ABC News Used Footage From a Kentucky Gun Show and Said It Was Syrian Warfare
Trust in the media is at historic lows.

Trust in the news media is at historic lows. Days like today won't make it any better.
During Sunday evening and Monday morning broadcasts, ABC News showed footage from a gun show at the Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, Kentucky. Except they told viewers it was a showdown between Syria and Turkey.
"We've taken down video that aired on World News Tonight Sunday and Good Morning America this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border immediately after questions were raised about its accuracy," a network representative told the Washington Examiner, which first reported this story. "ABC News regrets the error."
Tensions have indeed escalated between Turkish forces and the Syrian Kurds after President Donald Trump abruptly pulled back U.S. troops from northern Syria, essentially greenlighting an invasion from Turkey. "Turkey will soon be moving forward with its long-planned operation into Northern Syria," said a statement from the White House last week. There have already been reports of violence, including footage of Turkish militants executing a group of civilians and a Kurdish politician on the side of a highway.
Many say Trump's sudden decision was devoid of foresight, which made a bad situation much worse. Rep. Justin Amash (I–Mich.), a non-interventionist by all means, tweeted that the president "facilitated a disaster" in choosing this course.
"The situation rapidly spiraling out of control in northern Syria," said ABC News anchor Tom Llamas as he narrated the video clip on Sunday. "One week since President Trump ordered U.S. forces out of that region, effectively abandoning America's allies in the fight against [the Islamic State]."
So perhaps ABC was searching for footage—dramatic, explosive footage—that confirmed that narrative. Or maybe it was a clumsy mistake. Whatever it was, it shows how few journalists understand the particulars of guns.
Last year, for instance, the Examiner highlighted an Associated Press story which continuously differentiated between semi-automatic and non-automatic rifles, which are the same thing. Perhaps more seriously, "assault weapons"—a vague term that no one quite understands—are constantly compared to machine guns and weapons of war, although they fire at the same speed as other semi-automatic weapons.
Those mistakes are relatively small, though, when compared with ABC's latest blunder.

I've been around long enough to remember the news shows rigging explosives to Chevy trucks so they could get them to explode into a fireball when they did a controlled roll-over. Fake news has been a thing for a long, long time.
For reference-https://ew.com/article/1993/02/26/datelines-disaster/
You could also check "60-minutes" fake Alar scare, and Rather's whiny apology when caught with fake news on W.
There is a reason I rely on TV for sports coverage and little else.
See the fabrication about George Bush and the grocery scanner on the front page of the February 5th 1992 New York Times, which the paper still hasn't retracted or corrected despite being contradicted by two eyewitnesses (including the reporter whose pool report they "reworded") and the video of the encounter.
I mean, they managed to get an out-and-out "False" rating by Snopes, and still referenced the claim in their obituary of the man without managing to mention their "reporter", Andrew Rosenthal, fabricated it.
The Communist NYT will never, ever admit to being wrong. The only way to fix this is to do a financial kevorkian on NYT (meaning, dry up their financing). They are undermining the Republic with false and malicious 'reporting'.
Fake news goes back to the late 1700's!!!
They have a mission, and nothing, not even reality, can stand in the way of it.

Syrians = Hatfields, Turks = McCoys, obviously.
them's fightin' words.
You know you're hosting a good gun show/meet when the media confuses what you're doing with warfare in the Middle East.
It's the annual Knob Creek machine gun shoot; they do one at night with lots of tracers and explosions. But according to NBC, one file footage is as good as another.
And to think these news outlets want to get rid of these guns shows!
Having personally dealt with the Media at various times during my career, this incident does not surprise me at all.
If you accept the fact that members of the Legacy Media are no smarter or better-informed or objective than the staff of InfoWars.com, then these type of errors become less shocking.
And reporters still pretend to wonder why Trump's anti-Media attacks are so effective.
AOC said it best: "I think that there’s a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right."
It's simple. Drumpf's actions are morally wrong. Drumpf's critics are morally right. So what if ABC made a minor technical error? We mustn't obsess over such irrelevant details; the big picture is what matters.
#LibertariansForGlobalMilitaryPresence
I saw you in your sexxxy witch Halloween costume, OBL.
Nice work. Kinda creepy....
Some days you are really on point, OBL.
Accurate summary of the article
How 'bout:
'Facts don't matter; our opinions do'
?
It's always 5th Avenue somewhere.
Unfortunately Billy has muddled things here as well. There is actually one least vague, well-understood definition (at least for assault *rifle*), though it's somewhat arbitrary. That is, military-issue selective-fire rifles, which can operate in full auto or burst modes. Of course, that definition excludes all semi-automatics, which makes it clear how stupid the entire usage is in the popular political discourse.
