Dispatch From Portland: A Distinct Lack of Crowbars and Cops
Up close with the #WallofMoms on night 53 of the protests

Portland looks pretty normal the morning I roll into town, birds singing, fresh air. I head downtown to the Federal Building, locus of the narrative we've been seeing all over the world: federal forces tear-gassing demonstrators and pummeling the legs of a Navy vet apparently made of brick.

Driving toward the Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse yesterday, the city appears relatively intact. Most stores are boarded up, but that's mostly due to COVID-19, which is on the rise in Oregon. The courthouse, however, looks anything but normal. The building is unrecognizable, its face completely gone—it looks like a building under construction, albeit with no doors, no windows. At noon, workmen are disassembling the temporary fencing that's been pulled down each night since the feds arrived. Asked whether they're going to paint over the graffiti, a foreman looks incredulous.

"No," he says. "They're only going to be back tonight."
By "they," he does not mean the protestors, who've been at it 53 nights: the thousands of locals who march while chanting "BLACK LIVES MATTER" and "SAY HER NAME" and "HANDS UP, DON'T SHOOT" and "FUCK THE POLICE." They are here again by 8 p.m., including a new contingent of women wearing yellow, women who have responded to social-media calls to create a Wall of Moms. There is some question as to whether this call started organically as a mom-group thing or, as a way to create an unimpeachably sympathetic faction, was covertly orchestrated by antifa. And while the question might seem an interesting or provocative one, it's apparently not to the two moms I ask, they're caught up in the moment, one goes off to speak with a news crew.
"I think she heard about it on Reddit?" responds one husband, before joining in 30 minutes of call-and-response, "FUCK TED WHEELER" and "FEDS GO HOME" and "ALL COPS ARE BASTARDS," the last round punctuated by the booms of a drum corps and several thousand people who stream past the federal building, ready for more chanting, more gathering, ready to show the world that they are peaceful protestors.
Meanwhile, one block away on a dark corner, a half-dozen young men on motorcycles and bicycles assemble. These are civilians, self-appointed to block off the street. An overhead camera has been spray-painted so as not to capture, maybe, the groups of two and three walking past. They are dressed in black; their faces are covered; they carry or wear bike helmets; their militia-like garb is meant to impart, one imagines, an air of menace. They do not look menacing. They look young, ungainly, and unsure how to proceed. One problem: The fencing has not been re-erected, so there's nothing for them to pull down. Instead they dance and skateboard and yell at each other. A burnt-out-looking white dude shouts, "I've spoken to a dozen black men! You don't speak for them! What you are doing is not about Black Lives Matter!" A young Asian woman in full-black garb charges him and shouts, "YOU DON'T SPEAK FOR BLACK PEOPLE! SHUT THE FUCK UP!" The crowd cheers.

This is the "they" the foreman spoke of, the 200 or so that gather every night. They've been cooped up for months and now they're ready to burn, to get some mayhem going, though they don't see it that way.
"We're just here to protect people and get their voices heard," a 22-year-old guy tells me, as he and his crew each grab a plywood shield from a pile someone has dumped on the ground. His friend was here two nights ago and got hit in the legs with pepper bullets.
"This is some fascist shit," he says. "This is not OK."
It's now 11:30 and the larger group of protestors is making one last sweep through, shouting "FUCK TED WHEELER" over and over as the 200 install a #WallofMoms between themselves and the building. This seems to quell things a bit, neither the group outside or any feds inside seeming to have an appetite for mowing down a bunch of middle-aged women. But then the moms are let go and a new volley is launched at the building, people banging on it with their skateboards and scrabbling at it with their hands.
Shit show begins #Portland2020 pic.twitter.com/o9mRE0xrNY

"Did not one of them think to bring any tools, maybe a hammer or a crowbar?" asks my friend. While one imagines what kind of trouble this might bring from the cops, there's no reason to worry about the Portland police, not one of whom I've seen in three-plus hours. There is zero police presence, the mayor having years ago instructed the police that protesters are not to be arrested, the definition of protestor apparently being fungible. And so the battering, the rave-like mania, carries on.
"What will we do if we do get inside?" a young woman asks her friend. I tell her that I don't think people have thought that far ahead; that it's about the show out here, not about carrying forth any particular plan.
