Joker Director Todd Phillips Says Woke Scolds and Twitter Mobs Killed Comedy

"Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture."

The new Joker movie doesn't hit theaters until Thursday, but it's already proving controversial. Joaquin Phoenix's version of the legendary Batman arch-nemesis is a frustrated, psychologically disturbed white man, akin to an incel or a mass shooter. Vanity Fair wondered if the film will be treated as "propaganda for the very men it pathologizes." A mother of a victim of the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater shooting called the movie a "slap in the face" that could encourage the next James Holmes. The U.S. military circulated a memo warning servicemen about Joker-inspired violence.

Now the director of that film, Todd Phillips, is getting dragged on social media for pointing out something that rings true to me: Cancel culture has made it more difficult for comedians to engage in thoughtful provocation, especially if it offends progressive sensibilities.

"Go try to be funny nowadays with this woke culture," Phillips told Vanity Fair. "There were articles written about why comedies don't work anymore—I'll tell you why, because all the fucking funny guys are like, 'Fuck this shit, because I don't want to offend you.' It's hard to argue with 30 million people on Twitter. You just can't do it, right? So you just go, 'I'm out.' I'm out, and you know what? With all my comedies—I think that what comedies in general all have in common—is they're irreverent. So I go, 'How do I do something irreverent, but fuck comedy? Oh I know, let's take the comic book movie universe and turn it on its head with this.' And so that's really where that came from."

Phillips is essentially raising the same issue as Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Louis C.K., and a host of other comedians. They all worry that the social media shame mobs are a negative trend, and give power to those who believe it's never okay to make light of subjects that are sacred to the political left—and that offenders should be shunned, silenced, and fired.

It's true that invectives against cancel culture are often too broad. Sometimes, people who complain about being canceled are actually just complaining about being criticized. Sometimes, the supposedly canceled actually profit from the controversy. On this basis, The New Republic's Osita Nwanevu has declared cancel culture a "con." (For a good rebuttal, read Jesse Singal here.)

Cancel culture is sometimes a con. Other times, it's very real. Ask Nimesh Patel, whose perfectly benign comedy routine was ended mid-act at Columbia because of absurd student complaints. Ask Aziz Ansari, who had to spend a year hiding from the spotlight after being lazily smeared by a now-defunct gossip site. Ask Kyle Kashuv, who managed to make enemies on both the far-left and the far-right, and was jointly canceled by both.

These are examples that come to mind because they involve famous people, but plenty of average folks can land themselves in circumstances where they are viciously attacked (and often do not stand to profit from those attacks in the same way that Chappelle can). The Carson King debacle—in which the canceler quickly becomes the canceled—should at the very least be counted as proof that this phenomenon is in some sense real.

Todd Phillips have the balls to say "fuck you, Woke Borg" and keep making movies ... cancel cancel culture

    1. icannotread   6 years ago

      In B4 he is cancelled.

      1. Fancylad   6 years ago

One day Suderman, Boehm and Shikha are going to immolate Robby for heresy.

        1. Zeb   6 years ago

Because they believe some things you disagree with, they must believe all things you disagree with?

    2. Red Rocks White Privilege   6 years ago

Phillips is only pissed about it because he's getting targeted. Same with James Gunn.

These people are instinctive special pleaders.

    3. Muzzled Woodchipper   6 years ago

This is the ONLY response. Tell them to piss up a rope. Sorry, not sorry.

      Fuck those scolds.

"They all worry that the social media shame mobs are a negative trend"

I don't think it is a new trend, but a new norm. The media companies are relying on this crap.
The interactions within a single site like Twitter that cancel culture creates is staggering. It would be terrible for business if it ended. This has turned into entertainment for people. Then media writes about twitter and then a second beast is created. If you give an interview then the beast is fed more.
If you tell them to piss up a rope and then you're hired it will be those that hired you that will get cancelled. The entertainment goes from canceling one person to the next.
Seeing as how most social media interactions revolving around a business are negative it's to the point where being on social media isn't a positive. You open yourself up to this. It's a lottery ticket in your pocket at all times that you don't want to be a winner.
If you have a twitter or facebook you're expected to respond. Don't let that expectation exist. Make your movie, release your movie, pay fuckloads for advertising, and fuck what the public has to say. Making sure the voices of the public are unheard to them doesn't allow the beast to be fed.

