The Media Wants To Guilt-Trip Parents Over School 'Pods'
Worried about how the latest COVID-19 workaround might exacerbate inequality? Maybe open the damned elementary schools instead.

Even before the recent unpleasantness, I have long read The New York Times, at least in part, as an exercise in making upper-middle-class liberals feel guilty about their consumer choices. Those convenient Amazon deliveries? Packaged by exploited laborers. Those cheap manicures? Given by nearly indentured immigrants. (Except not.)
So it does not surprise me that the Times is reacting to the latest creative workaround to dysfunctional governmental coronavirus response—parent-organized teaching pools, or "pods," whereby a small group of kids can receive instruction and supervision for the many days this fall that schools are not in session—with a triple helping of guilt.
"Given that pods can be pricey, complicated to organize and self-selecting," cautions the paper's Melinda Wenner Moyer in an explainer this week, "they are likely to be most popular among families of privilege, experts say, and may worsen educational inequality."
Yesterday, the Gray Lady rolled out a new education podcast with the sardonic title of "Nice White Parents," whose thesis is that, "If you want to understand what's wrong with our public education system, you have to look at what is arguably the most powerful force in our schools: White parents."
And on the Opinion page, educator Clara Totenberg Green makes it even more explicit: "At a time when the Black Lives Matter movement has prompted a national reckoning with white supremacy, white parents are again ignoring racial and class inequality when it comes to educating their children," she writes. "As a result, they are actively replicating the systems that many of them say they want to dismantle."
To those not fluent in contemporary education politics, such race-based insults may seem like an odd way to persuade stressed-out parents about the best personal and policy choices come this coronavirus-compromised fall. But progressive school activists and bureaucrats have grown so reliant on the R-word when pushing through controversial reforms that they keep reaching for the club even when they are as bewildered as pod parents are about what the hell to do with kids this September.
"Many will read this article and ask what they're supposed to do instead. I don't have the answer," Green confesses late in her piece. Still, the important thing is to feel bad: "They must understand that every choice they make in their child's education, even the seemingly benign, has the potential to perpetuate racial inequities rooted in white supremacy."
Moyer at least offers some tentative ideas about offsets. Parents could invite and subsidize underprivileged kids, though that, too, may "create friction." They could also hire a teacher/tutor "who is Black, Indigenous or a person of color (B.I.P.O.C.), and [ask] them to implement a social justice-themed curriculum." Whatever the offering (and cost thereof), it's important to not withhold any monies from your sub-functional local school.
"Parents starting pods should ask their school administrators how their departure will affect both short-term and long-term school funding, [sociologist Jessica] Calarco said, and ideally donate any lost funds to the school through the P.T.A. or a school foundation," Moyer wrote.
Well, that's one way of looking at it. Another one is maybe OPEN UP THE DAMN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ALREADY. At least in places, such as the northeast, where the virus is largely in check.
Only 16 children between the ages of 5 and 14 have died from the coronavirus in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; they were three times as likely since February to die from the flu, five times as likely to die of pneumonia.
Study after study has shown that kids 10 and under rarely contract, get sick from, or transmit COVID-19. One leading British epidemiologist told The Times of London this week that there is no known case in the world of a student transmitting the disease to a teacher. Given the hard lessons learned this spring—Zoom learning and cabin fever is no way to manage the time of elementary-age children—school districts in non–hot zones should be bending all their will toward preparing a full fall reopening for willing families.
But they aren't. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said this week that public schools will open around half-time this fall, and that he won't make a final decision until September. Despite some pretty vigorous pushback in—yes!—The New York Times, the failed presidential candidate has demonstrated more interest recently in quoting Karl Marx than solving the number one anxiety of hundreds of thousands of his constituents.
So maybe, given de Blasio's own predilections for using "racism" as a weapon in education-policy disputes, I should just give in to the guilt-trip, and suggest in my OUTSIDE VOICE that my family's tentative plan to organize a pod among our kindergartner's classmates is an atavistic yawp of maintaining white privilege or whatnot. Whatever works, right?
Well, no. At some point, we need to have adult conversations about education policy in New York and elsewhere that don't immediately default to the single most incendiary topic in American life. Parents are podding up not because they want to separate their children from people who don't look like them, but because the damn schools aren't open, and they would rather eat razor blades than experience another season like this spring.

Shame on you parents, trying to advance your kids education! We need to put your smart kid in with the stupid ones to help raise our standardized test scores!
Don't be so damn selfish, sacrifice your children to the "greater good"!!
If Trump could actually get them to say this, he could win back all the suburbs he lost in 2016 and 2018.

I have a two word answer for that, and it's not happy birthday.
Well, I kinda suggest those parents ask the school boards for the money they *shouldn't* be paying the teachers.
See the exchange downthread with lefty fucktard "teacher".
"...Maybe open the damned elementary schools instead."
Whadaya, some Trumpista, willing to let the sainted teachers maybe catch the flu?!
That’s white.
"... you have to look at what is arguably the most powerful force in our schools: White parents."..."
The NYT misspelled "Teachers' unions".
Yes, the idea that parents, white or nonwhite, are the most powerful force in the schools is absolutely counter to reality. Having a child in public school constitutes a frequent reminder of your own powerlessness, even in reasonably functioning schools.
Wife has a Vietnamese hair-doer; she voted for Trump, having experience with commies.
She turned on the TV the day after Trump's election to see her 4th-grade kid walking down the street waving a "RESIST!" flag.
NO children are to be out of the classroom without parental approval! NONE!
No one was punished or even given a wrist-slap.