"I think you're right," she says, looking a little relieved. She's wearing a jumper and weighs maybe 90 pounds soaking wet; she won't be ready for any physical confrontation.
But it's coming for her anyway. Several young men have torn a hole in the plywood, one is banging on it with a fire extinguisher, and the shield-boys are banging on it with their shields. Instantly the air is filled with military-grade CS gas, there are loud flash-bangs, and the crowd is falling back, running, getting out of the way of the first volleys.
"Do you need your eyes rinsed out?" three people ask as we make our way to the car, coughing. It's 1:45 a.m., and it does not look as though there is going to be the sort of violent direct clashes that happened the previous two nights. Maybe the feds have gleaned that the optics of this aren't great.
If the lone motorcyclists and bicyclists stationed at intersections downtown, trying to block our way, have an agenda, I don't know what it is. What I do know is, despite their telling us we can't drive around them, we do, where we see, for the first time, a Portland police vehicle, driving into the night and away.

I really don't know where to start with that one.

God forbid people walk in to a store (assuming they have a mask on). But of course mass gatherings of hundreds of people are totally okay and you'll be completely immune from the virus so long as you're only protesting against racism.
Be the change you wish to see in the world.
Yea, that lie was a bad start.
Article turned out to be decent though.
Not quite impartial, but closer than I expected
Nancy has to tiptoe carefully. Their Portland business took major hits from cancel culture when she became problematic.
Despite denouncing and cancelling one of their own suppliers
"By "they," he does not mean the protestors, who've been at it 53 nights: "
The only question is whether "he does not mean" is a typo or a lie. Really strange typo, if so.
The whole thing reads strange, actually. You almost read air quotes between the lines, every denial of violence is followed by a description of it. It's like the OP is being written under protest.
Seems like the "they" that's referred to is the group that's intent on doing some kind of damage (or at least be seen appearing to try?) who aren't part of the protest but are using the chaos/activity level of the protest being around as a form of cover/camouflage for whatever it is they're getting into.
It might have been helpful for this piece to mark the time at which the "wall of moms" broke up and headed home for the night. The still photos being distributed on various social media that I've seen seem to be put out with the intention to imply that they're our there for the majority (or maybe even the entirety) of the duration of the nightly protests.
It'll be interesting to see how the leftists who did so much pearl-clutching and performative outrage over the Bundy family's takeover of a closed-for-the-season sign-in hut in the middle of nowhere (because it being a "federal facility" somehow made it sacrosanct) might react if/when these vandals in Portland actually breach the interior of a federal courthouse in the downtown portion of a major city.
I can answer that one, as I live in downtown Portland. They were boarded up after the first few nights of riots, when all private businesses and property were looted and destroyed. None were boarded up before. This is also barely touches on the level of destruction in my neighborhood.
10000%. Would not have been hard to fact-check this, which means they wanted to print a lie.
HERE► Brilliant article. I had wondered how future generations would view the mind boggling hysteria that is currently gripping the whole world, especially Europe and the USA. Apparently, a particularly aggressive strain of COVID-19 is breaking windows in Portland.
thread winner
^^^^
so what, every year the flu breaks thousands of windows
Well, every year but 2020z
We have Covid here in central Georgia and I don't see storefronts boarded up. Then again, we don't have "protesters" looting and burning other peoples' shit.
One of several differences between Georgia and Portland.
The disease affects minorities differently. Only pasty whiteys lose their windows.
Andy Ngo is saying they looted a jewelry store and set fire to H&M after they got tired fucking with the courthouse last night. So, ya know, "Covid"
My thoughts exactly. You dont put up plywood because of a spicy cold.
Plywood is an anti-viral apparently.
So is rioting

Far-left rioters in Portland attacked a federal officer last night during an arrest outside the Hatfield Courthouse, allowing the violent criminal suspect to escape.
Some of the “moms” lauded in the media joined in on trying to break into the Portland federal courthouse.

One of the “moms” at the Portland riot handed a large piece of concrete to a male to use as a weapon outside the Portland federal courthouse, by the way.
The "moms", from what I've seen, are utter cows.