        1. Hit and Run   6 years ago

It's not the individuals making the movies or comedies who have the say... It's the parent companies who live and die by hashtag. The fear is the money won't flow if the twitterati are displeased (and vice versa). There appears to be some pushback for certain starts with a broad fanbase, but that's the exception rather than the rule.

          1. icannotread   6 years ago

If I was ABC I would put in my contracts that all employees must ditch their social media accounts. Yeah, a twitter feed is a great advertisement, but it can also cost you a fucking fortune if someone tweets about Planet of the Apes while on Ambien.
If you read the comments on Insta, twitter, FB or youtube for a lot of this stuff it is your own advertisements turning into smear campaigns. Take even a bad movie like Ghost Busters. It would have been more beneficial to not have accounts in regards to that.
Why in the world would you want the public to directly comment on your investment and have others see what the public is saying?

          2. damikesc   6 years ago

"It’s the parent companies who live and die by hashtag. The fear is the money won’t flow if the twitterati are displeased (and vice versa). There appears to be some pushback for certain starts with a broad fanbase, but that’s the exception rather than the rule."

...but there is, roughly, zero evidence that Twitter = money. It's the part I don't get. Do they think there are really THAT many tubby trannies to make a movie or show tank?

  2. Adans smith   6 years ago

Don Rickles would be lynched today. And Mel Brooks also.

    1. Echospinner   6 years ago

So would most of looney tunes.

I recall few years back they did cut speedy Gonzales from the show because, you know, stereotype. This mystified many Mexicans because Speedy was very popular there.

      1. icannotread   6 years ago

"So would most of looney tunes."

Most of the DVD rights to those have been sold so if you are ever at a place like Wal-mart and you see 3 dollar DVD's for old cartoons be sure to pick them up. They contain some of the most offensive shit out there and you can be certain WB will never release them again.
I picked up one with Superman and learned that Lucas ripped the famous scenes from Temple of Doom straight from a Superman cartoon. Got another with a black Elmer Fudd.

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

""Got another with a black Elmer Fudd.""'

          Or Elmer Fudd in blackface?

      2. EISTAU Gree-Vance   6 years ago

Speedy wasn’t the problem. It was the sleepy background characters. Always takin’ a siesta. Not cool.

        1. Echospinner   6 years ago

Like slowpoke Rodriquez the slowest mouse in all Mexico?

          He always won too.

Speedy was like a superhero. He always outsmarted Sylvester and Daffy Duck.

          Slowpoke clip

          https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wYi_hq2p1Ac

The siesta mice always survived. They were just ordinary mice doing what mice do. My dog does the same thing. He takes a nap in the middle of the day when it is hot out.

          1. EISTAU Gree-Vance   6 years ago

Your dog is not on tv representing an entire culture! Not cool. And not woke.

Haha. Not woke cuz he’s sleeping. Nyuk nyuk.

        2. Brandybuck   6 years ago

Can't make fun of a Latino stereotype. But okay to make fun of French Canadians with Long Jacque Shellac! Okay to make fun of grizzled prospectors like Yosemite Sam.

My ancestry is Danish. Why is it okay to make fun of Vikings and open faced sandwiches? I am so triggered. Vikings never had horns on their helmets you racist fucks! And they don't come from Minnesota!!!

    2. Juice   6 years ago

I watched a Redd Foxx comedy special from 1984 on YT recently. (here it is) It was all "raunchy" comedy acts, which included a young Andrew Dice Clay. Half of his act was bitching about gays, homos, and fags. It was totally unfunny. His other jokes were ok, but they were all his standard jokes that he told for years and is still telling. Crazy to see some early versions of the nursery rhymes. Anyway, what was most interesting about it is how unfunny all the acts were (except for maybe Reynaldo Rey). But that's the impression that I get when I watch most stand-up comedy from the 70s and 80s. 99% of it is just not that funny, even from "greats" like Richard Pryor or George Carlin.

      1. Conchfritters   6 years ago

George Carlin in Thomas the Train was funny:

        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KInxYm8EE1s

      2. Echospinner   6 years ago

Don’t know your age but it might be a generational thing like with music.

Rodney Dangerfield did some great stuff. Much better than most of his movies. Was watching a clip of him on the Carson show and Carson just gets floored. I agree about Clay he was never that good.

