Tulane Canceled a Talk by the Author of an Acclaimed Anti-Racism Book After Students Said the Event Was 'Violent'
In Life of a Klansman, Edward Ball reckons with a white supremacist ancestor. Try explaining that to the students.

Life of a Klansman: A Family History of White Supremacy is the latest book by Edward Ball, whose award-winning 1998 book Slaves in the Family traces the histories of people enslaved by Ball's own ancestors. In Klansman, Ball tells the story of a racist great-grandfather who joined the Ku Klux Klan.
The New York Times hailed it as "a haunting tapestry of interwoven stories that inform us not just about our past but about the resentment-bred demons that are all too present in our society today," and the anti-racism scholar Ibram X. Kendi participated in a virtual discussion about it with Ball. Tulane University was slated to host another such event, featuring Ball and Lydia Pelot-Hobbs, an assistant professor of geography and African American studies.
That event was supposed to take place tonight, but the university opted to postpone it following blinkered outrage from students who insisted that the event was "not only inappropriate but violent towards the experience of Black people in the Tulane community and our country." Other members of the Tulane community called it "harmful and offensive," and demanded its cancellation. Still others said the university should apologize and take action against whoever approved the event. (I verified that the people who made these kinds of comments were Tulane students, graduates, and employees. I chose not to name most of them in order to prevent individual harassment, though I did identify two student government officials who affixed their names to an appalling demand for censorship.)
The feedback was so unhinged that a casual observer might wonder whether they mistakenly thought the book was written by a Klansman, or endorsed the Klan. The comments on the event's announcement page—as well as statements by student government officials—make it abundantly clear this is not the case. They know exactly what the book's point of view is.
"The last thing we need to do is allow someone who is even reflecting on the hatred of their ancestors to speak about white supremacy, even if their efforts come from a place of accountability," one student wrote on Instagram.
"There is nothing that a book on white supremacy written by the descendant of a Klansman can do to promote or influence an anti-racism atmosphere," wrote another.
But this wasn't just random students leaving comments; Tulane's student government weighed in as well. In a letter to the administration "on behalf of the entire student body," Undergraduate Student Government Vice President Ingeborg Hyde and Liberal Arts Student Government President Amanda Krantz demanded the event's cancellation. And they did not mince words.
"An apology is the first step in undoing the harm you have caused many members of the community, but is in no way the last," they wrote. "In the current political atmosphere, it is imperative that we are all actively anti-racist, and endorsing speakers like these is antithetical to the anti-racist work being done by students, faculty, and staff on our campus."
Again, this is a book that NPR called "resonant and important." The New Republic—currently one of the woke-est of the progressive magazines—wrote that Ball "builds a psychological portrait of white supremacy, which then radiates outward and across time, to explain the motives and historical background behind racist violence." Yet leaders of Tulane's student body think it is their solemn duty to prevent anyone from learning about this history.
In the face of such apoplexy, Tulane agreed to postpone the event. It has not yet been rescheduled, and given that the students are still furious, it's unclear whether it will be. Tulane did not respond to a request for comment, nor did Ball or Pelot-Hobbs.
One Tulane graduate commented on the Instagram post about the event's postponement that he was disappointed with this decision. An associate director in Tulane's admissions office responded: "Go cry about it."
This controversy has unfolded at a time of increasing public focus on racism; In July, Tulane University's Black Student Union released a list of poorly-thought-out demands that included the enactment of a zero-tolerance policy for offensive language, as well as reparations for students who suffered emotional trauma.
It would be one thing if the students were merely demanding additional speakers of color, but their comments make clear that they do not believe someone like Ball should speak under any circumstances—and that they consider the very suggestion that he be allowed to speak (in a virtual space) an act of violence against marginalized students. They are possessed of a smug certainty that he has nothing of value to say to anyone at Tulane. This view is ridiculous and should be anathema at a university.

White fragility you said?
In this case, yes. It is most likely rich white Tulane students and faculty who are shrieking the loudest. They tend to be the ones made fragile by the wokeness disease.
And when you think about it, that is straight up racism. Rather than confront and discuss America's past, they seek to just erase it. That is just white washing with a really stupid rationalization.
The Klan must be fucking laughing and high fiving themselves right now.
All two dozen of them.
It's not every day 24 assholes get a whole demographic to go full retard.
I make up to $90 an hour on-line from my home. My story is that I give up operating at walmart to paintings on-line and with a bit strive I with out problem supply in spherical $40h to $86h… someone turned into top to me by way of manner of sharing this hyperlink with me, so now i’m hoping i ought to help a person else accessible through sharing this hyperlink.
===============► Cash Mony System
9, two died of old age last year.
Actually the official KKK membership rolls count about three dozen members, but they include all the alphabet-agency infiltrators who are setting the real racists up for stings.
That sounds like a Klansman coverup, because they have more than two dozen in Fairmount, GA alone, where they were meeting in the town square within the last ten or so years.
What about the Klan's secret banana republic base ?
Fairmount, GA only has about two dozen residents living there. What may be a concern is there are 130 Ku Klux Klan groups and 193 Black Separatist groups active nationwide. Unlike the KKK the black separatist groups have ambushed and murdered police and also random white people just because they were white. The NFAC is part of the black separatist groups and far out numbers any KKK groups ever seen. They are also marching heavily armed.
