Don't Cry for Kat Timpf, Cry for America Instead
Americans are becoming increasingly intolerant with each other over politics, and have special wrath for people who do not stay in identifiable partisan and even geographical lanes. This does not end well, people.

Let's be clear: I am not asking you to feel sorry for Kat Timpf.
Yes, the 30-year-old television commentator and National Review writer was chased out of a Brooklyn bar a few weeks ago by a shouty woman enraged that Timpf works for Fox News Channel. Must have been unpleasant, especially considering it wasn't her first time being physically confronted by angry strangers.
But you know what else is unpleasant? Being separated from your toddler at the U.S.-Mexico border. Watching your entire community burn to the ground. Living a life less luxe than a New York gal about town whose birthday parties make Page Six.
So let's not talk about Kat, let's talk about you. You who pivoted before I did to the whataboutism in the paragraph above. You who were already irritated at reading yet again about a non-Democrat being inconvenienced in public. You who are saying to yourself, "Fox News is toxic. It's poisoning my dad's brain. All collaborators are fair game to be shunned."
Here's the question for you: Do you think this ends well? Because it doesn't.
As it happens, Timpf is one of very few Trump-skeptical libertarians working at 1211 Avenue of the Americas. When we were both on the libertarian-leaning "Kennedy" program on Fox Business recently, she said stuff like, "Oh, I'm personally not scared of the [immigrant] caravan. I think that Trump's done an excellent job of making people scared." Hound her from the building, and that's one less non-#MAGA commentator on dad's TV.
Not that Timpf's views actually matter to her antagonists. "None of these people have even been able to tell me what exactly I have said or done myself that they had a problem with," she told The Hill. The problem, one darkly suspects, is that she looks the part of Fox News villain — blond, pretty, false eyelashes that she refuses to take off when carousing in Brooklyn's massive bloc of precincts that voted over 90 percent for Hillary Clinton.
Increasingly, Americans do not tolerate people who do not stay in identifiable political and even geographical lanes. There is probably no more hated politician right now than the temperamentally centrist lame-duck Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.). Acres of pixels are expended most every time a perceived center-right type is hired by a reliably left-leaning news outlet — Kevin Williamson at The Atlantic, Bari Weiss at The New York Times, Hugh Hewitt at MSNBC.
These are successful public figures, so again, shed no tears. Think instead, in this Thanksgiving season, about your family, which probably includes members of the opposing tribe. According to a Survey Monkey poll before the midterm election, 61 percent of Democrats think the phrase "racist/sexist/bigoted" applies generally to the Republican Party, while 54 percent of Republicans think the Democratic Party is "spiteful." More than one in five members of each bloc think the other can be rightly described as "evil."
This is not a good place to be, America.
We are careening dangerously from a high-trust to a low-trust society. We trust one another less; we trust government and other mediating institutions less. This trend, which like many of our pathologies predates and arguably helped give rise to the Trump presidency, has ominous consequences.
High-trust societies have lower transaction costs, lower crime rates and less corruption. People are nicer and better behaved when they're reasonably confident that the local grocer won't steal their credit card information and the IRS won't audit them based on their politics.
Low-trust countries are clannish, unable to develop the civil institutions of a free society, and those in power tend to use government authority like a club to punish political enemies. The resulting disorder builds demand for strongmen, for more centralized state power. None of this is good.
When President Trump accuses Democrats, without evidence, of "electoral corruption" in the Arizona Senate race (even as the local Republican candidate handles her loss with dignity), he is behaving like a caudillo from a low-trust country. When Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) says Republicans "can't win elections fairly; they win elections by redistricting and reapportionment and voter suppression," he too is contributing to the very dysfunction he claims to resist .
It's damnably difficult to break out of this cycle, at least politically: As trust declines between the two main parties, untrustworthy behavior spikes. There are villains among us in politics, though thankfully some — such as the odious voter-fraud fabulist Kris Kobach in Kansas — get fired by voters.