I'm guessing that they coordinated much more closely with the rioters than the article lets on.
Nice to see "protesters" showing up, being their usual charming selves, and knowing full well that their presence will enable mass violence.
Good folk!
Any Ngo's said that many of the "moms" are just known antifa members who've taken the black off. They're trying to appear more sympathetic
Wow; you don't take down paneling by trying to [weakly] mule kick it These people could not find their way out of a paper bag if their lives depended on it.
It's not like they can attack the paneling from behind with a bike lock and then have friends join in while it's stunned. So, don't expect too much from them
That’s racist!
Comedy is watching a dude with a Man Bun try to do manly things.
What, THAT was a DUDE?
Reminds me of the line from "Glory" where Denzel Washington asks Morgan Freeman: "Is you a old man or a old woman? I forget."
Racist with attempted sexism!
I watched a video from Seattle the other day with the protestors peacefully trying to throw furniture through an Amazon store window.
The window was plexiglass, so the furniture just bounced off. Our brave hero in a man bun decided that must mean he didn't throw it hard enough, so he tried again with all his might. The furniture of course just bounced off the window harder, and knocked him over.

funnily enough, Sarah Palin's Buttplug has been rather quiet lately... think (s)he's too busy pretending to be tough in portland?
Child molesters are the next group of Sacred People after trannies become commonplace and go out of fashion.
Based on what this article says, these protesters absolutely deserve an extrajudicial beating, pepper spraying, and more from federal agents. Why should the police follow any civil rights laws when there are vandals afoot?
*cringe*
Man, you guys can’t even mock well. Sad.
Molly by Golly is no threat to OBL, or the up and coming Rabbi.
I guarantee you all of the protesters arrested by the federal agents in Portland this past weekend absolutely loved every second of it, it gives them a great story to tell at their next Anarchist book club meeting.
Hey a real take from a libertarian on this site.
There is zero police presence, the mayor having years ago instructed the police that protesters are not to be arrested, the definition of protestor apparently being fungible.
One that admits to the daily violence. One that questions the peaceful narrative. One that calls out the intentional blocking of roads to stop arrests. One that admits to the sun down violence.

The problem isn't 'racism' but the destructive, cynical and hypocritical shutdowns that keeps kids idle, despondent and restless. Dems fearmonger about covid for political gain, but eventually they will realize that only a few of them can be appointed to Biden's politburo and the rest will be left scavenging for scraps and clawing each other. Whether this happens before the election is anyone's guess.
They don't all need to be in the politburo. Minitrue will keep reassuring them that all the true-believing party members still have it better than the mere proles.
Antifa is playing chess while law enforcement is playing checkers.
Oh?
Please do go on
Antifa is playing Calvinball.
While the police are being ordered by the local government, (Which is arm in arm with Antifa.) to lose.
I don’t get it. The wall of moms is supposed to protect the protesters from the feds?
And then the protesters bang on a building until they convince the feds to lob tear gas?
Is that ritual?
No, it's supposed to generate bad press for anybody who tries to restore law and order in Portland. It's propaganda.
And it's succeeding.
And you have a problem with that because you’ve suddenly decided to be on the side of cops.
Was a time not long ago when anyone defending cops, especially cops doing unconstitutional things, weren’t welcome in these here parts.
Sure, but now the cops are constitutionally trying to stop rioters and arsonists, and we're cool with THAT, because we actually distinguish between constitutional and unconstitutional things.
Guess your lefty boos shouldn't have gone full retard. Oh well.
Not so much on the side of cops as opposed to violent little commie shits playing revolution. There are a few things that libertarians think cops should do.
And that includes feds rounding up protesters on the orders of the president.
It's window dressing for the useful idiots here.
got it in one
If you go to the area where violent rioting and property destruction takes place, you're not a protestor, you're a rioter yourself. And the fact that these people use propagandistic and manipulative slogans only underlines this point.
Uh no. That would mean then that any small group could then go to a peaceful protest, riot, and turn everyone else unwillingly into a rioter. That is just a variation of the heckler veto, which is considered invalid.
Time to protest Molly's home
Or.... stay with me now...
The protestors could basically force anyone committing violence to go to the police...