That's bad but I guess not surprising. Kids should never be compelled to engage in political speech by their schools. Thanks for sharing it. People who grew up under communism or socialism and then left and made it to the US or were brought by their families have a lot to teach us. Knowing people whose families made it out of the former USSR and Cuba has been illuminating to me. We're not taught what "ideology" is here and large numbers of people don't perceive it when policy solutions are presented in terms of ideology. Having people around who can say "we've seen this before" matters.
Did she slap the stupid out of her kid?
Her kid didn't do anything other than what the 'authority' told him to do.
I hope she told the kid that the teacher ("authority") was to be treated with skepticism, but this is a mom trying to make a living in a new country and dealing with scumbag 'public servants' like "teacher", downthread
Did she slap the stupid out of the teacher is a better question.
5 years ago I sat in a veterinarian office waiting for my pup and next to me was a Chicago school teacher grading papers while she waited for Fluffy. She looked to have recently graduated and I noticed the work was mostly about the teachers union. The assignment was to write an essay about the importance of teachers unions. Art class is probably create a woke protest sign.
Tell parents that the fact their kid has missed nearly a year of school, and thus needs to repeat the grade, and you'll see how powerful the parents are and how quickly the school reopens.
You're assuming the school board will act in behalf of other than the teachers' union.
I do not share your confidence.
From what I've seen they very rarely have kids repeat grades anymore. There are multiple gradations of ways to make curriculum easier for kids with learning disabilities or various barriers to learning. The barriers are absolutely real. For whatever reason the system has taken the direction to keep the kids in their age groups and arrange as much "support" as possible. Unfortunately the support sometimes leads to kids getting so many hints they don't really learn to do it themselves.
There absolutely will be kids who fall behind vis a vis the "standards" due to the Covid closures. What will happen to those kids makes my head hurt. There are some "short-term interventions" but most curriculum is not at the individual level. You'd think that having twenty kids, with each one at a slightly different math level, people would have gone to literally individualized curriculum by now, kindof like Khan Academy, but no. If the interventions don't jell, the kids will join the thousands of others who don't completely understand the math but get hauled along by the sheer force of the system and the patience and good will of the special ed employees. Can the kids learn the material and catch up? Sure some could, but the schedule is not set up for that. Or they could just roll along at the level they understand and graduate a year behind in math; but that won't be allowed. No, this will hurt to watch. The schools won't encourage a kid to repeat a grade ever that I've seen. And this really is the piece that will break the worst, because many soft subjects are easier to catch up with, but math and science subjects tend to take the same amount of time and a child has to work much harder to "catch up." Parents need to start the math enrichment early and often now. I'm not sure it's bad that schools are staying closed *if they could make some curriculum changes* but most places are not doing this as far as I know.
"...There absolutely will be kids who fall behind vis a vis the “standards” due to the Covid closures..."
Oh, em, gee.
You are likely correct; the 'tee-ball' grades will soon reward a masters top those who at one time managed a high-school diploma!
Who gIves a shit what the NYT thinks about anything.

What!! How could they ? They’d have to think deeply rather than regurgitate the talking points. And they don’t understand that there is life outside of the city.
Welch finds libertarianism when his own ox is being gored.
We have to admit. Lawless psychopaths are cynically milking this Covid-19 thing.
Trudeau tried to expand the emergency act and was thankfully defeated. Ontario wasn't so lucky as Doug 'Friar Fathead Stupid Fuck Tyrant Tuck' Ford passed Bill 195 while Parliament wasn't in session. He now has unlimited power for 2 years. 'Trust us. We're the government'. While Quebec under Legault barely escaped his own attempt to basically bypass democracy so he can get shit down through Bill 61 last year.
Legault is all too ready to be a little petty tin pot dictator as well. Quebec is used to demagogues I'm afraid.
And we all know the story of the Governors.
May they all rot in hell.
How does a bill get passed without Parliament being in session? Especially one granting dictatorial powers?
Pods, home learning, whatever... the more I keep my kids away from those disciples of critical theory, the saner they become.
Having them home is work, but it is worth it
It's a shame you still pay the baby-sitters who now won't baby-sit for you.
What they're doing to kids is unconscionable.
Idiots claim to 'follow the science' but in two critical areas they're following orders. Kids aren't in danger of Covid as mentioned. The heads of Toronto and Montreal Children's as well as paediatricians said GO BACK AND NONE OF THIS SOCIAL DISTANCE CRAP.
Influenza is more dangerous for chldren. This is a political game as well as useless adults projecting their fears onto kids. The science says kids should go back to school. Full stop. They have no excuse.
Same with the mass mandatory mask hysteria. Science largely DOES NOT back it up.
These lazy, illiterate shit heads who can't be bothered to actually read the data are the same ones going around sciency-splainin' whatever they're masters told them about 'viral loads'.
My 'new normal' is that I'm retrenching and want nothing to do with these ignoramuses.
I truly loathe the maskers and anti-open schoolers. Truly despicable people.
They don't give a rat's ass about anyone. All this 'we do it for each other' nonsense is bull shit. Like Whitwhore cares about you. Please.
All this elevating masks as a virtue is cult-like.
"useless adults projecting their fears onto kids."
Yes. I tell my kids that it's adults who are fearful and they project that fear on the kids. They want to go to school but I'm keeping them home for now because of the ridiculousness of the masks and other stuff.
Schools that are opening are mostly teaching kids to fear life and not take risks.
Exactly! We are all in this together is a nice slogan for social media virtue signaling and graphic t-shirts. Just talk to these people for a few minutes and the truth comes out real quick. They could care less about anyone not a part of their family or social circle.
But what really grinds my gears are all the teachers who haven't missed a paycheck in several months, even though many provided just review assignments and did not teach new material through remote programs in the spring. They really believe that they should still be paid in full despite not providing the services for which they are paid. No one is saying they are willing to give up their paychecks because they are too scared to work. The taxpayers should still be on the hook for salaries and full benefits while our children continue to fall behind.
