The Coronavirus Outbreak Is Exposing Government Follies on Many Levels
Most serious approaches to the crisis, however, are decidedly libertarian. They involve reducing regulations that keep industries from responding rapidly in an emergency situation.

After the coronavirus spread, left-leaning writers began declaring that no one is a libertarian during a pandemic. We all need collective action to save us from this frightening health risk, they say.
But a funny thing happened on the way to big-government Nirvana, as officials try to ramp up testing and assure that we all have access to vital medical and other services.
The first thing that state officials did was grab various executive powers to order us to stay at home. Now, the federal government is pumping $2 trillion in taxpayer funds into the economy in the form of various bailouts—something that might help ease the economic pain in the short term, but will cause more harm (exploding debt) in the long run.
These government responses grab headlines, but offer little relief. Most serious approaches to the crisis, however, are decidedly libertarian. They involve reducing regulations that keep industries from responding rapidly in an emergency situation.
I recently explained how the market economy—and its sophisticated supply chains—is keeping us fed in these isolated times. Now we're seeing that government is more of an obstacle than a help. Pretty soon, we'll all be libertarians during a pandemic. The question is why more of us aren't libertarians the rest of the time, given what we're learning about the nature of government.
Let's start at the federal level. As Reason's John Stossel recently explained, the Centers for Disease Control's COVID-19 tests were woefully inaccurate, but private companies were forbidden from developing tests unless they went through the long process of Food and Drug Administration approval. The Trump administration has temporarily waived those rules, but they left our country in a precarious position when a pandemic struck.
"The federal government regulates and monitors practically every activity that takes place in the US economy, from where and when truck drivers drop off their deliveries, to what tests hospitals and labs can use on patients," CNN reports. That's an eye-popping statement about the degree to which government controls everything. (So much for America being the land of unbridled capitalism!)
Because of the delays these rules cause, the Department of Transportation now is waiving restrictions on how many hours truck drivers can work. The Department of Health and Human Services is waiving privacy laws so more Americans can use telehealth services—allowing them to access medical advice from home. During good times, few people notice the burdens. They are more obvious when the chips are down.
At the local level, police departments are suspending the enforcement of picayune infractions. Some cities, such as Philadelphia, are not making minor drug and prostitution busts. Los Angeles is releasing some low-level inmates from its jails. It makes you wonder why law enforcement focuses on such things during normal times.
California state officials, however, have been resistant to eliminating the nonsensical rules that are making it tough for hospitals to treat increasing numbers of coronavirus patients. The state already has a vast nursing shortage, caused largely by the bureaucracy's limits on nursing-school attendees—something designed to reduce the numbers and boost salaries.
As The Orange County Register reported, a number of hospitals are discontinuing clinical rotations during the crisis, which will delay nursing graduations because students are required to spend 75 percent of their clinical education in a hospital. The other 25 percent is done through simulations. The schools are asking the governor to reduce that requirement to 50 percent. He has yet to give an OK, but relaxing that rule will reduce nursing shortages.
Meanwhile, California is in a minority of states that does not recognize nurse-licensure compacts—agreements that allow qualified and licensed nurses from other states to work here. Licensing rules in general impose steep barriers to entry for workers—and mostly are about established industries artificially boosting pay by reducing competition. They unquestionably create shortages, which create real dangers in a health emergency.
Sen. John Moorlach (R–Costa Mesa) has introduced Senate Bill 1053, which would include our state in a 34-state nursing compact. It's a sensible reform, especially in these dire times. If the Legislature were serious about assuring that we have enough trained staff to deal with coronavirus patients, they ought to pass this measure as soon as possible. Remember this when you hear lawmakers complain about healthcare shortages.
If the governor were serious about improving resilience during the current mess, he should immediately postpone enforcement of Assembly Bill 5, which forbids many industries from using contractors as workers. The law impoverishes freelancers during a time of hardship, discourages people from working at home and imposes hurdles on those providing vital delivery services. It creates a real impediment.
Government has a role, but a lot of what it does is harmful. We need to suspend counterproductive rules now—and then think twice before we reinstitute them after the crisis has passed.

Ok
So, those weren't "serious" reaponses, along with all the other rights crushing stupidity that's been implemented?
