The trouble with anointing Twitter and Facebook as gatekeepers of coronavirus truth. This is not a post about the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data on COVID-19 being wrong. It is a post about the possibility that the CDC could be wrong—as any government agency or respected private authority might be—about some aspects of the coronavirus, and about how we address government-sponsored misinformation on social media.

In the past few years, a lot of Americans have decided that it's the responsibility of popular tech platforms and apps to police the truth for their users. In a fog of notions about Russia and right-wing trolls, many left-leaning lawmakers, pundits, and politically active social media users demanded that Facebook, Twitter, and their ilk "fact-check" certain types of information, prioritize content from selected media and government sources, and downplay or entirely suppress content that counters experts' claims.

In the run-up to the 2020 election and especially since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, these sorts of pushes have only intensified. Many people are sure that the way to correct the record and stave off mass hysteria is for tech platforms to play ultimate arbiters of truth, deciding not which version of things is correct but which version can even be discussed.

The impulse is understandable. The sharing of insane conspiracy theories and bad data on social platforms is cross-partisan, is often apolitical, and effectively knows no bounds. But censoring bad ideas and "fake news" has never made them less credible to their believers, and can make them even more popular. Besides, not all unpopular or wild ideas are untrue, and not all government data or recommendations are right.

We needn't even look back to previous crises to confirm this. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, government health authorities recommended against people wearing masks.

President Donald Trump has made a slew of questionable coronavirus claims throughout the pandemic, with many Democrats advocating for Twitter and other platforms to affix fact checks to the president's posts or delete them entirely. Meanwhile, these same factions have pushed for tech companies to prioritize data and recommendations from officials Trump appoints and agencies his administration oversees. It's bizarre.

This week, two respected public health experts—Harold Varmus, former director of the National Institutes of Health, and Rajiv Shah, president of the Rockefeller Foundation—wrote in The New York Times that CDC guidelines on testing asymptomatic people exposed to the coronavirus are wrong and should be ignored.

Earlier this week, CDC information on COVID-19 deaths was widely misinterpreted—including by Trump—to mean that the agency was overcounting coronavirus deaths by about 94 percent.

All of this highlights how precarious our grasp on good information is—and how it can only be bettered by allowing open debate, instead of deferring to experts and demanding that tech algorithms do too.

QUICK HITS

• The White House is preparing some sort of pandemic-related moratorium on evictions:

NEWS: WH to use quarantine authority to keep renters in homes during the pandemic to prevent an eviction crisis that could worsen economic strains

CDC will temporarily halt evictions of those earning less than $100k/year to prevent virus spread@JenniferJJacobs + @justinsink

"Those seeking eviction relief will still be required to pay as much rent as they can afford," said Bloomberg reporter Saleha Mohsin on Twitter. "The move could impact 'close to' 40 million renters, Mnuchin said earlier today."

• In Massachusetts, U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, "the most powerful Democrat whom progressives challenged this year," looks to be safe (he was facing a challenge from a much younger and more left-leaning Democratic candidate). And, as of this morning, Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III is losing in his bid to take Sen. Edward J. Markey's Senate seat. "Kennedy may become the first member of his storied family to lose a race in Massachusetts," the Times points out.

• "August 2020 saw more gun sales than any other August on record as Americans continue to rush to gun stores at a record pace," according to a Washington Free Beacon analysis of FBI data.

• In response to Australian government regulations, Facebook is "threatening to stop allowing Australians to share news articles on its platforms, including on Instagram."

• There aren't enough eyeroll emojis in the world for this:

— Washington Examiner (@dcexaminer) September 2, 2020

• Dan Drezner maps out "the multiple tribes who think the [2020 presidential] race is narrowing, why they think that and how seriously to take their arguments."

• No, the idea that politicians are being controlled by a shadow government didn't start with QAnon:

I've seen reporters attribute pre-Q conspiracy theories to QAnon, but this odd article goes further. It calls QAnon the "root" of the idea that "people that you haven't heard of" control prominent politicians—one of the oldest conspiratorial ideas around. https://t.co/T0HyTXa8Oj

• Los Angeles is really going through with disconnecting people's utilities if they violate social distancing orders:

Today I authorized the City to disconnect utility service at a residence in the Cahuenga Pass to stop the large parties being held there in violation of public health orders. Parties can spread the coronavirus, and hosting or attending one can put lives at risk.

• Yale Law School successfully sued to allow the publication of an unredacted version of former FBI counterterrorism agent Ali Soufan's 2011 memoir about terrorism and torture.

• R.I.P. Scooby-Doo creator Joe Ruby.

• Reason picked up some new Los Angeles Press Club awards!

Super proud of the whole @reason crew: Check out the thread to see their many @LAPressClub victories and my defeat at the hands of my nemesis Kareem Abdul-Jabbar once again. Well played, @kaj33. Well played. https://t.co/VOAe8SFM0i

      Hello.

"...government health authorities recommended against people wearing masks."

      And they were right.

"....Rajiv Shah, president of the Rockefeller Foundation—wrote in The New York Times that CDC guidelines on testing asymptomatic people exposed to the coronavirus are wrong and should be ignored."

Amazing eh? I think there's definitely invested interest in keeping this hysteria going. No piece of good news will be tolerated.

The 'official' narrative is to be afraid. DESPITE the virus simply not cooperating with this stance. We all see it. Plenty of top virologists and doctors oppose this stance. There isn't disagreement among them. So do pray tell how the heck can retards in social media begin to tell the difference? They sure as hell ain't reading the literature.