And the parents are just as bad, if not worse. I'm really amused by the people who obviously don't understand the science and statistics, which clearly show their fears are disproportionate to the actual risk, especially as the death rate is steadily declining in most places. People guided by fear over facts, who clearly don't grasp basic math and science, are going to be in charge of their children's core education. Gee, how could this go wrong?
I homeschooled 1 child for a year and the results were great. But it's not easy even with a bright, cooperative kid who has some of her mama's antisocial genes. Most kids and teens have been hanging with each other for months. If they were spreaders, we'd know it.
Christ, these people are all borderline.
K. T. Oslin did a nice song about three friends in school.
They were described as "one was pretty, one was smart, one was a borderline fool". Later in the song she says "me, I cross the border every chance I get"
Florida's governor DiSantis made a pretty good speech on this topic two days ago. He is pushing for schools to reopen as soon as possible, citing the harm to the students, the lack of any real risk to the students and the specific disadvantage that distance learning is placing on poor and minority students.
Luckily, our local TV stations immediately cut from his speech to the local school administrations and the teachers unions telling us that it is too dangerous to open the schools and we must protect the children. It was pretty jarring, coming directly on the heels of a detailed and scientifically documented explanation of exactly why students are at nearly zero risk from Covid 19 while attending school - specifically focused on the evidence that this virus is much less harmful to children than the seasonal flu.
We have sacrificed control of our lives and most of our economic activity to that notably incompetent organization known collectively as 'the government', and anyone who has read even a modicum of 20th-century history should know full well that *nothing* good comes of that.
And we have done so as a result of an illness which infects many and seems to cause real harm in few; so far, it has yet to kill 1/10 of 1/2 of 1% of our population.
After after more than 6 months of draconian controls, followed by a mild relaxation of these controls, we find a rise in the infection rate, accompanied by a falling death rate. The governments' response is to increase controls, which controls, from experience, seem only to have pushed the rise in infection rates down the calendar.
At one time we were told the controls would be withdrawn after 'the curve was flattened'; now is seems they will be lifted at the end of the war with Eastasia.
At least some of us are embarrassed at the lack of outrage from such a naked power grab, and I was not alone in calling for rioting in the streets the first day Newsom decided he was dictator, and told us when and under what conditions we could leave our prisons.
Again, this grab was accepted by us as a result of an illness which infects many and seems to cause real harm in few; so far, it has yet to kill 1/10 of 1/2 of 1% of our population.
The path forward and out of this government-inflicted disaster is suggested by Vaclev Havel's approach ("Post War", Judt, pg 568):
"...The objective [...] should be top act with autonomy, whatever the regime tries to impose on you; to live *as if* one were truly free…”
Regardless of the CA 'mask gestapo', I wear a face diaper when I must enter a business and nowhere else; any dirty looks get a smile in return.
No, I will not be tested, since it seems any test if valid for, oh, a week or so at best. Nor will I accede to any ‘tracking’ scheme, regardless of any claims of privacy.
Simply I attempt to act as if the world is not currently in control of tin-pot-dictator wannabes; if it means a ticket or jail for action, I'm your guy!
Excellent rant.
I am flabbergasted that only the nutjobs in the comments sections of the internet are voicing such concerns.
We used to have diversity of thought in this country, and a robust marketplace of ideas.
Now we have devolved to conformity... and not just normal conformity, but conformity to mind-numbingly stupid groupthink.
There are so many things about today's America that nobody from 1980 could have ever predicted, but the last thing anyone would have predicted is the death of a free and independent press. 1980 was at the height of the legend of Woodward and Bernstein, movies were made lionizing the heroic reporter, uncovering the truth and holding the powerful accountable.
Now we have a bunch of propagandists slavishly pushing the party line in a way that no Soviet era Pravda reporter would have dreamed of. At least they knew they were propagandists.
Thank you. If you contribute to any outfit willing to sue in behalf of those of us who value freedom, it's time to make the dollars count.
And:
"...1980 was at the height of the legend of Woodward and Bernstein, movies were made lionizing the heroic reporter, uncovering the truth and holding the powerful accountable..."
I admit to being a Nixon-hater but also harboring a suspicion even then that the 'purity' of the cause was less a commitment to transparency than a objection to any sort of 'conservative' taint:
HRC set up her own comm system, wiped it clean of evidence under subpoena and skated; Wa Po couldn't be bothered.
Yes, I'm an HRC-hater.
"Yes, I’m an HRC-hater."
I guessed you were.
Journalism has been living off that W&B after glow.
Which would have been an epic story....
Until Obama's white house used the FBI, CIA and State Department to spy on the Republican nominee.
That makes Nixon look like a piker and puts HRC's efforts to avoid FOIA requests to shame.
The NYT had the story immediately after the inauguration, if not before. I have linked to this article several times before. On March 1, 2017 the NYT published an article breathlessly praising the heroic efforts of Obama White House officials to run around distributing classified information throughout the government in order that it might be leaked upon Trump taking office. They literally had the conspiracy to sabotage the incoming administration and knew who the conspirators were.
They thought the story was "Look! They are totally going to get Trump!!" How they missed "Hey! A sitting president and his administration not only spied on the opposing party's candidate, they are using classified information in illegal ways in order to interrupt the peaceful transfer of power!"
This is actual "threat to the republic" level stuff, and not only did the NYT not care to investigate or follow that path -cheering it on instead- nobody else noticed or bothered to follow up. Well, nobody except nutters on the internet.
"1980 was at the height of the legend of Woodward and Bernstein, movies were made lionizing the heroic reporter, uncovering the truth and holding the powerful accountable."
No, movies were made about the Liberal reporter slandering the evil Capitalists.