Nonsense.
"Serious approaches" as in "have a hope of doing a damned bit of good". So no, those were not "serious" responses to the problem.
I get that the ambiguity of the English language makes it tricky to learn but you should try.
Most of all, it exposed the general public's willingness to be roped into mass hysteria over something that is simply not that dangerous by a few poorly drawn, but well disseminated, charts and graphs.
For the record: had it, and recovered, in the ruin formerly known as New York City. I've had worse hangovers. Food truck tacos in Bushwick have made me more sick.
Absolutely, calling folks sheeple is an actual insult to sheep.
All kinds of issues as to what data is presented. One, is we only get total cases since this whole thing started in early March and in some locales number hospitalized total since early March.
Nice background info but really who gives a fuck about grand totals. We need active cases and active hospitalized.
We;ve actually had local officials lie about stuff get caught and then say well its for our own good.
"...Most of all, it exposed the general public’s willingness to be roped into mass hysteria over something that is simply not that dangerous by a few poorly drawn, but well disseminated, charts and graphs..."
Careful. Hihn will be here to beat you to death with a ransom note and JFree will wave his PANIC!!! flag in your face.
It IS dangerous. More dangerous than a bad flu season by any definition. Those pretending it's just like the flu are deluded, mistaken, or lying.
Yes, most people can weather the disease just fine. But there are people at risk who cannot. The elderly. The compromised. I have a friend undergoing chemo. To him Corona Virus would be a death sentence.
It's not like the flu because it's novel and new. We have no built up immunity to it. We have no vaccines. It's going to run through the population regardless of what we do. What we CAN do is slow down it's spread so the medical sector does not collapse under its weight (masks, beds, etc).
Fine, so you had it. But what about your elderly family? Your mother and father? Your elderly friends and neighbors? You don't give a shit about them?
I'm not sure about Trump's 200,000 numbers, but even a number as low as 50,000 is nothing to sneeze at! Holy crap! We've already exceeded 9/11 numbers. Brushing this off as if it were just a bad hangover is fucking nuts!
We don't need heavy handed government solutions, but pretending that nothing is wrong is bullshit!
Actually, 50,000 is something to sneeze at, in a population of 300+ million. The number of deaths on 9/11 in and of itself were not a big deal, either- it was more what the act represented at the time, and in terms of real, tangible effects it shut down a large portion of the country's largest city and commercial center for a period of time. But make no mistake, much of the 9/11 reaction was unfounded hysteria as well. The "world didn't change" that day because of the attack- people who can't do math and understand probability and risk analysis shitting their pants is what changed the world after that.
Individual cases are irrelevant, as are raw numbers like 50k, 100k, 200k... if a million people died from this, that is less than one third of one percent of the country's population. Honestly, that's not even enough to raise my eyebrow if they were randomly distributed across all populations and age groups, much less when you consider the fact that almost all of the dead will be from the oldest and weakest segments of the population. And yes, that could mean friends and relatives and loved ones for any of us. But that's life. Any other time in history, most of these people wouldn't be alive right now anyway. Part of the risk you run in making it so people can live unnaturally long lives (either due to age or drastic treatment of otherwise deadly medical issues) is that when the delicate balance of things keeping them alive is upset (such as an outbreak of relatively mild, but uncontrolled, illness), you have an unnaturally large population that is on the brink, ready to kick off from it. Sometimes you just have to admit that you can't save people from everything.
I predict that, after the virus has run its course or at a year cutoff, covid19 and the flu will be statistically indistinguishable.
That is, put up the numbers for Virus A vs Virus B and see how easy it is to correctly assign each
9/11 was also different because it represented an attack that, without some sort of response, could be indefinitely repeated.
COVID-19 is a virus. Like any other airborne contagion, it is going to progress through the population. We can slow it down and change the distribution of cases some but we can not stop it outright. And once it's gone through the entire population, we're done. You'll either be immune or dead. And if, as you and Under_Pressure suggest, the dead are only 50,000 out of almost 400 million, we'll be almost entirely immune.
In a few years, COVID-19 is just going to be another of those childhood diseases that kids get and recover from (but still dangerous to the unlucky few who don't catch it as kids).