        1. Juice   6 years ago

Ok, Dangerfield is different. He's a timeless classic. I didn't say there were no funny comedians then, just that there were so few. Even the most heralded comedians of the 70s - 80s were just not very funny. I think most comedians now are terrible too, but it seems like there are more funny ones than before. Maybe it's just that it's easier to find what you like these days.

          1. De Oppresso Liber   6 years ago

The nature of comedy is that what was once new becomes hacky as other and less talented comedians copy cat. At one time, airline food jokes were original and funny. Now they are hack.

            1. Square = Circle   6 years ago

I took too long to formulate it, and you beat me to it.

          2. Echospinner   6 years ago

Hard to find good tv sitcoms too. Of the old ones some like Dick VanDyke and the Andy Griffith show when Don Knotts was on hold up pretty well.

Don’t know how to find it but I think Bob Newhart was a good one.

            1. Square = Circle   6 years ago

The original Bob Newhart Show was great.

Definitely the sitcoms of now are way better than the sitcoms of yesteryear, but that's largely because they have to compete now. There used to literally be a programming timeslot called the "crap slot" because too few people were watching to bother with something that wasn't crap, but you still had at least a somewhat captive audience that was going to watch TV no matter what and was offended enough by the crap on the other two channels to watch your crap.

Which is what made Three's Company seem like it wasn't shit.

              1. Juice   6 years ago

Definitely the sitcoms of now are way better than the sitcoms of yesteryear

What are you smoking? You're going to tell me that Big Bang Theory or Modern Family is better than Taxi or All in the Family? Ok, Always Sunny in Philadelphia doesn't count. It's an outlier.

                1. Square = Circle   6 years ago

You’re going to tell me that Big Bang Theory or Modern Family is better than Taxi or All in the Family?

Absolutely no. No, no, no, no, no.

Always Sunny in Philadelphia, yes. Silicon Valley, yes. The Good Place, yes. I would even say Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was better than most sitcoms of the '60s-'90s.

Things are more niche-oriented, but the writing absolutely is better.

                2. Zeb   6 years ago

But there were a lot of them that were terrible and are mostly forgotten. I haven't seen enough recent sitcoms to say whether they are better now or not, but I suspect that at least the production value and probably acting and writing are better than in the 70s and 80s if you look at shows overall and not just the ones that will be remembered in 30 years.

            2. Juice   6 years ago

It's true. While most sitcoms have always been shit, now all of them are shit and it's been that way for at least a decade. Yeah, Newhart was good dry humor. I also think some funny ones from the 80s are Night Court and The Golden Girls. There are plenty others that were just ok like Cheers, ALF, and Perfect Strangers. I'm sure I'm leaving out some good ones that I forgot.

              1. Square = Circle   6 years ago

WKRP went into the '80s. There were shows that were good at first, but went downhill - Family Ties, Head of the Class.

But yeah - when you think about it, mostly crap.

                1. Echospinner   6 years ago

WKRP was just kinda cute. Funny that sort of like Ginger and Maryanne, Lonnie Anderson was supposed to be the bombshell but I had a big crush on Bailey.

A lot of these shows turn out unexpected. In the Dick VanDyke show they had four big established actor comedians, him, Morey Amsterdam, Rose Marie, and Carl Reiner. The show was to be focused on the office with occasional scenes at home.

Turns out unknown Mary Tyler Moore captured the hearts of the viewers so they upped her role with more episodes about their home life.

                  1. Dillinger   6 years ago

                    >>>I had a big crush on Bailey

                    had?

            3. Ron   6 years ago

Bob Newhart is still on some channel, I watched it the other night since it was the best thing on. some of it still holds even with its liberal slant

          3. Square = Circle   6 years ago

Part of it is that comedy simply doesn't age well. Funny stuff gets quickly incorporated into the culture and becomes cliche to the point where no one remembers where it came from anymore. Then when you hear the original, it just isn't funny, because you hear it everywhere and don't realize that's where it came from (and even if you do, it's an academic point, really).

But yeah - Dice wasn't funny at the time. He just saw how much attention Kinneson got and thought he saw a formula (but that may just be taste - I never liked Rickles, either).

            1. Juice   6 years ago

Rickles is hit or miss. He could go from super funny to just cringey in 30 seconds. I think Jeff Ross is a better roaster and insult comic than him. I don't think Dice was trying to rip off Kinneson. He has his audience and I don't think it's the same one as Kinneson's. Their formulas aren't very much alike, really.

