Students Fight to Free Contraception From Vending Machine Laws: Reason Roundup

Plus: Russian "spy" Maria Butina, Baton Rouge cops in blackface, good news for California sex workers, and a new FDA crackdown.

Some states ban all over-the-counter drugs from vending machines. For a few years now, emergency contraception has been sold from vending machines at some colleges, providing students convenient access "without stigma," The Verge notes. Schools in California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia now have medicine-dispensing machines created by Vengo Labs.

"In a space that's long been dominated by reproductive rights activists and public health advocates, it's strange to hear an emergency contraception vendor discuss the product as though it's no different from a candy bar or pack of dental floss," writes The Verge's Lux Alptraum. "Yet, it's somewhat refreshing, too."

Emergency contraception is basically a concentrated dose of normal hormonal birth control pills, taken after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. Offering it from campus vending machines is a great development and one that will hopefully catch on. But it also helps highlight the absurdity of still requiring a prescription to get non-emergency contraception.

Campus contraception vending machines are revealing other regulatory barriers, too. Yale University students pushing for one last year found that state law prohibits it. In Connecticut, all over-the-counter medications are banned from being sold via vending machine.

"Similar laws exist around the country and are currently being challenged," notes Alptraum. "This week, a bill was introduced in Maine at the request of students at the University of Southern Maine that would allow some over-the-counter medications—including emergency contraception—to be sold in vending machines."

Under the Maine bill, sponsored by state Rep. Maureen Terry (D-Gorham), vending machines could sell up to 10 different types of over-the-counter drugs.

FREE MINDS

Is Maria Butina really who federal prosecutors say she is? "On December 13, Butina pleaded guilty to conspiracy to act as an unregistered agent of the Russian Federation. She faces a possible five-year sentence in federal prison," notes The New Republic. More:

With anti-Russia fervor in the United States approaching levels directed at Muslims following the attacks of September 11, 2001, it was easy for prosecutors to sell the story of Butina as a spy to the public and the press. But is she really? Last February, Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the Russia probe, indicted 13 Russian spies for interfering with the 2016 election. And in July, two days before Butina was arrested, Mueller charged twelve more Russians with hacking into email accounts and computer networks belonging to the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. It is not inconceivable that Butina is among their ranks.

Yet a close examination of Butina's case suggests that it is not so. Butina is simply an idealistic young Russian, born in the last days of the Soviet Union, raised in the new world of capitalism, and hoping to contribute to a better understanding between two countries while pursuing a career in international relations. Fluent in English and interested in expanding gun rights in Russia, she met with Americans in Moscow and on frequent trips to the United States, forging ties with members of the National Rifle Association, important figures within the conservative movement, and aspiring politicians. "I thought it would be a good opportunity to do what I could, as an unpaid private citizen, not a government employee, to help bring our two countries together," she told me.

The FDA is targeting supplement makers in its latest regulatory crackdown. "The Food and Drug Administration on Monday accused 17 nutritional-supplement makers of selling more than 58 products with improper claims that they can prevent, treat or cure serious diseases, including Alzheimer's," reports the Wall Street Journal.

Have you seen online ads for dietary supplements claiming to cure your #Alzheimers disease or memory loss? It's a #healthfraud scam. There is currently no cure or treatment to stop or reverse the progression of #Alzheimers. LEARN MORE: https://t.co/llaycvlUWR pic.twitter.com/VqV0dvUGBx

— U.S. FDA (@US_FDA) February 11, 2019

U.S. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said these enforcement efforts are part of a larger "plan for implementing one of the most significant modernizations of dietary supplement regulation and oversight in more than 25 years."

JUSTICE REFORM

California bill would decriminalize condoms, crime-reporting for sex workers. "Right now, we know there are sex workers who are victimized or witness crimes and are scared to come forward because they think they are going to be arrested," said California state Sen. Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco). "We want to create every incentive for sex workers to feel safe in reporting crimes."