I can't stand they've pushed me into this corner.
You have to be some kind of idiot to buy into this mask hysteria.
The problem is they've elevated this act to a virtue - a false virtue of course - but a virtue to people.
And the problem the sheep aren't getting is it's indefinite. The premier here said he wants to change habits and people accept it!
My employees though have told me they hate - and their friends hate it and their friends friends hate it. So hopefully people wake up soon enough from this false-virtue scam.
There's also something very wrong and creepy seeing the avatars of politicians in masks. They look like idiots. Cartoonish.
How anyone takes these posers seriously is beyond me.
Even Tony said he hates wearing the mask.
Fucktard
That mirror is a tough audience, isn't it, lefty fucktard?
What is your problem with a mask. I assume that you are some type of inbred cretin who dropped out of school after third grade because it was too “liberal”. If EVERYONE wears a mask and the infection rate does not drop in four weeks, then you have proved it is asinine to wear a mask and everyone can quit doing it. However, if EVERYONE wears a mask and the infection rate does go down, then we have saved lives while at the same time proving that it works. I am amazed at the number of pussies who think that wearing a mask emasculates them. Actually, it is thinking that you are better than God himself that emasculates you. You might as well cut your own balls off so you do not father any more cretins to pollute the world. Just wear the damn mask, for fucks sake.
"What is your problem with a mask..."
I'm guessing that's a question. If so, the answer is "none of your business".
Actually, it was a statement of incredulity. There was not a question mark at the end. By your statement, I am guessing you are one of those cretins that does not give a fuck about anybody. Fair is fair, and I don't give a fuck about you. I just hope that you catch COVID and bring it home to your entire family and that anyone in your family that does not die from it suffers for a very long time. Yes, that is mean and heartless, but that is the way I feel. I am more than OK you putting your life on the line. What you are doing is playing Russian Roulette. Any time you come into contact with a COVID positive person who is not wearing a mask, it is like spinning the cylinder and pulling the trigger. Keep doing it enough times and your luck will run out. At that point you will cry big crocodile tears wondering "Why was I so stupid?" "Why did I not listen to the scientists and not to President Trump?" Unfortunately, you may die before the election and not even have a chance to retaliate against him through your vote. THAT part saddens me because we need every single vote against Trump that we can get. So, if you do get COVID, at least try to live until November 3. After that you are nothing more than a useless burden on society and our health care system.
Ignoring your sophistry regarding the missing question mark, the answer is now:
"None of your business, you pathetic lefty thug", to which I'll add "Make your family proud and the world a better place: Fuck off and die".
You sound crazy.
Exactly! Life goes on, fuck the nanny state and those who love it.
1000%
The obsession with tests and masks is absurd. All a test tells you is whether or not you had COVID-19 on the day of the test. If you already had it and were asymptomatic, the test won't tell you that. And since it still takes days to get test results back, an individual could be exposed anytime after being tested.
The masks are gross. Some people are using disposable masks for days at a time. Some people are wearing disposable gloves all day, and repeatedly touching their mask and other things. How is this helping? Why have humans suddenly decided that they should or even can avoid all risk of illness? There is no scientific support for the possibility or any benefit in the long run.
What is your problem with a mask. I assume that you are some type of inbred cretin who dropped out of school after third grade because it was too "liberal". "What is your problem with a mask..."
I'm guessing that's a question, and if so, the answer is "None of your business."
Well I'm a woman and I don't believe wearing a mask is emasculating. I wear masks indoors as required I dont wear them walking down the street because that defeats the purpose of going outside for fresh air.
I dont have a problem with masks. I have a problem with leaders claiming a level of efficacy not supported by science. Where I live people have been wearing masks indoors and outdoors for months, even before it was required and most things are still shutdown, including indoor dining. But the case rate continues to climb and our lives and freedoms continue to be controlled. If the masks were so almighty effective then why do we still need such excessive restrictions while wearing them.
The surgeon general said several weeks ago the masks were our key to freedom. Well we have little more freedom now than we did before the mask mandates. That's my problem.

You cut-and-paste a lot.
"What is your problem with a mask."

This is what pisses me off about athletes kneeling during the anthem, but then doing nothing else.
How about spending some of your 100s of millions on private schools for black children?
"This is what pisses me off about athletes kneeling during the anthem, but then doing nothing else.
How about spending some of your 100s of millions on private schools for black children?"
No one sees that. It's easier and cheaper, and it buys more street cred with the woke crowd to be a slacktivist taking a knee on TV.
Black people spend a lot of money on private schools for black children. Our own children. I have always been bothered by the amount of focus on how much white investment there is in poor black communities, but little attention paid to why more upwardly mobile and wealthy blacks do not invest. Why so many of us move out of the hood as soon as possible and rarely, if ever, look back. There are plenty of poor white communities all over this country and I don't see all this outrage over the lack of investment in Appalachia or old abandoned mining towns. I guess if we acknowledge that people with money and power don't really care that much about people without money or power, regardless of race, it will be hard to blame 94% of America's problems on racism. Then the Democrats might actually feel pressured to come up with actual solutions to problems and that's just crazy talk.
>"Given that pods can be pricey, complicated to organize and self-selecting," cautions the paper's Melinda Wenner Moyer in an explainer this week, "they are likely to be most popular among families of privilege, experts say, and may worsen educational inequality.
If some students are learning while others are not, that *does* worsen inequality.
So your solution is to make those kids stop learning? Seriously?
If I had two apples and you had one, would you demand I throw an apple in the garbage just so there would be no inequality?
Hi, my name is Harrison Bergeron, and I approve of this post.
If you're going to co-opt an iconic short story, at least use the correct character.
No, they'd demand that you give up BOTH apples, and throw a molotov cocktail at you.