              1. Square = Circle   6 years ago

I guess I always just thought of Dice as Kinneson without the brains. A lot of people knew about Kinneson without knowing anything about him because he offended people. Dice struck me as having said to himself "I have no talent, but this guy gives me an idea!"

But like I say, I just never found Dice funny, so I've had to theorize about why people think he is funny, and the only thing I've come up with is "he says things you're not allowed to say."

Otherwise you're right - Kinneson and Dice don't share anything other than relying on shock value to a certain extent.

Oddly enough, the very funniest comic I've ever seen live was Rich Hall, who I had never found funny in any other context.

                1. damikesc   6 years ago

I'll note that Kinneson burned out quickly and his later stuff was unbearable. Drugs ruined him.

                  Dice always kinda sucked.

Eddie Murphy apologizing for "RAW" recently made me sad.

            2. joeyb   6 years ago

Yeah, I remember people being crazy for Dice and I listened to some of his act and I was like "that's it?" He was never funny.

      3. EISTAU Gree-Vance   6 years ago

Haha. Remember when Reed Foxx used to call his sister in law on Sanford and son “gorilla face.”On network tv! Man, have things gone backwards since then. Sad.

      4. Brandybuck   6 years ago

Andrew Dice Clay was never funny. He's famous because he pissed off the hoity toity puritans on the Left.

Redd Foxx is indeed raunchy as hell. Holy shit! But over the top raunch was all the rage for Blacks in a certain era. They got away with that stuff because the nannies that arrested Lenny Bruce wouldn't be caught dead in a Harlem theater. Also, Lenny Bruce was never funny.

So was Redd Foxx funny? To me as a white dude he's mildly amusing at times. But he was a hit with his audience.

        1. Roger Knights   6 years ago

"Also, Lenny Bruce was never funny."

I saw him live and that was my impression too—he was so-so. His record wasn't good either. But he said a few pennetrating and provocative things.

    3. joeyb   6 years ago

Nah, Chappelle supposedly took shit but it's just some idiots on Twitter. In general, people don't care.

      1. Zeb   6 years ago

I think you are right. People just need to not apologize and keep doing their thing.

  3. Sconnie Fella   6 years ago

While the social media mob that tries to get people "canceled" deserves all the criticism they get, ultimately they only have power if employers give in to mob. We should direct as much if not more criticism to the employers who fire people at the slightest hint of controversy.

The Carson King debacle—in which the canceler quickly becomes the canceled

The canceller was the entire paper. A newspaper doesn't just publish whatever its reporters write. It goes through editors, etc. But, my guess is that many subscribers did indeed cancel their subscriptions.

Funny how the woke scold movement coincides with what's largely considered a new golden age in stand-up comedy, which, in my opinion, rests almost entirely on reacting to woke scolds.

You know who were the real woke scolds? The fucking Christians. Life really is better. At least in this thread.

    1. Eddy   6 years ago

It was better until just now.

a new golden age in stand-up comedy

I mean, he's right. There are more new comedy specials now than ever. I doubt it's because of the scold culture, though. Although christians having less power to dictate what's on tv and film probably helps.

Bestrecent specials -- Chappelle's last 3, Bill Burr's new special, and Tom Segura's new one comes in distant 3rd place.

        1. Juice   6 years ago

There are more new comedy specials now than ever.

Whole bunch of Trump jokes replacing Bush jokes =/= 'golden age' of anything other than losers who refuse to grow up.

Yeah fuck all these cancel culture assholes.

When the threatening letters started to arrive, Albert Ponce stopped letting his daughter touch the mail.

Ponce, a political science professor at Diablo Valley College in the San Francisco Bay Area, and his wife didn’t know how to explain to their 9-year-old that her father was receiving death threats. “Only Mom and Dad can touch the mail” became a new house rule.

Each night after putting his daughter to bed, Ponce would peek through the windows of his home to check for strange cars or people outside, “precautionary measures,” he said, after an internet troll army had targeted him.

It started just before Christmas last year. Ponce logged in to his college email account expecting the usual: work messages, a few season’s greetings from family and colleagues, maybe some spam. Instead, he found an inbox full of vitriol.

“I might just take a trip to Mexifornia and sit in on one of your hate speeches,” read one of the hundreds of messages.