The problem, also, is assholes like that guy at Johns Hopkins preaching calamity get amplified and become the message to the masses. HE’S the one spreading mass hysteria but is not censored.

Meanwhile, for every jerk off like this, there seems to be more experts who disagree but they don’t have the megaphone and you have to seek them out. But their message is not getting out to the masses.

Me? I think this pandemic is over. We have 200 cases in Canada yet our head doctor continues to say idiotic things like 'no normal until vaccine'. She should be tossed on her incompetent ass.

The masks and social distancing are pseudo-science at this point. Know why? THE VIRUS IS ALREADY OUT THERE. The game is over.

Either we can continue to engage in voodoo theatre fooling ourselves we can 'win' at great social costs or we move on like REAL men and women and move on with our lives.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

        president of the Rockefeller Foundation

        There's your problem.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

Test the shit out of everyone for a virus with a 99.85% survival rate.

I went off on a doctor friend the other day. For months I had to listen to him talk like a little bitch terrified of this virus. That only a vaccine will save us. That it should be mandatory. That he was about to die if his wife (another doctor) would be positive after both got tested. On and on and on....for months.

At first it was a mild push back along the lines of 'the probabilities were in your favour of not getting it and still in your favour of dealing with it.'

Scared bitches don't like that kind of talk.

All you need to know are two things about the mindset. Yes, he has said these:

          1) All deaths are Trump's fault

          2) It's perfectly reasonable to lockdown life for old people.

This set me off. I told you're still peddling this emotional bull shit?

How about we just isolate them and move on? This notion of healthy people have to stop living because granny can get it is LUDICROUS and unfair. You want to stunt the emotional and intellectual growth of young people for a demographic we can easily isolate? This zero-sum attitude is RETARDED and ANTI-SCIENCE.

His rebuttal was still more telling about how this hysteria works: So you want your mother to be tubed up?

I told hm a) he's made of weak mettle and 2) my mother is none of his fucken business. In my family we don't roll like he does.

          1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

You really need to start distancing yourself from this dope. Guys like him are going to be the first ones to sell you out for not following whatever arbitrary panic-reg of the moment has been passed.

He's already indicated that he expects you to wear yourself out trying to make a living around these ever-changing regulations. Someone like that has shown that he isn't really a friend anymore.

            1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

I have distanced myself. But I can't stop him from messaging.

For every ten dumbass comment, I now just give a fluff response.

But the other day he made my blood boil with my mother bit.

The arrogance. He once told me moral judgments are bad. Well, what the fuck does he think he's doing here? When I mentioned this he said 'it's fact' (old people get sick). His sophistry takes up too much of my time to respond and even then you can't pin him down.

What do you tell someone after you in detail explain the Governors and CDC have more power than the Executive. That it's a FEDERAL system whereby restricting Trump's ability to impose anything really unless he declares a martial law emergency. And that in the CDC's own protocols it makes it CLEAR Governors are to run the show.

Yet, two second later 'Yeh well, still Trump's fault'. They're unhinged, petulant children.

              1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

I have distanced myself. But I can’t stop him from messaging.

Just stop responding to him. Completely.

Seriously. Even if he sends a message down the line asking why you're not responding to him, don't tell him why unless he comes and asks you to your face about it. Eventually, he'll get the hint that you're not interested in indulging his tantrums and bad-faith arguments and he'll leave you alone.

Hahahaha. Perfect example of how you guys insulate yourselves from reality. An actual medical doctor telling you things about the virus that challenges your daily dose of PJmedia, and your response is to cut him out of your life. Stay ignorant!

              1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

Reality = Trying to explain something to someone who won't listen, apparently.

          2. JesseAz   5 years ago

Average American thinks 30 million people have died.

            1. De Oppresso Liber   5 years ago

185,000 deaths so far. We are isolated from the rest of the world. Just how Russia and China want us.

The virus has not disappeared, like magic. Remind me who told us that one?

              1. JesseAz   5 years ago

Nobody dummy. Sorry you live in a wod of straw where you've created men. Most here said bad flu. Which is much closer to your predicted 2 million. And even closer when you eliminate the 6k deaths from physical injuries like car crashes, the 15k sepsis, etc

          3. ElvisIsReal   5 years ago

My friend who got it and recovered with no issues is STILL scared to death to go out and live his life, because he might get it again.

So he's going to wait for a vaccine. For something he already beat without issue.

            1. Mickey Rat   5 years ago

If he has already had it, a vaccine also will not do him much good.

      2. Roberta   5 years ago

This is the frustrating thing. There are still people out there who say this thing can be beaten by lockdowns, testing, and tracing, because it's worked elsewhere and elsewhen. Sure, against diseases that were much less prevalent and more consistently severe. These people write like they have no idea of the numbers, and no idea how stringent and widespread the isolation of the positives would need to be.

        1. Zeb   5 years ago

Yeah, it's been obvious since probably late March that containment isn't going to happen. Except for providing data for an after the fact analysis of this pandemic, testing and contact tracing are useless.

Even places that thought they had it contained like Korea are having outbreaks now. Everyone is going to have theirs sooner or later. A place like New Zealand could conceivably keep it contained if they seal their borders forever. But that doesn't seem like a very viable option. This is all just tyranny for its own sake at this point.

The CDC made the announcement, but I’m not sure it is technically true the CDC, per se, is implementing the moratorium. The 1944 Public Health Service Acts gives the Federal government quarantine powers. It’s a bit of a stretch to use it to do an eviction moratorium.