A new bill introduced by Wiener would stop cops from using condoms as probable cause in prostitution arrests or charging sex workers who come forward to report crimes.

QUICK HITS

At this point it'd be more newsworthy to find groups Kamala Harris *didn't* want to see jailed or deported during her time as a California prosecutor https://t.co/sIRfZ3nFCZ

  • That time Baton Rouge cops thought they could fool drug buyers with blackface.
  • Sen. Rand Paul will vote against William Barr, Trump's nominee for attorney general. "He's been the chief advocate for warrantless surveillance of U.S. citizens," said the Kentucky Republican in a statement. "I think that the Fourth Amendment should protect your phone calls and your bank information. People shouldn't be allowed to look at it without a warrant."
  • U.S. border patrol agents just arrested 330 undocumented migrants around El Paso, most of them "Central American families and unaccompanied juveniles."
  • Looks like another agreement to keep funding the government beyond this Friday has been reached.
  • Trump's travel ban is back in court.

ELECTION 2020

Sen. Amy Klobuchar and President Donald Trump traded a round of childish Twitter barbs about global warming and Trump's hair. (Isn't campaign season going to be fun?) Apparently, it's making sparks fly between Meghan McCain and other hosts of The View, with Joy Behar accusing McCain of having a "hissy fit." (OK, that's kind of fun.) Behar later told audiences "we were going to talk about more politics, but we changed our minds," so instead they talked about a sex dungeon in the basement of a suburban Philadelphia home for sale.

Science is on my side, @realDonaldTrump. Looking forward to debating you about climate change (and many other issues). And I wonder how your hair would fare in a blizzard?

Some states ban all over-the-counter drugs from vending machines.

Japan adds panty vending machines while the United States removes drug vending machines. What's the world coming to?

    1. BearOdinson   6 years ago

Japan has panty vending machines and octopus porn. US is still somewhat puritanical.

And yet, we have a lot more sex than they do!

      1. damikesc   6 years ago

Don't assume Japan is less puritannical. In most ways, they are far more so.

Octopus porn is because it is still not a good thing to show a penis inserting into a vagina in Japanese porn.

        1. Conchfritters   6 years ago

No shit - Japanese porn usually blocks out the actual penatration.

          1. Chipper Morning Wood   6 years ago

And they still haven't learned proper grooming habits.

      2. CharlesWT   6 years ago

Japan has more vending machines per capita than perhaps any other country.

Although porn is banned in China, about the only sex education young Chinese get, they get from Japanese porn.

        1. sharmota4zeb   6 years ago

Is that why China's space program is gearing up?

    2. Rufus The Monocled   6 years ago

      Hello.

"In a space that's long been dominated by reproductive rights activists and public health advocates, it's strange to hear an emergency contraception vendor discuss the product as though it's no different from a candy bar or pack of dental floss,"

I predict a revival in Edmund Burke soon.

      1. Cathy L   6 years ago

Why am I not surprised you have some kind of problem with contraception even when government subsidies aren't involved.

        1. John   6 years ago

What the fuck is "emergency contraception"? Is this for women who go into heat and just can't help it?

          1. $park? is the Worst   6 years ago

Yes, and the men that are also in heat and willing to oblige.

Just because your anemic gametes bump around and berate each other for any turns to the left, and end up swimming in a clockwise circle like confused ants, does not mean the rest of us have to play Russian rulette with our elephant guns.

The Martia Butina case is outragous. And the worst part of it is is that the mass media were nothing but stooges for dishonest prosecutors. The media helped a crooked US Attorney send an innocent woman to federal prison.

Remember that the next time some Journolister is whinning about being laid off. These people are scum.

    1. BearOdinson   6 years ago

I am so glad I am not the only one who feels this way. I read about her a few months ago, and this fucking bullshit.

      1. John   6 years ago

I thought it was bullshit from the first. But the media did make up for slandering her as a spy by claiming she is a whore. So there is that I guess. Journalists are worse than politicians.

