The Arizona Department of Education inadvertently released the names, email addresses and other personal information of the nearly 7,000 parents whose children take part in a state education voucher program. The release included the disabilities listed for children with special needs. The Arizona Capitol Times reports the spreadsheet had this information redacted, but when journalists copied the document into a text reader all of the information was visible. Local media as well as a group opposed to vouchers received the information.

The Department takes student privacy very seriously and any characterization suggesting that the Department furnished unredacted student data would be an actionable misrepresentation…

If the “breach” went to the media and to a group “opposed to vouchers”, that doesn’t sound like a “breach” so much as a “leak”. A deliberate leak to make the voucher program look bad. Look inwards. Just sayin’…

Turns out that when you fill in cells in your spreadsheet with black, the text is still under there somewhere.

I am always amazed when I run across someone who actually thinks this.

I can understand people thinking that if they delete the text it is gone (usually it is, but not always). But thinking the color of the text and cell hides the cell is to betray a fundamental understanding of how spreadsheets work.

To be safe you need to fill with black, print it out, then scan it in as a pdf and convert to text. Then import back into a spreadsheet. This could require some manual modifications if you didn’t format your sheet properly.
