ICE Is Releasing a Staggering Number of Migrants Into Some U.S. Cities

Plus: an unusually candid look at Marine life, proof we're past Peak Farmer's Market, "fetal heartbeat" law blocked in Kentucky, and CBD Jelly Bellies

Volunteers beg federal agents for advance notice of new arrivals. Over the past weekend alone, more than 300 people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials were simply deposited, without notice, in Phoenix, Arizona. Migrants seeking legal refugee status or other immigration visas, these have all been legally processed and have a family member or other sponsor in the U.S.—but not necessarily in the area.

ICE has released 14,500 refugee seekers in Phoenix since last December 21, reports the Arizona Republic based on ICE statistics. El Paso saw about 24,000 new residents deposited there by ICE in the same time period; San Diego, around 8,500; and south Texas, approximately 37,500.

Many are bound for elsewhere. But they have seven to 10 days to get to where their sponsor lives and report to a judge in that area. After being released from ICE custody in a particular city, many need temporary shelter and help with travel arrangements to their destination.

The groups that provide this find ICE unwilling to work with them on simple steps to make the process easier.

"The volunteers said churches and volunteers are overwhelmed," reports the Republic. "They're begging ICE to give them more notice about the drop-offs." Local volunteer Javier Torres tells the newspaper, "When ICE does the drop-off, they have one sheet of paper for their family that has a name and phone number of the relative or sponsor. ICE hands that sheet to a volunteer; the staff arranges the travel," which may take up to a couple days.

"Torres explained it can be stressful for volunteers because of the number of arrangements they need to make last minute," the paper says. "He said if ICE could provide the contact information for relatives and sponsors sooner, then the families or individuals will only be in Phoenix for a few hours rather than a day or two."

FREE MINDS

"We filmed what they wanted, but then we kept shooting." Former Marine Corps videographer Miles Lagoze found a way to use military equipment and deployment to make a documentary of Afghanistan troops speaking their truth. From The Washington Post:

Lagoze found himself in a murky gray area of free speech and fair-use government products. U.S. citizens can already go on Pentagon-operated sites and download free military photos and video. Their tax dollars fund it, and federal government creations are not protected by copyright.

So could Lagoze take the moments he filmed with government resources and make something new?

He worked with the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University to push back against the military's claims of impropriety. The Marine Corps relented this month.

FREE MARKETS

Is the farmer's-market era over or just normalized? "Nationwide, the number of farmers markets increased from 2,000 in 1994 to more than 8,600 in 2019, which led to a major problem," reports NPR:

There are too few farmers to populate the market stalls and too few customers filling their canvas bags with fresh produce at each market. Reports of farmers markets closing have affected communities from Norco, Calif., to Reno, Nev., to Allouez, Wis.

• A federal judge has temporarily blocked Kentucky's "fetal heartbeat" law banning abortion after about six weeks pregnancy, in response to an American Civil Liberties Union suit challenging the law's constitutionality. Known as Senate Bill 9, the legislation was passed by the state legislature last Thursday, signed into law by Republican Gov Matt Bevin on Friday, and slated to take effect immediately.

• Suicide? "A 19-year-old woman whose hands were cuffed behind her back when she committed suicide during a traffic stop in Chesapeake died of a gunshot wound through the mouth, according to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner" and local TV station WRIC.

I eat at least that. 3-4 eggs every morning cooked in either coconut oil, olive oil, butter, ghee, or bacon fat. Season it with turmeric and garlic powder. Put that on top of arugula, baby kale, cress, or some other high nutrient green and then roll it in a tortilla. Maybe put some hot sauce on it. That's a breakfast that will stick with you all day. You may not need to eat lunch.

REUTERS JOURNALIST WITHHELD DAMAGING INFO ABOUT BETO O'ROURKE UNTIL AFTER SENATE RACE
Reuters explained in a "backstory" article late Friday that Menn held onto the story until after O'Rourke's high-profile Senate race in exchange for an on-the-record interview. Menn says he was on leave from Reuters at the time in order to work on his book.

Menn had been looking into the CDC for years and "found out that they had a member who was sitting in Congress ? and then I figured out which one it was."

However, Menn said the CDC wouldn't confirm that O'Rourke was the member in question unless the reporter agreed to hang on to the information "until after the November election" in 2018. After agreeing to the group's terms, Menn approached O'Rourke for an interview with the promise that it would not be published until after his Senate race. O'Rourke agreed.