        1. Rufus The Monocled   6 years ago

          All because Trump.

        2. damikesc   6 years ago

I love that they are now saying how America had an anti-Russia fervor when, outside of the far Left, most Americans didn't give a shit then and don't give a shit now.

There was no American anti-Russia fervor, There was Left-wing anti-Russia fervor.

          1. John   6 years ago

Yes. But that will be gaslighted into American anti-Russian ferver. Give it a few months and they will be saying Trump tried to start World War III by stoking his crazed supporters into anti Russian ferver. You watch.

      2. CatoTheChipper   6 years ago

        Same here, Bear.

When the feds set their sights on a victim, the victim has two choices: cop a plea or find a million dollars or so to mount a defense. Since most victims can't lay their hands on funds sufficient to mount a defense, they cop a plea regardless of their guilt or innocence.

The Butina case is not just about the injustice perpetrated by the misnamed Department of Justice. It is also about the pervasiveness of fake news in the Deep State Media.

    2. Rufus The Monocled   6 years ago

Mueller is an immoral piece of shit. Someone told me 'but decorated war hero!' as if that shields him from being a worthless political hack.

It truly is disgusting and hope karma exists.

      1. Griffin3   6 years ago

As you get older, you realize you have to make your own karma.

      2. Fats of Fury   6 years ago

You know who else was a decorated war hero? Spoiler Alert!

        1. Marcus Aurelius   6 years ago

          Crooked Hil?

    3. Conchfritters   6 years ago

The case is absolutely bullshit. If she was truly a spy like Anna Chapman we would be trading her ass for political prisoners right now. Who the fuck is her lawyer? What charges have been filed against her? Did she overstay a visa?

      1. John   6 years ago

I imagine they overcharged the shit out of her and she pled guilty because she didn't have the money to defend herself and trying to do so meant risking spending the rest of her life in prison. So, she pled to some BS charge that got the government off her back. This is how the feds operate.

    4. Tom Bombadil   6 years ago

"Remember that the next time some Journolister is whinning about being laid off."

      Let them eat code.

  7. Fist of Etiquette   6 years ago

But it also helps highlight the absurdity of still requiring a prescription to get non-emergency contraception.

Do we really want young ladies to be losing their flower outside the bounds of matrimony and their childbearing duties without first getting guidance from the family doctor?

    More bad economic news.

Best U.S. Job Numbers Ever? Not If You're Out of Work for a Year

Yet by one key measure, far from a boom, the labor market hasn't even returned to a normal state. Over the past 12 months, the share of unemployed people out of work for 52 weeks or longer has averaged 13.2 percent -- higher than at almost any point in data from 1976 to 2008.

This economy is so bad that way too many people have been out of work for more than a year. Not only that, for the people who actually have jobs, many are working two jobs and 70 hours a week just to survive.

    #DrumpfRecession
    #UnbanPalinsButtplug

PS ? We Koch / Reason libertarians know how to fix this: more immigration.

    1. John   6 years ago

People out of work for over a year are always the last to get hired. The fact that they represent a higher percentage of total unemployed means that the economy is hiring more people and eating through the supply of those who were out of work for a short time and get hired first.

That is actually a sign of just how strong this economy is.

      1. OpenBordersLiberal-tarian   6 years ago

If Palin's Buttplug hadn't been banned he'd tell you how totally wrong your analysis is.

Maybe "moneyshot" will stop by and explain it to you. Seriously, this economy sucks.

Americans' Confidence in Their Finances Keeps Growing

69% expect their financial situation to improve over the next year
Optimism about finances over the next year is almost at a record-high level
50% say they are in better shape financially than a year ago

Trump is gonna get even more than 304 Electoral College votes in 2020 to Hillary's 227.

      3. BestUsedCarSales   6 years ago

I really dislike how much the unemployment rate hides. Did it ever revert back to it's old definition after it was officially changed to not include large swaths of workers during the Obama administration?

