8 Months After Getting Fired for Stupid Tweets, James Gunn Is Renamed Guardians of the Galaxy Director

Sometimes, reason wins out.

James Gunn will return to direct the third film of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, multiple outlets are reporting. The news comes nearly eight months after The Walt Disney Company fired Gunn over a series of offensive, years-old, tweets.

After he was fired, Disney condemned Gunn's past social media posts, which included bad jokes about violence and sexual assault against children. Gunn also apologized, saying he was a different person when he wrote the tweets in question. According to Deadline, Gunn attended several meetings with Walt Disney Studios President Alan Horn, and eventually Disney decided to shift course.

In the aftermath of Gunn's firing, Guardians of the Galaxy stars penned an open letter expressing their support for him. While they didn't defend his Twitter posts, they did note Gunn has clearly changed as a person. A Change.org petition calling for Disney to rehire Gunn has garnered nearly 430,000 signatures.

Deadline, which confirmed Gunn's return with both Marvel and Gunn's representatives, was the first to report the decision to reinstate him. The Wrap and Polygon also confirmed the news.

"I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months. I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be," Gunn wrote in a statement posted to Twitter. "I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all."

This is a good decision. Gunn's tweet jokes were in very poor taste, but they were just that—jokes. They only resurfaced because right-wing trolls dug them up in an attempt to punish Gunn, a liberal, for criticizing conservative pundit Ben Shapiro. Crusades like these are meant to give the left a taste of their own P.C. medicine, which requires supposed free speech advocates on the far right to do what they say everyone should stop doing—weaponizing identity politics. While folks on the right may have done what they did to Gunn for different reasons, the end result is the same: interesting people and ideas were sidelined over tastless but largely harmless statements and positions.

In addition to directing the third Guardians movie, Gunn is working on the Suicide Squad sequel, which takes place in the D.C. Comics cinematic universe and is set for an August 2021 release. He'll now do both films, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Pretty sure the takeaway is that if you have the right politics you get away with it. Because if what you said was true then Roseanne wouldn't have lost her career and your publication wouldn't have celebrated her firing while mourning the loss of Gunn.

Oh yeah, it takes a real leap to see what was different between the two situations. Clearly, only a conservative would reach such a conclusion

Someone obsessed with the lefty/media narrative would instantly reach such a conclusion.

Those were both issues that articles were written about. So, I'm obsessed for reading the articles on both topics?

"There's no contradiction in celebrating progress toward a color-blind society while noting that racism still exists. Roseanne Barr's Twitter feed may have been filled with racist, Islamophobic, and misogynist statements prior to her triumphant return to network TV, but who would have been looking carefully at it then? Surely it matters more that she was fired as soon as she made a patently racist remark in public, and that many of the policies that have long harmed blacks as a group are being reformed."

        1. $park? is the Worst   6 years ago

Huh. I only recalled the ones Shackford and Soave (IIRC) put out saying she maybe shouldn't have been fired. Maybe Nick is just too old for forgiveness.

Neither "defended her", as you said. Though, Robby had the right take of "this is all so stupid".

              1. Lord Blastington   6 years ago

Personally think both the firing of Gunn and Barr is BS, tho there is one key difference from both cases, Barr made the offending tweet while under the employment of Disney while Gunn's offending tweets was made years before. Guess the firing of Barr is more comparable with the firing of Wendig

                1. Lord Blastington   6 years ago

There is something more I would like to add, someone on twitter that claimed to have been in the Comic Book Industry claimed that Chuck Wendig was nearly impossible to work with and get along with, I strongly suspect that him making that tweet was simply the straw that broke the camel's back, and the Reason's blogs about Roseanne Barr pointed out that she has a long history of bad behaviour to the point that it was a surprise that she was even hired to begin with. I now strongly suspect that just like Wendig, there were lots going on behind the scenes and that tweet Barr made was simply the last straw.

Now if we look at James Gunn from the standpoint of running a business, Gunn provides results AND he gets along well with people he works with. Both Guardians of the Galaxy films were hits critically, financially, and even with fan reception (something we can't say about Capt. Marvel). And he works very well with the cast and crew even developing a friendship with a number of them, to the point that allot of them (even the the ones who were further to the right of Gunn) rushed to his defense when he got fired in the first place. So in regards to running a business, Disney should employ more people like Gunn and less Barrs and Wendigs

                  1. Kyfho Myoba   6 years ago

On the other hand, if Gunn actually is a closeted pedophile, (he has long multi-decade friendships with some and the tweets aren't really funny, they're creepy), and if Disney thinks that that will influence enough movie goers to avoid anything that Gunn has touched .....

                    1. Lord Blastington   6 years ago

There is a presumption of innocence, so unless Hard Evidence comes up we should presume Gunn is not a Pedophile. Something we should all remember even in the MeToo era.

And as for the Jokes. Normally real Pedophiles try their best to hide the fact that they are pedophiles from the public, and that includes purposely avoiding saying anything related to pedophilia out in the open, so if Gunn was really a pedophile then it would make more logical sense that he would try to avoid the topic in his tweets. Saying Gunn is a Pedo based on jokes alone is like saying someone is a Nazi just for posting a Grossly Offensive Joke with his Pug.

As for people he had associated with, well as I pointed out real pedos try their best to hide it and some are better at it than others, so it won't surprise me if at that time Gunn had absolutely no idea his former friend is a Pedo. And I willing to bet that one of Gunn's reasons that he stopped making pedophilia jokes was that a person he associated with was revealed to be a pedophile.

Lets think of it this way, if a guy had coffee with Ted Bundy 2 years before the murder started, dose that alone proves this person share any legal and/or moral responsibility for Bundy's murders

    3. Brandybuck   6 years ago

Let's not forget the utter creepyiness of Gunn's past comments. Creepiness that flies in the face of the family oriented reputation that Disney has spent most of a century maintaining.

Joking about molesting children is crossing a line. Even for lefties.

If it was Chuck Wendig that was rehired I might agree that Disney could have some sort of Left Wing Bias.

However from what I have seen, James Gunn gets along well with others he works with AND provide profitable results (something the company needs after Capt. Marvel), and not to mention unlike Barr and Wendig, Gunn's offending tweets were made years before he was even hired by Disney and afterwards he stopped making Pedo Joke Tweets

Can we please stop using the word "troll" incorrectly as if it meant "a person on the internet I don't like?" "Troll" with respect to the internet means one very specific thing, someone who posts something THEY DON'T ACTUALLY BELIEVE just to try and stir up an argument solely for argument's sake. Since the people attacking James Gunn sincerely believed he should be fired, they are not "trolls" by any definition of the word. To be a "troll" someone would have to not care one bit whether James Gunn was fired or not, but would just try to provoke people who liked Gunn into an argument by attacking him, or vice versa.

    1. Mickey Rat   6 years ago

The premise here is that they were trying to collect a scalp in trying to turn the tables on this kind of harassment. They did not really care about getting Gunn fired in particular or that he should have been fired for what he said. It was just retaliation. An argument can be made that leftist organizations like Media Matters do not care about the issue, they just want to silence well known voices on the right.

    This is a good decision.

Sure it is. Now we've normalized that left wingers get a review after the hysteria dies down and can resume their lives while those on the right will continue to be subjected to the crazy. It's perfect for the left: allowing them to keep their weapon but immunizing their allies. We'll definitely get rid of it now.