If the New Republic's assessment of the book is accurate and it "builds a psychological portrait of white supremacy" I suspect many of the white wokeocracy find it less of a portrait and more of a mirror
I imagine that is true. I saw somewhere where the woman who wrote "White Fragility" objects to saying Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. According to her, the correct way to phrase it is that Jackie Robinson was the first black player allowed to play in the major leagues. Saying it that way totally deprives Robinson of his humanity and moral agency. It says that everything he did was not the result of his ability and character but the result of whites allowing him to do it.
How is that not racist? It just blows my mind what these people are saying.
But he wasn't. He rebooked the color barrier 50 years after the Progressives instituted it
There wasn't a color barrier before Progressives created it. So, he broke it. The black players before the barrier didn't break a barrier. They just played.
And Robinson was a great person. He was chosen to be the one to re-integrate baseball because he was both an excellent player and had the right personality to put up with the abuse he was bound to receive with dignity and grace without getting publicly angry. To say he was simply "allowed" to play insults him and the people who were working to integrate baseball.
Yes it does. It is the kind of thing that a racist would say. Yet, today people who claim to be "anti racists" say it without irony. We live in very strange times.
Progressives don't do individuals. Everything is systemic and cultural and every member of each group is the same. One of the primary sins of "White privilege" DiAngelo lists is "individualism."
Which really offends me as Jackie Robinson is one of this country's greatest historical people all because of who HE was as a person and what HE did.
Rather than confront and discuss America’s past, they seek to just erase it.
Yep, it's straight up "Year Zero" shit.
Censoring an author of a certain book, simply because it's written by somebody who's ancestor(s) were members of the Ku Klux Klan sounds like an act of censorship, to me. People need to be aware of the worst parts of the United States' history and past, regardless of how bad or good it was. That's just as bad as the people who go around tearing down statutes of slave-owners or whoever.
Too afraid and sheltered to learn. Ignorance forever.
The students are retarded. There is really no reasoning with them. Our education system has produced a generation of violent, mentally defective, ignorant fanatics.
Based on my experience at a university known for its PC culture, the wokest students are the ones who can afford to waste their time protesting and majoring in things like women’s studies and American Civilization, they don’t need to worry about getting a good job to pay off their loans because their parents/trust fund foot the bill. For them, college is a 4 year stay a day care (or a loony bin) where their temper tantrums are rewarded.
Yes. And now they are going out in the real world and cosplaying terrorist as a part of Antifa. Some of them are starting to find out that the federal criminal justice system doesn't reward or care about temper tantrums.
There are multiple people who are exactly as you describe facing federal charges with long minimum mandatory sentences right now for doing shit like throwing fire bombs at cop cars or trying to tear down federal monuments. How stupid and spoiled do you have to be to think you can get away with fire bombing a cop car or tearing down the Jackson statue in front of the White House? They seem to have the maturity and impulse control of a neglected toddler.
The sound track to these events are priceless, when the cops have finally had enough and start arresting them all you hear are “Why are you doing this” etc. sounds like my 7-year-old when she loses her ipad for talking back. Same exact whine in their voices.
Antifa is slightly overgrown Hitler youth, basically--white, privileged, wearing masks and beating up people. And stupid enough to fall in line with a cause that celebrates self-righteous certitude about being the moral judges of everyone else.
The defense of Antifa is always: "How can they be bad when they say they are anti-fascist?"
These are not the brightest bulbs in the bunch.
It's not a far stone's throw from thinking you're the one to judge others (because your view is the "right" one) to thinking you should take executions into your own hands.
There may be a "my family can afford lawyers" element. I once knew a college student from a wealthy family who for reasons unknown to me tried to smuggle several hundred tabs of acid across the Canadian border (into Canada from the US.) He was caught. However, his family not only could afford many lawyers, I think several actually were lawyers, and absolutely nothing happened to him. That stunned me. Wake-up call in several directions.
the wokest students are the ones who can afford to waste their time protesting
There's a deeper cause. People majoring in engineering, science, and business have career paths based on subject matter knowledge. But soft majors (especially grievance studies) do not since their subjects are largely useless. So they need to compete on a different basis.
Consider where are these people going to be applying for jobs. Not to business or they would have chosen productive majors, and in fact their choice of useless majors is likely driven by anti-business animus in the first place. This group will instead apply to academia, government, and the NGO system where political loyalty is the highest priority in hiring. This is because (1) the top institutional goals are political, (2) these institutions believe everyone is interchangeable, and (3) this last can be believed because these institutions require no little skill or knowledge.
The smarter ones understand their career is based on political reliability. So they spend their 4 years on campus demonstrating it as a kind of extended job interview.
What kind of "work" do such people do? Could they just as well be no-show jobs because nothing actually gets done except mutual admiration? Like their resumes get built by association with each other?
What kind of “work” do such people do?
Why do you think the DOE issued its Dear Colleague letter on Title IX? Sure they want to be the sex police. But the true advantage is creating jobs for the 100,000 most rabidly left Womens Studies graduates. The diversity racket works the same way.
Of course there are only so many of these jobs which is a problem considering how many people graduate with useless majors. That's why every campus outrage event generates a list of demands always including additional grievance studies faculty and diversity positions.
Some teach a couple of classes at community college, write for Jezebel, and bartend to pay the rent.
Or every bill congress passes includes money to promote "community awareness". NGOs (Acorn's Children) use these slush funds to hire, the jobs as described are usually to sign people up for benefits. The real job is to participate in protest theater - like those surrounding the Kavanaugh hearings.