        1. Tom Bombadil   6 years ago

          No.

        2. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

Its a bullshit measurement because, as you say, it hides some of the unemployed.

IIRC, the quarterly employment numbers since Trump took office means that millions of people stopped looking for work. This means that Obama's and ever other president's unemployment numbers were skewed low by numerous percentage points.
The official jobless rate, known as U3, only includes people who don't have a job but have looked for one in the past month. The result is that millions of Americans who want to work are actually left out of the official figure, potentially making the labor market look healthier than it really is.

        3. John   6 years ago

No it hasn't. You still have to look at it in context with the labor force participation rate. The good news is that that is going up as well. So, the decreases in unemployment represent actual improvement in the labor market.

There will definitely be a Circuit split, since the 9th Circuit is where you go for open borders and the rest of the Circuits follow the Constitution and affirm the Executive and Congressional power to regulate migrants (Article I, Sec 9), regulate Naturalization, and secure the national defense.

The agreement contains only a fraction of the money President Donald Trump wants for his promised border wall and does not mention a concrete barrier.

Details have yet to be released but aides familiar with the negotiations say it includes $1.375bn in funding for 55 miles (88km) of new fencing at the border, a small part of the more than 2,000 miles promised by the president.

Ask for $5.7B and get $1.375B. Art of the Deal!

He got $1.375 Billion from Congress and he can still declare an emergency and build the rest using DOD funds. Yes, the Democrats can sue and try to tie that up in court, but in the mean time he can build away with the $1.375 billon he has and when he wins in court, and he will, he will be able to pick up with the DOD funds right about the time these funds run out.

Regardless, he will now have 55 miles of wall to campaign on. And the Democrats can campaign on how walls are evil and immoral, which might be the worst campaign slogan in history.

The immigration deal is apparently centered on more money for border security (less than the $5 billion Trump wanted for the wall, but the Democrats want to limit the number of beds ICE can maintain for deportees. In other words, ICE would only be able to deport x number of people at any given time--forcing the Trump administration to prioritize criminals and illegal aliens with criminal convictions and let the others go.

I havne't read anything about Dreamers. Maybe that's still in the deal somewhere, but you'd think someone would have mentioned it. I maintain that the Democrats' primary concern about Dreamers is as a marketing tool. I haven't seen the Democrats offer them anything. The last time the Dreamers were mentioned in the context of negotiations over avoiding a shutdown was when Trump offered to give the Dreamers a three year reprieve--and Nancy Pelosi didn't give a shit.

    1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

This raises and interesting point that these ICE facilities were built before Trump. Some other Congress and President was okay with trying to enforce immigration law.

      1. loveconstitution1789   6 years ago

They got to keep bureaucrats in federal government...for now.

I saw multiple articles about federal bureaucrats who are seriously considering leaving government jobs because that 35 day shutdown rattled them to the core. Even with back pay and pay for work that some did not do. The free ride is over.

I think another shutdown of a paycheck or two would have cause many federal workers to quit.

        1. Griffin3   6 years ago

Bleah. It would cause the motivated ones to quit, maybe. Too many government workers are not fit for any job in the outside world.

      2. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

Limiting the number of people the Trump administration can deport at any given time limits their ability to round up illegal aliens--if they have nowhere to put them. That's something substantial.

I maintain that immigration from Mexico is a good thing, so long as we can keep out the criminals, etc., and I maintain that Congress is the right place to set immigration policy and that the American people's support for more legal immigration is predicated on a secure border.

Making progress on both objectives is a good thing far as I'm concerned, and Trump seems to have turned the corner on legal immigration, as well. I wish Trump had made more progress on border security, but we may need a Republican House to achieve that.

ENB's newly favorite representatives can't seem to stop apologizing for ENB's newly favorite tweets.