Incidentally, a molotov cocktail is yet another cocktail that AOC doesn't know how to mix properly.
"If everyone can't be helped, and no one can be helped"
That's the liberal credo for you.
So here we are - schools are closed, but if you want it opened you're some Trump loving anti science freak. If you want pods and homeschooling, those are either bad or racist. The only solution is for everyone to wait years until the ruling comes up with a fancy solution that offends and excludes no one. Your 12 year old who can't add or subtract properly has to wait 2 years until BLM approved plan comes up for a vote.
40 - 45% of white people and 25-30% minorities are sane this country. The rest are like that dog in the "this is fine" meme. They vote for AOC and Hugo Chavez and think rioting in Portland is a made up story. These people MUST be made to suffer. The white suburban liberal moms, a freakish blight in our nation and THE MOST reliable Joe Biden voting bloc, must lose their hair over having to spend all day with bitchy little white daughters who use antifa rhetoric to describe their mom as Hitler.
I sometimes hear these mom and daughter argue in their home. I know, I just KNOW the entire household votes democrat. They're pissy and unpleasant.
Neal Peart said it more succinctly in Trees.
These people are absurd to the tenth degree. The school system in Philly is going back to the drawing board for a school plan for the fall, barely a month before school is set to start because of the fears of a small minority of parents and teachers/principals. The school system has over 100K kids in it and just over 100 people made a fuss at some meeting they had on Thursday, which most of us parents didn't even hear about until after it was reported the following day. It's interesting that seemingly everyone who participated is anti-opening schools. Why it is so important to these people to force their way of life down everyone else's throat? If a parent wants their kids to stay home indefinitely, I think they're overreacting, but respect their right to overreact. But why should their individual choice dictate everyone else's choice? Stay home and let the rest of us get on with life. This all or nothing nonsense is destructive.
Considering most black kids in America live in urban centers within walking distance of some of the most renowned museums and free libraries on the planet, the only privilege i see are white parents valuing education.
It's as if different people have varying levels of ability, skill, competency and desire. Shocking.
Even that is a rather racist assumption on her part, since there are plenty of black parents who value education as well.
Did she slap the stupid out of her kid? why Hindi-Shayari
This is actually kind of awesome to see the unions tie themselves into knots. There is a decent chance that parents will begin to see that the public school system is full of shit. How can they not? They were able to look past it for the "free" babysitting and now they get Jack but still have to listen to abuse? There is going to be a reckoning one way or as another
If I ever meet the author of that screed, I'll slap her upside the head with a copy of Harrison Bergeron.
-jcr
The author of that screed is the third generation in a family of highly accomplished immigrant intellectuals, and if you look at her CV, she is a failure. That's the root of her anger and her desire to destroy.
What the media wants is to guilt trip everyone over everything, unless they're actually guilty of a crime, in which case the media wants to convince us to blame ourselves instead of the perp.
Fuck that.

Posted the link from above about the Times of London story on no teachers infected by students in a Washington Post article about the CDC saying some schools could be able to open.
You'd have thought I was recommending sending kids to the abattoir. Called me, the Times, and the epidemiologist liars. Posted stories of teachers doing virtual classes or teaching adults getting Covid as "proof" it was wrong. Just confirms my belief that Democrats don't want things to get better, and want fear to ramp up. At least until after Nov. 3.
"Parents are podding up not because they want to separate their children from people who don't look like them"
Bull
Fucking
SHIT
Did you misread the quote you are responding to? Or do you really think that parents are grouping up to handle homeschooling because they want to keep them away from brown people?
Because the latter interpretation makes no sense at all. They are already remote learning. They are separated from everyone by default. The pods put them in small groups of like-minded parents. So, regardless of race or any other factor, they are in a more diverse group with pods than without. Because without pods they are in no groups of any kind, and the diversity of one kid sitting all alone in his room for 4 months is zero.
Translation: "You must keep your children stupid and uneducated so that everybody becomes equally unemployable and stupid."
But let's see who is spreading these ideas: Clara Totenberg-Green one of the scions of the Totenberg family, a family with enormous academic and musical achievement, thanks in no doubt to the value her family placed on child rearing and education, a family steeped in one-on-one instruction. And what did she accomplish with all those advantages? A degree in Latin American Studies from NYU (i.e. worthless), and she's a public school counselor. She has accomplished so very little despite her own advantages and that's why she is angry and lashing out.
This may be the most spot-on analysis published in Reason in the last 6 years.
My wife is entering full anxiety mode worrying about the upcoming fall semester with our 3 kids home schooling. Last year was an epic failure from our school system - and we were the national poster children for getting things right. We had a pre-existing online education system, so the transition was seamless. They distributed equipment to every student and ensured that they had internet access. They even organized teams to check on students who were not logging in to school.
And even in my son's magnet school, where the high achieving students are concentrated - barely half of the middle school students bothered to log on at all. He got straight A's by default, because his parents spent 12 hour a day threatening to beat him if he didn't get busy and do his school work. He did poorly, but in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.
Not everyone is wired to receive remote instruction and thrive. Not every teacher is able to teach remotely. It is a completely different skillset.
There is no way that this doesn't seriously harm the educational progress of this generation of children. A few might discover that they learn better being guided through online education by their parents at home, but many more are going to float through this period making little or no progress.
This is an utter disaster.
I think you're giving public school education too much credit.
The kids who miss public school are likely no worse off because of it because public schools are just so worthless.
The kids whose parents are forced to home school likely end up better.
None of Your Business 2 is right: all this fright about students "loosing ground" is bullshit. The vast majority of time kids spend in government school is just wasted time.