Success is getting your name attached to something that allows you to solicit funding for your own public policy NGO - which is essentially a shell company to pay you. Consider how Anita Sarkeesian inserted herself into Gamergate to make the conflict about herself (she was not part of the initial conflict and had no relationship to anyone who was). She used that prominence to speak at several conferences which led to getting herself appointed to the Twitter Safety Council. That position helps her solicit funds from government and charity foundations to give training sessions about online sexism.
It's a tough hustle as you'd expect of jobs which create no value. That's why left wingers believe life is unfair and therefore government should take money from those that are productive to support them.
I am vaguely left wondering how people that stupid even got into college.
Rote memorization of information will get you a long way in High School and many college majors. In the real world, Critical Thinking Skills are what get you payed.
See, I was thinking maybe it was an artifact of "No Child Left Behind", since they all appear to very much be children.
With no critical thinking skills and no desire to seek out as much information as they can find in order to form an opinion of their own.
The large majority of people still go to college to party for a few years and get the piece of paper they need to start their career. The type of degenerates that gravitate towards school government are the same as always, their antics are just amplified by social media. For reference, the movie PCU came out *26 years* ago
I imagine that this book is a self-flagellating waste of time, so it's not like students actually need to hear this speaker, or are shutting themselves off to a different viewpoint. It's still just reflective of the overall attitude that people shouldn't be allowed to ever say anything slightly controversial on campus.
"Our education system has produced a generation of violent, mentally defective, ignorant fanatics."
You give them too much credit.
These are indeed really stupid, intolerant, hate-filled, irrational, and anger-driven people.
It is absolutely "original sin" at this point. Your very existence as a descendant of someone--whose history you are trying to highlight as bad--marks you as an evil person who should not be heard.
It's true that history repeats itself... and partly because of idiots like these. We will see attempts at physical purges at some point in the future.
I would say this stuff is being pushed by faculty and administration. When this crap started there was a big name (who I can't remember the name of) in academia stating that, yes safe spaces are needed by today's students. Utter hogwash, but the students are responding to the prodding and doing what they can get away with. Private colleges can do what they want. Public college admins should be getting there asses kicked by Governors and state legislatures. But we all know shat cowards they are.
Top story at 10: Far leftists begin to eat their own, nation in disbelief.
Serious question for these people: How do you build a stable society in which the rules for what speech is ruinous to one's entire life and livelihood are unknowable and ever-changing?
They don't have an answer for that. And it would never occur to them to even ask the question. The left today is more destructive in the short term than it was in the past but I think it is less dangerous in the long term. The old left had a real plan and vision for what they wanted. That vision was insane but it was there. And it's existence and appeal made them very dangerous. The left today is just insane. It has no vision and no idea what it wants and doesn't even bother to ask itself the question. The struggle has become an end in itself. That means they are much more destructive in the short term than the old left. The old left sought to co-opt existing institution or replace them with something else if they destroyed them. The new left just seeks to destroy. That means if they ever get any kind of power, the result will just be chaos and failure, which is easier to undo than the institutions the old left would build.
They most definitely do have a plan-social justice, environmental justice, and economic equality can only be achieved under socialism, which is basically the new platform of the Democratic Party to unite the old left with the new left.
They have a plan, but the details of the plan are completely contradictory and would be impossible to actually enact. There is no internal logic to it. The whole thing is just "I Want">
That's exactly it. The socialists want to seize capital. The environmentalists want to destroy capital as part of destroying all production. But when they're trying to be both socialist and environmentalist, it's just...dumb.
I think you may be right. However I fear that what is really going on is that the political class is fostering unrest by allowing an army of confused, incoherent ideologue children to run through the streets causing just enough chaos to make the other 90% of Americans turn around and beg their wise masters for peace and stability. I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but manipulative statecraft consumes these people's every thought. You can't really put anything past them.
If that’s the case, they’re preaching to the choir.
The only places the useless idiots of the left are allowed to run loose are the big cities. Big cities in which they already have total control and have for decades. And to the extent that suburbanites and rural dwellers want the violence to stop, they’re not really in favor of a leftist government to do it.
The political class isn't as divided as they like you to think they are. On the Federal level, the policies always look disturbingly similar no matter who's in charge. I sincerely doubt that most elected officials truly believe in anything beyond whatever they need to believe to keep their prestigious job that gets them into the best parties and their names plastered on plaques outside of important looking buildings.
My overall point is that it's not about left wing or right wing, they'll both unapologetically continue to amass power, create new arbitrary & intrusive rules, bomb the shit out of third world countries and spend your money (or print new money, devaluing what you already have) frivolously. It's about manufacturing consent. All you well behaved citizens want these mobs to stop running wild and threatening your homes and businesses? Just kiss the ring and it will all go away.....for a price.
The billionaires behind Antifa and BLM are all too happy to use Blacks as cannon fodder in their plans to restore the feudal system of a small class of barons ruling over a mass of peasants, with a very small class of skilled persons to run things just under the barons.
As automation, robotics and Artificial Intelligence are reducing the barons’ need for peasants, the Blacks are at the head of the line for extermination. Read up on eugenicist Margaret Sanger’s attitude toward Blacks and peasants. Wonder why abortion clinics are located next to Black hoods? Go figure.
The question assumes that they want a stable society. What they want is to find ways to always be offended.
I mean, I'd be happy to provide that for them. I bet I could do a great job of offending these fucknuts.