Or... stay again...
Let officers through to arrest those causing the violence...
Instead of....
Blocking the roads so the police can't get to the people getting violence.
Yes, because the police at these demonstrations are known for their ability to tell apart those who are commenting crimes and those who are not. What will happen is the cops will just beat the. At the protests I go to there are de-escalaters who would eject any rioters, but I am from a small town and our protests are calm.
The cops have arsonists on camera discussing the buildings theyve lit on fire. The d.a. released them.
It is very easy to take down someone throwing rocks and bricks if the protestors clear a path.
You talk a lot of shit for someone that has never stopped a crime in his life.
Suddenly Chipper Morning Dumbass knows how to stop a riot.
I've been at right wing protests, and if anybody had picked up a brick to lob at somebody, they'd have been taken down so fast your head would spin. By us protesters, not the cops. Because we weren't there to riot, and we knew anybody who picked up a rock was there to discredit us.
This. Lobby Day in Virginia was very carefully planned and organized to prevent exactly that sort of disruption.
"those who are commenting crimes"
uh oh think I found one
It’s not their fucking job to help cops get perps. Do you people even remember being libertarians?
"This is a peaceful protest! Quick keep the cops from arresting the rioter! Hey, why are we being called rioters, this was a peaceful protest!"
So what’s your thoughts on the term systematic racism? It seems to have same underpinnings on guilt by association. What about a lot of folks saying defund the police (not saying you Feel this reason maybe you do or have other reasons or even dont feel this way)based on the believe that having a few bad cops makes them all bad
I have now come to realize that systemic racism is very real, and it is not enough to be non-racist, one must be actively anti-racist. So those who are passive are still part of the problem. As for the "good cops", they don't stop the "bad cops", so they are really not good.
The actively anti-racist don't seem to be stopping the passively non-racist from being racist, so that would make the actively anti-racist really racist.
Your logic, by the way.
Well done
I have now come to realize that systemic racism is very real, and it is not enough to be non-racist, one must be actively anti-racist
but I am from a small town
"I have now come to realize that systemic racism is very real, and it is not enough to be non-racist, one must be actively anti-racist"
Does this sound like a cult mantra to anyone else?
It is a cult mantra. It's what all these fucking people say. Press them on details of what being "actively anti-racist" means, and you'll discover that other than rioting, vandalism, and other performative displays, forcing other people into the cult is pretty much the totality of it. The logic is that until all are part of the cult, racism continues unimpeded. But given how racist the anti-racists are (against everyone), I'm sure racism will be doing better than ever after everyone has been blackmailed and intimidated into saying the correct phrases in the correct order.
Well said!
So, no cops are 'good' because none of them are stopping the 'bad' cops.
But 'good' protesters have no responsibility to help stop 'bad' protesters?
Now you are learning, young padawan.
'Good' protesters have not been given weapons and arrest powers by the government. So I'd say no, they aren't responsible for 'bad' protesters. Can't say the same for cops.
Bad cops can be punished. Protesters in Portland cannot be.
Are you for real? You don't really believe this insane toxic "systemic racism" fascist cult crap do you? Do you realize that the movement is what it supposedly abhors, racist and fascist?
"As for the “good cops”, they don’t stop the “bad cops”, so they are really not good."
Now do "peaceful protesters" and "rioters"
When the place where you protest every night for 53 straight days always turns into some kind of property destruction and violence, you have a little less credibility.
"Sure, the rioters wouldn't be able to fit if we weren't there, but get together anyway! The chances are only like 99% a riot will happen because we gathered..."
When a protest that you're part of turns into a riot, you either help suppress the rioters or you leave. If you stay and don't actively suppress the rioters, you've chosen to be part of the riot.
"X is a variation of Y which some unnamed people consider invalid" is not an argument. Try again.
By your logic the crowd that stood by and cheered as Will James was lynched in Cairo Illinois was just a peaceful group of bystanders, only the ones who actually lynched him are to blame?
well, yeah. Legally speaking, it doesn't matter if the entire protest is peaceful except one person, if that one person is throwing explosives and the rest aren't doing anything to stop him, they're assisting in the violence, and cops are legally allowed to break up the protest. It's what Antifa & the Portland government have done to shut down multiple moderate/right-wing protests that they don't want happening but can't legally forbid. Antifa starts fights and then the cops declare a riot when the legitimate protesters protect themselves.