The only real harm done is to kids locked up at home without socialization opportunities. (NOTE: this is not an indictment of homeschooling per se -- my kids are homeschooled and have plenty of opportunities to meet other homechooled kids *of all ages*, as well as plenty of interaction with a varied group of adults. The concern is with new homeschool parents who have no clue as to how to avail their kids of non-school sponsored activities.)
Any white person that allows themselves to be motivated by "white guilt" deserves every bad thing that's coming to them.
Man, I love the comments here on Reason!
Our Florida Governor, Ron Desantis has done a great job.
He is urging the schools to open.
My local Catholic School has decided to stay closed and do virtual school.
So I stopped paying them $800 per month and she can use the free virtual public school.
She and I can spend quality time and use the money to put gas in the airboat and buy ammo to shoot ... together.
can you still buy ammo tho? that $800/mo isn't even two cases of 9mm anymore, if you can find it 🙁
Reloading is your friend.
There is absolutely no situation at all that can't be converted into some racial injustice by liberals.
History is not going to be kind.
That depends on who's left to write it.
There are people here who think that teachers don't care. Actually, yes. We DO care about children. There is a problem. The tRump administration expects us to keep the kids safe without giving us the resources. If you have a classroom that has enough space to house 15 socially distanced children but used to house 25 children, WHAT are you going to do about those extra children. We can use labs, cafeterias, etc. to space them out, but where is the extra staff supposed to come from? Who is going to pay that? Maybe SOME schools get $15K plus per year for each student, but I can tell you that it is not every school. For those uninformed people among you who think that all the unions do is protect teachers, you obviously do NOT know what a teacher’s life is like. Contrary to popular opinion, we DO care about kids. That is why most of us work long hours beyond the school day with lesson plans, grading, providing tutoring services to our kids. Our unions have fought for additional teaching assistants because the special education students, the students with disabilities, the English Language Learners all need additional support. We buy supplies out of our own pocket every year so that students can have the minimum that they need for an education. We buy coats, hats, gloves, and even basic clothing for our kids. No one repays that money. We work to get parents connected with the social services that they need. We buy lunch for students who do not have money to pay for it. In essence, we DO give a fuck. There are a lot of students who rely on their grandparents for care. Those caregivers are part of a vulnerable population. A little over 8% if our students have asthma. Those children are at increased risk. Children ages 9-18 are in the age group most likely to transmit the virus. If those kids are shedding the virus and getting other people sick, then what in the hell does it matter if they themselves do not get real sick? Here we are trusting a man who knocks China for not stopping the virus. In this country, we have better scientists, better medical facilities, better drug companies. If China could have managed to stop the virus, then how in the hell did we end up with over 140,000 dead? Trump has decided that it is too dangerous to hold the convention in Florida. How come, given this insight, is it safe to cram all of the children back into schools. Seems to me that we are talking about a super spreader event. If you actually took the time to do research, see what opposing sides are doing/saying and the rationale for each of those, you may actually be able to see the logic of either providing the schools with enough money to keep them safely open or allowing 100% online learning. If you are NOT willing to come up with the money to do it safely and you are arguing that they need to open, then you are part of the problem. In fact, you ARE the problem. By the way, if you want schools to reopen quicker, wear a fucking mask.
"...The tRump administration expects us to keep the kids safe without giving us the resources..."
Why is it that fucking lefty ignoramuses spend half their lives coming up with nick-names for Trump which embarrass 1st grade kid?
Easy; the kids are smarter.
Now, fucktard, I have a hint: The schools are not funded by Trump.
One more hint: If you're that stupid, WIH are you doing teaching anything at all?
Fuck off and die.
Sorry. Let me get it right. Instead of tRump, I will call him the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon. Now according to the federal government DOES pay (funds) for schools. He is also threatening to hold back those monies for schools that do not reopen https://twitter.com/i/status/1286421974626050052. Now since I got the funding information from the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon, I made the assumption that the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon knew what he was talking about. I guess you are correct. I am a fucktard. I listened to the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon fucktard and thought he would at least tell the truth about THIS. My bad. I forgot how much he lies. I will live in shame for the rest of my days for being such a fucktard. At least I won't kill anyone because I am the one fucktard in a crowd who refuses to wear a mask.
"Sorry. Let me get it right. Instead of tRump, I will call him the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon..."
So the kids are still smarter than you.
You are right. They do not listen to the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon fucktard and think he is telling the truth. At least the ones who don't pick their nose and eat it. Those aren't your kids, are they?
"You are right. They do not listen to the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon fucktard and think he is telling the truth..."
How long did the indoctrination take?
And you still embarrass them?
By the way, there are more tweets from the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon about Federal school funding. He tweets about this story: https://reason.com/2020/07/09/dont-force-schools-to-reopen-but-dont-force-families-to-pay-for-closed-schools-either/. Leads to the question "Does the Federal Government help fund schools OR is the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon a fucking liar?" By the way, I do have a question mark "?" at the end of the sentence, so that makes it a question and not a statement. Figured I would provide you with some helpful information.
"...Leads to the question “Does the Federal Government help fund schools OR is the fat-ass, orange-faced racoon a fucking liar?”..."
Actually leads to the question of whether you are competent to, oh, tie your shoes without adult or grade-school kid supervision: See the comment just below, lefty fucktard.
Assuming you are actually a teacher, and have contact with children- Do you normally use that sort of language around them?
Since no one on the web knows you're a dog, your assumption is proper; this could easliy be a run-or-the-mill lefty pile of shit claiming to be a lefty pile of shit teacher.
If it *IS* a teacher, it's an odds-on bet that the indoctrination, if not the language, is accurate.
