Roku Bans Alex Jones, InfoWars from Streaming Platform

Yes, the paranoid lunatic is a mega-troll, but the beauty of new media means never having to engage stuff you find awful or offensive.

Roku's digital media players let users stream all sorts of channels and sites on their TVs. Amazon Video, Netflix, Hulu, and thousands of other channels flow through it in households all over the country.

Now Roku is getting into the deplatforming game:

After the InfoWars channel became available, we heard from concerned parties and have determined that the channel should be removed from our platform. Deletion from the channel store and platform has begun and will be completed shortly.

— Roku (@Roku) January 16, 2019

YouTube

It should go without saying that Roku, as a private business, has the right to bounce whomever they want. But as with similar actions at places such as Twitter, Facebook, and Patreon, I think this sort of decision is a troubling sign of a crackdown taking place throughout online media. Nobody would assume that Roku's owners, employees, or shareholders were supporting InfoWars' most infamous host, Alex Jones, as he spins wild conspiracy theories and screams at a pile of dog shit. And the way Roku works, you never have to see anything you don't want—it's a strong "pull" platform, meaning the user has to seek channels out. Assuming you do somehow run into content you find offensive, you can make sure you never see it again.

That's part of the magic of most new media, and it's a benefit that should be talked about more. You really can ignore that which you find awful, for whatever reason. Across various platforms, I don't think I've ever encountered anything by Alex Jones or his pals unless I purposefully searched for it. When it comes to producing and consuming content online, the rule is from each according to his psychosis, to each according to his taste.

A better policy for the big social media platforms, I think, is to ban only stuff that is clearly illegal, such as true threats. This sort of censorious behavior starts with the Alex Joneses of the world, but mission creep inevitably sets in and more scalps get taken. New media platforms give us access to virtually whatever we want, but they also give us near-complete control of our user experience. It's a shame to start winnowing down options just because some content makers are sad sacks of shit.

There's stuff a lot worse than Alex Jones on Roku if you poke about. Conspiracy sites that make him look positively sane in comparison. Hell, there's all the pr0n in the world, you just need to know the codes to enter. Yes, porn. It's hidden but it's there.

It's not about vulgarity and Nick knows it. These activists aren't trying to protect their own eyes and ears. They want his political message not to be heard by anyone. Ditto with Sargon of Akkad, for the high crime of criticizing social justice.

      1. albo   6 years ago

Yet if some social conservative complained about too many trannies on TV, the Left would respond: "Just change the channel then." The hypocrisy is delicious

        1. Just Say'n   6 years ago

By "the Left" do you mean Nick and every writer at Reason? We don't even need to pretend in that case. Recall the difference in reaction from the writers when the NFL banned flag kneeling and then applauded censorship of Alex Jones and whoever the baddie du jour was on social media.

If they had just kept their position with regards to the flag protest and remained consistent, Nick wouldn't look like such a dolt.

          1. TuIpa   6 years ago

That you would call anyone a dolt is hilarious. Why don't you look up irony while you're looking up dummy.

Nick and the TreasonNN writers are not-so-secret leftists? Interesting.

          3. Overt   6 years ago

If they had just kept their position with regards to the flag protest and remained consistent, Nick wouldn't look like such a dolt.

Did Nick really applaud the deplatforming of Alex Jones? Every article I recall was similar to the one above...Namely, "I don't agree at all with Alex Jones, and private companies can do what they want, but we don't think it was a good decision."

Likewise, I seem to remember the articles about flag kneeling to be more along the lines with "Private companies can do what they want, but we don't think the message is that bad and it's a bad idea to be censorious anyways."

Other than them finding one set of content better than another, as far as I remember, their message has been pretty consistent- "Private companies are free to censor, but they shouldn't".

            Do you have some examples?

            1. TuIpa   6 years ago

No he doesn't have examples because he's nothing more than a whiny bitch.

              1. Overt   6 years ago

Hush. The adults are talking. It may be a shock to you, but not every internet conversation needs to be some digital facsimile of baboons mooning each other.