Feature not a bug
How do you build a stable society in which the rules for what speech is ruinous to one’s entire life and livelihood are unknowable and ever-changing?
You don't. You create a society where everyone keeps their heads down and their mouths shut and hope the mob doesn't come for them. Of course it won't, just keeping your head down and mouth shut isn't good enough for these mental defectives. It's not enough to just be color blind or to judge others based on the content of their character, you have to be "anti-racist."
Should result in an extremely stable society, because you simply would never speak. Ask no questions, tell no lies.
Except for the problem that these people are still competitive, and the only way to get ahead is by knocking others down. So very unstable after all.
Never apologize. Especially to human crap like that.
"There is nothing that a book on white supremacy written by the descendant of a Klansman can do to promote or influence an anti-racism atmosphere,"
Exactly. I love it when the propagandists strip away pretense like this and admit that the anti-racist movement is not 'against racism'. They have matured beyond the promotion of tolerance. By integrating Marxist ideology into the civil rights movement, they have come to the inevitable conclusions that racism can only be inflicted by the majority on a minority and that the majority, and therefore all institutions created by popular will, are by their very nature racist.
Anti-racism is naked prejudice against the majority. This is why I will not be voting for JoJo. She doesn't believe this movement is evil.
Based on their statement, I'm guessing they believe in the Corruption of Blood.
It’s not about what they believe, it is more about power. When they get an event canceled they get a rush of adrenalin which leads to the desire for more and they have to search out and find it…even when it does not make sense. Same with these riots, it started with a few small protests that released the pent up pressure in their brains. But once that was over there are a certain part of the population that needs that rush and cannot find it anywhere else so it escalated. And just like any junky they are on a quest to experience that first high, that is why they keep going after the federal building in Portland. In their mind if they could set it on fire like other buildings is would capture that first rush and they are being denied and as any parent knows when you take away that toy from a child they want it more than ever and here come the tantrums. The truly frightening thing is if this cannot be tamped down soon then things could really spin out of control.
Sorry, got off on a tangent. The gist being if the colleges would just stand up to them after a few tantrums this would probably die down. But since they keep giving in to them, then they move onto the next target and so on. I had been under the impression that there was a shortages of slots for students at good schools so I don’t know why they don’t just tell them there’s the door, you won’t be missed. There are 20 other perspective students waiting to take your place.
> "The last thing we need to do is allow someone who is even reflecting on the hatred of their ancestors to speak about white supremacy, even if their efforts come from a place of accountability," one student wrote on Instagram.
So here's how I read this:
Black Leftist: "It's now our job to teach you about anti-racism!"
Black Leftist: "Oh, and we can't allow you to teach yourself about anti-racism either!"
Black Leftist: "The only thing you are allowed is to debase yourself and grovel for a mercy that will never come."
You forgot:
Black Leftist: "It's not my job to educate you about your racism."
This last one is the true jaws of the kafkatrap.
I'm taking Kafkatrap as a band name. None of you will receive credit or royalties from our first album "A Mercy That Will Never Come." Mwahahahaha
Pff. I didn't get credit for albums I actually worked on, so you're way behind. 😉
If you become a musician for money, credit, girls or drugs, you're going to be mostly very, very disappointed. Except for the drugs.
That's why kiss is the greatest band. They can't sell out, because all of their songs are about how the point of life is sex drugs money and music
These leftists aren't black.
Yes, but they could easily be made into honorary niggers, as per the shoeshine below.
I'd like the white to come back cracking a whip, thank hir for the lesson, and demand a shoe shine.
I've seen pretty much that exact script broadcast on social media, except never by anyone "of color".
It's almost always coming from white women who either grew up in a fairly affluent household, or haven't lived anywhere with a local population that's more than maybe 5% non-"white". Also, the ones I know might actually be part of the basis of the studies that are looking into how much narcissistic/Machiavellian/sociopathic traits are over-represented among the "woke" movement compared to the general population.
Ibram ten? Is that any relation to Malcom ten?
Speaking of Macolm Ten (X):
His words a few days before he was assasinated.
“The white liberals, who have been posing as our friends, have failed us. The white liberal is the worst enemy to America and the worst enemy to the black man.”
“White liberals are those who have perfected the art of selling themselves to the black man as our ‘friend’ to get our sympathy, our allegiance and our minds. The white liberal attempts to use us politically against white conservatives, so that anything the black man does is never for his own good, never for his advancement, never for his own progress, he’s only a pawn in the hands of the white liberal.”
“I only cite these things to show you that in America the history of white liberal has been nothing but a series of trickery designed to make us think that the white liberal was going to solve our problems. Our problems will never be solved by the white liberal. The only way that our problems will be solved is when the black man wakes up, cleans himself up, stands on his own two feet, stops begging the white liberal and takes immediate steps to do for ourselves the things that we have been waiting on the white liberal to do for us.”
“The media’s the most powerful entity on Earth. They have the power to make the innocent look guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the mind of the masses.”
“The Democrats are playing you for a political chump and if you vote for them, not only are you a chump, you are a traitor to your race.”
I was nodding right along pretty much had me up until "traitor to your race." It is impossible to use that phrase without sounding like you're about to start a fire on someone's lawn.
Malcolm's words, not mine. He wasn't exactly known for treading lightly.