//Those pretending it’s just like the flu are deluded, mistaken, or lying//
Bullshit.
Both my fiance and I tested positive, and went though it. Took her four days. Took me a week. Our treatment? Robitussin. Hot tea. Stay in bed. This was one of the mildest viral infections I've ever experienced in my life.
By comparison, I was hospitalized for two days in 2014 and couldn't eat normally or exercise without wanting to shit my pants for two weeks after because of an E. Coli infection the doctors believed I got from a taco truck.
I had the flu in Christmas of 2018 that damn near sent me to a hospital. I was sitting in an urgent care wrapped in a down jacket, and couldn't stop shivering. It took me three weeks to get back to normal. I spent New Year's on my couch, throwing up.
COVID-19 was a fucking joke in comparison. I've had worse colds.
The difference being they don't blast experiences like mine 24/7 on CNN, just stories about some half-dead geriatric that graduated to full dead and would have just as likely died for your average case of the sniffles.
Plenty more people are going to come out on the other side of this without any issues and when we finally start to hear from them the panic merchants are going to have to find new jobs, just like the millions they put out of business and out of work with their asinine hysteria.
"COVID-19 was a fucking joke in comparison. I’ve had worse colds."
Covid-19 is a cold.
//Yes, most people can weather the disease just fine. But there are people at risk who cannot. The elderly. The compromised. I have a friend undergoing chemo. To him Corona Virus would be a death sentence.//
So fucking what? This is the case for nearly every communicable disease under the sun. We don't have to cripple our economy and impoverish millions of people because you cannot deal with the reality of death on a psychological level.
My family members can make their own decisions, like the adults they are. We don't need to cripple the economy.
Let the government issue dire warnings to those populations; the elderly, respiratory illness and patients undergoing chemo, let those populations self isolate, fine. Markets (and charity) would react immediately to assist that group of people with basic necessities (delivering and sanitizing grocery packaging, medication packaging, etc).
Sure, lets shut down the best economy of my lifetime, destroy my business, decimate younger generations upward mobility because of .0003 % (from Italy deaths) of the population.
Joe Biden will save us all (if poor ol' Joe remembers to put his pants on).
+1,000,000,000,000,000!!!!!!!
But 50,000 deaths in the USA is an average year's pneumonias. This is a viral pneumonia. So if it causes 50,000 deaths even concentrated in one year, all it'll mean is that we'll know which agent caused that year's viral pneumonias.
"The federal government regulates and monitors practically every activity that takes place in the US economy, from where and when truck drivers drop off their deliveries, to what tests hospitals and labs can use on patients,"
You can do it your own way
If it's done just how I say
You know, I might change the thrust of the article slightly to make the overarching point more clear. The sprawl of the Federal government is simply too big to mount a very rapid and effective response. Why? Because we have allowed the Federal government way too much power and scope. When VP Pence says the mantra, 'Federally supported, State managed, and Locally executed' he is right. The leaders of the response should be the states, informed by guidance and information the Federal government can provide.
I really do not understand the latent hostility that is displayed on a daily basis by the MSM toward this POTUS, in the midst of the greatest public health crisis we have faced in over a century. That is unconscionable, and unforgivable.
I don't watch MSM, but from I've seen he's doing about as much as the limitations of his office will let him.
If he is "literally Hitler" then shouldn't we be asking "What would Hitler Do?"
Final Solution?
New York City does have a lot of Jews.
"I really do not understand the latent hostility that is displayed on a daily basis by the MSM toward this POTUS, in the midst of the greatest public health crisis we have faced in over a century. "
Educated, informed, modern, decent people recognize and object to self-serving lies; misleading bluster; recklessness; rejection of expertise and science; and lurching incompetence.
We all prefer the “if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor” types.
I hate Trump every bit as much as I hated Obama. Trump's only redeeming feature is that he's not Hillary, who I hated even more than Obama.
"Hey, at least he's not Hillary" is not sustainable selling point.
Nobody cares
"Educated, informed, modern, decent people recognize and object to self-serving lies; misleading bluster; recklessness; rejection of expertise and science; and lurching incompetence."