OT: While I thought Louis C.K. was funny, I never thought he was some sort of a comedic God. However, I am really enjoying defiant Louis: Louis C.K. Jokes About Sexually Harassing Women: 'I Like to Jerk Off, and I Don't Like Being Alone'

Instead, C.K. doubled down on jokes about "retarded" kids, rehashing the fact that he was once sent to a summer camp for these children. A woman sitting at the table next to me, said afterward that she works with disabled kids. She wasn't offended, but said it seemed like he didn't know what he was talking about, like he had no idea what that community actually deals with. Her date said that his baby had actually died, so C.K.'s bit about dead babies also didn't go over that well with him. They weren't offended, they just didn't think it was funny.

Visa, Mastercard and Paypal are private companies, so if they collude and make it impossible for you to transact...

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

This sort of censorious behavior starts with the Alex Joneses of the world, but mission creep inevitably sets in and more scalps get taken.

Nick, baby, the "other" or "more" scalps are already being taken. Alex Jones getting deplatformed is yesterday's news. Perfectly reasonable people who aren't even in the country of conspiracy theorists, let alone the ballpark are being deplatformed by major payment processors. I respectfully ask Reason publish a deep-think article on this. It's a worthwhile subject.

      1. Serial Microaggressor   6 years ago

Reason needs someone on the culture war beat, and Robby does a mediocre job at it, also college is too narrow in scope. I have to go to Quillette or Tim Pool for that stuff.

        1. MasterThief   6 years ago

I like Tim Pool. He's a lefty who generally gets it and isn't afraid to look at the problems of his own side. In spite of him being a "Bernie bro" he would make Reason significantly more libertarian and raise their integrity if hired. It's sad that he better serves Reason's mission statement than most writers here.

      2. mad.casual   6 years ago

It's a fat fucking lie. The only way Alex Jones is the first scalp is if you torture yourself with an exceedingly convoluted Constitutional/Not Constitutional Public/Private byzantine bullshit. Alex Jones was 'deplatformed' in 08-2018, but gun channels and gun videos have been getting demonetized and yanked down regularly since at least Sandy Hook. Youtube loudly and proudly took down bump stock videos after the Las Vegas shooting.

If, as you indicated by widening the net to payment systems, between Paypal and AWS, Wikimedia was the first scalping and Alex Jones is just one of the others.

        1. Hank Phillips   6 years ago

And speaking of worthwhile subjects, that Vegas shooter--who dripped fieldcraft and first responder connections--has evaporated from the news like an Al Gore masseuse.

          1. BYODB   6 years ago

And speaking of worthwhile subjects, that Vegas shooter--who dripped fieldcraft and first responder connections--has evaporated from the news like an Al Gore masseuse.

It's in the interest of the big Vegas players to evaporate that story since the entire city runs on tourism. Or at least that's the most logical excuse for that story being buried that I've heard so far. Who really knows the truth of it.

            1. mad.casual   6 years ago

Or at least that's the most logical excuse for that story being buried that I've heard so far. Who really knows the truth of it.

I would buy that in combination with the fact that all the questions people want answered are/were going to be too complicated for any given news cycle. I admit to pretty quickly relegating any/all in depth coverage of the facts to a retrospective.

        2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   6 years ago

It's worse than gun channels because hey, we can all agree gun people are a little crazy. What about people that just talk about philosophy and question things like... the pay gap, or whether or not the culture is ruled by a sinister patriarchy.

I'm firmly against any governmental action, and am suspicious (although not aggressively critical) of any government or anti-trust action. But when you have two major payment processors in the country: Mastercard and Visa, and they're starting to refuse to process payments via any platform (Patreon, Subscribestar) based on "problematic" content from the creators that exist on these platforms, that's a subject that's at least worth talking about. I think the constant referencing of Alex Jones or Milo isn't helpful at this point. It was helpful a year or two ago, but we're way past that now. The issue has already crept well past the "crazies" and is now hitting perfeclty mainstream culture.

        3. Tulpa AKA "feeling smug"   6 years ago

Bitching about private businesses not liking you again. That'll show em.