“Your (sic) racist, Marxist filth, you ave (sic) been noted and we all know you now,” read another.

Ponce soon discovered that his Facebook page and personal website were cluttered with nasty comments as well, and his office answering machine was full. Hundreds of people were calling for his firing. They slung racial epithets, told him to return to his home country (Ponce was born in Orange, California) and made thinly veiled death threats.

Disagreed. At this point, Brooks is more Legend than name or force of will. Keep in mind, no one under the age of about 30 has seen his movies premier in a theater. I don't think he's got the clout to keep it from degenerating into a contest to find the best woman, tranny, or gay black man to replace Cleavon Little. "It's true that invectives against cancel culture are often too broad."

It is utterly impossible to criticize cancel culture too broadly. It deserves to be nuked from orbit, and then nuked again to be sure. There is nothing redeeming about it at all. Cancel culture is a net negative for civilization; the most positive thing you can say about it is that it hasn't--yet--gotten anyone killed. But it will.

  17. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

There has always been a "cancel culture", meaning, there have always been cultural taboos and no-nos.

The only real difference now is that the cultural taboos are changing in real time, and people are getting caught up with it by having current standards being applied to past statements.

The solution isn't to argue against "cancel culture" per se, but instead to stop applying current standards to past actions. If making jokes about transgendered is now taboo - fine. But don't hold 30-year-old statements to the modern standard.

    1. Muzzled Woodchipper   6 years ago

      It’s NOT taboo.

At least not with the vast majority of people. Most people laugh and then carry on with their day. It’s the small minority of fucksticks that get their panties in a bunch, then get a bunch of other loser assholes to get their panties in a bunch.

      1. chemjeff radical individualist   6 years ago

It IS taboo to some people.

It wouldn't hurt for everyone, on all sides, to be more considerate and respectful about the lived experience of others. That goes just as much for the effete snob making redneck jokes, as it does for the ignorant redneck making tranny jokes.

I agree that leading boycott campaigns based on your own perceived indignities is a bridge too far. No need to criticize someone for making an Irish joke when there aren't any Irish around to be criticized.

Nevertheless, "canceling" someone out of one's own life is a part of freedom of association. If I don't like Bob for telling tranny jokes, then it's totally my right to cut Bob out of my life, even if Bob thinks I'm being overly sensitive about it. But I wouldn't demand that Bob get fired from his job over it.

        1. icannotread   6 years ago

"That goes just as much for the effete snob making redneck jokes, as it does for the ignorant redneck making tranny jokes."

You can't make jokes or light of anything then. You can't even make jokes about yourself. Think about it. Everyone has life experiences and they don't have to be based on their identity. Cancer, AIDS, plane crashes, and all the way to carbon monoxide because a girl's parents died because their house had a leak. Even if you don't joke about parental death just carbon monoxide alone can be taboo for her. Where does the line get drawn and why are a certain group drawing it for everyone else? How large does this group have to be?
Don't let them draw a line for you. Draw your own. If someone crosses it, well, that's a "you" problem that you need to work on.

This circling of wagons may explain how the guy keeps winning Bigly, and is actually assisted by the hue-and-cry.

  23. Echospinner   6 years ago

It’s funny because I was watching a 1972 John Wayne film yesterday. The Cowboys, great film if you haven’t seen it.

So I was wondering what the reaction would be if it came out today because there is a racial theme. John, somewhat reluctantly, hires a black man as a cook and to help watch over the boys he hired for his cattle drive. So there is the n* word sometimes and other comments.

Of course the character magnificently played by Roscoe Lee Brown, turns out to be a big hero and soon has everyone’s trust and respect. Still I don’t think it would go over with the chattering crowd today.

Incidentally he even throws a Jewish reference in there. One of the kids at the start proudly announces he is a Jew and turns into a fine young cowboy.

    Anyway good flick,

    1. joeyb   6 years ago

You know that just a few years ago Tarantino put out a movie that said "nigger" constantly, right?

Funny though that you complain about scolds yet make sure to censor your own language, slave.

      1. Echospinner   6 years ago

So what? So does Chapelle, Snoop, and many others.

Here is one Chapelle thing I like in his latest. “Why can I say nigger on TV but not faggot” TV executive. “ because you are not gay” Chapelle “Well i am not a nigger either”

There is wisdom in that. He is throwing it back on the rest of us for this falsehood.