"A Minnesota congresswoman apologized Monday for using language that was criticized as anti-Semitic after both Democratic and Republican leaders condemned her suggestion that lawmakers' support for Israel was driven by money from a pro-Israel group.

"Anti-Semitism is real and I am grateful for Jewish allies and colleagues who are educating me on the painful history of anti-Semitic tropes," freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) said on Twitter.

    She added: "I unequivocally apologize."

    http://www.wsj.com/articles/de.....549906458?

Like I said about the one who apologized for claiming that Israel had hypnotized the world, if there were any legitimate reason to defend those statements, they died the moment the people who made them apologized for making them.

I wonder how the esteemed Representative feels about "sex work".

    1. John   6 years ago

Gee Ken, do you mean allowing large numbers of immigrants from societies that are virilently anti-Semetic might make our society more anti-Semetic and give us politicians who are as well because politicians being politicians will compete for said ant-Semites' votes? Who could have seen that coming?

      1. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

Don't think you were here yesterday, but ENB took McCarthy to task for suggesting that Kevin McCarthy was wrong to suggest that these comments should be treated like Steve King's comments about white supremacy.

        http://reason.com/blog/2019/02/11/roundup

Actually, ENB's headline stated that McCarthy thought criticizing Israeli policy was worse than white nationalism--something McCarthy never said. For people who are already apt to call out horseshit, that was an awful lot of horseshit to ignore.

      2. Leo Kovalensky II   6 years ago

do you mean allowing large numbers of immigrants from societies that are virilently anti-Semetic might make our society more anti-Semetic

Are you arguing that we need to be anti-Muslim so that we don't become anti-Semetic? I'm really confused by what you're trying to say here.

        1. John   6 years ago

I am not arguing anything. I am pointing out a fact. Muslims are very anti Semetic. If you let more Muslims into the country, the country will be more anti Semetic. That is the way it works.

So, what do you value more, letting more Muslims in or having less antisemitism? You can't have both. So, pick one.

    2. Ken Shultz   6 years ago

It isn't entirely clear to me that Representative Omar is referring to her own tweet (or its contents) as an "anti-Semitic trope", so I don't think it's fair to say that ENB defended anti-Semitic tropes yesterday.

Yeah, that's being a whole lot kinder to ENB than she was to Kevin McCarthy, but there's this thing called "tu quoque". Turnabout may be fair play, but it's also extremely vulnerable to charges of irrationality.

According to Pew, 45% of American Muslims say gays should be accepted, compared to 47% who say should be discouraged, with a combined 8% that say "neither/both equally" or "don't know".

So sure, it's not a majority or plurality, but it's pretty close to halfsies.

Also more then Evangelical Protestants (36% "should be accepted"), Jehovah's Witnesses (16% "should be accepted") or Mormons (36% "should be accepted").

Y'all over-state the views of American Muslims. Our home-grown religious sects are more hostile to gay folk.

              Selection bias, aisle 2!

American Muslims are all of the people who are religiously Muslim or culturally Muslim. When someone considers themselves an Evangelical Protestant, they are making a statement that they are very religious. My guess is for Mormons, it is similar, but there are a few non-religious Mormons who still self-identify that way.

I think if you polled all Americans who come from some sort of culturally Christian background, you would find the numbers of acceptance higher than 50%.

U.S. border patrol agents just arrested 330 undocumented migrants around El Paso

    No, they didn't.

Look, yes, it was in the area the Border Patrol calls the "El Paso sector", sure. But by actual miles of distance, an arrest that happened in Antelope Hills only happened "around El Paso" in the same sense that a burial in Arlington National Cemetery happened "around Philadelphia".

But Antelope Wells isn't in Texas. It's in New Mexico, and is much closer to Arizona (30 miles) than it is to Texas (120 miles).

It's time to just legalize prostitution so that there are fewer miscommunications. Yesterday, I found a $10 bill on the floor. Long story short: I have to get my car bumper repaired, which is a shame, because the guy was hot.
