An Off-Duty Indiana Police Officer Was Fired After Needlessly Harassing Black Shoppers
The now-fired Daryl Jones: "I got my rights to do anything I want to do. I'm a police officer."

An off-duty Indiana constable has been fired after a video showed him harassing two Nordstrom Rack customers for being "suspicious."
Aaron Joseph, one of the shoppers, posted a video of the incident to his YouTube channel last week. The video shows Lawrence Township Constable Daryl Jones, who is white, interacting with Joseph and his cousin, who are black, after they finished shopping.
WHTR reports that the pair noticed Jones eyeing them inside of the store, following them outside of the store, and staring at their license plate in the parking lot. The men decided to drive to the front of the store in the event he decided to pull them over.
Jones approaches the side of their vehicle and tells them to show their driver's licenses. When they ask his reasoning, Jones says, "Because I told you to." He then threatens to call backup if they don't follow his commands.
In the video, Joseph and his cousin ask Jones to call a supervisor. Jones verbally refuses. The men continue to question the grounds for the stop.
"I got my rights to do anything I want to do. I'm a police officer," Jones shouts inside the car. Jones then calls for backup as Joseph and his cousin continue to challenge the stop.
A few minutes later, an officer with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responds to the call.
Jones tells the IMPD officer that the men "got a bunch of stuff" inside the store and then drove so that he couldn't see their license plate. Joseph and his cousin push back on the narrative, saying that they were just shopping inside. At one point, Jones even admits that the two men had, in fact, paid for their items and did not steal anything.
After a conversation with Jones, the IMPD officer tells the men that they are okay to leave.
WHTR reports that Lawrence Township Chief Constable Terry Burns fired Jones within two hours of watching the video.

Reinstated with back pay after arbitration in 3...2...
maybe not...i could see Indiana not being under the rule of out of control unions. anyone on the ground in IN care to chime in?
if this was NJ, i'd guarantee the guy gets his job back.
H.L. Mencken's magazine published "The Ku-Kluxer" centered on an Indiana Grand Goblin, and has a lot to say about the northward spread or the Invisible Empire in 1924. Ex-pats raised in South America have difficulty believing this sort of collectivism exists. The Wallace candidacy was a wake-up call, and look at the creeps attracted like moths to service pistols and qualified immunity a half-century later!
If it's anything like PA, constables don't have that kind of juice.
I checked on what the hell a constable is. In Indiana, only towns with a small claims court have constables and most of their job is running the court and serving summons. They have some police powers associated with that, but it sure has hell looks like these guys go to the 3 week police "academy".
I got my rights to do anything I want to do. I'm a police officer.
He is not wrong.
It would seem his former boss disagreed with that assertion.
His former boss might be the only cop in America who does.
He spent two hours trying to find a way around it.
Well, the firing of the police officer is proof that HE IS WRONG!
"With great power comes great responsibility",
It's too bad it's the opposite of that.
With great responsibility comes great power? Do you even think about what you say?
If they had to demonstrate the responsibility before getting the power, that would be great. Unfortunately, any demonstration of responsibility is too subjective and cronytastic to be relied upon.
I wonder what he had done to get on the bad side of the other cops?
He's been mentioned in Reason magazine twice in the same day. Nobody likes a showoff.
Probably had to do with being a constable rather than regular municipal police or a sheriff's deputy. Don't know for sure in IN but in TX the constables are separately elected from, and independent of, the sheriff. They don't have primary responsibility for responding to calls anyplace (sheriff covers rural areas, police cover cities) and the "real" LEOs probably think they're unnecessary.
In Indiana they mostly serve as officers of the court. So not really real cops.
I would have assumed a story like this one was too local for Reason.
It made international nuse...

Whoosh.
Yeah, that's the sound the toilet makes when I want your opinion on something.
Aw, you're sad cuz you looked foolish.
"that’s the sound the toilet makes when I want your opinion on something."
And seriously... That is what you show up with?
You miss thd point and fail to make sense, in the same thread no less. Are you very very drunk again?
I suppose you have a point. Such news should remain local, especially because it is an anomaly not a rule.
But you miss my point. If it made international news, wouldn’t Reason be amiss for neglecting to say something?
Daily Mail revels in stories about the dumb yanks and their dumber cops.
'I'm an asshole, I do what I want!'
FTFY.
Too local

I'm shocked there was no "procedures were followed" explanation from the department.
I wonder how the union will try to spin this one.
Well, he's a constable, not an actual cop, despite his claim to the contrary. So he's not part of the same union or the PBA, and they don't have to shovel his shit for him, thus I rather doubt they'll say anything on the matter.
There is a difference between power and authority. He was using his power without authority. Glad someone who knew the difference intervened.
Heroes are never really 'off duty'.
Oops, I meant psychopaths.
They don't just shitcan police officers for a single nonviolent act, who wants to bet that this pig has a long history of complaints like this? The possibility of an embarrassing viral video likely made this one this last straw, at least at this department.
The first thing I was thinking. This guy definitely has a history.
Today is the 5th anniversary of when I was assaulted and had to deal with the corrupt Houston Police. The things that struck me as the officer who responded to the call was that from the moment he got out of the car, everything wrong he did was very well rehearsed and he was used to handling calls that way.
The first thing he did was tell all the witness to leave and threatened them with arrest if they didn't. He even used the word "witnesses". He refused to talk to the witness who was watching the initial assault as she was talking to 911. He refused to watch the video of the assaults (I was assaulted twice and my daughter and an employee at the store next to ours were both assaulted once and it was all on video). He threatened to arrest my daughter and me when we insisted that he look at the video. He told me it was illegal to video another person without their consent and he threatened to arrest me for videoing him.
He did it all with the confidence of someone who had done it many times before and gotten away with it.
Jones tells the IMPD officer that the men "got a bunch of stuff" inside the store and then drove so that he couldn't see their license plate.
Come on, Jones -- you can do better than that.
"They claimed to be 'cousins'."
"I thought one of them might have been wearing a hoodie."
...
Where do you learn how to drive so the cops can't see your license plate? Seems like a useful skill.
Reason reached out to Burns for comment and will update this post when he responds.
Too easy. How about reaching out to *Jones*?
Faggot pig needs a hollow point between the eyes.
Get rid of public unions that protect racist ass-Heil-s like this. That fat slob cop was jealous because he didn't like the fact that the brothers were more intelligent, in much better shape and more real than he was. Policing is out of control in this country. Thank God there are some decent cops like the one that arrived in uniform. Sue the shit out of this power clown with a badge.
This cop should have also been arrested for illegally stopping people, the illegal harassing detainment of persons and threatening to confiscate their property
Go home Jones, you're drunk.