The most divisive shit I have ever heard coming from a president's mouth, besides previous comments by traitorous don.

      1. John   5 years ago

Biden isn't attempting to bring the country together. He is just lying. He claims to be against riots but then won't name the people doing the rioting. He claims to be against riots but never says a god damned word about his own staffers who donated to bail rioters out and his own VP who promoted the same cause. He says he is against riots but won't criticize or name the Democratic mayors and governors who have allowed them to occur.

Biden didn't do a damn thing but tell the country and the victims of the riots to go fuck themselves. And the reason why he didn't go to Wisconsin is because the people there would have expected him to actually criticize Antifa and BLM for destroying their town. And he wasn't going to do that.

Biden spent three months saying nothing about the riots and watching his VP nominee and most of his staff cheer them on. Then when the polls turned against him he tries to claim he is "against riots" but can't seem to remember who is doing it or who to criticize for rioting. That is not bringing the country together. That is pissing on the country's leg and telling them it is raining.

"The White House is preparing some sort of pandemic-related moratorium on evictions:"

This is a complete nut punch from the Trump Administration. Trump is in real estate- he knows how this screws up landlords. And yet he is doing it in a shameless display of pandering. It is complete BS.

I got out of the landlord business years ago, but I still have friends and family who saved and pinched pennies for years to get these investments. And Trump's pandering here threatens to destroy them. They were already working with their tenants to defer or reduce rent- but now these tenants have NO reason to negotiate. Obviously they are going to take "Live here 4 months rent free" over "Pay you rent for a little while".

On top of that, if the CDC can override state law, and regulate pre-existing contracts between private parties, all in the name of "Public Health" then there is not a single aspect of our lives beyond the reach of the government. This is Obama/Roberts Penaltax bad.

    1. JesseAz   5 years ago

Agree. This is a terrible move by the executive likely done solely to stop media attacks.

      1. JesseAz   5 years ago

And yes it would be just as bad if it was done by Congress as previously done and found in both the senate and house bills.

        1. Overt   5 years ago

At the least in the case of the congress, they had to pass legislation. I certainly think it would be unconstitutional legislation if tested. But they at least deliberated and passed a law.

Trump has crossed a Rubicon here. Consider that if the CDC really does have the authority to do this, what else do they have the authority to do in the name of Public Health? Remember that they have found guns and drinking to be threats to public health.

          1. John   5 years ago

There is no defending this. It is absurd. I don't see how the CDC has this power. Worse, it is not just Trump crossing the rubicon. Every state sans South Dakota crossed the same rubicon with the lockdown. We somehow went from the state having the power to quarantine those known to be sick to the state being able to restrict any right up to and including the right to leave your home of the entire population without any regard to who is and is not actually sick.

They used public health laws to turn the country into a police state. It is so bad that I think most people, myself included, find it hard to fully comprehend. But this is what happened. And Trump to his discredit has been a part of that. I don't know what we are going to do to fix it. It would be great if the Democrats were not a thousand times worse and we could kick Trump out of office for this. But the Democrats are worse and the worse sins have been committed by governors of both parties not Trump.

            1. Overt   5 years ago

I agree with you that the Democrats have a lot to answer for. But I feel this is more than just lockdown powers. Between this and the $600 payouts, we are really getting into the Bread and Circuses phase of this republic.

That may or may not help Trump here. But ultimately it will lead to a race to the bottom. Democrats will always be willing to give more free lunch than the GOP, and if they perceive that it is helping Trump, they will take it to its destructive conclusion.

              1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

Hell, we don't even have the Circuses part of this anymore--all the sporting events are attended by cardboard cutouts and Zoom participants, and now that they've all gone Full Woke, the public can't even use them as a distraction like what the Romans did with their events.

It is cute you think only populists will act against principle.

                1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

I didn't say that only populists act against principle. That's obviously false.

I did say that this guy is unprincipled (mostly true, though at least the guy loves this country), and that he's a populist (also true). Such people go where the wind blows, and right now the voters are blowing that they don't want to pay their mortgages or rent.

You know and I know that, in as much as there is an answer to this, it lies with Trump having Fauci et al shot, and telling the nation to get back to work. Let the states deal with foreclosures and evictions the way they want to, and let them reap the benefits or suffer the consequences.

Most lenders/landlords and homeowners/renters will want a workout of some form. Still better than a federal land grab for absolute power.

    2. Earth Skeptic   5 years ago

Maybe Trump expects to lose in November, and he is planning a new nation-wide rental property venture. He's just creating a buyer's market.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

If landlords can't pay their mortgages on these properties, it's eventually going to be utter fucking chaos in the real estate market. If they have no legal recourse to compel their tenants to abide by the terms of their contract, then what's the point? Better to let the property go into receivership, turn it over to the bank, say "good luck getting those deadbeats to pay you anything," and walk away.

This was an utterly stupid, short-sighted move by Trump because, even if he wins the election, it's going to come back and bite him in the ass HARD next year.

    3. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   5 years ago

Pay what you can? Who says something that utterly stupid without getting fired?

Government interference in private contracts is unconstitutional and ironic, if it is coming from a real estate mogul. The saddest thing is that is doesn't fix anything. The people who can't pay rent won't magically get the money and the debt does not disappear.

This is the tip of a true economic disaster. The only answer is to force every state to open up NOW. Even if it would kill all old people (which it won't), it would be better than the alternative.

      1. Red Rocks White Privilege   5 years ago

The eviction moratoriums never should have been implemented to begin with. As DoL pointed out below, unless you hit both sides of the ledger, you're just cutting off your nose to spite your face.

