Brickbat: Collegial Misconduct

Alexander, Arkansas, police officer Calvin Nicholas Salyers has been charged with felony manslaughter for the killing of fellow officer Scott Hutton, who was shot through Salyers' front door. Hutton had gone to visit Salyers one evening. When he knocked on the door, Salyers grabbed his gun and went to answer. He says when he transferred the gun from his right hand to his left to open the door, he accidentally fired through the door, hitting Hutton. He also said he saw saw a man standing on his porch with a gun on his hip and didn't recognize Hutton until after he'd shot him. Salyers had previously told a department sergeant, after the riots in Minneapolis started, that he would shoot any protesters who came to his home through the door. The sergeant says he told Salyers that shooting someone before he had identified them and confirmed that they were a threat would be reckless and negligent.

It always amazes me when someone says a gun 'accidentally ' went off. You have to pull the trigger on modern guns. He most likely had a Glock, and believe me, they don't just go off . A cop should know this is a stupid excuse.
Yeah but if it wasn’t a cop he shot it would have been an acceptable excuse.
Even classical guns still have to be pointed at the target when the hammer strikes.
Yeah. There's no "accidentally went off." It's "negligent discharge."
Yet another example of the notorious Glocksidental discharge.
Glocks are great pistols, simple, rugged, reliable, and good shooters; but I've never wanted to own one for the simple fact that it is striker fired [hammerless], has no active/ manual safety, and [unlike a revolver] has a fairly light trigger pull. They call it "Glock leg" for a reason.
Having said that, Glock lovers will tell me the trigger is all the safety you need. Ok suit yourself, but don't shoot yourself.
Glocks do not go off unless *you* fuck up.
I've owned and carried a couple of weapons without 'manual safety' - cue 'this is my safety sir' meme.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfAobT5F3qg
Glocking yourself comes from people using inappropriate holsters (typically leather that gets soft over time) and then catching the trigger because a fold of leather jams itself in there as you're holstering.
You also might notice that Glocks do have a manual safety - its on the trigger. You have to depress that before pulling the trigger back or else the trigger won't move. The sort of stuff that has to go wrong before a Glock will 'accidentally' go off shows how bad some people are when they manage to make it happen anyway.
Quo Usque Tandem: What you are telling us is that you are too stupid to follow this rule of gun safety: Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
That's not fair.

Salyers should have said he mistakenly thought the other officer was his girlfriend using the bathroom and then reminded everyone that he has metal blades for legs, like the assassin woman in the movie Kingsman.
He seems plenty dumb enough to think that would serve as an excuse.
S
Kingsman had it right; being beautiful and part machine should literally grant you a license to kill. Unfortunately some more primitive societies--such as the South Africans, a famously peaceful and easygoing people--remain rather more rigid and unaccommodating about such matters. I can see they still have a long way to go as a country.
being beautiful and part machine should literally grant you a license to kill.
Even Saudi Arabia now issues women driver's licenses, amiright?
Eh, he's probably not dumb enough to think anyone will believe his story. More he's got nothing left to lose by lying. It was a bad shot, and I was paranoid about being attacked in my home, won't get him out of losing his job or going to jail. So he might as well try to lie and see if he gets lucky.
When you are transferring a gun from one hand to the other, it is always done with the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, usually at the floor. It would never be done in a way where the gun could fire through a door at the height where a human would be fatally hit.
Something was going on - - - - - -
And without your finger on the trigger.
I spent years of intense training to be able to open my front door with my off hand to avoid this situation. I also shoot better with my dominant hand.
Even cops do not seem to have much of a record of shooting innocent civilians out the door of their own home. So when the victim just happens to accidentally turn out to be a friend from work...yeah.
Was there ever a court ruling saying cops can't shoot people on the other side of their door?
There certainly isn't a court ruling that this cop can't shoot that person through that door with that gun.

I suspect alcohol was involved.
If we'd only kept Prohibition...
I suspect the demise of adultery laws may have been even more relevant to this particular incident.
(Or perhaps sodomy laws. Who knows with these two.)
The sergeant says he told Salyers that shooting someone before he had identified them and confirmed that they were a threat would be reckless and negligent.
Bullshit it is, Sarge. And I have that on what literally may be the highest authority in the country. All this dumb cop needed to do was have the patience to wait a few months before this becomes the officially sanctioned home defense technique in the United States.
How’d that guy get to be a sergeant spouting nonsense like it being reckless and negligent to shoot before identifying a threat? Don’t they teach literally the opposite at the police academy? I’ll bet the shooter’s union rep is furious at him for fogetting to invoke the holy words, “I feared for my life.”
Still doesn't explain why he fired 26 shots.
He was at home. He only carried 1 spare mag with him.

How many people answer the door with a gun in their hand at 7:12 pm? If it doesn't make sense, it's probably not true.
I don't know how many, but I do know people who do.
I wonder what else is on this cop's records? Most cops could fear that the unidentified person at their door is after revenge, but maybe he has more to fear than most.

But rememeber - cops are highly trained professionals and so are the only ones competent enough to carry firearms.
I mean, a cop, who normally is utterly beyond the law, would never just shoot a man through the door just to watch him die. But at the same time, the cop, who is highly trained in firearms use, would never have his FUCKING FINGER ON THE TRIGGER until he was ready to fire.
Guns don't shoot themselves. Genuine accidents (where the gun malfunctions) are almost non-existent today and 'negligent discharges' start with a chain of stupid decisions by the person with the gun.
