Professor Punished for Teaching Students About Badly Worded Holocaust Poll
"We must remain—especially now—vigilant to any form of discrimination," said National Louis University in a dumb statement.

National Louis University relieved a professor of teaching duties for the rest of the semester after students complained about an assignment that appeared to question whether the Holocaust actually happened. In reality, it did no such thing.
The student backlash stemmed from a misunderstanding of the assignment—a misunderstanding that media outlets covering this case seem to share. Let me explain.
The unnamed marketing professor wanted students to ponder some very badly worded questions as a cautionary tale about the harms of double negatives. Here was one example used: Does it seem possible or does it seem impossible to you that the Nazi extermination of the Jews never happened? The four available answers were: Very possible, possible, impossible, or very impossible.
Several students found this example so outrageous that they informed the university administration, took a screenshot of the question for social media, and sent an urgent plea for assistance to a campus Jewish group. The university quickly sprang into action, suspending the professor while and opening an investigation. The administration also issued the following statement:
"National Louis University is committed to achieving a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where every individual is heard, respected, valued and welcomed.
Every day, we strive to create a community where everyone is empowered to live their full authentic selves. We are taking this incident seriously. We do not tolerate discrimination in any form and have a no retaliation policy for individuals who file claims of discrimination. We are currently investigating and will determine the appropriate course of action once our investigation is complete."
The Anti-Defamation League applauded the university's actions and bashed the professor for "trivializing the traumatic history of the Holocaust."
But here's one very clarifying detail: The question comes from an actual, real-life poll conducted in 1992 by the American Jewish Committee. The question was very poorly worded, and thus produced a suspiciously high rate of Holocaust denial: 22 percent. When the confusing wording was eliminated, the rate of Holocaust denial dropped to 1 percent, with 8 percent unsure.
I presume that this was the point of the professor's lesson: Precise language is important because misunderstandings can skew results and lead to bad public policy. Must we erase from history the fact that a Jewish group once inadvertently inflated the number of Holocaust deniers, because in 2019 some students are too sensitive to even grapple with context?
Both Inside Higher Ed and NBC Chicago mentioned the question's historical relevance but did not argue that this was an acquitting detail. Here's Inside Higher Ed:
Deborah Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University and author of Denying the Holocaust and Antisemitism: Here and Now, among other books about the Holocaust, said the professor's first statement appeared to be one infamously included in a 1992 Roper poll for the American Jewish Committee. The poll turned up a surprisingly number of Holocaust deniers because people didn't understand the question. A reworded polling question showed many fewer deniers just two years later—hence the 22 percent and 9 percent notes next to each question on the assignment.
Nevertheless, Lipstadt said it wasn't a "wise choice on the professor's part" to use that example, "especially in today's atmosphere." Doing so, she said, suggests that the issue "is open to debate, which it is not."
Historians of the Holocaust debate many things, Lipstadt said: Whose idea it was, how early did Adolf Hitler have it in mind, would a stronger response earlier on from other nations have given the Nazis pause? But debating whether or not the Holocaust actually happened—as some still do—is "ludicrous."
Lipstadt said the Holocaust is the most extensively documented genocide in the world and that everyone involved, including survivors, bystanders and historians, would have to be in on the hoax.
"The deniers have no evidence, no narrative, no witnesses," she said.
This is maddening! It makes it sound like the professor was denying the Holocaust when all of the available evidence suggests he was trying to prevent students from making mistakes that spread disinformation. If only they had listened.