It's too bad the "housing is a human right" folks were allowed to set the terms of the debate here. Good luck getting those tenants to do competent maintenance on the building and pay property taxes after the landlord has fucked off.

    4. De Oppresso Liber   5 years ago

If they are going to halt evictions then they need to halt mortgage payments too. Assuming the landlord can bear the cost of a mortgage while the government deems your tenant to be your new ward is completely wrong and illogical.

Which Confederate military unit did Ben Franklin lead?

DC committee recommends changes to Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, other historical assets
      https://www.foxnews.com/politics/dc-committee-recommends-removing-names-of-founding-fathers-from-of-buildings-and-monuments

Among the historical figures named on the list are former presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor and Woodrow Wilson. The list also includes Founding Fathers Benjamin Franklin and George Mason, inventor Alexander Graham Bell and composer of the national anthem Francis Scott Key.

Jefferson Field, named for Thomas Jefferson, is among assets the committee recommends “using existing District government processes” to rename. So is Franklin School, named for Benjamin Franklin.

It recommends the Federal government “remove, relocate, or contextualize” several very famous tourist attractions, including the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial and the Benjamin Franklin Statue.

Some were baffled over the report. “Hey D.C.—they’re not your monuments to rename or remove,” tweeted Arkansas GOP Sen. Tom Cotton. “They’re America’s monuments.”

“I'm not even sure what relocating the Washington Monument would entail,” tweeted White House aide Alyssa Farah.

So one of the resident leftists, Chipper Morning Wood, was on the Stossel thread yesterday saying that only racists have a problem with Jo Jorgenson supporting BLM. So, maybe someone could explain to me how demanding a Jewish founded school denounce "wealth hoarding, Zionism, and parasites" fits in with libertarian values. Inquiring minds would like to know.

BLM is one example of how, by degrees, far-out "left" ideas are becoming normalized. You start with a slogan or an organization name, get the assent of all right-thinking people for its initial statements, and then "how can you oppose" it as it ramps things up with more and more outrageousness?

Of course although the "left" are past masters of this, it works for anyone in any sphere, producing cults like that of Manson, Jim Jones, and Synanon. You start out agitating against cruelty to animals, and you wind up with strict vegetarianism. You start with psychologic self-help and wind up with Scientology.

The convention’s GOP-laden lineup is just one example of what’s been a larger ongoing effort for the past four years to provide that rehabilitation to Bush and his cronies—an endeavor that comes despite the fact that Democratic Party orthodoxy just over a decade ago held that his administration was both a threat to the country and represented a force in U.S. politics that needed to be annihilated. But these once doctrinal beliefs have been thrown over in favor of a new interpretation of reality that relies on a premise that’s been repeatedly promoted by the Democratic Party and its mouthpieces at media outlets like MSNBC for the past five years: that Bush, and other GOP leaders before him, were fundamentally decent people with compelling, though ideologically wrong, ideas about what’s best for the nation—and that Trump is somehow different from them in his core beliefs and behavior.

The CDC 6 per cent figure is being misinterpreted by both sides. What you can take away from it is that if one does not have a comorbidity then the possibility of dying is very low. Age, interestingly, is not a comorbidity. So, if you are not obese, diabetic, have COPD, heart issues, very high blood pressure, or cancer - the chemotherapy wipes out the immune response - then you are unlikely to die from Covid-19. If you are under 65 years of age and free from these issues, then your risk approaches zero.
In the face of this, a targeted shut-down would work as well at protecting from death, and not impact the economy nearly as much.
Of course, according to the nightly news, we're all GONNA DIE!

The good news, sort of, is that the vaccine will be given to those groups first - the ones who actually need protection - and the rest of us can ignore it. It likely won't even be a thing the following year, as there will be some new version of the clown panic by then to freak out about anyway.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

Know what? I really needed that. We were losing John.

I want to believe we'll come out of the fog of fear.

    5. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

      Exactly this.

I'm floored and stunned by how easily people bought into this crap about masks. The body of evidence is staggeringly against usage. For decades they studied it to know if it could be use in community settings for the flu. And every time they could not justify it.

All of a sudden in 2020 a flurry of studies come in and claim otherwise. Now go read those studies (even the ones Bailey looks to). Look at the studies linked by the CDC. They're FAR from being conclusive. They DO NOT justify mass mandates.

We overturned every established science by buying into TWO lies motivated by panic. Lockdowns and masks. Now they scream no normalcy until there's a vaccine.

I resent being compelled into accepting this mass hysteria.

      1. JesseAz   5 years ago

And Twitter and YouTube will ban even doctors for going against the narrative.

Some are even Nobel prize winners.

      2. John   5 years ago

Even a vaccine will not bring them to their senses. They never want it to be normal again. They are too addicted to the virtue signaling and public officials are too addicted to the power the lockdowns have given them.

I am getting very pessimistic about all of this. I want to believe that it will end and people will come to their senses. All things must and do pass. But it sure doesn't look like it right now.

        1. JesseAz   5 years ago

they aren't even hiding this fact. Many many stories about how they can convert this into forever policy so as to stop climate change.

        2. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

It feels that way. In fact, they're prepared to double down. People are just too scared. This is what the government has done.

Tam said 'even if there's a vaccine. Mask up'.

We're going to have to fight to get our lives back.

          But it won't happen.