Oh, I missed your whine about the fed-funds, and since you are an ignoramus unsuited to teach anything to anyone (and a union thug besides, I'm sure) I did a long and arduous search just for you:
"... Yet federal funds only comprise a small percentage of school and district education budgets. Schools are predominately funded by local and state resources. According to Census Bureau data and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP), 2015 federal contributions only accounted for roughly eight percent of school budgets nationwide. (States contributed 46 percent and local revenue contributed 45 percent.)..."
https://sellingtoschools.com/education-management/federal-education-funding-explained/
(5th hit after lefty fucktards whining about Trump)
And then, he's offering it to the parents instead of the whiny scum teachers who haven't done a damn thing for 4 months and I'm sure collected money for sitting on their asses (and beating their spouses/kids/drinking that booze, right scum?
Just a horse-back guess, but firing all the whiny shitbags like you could probably save that 8%, right?
Before I forget, remember that I am a fucktard who does not understand what a genius like yourself is saying, exactly what does "WIH" mean? I get "WTH" as in "What the hell" and "WITH" as in "What in the hell?". But "WIH" just goes way over my fucktard brain.
"...But “WIH” just goes way over my fucktard brain."
Punctuation seems to go over your fucktard brain also; this is no surprise, you slimy piece of lefty shit.
I still am wondering what "WIH" means. Is that "What I Hump"? In that case stay away from my dog.
"I still am wondering what “WIH” means...."
Ask some of those 1st-grade kids; they'll roll their eyes when they tell you.
I understand now. Although you posted "WIH", YOU do not understand what it means. That's ok. I looked it up on Dictionary.com "WHAT DOES WIH MEAN?
WIH is an acronym that can mean when I'm high and can also refer to women in horror. The latter is frequently seen on Twitter as a hashtag, referring to women involved in the horror film business." Actually, neither one makes sense in the context in which it was used. I guess I will ask a first grader what it means.
"...I guess I will ask a first grader what it means."
By all means; you need all the help you can get.
"By the way, if you want schools to reopen quicker, wear a fucking mask."
Stuff it up your ass.
I most definitely will before I hand it to you and mandate that you wear it. Talk about the shit eating grin that you will have. Makes me feel tingly all over just thinking about it.
"I most definitely will before I hand it to you and mandate that you wear it..."
Didn't take long for THAT mask to fall, you fucking thug. Stuff your bullshit up your ass also, so your head has company, you pathetic piece of lefty shit.
By the wat, you don't have to beat up your wife and kids just because I made you mad. Leave them out of this. They are still recovering from the last time. Just suck down a bottle of Jack (if you can afford it) and sleep it off. In the morning you will remember that I am nothing more than a fucktard and am not worth stewing over. Just sayin.
"Just sayin."
Your projection is noted.
Actually, I am enjoying myself here. It is not often that I can tell COVID deniers what I really think. It is even better when they respond because I know they read it. Thank you for being a great audience. It is now time to get back to the TV, so I will have to say goodbye https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=Qy9_lfjQopU&feature=emb_logo
"...It is not often that I can tell COVID deniers what I really think..."
I very much doubt that.
First, no one here has 'denied Covid' or anything of the sort.
And than, as a whiny piece of lefty shit, I'm sure you never pass up an opportunity to make an ass of yourself over assumed issues, and do so loudly with an added dose of self-righteousness.
Fucking lefty thugs are just one more variety of fundies.
In fact, I doubt you ever stop running your mouth showing how idiotic you are and how proud of it you are also.
Oh, and I missed:
A "teacher" using youtube as a 'cite'! How.......
Pathetic...

The presumption behind this is that parents going outside of the public school system to educate their children is white supremacy because the parents with the means to do so are most likely white. The whole logic of tht train of thought is anti-individual, colectivist and racist. It is also harmful to children since it assumes that not allowing your child to have the lowest common denominator education is somehow immoral.
Nice Article, thank you for giving.
if you want to know about your health information in lockdown.
"Close the schools, every one of them. There is an opportunity here as some of the laziest people in human history, teachers in K-PhD, demand and clamor to retain their salary and benefits which have always been far more generous than they should thanks to unions and tenure for teachers and professors respectively. And these shiftless people also bear most of the responsibility for the intellectual wasteland that is the brainpower of three generations."
~ Bill Buppert
Maybe, the one good thing that we could extract from this pandemic is to end the ongoing and ever growing man made disaster of public education.
"How About Permanently Closing Public Schools?
Amidst the death and suffering arising from the coronavirus crisis, people have an opportunity to ponder some important questions about life and liberty. One question arises in the context of when state and local officials should force children back into school: Why should the state be involved in education at all?"
https://www.fff.org/2020/05/22/how-about-permanently-closing-public-schools/
Never let a crisis go to waste. And what could be a better prize for the anti-government right than a whole generation of uneducated spongelike minds for them to corrupt with their bullshit.
Private schools and home schooling both consistently provide superior educations to public schools at much reduced costs in dollars, contagions, and liberties.
Trump and the Trumpy right, as you acknowledge without self-awareness to last to your next post here, is screaming for the public schools. Maybe, precisely because they have already proven to produce "a whole generation of uneducated spongelike minds for them to corrupt with their bullshit" of Trumpiness putting them in power.
You mean schools with higher funding and more one-on-one time is superior to the type of schooling constantly being underfunded and overcrowded?
I don’t think any bad outcomes of public school have to do much with the fact that they just haven’t found the right pedagogical method like the Catholics have. I mean, if you want to import all children into private schools instead of just rich children, we can see just how that produces better outcomes for cheaper, somehow.
If you actually bothered to research it you would find most private schools, especially paroquial schools, have smaller budgets than the average public school, and spend less per student. The US public education system is one of the best funded in the world but ranks pretty low. We spend hundreds of percent more (even adjusted for inflation) then we did when the department of education was founded, but our academic achievement continues to decline. Throwing money at the problem seems to correlate with lower results. Yet all you progressives just want us to throw even more money at it.