So you're saying that the holocaust never happened? That's terrible!
Just like Reason to defend a Holocaust denier.
*smdh*
Washington Post Headline: "Libertarians and the Alt-Right: Why Libertarian Publications Defend Holocaust-Denying Narratives."
"Echoing the toxic rhetoric of Alt-Right Founder Richard Spencer, far-right extremist and libertarian publications routinely seek to normalize holocaust-denying rhetoric in a harsh reaction against calls for self-reflection on white privilege and colonial marginalization. In this latest instance, Koch-funded Reason Magazine's Robby Soave, longtime critic of the Diversity and Inclusion movement and defender of the White Patriarchy (who doesn't even have a journalism degree from Columbia) takes an entirely-unnecessary stand for the privileged white professor to defend his right to traumatize his students and normalize white supremacist narratives. Do we need a clearer example of the mask slipping?"
The sophistry and rhetoric are strong in this one.
^this.
Also did anyone else feel that the US school systems are totally failing to do their jobs? How did any university level students get there with such low comprehension and an inability to read and understand a double negative?
One word: progtards.
Only under the Trump regime could this happen.
His rhetoric has emboldened history professors

Something something pipeline.
There were far more nationalities and religions in concentration camps who perished as well, millions of them. There are no memorials to them, hollywood makes no movies about them, there are no museum to remember them. My mother was one of them. Almost died of starvation. By the way, the Germans did not go after Jews as their primary target. In the Eastern European countries they invaded, they executed anyone who was part of or related to the communist party, on the spot. My uncle's wife was killed when she was found and a week later my uncle was executed as well. Please remember all who died in those concentration camps. Many thousands of concentration camp laborers died from Allied bombing raids.
A bit more than half of those killed in concentration camps were Jews.
The groups Germans killed were pretty much the same groups the US and other countries forcibly sterilized: they all went by the progressive playbook of eugenics.

Where's Misek the stormfag to answer this for us?
I expected him to be all over this. Must be on vacation visiting SS memorials.
He’s prob probably fishing the secret nazi base in Argentina.
He’s at Camp Roehm for a few months, introducing new recruits to the dominance hierarchy of his favorite movement.

The real hoax is the fact that the Nazis killed only about a million Jews at the most in the death camps, but more likely 500,000-750,00...Heck, there were not even 6 million Jews in all of Europe at that time!...The real facts are out there & now backed up by the Red Cross stats which came out recently!!
So, essentially, The Holocaust as it taught to school children as inviolable fact in 2019 & proclaimed in all kinds of museums & memorials, etc...DID NOT REALLY HAPPEN!!!
Your link to the Red Cross site that shows these stats is missing. Curious, no?

So, as a fucking scumbag anti-semite, you post a link to another fucking scumbag anti-semite and garnish you idiocy with "LOL!!!!"?
Oh, goody.
Stuff it up your ass, you pathetic excuse for humanity, and may some one who is Jewish forever make you sorry.
Teddy, don’t be a cuck(did I use that correctly?) for those antsemites all your life FFS.
Misek, the Nazis killed a million rolling thru the Ukraine. I’ve shown you the pictures of the mobile death squads, the mass graves, etc