Better than Joey B's 'if you aint voting for me, you aint black'
meanwhile, the latest from ANTIFA - Rape is Not a Crime - ANTIFA
coming soon - Decriminalize Rape - ANTIFA
You think you are kidding. You are not.
https://victorygirlsblog.com/rape-shouldnt-be-reported-police-keith-ellison/
Kieth Ellison "rape shouldn't be reported to the police". Remember in 2012 when the Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin said
"Akin, who has said he's Missouri's most conservative congressman, indicated there may be an exception to his stance against abortion. But, when asked if he supported abortions for women who have been raped, Akin said: 'It seems to me first of all from what I understand from doctors that's really rare.'
He also said he would prefer that punishment for rape be focused on the rapist and not 'attacking the child.'"
And it was given as proof that every Republican thought rape was okay? Here Ellison, a sitting state AG and former chair of the Democratic National Committee is saying that rape should effectively be legal. And the media isn't saying a word.
And for the record, Reason lost it's shit for weeks over the Akin comment. Yet, hasn't printed a word about Ellison. Reason is all "pox on both houses" neutral that way. Right?
Jesus Christ. That could be good advice in some cases. Coming from a friend or counselor. Rape can be hard to prove and going through a trial has got to suck for a victim. But it's a very serious crime and the AG certainly shouldn't be discouraging people from reporting it. It's his fucking job to lock up rapists.
And what difference does it make if the guy runs away? We live in the age of DNA testing. It is very hard to get away with a rape these days. The feds and I think most states DNA test all of their convicted inmates and keep it in a searchable database. If a woman is raped by a stranger who broke into her house and she calls the police soon after, they can do a rape kit and if he left any seaman behind and has a conviction, likely find the fucker that week.
Ellison is not only saying don't report rape, he is saying that the state really doesn't give a shit about solving crimes. And he is the chief law enforcement officer of the state of Minnesota.
and if he left any seaman behind
i hope the Navy would never tolerate that.
They would just send the marines in to get him.
I hear Tony usually leaves seamen behind after a rear assault. Although he would probably welcome being taken from all sides by invading marines.
Maybe it's easier than I think to prove rape these days. But DNA tests don't address the question of consent. I could be wrong, but I get the idea that that is usually where the defense usually focus in rape cases. And that's hard to prove beyond reasonable doubt if there aren't witnesses or physical evidence of violence (and even then, some people are into that sort of thing).
No they don't. But if the guy is a stranger, it is going to be very hard for him to convince the jury that the victim consented.
In the case that Ellison is talking about, the rapist runs away and presumably the victim doesn't know who they are. So, he is not talking about date rape. He is talking about a stranger raping a women. And in those cases consent is not going to be an issue.
Yeah, fair point. I didn't know there was a specific case being addressed.
But if the guy is a stranger, it is going to be very hard for him to convince the jury that the victim consented.
I found out the other week that my cousin has a ~28 year old son who is 6 months younger than his eldest daughter. My cousin found this out a few months ago. One night stand with a woman he met that same day. Not saying it's common, but it does happen.
It can happen but when a guy breaks into a woman's house and rapes her, consent is not usually an issue in the case.
"We live in the age of DNA testing. It is very hard to get away with a rape these days. The feds and I think most states DNA test all of their convicted inmates and keep it in a searchable database."
That doesn't help if they never process the rape kits.
We believe that every rape kit booked into evidence and connected to a reported sexual assault should be submitted to a crime lab for testing,
This is a nonsense complaint. In most rape complaints DNA is irrelevant because there is no doubt as to who the accused is. The issue of rape rests on consent, not identity, and thus DNA matching is irrelevant. As excerpted above this advocacy group includes all tests because without that volume included their alarmism is unwarranted.
Ellison is Islamic. They punish for rape only if there are two witnesses to the rape. This is a case of preferring sharia law over American statute and case law. Ellison's constituents, like white and black in the toxic South, do not understand that congressmen are not elected to impose law out of the assortment of Bronze Age books their lobbying religious organizations favor.
Those student comments don't make sense to me at all. What does that even mean? White people aren't allowed to speak about history or racism? They just have to sit there and be lectured about it , or what? I thought they wanted us to reflect on the undeniable historical wrongs, but I guess we aren't allowed to talk about those reflections.
They are funneling all responses down into the one acceptable action: kneel, grovel, self flagellate and do so using the approved words of the day. Anything else will be considered an offense in some way shape or form.
White people aren’t allowed to speak about history or racism? They just have to sit there and be lectured about it , or what?
Basically, yes, that's exactly what they're saying. "Shut up and listen while I tell you why you're an awful scumbag."
And that's totally what we need to heal society. More racism, but in the opposite direction. What could possibly go wrong.
Keep in mind that it doesn't matter that the person has never been actively racist in his life. The narrative is that they grew up in a country where slavery once existed and there's a history of racist policies. No matter what changes, it will always be true.
White Americans will always be racist no matter what happens and there's no end goal.
White people are apparently supposed to be "anti-racist".
The first definition of that which I saw was to be someone who opposes and confronts racism directly and affirmatively when it's encountered. Apparently that also has to be done in a way that doesn't make any reference to the existence of or otherwise acknowledge the presence of said racism.
Anyone know how to directly confront something wherever you see it without acknowledging that it's actually happened or draw any kind of attention to its existence?
The Tulane students already know everything, so keeping them further is a waste of everyone's time and money. They should be sent home with BA degrees in Wokeness.
Whenever I hear someone call for a national conversation on race, I know they mean "Shutup I'm goining to tell you what to think."