How in the hell would a pathetic piece of human scum like you have any idea what those sorts of people think?
Fuck off and die.
The Human Hemorrhoid speaks. Thanks Rev, for your ranting.
If what you've written were true and applicable to the MSM, then they should have been just as hostile to every president in living memory. The current one's far more trollish than prior examples, but in terms of policy, he's no worse than the rest, only in different areas.
Situations like these remind me so clearly of Asimov's Foundation Series.
Yes, that is true JesseAZ.
Yeah, let's not end up as Gaia though (rereading the series now; half way through Foundation and Earth).
These government responses grab headlines, but offer little relief.
How dare you minimize everyone getting $600 in the form of a $1200 check.
Everyone? Some might make a wee too much to get any benevolence from Uncle Samuel.
Despite them being a vanishingly small percentage of the actual population, somehow every person online makes at least 150k a year.
I don't know about every person, just my situation.
They're lying.
There is a difference between how much your earn, your taxable income, and how many perks your company provides you that dont count as taxable income.
"...how many perks your company provides you that dont count as taxable income."
Income tax law: The reason the medical market is a disaster.
California is pretty much fucked.
I get the government they voted for...
"The question is why more of us aren't libertarians the rest of the time, given what we're learning about the nature of government."
Let's see. To follow basic libertarian ethics people have to consistently provide for themselves, accept responsibility and consequences, and resist telling others what to do.
And what do most humans do? Some are more than eager to take charge of others, whether "for their own good" or just to amass power. Many are afraid of a reality where they have personal responsibility. Almost nobody likes consequences, good or bad, and prefers to blame all outcomes on others. On the left we have a culture based on victim status and forced, lowest common denominator equality. On the right we have a choice of proscriptive theologies or strong-man paramilitary mafias.
Get rid of people and libertarianism might just work.
Get rid of people and libertarianism might just work.
Nonsense. We don't need to get rid of people, we only need to get rid of other people. You know, the vast majority of people who prefer security to liberty and instinctively believe that some things are too important to be left to the spontaneous order of the free market rather than that some things are too important to not be left to the spontaneous order of the free market. Free markets are fine to provide trivial things like our daily bread, but certainly not important things like cigarettes and whiskey and wild, wild women.
"accept responsibility and consequences"
Not in Reason "libertarianism"
I wonder who else said "Just get rid of the people and [ideology] might just work."
These lockdown tyrants are fucking lunatics and their mental disease is really out in the open these days.
They wont quite declare Martial Law because they know that Americans will hang their asses from light poles. Instead they are nuking our economy to squeeze poor people into desperation moves.
This is going to end very badly for government types. On the bright side, there will be plenty of jobs when the economy winds back up and all those tyrants are dead.
Trump imposed the DPA against 3M. Hurrah!
Part of me hopes that they go full Galt and tell Trump to make his own masks.
Of course, they have US Army soldiers standing over workers forcing them to build the masks.
This was a deal by GM and 3M with the federal government to get upfront capital because banks wont lend it to them.
This is going to end very badly for government types. On the bright side, there will be plenty of jobs when the economy winds back up and all those tyrants are dead.
Why would you think this time will be any different? In case you hadn't noticed all this jackbooted authoritarian lockdown stuff is wildly popular. People love this stuff. They love hearing about what strong and immediate measures the government is enacting to take care of... someone, presumably somewhere. They're excited about their $1200 check and the only thing they wonder is when the next one will be coming.
I think that is the treacherous media acting like Americans like this stuff. The media were liars before this and made stuff up. You really think they are not playing the same game?
Many Americans are scared shitless. Scared shitless about getting sick and running out of money.
I’d like to agree, but you apparently live in a bubble.
Find any state that has its governor giving nightly “updates.”
The comments are astounding. Masses of people BEGGING for even more restrictions and heavy handed punishment for those who dare not comply.
The media and governments everywhere has successfully convinced people that the virus WILL kill them.
Here in KY we’re placing people only SUSPECTED of having the virus under forceful house arrest. Meanwhile they’re sending positive tested people home.
Who is begging for their financial ruin? Not all the people telling the government to fuck off.
Its the media lying about polls again, just like around election 2016 and 2018. They are fucking liars.
