The other possibility is that the chattering classes are all obsessed with the same stories at the same time, and when you see that outrage porn sells, you try to give the people what they want.
That being said, Skenazy's writing is a highlight on this site, and she's usually great about making libertarian ideas explicit using things that happen in the news.
I have no problem bringing attention to these issues, but this article could have appeared on an anti-fa website or a commercial for Joe Biden. Why not use it to call for police accountability explicitly, to end Qualified Immunity, etc? In addition to being a call for all that, without a conclusion tacked on the end, it might as well be a call for us to join anti-fa in Portland and the defund the police.
When all you're doing is feeding the outrage, you're feeding all the causes that the outraged people are screaming for equally, and so many people right now are calling for solutions that are so unlibertarian. She should pick her own conclusion, or other people will pick their own.
Articles like this are also good to forward to your kids with the message "Don't resist the cops or bad things may happen. Be polite, take the ride, and we will let our lawyer take it from there."
This.
You can be right and the cop can be wrong, the place to sort that out is not on the side of the road with the cop. It never gets solved there and only bad things happen if you try.
Even if you're right and the cop sees it, all you did was avoid arrest. If you take the ride you might never have to work again in your life.
Skenazy is as smart as anybody needs to be
"I do think at a certain point you have enough brain cells." -- Barack Obama
Reason published a video a few weeks ago that featured privatized security. So there's one solution. They have also been covering the push to end qualified immunity, so there's another. There is also a lot of talk about scaling back the number of services cops provide (like responding to mental health crisies) so that they come into contact with the public less often. Reducing the enormous amount of laws is also in the agenda. Lots can be done, and Reason has pointed all of these out in one place or another. You just need to open your eyes
I'm fully aware that there are libertarian solutions to these problems. Just because libertarian solutions can be advocated in these stories doesn't mean any of them are being advocated in these stories.
Can you point to the solution being advocated in this story? I mean, not one you supply yourself--quote the author telling us what the problem is and how to fix it.
It's been that way with at least the last four or five incidents in a row--where they don't bother to mention any solutions. The point is that there are also unlibertarian solutions to these stories--and stories like this--without a conclusion added--are just as supportive of those unlibertarian "solutions" as they are to libertarian ones.
If this were a story about someone committing a crime with a gun, it could be used to argue that people should be free to arm themselves so they can protect themselves from violent criminals or it could be used to argue that guns should be banned so that violent criminals can't perpetrate crimes like that anymore. One of those solutions is libertarian, and one of them isn't. If neither solution is attached to the piece, the piece supports both solutions by stoking up outrage for the sake of outrage.
If they did four or five stories like that in a row, we might come to the conclusion that they're trying to stoke outrage for the sake of outrage--and they're leaving off the libertarian arguments at the end because they want to appeal to non-libertarians. Draw them in with outrage porn, and then maybe they'll get some libertarianism through a contact high.
P.S. The arson rate in Portland was up some 300% in June of 2020 vs. June of 201--because of outrageous stories like this. There are more than enough people out there doing outrage porn. People making libertarian arguments for how to address these problems would be constructive. And if libertarian publications can't be bothered to make those libertarian arguments, who will?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outrage_porn
No, I can't point to a solution found in this particular article. I understand what you're position is now, but I just don't see it as a big deal since Reason has actually put solutions forward elsewhere. I wouldn't place responsibility on Reason for violence in response to these events either. Reason has pointed out how counterproductive riots are, in other articles.
If I were to "blame" someone for "outrage porn," it would be social media, but I think it's much more complex than that.
These articles serve to show people who believe that police are mostly reserved and act responsibly that it isn't necessarily the case. These same people also act as a barrier to reform. Articles like these serve to point out problems to those who are unaware.
Anyways, I disagree with your assessment that Reason neglected their moral duty to propose solutions and dissuade the public from becoming violent.
mental heath crisis' are usually punctuated by a kitchen knife.
First, this woman wasn't having a mental health crisis. Take cops off the mental health crisis beat and it doesn't change what happened above one iota.
Second, there are a large number of local establishments across the US that maintain their own private security. Get into a fight in anyone of them, resist removal, call them racists, and then tell them you hope their kids burn in hell. What do you think the odds are that you'd get treatment that was just as, if not more brutal than the above? Do you think those odds get better or worse if the private security becomes responsible for escorting you to the edge of town rather than the door?
My cousin was private security for a bar in Buffalo. It was a single floor establishment, and yet a lot of people managed to "fall down the stairs" before being turned over to the police.
It was either that or they "slipped on some ice". In August.
Since they can't be bothered to even pretend to cover the facts of this situation, I'm going to assume outrage porn.
Would you buy furniture at a store called Unpainted Huffine's?
So she was already detained, handcuffed, and in the back seat. What exactly was the justification to pull her out and hogtie her? Because she was trying to open a locked door with her hands behind her?
true
The video clearly says that police should have to behave like a human.
I'm sorry. I can't watch that without laughing. Bitch got what she deserved.
I think a certain segment of society has learned some key words to get their case dismissed and a possible settlement whenever they get busted.
I think that guy who grabbed the cops taser and subsequently got killed is one of these wise guys.
Don’t get me wrong, fuck the police. But it seems criminals that are black are milking police bad behavior for all it’s worth - even when it’s not that bad.
I'm not a guy so I don't know their brains work but I'm wondering if maybe there is some kind of sexual gratification in hog tying a woman. Discuss.
I'm a guy and I don't know how women's brains work. I absolutely know that they'll lie and feign weakness or injury to get men fired or worse just to suit their own ends. I know the problem gets worse as more and more leftist women are added to the mix.