That event was supposed to take place tonight, but the university opted to postpone it following blinkered outrage from students who insisted that the event was "not only inappropriate but violent towards the experience of Black people in the Tulane community and our country."
And they knew this because they had all read the book, right?
Uhhh .... sure they did. Or maybe just the title. It had Klan in it so - offensive. We get all of our information from the headline. The little scribbles below are just long wordy things noone has the time to read.
Can't the speaker just tweet it to us?
violent towards the experience of Black people in the Tulane community and our country
Further evidence these people have never experienced any actual violence.
These bozos haven't even read their Marxist-Leninist textbooks:
• The Communist Manifesto, Marx & Engels
• The Little Red Book - Quotations From the Chairman
• Rules For Radicals, Saul Alinsky
The central theme of Marxism-Leninism is perpetual revolution. Constantly tearing down and building up, tearing that down and building up...ad infinitum. When this gets rolling, it becomes a continuous cycle.
But I thought “White silence is violence”?
So they’re yelling that whipeepo need to speak out against racism, because if you don’t that means you’re a white supremacist, yet when a white person does speak out against racism they’re shouted down and cancelled because their speech is literally violence.
Got it.
And they're in such a bubble that they don't realize how bad the pushback is going to be once people realize that they're in a "heads you win, tails I lose" situation.
I thought silence was complicity. It's anything other than silence that's apparently "violence" and therefore intolerable
You're trying to use logic, reasoning. You lose.
Did the United State try to reason with the Japanese Empire? Oh, for a while. Did it help? No, was taken as a sign of weakness. From the Japanese viewpoint, Japan was militarily weak in comparison to the United State. Negotiations were a tactic for stalling until Japan could strengthen their position. When they got to the “now or never” point, they struck.
Unfortunately for them, the US codebreakers were listening in on their communications and deciphered enough to make a good guess at what they were planning. So the aircraft carriers and their battle groups left Pearl Harbor and went out to an area where the Japanese Navy was utterly unlikely to go.
The Japanese shot their was and missed, damaging a few obsolete battleships, most of which were refloated and repaired.
It was all downhill for the Japanese after that.
Instead of further negotiations the US burned their cities down. When the Japanese appeared not to get the message, the US nuked a couple of cities. Too late for any further negotiations. They lost.
You really seemed to pick and choose which excerpts to use from the Tulane community to make these young people look as silly and overreactive as possible, and I don’t find that very productive. The truth is, y’all don’t know how to read a room. During a time of extreme racial violence against the Black community, we don’t need to hear and uplift the descendants of white supremacy and their violence against Black people. They already have a WELL established platform in our society. Black organizers and leaders NOW are finally gaining a voice, respect, and credibility in our society and THEIR voices and cause should be elevated in this conversation about race, reparations, and justice, not yours and Ball’s. All your ill-informed, tone deaf article does is erode that progress, belittle genuine efforts to combat racism in Tulane, and give a platform and affirmation to these mean spirited, problematic white people^.
During a time of extreme racial violence against the Black community,
Unless you are a time traveler writing from 1925, that statement is utter bullshit. There has never been a time in US history where there has been less racial violence against black people. What planet do you live on?
we don’t need to hear and uplift the descendants of white supremacy and their violence against Black people.
Why does being a descendant have anything to do with it? It doesn't unless you embrace some kind of generational sin. In this case a generational sin based on the color of a person's skin. I don't think anyone needs to hear from people like you who embrace such blatant racism. And understand that is all it is.
Moreover, everyone has their experience and a right to their view of their past and the nation's past. They have a right to be heard. If you are unable to hear them, that is your problem and something you really need to work on. Regardless, you do not have a right to prevent others who don't have such issues from engaging in debate and discourse that come with living in a civilized society.
They already have a WELL established platform in our society.
And what platform would that be? You just said above they have no right to a platform. So, what reason is there to think they have one at all and more importantly that you won't destroy those platforms if allowed to deny this one to them? The bottom line is that the existence of other platforms doesn't justify denying this one. This person speaking does not prevent others from speaking. It is not a zero sum game. You only pretend that the existence of other platforms somehow matters as a idiotic rationalization for your desire to censor those you don't like and avoid honest debate and open dialog.
Black organizers and leaders NOW are finally gaining a voice, respect, and credibility in our society and THEIR voices and cause should be elevated in this conversation about race, reparations, and justice, not yours and Ball’s.
Black people have had a voice and respect in this society for decades. For you to claim they haven't shows not only immense ignorance but also profound disrespect for the intellectual giants of the black community from Frederick Douglass to James Baldwin on through to today. Sorry but you are not engaged in some struggle for a platform. Your teachers lied to you. You are the great beneficiary of the struggle of those who came before you. Stop disrespecting their accomplishment and accept it that you are lucky to live today when you can benefit from their struggle.
Lastly, black people having a platform in now way should diminish anyone else, white, brown or whatever, from having their platform. This guy speaking doesn't diminish you ability to speak. Your claim that it does is nothing but a lie and a false rationalization for your own racism and desire to censor. Moreover, two can play at that game. If the principle is that free speech is some kind of limited commodity where one group's speech necessarily comes at the expense of another, I do not think you as a minority is going to like the result should such a principle ever be adopted. You may think you will be the one making the rules but you won't be.
Now come back later after you have learned to think more clearly.