I make my own choices depending on context. I am making a respectful observation about a movie when people were grappling with racial issues, a western of all things.

Did you ever see the John Wayne movie? Do you have anything to say about it?

Or are you just trolling my comment.

Say whatever you wish. Like water off a ducks back to me.

        1. joeyb   6 years ago

I did respond to your comment that a movie like that could not be made today. And I said sure it could. It's pretty simple really.

Notice though, that in the Cowboys only because the black man was a hero that things turned. It would have been a more true movie if the black guy just did his job like normal and never became more than a nigger to them.

          1. Echospinner   6 years ago

Actually hero was probably the wrong word. He pretty much does his job as normal. He is the cook driving the chuck wagon. He does not drive the cattle. He feeds everyone and keeps an eye on the boys. John Wayne in the film is a pretty rough character and he is a more calm fatherly figure.

I think given the time it was made it was more of a message of people learning to get along, live and work together. You saw this in many tv shows and movies of the time. Star Trek had that explicitly.

To answer again your other point. I will use offensive words if I think it appropriate but not if I think it would be gratuitous.

Since jokes about ancient peoples are acceptable:

Why did the Roman centurion cross the front?

He actually didn’t. He instead paid a Visigoth mercenary 4 gold talents to do it for him. The Visigoth was promptly cut down by a Gaul!

I think comedy is better now than it has ever been. I mean, if you are a comedian *and* a racist *or* a sexist creeper than you are probably having a tougher go at it, but i’ve Never wanted to hear jokes about being a sexist creeper. Do you guys? Is there a market for this?

There are not a lot of jokes out there about being a sexist creeper. The only ones I can think of were in “Chester the Molester,” which ran in this magazine they used to have called Hustler.

    4. lap83   6 years ago

      "sexist creeper"

Is that really a thing? Creepers are usually pretty equal opportunity with their creeping

      1. Echospinner   6 years ago

        Old one

Guy walks into a bar in the afternoon and tells the bartender to start pouring shots.

Bartender says “hey you look a little down what’s the trouble?”

Guy says “ya build 20 houses. You walk down the street. Do people say “look it’s Roger the builder” No”

“You rescue a dozen kids from a burning building. Do they say “oh it’s Roger the rescuer? Nah”.

Takes another shot “but you fuck ONE goat...”

  37. Olga   6 years ago

There is a balance. George Carlin (back in 1989) said comedians should not "punch down". Gays, women, the disabled and people of color are disenfranchised groups and making fun of them isn't really what a comic needs to do. You punch up making fun of the wealthy and powerful. However, Carlos Mencia made fun of many groups, but he took the attitude that he will make fun of everyone equally. Being a Mexican immigrant might have given him more latitude there as he, himself, started as an underdog.

Sarah Silverman said she enjoy Dave Chappel's recent special. She did not love every minute of it, but it is art and comedians need to have space to go too far and maybe have some jokes fail.

Now, I grew up in conservative Christian circles. They refused to consume most entertainment and media. They created their own popular music and books. Isn't that also a form of "cancel culture". Choosing not to purchase or consume something is part of the market. If the market doesn't like what you are selling, then you have to sell something else.

    1. I Callahan   6 years ago

No, Olga, it's not the same.

Creating your own content is NOT the same as trying to get the person who offends you fired, removed and ostracized.

    2. lap83   6 years ago

Gays, women, the disabled and people of color are disenfranchised groups and making fun of them isn’t really what a comic needs to do.

Did you hear the one about the gay disabled woman of color?

Ok, granted I can't think of a good punchline but I would at least give that joke a chance. The point is to be funny, not to coddle certain demographics. Racism/sexism/etc isn't funny in and of itself but if whole categories of people can't be within 100 yards of humor that sounds more dehumanizing to me than anything.

      1. joeyb   6 years ago

You should tell the beginning of that joke to a disabled woman of color!

        1. lap83   6 years ago

I might, depending on her sense of humor and the context.

Not if, for example, she is interviewing me for a job.

          1. joeyb   6 years ago

I'd word it like "Did you hear about the crippled nigger?"

You didn't have a punchline so allow me to suggest, "for once one of them had an EXCUSE to not get up and work!"

      2. lap83   6 years ago

        OK, how about an anti-joke

"Did you hear the one about the gay disabled woman of color?"

