Brickbat: Mistakes Happen

The Grand Rapids, Mich., City Council has agreed to pay $190,000 to Jilmar Ramos-Gomez, a Michigan-born former Marine, to settle a civil rights complaint. Ramos-Gomez had pleaded guilty to misdemeanor trespass following an incident at a hospital and was ordered released from jail by a judge. Instead, he was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He was held by ICE for three days. ICE said that Ramos-Gomez, who reportedly suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, made statements indicating to jailers he was a Mexican national in the United States illegally.

He certainly is a mental case - that "incident in a hospital" was trying to build a campfire in the hallway. My guess about him saying he was an illegal alien is that someone asked him where he came from, and he gave a sarcastic answer - but he probably had his VA card on him, which would both suggest that he was in the country legally and give the cops a quite simple way to check on his citizenship. If they'd bothered...

It was evidently a confession of Mexican nationality to the government that got him detained by ICE pending an investigation into his actual nationality.

He should get $0 from taxpayers. He is also lucky ICE didnt send him to Mexico City with $1 in his pocket.

I am sure reason would defend a person who confesses to a murder, is then detained while police investigate, and is then released after 3 days when its determined the confession was in fact a lie.

The attorneys say judicial oversight could have ended this because there was clear proof Ramos-Gomez was a U.S. citizen.

“I did go down to the police department today to collect Jilmar’s belongings for him and right there in his belongings was his United States citizen passport,” Scholten said.
