NYPD Cops Claimed Shake Shack Employees Put Bleach in Their Milkshakes. An NYPD Investigation Found Otherwise.

Cops have a long history of thinking fast food workers are out to get them.

On Monday night, three New York Police Department (NYPD) officers ended up in Bellevue Hospital claiming they had been poisoned. They claimed a Shake Shack employee had put bleach in their milkshakes.

The law enforcement community exploded. The Police Benevolent Association—the largest NYPD union—said that cops were "under attack." The Detectives' Endowment Association—the second-largest union in the city—characterized the incident as "intentional." And an article in police magazine Law Enforcement Today rebuked Shake Shack for declaring its support for Black Lives Matter just weeks before the alleged incident took place.

Now, police advocates are quietly walking back their claims of wrongdoing after an NYPD investigation concluded "no criminality by Shake Shack's employees." It is still unknown how the milkshakes were contaminated. The most likely explanation appears to be leakage from improperly cleaned machinery ending up in their drinks accidentally.

The threats cops face rarely come from fast-food workers tampering with their meals, despite their insistence.

In 2017, One New Jersey cop mistook a "P~"—for "plain pizza and garlic knots"—on another customer's order as "pig" and launched a boycott against the restaurant.

In another case, a police officer in Indianapolis alleged that a McDonald's employee had taken a bite of his McChicken sandwich, before remembering later that month that he himself had started eating it.

An officer in Florida thought that a Burger King employee had placed dirt on his burger. The mystery additive was later revealed to be seasoning.

The Raleigh Police Department called out Smithfield's Chicken 'n' Bar-B-Q on Facebook after workers allegedly taunted them with expletives. The employees were fully exonerated by video evidence.

In times of protest, these allegations become all the more ridiculous.

For instance, during protests in Portland in 2019, police claimed publicly that milkshakes filled with Quikrete, a fast-drying cement, were being thrown at protesters, despite eventually admitting there was no evidence of this.

Just two weeks ago, an internal NYPD memo warned officers that blocks of concrete disguised as tubs of ice cream were near a protest site. Twitter users pointed out that this is a common method of checking concrete mixes.

It's true that many Americans are unhappy with and distrustful of law enforcement. Considering the violence many police officers feel entitled to visit on suspected criminals and peaceful protesters, they might operate under the impression that everyone else in America is equally capable of returning the misanthropy. In the cases above, that thankfully wasn't true.

Maybe if the cops coupled their outcry with an end to the nuclear family and a collectivization of all civic life, they'd get more sympathy from the media.

Fry cook I know seasons any officer's dish with roaches. Pizza restaurant keeps special dough for officer's used to clean the bathrooms.

I have no idea how widespread such practices are, but know for a fact that officers are despised in certain segments, and that tends to show up in the interactions with police in the darnedest ways.

Oh, and be kind to anyone who serves you food. They may be complete incompetents and can't keep an order straight, but those are the least of your worries.

Why no, I don't eat out much. Why do you ask?

    That's way worse.

    2. Formerly Cynical Asshole   5 years ago

Yep. I wonder how many other people they made sick?

      1. Rossami   5 years ago

The answer would be "none". The fact that the cops went to the hospital does not mean that they were sick.

Yes, bleach can be toxic. But as the saying goes, "the dose defines the poison." It takes somewhere around 200 milliliters of straight bleach to cause serious damage to an adult human digestive tract. That's a bit over 3/4 of a cup. Diluted in a milkshake, it's going to take rather a lot more before anyone actually gets sick. Since you can taste bleach at far, far lower concentrations in the first sip, I find it implausible that the cops or anyone else would keep drinking to anywhere near the level that could hurt them.

        1. Trainer   5 years ago

We purify water with bleach. We literally put bleach in drinking water so it doesn't kill us or make us sick.

BTW, going to hospital is an important part of a law suit. When I was assaulted and refused medical care, the attornies that I contacted said without medical bills, it's hard to show "damages" when you aren't hurt badly enough to miss a lot of work. Also, the docs in the ER will give paperwork saying how many days you will have to miss. Always, always, always to the hospital (by ambulance to up the "damages") if you're in an accident that is someone else's fault or if someone hurts you. Cops know this.