Too many people are 'I just want to work' and 'don't want to think about it' or whatever while accepting following signs and wearing masks. It's utterly DEPRESSING. I fear these people think it will lapse soon but officials aren't interested in a return to normal any time soon. The virus will to cooperate in a way to the point they can't deny it poses no danger to us. Heck, it's not posing a danger now.

They're not grasping the severity of it. And when they will, it may be too late.

It's NOW they have to push back.

          1. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   5 years ago

      3. Echo Chamber   5 years ago

Fauci, Birx, and CDC say over and over again that masks do not protect you from catching the virus. The mask just provides partial protection to other people from not catching your virus. Yet people still act like the mask is protecting them. Sad

    6. Muzzled Woodchipper   5 years ago

      Yes. Exactly.

Funny how every study done BEFORE it was politically and socially necessary to show masks are effective at stopping spread said just the opposite. But around April 2020 it all changed, and decades worth if studies were suddenly proven wrong.

    1. John   5 years ago

If the rule was no more than 10 years older than the victim and the victim was over the age of say 13 at the time, I wouldn't have a problem with that law. As it is, offender registries are a complete vindictive waste of time. So, I really can't hammer California too much about this.

Apparently it was already California law that this 10 year rule applied to minors over 15 or something engaging in vaginal sex but not anal sex, and the new law extends that to anal sex to be more fair for gay people. So good clickbait, but not really a problem in itself. It's just that during a massive, lethal pandemic, the biggest economic crisis of the century, a huge wild fire, power outages, water outages, nation-wide civil unrest, a massive budget shortfall with massive unfunded liabilities for union pensions on the horizon, a homeless crisis and the resulting sanitation crisis, and a mass exodus of the taxpaying class, this is what California Democrats decide to focus on.

I don't even know where to start with this. It's incredible.

Secondly Americans have not decided it's the responsibility of tech platforms to police their content the media, politicians and the tech platforms decided that after they had rose to such prominence their wasn't a danger of them losing customers to someone else and it became clear their preferred viewpoints and narratives were starting to be made fun of and hijacked by the right as the utter nonsense it was.

"White House advisor Dr. Birx worries rural Minnesota isn't taking COVID-19 seriously enough"
    By FOX 9 Staff
Published 2 days ago Coronavirus in Minnesota FOX 9

“Throughout Minnesota, between rural gas stations and urban areas, there is real attention to these efforts in the urban areas, but there needs to be improvement out in the rural areas,” explained Dr. Birx.

Since July, she says they’ve seen a consistent and significant number of infections in the Twin Cities and surrounding counties, a trend she called worrisome.

"Unlike the sophisticated urbanites, those hayseeds aren't following our Magical Medical Mandates! We're also seeing persistent trends in infections in the urban areas that's worrisome!"

With Birx saying the next four to six weeks will be critical in containing this virus.

"We have power against this virus but it requires all of us to exert our power," said Birx.

"4-6 Weeks"--this song was somewhat fresh when it hit the Top 10 in April. By now it's been overplayed and people have moved on to new, more interesting tunes.

    1. John   5 years ago

The closest city to me is about 350k. Certainly not NYC, but not Anytown, USA either. The only places I see anyone wearing masks are in establishments that essentially don’t want their businesses closed down, with a few places that are true believers (like my kids’ school, unfortunately, where Covid induced madness has full control). It’s a Deep Red State with a Blue Governor who will certainly only see 1 term. Even those who ostensibly agreed with the mandates are starting to look at them suspiciously.

Fauci in particular has gone completely off the reservation. He got far too used to the MSM kissing his ass this spring, and now he thinks everything he spouts needs to be treated like wisdom from a hermited mountain sage.

At least the sage is isolating himself and can't influence governments to coerce everyone else into wearing a Magical Mask Talisman.

I am amazed by the Democrats who I know who in one moment will be talking about what a rock star hero Fauci is and about how Trump murdered 150,000 Americans with COVID in the next. Fauci works for Trump and is in charge of the federal response for COVID. It never seems to occur to them that the two positions are mutually exclusive. They literally just emote whatever the talking point of the moment is with no regard to logic or forethought.

In all honesty, the intent and outcome of this is to discriminate against people of Asian ancestry.

      1. Ken Shultz   5 years ago

P.S. One solution here is to privatize UC Berkeley.

They supposedly keep the tuition at Berkeley artificially low with government subsidies, but if they're saying that this isn't enough to make a quality education at UC Berkeley accessible for the disadvantaged, then why are the taxpayers in California subsidizing a failed experiment that still discriminates against the underprivileged despite taxpayer support?

      2. John   5 years ago

Yes. Yet, like Jews, Asians continue to vote Democrat even though the party supports and enforces state sponsored systematic racism against them. Voting is revealed preference. I would think that a party openly supporting discrimination against you and your children because of their ethnic background would be a reason not to vote for that party regardless of their other positions. Asians for the most part disagree. They seem to think other things are more important. Given that fact, it is hard for me being neither Asian nor a Democrat to get very upset about this.

        1. Commenter_XY   5 years ago

This Jew (me) will never, ever vote Team D.

        2. Ken Shultz   5 years ago

Different groups have gone different ways at different times.

My understanding is that Japanese immigrants to the U.S. used to be more rural and into farming than other Asian groups, and that they trended more Republican since FDR and internment. I don't know if that's still true. It wouldn't surprise me if Marcos and Duterte supporting Filipinos, who have immigrated to the U.S. from wealthier families in the Philippines, trend more Republican, too. It's sort of like Cuban emigrants to the U.S. in Florida, who for their own reasons don't feel the same way about the Republican party as Latinos from Mexico and Central America.