Even originally, the argument wasn't bitching for not being liked, the bitching was for selectively enforcing contracts and/or changing contracts post hoc or otherwise against the contracts.

            1. Tulpa AKA "feeling smug"   6 years ago

So, not being liked. Like I said.

That's a good policy, but the Left and its puppets in Congress would never approve. Wrongthink must be deplatformed!

I mean, it would be like if newspapers printed letters to the editor that the Left disapproved of. Anarchy would result! An occasional letter from the token gadfly gets printed, and that's good enough to check off the free speech box. So get the fuck out!

  6. esteve7   6 years ago

Reason, you're going to be so amazed when they come for you, it's frightening. Sorta like how Solzhenitsyn said the people who had it in the gulags the worst were the devote Marxists. See they were the innocent ones. Everyone else was guilty but they were there by mistake. If only Stalin knew about this!

Eventually it will be a 'hate crime' to oppose the minimum wage, since well why do you hate poor people! Eventually they will come for you too. Start with Alex Jones, and Milo.... hell, even a left leaning centrist in Sargon of Akkad is now on their shit list.

    1. Crusty Juggler   6 years ago

All it took for Milo to drop off the map was actually getting heard. His only shtick was not getting heard, but once he did everyone realized he was the king of lame and no one bothered with him ever again.

The worst thing imaginable for one of these whackadoodles is to get a platform have it be empty of everyone but their own hand picked yes men.

    3. Just Say'n   6 years ago

Twitter de-platformed a bunch of anti-war libertarians about a year ago (including Scott Horton) and Reason didn't seem to care or even mention it. They're going to start changing their tune now, though, because sex workers are now being targeted by these social median platforms. That says a lot about their priorities.

      1. TuIpa   6 years ago

Keep whining about that. Somebody is sure to care about it eventually.

  7. Fist of Etiquette   6 years ago

Couldn't have happened to a more disgusting creep. Alex Jones is the shame of Austin--the most Libertarian town in Texas. Listen to the whiner's screed and you NEVER hear an endorsement of a pro-choice libertarian. Jones belches a constant stream of ku-klux Tea Party paranoia that could be edited down into a 2-hour loop of hysterics. That greedy profiteers recognize in that pathetic mystic a sink of otherwise beneficial goodwill is nothing more than karma.

    1. mad.casual   6 years ago

Couldn't have happened to a more disgusting creep.

I'm dubious. Not because I think Jones to be a terrific guy but because I assume, and in some cases allegedly know, that cesspool to be much deeper by pretty non-partisan metrics.

    2. BYODB   6 years ago

Alex Jones is the shame of Austin--the most Libertarian town in Texas

No one thinks that, and in fact it is pretty close to the exact opposite of reality.

      I don't give a shit about that.
The obvious collusion going on between companies as diverse as Apple, Twitter, Patreon and VISA, scares me shitless, and it should scare you too Hank.
This is a lot more than just one company deciding they don't want his weird but legal shit on their platform anymore. This is a concerted, engineered effort to censor.

With the Overton Window now shifting 500 miles each day, it won't be too long before they come for you too, and you're to dumb to see that.

Not for much longer. Friends has now been officially denounced as transphobic: https://wapo.st/2FEnOWO

Apologies from the cast and producers are due next week.

Some private universities suppress science to flatter nonsense. Conservatives seem not only not to be bothered by that but indeed go out of their way to defend and applaud such conduct.

Some private companies desire not to be associated with right-wing nuts. Conservatives head for the fainting couches.

Conservatives try to blackball certain ladyparts clinics (and only certain ladyparts clinics) from providing services to citizens whose health care involves government funding.

Some private companies wish to exclude bigoted, false information from their communications platforms. Conservatives emulate snowflakes.

Carry on, clingers. So far as your lack of principles permits, of course.

You forgot to turn on your caps-lock, Kirkland.

I take if you've never heard of the leftists at Brown pulling a study on rapid onset gender dysphoria. It was scientifically valid but gave the far left radicals a sad, so it had to go

I found Alex Jones ridiculous but I love Paul Joseph Watson's commentaries, so I just watch those.