    Single Payer for the win:

'I'It Is Unspeakable': How Maduro Used Cuban Doctors to Coerce Venezuela Voters
But he said his Cuban and Venezuelan superiors told him to use the oxygen as a political weapon instead: Not for medical emergencies that day, but to be doled out closer to the election, part of a national strategy to compel patients to vote for the government.

..."There was oxygen, but they didn't let me use it," said Dr. Arias, who defected from the Cuban government's medical program late last year and now lives in Chile. "We had to leave it for the election."

...Many tactics were used, they said, from simple reminders to vote for the government to denying treatment for opposition supporters with life-threatening ailments.

The Cuban doctors said they were ordered to go door-to-door in impoverished neighborhoods, offering medicine and warning residents that they would be cut off from medical services if they did not vote for Mr. Maduro or his candidates.

Many said their superiors directed them to issue the same threats during closed-door consultations with patients seeking treatment for chronic diseases.

          Amendment XXVI:

Section 1. The right of citizens of the United States, who are eighteen years of age or older, to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of age.

Says nothing about denying the vote on account of insurance status, filing taxes as a dependent on parent's return, or living in parents' basement in a general man-baby (person-baby) fashion.

          1. Zeb   6 years ago

            Fair enough.

I can't really blame anyone for filing taxes in the way that exposes them to the least liability, or in taking advantage of available insurance benefits, though. Taking advantage of these things doesn't necessarily mean you are being an eternal child, it may just mean that you are making the most of the system as it exists.

    4. Rich   6 years ago

What's magic about 16? Infants will be longest affected by government, so they should vote as well. Come to think of it, each resident should have 130 minus their age votes.

    5. Conchfritters   6 years ago

Yes, but raise the smoking age to 21, or 100 in Hawaii, because raising the age will totally make them not want to smoke cigarettes.

"This is a lot closer to actual socialism than anything AOC or Elizabeth Warren are advocating."

No, no it isn't. Does it show some hypocrisy on Trump's part? Arguably. But it's just a president jawboning to try to keep a plant open. He ain't taking over anything. If he nationalized GM in order to keep them from closing plants, THAT would be socialism.

Meanwhile, AOC's Green New Deal essentially proposes that the Feds take over the energy business. And the transportation business. And, in order to fully stop climate change, the healthcare business as well.

"Appeals court to review lawsuit over Trump hotel"
    [...]
"RICHMOND, Va. ? The outcome of a lawsuit alleging that Donald Trump is violating the U.S. Constitution by profiting off the presidency could depend largely on competing definitions of an antiquated word: emoluments.
At the center of the lawsuit is the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution, which bans federal officials from accepting benefits from foreign or state governments without congressional approval.
The attorneys general of Maryland and Washington, D.C., say government spending at Trump's Washington hotel falls under a broad definition of emoluments: any profit, gain, or advantage.
Trump's attorneys, however, argue that the definition does not include payments for hotel stays. They argue the emoluments clause only bars payments to the president if they're made in connection with services he provides in his official capacity.
The debate over the narrow vs. broad definition will be on display when the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals hears arguments in the case Tuesday."

Mystery surrounds the deaths of six men heavily involved in the 2014 Ferguson protests, as activists speculate whether 'something sinister is at play'

Six men with connections to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, have all met untimely deaths in the past four years drawing speculation in the activist community that something sinister is at play.

Two were found dead inside torched cars, three died of apparent suicides and another collapsed on a bus, his death ruled an overdose.

Police say there is no evidence the deaths have anything to do with the protests stemming from a white police officer's fatal shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown, and that only two were homicides with no known link to the protests.

My guess: white supremacist rogue cops getting revenge.

    1. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   6 years ago

That's probably it. As we just saw with the attempted modern-day lynching of Jussie Smollett, Drumpf's election has emboldened this country's white supremacists. It's more dangerous than ever for black and brown bodies.

">Yards dazzles and distresses visitors on opening day

For Ken Dawson, a lifelong New Yorker who lives in Crown Heights and works for the MTA, today was a day of "monolithic proportions." Dawson took a half day to roam the complex, jotting down names of stores and restaurants to share with his family and friends in the Brooklyn neighborhood where he's lived for his entire 60 years.

"I couldn't wait to get up to Hudson Yards," he said. "It's the Dubai of New York. It's a breakthrough what's taken place here." Dawson, who said he was approaching the $25 billion development on Manhattan's far west side from a "construction and native New Yorker" perspective, noted that he was working to convince his skeptical neighbors that such a project shouldn't be scoffed at by locals.