"Every day, we strive to create a community where everyone is empowered to live their full authentic selves."
No matter how douchey those selves may be.
How strongly do you agree with the statement: "College and university administrators are not in the least retarded"?
(a) Strongly agree
(b) Agree somewhat
(c) Neutral
(d) Somewhat disagree
(e) Strongly disagree
(f) "Hey, are you making fun of us? You're fired!"
Full retard, that should have been on you list of answers.
(a). They are not in the least retarded. They are in the most retarded.
Hey look, Reason is joining the massive chorus of far-left Holocaust denial apologists. What a gigantic fucking surprise!
Did your "James Cameron" sock get banned again?
The far left bitches about nazis, while really being essentially th exact same thing as nazis.
Nevertheless, Lipstadt said it wasn't a "wise choice on the professor's part" to use that example"
Wow, victim blaming much?
"especially in today's atmosphere."
This is probably a reference to white supremacists or something, but it's more apt as a reference to reactionary, weak-minded students always getting their way.
This is probably a reference to white supremacists or something, but it’s more apt as a reference to reactionary, weak-minded students always getting their way.
^ This. I've even heard it put that way - "you should have known that using that word would bring an angry mob down on you, so bad on you."
Yeah, today's atmosphere where anti-semitism and racism are almost universally condemned in the US, yet from the way certain activists act, you'd think a race war was about to erupt.
Not from the direction they think.
I'm not sure which direction that is.
Not a race war, but we have race *riots* now and then.
eg,
https://www.cnn.com/2015/04/27/us/baltimore-riots-timeline/index.html
Although they didn't mean it, "in today's atmosphere" means threats of cutting off federal money.
College authorities perform virtue signalling for those with the bucks and not for the listener.
This example is beyond clownish.
The First Amendment is compromised, but at least contained to the realm of college. Where the next generation is trained to genuflect orthodoxy.
"Especially in today's atmosphere" means Trump, and holocaust denial means you don't believe Trump is presently conducting a holocaust.
Do you agree with the fact that Trump is literally Hitler? (Choose 1)
___ Yes, of course, the fact is indisputable.
___ No, I am a Nazi.
a reference to reactionary, weak-minded students always getting their way.
That's what I assumed was meant. I think you're wrong.
"National Louis University (NLU) began in 1886, when Elizabeth Harrison[10] founded the school to train "Kindergarteners", young women teachers who began the early childhood education"
It seems that NLU has not strayed far from its roots.
Really, if you can't get into one of the 50 state universities, or top 50 private universities, you probably need to think about vocational education anyway. Clearly far too much higher education is wasted on people who cannot benefit from a truly rigorous course of study.
You think there's only 50 state universities? My state has at least 5 separate universities.
CA has two entirely separate state university systems.
You only have two? NJ has a Rutgers system, a Rowan system, Trenton State College and Kean (aka TSC by the sea), New Jersey Institute of Technology, and God knows what else.
Wow. Is any part of NJ not on a college campus? Not that big of a state . . .
We prefer centralized simplicity here - two systems, comprising a total of 33 state universities (23 Cal States and 10 UCs), not counting the community colleges (115).
Beat that.
*looks at UA expectantly*
You blow us out of the water in community colleges - we only have about a dozen. One of them boasts both me and Kelly Ripa as famous alumni.
You blow us out of the water in community colleges – we only have about a dozen.
And that's just the official ones - it seems like most of the state colleges and universities also have "extension" programs, which are essentially more community colleges.
But, in fairness, in CA community college has become what you do to get the education you didn't get in high school.
One of them boasts both me and Kelly Ripa as famous alumni.
At the same time? Did you date? Please tell me you dated.
And probably the most notable alum of my CC is Brett Young, who I only just heard of right now because I looked it up to see if I could do better than Kelly Ripa. But he was still in elementary school when I went there, so we didn't date.
Alas, she was a few years after me.
But yes, let's go with the assumption that we dated.
Just "dated" or DATED!?
Kelly was a nice, chaste young woman who didn't do such things.
Who's Kelly Ripa?
Even New Hampshire has three state universities - though I think only one of them is any good?
Soave probably fits in better than Glatt when you're hiding in Argentina.
Overreaction no doubt, but something that sensitive sounds like it would have worked much better as an in-class discussion, leading with the fact it was used in a real survey decades ago and gave bad results. Without context it could definitely be concerning.