But you're making a strawman argument because everyone knows that they're going to a riot, this isn't a case where assholes are showing up and disrupting a peaceful protest, it's people showing up to a violent riot for the fun of it. You don't get to pretend you're a victim if you get teargassed at these things.
If every time you drink, you get black out drunk and beat up your wife and kids...at a certain point, it's not the alcohol that is causing the problem.
"Most stores are boarded up, but that’s mostly due to COVID-19, which is on the rise in Oregon."
I'm curious about this sentence. I live in a small town and none of our stores have boarded up windows. Is that something that keeps the virus out of the store? If so, I can't find the requirements on the CDC website. Does anyone have the specs? Is 3/4 plywood sufficient? All our stores are open although some require masks in order to make everyone feel safe.
Nothing, but nothing is boarded up because of COVID-19. Closed? Absolutely. They're boarded up because they don't want their shit destroyed or looted by peaceful protesters.
Yeah my mom just got back home to Oregon nothing is boarded up for covid where she lives.
I'm convinced the above essay isn't meant to be taken seriously. There are so many "tells" in it. It's like one of those films of POWs explaining how nice the camp is while blinking "SOS".
The lies have to be told for it to be published, but they aren't meant to be believed.
Most stores are boarded up, but that's mostly due to COVID-19, which is on the rise in Oregon.
God I love this site.
Having now read the whole thing, I will admit that this is infinitely better than the one from the SJW lunatic in Virginia(?).
"Race didn't exist until it was invented in Virginia." Yeah that guy.
"Race" (in the modern political sense) was invented by scientists and progressives in the 19th century; prior to that, the concept didn't exist.
Yay another Reason article about someone tweeting shit.
We could remember a time when logic and reason and rationality ruled. But let's despise the citizenry and property owners and instead put the chaotic masses on the pedestal.
Fuck all libertarians to hell.
This is the most important paragraph of the piece.
I always enjoy those rare articles that slip out the actual news 3/4ths of the way down. It's like a someone ripping a fart in the middle of a speech - Pay no attention to that!
If the lone motorcyclists and bicyclists stationed at intersections downtown, trying to block our way, have an agenda, I don't know what it is. What I do know is, despite their telling us we can't drive around them, we do, where we see, for the first time, a Portland police vehicle, driving into the night and away.
This is the second-most important paragraph of the piece.
he was probably going to buy some plywood to board up the police station because of COVID
The one Black Lives Matter protest I've personally witnessed was small, maybe fifty or sixty people, all of but two or three of the protestors white. My wife and I were walking down the street toward them because they were near where our car was parked. A few of the protestors, young white guys, were hovering near the edge of the crowd acting like lookouts. When they saw us approaching, they briefly made a threatening display and stepped toward us, but when we got closer and they got a better look at me (I'm a big guy), they seemed to think better of it and pulled back toward the other protestors. We passed unimpeded. My guess is that whether you get to pass depends a lot on how many protestors there are and whether they think they can easily take you. It's also pretty obvious that some protestors are designated as a "block traffic" detail. This hostility toward random passersby is continuous with the "actively anti-racist" stance. If no neutral position is possible, we're all guilty. These people are acting like the cops they despise. They want to crack heads and arbitrarily lay down the law to flex their authority. When I see antifa types, after I finish laughing, I think, "Cop." And almost always, it's a white cop.
BTW, I thought Nancy Rommelmann left Portland after she became problematic with the intersectional crowd.
She's apparently being hosted by a couple of fedora-tippers. They're probably hoping she lets them get to second base before she goes back to DA BIG CITY.
The kid with the Giro helmet, Scott goggles, and Van's shoes riding a bike with a kickstand really sums up the whole movement.
"Do you have a citation or video showing he bought those himself?"--Antifa apologists
"Most stores are boarded up, but that's mostly due to COVID-19, which is on the rise in Oregon."