"We're going to have to continue to grow, and when we grow we're not going to grow in a shabby fashion," said Dawson, who said he was excited to visit 3DEN where visitors can pay $6 to lounge, nap, even shower for 30 minutes. "You have to give this place a chance. You have to come."

Who is cleaning those showers and bed sheets? Ew.

    1. sharmota4zeb   6 years ago

The shops at Hudson are nice. I saw them on Sunday. The products are bit over priced, but $6 for a shower in NYC is a good deal. Next time, I'll have to go to 3DEN to see what those showers are like. Heck at those prices, you could spend $12 for an hour of relaxing in luxury. That's the price of a decent meal at a restaurant.

My New Boyfriend Is So Good at Sex It Makes Me Feel Bad

'm a hetero woman in her early 30s. I started seeing a new guy after a bad breakup. I expected it to be a fling, but I'm starting to get real feelings for him. The best thing about this is also my problem: The sex is incredible. Specifically, he is incredible at sex. I very rarely come from oral sex with new guys but I did with him the first time, in minutes. He knows exactly how to touch me and where, he is very responsive to my body?he's just really skilled. So much so that I almost feel shy having sex with him! I am pretty experienced and confident in my body, but when we have sex I feel lazy, like I'm doing less than he's doing. (He comes from a Christian background and didn't have sex until he was 25, and he also has a smaller than average endowment, so I think he accepted the card he was dealt and stepped up his game.) He's a good guy and I like him a lot, but I feel a weird pressure to up my game with him because he's so good, and that in turn makes me wary of sex sometimes. I wish I could take this as a challenge, but instead it's making me feel inadequate, probably for no good reason. How do I get over this?

Mess with his head so that he'll feel as inadequate as you do.

Off-duty cop arrested for brutal pistol-whipping during St. Patrick's Day brawl

An NYPD cop was busted for allegedly pistol-whipping two men and a woman with a stolen, loaded gun during a wild brawl outside an Irish pub in Midtown hours after Manhattan's annual St. Patrick's Day parade, law enforcement sources told The Post.

The firearm that Hickey allegedly used to pistol-whip the victims had been reported stolen by Virginia's Chesapeake City Police Department, according to sources.

The cop has two prior arrests on his record ? for gang assault in February 2003 and for criminal possession of marijuana in 1998, according to sources.

US planning to keep 1,000 troops in Syria despite Trump's withdrawal call

The US military is readying plans to keep 1,000 American forces in Syria ? a development that comes three months after President Trump announced he wanted a full withdrawal, according to a report on Sunday.

The Trump administration's talks with Turkey, European allies and US-backed Kurdish fighters haven't resulted in an agreement to create a safe zone in the country's northeast where the Kurds are fighting Islamic State terrorists, the Wall Street Journal reported.

After Trump's December announcement, Turkey threatened to cross the border into Syria and attack the Kurds, a group Ankara accuses of being a terrorist group.

The US will now continue to work with the Kurds, meaning that as many as 1,000 American troops will remain in Syria.

Trump's initial decision to remove the roughly 2,000 troops prompted the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis and criticism from bipartisan lawmakers who accused the president of pulling out before ISIS had been defeated.

My take: it was originally supposed to be 10,000 troops, but the master negotiator struck again and got us a deal to only leave around 2,000. He is the best!

What a great assignment - holed up with 1,000 troops surrounded by Iranian militia, Al Qaeda, the Syrian army, and Russians, in order to protect Kurds, who Turkey wants to annihilate; I'm sure the troops are ecstatic.

If I recall correctly, Garry Johnson wanted us to replace military occupation with strategic forces handling situations in small groups.

"We filmed what they wanted, but then we kept shooting." Former Marine Corps videographer Miles Lagoze found a way to use military equipment and deployment to make a documentary of Afghanistan troops speaking their truth.

Stupid Millennials think that they are special and that they know the "truth".

Every war has soldiers blowing off steam and doing things in violation of orders and/or good discipline. War is hell.

These Marines are just showing how their dereliction of duty led to circumstances where other Marines could be unnecessarily hurt or killed.

Good going guys. Live with that the rest of your lives.

There are too few farmers to populate the market stalls and too few customers filling their canvas bags with fresh produce at each market. Reports of farmers markets closing have affected communities from Norco, Calif., to Reno, Nev., to Allouez, Wis.

If only there was some technology we could use in rural areas that could make it possible for the hungry, homeless residents of New York City, San Francisco, and Los Angeles to live within walking distance of these rural farmer's markets. Heck, those new residents could even work on the farms that so that the agricultural industry doesn't need special work visas that aren't available to employers in the warehouse industry.