But we can start closer to home with the recognition that our friends and family aren't evil just because some of them have different ideologies or political affiliations. In a country of pluralities and coalitions and minority rights instead of heavy-handed majoritarian rule, we are cursed — and also blessed — to live with one another. We might as well learn how to peaceably share a drink.

Increasingly, Americans do not tolerate people who do not stay in identifiable political and even geographical lanes.
Increasingly, some Americans are intolerant of the strange and unidentifiable. I've spoken to plenty of partisans who aren't losing their minds over opposing viewpoints. But who's going to get vocal on social media about their weariness with idiotic battle lines? Who's going to be marching with signs suggesting everyone keep calm and talk things out one issue at a time? The only ones you see are the ones making a show of assaulting - yes, assaulting - off-the-clock Fox News talkers.
In conclusion, pushing for the strengthening of public institutions as a remedy for anything is a strange way for a libertarian magazine to inch closer to its annual webathon.
That's not what he did. (lol)
The laugh was parenthetic but I'll take it.
I see we are plagued by Hihn this weekend.
Plagued by Hihn would be a good username on this site.
Hmmmm........
"Increasingly, some Americans are intolerant of the strange and unidentifiable. I've spoken to plenty of partisans who aren't losing their minds over opposing viewpoints."
Yeah this is not a "both sides!!1" issue. The people losing their damn minds are on the left. Not everyone on the left, but the people being the most intolerant are those screeching about the other side being intolerant. As usual, non-progressives are just trying to go about their daily lives only to be accosted by progs who are incapable of leaving their political insanity out of the most mundane aspects of existence.
And, right on schedule, here comes Welch to (pseudo not) blame one of the left's victims. And largely for not being a member of an approved victim class.
Way to go identity boy!
This is my shocked face. Immediately followed by my 'kiss my ass and maybe then i'll toss a nickel in your fundraiser bucket' face.
It may be inconvenient, but that doesn't make it any less true. How many leftists are getting chased out of restaurants by right wing mobs?
You can talk all you want about the extreme left and the extreme right being mirror images, but they're not. It's only the left going after people in their private lives. Engaging in no platforming, attacking people in restaurants and airports, having mobs surround somebody's house.
They're not mirror images, no matter how much you think they ought to be. At this moment in history, the left is enormously worse.
That's contingent. It didn't have to be, it doesn't have to be that way in the future. But TODAY, that's the way things are.
Quit fucking with the simplistic, more anger-inducing meme! How can we hate each other more unless we believe that hating each other more is justified by the way we already hate each other?
Reason is "libertarian" in the same way that Bernie Sanders is "liberal".
' "libertarian" magazine '
FTFY
Screw that! We can feel bad for both!
Should we not feel bad if she were physically intimidated and chased out of a bar for being black, or gay, or Jewish? Is the 14th Amendment now supposed to be voided along with the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th?
Just because she is a libertarian rather than a visible minority does not mean it's okay to treat her that way. Had she been black and this has happened, no one would be saying we should feel bad not for her but only for the country.
The answer to your second question is yes.
You can "feel" whatever you want, but your feelings have nothing to do with the Constitution. The Constitution prohibits discrimination by government, it does not prohibit discrimination by private parties.
It's both legally and morally OK to be nasty to people you disagree with politically.
Legal, yes, moral, not in a million years.
Depends on what you disagree with them on. Like, I?m not rally sure it is immoral to be nasty to someone who wants you or someone else shot..
Never mind morality; being nasty to someone who wants you shot is an ineffective way of dealing with the situation.
When you get nasty, you confirm his opinion that you need shooting. Being nasty can also convince impartial onlookers that you need shooting.
OTOH responding with grace, even if it doesn't change your opponent's mind, can convince onlookers (and the legal system) that you are the better person.
Being civil or uncivil is your choice. Surrendering that choice to the other person's behavior is a weakness.
We used to learn this from our parents. "Do unto others..." "Hate the sin, love the sinner." "Sticks and stones can break my bones; words will never harm me." "If you can't say something good about someone, don't say anything." "Learn to be a good winner, and a good loser."