Based on this story, it seems that the entire context of the question didn't even matter. Knowing the backstory of this question didn't matter. The university acknowledged both and still said, "We have to protect the children from this kind of controversy. For the children."
This is a big part of why I left academia in 2005. This kind of thing was starting to really get going, and that's exactly the kind of example I would have used to emphasize the importance of clarity.
I taught chemistry, so it wasn't nearly as bad, but there was still a sort of a current in the air. It was more of a thing where all the hard science folks tried to keep their heads down and avoid getting noticed by the diversity council. Particularly those poor, mostly male physicists - they do everything short of promise a pony to any girl who wants to get a PhD in physics and they still couldn't get very many. Anyway, I hated academia and was glad to get out, but at least in my case it had more to do with leaving a culture of politics and ego-fueled sniping to enter the world of business (that shining bastion of meritocracy . . . lol.)
"For the Children ... and our salaries."
"For the children." We must preserve their ignorance (and our phoney-baloney jobs).
""We must remain—especially now—vigilant to any form of discrimination," said National Louis University in a dumb statement."
Reason's use of words like "dumb", "jerk", "fascist" in an opening statement does not speak well for an unbiased article
No offense, but it's not the kind of behavior that needs an unbiased treatment.
The problem isn’t bias, it’s the use of emotionally charged language.
If a bunch of people act like complete fucking retards, and I call them complete fucking retards, do you pipe up with commentary on my "bias"?
Well, good thing it wasn't supposed to be a piece of unbiased reporting. It's a blog post. You may have noticed that many publications, including reason, often publish opinion pieces.
Reason’s use of words like “dumb”, “jerk”, “fascist” in an opening statement does not speak well for an unbiased article
It's way better than the factual rundowns of congressional testimony that factually demonstrate that only non-libertarians, backwards thinking alt-right conservatives, and those factually opposed to liberty wouldn't believe Comey, Mueller, Blasey-Ford, Schiff, etc., etc., etc.
What if it’s an article about the Jerk Store?
Obviously the professor erred by not following the Holocaust question with: " Does it seem possible or does it seem impossible to you that the previous question comes from an actual, real-life poll conducted in 1992 by the American Jewish Committee?"
Is it possible the professor explained his intent on using that example poorly? Maybe he assumed his audience had better comprehension of logic than they actually do.
True; it's not like they are literate high school graduates selected for higher education because they have a deep rooted desire to expand their minds.
Considering that anti-semitism is extremely common among college professors, is it really a stretch to think a professor would have some sort of ulterior motive? It's actually amazing that students complained about it, actually
I suppose that possibility hasn't been disproven. Who has the burden of proof?
is it really a stretch to think a professor would have some sort of ulterior motive?
If you read the article and understand the situation? Yes.
History class:
PROFESSOR: In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany...
STUDENT: OMG I'm so triggered!
DEAN: To show our commitment to diversity and inclusion, we're firing Professor Cohen for this racist...
PROFESSOR: Hey, I'm Jewish!
DEAN: Racist and self-hating hate speech.
In addition to the potentially misleading double negative, some said, the use of the phrase "extermination" introduced another ambiguity, since not all Jews were killed.
A+
The 1939 translation of Mein Kampf that George Orwell gleefully reviewed, shortly after the painter of Madonna with Kinder ceased being the fair-haired boy of Britain's religious conservatives, used "extirpated" in a sentence about selfish people. In the U. iv Chicago translation published in the 1980s that same word was translated as "exterminated." Translations of that one book vary fantastically, and I have yet to find a compendium of news articles and whatnot published under the famous Christian altruist's name.
The other bias that happens in the question is that using a question with inflammatory or emotional terms causes the reader or listener to tune out the rest of the question.
For example a doctor who is explaining a test result to a patient and the word “cancer” comes up in the discussion. Many people will simply tune out the actual message and just say after “the doctor thinks I might have cancer” even if that was not the intended message.
I think that happened here for some of the students.
Good to know that these kids will never learn about survey bias now.
Mission accomplished, college!