Kentucky. Kentucky is Blue and run by Democrats and RINOs evidently. McConnell is spineless except Trump gave him some lead balls to borrow during Trump’s 8 year presidency. Rand Paul got his ass kicked by a Lefty neighbor over some compost pile.
But yeah saw the Kentucky ankle tracker bullshit. I would never let fucking cops onto my property without a warrant. Im not letting some judge order me to do shit without a jury trial. If you let that happen, thats on your stupid ass.
Im heading out this weekend in my APCs around town to show that we will not be terrorized by government agents. If the AJC hacks are in the area, my family will probably be on the news.
Hell, PFT posted an article about Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant not observing proper social distancing, and to my disgust 90% of the comments were condemning them
Part of me is glad this virus is ripping through the Blue areas. It's gonna naturally get rid of a bunch of shitty Americans.
n00b...I don't know a single person anywhere that likes this stuff. You seem way off base when you say In case you hadn’t noticed all this jackbooted authoritarian lockdown stuff is wildly popular. People love this stuff.
People are dying. A lot of them. No one likes this at all.
Try talking to your neighbors, coworkers, people you meet on the street. It's enlightening just how pants-shittingly terrified people are of the virus. Easily 9 out of 10 people I've met is 100% convinced that virus is a death sentence and even if young people might survive it they seriously believe that if you aren't buying into the panic 100% you are killing someone's grandmother. Seriously. I've had people tell me that those ignoring orders to stay at home should tried for murder.
Maybe 7000 Americans have died by tomorrow. In 10 weeks. Thousands of Americans die every day from regular causes of death.
The main narrative at the end of all of this will be that government saved the day. No matter what they did, whether it worked or not, or whether the threat was massively over-hyped, government will have saved the day.
And you can bet it will come from both sides. Main-stream media outlets will claim the big government solutions espoused by Democrats saved the day despite the dastardly Republicans. Right-wing media outlets will claim that the big government solutions espoused by Republicans saved the day despite the dastardly Democrats. But make no mistake, the message will ultimately be the same; only government can save us, particularly if it's run by the right people from our team. And the people will lap it up, and the story will continue forever.
Perhaps, but in November, the voters will realize that "the government" means Trump.
#MotherfuckingLandSlide2020
#WhereIsJoJo?
Roughly half will. The other half will think "the government" means their Democrat governor. Confirmation bias is a very powerful thing.
Especially when perpetuated by the media hacks.
" But make no mistake, the message will ultimately be the same; only government can save us"
Only government has the capacity to implement a $US2 trillion bailout.
And it won't save anything. Especially future generations.
It might save people from losing their homes because they couldn't keep up with payments or businesses from going bankrupt. And future generations will have to solve their problems as they see fit, even if they have to return Alaska back to the Chinese.
It might save people from losing their homes because they couldn’t keep up with payments or businesses from going bankrupt.
The houses people couldn't pay for or the businesses that couldn't stay open because the government prohibited working. God bless the government! Only they are capable of making solutions to problems that only they are capable of creating.
"Only they are capable of making solutions to problems that only they are capable of creating."
As I said, only the government is capable of implementing a $US2 trillion bailout.
You can't blame the government for your choice not to own your house outright, or choosing a line of work that is vulnerable to these government ordered shutdowns. Instead of sitting on your ass whining, you could be earning as much a $US5/hour tagging photos for Amazon's Mechanical Turk.
"Only government has the capacity to implement a $US2 trillion bailout."
In true lefty fashion, the bullshitter trueman is here to tell us how only the government can save us from the disaster the government caused.
Why, if it weren't for ignoramuses like this, the government might actually be held accountable for its screw-ups.
Not to the likes of trueman! Let the government screw up just so long as it hands out some debased money!
Only the government has the ability to implement such a bailout. Nobody else. You won't deny it for all your whining.
They too are the only entity that can cause the circumstances that would prompt a $2T bailout.
In true government fashion, it broke someone’s legs, then wanted praise for providing crutches, all while denying the ability of others to provide that crutch.
How did the government break your legs and what crutch is the government denying you the use of?
This.