"Cops keep falsely accusing fast food workers"

After reading the article, it seems the correct word would be "mistakenly" and not "falsely"

"The Raleigh Police Department called out Smithfield's Chicken 'n' Bar-B-Q on Facebook after workers allegedly taunted them with expletives. The employees were fully exonerated by video evidence."

That one, at least, sounds like "falsely".

If she wants to build her entire business around Trump hating, I have no problem with it. I have a strange feeling that she wouldn't extend the same courtesy to someone who wanted to center their business around being pro-Trump though.

She's shut down, reason unknown. It may be due to health code violations or improper disclosure of credit card information.

Why was Super Troopers so great and Beerfest so shitty? Also, I can't believe that greasy stoner in Super Troopers is actually married to Christina Hendricks! I bet her "snozzberries" taste like snozzberries.

      1. Formerly Cynical Asshole   5 years ago

I wouldn't go so far as to say Beerfest was shitty. It was no Super Troopers, but I thought it was pretty funny in a "turn your brain off and laugh at the sillyness" sort of way. But to each their own. The Broken Lizard crew definitely blew their load early on Super Troopers. Nothing they've done since comes anywhere close, IMO. Even the sequel was kind of "meh."

I wonder if anyone's seen that Tacoma FD show? It's got Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme (Farva and Mac from Super Troopers) in it but none of the others (I don't think).

        1. Sidd Finch v2.01   5 years ago

No movie of theirs is close to Super Troopers but for me this is the funniest dialogue.

Is there any publicly available evidence that the milkshakes were contaminated at all?

    1. Rosera   5 years ago

Now, police advocates are quietly walking back their claims of wrongdoing after an NYPD investigation concluded “no criminality by Shake Shack’s employees.”

Why are they allowed to do this? If they flew off the handle without any evidence whatsoever they should be required to just as vocally say how wrong they were. The damage has already been done to Shake Shack, why shouldn't the unions have to hurt their own credibility as well?

  11. Brandybuck   5 years ago

I still think defunding the police is a silly idea, but the stories like this make me understand the urge to defund them.

    1. Rich   5 years ago

And the urge to defund Shake Shack.

    2. Charlie Chaplin   5 years ago

What the fuck actually the point of posting something this fucking stupid in a community where everyone knows you and can read your decade long history of radical left wing activism?

"I mean, I think it's silly to defund the cops, even though I was advocating for literally killing them a few days ago tee hee". Fuck off you stupid cunt.

Look, you can't expect your front line law enforcement professional to wait for evidence. They have only a split second to make decisions.

  14. Charlie Chaplin   5 years ago

Ahh yes, it was pure coincidence that 3 cops, and nobody else, received contaminated food from a restaurant that puts out hundreds if not thousands of meals per day. Thank fuck for that! I almost thought it was something shady!

  15. jlr55nj   5 years ago

My questions in this regard would be:
    — Do the hospital records from Bellevue support that the officers ingested bleach?
    — Did anyone else have similar problems from roughly the same time?
    — Are these shakes made in a machine, and are they prepared within sight of the customers?

It may be that NYPD simply can't hope to prove anything so they are letting it drop, but either way, accidental or intentional, it's not a place I'm about to frequent, Bleach is often used to clean these machines, but if the machine was not cleaned properly, why wasn't anyone else sickened? Usually there is an SOP for cleaning these machines that involves extensive rinsing. Either that wasn't followed or someone is fooling around with the cleaning solution.

  16. crufus   5 years ago

So cops are paranoid pussies? They feel guilty about the way they treat people and expect to get the same in return. They should bring their lunch to work if they are that worried.

  17. mytjx   5 years ago

I've got an officer friend that's new to the police force and he told me, "If you see me change, I want you to tell me." They know the http://www.mytjx.com inside of the force is corrupt. They're just hoping it doesn't contaminate them too much to where they abandon their morality and reasoning because then they become scary to themselves.