You know who else blamed the victim?

Rand Paul's neighbor?
Jehovah?
The main thing that's confusing about that poll is that it distinguishes between "impossible" and "very impossible". There is no such distinction: if something is impossible, it's impossible, period.
I agree 110%
Unpossible.
like most unique?
Let's just lay this out there...
A *marketing* professor wrote a series of questions intending to show how double negatives can cause confusion. This professor could have written any number of different examples but chose to use Holocaust denial as one of them.
Perhaps the replacement marking professor will teach a class on how using controversial topics as examples, especially when other topics would be equally demonstrative, can cause confusion and harm your overall message--plus lose you your job.
Apparently an actual Jewish organization used this question in a serious effort to find out the extent of Holocaust denial in America. The survey format made it look like were more Holocaust deniers than there actually were.
But this is not an object lesson in the need for better survey questions, and students shouldn't learn about it because feelings.
By what fucking standard does this count as controversial? He's not talking about actual Holocaust deniers, he's not denying the Holocaust himself. He's citing an actual survey conducted by the fucking Anti-Defamation League and showing that poorly worded questions get strange results.
“Does it seem possible or does it seem impossible to you that a professor got into trouble for asking the question 'Does it seem possible or does it seem impossible to you that the Nazi extermination of the Jews never happened?'"?
Maybe the bad grade I got on a math exam as a freshman was hate crime--or at the very least discriminination. Will the National Louis Math Department regrade it for me?
When the evidence isn’t illegal to present and the audience aren’t bigots, only a fool could believe the holocaust narrative.
Examples of bigotry in a Sentence

I was wondering when you'd show up.
And what is this Webster's dictionary you're citing? Who is Webster? Wasn't his real name Rubenstein? Or does he even exist at all? Have you even met him?
What about Underzog?
"...When the evidence isn’t illegal to present and the audience aren’t bigots, only a fool could believe the holocaust narrative."
You.
Are.
Full.
Of.
Shit.
Lipstadt’s book about her trial vs. David Irving when she successfully defended his charge of defamation is fascinating. I have also read Beyond Belief, her history of press coverage and intentional lack thereof of the holocaust in the press as it was occurring is also an eye opener.
She is an excellent historian.
I get the point of the professor. Don’t think he did anything wrong. What happened was he inadvertently fell into a different error other than the one he was trying to illustrate. He could have shown the point better if he had used a question about something less sensitive and emotional like UFOs or the Bermuda Triangle.
Are there real-world examples of survey questions whose results exaggerated the number of Americans who believe in the Bermuda Triangle?
Relying on made-up questions when a real-life example is there to be used...it doesn't make the point quite as well.
And for all we know, there may have actually been intelligent students in the class who got the point.
There is a lot out there about the use of double negatives in poll questions. Either way I don’t think it is a big deal here.
It's not the intelligent students that you have to watch out for.
Wouldn't want anybody to teach how to think critically!
I graduated secondary school in 1971. I was taught that 6M of a certain religion were killed during WW2 by the evil Nazis, with 4M being gassed at Auschwitz. Several years later, but before 1980 I learned that the estimated 4M that were gassed in Auschwitz has been reduced to an estimated 1M.
“Poland has cut its estimate of the number of people killed by the Nazis in Auschwitz from four million to just over one million. According to Jewish media in Tel Aviv, “The revised figures support claims by Israeli researchers that Poland’s former (Communist) government exaggerated the number of victims.”
My question is: If there were 4M gassed, and then the number is reduced to 1M, where were the other 3M relieved of their lives to make up the "official" number of 6M?
According to the World Jewish Encyclopaedia there resided 2.4 million Jews in German-Occupied Europe. After the war, 3.8 million Jewish ‘holocaust survivors’ were receiving pensions from the German government. Tragically, the remaining six million were lost.
Norman Finkelstein joins others, including prominent Jews, in conceding that the holocaust is a criminal deception: the prominent Jewish researcher says; “Indeed, the field of holocaust studies is replete with nonsense if not sheer fraud.
According to the Jewish World Almanac, the Jewish world population in 1933 stood at 13,315,859. By 1938, one year before the outbreak of war, the census showed a total of 15,748,091 Jews. Residing in the Third Reich were 210,000 Jews, some refugees fleeing Polish pogroms.
In 1948, three years after the war ended, the census reveals a total of 15,753,638 Jews world-wide. In 2017 the figure is still under 16 million. Now, let’s repeat my question; how many Jews died in the holocaust?
The aforementioned explains the power of what Hitler accused the Jews of; the power of the big lie. If a lie is big enough and it is repeated often enough the gullible will continue to believe the lie even in the total absence of proof.
m
The aforementioned explains the power of what Hitler accused the Jews of; the power of the big lie.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you a prima facie example of stupid.
He's duking it out with Misek for the septic-tank dregs in the scumbag bigot competition.
I do wonder to what extent you're able to debate numbers before being labled as a Holocaust denier. If a researcher says it's closer to 4.8 million than 6 million, does he get labeled as a denier?
Not sure, but dim-bulb here is claiming its a 'big lie', so that pretty much covers denial.
Agreed. And, there are no Semitic Jews. The Hebrews were genocided in 70-73 AD, the destruction of Jerusalem by Rome. Modern Jews are descendants of Japheth, not Shem, in Biblical terms.
There is no evidence the Nazis ever ordered the extermination of the Jews. The Nazis were not the first people in Europe who wanted to expel, not exterminate, the Jews. Expulsion of Jews is common in European history.
The 6 million figure is religious, not historical. 6 and 10 are sacred numbers in the Bible. The figure 6 million comes from multiplying the biblical figure of 600,000
Jews wandering in the desert by 10. The figure 6 million was used in the Jewish press
Since the 19th century as an estimate of the numbers of Jews killed in different pogroms.
The Zionists need the Holocaust to defend the creation of Israel and the ethnic cleansing of the actual Semites, the Palestinians. The Holocaust Industry will never allow the historical truth to emerge.
Your entire premise is bullshit. There were several other camps other than ,Auschwitz
"I graduated secondary school in 1971."
The wording here stinks of Brit.
The Jewish population of West+Central+Eastern Europe was about 9.5 million in 1933.
"Does it seem possible or does it seem impossible to you that the Japanese Navy attack on Pearl Harbor never happened?" Sarcasm.
Teachers should teach critical thinking not opinions.
What part of 'marketing' confuses you?