If there is any societal acknowledgement of failure, it will not be placed upon government in general. It will only be directed at one of the two major political collectives. This will simply serve as fuel for rationalizing individuals' desire to grant their preferred collective more coercive power.
Supposed to be a reply to Leo's original comment.
And it was, nevermind. Internets are hard.
I blame the Fed's inadequate response to something something... damn dems/reps.
No matter what they did, whether it worked or not, or whether the threat was massively over-hyped, government will have saved the day.
I agree with the analysis with one sliver of hope. People could run out of patience. We were bullied into our current predicament by a combination of sensationalized media, predictions made with both little and bad information and politicized policies. And for what? Bodies are not piling up in the streets and not until this morning has the pandemic reached 10% of the U.S. fatalities from the 2017-2018 flu season. If agents of federal, state and municipal governments push their luck and don't know when to stand down civil unrest could hit like a ton of bricks. Not sure if that is good or bad for liberty but it would be a well-deserved response to mass violation of human rights and setting the economy on fire.
" If agents of federal, state and municipal governments push their luck and don’t know when to stand down civil unrest could hit like a ton of bricks."
What do you foresee? The storming of the nation's toilet paper repositories?
"Pretty soon, we'll all be libertarians during a pandemic. The question is why more of us aren't libertarians the rest of the time, given what we're learning about the nature of government."
I question this conclusion based on what I see in social media.
The number of people who are demanding that I sacrifice MY freedom to buy themselves a false sense of temporary security is more than slightly terrifying.
You want to stay in your home? Fine.
You want to bar me from your home? Fine.
You want to voluntarily close your business? Fine.
You want to have the government take away my freedom of movement and association? Not even fucking close to fine.
"You want to have the government take away my freedom of movement and association? Not even fucking close to fine."
Even if you're Mexican?
I am not buying the suggestion here that a libertarian approach would solve the problem. There is a role for government and the current administration failed this big time. They needed to be there to assess and define the problem. At that point you can look at relaxing regulation to speed up where needed. It not that government failed to produce a test, its that they failed to see the need for the test. The reason we have such over reach on the government part is they failed to recognize the problem when a much simple solution would have sufficed. Consider this the State Department has been unstaffed and under pressure throughout this administration. What if they had brought in more and better data on this disease so that the CDC could have been better prepared. It not just that China tried to hide the problem, we did not have the people in China to realize that they were hiding a problem.

"I am not buying the suggestion here that a libertarian approach would solve the problem..."
Lefties never do, which is the reason they should be the subject of laughter.
The Libertarian approach would have absolutely worked.
Back in January 2020, the government deny access to non-Americans who are sick coming from Asia first. Quarantine Americas for 14-21 days to see if they are sick. Then restrict air travel from the rest of the World. Domestic life would carry on with little interruption.
The problem with your approach is that the current administration did not even see the problem in January 2020. Up till March Trump was calling the problem a hoax. I would not agree with your suggested approach but you can not even implement it if you don't recognize the problem.
Trump has been trying to restrict non-Americans for various reasons for years.
We will never know because remember Jan 2020 was Impeachment circus time!
Nice one thanks for sharing this great informative post

>>Now we're seeing that government is more of an obstacle than a help.
this is good thing.
Uncle Sam, tripping over his own dick time and time again. Not sure how many here have actually been through a real disaster but I assure you after a few myself the government isn't going to ride in and save everyone's asses from their lack or preparation. You are on your own for who knows how long? These were their shitty responses to disasters in a tiny little area when compared to the entire country. Think they are going to help the entire country all at once? LMAO yeah sure and we'll have a balanced budget next year and the debt paid off by 2025!
"private companies were forbidden from developing tests" is not English. In proper English we say, "private companies were forbidden to develop tests." Even the King James Bible gets it right.
Huh?
Fake crisis...55,000 have died out of 7.7 billion on the planet as of today. And we have a crisis and full blown panic? It's all the biggest pile of cow flop in the history of the world save the 17th century Tulip Mania, perhaps. It's the last gasp of the insane Marxists who are squirming in their death throes like the squished cockroaches they are.
Coronavirus is very dangerous, but I believe you will! win.https://gamebug.net/play/happy-wheels