Even, if despite your efforts at non-violently resolving the conflict, the situation degenerates into a deadly force scenario, it is quite possible to politely shoot him between the eyes. At least under Texas law, your restraint in not provoking him will make your legal, and your moral position much stronger.
Or that it is immoral to be nasty to Tony or lc1789 (I apologize in case I?m repeating myself).
I make no apologies for discriminating against people who want to kill me, throw me in jail, discriminate against me, or rob me. If you consider that "immoral" then your moral compass is broken.
"The Constitution prohibits discrimination by government, it does not prohibit discrimination by private parties."
No, but what it does prohibit states from doing is discriminating in protecting people from private parties.
Which means that, if they'll stop a lynch mob going after a white, they have to stop a lynch mob going after a black.
Being chased out of a public place, that's assault. It's a crime. Per the 14th amendment, state governments can't discriminate between people in terms of who gets protected against assault, and who doesn't.
So, the restaurant says, "We don't like your kind, we're not going to serve you. Please leave.", that's OK. I don't have to like it, but they're within their rights, even if there are illegitimate laws against it.
But somebody else threatening you until you flee the restaurant? Nope, that's a crime.
I suspect the US was only a high trust country for a short time, say from WWII to the Vietnam war, WWII forced the country to come together to defeat a common enemy that had attacked us. The government won the people's trust not because it deserved it but because the people had to. Then LBJ came along and the chant became "LBJ lied and 50,000 died". WWII created an unnatural situation in the US. We were the only power that had not been destroyed economically. The American way looked invincible. Then reality set in.
I do not think this is true. Church/religion and a more common background used to unite America more than it does now. Not to mention fear of the USSR during the Cold War. Now we are without a common philosophy/religion, we have no common enemy, and we increasingly do not look like eachother. Furthermore, we stupidly celebrate our divisions and seperateness, not celebrate out shared heritage or highlight the fantastic common background we share.
This hardly sounds like a recipe for a high trust society.
Sure like slavery, Reconstruction and other assorted differences. Religion only united unless you were Catholic/Protestant/Jewish/Baptist. Tribalism has always been part of the US. One only has to look at the political cartoons of 19th century. Do you think segregation brought us together? I think we only came together against an external enemy but have always had divisions based on region, religion, ethnic and race.
I do agree with you on what we celebrate versus what we should celebrate. But that may be the human condition.
It wasn't tribal politics that led to the decline of trust; tribal politics is a symptom, not a cause. The decline in trust starts when it becomes obvious there's two sets of rules, one for them and another for us. And then it becomes a matter of life and death whether you're an us or a them. The foundation of a civil society is the Rule of Law and when the laws become whatever the ruling party says they are, you damn sure want to be a member of the ruling party.
Where is the Reverend to point out that this shouty, bigoted clinger is just an uneducated rube from the failing backwater of Brooklyn?
Seems to me that superstitious tribalism is problem that's unfortunately not confined to only certain areas. Idiots are everywhere and on both sides.
As you just demonstrated!
LOL. Project much?
You know, it's a shame that you once again fell into the tired old left wing vs right wing trap after you invented The World's Shortest Political Quiz and popularized the concept of a libertarian vs authoritarian axis. What happened to you, man?
Did they apply a caged rat to your face at the Ministry of Truth until you broke down and proclaimed your love for Big Brother? Well, I hope you find your way again. Don't let the statist bastards grind you down.
David Nolan is a Hihn sock if you didn't know.
Hihn, your idiocy is documented. Now go to hospice and die.
David Nolan - Sock = Hihn
100% agree.
Reason's Commentariat is among the very worst. The ONLY political site with unmoderated comments is like a magnet for the haters, as they get barred or excluded everywhere else.
It has very little to do with trust, and everything to do with raging hatred. The animals are in charge,
Other than that, well done.
Try going to the Washington Post's comments section sometime and making any comment not in agreement with Progressive doctrine, and you'll see what hate is. The Post may moderate foul language, but they allow anything up to and including wishes for a horrible death in any comments excoriating those not sufficiently doctrinaire.
The Post is advocating for democracy to die in the darkness.