Point #1: How was the question discriminatory? It took no point of view that I could discern.
Point #2: Not related here, but the school's comment - "a community where everyone is empowered to live their full authentic selves" - seems to discriminate against transgenders, males who want to be females in particular, who are not authentically the sex that they want to be seen as.
They want to discriminate against discrimination.
Not all discrimination though, just what they want to.
They don’t want to hear no stinking truth in the form of science and logical arguments, they’re bigots.

Just curious: are these retards more triggered by what they think is a challenge of the holocaust narrative, or a challenge to their mental capacity?
Those who aren't afraid to think outside the box, that the propagandists have most of us trapped in, should read this:
https://nationalvanguard.org/2015/04/a-jewish-scholar-refutes-the-holocaust/
Elevation of "The Holocaust" (there have been a lot of Holocausts, if by that we mean attempted genocides) to the level of the sacred has allowed organizations like the SPLC, ADL and AIPAC to put any criticism of Jews off-limits and done terrible harm to the cause of free speech.
You don't have to question whether the Holocaust happened to think that the pants-on-fire hysteria that occurs whenever anyone says anything that just, might, maybe cast any event or statistic associated with the Holocaust as anything less than pure, Holy, God-delivered truth, is harmful.
The SPLC? The organization that considers it a hate crime to not support the Hamas? Make Jews “off limits”? You cannot be serious.
These articles bring them right out of the woodwork. Did this get cross referenced in Stormfront or just make it to whatever #chan these folks hang out in?
Much of the evidence that refutes the false holocaust narrative has been exquisitely compiled in Nickolas Kollerstroms book “Breaking the Spell, The Holocaust, myth and reality”. People who value truth and reality, should read it.
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23629458-breaking-the-spell
One has to review counterarguments to consider them.
Before making up my mind about this case, I'd like more info on the conveniently unnamed professor.
Why, but to construct an irrelevant ad hominem argument to support a bigoted perspective?