Obviously this should have been a top-level comment, but the half page of ads covering the mobile page led me to hit the wrong button on the page.
Even more alarmingly, it's not even on the right article. Does anyone else have this issue with the mobile site? In which the site will spontaneously load the next article? It's infuriating. It has been rampant since the redesign.
Oh wait, that last one was my bad. I forgot it was a fake news article. But the general point about the page loading stands.
But the general point about the page loading stands.
Yes - it most certainly does.
I'm just surprised the page stopped jumping around long enough for you to type a comment.
Yeah, that one's bad, too.
That's why the term "assault weapons" was invented. It's almost like "assault rifle", but doesn't mean anything, so they can apply it to whatever they like.
Also: American gun owners possess enough firepower to put on a show that makes other people think that they are in a Middle East war zone.
Beta O'Rourke: take note.
How awesome is America when video of our recreational gun use is so violent that it can pass for combat footage?
Again, the Knob Creek annual machine gun shoot. Very very few Americans own actual machine guns. And they are a registered class III weapon per ATF.
If Civil War were to actually break out, many more Americans would own many more actual machine guns, registered or not.
Violent? They were shooting at things not people. No one died at the Knob Creek machine gun shoot you idiot.
Since we're indulging in pedantic nit-picking here, let's see what the dictionary says about the word "violent":
"1 a (1): marked by use of unusually harmful or destructive physical forces
(2): showing or including violence
b : extremely powerful or forceful and capable of causing damage"
You're welcome.
The newsmonkeys probably just wanted to spice things up a little. Most real battle footage isn't half as spectacular as Saturday night at the Creek.
(sees footage...scraps plan to invade Kentucky)
Start with a smaller, more docile state, like CT or NJ. You'd probably get their few gun owners to back you up, since a warlord is a better option than the governments they're currently under.
OMG, Yes = ...since a warlord is a better option than the governments they’re currently under
The shnook in schlub's clothing, Phailing Phil Murphy, Big Man of the People's Republic of NJ, is currently fighting with the Team D legislature to...wait for it....raise taxes! Surprise!
But wait, it gets better....The Team D legislature is actually balking at raising taxes as much as Phailing Phil wants. Which has now led to the most unbelievable spectacle I have ever seen. A Team D legislature arguing with a Team D governor to limit the amount of tax increase.
Phil Murphy was a foregone conclusion after Chris Christie's idiocy.
That said, Murphy is an uglier, buck toothed version of Jon Corzine. They even came from the same wall street firm.
"Regret the error" is what you say when you misspell someone's name.
A stronger term is needed for using gun-show footage and saying it's Mideast war footage.
"We really screwed the pooch on this one" should be the least they'd say. Plus "we are investigating to find out who was responsible for this fuck-up."
Dedicating a good 5 to 10 minutes on the next broadcast begging forgiveness wouldn't be a bad idea either.
Of course that might ruin the narrative they want planted.
I'm sure they knew who is responsible. In fact, they probably green-lit his/her decision all the way up.
“We really screwed the pooch on this one”
It's bad. But is it 'Gus Grissom sinking the Mercury module bad'?
Yeah, actually, it is. Gus was later killed in the Apollo 1 module. What is ABC gonna do to make up for it?
Seppuku
“We really screwed the pooch on this one” should be the least they’d say. Plus “we are investigating to find out who was responsible for this fuck-up.”:

They could just own it and say "dude, LAYERS of editors"
So, no explanation?
"We grabbed the wrong tape"?
"We saw stuff exploding and assumed it was Trump's fault"?
"We edited out the audience at the show and their cell phones so it would look more like Syria"?
"We thought we could get away with fake tape, even though none of the other networks had similar footage"?
You're assuming it was accidental. The obvious answer is that it was intentional, to show what happens when Trump pulls the rug out from under our heroic allies and acts like an isolationist.
As for Amash's criticism, I'd think the President might even be constitutionally obligated to move U. S. troops out of a war zone where they risk getting into an undeclared war with a NATO ally.
I’d think the President might even be constitutionally obligated to move U. S. troops out of a war zone where they risk getting into an undeclared war with a NATO ally.
Would Turkey bear no responsibility if they shot first?
Not this close to Thanksgiving.
????
Oops.
*Thumbs up.*
Perfect
Maneuvering into a "they shot first" situation is so easy that it could be an end-run around the Constitution.
"I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you!"
Maneuvering into a “they shot first” situation is so easy that it could be an end-run around the Constitution.
True, but in this case, it wouldn't be a war zone until the Turks invaded.