Just like the city it's named after.
The Post and NYT are merely totally-biased, Democrat rags, similar to most of the MSM. While they don't often outright lie, their selective emphasis on particular topics, while ignoring even more important ones (both instances in favor of Democrat politicians or liberal causes), renders them totally useless as reliable news sources. A "free" press is only beneficial to society when journalists hold everyone's feet to the fire, regardless of political persuasion. While there has never been perfectly unbiased reporting, most media outlets have been bought out by wealthy liberals over the past 50 years and traditionally conservative or neutral journalists replaced with like-minded liberals. This bias reached a totally unashamed crescendo after the election of Trump, as all guns have been trained solely on defeating and removing him.
Sounds like fun!
"Reason's Commentariat is among the very worst."
Thank you!
Exhibit 1: "David Nolan"
Haha. Or Hihn as he is more commonly known.
"Silence the Infidels!"
This "Libertarian Moment" brought to you by Hihn the Loon.
says the pretty much one guy to get banned on the unmoderated comment board.......
Shapiro interviews Harper. Matt and Nick may want to close their ears on his takes on immigration and trade - which I agree with. But hey, we're two, white, bigoted Canadians (he of faith and me not hostile to religion) who haven't checked their white privilege.

The modern progressive left are trouble makers; nihilists even to some extent. Ignorant beyond belief mixed with faux self-righteous zeal. They're The Devils described by Dostoevsky. They're the ones causing problems on campuses and in the streets; chasing people out of restaurants and shouting them down. Worse, the idiots who roam around the Democrat ranks (pulling more and more left) egg this shit on.
The left and only the left. Keep the blame squarely where it belongs.
M'kay?
/kicks hardened snow in orphan's eyes.
And every day you clowns get on your high horse and push for utopian garbage that is impossible in the real world. And then when you're done calling everyone who disagrees a racist sexist homophobe, you write articles about how we shouldn't worry about leftists chasing everyone out of restaurants.
Where's the example of lefties getting banned from social media platforms? Where's the stories of lefties getting screamed out of stores?
This publication says its libertarian but beyond the occasional "socialism isn't great" articles, you do nothing but prop up people who would gladly institute socialism if given power to. No ones really scared of the caravan, we just don't want to pay for shit because you leftists want some global one world order. We literally saw this with DACA less than a decade ago. Give lefties power and they will redistribute wealth while called dissenters racist.
Hillary Clinton just came out against open borders in Europe. Says it's going to cripple the economy and promote far right hatred, aka citizens will be pissed the government picked non citizens over citizens. Same talking points as Trump.
Where's your article about that? Where's your pant suited god now Welch?
"...aka citizens will be pissed the government picked non citizens over citizens. "
Yes, see recent brick-bat http://reason.com/blog/2018/11.....ict-limits for VERY closely associated bullshit from the Brits... Is it asking too much to just turn a blind eye to race-sex-creed-etc.? So the likes of Hillary, having failed to get simple non-discrimination implemented, now say that we must go another way, and let the fascists take over instead? Holy Shiites, what next?!??!
Hey, ya got a good like on Hillary-style Euro-fascist thinking here?
I don't think it's fascist for citizens to worry about US citizens first, or any citizenry first, when the government makes it very clear they only care about creating more dependents and expanding their scope. Shrink the government, stop taxing us to give to others, and I will applaud more immigration.
This idea that the right is trying to stop all brown people from coming here because they're brown, and therefore dangerous or less capable, is a straw man. Very few people think that, and they wouldn't last a day in this comment section. First generation immigrants are a tax burden, it's been heavily documented. Remove the welfare state that garners dependence, remove the lefties that would grant anyone and everyone rights to our tax dollars.
I hate to say that Hillary is right. This is how actual racists gain power. she failed to push progressive utopia, and the only way back into the political arena is to get peoples heads out of the clouds and pull back on the idea that we can feed and clothe the rest of the world.
We actually could do that one day, but it won't be through bigger government, it will be through technological breakthroughs that will only happen in the free market.