The Democrats built her a wheelchair accessible platform out of an old Aunt Jemima box and it broke underneath her weight, so she sued them for emotional and physical trauma

          OK, how about an anti-joke

          s/dead baby/gay disabled woman of color/

What's the difference between a truckload of bowling balls and a truckload of gay disabled women of color?

You can't use a pitchfork to unload the bowling balls.

    3. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

""Choosing not to purchase or consume something is part of the market.""

Totally agree. But when people try to cancel something, it's often prevents other people for seeing it too. That's not the market.

While Carlin talked against punching down, he would loath the cancel culture.

      1. EscherEnigma   6 years ago

So not being interested in a product or performance? Okay.

Saying why you're not interested in a product or performance? Worthy of loathing?

Yeah, this makes sense. Or are we pretending that "cancel culture" is anything more then Free Speech you don't like?

        1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

Not sure I get your point. I've seen a couple of people point out (not necessarily here) that Carlin was not for punching down with his jokes. And using that as an example that Carlin is on their side of the argument. I doubt he would be on their side. I believe he would loath those in the counter culture. He just preferred doing his comedy without punching down, and did so brilliantly.

          1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

            Counter = cancel

          2. EscherEnigma   6 years ago

Not sure I get your point.

You agree that withholding your own custom is acceptable, but are saying it's unacceptable for them to talk about why they're doing so.

            It's ridiculous.

          3. mad.casual   6 years ago

I’ve seen a couple of people point out (not necessarily here) that Carlin was not for punching down with his jokes.

Probably best to say that the comedian known for his 'Fuck the children!' bit was a bit... 'selective' in his choice of punching down jokes.

  38. EISTAU Gree-Vance   6 years ago

Hey now, what’s all this talk about killing comedy?Kevin Smith is writing Clerks 3 as we speak!

    Feel better now? Haha.

    1. mad.casual   6 years ago

That assumes he survives the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot premier in two weeks.

Not saying he won't survive but from what I've seen of the previews, it could go either way.

      1. TrickyVic (old school)   6 years ago

And there will be a new Bill and Ted's adventure movie.

        What friggin year is this?

The "Woke Culture" is blessing on our beloved socialist slave state.
For too long we have engaged in all sort of crude, sexist, homophobic, anti-socialist and vile jokes. Thankfully, the Woke Cultural changed all that much to the appreciation of all control freaks everywhere.
Hopefully, this Woke Culture will not only continue, but ensure all forms of free speech is severed forever so we can finally usher in the much coveted Peoples' Revolution and turn our country into the socialist slave state our beloved obvious betters covet so much.

    1. joeyb   6 years ago

I'm really enjoying this site, usually I get banned for saying nigger and faggot and tranny, but here on Reason we get to say whatever we want and they can't do jack shit about it or they'll show themselves to be total hypocrites. I love libertarians!

  42. joeyb   6 years ago

Looks like cancel culture has hit Reason. I'm being "moderated."

    1. Rufus The Monocled   6 years ago

I've used those terms here and didn't get moderated,

      Hope it's not true.

It really was a great place in the comments not too long ago.

Still. Much better than most places out there.

  43. David Emami   6 years ago

"The new Joker movie doesn't hit theaters until Thursday, but it's already proving controversial. Joaquin Phoenix's version of the legendary Batman arch-nemesis is a frustrated, psychologically disturbed white man."

Except for the "frustrated" part, when has this ever *not* been how the Joker has been portrayed? Has he ever been a fulfilled, psychologically-stable black man?

  44. EscherEnigma   6 years ago

So it's okay to "cancel" someone from your life, but it's not okay to talk about it?

  45. joeyb   6 years ago

Jim Morrison sounds like he just made front runner for the libertarian presidential nominee!

  46. joeyb   6 years ago

Remember when Blockbuster was still around and Christians protested them having NC-17 movies, so they wouldn't carry them? You act like they have had no history in pushing things around.

  47. joeyb   6 years ago

You're such an edgelord, man! SO edgy! Man, are you cool!

  48. EISTAU Gree-Vance   6 years ago

Haha. Yeah. I know atheists who think that white Christians are total idiots just for believing in god. They absolutely will not apply that same judgment to anyone else. Total pussies.

  49. Nardz   6 years ago

Eh, not all atheists (technical definition of the term) are.

It wasn't his best (he was a bit restrained) but it was damn good.

    I was lucky.