Black organizers and leaders NOW are finally gaining a voice, respect, and credibility in our society
Nice marginalization of all the people who spent THE LAST 60 YEARS being respectfully listened to about serious minority issues. You have clearly abandoned MLK's core principles if you no longer think any white people found him credible. But, then again, he advocated forgiveness and wasn't a Marxist, so fuck him, right?
During a time of extreme racial violence against the Black community, we don’t need to hear and uplift the descendants of white supremacy and their violence against Black people.
That may be true, but I don't see much reason to believe that we are living in such a time.
And no, you definitely aren't liberal. You make that quite clear.
Unsure if this is spot on perfect parody of the exact kind of person that is ruining the discourse of the country...I hope its parody for your sake.
If it isnt parody, the dismantling John did was spot on. These people need to be set straight. Funny how its always the wokesters that are the first people to view somebody not as an individual but as a color and nothing more. Doesn't matter their history, their experience, or what they have to say if they dont have the correct set of skin tone / victim cards then they have to bow down. That def isn't racist.
I don't think it is a parody. And I assumed the person writing was black because they seemed to take ownership of the views of the black students in the article. But, that was probably an unwarranted assumption on my part. I think there is a 50/50 chance the person who wrote this is white. If they are, wow is that messed up.
"During a time of extreme racial violence against the Black community, we don’t need to hear and uplift the descendants of white supremacy and their violence against Black people."
Since this was a discourse between the author Ball and the professor of African American Studies at the University what would be a better time to hear about the past?
I thought students went to college to learn and think larger thoughts. I would think bringing two diverse views together, particularly in this chaotic time, would be that opportunity. Apparently we are in an indoctrination center for students and not halls of higher learning.
It wouldn't have been diverse views. Ball is already an "anti-racist". It would have just been two people ...
Oh yeah, this is lefties we're dealing with. Diversity means "we look different but think the same".
Agreed, but the racist is still in the room ala Ball's Grandaddy. Even though he would not be there to defend his side of the argument, Ball might be inclined to offer up some insight of the whole man, not just the man/racist.
Chopping off the head before it speaks doesn't even give the students the chance to hear anything new.
@I'm nit even liberal:
When I read these sorts of stories my immediate take is "I really do not understand" such persons. You've certainly helped explain that. Seems it is all about payback, now time for everyone of the wrong color to sit down, shut up, and pay up [you did mention reparations] for an indeterminate period of time, presumably unlimited.
Now I understand. You are a RACIST. You are no better than any other brand of hater, and of course you believe yourself to be justified, as they all do.
Sometimes it's good to reflect on whether the cancel culture approach is actually a good or politically productive idea. You have to win over Karens. That's your job.
The gays didn't win the right to marriage equality by shouting "we're queer suck my dick!" and whining about how unfair it all is at everyone. They did it by pretending to be wholesome people like Will & Grace and Ellen. You can't convert all the children until you've won over their parents.
So, first they tell us that all white people are racists and if you disagree that just proves you're a racist, and now they don't even want to even talk about race at all unless it's to spout their idiotic slogans? These people need to go fuck themselves with rusty chainsaws. I hope every single one of them gets Lou Gehrig's disease.
We don't need no white man's disease, we'll get our own disease, dammit!
"violent" is the next word on the pile.
The outrage against Edward Ball reminds me of this event. A janitor was accused of harassment for reading "Notre Dame vs. the Klan: How the Fighting Irish Defeated the Ku Klux Klan".
Help us Obi Wan Kenobi. You’re our only hope.
The author of this article should have published the names of the "blinkered" students and others who protested the dialog. Clearly, they could not get past the "trigger" words in the title. With names public, these fools could be shamed, their parents might even withdraw funding. Now Tulane has to absorb all the shame. And the university deserves a portion. If they weren't so tuition hungry, they would not have admitted half of these wailing idiots and would wash them out now, and if the schools had done the job of teaching critical thinking and civic norms, this would not have happened.
For all its reputation for rebellion, UC Berkeley hosted talks by William F Buckley, a hard conservative, and Harry Bridges, a flaming socialist, in the same year (1961, I think). There were no demonstrations or objections.
I don't know about this case, but it reminds me of the case at Indiana University where students were triggered by an exam question about a patient saying, "I can't breathe." They should absolutely publish the names of every student who complained about that, because otherwise no student in that class will ever be hired.
"Your request for a zero score on this exam has been granted."
This is error. The students, graduates, and employees who support this sort of Jacobin bullshit should be named and harassed. They should be subjected to exactly the same harassment that they're trying to subject others to.
These degenerates will only respond to pain.
Woke millennials might not be the real problem. The real problem may be the institutions that bow to the emotional whims of a few.
Go figure.
B-b-but. Cancel culture iS OVeRblOWN aCCoRdING TO StUDieS.
So...it's all about "blood" after all, huh? They think this guy's a charlatan of some sort because someone of his genetic or at least familial lineage can't be qualified to write on this subject, and could therefore transmit only mean feelings to others, so they have to protect themselves against that meanness...or even the mean feelings transmitted by those who thought he should speak. Heck, maybe he thinks he is specially qualified to write on this subject because of his family connections.
"My great-grandpappy was a racist, so I get to tell you other white people what racists you are!"
Apparently that's *still* not woke enough.
What happens if someone wants to come to campus and espouse the actual positions of the various Klans in history - like "vote Democratic," "give public schools a monopoly on education," and "exercise extra-judicial 'justice' against perceived moral offenders"?
Come to think of it, those things sound fairly woke from the standpoint of modern progressives.