Say Trump decided to leave all the American troops right where they were. Does the Turkish entrance into the area look different? Or do they proceed with "bombs away, damn the consequences?"
You'd have to ask the Turks, but I think this is the kind of risk which should be authorized by Congress, and I don't mean Congress members waiting to see what happens so they can criticize if things go bad and lavish praise if they go well. I mean debate in advance of any trouble.
You're really desperate to keep troops in Syria and more importantly in near conflict... why?
Amash and TDS sufferers :"I thought you were getting our troops out of the Middle East!!"
Same people 5 minutes later: "I didn't mean now!!"
Which troops are leaving the Middle East?
More than any president the last 20 years.
good point Eddy, also there was never going to be a good time to withdraw since fighting was going to start as soon as we withdrew no matter when or who was in office so may as well pull out now and let the chips fall
"...black and white footage of emaciated Jewish migrants imprisoned at the Mexico border for not having the proper documentation required by Trump's immigration policies."
When's that going to happen?
How does that even work?
They probably used what they believed to be "stock war footage" for the news story. The hilarious part is how a Kentucky gun show can suffice for that purpose.
True. Hilarious that the media live such sheltered lives that they are this oblivious.
Hell, I'm a hick from a hunting state and I'd never seen anything that glorious (now that I've seen the footage).
Pics or it didn't happen.
It's a video clip you fucking retard.
"Pics or it didn’t happen."
Way to GO, turd!
"ABC News regrets the error."
They meant to take footage from Syrian warfare and say it was a Kentucky gun show
ROPE, TREE, JOURNALIST: Some assembly required.
Says a social media troll without the slightest bit of awareness
Yeah, because there are no instances of violence against the press in American history whatsoever.
Last year, for instance, the Examiner highlighted an Associated Press story which continuously differentiated between semi-automatic and non-automatic rifles, which are the same thing.
Uh, no. Bolt-action, lever-action, and pump-action rifles are all non-automatic, but not one of them is semi-automatic.
When you're laughing at the obvious errors of others, it's a good idea not to fall into equally bone-headed errors yourself.
Pretty sure his point was that semi-automatics are non-automatics not that all non-automatics are semi-automatics.
"ABC News regrets the error."
Bullshit.
ABC news regrets getting caught again blatantly lying to the public at large, and hopes you will forget this ever happened, because *points* TRUMP!
"...ABC news regrets getting caught again blatantly lying to the public at large,..."
Like Dan Rather 'regrets' being caught broadcasting lies about W.
Dan Rather lies but received an award for his lies showing it pays to lie for the cause
Professional media reporters and producers are lying cunts. Always have been, always will be.
Been a bad few days for the media. Let's worship them and cry over a meme.
According to neocons and war mongers, it's never the right time to withdraw from Syria.
or Afghanistan.
But they’re totally not the enemy of the people. Trust them!
Semi-automatic is a bass- ackwards term. The correct term is self-loading.
I have yet to see one that would load itself.
Pictures of actual artillery battles are kind'a boring, with a few puffs of dust off in the distance, and even less than that at night. ABC believes that folks want to see the Hollywood version, with big balls of gasoline flame and flying body parts.
Maybe they could take the New Orleans hotel collapse and edit out the construction cranes to show a direct hit by the Turkish artillery.
What's the big deal? It's not like ABC rigged a pickup truck to explode during a consumer report segment. Sheesh.
or when they cut the roof of a ford so that it would collapse during a rollover to prove how dangerous they are
Billy,
when the 'mistakes' follow the predictable pattern of being either sensationalist hyperbole and/or benefiting the left why do extend a benefit of the doubt where none is clearly due?
Do you really think that if you play along they'll let you in on the act?
Actually, no, they are not the same thing. Bolt action and lever action, for example, are "non-automatic rifles," but they are not semi-automatic.
As for Amash’s criticism, Like Aqiqah Bandung said, I’d think the President might even be constitutionally obligated to move U. S. troops out of a war zone where they risk getting into an undeclared war with a NATO ally.
How could this be an error? It was no "mistake"-it was an utter fabrication and the FCC should fine them heavily.
"Journalism": respond to major events. Diligently gather facts from all sides and present them dispassionately. Allow readers/viewers to form their own opinions. Avoid interjecting yourself into the story as it taints credibility. Accuracy is job #1, a functioning republic requires a well-informed populace.
"Propagandism": start with desired objective in mind. Diligently gather examples in the world that support your desired objective. Create news if necessary, interjecting self wherever possible to foster emotional response. Suppress mitigating points of view and present opposing points of view only in ways that discredit them. Creating anger is job #1, an angry viewer does not change the channel.
Great post. I like how your posts are written, well detailed and to the point... Bedescorts