Asians tend to get caught up in the immigration issue. The things the right tends to say about immigration seem like they're directed at Asian-Americans, even when people on the right aren't thinking about Asian immigrants at all when they're talking about immigration.

Meritocracy is a big deal on the right--the idea that hard work and smarts should be rewarded--and there's a big opportunity here to make common cause with Asian-Americans on the issue of affirmative action. But the right needs to learn how to talk about these issues differently. They can't be defensive about the impact on African-Americans. They need to proactive on opportunities for Asian-Americans who have earned a seat at the table after being unjustly denied it by the left simply because of their race.

        3. Ken Shultz   5 years ago

"Yes. Yet, like Jews, Asians continue to vote Democrat even though the party supports and enforces state sponsored systematic racism against them."

I suspect that has deep historical roots.

Historically, in eastern Europe, they had a word for what happens when the central government gets small or withdraws its supervision of local government. It was called a "pogrom", and it was that way for hundreds of years.

Cultural differences are about the ways people fill in the blanks. We know what's in our hearts, and it isn't antisemitism. They don't know what's in our hearts, but throughout history, when they've feared the worst and filled in the blanks accordingly, they've rarely been wrong and they've often been right.

        4. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

They've been here long enough to have longstanding representation from Asian politicians, and nearly all of those guys are Ds. You know the value of seniority in your representation.

If those pols convert to R, they'll likely drag their constituents along. I don't think it happens until then. Despite the screwing the Asian ancestry American population is getting from the Democratic Party.

      3. Sevo   5 years ago

In re-reading (what's reported of) that ruling, I'm guessing this:
"prohibit campuses from allowing prospective students to submit their scores"

You're telling me that, by law, I'm prohibited from telling you something?

    3. Fat Mike's Drug Habit   5 years ago

This is what happens when you give participation trophies to an entire generation.

Before that idea came along, we just accepted that people who practiced at something would be better at it than those who didn't and they should be rewarded for their effort. Now we've trained an entire generation that just showing up is good enough, no need to actually put any effort in. So they show up at the admissions office and it seems terribly unfair to them that the kids who actually studied are getting ahead.

I hope the response from industry is to just treat California-based degrees as worthless.

"In the past few years, a lot of Americans have decided that it's the responsibility of popular tech platforms and apps to police the truth for their users.

The left wants to use government oversight and social media to suppress the views of those who disagree with them.

They want to use the government to force nuns to finance the fornication of their employees.

They want to use the government to force us to buy health insurance against our will.

The left wants the government to implement Biden's Green New Deal, which would force every power company in the United States to eliminate all emissions by 2035.

The left wants the president to force every state in the country to shutdown their economy using the same standards as New York.

The left refuses to differentiate between protesters and rioters.

I'm telling you: let student loans become dischargable in bankruptcy, and this problem nearly solved itself. Tuition rates will drop, a gazillion students will vote for whoever gave them this goodie, toxic debt will get unwound, the higher education Marxist factory will be mortally wounded.

Lots of good follow-on effects. Even better if the universities are included in any clawback provision, which would admittedly require some restructuring of bankruptcy law.

      1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

And after I wrote that, take a look at what the 10th Circuit just cooked up: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/colorado-couple-sees-200000-in-student-debt-discharged-by-judge-131501065.html

Money quote from the ruling, which will no doubt be cabined into something that won't apply to anyone else, but still:

But the loan servicer [Navient] argued that the debt was not dischargeable, citing nuances of bankruptcy code, and moved the court to dismiss the McDaniels’ complaint. The motion was denied, and Navient appealed.

“This case raises a question of first impression in this circuit: does an educational loan constitute ‘an obligation to repay funds received as an educational benefit,’” the Tenth Circuit wrote in the August 31, 2020, ruling on the appeal. “We conclude that it does not. Exercising jurisdiction under 28 U.S.C. § 158(d)(2)(A), we affirm the bankruptcy court’s interlocutory order denying Navient’s motion and remand the case for further proceedings.”

Judges are starting to wonder why intrinsically, student loan debt gets preferential treatment versus almost any other debt owed by a debtor.

        1. John   5 years ago

It is absurd and unjust. I can become a crack addict or addicted to gambling and run up $300,000 in credit card debt supporting my habit and walk away from every penny of it in bankruptcy. If I have student loans, however, I can get sick or laid off from my job or suffer any number or misfortunes none of which are my fault and the bankruptcy court will tell me "fuck you pay them". That is complete bullshit.

I understand that these loans should not be immediately dischargable. But after so many years and if the court finds the person made a good faith effort to pay them back, they absolutely should be dischargable. There is nothing special about these loans other than they were made to pay politically connected people. They shouldn't be treated any differently than any other loan after so many years.

          1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

"I can become a crack addict or addicted to gambling and run up $300,000 in credit card debt supporting my habit and walk away from every penny of it in bankruptcy."

Maybe, maybe not. C. 7 is supposed to be a bitch to get on the consumer side, ever since, ironically, Joe Biden's 2004 bill restructuring the Bankruptcy Code. They're likely going to have to pay something. Maybe things have softened in the practice over the intervening sixteen years? Letting people be eligible for partial repayment under C. 13 is infinitely better than nothing.

As you wrote, the special treatment of student loan debt, and then the federalization of it, was a love letter to politically connected lenders who could dump money into the market with both fists, and still clear 3-6 percent, practically risk free.