This is either a lie or utter ignorance. I was in the Twin Cities visiting my parents when the riots began. They were literally in the process of opening businesses back up so I saw everything before and after both the riots and the stay at home order. NOTHING was boarded up....then the riots started and businesses were boarding up as far away as the northern suburbs of St. Paul because they didn't want to be robbed blind or set on fire.
Hey Portland... Welcome to Detroit 🙂 Gangsters RULE!!! /s
"Gangsters Rule"? or "save our Democracy" -- About the same concept isn't it? No Republic, No Supreme Law, No moral code -- Gangsters rule in all things. Power to steal/vandalize/terrorize = Wealth deep inside the mind of every democrat.
OT: 15 shot at once in Chicago funeral home shooting. No idea how many dead.
In other, potentially far more concerning news, the local Chinese consulate is having one hell of a documents BBQ in their courtyard. https://www.click2houston.com/news/local/2020/07/22/houston-fire-and-police-responding-to-reports-of-documents-being-burned-at-consulate-general-of-china/
There is video at the link. I had thought burning documents in the embassy courtyard was one of those things you did when you thought the place was going to have to be evacuated. For expulsion from the host country, say. Or for war.
Funeral home? Covid strikes again.
Of I ran a gang I would rebrand as Covid and shut down entire cities.
Tired: Covid Strikes Again.
Fresh: Trump Dispatches Unidentified Plainclothes Federal Officers To Shoot Up Black Funerals Across The Country To Quell BLM Riots - In Violation Of Constitution.
Damn that systemic racism.
Somebody's about to donating some organs for this incinerator oversight.
So you're saying a Chinese official shot 15 people in Chicago to cover up their document inferno in Houston, and they're going to invade Hawaii...
I like it
I'm OK with China invading Hawaii, although I'd prefer we could go back in time and cede the place to the Imperial Japanese instead.
On a serious note, tension with China does seem to be ramping up.
You think BBC run the train station video and grills a Chinese official on it 5 years ago? 2 years ago? Last year?
Oh you....
Turns out the State Department gave this particular consulate until Friday night to GTFO. The reason given by State early today was, ""We have directed the closure of PRC Consulate General Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and American's [sic] private information."
Justice Department must have gotten angry about various trade secrets thefts and this latest coronavirus information hack. In addition to the gobs of trademark fraud goods that flood the Port of Houston.
Anyway, we're not at war with the PRC. Yet. The US is probably going to lose a consulate in China though. Wuhan's is, AIUI, mostly evacuated already, so the Chinese'll probably pick another one.
Expect some more freedom of navigation exercises and general saber rattling too. I half expect a US ship to catch a stray mine during one of those.
If that happens, I think sinking their aircraft carrier would be an appropriate response.
And I thought taking out Suleimani would be the proper response to the embassy attack, though i figured it was so outside the realm of possibility that it wasn't even worth bringing up.
That one was a pleasant surprise
So I'm curious. I've heard people say that this whole shitshow is confined to "just a few blocks" of Portland. Obviously, from what I've seen here, those few blocks look like a total hellhole. But it does lead to me question just how many people live in the area, and if it's non-residential, how many businesses had to shutter because of this bullshit?
Doesn't matter. Portland sold all businesses to the [WE] foundation mob. Individuals have no rights in the [WE] mob ruled plantation.
"Selling" is an awfully capitalist idea, and one that implies that the business owners received some compensation for their trouble.
"Allowed to be seized" is what you were looking for.

“There is zero police presence, the mayor having years ago instructed the police that protesters are not to be arrested, the definition of protestor apparently being fungible.”
And as I well know from years of intensive libertarian study, when local authorities make a decision I disagree with, the federal government is entitled to FUCK ‘EM UP.
Stop it. Get some help.
He's really assmad that a couple of his allies were minorly inconvenienced for a couple of hours.
You morons cried for years upon years over Obama tyranny that never even fucking happened except in your fever dreams. You have no political beliefs except that (R) should win, and you’re barely even pretending otherwise.
Any thoughts on Obama's IC attempt to railroad Gen Flynn?
Federalism trumps everything, including individual liberty.
That's just libertarianism 101, at least in Tony's school.
The Trump goons are violating both you unprincipled half wit.
While protecting the property rights of the people that Portland has refused to protect. The "protestors" have no right to vandalize private property, or start fires, or assault people. The federal police stopping them from doing so is not a violation of their rights.