"When ICE does the drop-off, they have one sheet of paper for their family that has a name and phone number of the relative or sponsor.

My understanding is that application for asylum status can be made from outside the U.S. Maybe if the immigrants applied for asylum status before they left, volunteers would have even more notice. Did the immigrants have the name and address of the family members they were intending to stay with before they came to the United States?

My understanding is that it can take up to a year for an immigrant seeking asylum status to get a hearing, and that a large portion of the asylum seekers never bother to show up for their court dates. Maybe we should find a safe space for them in Mexico--until their court date. If they were fleeing persecution, they should be glad for that, right?

"Nationwide, the number of farmers markets increased from 2,000 in 1994 to more than 8,600 in 2019, which led to a major problem," reports NPR

I remember when the roller disco industry went through the same growing pains.

    1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

"Is the farmer's-market era over or just normalized?"

Yeah, um . . . an over saturated market isn't necessarily the end. People are buying "organic" and fresh produce elsewhere.

This ain't the end of disco.

I thought Stabucks had saturated the market more than ten years ago. Their p/e is still above the average for the market--as well it should be.

Julian Sanchez describing Trump's attempt to persuade the CEO of GM to keep a plant open as closer to actual socialism than anything AOC or Elizabeth Warren are advocating is fucking ridiculous.

Socialism is about government ownership of industry and the redistribution of wealth. In practice, it obviates prices set by markets.

Trump suggested they sell the plant to another private car maker. That doesn't sound like government ownership to me. I don't see much about wealth redistribution there. I don't see much about prices not being set by markets either.

Elizabeth Warren is advocating stripping Amazon, Facebook, and Google shareholders of their businesses and forcing them to spin off or sell their assets in a fire sale. She also wants to subject those companies to harsh oversight by bureaucrats.

AOC is a party member of the Democratic Socialists of America and pushing a Green New Deal, one of the main objectives of which is expressly to address "income inequality" AKA "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need".

Both AOC and Elizabeth Warren are pushing for Medicare for All, the apparent goal of which is to all but wipe out market based pricing from the medical industry.

Julian Sanchez is hurting the cause of free market capitalism by making such a stupid comparison. He should be ridiculed for this.

    1. Libertymike   6 years ago

This is the same Julian Sanchez whom you cited as an authority on that which constitutes libertarianism.

Julian is a very, very, thick type of anti-racist, mini-archism good, anarcho-free enterprise bad, type of libertarian. IOW, he's a cuck.

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

The appeal to authority is the fallacy to which I am least susceptible, and I don't think I've ever cited Julian Sanchez as an authority on anything.

I did say he has a great argument about why the NAP is simply a rule of thumb. Here it is again:

        "The Non-Aggression Principle Can't Be Salvaged?and Isn't Even a Principle"

        http://www.libertarianism.org/.....-principle

Incidentally, this guy had some amazing ideas about creative destruction:

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_destruction #In_Marx's_thought

He was wrong about a lot of things. Right about others. That's the way truth and reality work. It doesn't really depend on anybody's authority, and people who are wrong about everything else can be right about other things. If you were looking for the best streusel shop in Berlin, Hitler might tell you where to go. He was wrong about a lot of things, but, who knows? Maybe he was right about streusel.

        1. Libertymike   6 years ago

Given that Adolph is no longer available, perhaps you can tell what is the best streusel shop in Berlin?

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

He sure seems to have gotten lost in the TDS bubble somewhere. Losing all sense of proportion when Trump steps into the picture is what TDS is all about, and thinking that Trump tweet is more socialist than anything AOC and Warren are advocating is clear evidence of that.

    1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

Aren't there always fireballs over Russia?

Seems like anytime there's something weird going on in the atmosphere, it's happening over Russia. Maybe it's that if it happens over the ocean, nobody notices, and Russia so freaking big that they seem to get the lion's share of weird shit happening over land.

There's an anthology series of animated shorts on Netflix called Love Death and Robots. Some of them are great. Some of them suck. Some of them are goofy. One of them is about an elite unit of the Red Army fighting an unholy evil in the heart of Siberia during the Cold War.

It seemed to be like an alternate explanation for something like the Tunguska event.

"Short-sighted politicians & media pundits who've spent last 2 years accusing Trump as a Putin puppet have brought us the expensive new Cold War & arms race. How? Because Trump now does everything he can to prove he's not Putin's puppet?even if it brings us closer to nuclear war."

On the one hand, I expect ICE is doing the minimum on purpose to troll a bit. On the other hand, if they did proper steps they would get bitched at by the open borders crowd for not moving fast enough.