I just like the tertiary effects of allowing discharge, mainly the absolute bloodletting it would lead to in higher education. Within three to five years, the overwhelming majority of grievance studies departments would be a faint memory. Still need to find some means of replacing the BA degree as a certificate of employability, but baby steps.

            1. perlchpr   5 years ago

Yeah, if the debt was dischargable, they'd look a lot more carefully at what it was getting spent on. $200k for "fries with that?" wouldn't be the game of the day any more.

        2. BYODB   5 years ago

Judges are starting to wonder why intrinsically, student loan debt gets preferential treatment versus almost any other debt owed by a debtor.

Why would they wonder this, when it's patently obvious that one of the reasons why is because you can't repossess an education like you can a car or a house or any item that actually exists here in reality versus an entirely notional thing.

You mean I can get free money and just go bankrupt at 22 while getting an ivy league education? No downsides! Well, except when no one pays no service gets offered anyway.

          1. BYODB   5 years ago

And yes, I realize that idiot 18 year olds being given massive amounts of 'free money' is a retarded way of doing things. Making student loans discharged in regular old bankruptcy is probably even more retarded, though, if you're leaving the deck of cards in place.

            1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

Show me what you can repossess with unsecured debt. You can take my credit card back, I guess.

Repossession is a creditor remedy applicable for a few important classes of secured debt, but by no means does secured debt encompass even most consumer debt in this country.

The fact is that bankruptcy sucks to go through, sucks to have on one's record, and most people, even those apocryphal doctors and lawyers who were declaring bankruptcy upon graduation, weren't defaulting on their loans when either times were good or the amounts were comparatively small. Even the lawyers who might've thought about it, also had a Bar Association to consider, or the members of whatever form they were anticipating joining, to turn around and blithely try to C. 7 their way out of their loans.

              1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

Caught the last bit of your comment. Yes, the deck would have to be reshuffled. Get the fed out of backing the loans, allow the lender, fed, and educational institution to get in a 3-way cage match to determine who pays what, and let the market adjust the way it's adjusted through other periods of written down, unwound debt.

I imagine one of the adjustments would be massive, wholesale firings throughout many university and college departments. The Marxist indoctrination would be on hold. It would probably induce a lot of kids to do something else besides going to college.

                1. BYODB   5 years ago

In a sane world, the amount of lenders that give huge piles of unsecured cash to 18 year olds without any skin in the game would probably approach zero. If they got their education, what exactly are you going to do to them as 'punishment' for not paying you back? Ruining their credit at 22 is basically a laughable punishment, especially if everyone does it.

And right now today there are tons of people who are already defaulting, so I don't see how making that easier on them will be a punishment.

Since the deck of cards won't be reshuffled, it seems a moot point.

It would be one thing if he were Patrick Mahomes and still looking at the best years of his career in front of him. Then you could understand him doing or saying whatever it takes because he loves the game and wants to have a career and not be black balled. But, at his age, fuck them. Walk away from the game with your integrity. He is not winning another Super Bowl. He is still very good but he isn't going to do anything this year or the next that will improve his legacy. He sold his soul for money he will never spend and a couple of years on the end of a career that will add nothing to his legacy. Sad.

      1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

100% agreed. The day he was bullied by those jerk offs he should have packed it in.

        1. Fat Mike's Drug Habit   5 years ago

Eh, that still hands them a victory.

He should've said "Oh we're doing politics now?" and pasted a MAGA and pro-life sticker on his helmet. What are they gonna do, bench him?

          1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

Fine him---which he could easily pay---and bar him from the field.

A downside is I can easily see his own team letting him get hurt bad in a situation like that.

I'd have retired. Like Brees needs the money.

            1. Fat Mike's Drug Habit   5 years ago

Oh man, the shitstorm that would happen if they banned him for a MAGA sticker would be epic.

              1. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

Agreed, but I think Goodell is easily stupid enough to do it, don't you?

                1. Fat Mike's Drug Habit   5 years ago

He is a doofus, but he's also beholden to team ownership. I think they realize how financially disastrous that decision would be and would rein him in.

                2. Nardz   5 years ago

It's hilarious, and troubling, how Goodell is jumping on the BLM bandwagon now as it's clearly careened off the track already.

      2. Idle Hands   5 years ago

none of these guy's can retire they have to be basically be put down. See Brady, Tom or Farve, Brett or Manning, Peyton.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   5 years ago

          Manning's last season was BRUTAL.

Denver's defense was so incredible when they won, it was able to mask (pun intended) Manning's significant drop in play.

"How Are Social Media Companies Supposed To Handle Government-Sponsored Misinformation?"

The same way the media does. If it's from Democrats, print it verbatim. If it's from Republicans, pick it apart and take quotes out of context, or don't quote at all, and spin what was actually said.

    1. damikesc   5 years ago

You forgot that, if from Republicans, they should find Dems to comment on it.

  53. Commenter_XY   5 years ago

You know what else is bizarre, Elizabeth Nolan Brown? How the hell do you write for Reason when your thinking and writing qualifies you to write for Pravda. Give us a fucking break.

    1. John   5 years ago

She acts like it was Trump and the right who was demanding these platforms censor stuff. Pravda would have thought she was too obvious.

  55. Rossami   5 years ago

The answer to the headline's question is easy. Stop trying to be the gatekeeper. There's lots of misinformation out there and social media companies are no better suited to filter it than anyone else. Give it up as a lost cause and trust readers to do their own evaluations.

And if you really think that Americans are too stupid to evaluate information on their own, maybe you should put resources to fixing the root cause - the public education system.