So where are you going with this? Don’t you people want to take money from public schools and throw it at private schools? Is the argument that private schools, even with public funding, have some method they’ve discovered that can’t be applied to public schools?
When we’re integrating the 40 million public school kids with the 5 million private school kids, how does it differ from the same old public schools? Other than the presence of our lord Jesus, I mean.
Once you have to pay for all children, special ed and trouble kids from broken homes and all the rest, what’s the key difference you’re trying to sell, and why can’t we just implement that instead of going to the trouble of privatizing and re-subsidizing?
Not replace, give a choice. And it doesn't have to be religious schools. God you are so dogmatic.
"Trump and the Trumpy right,.."
Stuff your TDS up your ass so your head has some company, you pathetic piece of shit.
"...Maybe, precisely because they have already proven to produce “a whole generation of uneducated spongelike minds for them to corrupt with their bullshit” of Trumpiness putting them in power..."
BTW, I'm sure your are very proud of yourself, opposing someone who is boorish, regardless of what his efforts have achieved.
Fucking virtue-signalers are always looking for some way to improve their standing among other fucking ignormases, and you're doing fine, you pathetic piece of shit.
I’ve never seen right-wingers so eager to get children herded into government facilities. (White children anyway.)
I genuinely don’t get this one, but I’m sure there’s an simple cynical and grotesque explanation that I’m just missing.
Is it because the “I hate being around my kids this much” lobby is so powerful through sheer force of numbers?
"I genuinely don’t get this one, but I’m sure there’s an simple cynical and grotesque explanation that I’m just missing."
Fucking idiots are easily confused:
First, this is not about 'herding kids', it's about scumbag lefties claiming racism where none exists.
Further, it's about money: We're paying these over-priced baby sitters to take care of the kids, and if they're not going to do so, fine.
Return the money and nearly every one is more than willing to pay for 'pods' for better education and lower costs.
Perhaps they think education is one of the most important responsibilities our government takes on.
I think someone said that once, anyway. It’s hard to find them now.
So when I walked for my undergraduate bachelor's degree, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (my degree was from this college) was situated right next to the College of Education Graduates. Over a third of our graduates had honor cords for graduating cum laude or magna cum laude. The graduating classes of both Colleges were roughly equal in size. The College of Education had less than a tenth of their graduates wearing honor cords and only one Magna Cum Laude. Now to give you an idea, our College was home to the pre-veterinary program, for me to graduate from the pre-vet program (I decided to forgo veterinary school and got my Master's instead in Animal Science) I had to take 4 different levels of biology, two of them 400 level courses, two microbiology courses, three semesters of Chemistry, including organic chemistry, two semesters of physics, a semester of college algebra and another of calculus, two levels of statistics, one a 300 level, a 300 level of animal nutrition, a 400 level genetics, a 400 level reproductive physiology, two semesters of animal science, a 400 level diary science, a 400 level beef science, a 400 level horse science, a 400 level animal health and immunology. I managed to graduate cum laude, despite my daughter being born and my brother dying while I was an underclassman (I was on track for Magna Cum Laude before he died but got a C in organic chemistry the next semester and a B in horse science, was only 1 percentage point from an A). Even for those not in the Pre-vet program, but in a beef science or dairy science program, most of these requirements were the same (they could opt out of organic chemistry and take carbon compounds instead, and replaced two of their biology classes with 400 level range science classes, I also took those same classes as a graduate student). Now despite my training, and the fact that I took even more microbiology, biochemistry, range science, two more semesters of statistics, mammalian physiology, advanced Ruminant Nutrition, (all but the range sciences and one stats course we're 500 level or higher and the range sciences and the one stats were 400 level), TA'd, taught classes (two labs, and lectured for three other professors) and currently am a tenure tracked professor, with peer reviewed publications, I am not qualified to teach according to the state science at the elementary or high school level (I've taught at University level, ran tutor groups and review groups for University undergraduate students, was an instructor in the Army, but am not qualified to teach at the high school level). But someone with two semesters, none past 200 level, sciences is better qualified to teach high school science if they went to the College of Education.
"...But someone with two semesters, none past 200 level, sciences is better qualified to teach high school science if they went to the College of Education."
As "teacher" (above) demonstrates.
S/he and big bullshitter provide ample evidence that hatred of Trump is sufficient to claim moral and intellectual high ground.
All the summa cum laudes at my college were communications majors and ditzy sorority girls. Guess they were the smartest people around.
Willie Brown identifies the problem, whiffs the solution:
"Willie Brown: We’re creating separate and very unequal school systems"
[...]
"The idea is to transform dozens of city recreation centers, libraries and community centers into safe places where kids can go each day to hook up with their digital classwork, and at the same time get some badly needed social interaction and meals.
The hubs will operate five days a week during regular school hours and will be staffed by nonprofits and other organizations that already help with city-run after-school programs.
But we need more.
So far, the school district is not involved with the program, and that is a shame. These kids need more than babysitters. They need teachers..."
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/williesworld/article/Willie-Brown-We-re-creating-separate-and-very-15432333.php?cmpid=gsa-sfgate-result
We have them; they're called "teachers". And we have spaces where they can teach; they're called 'schools'.
But between the plant and the employees, they've yet to show any progress.
Perhaps the culture is involved here, Willie...
Yeah, do they ever do any self reflection?

"And what is a good citizen? Simply one who never says, does or thinks anything that is unusual. Schools are maintained in order to bring this uniformity up to the highest possible point. The word racist has lost all meaning to me. I am one half of a long standing interracial marriage. It is the decision of the parents as to how and where their children will attend school. No one should have to answer to these race hustling guilt trippers. We sent our four children to where we felt they'd receive a quality education. The rest of the arguments are nonsensical trash and should be discarded as such.