Ignoring that for a moment, in a libertarian society that's actually a valid function of government; intervening when individual's rights stand at odds with each other. Presuming they were really just protesting (an actual right of theirs), they STILL don't have a right to prevent other people from utilizing their own property.
"...or, as a way to create an unimpeachably sympathetic faction, was covertly orchestrated by Antifa."
oh, come on. Everyone knows there's no Antifa, just like there's no Cancel Culture. The author must be a racist Nazi.
And more "peaceful" protests. This time in Chicago.
https://www.lawenforcementtoday.com/49-officers-injured-with-18-sent-to-the-hospital-after-grant-park-protest-turns-into-riot/
A bit tougher fight than kicking the shit out of a bartender who wouldn't over serve them, isn't it?
The important question is, was everybody wearing a mask and safely social distancing?
According to officials, “vigilantes” planned an “ambush” against Chicago Police Officers, which led to violence among activists and police.
The video that the CPD put out is pretty astounding. Like, "If real, I can but don't totally believe what I'm seeing and, if fake, is Grade A++ psyops gaslighting." astounding.
Initially, the protest was organized to empower Indigenous people in Chicago, and to call for the removal of the controversial Christopher Columbus statue in Grant Park.
Also, it's only a matter of time before this doesn't fly. There aren't any indigenous people in Chicago. Our community reached out to a local organization to get in touch with any local tribal representative and the contact we were given, a certified member of the tribe, had a Polish last name and grew up on the south side of the city.
There are ways to have statues moved or taken down and marches aren't one of them. Not to mention that, once again, there's no reasonable reason why you can pull down the Columbus statue that reasonably refutes pulling down the The Bowman and The Spearmen on Congress Plaza, the famous and incredibly racist and appropriative 'Bean', and tearing up Buckingham fountain.
I agree with people's right to march as protected under the 1A, but a 1A march against a piece of art? I'm not sure or entirely clear that's unequivocally protected by the consitution one way or the other.
"I agree with people’s right to march as protected under the 1A, but a 1A march against a piece of art? I’m not sure or entirely clear that’s unequivocally protected by the consitution one way or the other."
It pretty clearly is. Nothing in the constitution says your speech has to make any sense. Raving lunatics are still afforded 1A rights.

Right, but your free speech rights don't intrinsically trump my free speech rights or vice versa and not any/every phrase that can be uttered is protected free speech. If I apply for a permit to put on a "Murder Fat Mike's Drug Habit in his home" and the city rejects it, I'm pretty sure that if I appealed on 1A grounds, I'd lose. Doubly so if you consider that today's ACLU would tell the Nazis in Skokie to go fuck themselves and then file suit against them for discrimination.
I suggest we should all just be very grateful that we live in a time and place where people have the luxury to fret about statues and memorials to people long dead.
It would be interesting, if one had a time machine, to watch some of the people of today try to explain to those from past eras how that monument in the park over there is the primary source of their suffering and oppression.
So where is the story about all those moms getting arrested for child abandonment? There are terrible mothers and should have CPS troops permanently stationed in their homes.
A good chunk of these "moms" are just the usual protesters wearing a different shirt. A bunch of them are even trannies.
"Men menstruate too, bigot!!!"
I live here. The narrative is correct. Yes, the city has been cleaned up repeatedly, so now it is limited to several blocks of the city. However, the damage at times has stretched from NE portland to downtown in SW; where I live. There has been different damage at different times to private and public property. The boarding up was in direct response to the firsy night of riots, and the millions robbed and looted. Those were not "peaceful moms" by the way, they were the same protestors dressed in yellow, who happen to be women. It is a shit show here. Feel free to check out Andy Ngo's twitter fead videos if you want to believe you lying eyes.https://twitter.com/MrAndyNgo
I do not see what having the feds there is going to accomplish, other than to provide a sympathy platform for the "protesters." Leave Portlandia to it's own devices and let its misguided and ineffective "leadership" [sic] reap the consequences. Perhaps the good citizens might decide for themselves what does and does not work for them.