You know, *my* great-grandpappy was a train robber - I mean, he was an entrepreneur who focused on the transportation industry.
His career came to a tragic close during a public event held in his honor, when the platform on which he was standing collapsed.
/old joke
There is an error in the following quote: "In the current political atmosphere, it is imperative that we are all actively anti-racist, and endorsing speakers like these is antithetical to the anti-racist work being done by students, faculty, and staff on our campus." It should have said: "In in the current political atmosphere, it is imperative that we are not only stunningly ignorant, but proudly and unapologetically so.
“One Tulane graduate commented on the Instagram post about the event's postponement that he was disappointed with this decision. An associate director in Tulane's admissions office responded: ‘Go cry about it.’”
Whoever that Tulane graduate is, he should print out that response and mail it back to Tulane the next time they solicit him for an alumni donation.
They went full retard.
This is what one current Trump supporter did at Tulane half a century ago:
https://64parishes.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/2866.jpg
You realize that any administrator telling the shrieking snowflakes to fuck off risks being lumped in with the neo-Nazis. The moderate approach doesn't get any air time. The Trumptards are just unhinged racists, but the wokeists are exercising the actual power of canceling whenever they can, and it's not just by actually canceling but by creating a culture of eggshells and fear.
The good news is that it's almost exclusively 18-22 year olds. Remember being that age? Remember how emotional you were about everything? Especially political causes. It was always life and death and all from inside the most cloistered, leisurely lifestyle these people will ever experience. They grow up eventually.
And college students being overemotional is not quite the threat to civilization that presidents being fucking insane is.
The thing about all the college deplatforming is that if these students are ever going to see actual differing views presented and learn to navigate it, presumably it should be before they graduate with BAs. Remember unfamiliar ideas, "having your ideas challenged?" The handful of people that got this started will be campus celebrities; disagreeing with the outcome, even among friends, will probably be shunned. What it shows them is that they were right to deny others the opportunity to explore something intellectually. For an event of people talking that would take up probably two and a half hours tops.
And they will absolutely take it with them into the workplace. Have you worked with any millennials recently, anyone born since 1995? The kids who were too young to remember life before the Patriot Act? The whole point of college wokeness is for it to become a life's work. I'll never forget the first time I heard someone explain that since they are white, they need to take x actions in society, they have a responsibility to "work for social justice," whatever that entails. It was a strict "if white then responsible to do x,y,z". That definition is guaranteed to evolve up over the next few years to include p,d and q, and I think people who have purchased the pilot model will generally subscribe and download the upgrades.
Somebody from a Klan family writing a tell-all is a courageous thing and probably valuable to other white people from old South families in terms of understanding their relationships to culture and power. Oh, I get it finally. Ball competes with DiAngelo and white fragility. He wasn't fragile, he did the deep dive and came up with integrity, therefore the "you're fragile" thing won't silence him. Pelot-Hobbs appears to be someone who is not Black based on her faculty page at Kentucky, but she seems to have some anti-racism workshop facilitation credentials. I couldn't find much on it but probably the combination of the two of them wouldn't be deferential enough for the cancelers. If white people start coming to terms with their history, supporting anti-racist policy and generally working for the good of society *without* taking a dose of fragility first, they won't be as useful for the other purposes of the cancelers. Now I'm curious to read the book.
My experience with SJWs in the arena enough to be canceling people is that they are acutely educated on the views of their opponents. It's all on YouTube, and all we millennials do is watch YouTube.
I wanted to call attention to the forces working against moderation. A suspicion that anyone using racist dog whistles has already gone full fascist excludes anyone who is sympathetic to the right only because they haven't figured out yet that it's all about its more extreme views stealthily evading detection. If you can't appeal to these people, you're not doing your job as a progressive evangelical.
The right recruits in a much different way. It starts out off-putting what with being anti-feminist goblins, but appeals to disaffected undersexed 20-somethings most especially when they are convinced that the screechers caught on camera are actually going to gain some kind of power over them.
Either way, canceling seems counterproductive. Debate the fascists and presumably without much effort expose the flaws of their argument. And welcome the moderates who don't know any better yet, while forgiving their infractions against PC strictures. Lightening up in general never hurts.

More proof that our educational system has failed in a gross way. If there is anything that needs to be added to the mandatory curriculum it is not anything political, it is courses in logic. (Assuming you could find teachers honest enough to actually teach it.). The list of things that need to be removed is too long to list in such limited space.
Nice Article indeed worth reading..

“Violence” without physical presence, let alone without physical contact? We already have robbery by Cultural Misappropriation - if the accused also owns a firearms I suppose that’s armed robbery...
Colleges and universities are worried that closing down for the fall semester will exacerbate already declining enrollment as students will undoubtedly rethink the decision to take on a lifetime of debt just for online courses without the "college experience". This has stoked fears that more young people may turn to trade schools or apprenticeships as alternatives forcing them to potentially endure productive and meaningful lives that contribute to society.

Good Lord. Have we raised a whole generation who won’t read or think, but just tweet?
You're not responsible for your ancestors.
You are responsible for the racist and authoritarian history of the organizations and movements you choose to join, like the Democratic party, the progressive movement, and BLM.

Robby:
Recently, it seems, you only need two sentences: an opening and summary.
Here "it" is:
"This view is ridiculous and should be anathema at a university."
Of course, you may have to change the last word, occasionally with -
news broadcast, school, political rally, stump speech, etc.
Thanks for this article. I read article as this here.