    1. Ron   5 years ago

If people are too stupid to evaluate information then aren't they also too stupid to vote. I know some people have said that anyone who votes for trump is to stupid for their votes to be counted

"President Donald Trump has made a slew of questionable coronavirus claims throughout the pandemic"

    And when you ask people like ENB (and Tony, and Jeff) what, specifically, were the questionable claims, they'll either;
    1. outright lie like they did about chloroquine and "Trump told people to drink bleach".
    or,
    2. create a big pile of innuendo and assumption and implication based on literal readings of common colloquialisms ("FALSE: Pie isn't easy!") and lawyering the definitions of words.

Either way the B team is constantly trying to gaslight us here, and it's disgusting.

    CDC will temporarily halt evictions

    Huh? WTF? How?

    1. John   5 years ago

The authority listed in the EO is Section 351 of the Public Health Service Act which is codified at 42 USC section 264. It says

(a)Promulgation and enforcement by Surgeon General
The Surgeon General, with the approval of the Secretary, is authorized to make and enforce such regulations as in his judgment are necessary to prevent the introduction, transmission, or spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the States or possessions, or from one State or possession into any other State or possession. For purposes of carrying out and enforcing such regulations, the Surgeon General may provide for such inspection, fumigation, disinfection, sanitation, pest extermination, destruction of animals or articles found to be so infected or contaminated as to be sources of dangerous infection to human beings, and other measures, as in his judgment may be necessary.

(b)Apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals
Regulations prescribed under this section shall not provide for the apprehension, detention, or conditional release of individuals except for the purpose of preventing the introduction, transmission, or spread of such communicable diseases as may be specified from time to time in Executive orders of the President upon the recommendation of the Secretary, in consultation with the Surgeon General,[1].

(c)Application of regulations to persons entering from foreign countries
Except as provided in subsection (d), regulations prescribed under this section, insofar as they provide for the apprehension, detention, examination, or conditional release of individuals, shall be applicable only to individuals coming into a State or possession from a foreign country or a possession.

(d)Apprehension and examination of persons reasonably believed to be infected
(1)Regulations prescribed under this section may provide for the apprehension and examination of any individual reasonably believed to be infected with a communicable disease in a qualifying stage and (A) to be moving or about to move from a State to another State; or (B) to be a probable source of infection to individuals who, while infected with such disease in a qualifying stage, will be moving from a State to another State. Such regulations may provide that if upon examination any such individual is found to be infected, he may be detained for such time and in such manner as may be reasonably necessary. For purposes of this subsection, the term “State” includes, in addition to the several States, only the District of Columbia.
(2)For purposes of this subsection, the term “qualifying stage”, with respect to a communicable disease, means that such disease—
(A)is in a communicable stage; or
(B)is in a precommunicable stage, if the disease would be likely to cause a public health emergency if transmitted to other individuals.
      (e)Preemption
Nothing in this section or section 266 of this title, or the regulations promulgated under such sections, may be construed as superseding any provision under State law (including regulations and including provisions established by political subdivisions of States), except to the extent that such a provision conflicts with an exercise of Federal authority under this section or section 266 of this title.

You tell me where the power to do this is in that statute because I don't see it. Maybe Congress changed it in the big porkulus COVID relief bill. But I am fucking dumbfounded how they are doing this. It is absurd.

    2. The White Knight   5 years ago

I think it’s a misstatement that the CDC is enforcing this. They just announced it.

It does seem like a big stretch.

      1. John   5 years ago

This is true. The CDC doesn't enforce anything. Local courts will have to enforce it by refusing to issue eviction orders. If I were a judge, I would ignore this and grant any otherwise valid order. If a judge does that, the person being evicted has no recourse beyond the courts. It is not like the CDC can send the cops to stop it.

        1. damikesc   5 years ago

This is a fucking absurd idea and, honestly, landlords are getting fucked eight ways from Sunday with this. I'd become a bnb location only and fuck long-term renters.

          1. The White Knight   5 years ago

Rent control and eviction moritoriums sound great in sound bites, but are not so great if you acknowledge owners as people who have to pay their bills, too. Aside from that, the details are legally messy.

          2. Chuck P. (The Artist formerly known as CTSP)   5 years ago

How can anyone do anything but 100% for term of lease up front? Or does this moratorium include expired leases as well, because that would be fucking evil.

Nevermind, the first part is fucking evil, so go for it.

        2. The White Knight   5 years ago

From the articles I’ve read, it also sounds like there is language in the executive order about having to pay as much of one’s rent as one can. Paying as much as you can is a fuzzy standard. I wonder how that would be determined, who the burden of proof would be on, etc.

        3. Gray_Jay   5 years ago

In your opinion, would a federal district judge entertain an injunction motion against a landlord in this situation? I mean normally landlord-tenant stuff, where it doesn't implicate things like the ADA or Civil Rights Act, is as state court an issue as can be, but is the intention here to create a federal cause of action?

          1. Fat Mike's Drug Habit   5 years ago

Any judge worthy of judgeship, from traffic court to the Supreme, would understand that a random bureaucracy doesn't have the authority to insert itself in contracts between private individuals. Particularly contracts that were already in place before the bureaucrat got a bug up their ass about something.

Government sponsored misinformation is simply propaganda.

It is used to get the masses to accept bullshit and act in a way they wouldn’t if they knew the truth.

It assumes the authority of truth to coerce people.

It is the source of all evil.

Civilization only overcomes it by recognizing its wrong and managing it, like all wrongdoing, with laws.

Criminalize all lying and civilization wins.