If they will leave the Federal building alone the Feds will leave them alone. You are under the misguided conception the Feds are patrolling the streets of Portland enforcing the law, what they are doing is peacefully (yeah I said peacefully) sitting in the Federal building when these “Protestors” show up and start vandalizing the building, apparently attempting to break in and loot the place. My guess is they were hoping to turn it into another “6th Precinct in Seattle” situation. The disappointment that someone actually stopped them from that goal is probably one of the reasons they have been so aggressive in their assaults on the building. Nothing worse than an itch you can’t scratch.
That is not why Trump said he’s sending goons to cities. Stop making excuses for him.
Because nobody had heard of Antifa perpetrating violence against anyone until the feds showed up?
I guess it's not inaccurate to portray pretty much anything as escalation relative to a smouldering hole in the ground.
While I understand the desire to do this; that's just damning everyone in the area to live under anarchy. The local government has completely abdicated it's responsibility to protect the rights of the people in Portland against a violent mob, do we really think the Federal government has so role in safeguarding those rights?
It's an interesting problem for Federalism; if your State refuses to recognize and protect your rights, are you just shit outta luck? Or does the left really wish for people to be responsible for protecting their own rights? I suspect they aren't going to like what that looks like outside of a few corrupt city centers.
Since the federal goons are, completely predictably, only escalating protests and violence, what is your point again?
Oh yes, local governments aren’t doing what you want them to do so you think it’s ok to crush them with federal police. Just like a libertarian would.
How are the feds crushing local government? They're crushing a bunch of commies who are destroying property rights.
You again think that I care about federalism or local control more than I care about individual liberty; I don't. Men from mars could come down and defend the property rights of the people of Portland and I'd cheer them for it.
Since you pretend to be libertarian, you do believe in property rights, yes? So you'd be fine with property owners just gunning down the people who are set to burn their building down, right? That's preferable to the feds arresting people and later releasing them?
Since you pretend to be libertarian, you do believe in property rights, yes?
Tony's no libertarian and you're being foolish to assume he has any principles at all. He's notorious for his ability to contradict himself in a two-sentence post.
Rockstevo has it correct. The feds are relegated to the federal property. They aren't a roving band of law enforcement cracking down on Portland riots writ large. I do agree that the Trump administration should do everything in its power to avoid falling into the honeypot that is Portland, but I'm not sure what the answer is here in regards to the federal property itself. Fact: The feds have property. Fact: Portland rioters (sometimes erroneously referred to as 'protesters') are actively vandalizing and/or trying to destroy/loot/burn down said properties. Do the feds abandon said properties or do they defend them?
It’s not the feds protecting federal property that people are objecting to. If Trump wants to fish around for a constitutional justification for his actions, you should let him do it and stop making excuses for him.
Trump's not fishing. You yourself recognize him as no Constitutional Scholar. He gave an order and Barr/The DOJ are doing their best to execute it within the scope of the law. As I said elsewhere, I'd wager that at least part of the plan/goal is to overtly control federal property while killing fewer black kids than the CHOP private security force and to simply have agents on the ground when the rioters give up in order to hang the 'Mission Accomplished' banner.
It's not like the "They're trying to tear down the Federal Courthouse to protest local police standing on George Floyd's neck" narrative is going to hold water for another month. Espeicially as more and more white kids from Portland get snatched up and released two hours later, unharmed, to tell their tale.
"....white dude" "asian women.."
pretty much says it all... "white" not European American? I mean is the lower cap "w" on purpose to demean or devalue the man because of the continent of origin? Just playings the left's game.
Govt exists to protect your life, liberty, and property...sounds like the Portland Bolsheviks are harming all three..

"Instantly the air is filled with military-grade CS gas"
Military grade. Is that even a thing? Are ordinary cops somehow prohibited, or otherwise unable to obtain such a substance?
And exactly what sort of expertise enables her to tell the difference? Isn't this just like the old cop shows where the detective uses his pinky to take a taste from the bag of white powder, spits it out, and declares is 'pure' cocaine?
Really hard to take someone seriously when they drop clangers like that one.
Credible she is not. And Reason's journolistic 'standards' are revealed once again.
What a happening in Portland. Better than paintball, better than video games, better than raves. Just go and pump the crowd.