The free market... ya know, the think libertarians are supposed to care about
I see and acknowledge all of your points, actually.
I am thankful to live in the USA, where we have far more Hispanic immigrants and fewer Islamic ones than Britain does. I may be a racist, but Hispanic folks aren't often Hispanofascists, while we do have Islamofascists. The ongoing bloodlust in Pakistan (wanting to kill a Christian lady for supposedly disrespecting Islam) scares the crap out of me, and I'd hate to live in England and get intimidated by Paki fascists. See http://reason.com/blog/2018/11.....urned-away ...
Well anyway, a huge sin that I see is that post 9-11, would-be Hispanic immigrants are being punished for the sins of the Islamofascists. Sad to say, group discrimination is the best we can do, at times. We're punishing the wrong group here, to at least some fairly large extent.
Yeah man all around, it is too bad that we can NOT have Libertopia... NO welfare state at ALL, coupled with open borders, would be WAY cool! The THIRD leg needed to near-perfect things is for Government Almighty to wither away with respect to licences; AKA, permission to earn an honest living. God bless the Germans and Angela Merkel for having tried with all those refugees from Syria... A HUGE, major reason it didn't work out is Germans being even more constipated than Americans about licenses and restrictions in the way of earning a living... OF COURSE the refugees are going to end up on welfare if we (or the Germans) do not allow them to work!!!!
I'll agree that Hispanic immigrants do not pose as great a potential threat as Islamic immigrants. However, most Hispanic immigrants are poor and unskilled and will immediately be placed on welfare, Medicaid, free schooling, etc. We are $21T in debt as a nation - can we really afford to expand our already-bloated public assistance rolls further? I think not. In addition, Democrats are relying on the vast majority of new Hispanic immigrants voting Democrat, in order to receive even more outrageous promised benefits. A true democracy is only viable as long as people vote responsibly for the benefit of the country - when voting is based primarily on getting unsustainable "goodies" for oneself, you get Venezuela. I believe that is where we are heading.
Don't count on ANYTHING Hillary says. She is a career criminal, and would back Satan if it got her elected.
Oooops,stupid typo above a ways...
"Hey, ya got a good like on Hillary-style Euro-fascist thinking here?"
Was looking for a link, not a like... Anyone got a link on what Hillary has been saying lately, about this right-ward turn of hers about ???? immigration and borders in Europe, and so on?
Google Hillary Clinton Immigration. Posting links on this site is a pita.
OK then...

Hillary Clinton: Europe must curb immigration to stop rightwing populists
By the way, just strip out the "s" in https:// and Reason.com will auto-shorten your long links...
Thank you!
Hillary's angle is not because mass immigration of low skilled workers is bad (as argued by plenty of people) for Europe as a whole but because it will put the 'deplorables' back in their place.
Her contempt for people is beyond belief.
Pant suited? And here I thought she was being paid to display the latest fashion from the Mao Zedong collection!
Mao's styles are totally out of date - don't you know? Hillary is modeling the latest in the Kim Jong-un collection!
Hilary only wears pant suits to cover her goat-like lower-half. I wonder how she gets her cloven hooves into those shoes?
Libertarians are the only ones not pushing for some type of utopia. Saying that the best to achieve a decent level peace and prosperity is not the same as saying everything is going to be perfect.
When you stare into the abyss, the abyss will stare back at you. Drops mic.
Yes, we are already staring into the abyss, which has two lobes... The Trumpista / TrumpfenFuhrer lobe, and the campus thought control / lefty PC lobe. The razor-sharp edge between the two lobes is there for impaling those who try to think for themselves, and who respect individual freedoms.
This. Very well said.
Thanks for cheering me up a bit. I'm very sad due to my realization this morning that a person I used to admire and respect for not just walking on but helping to raise up and popularize that razor-sharp edge, David Nolan, has thrown in with the authoritarians who seek to have TOP.MEN do their thinking for them.
I've read about people from either side of the stupid duopoly who woke up and became libertarian, but here we have a prominent member of our own ranks who shall we say has been seduced by the dumb side of the force.
I don't want to jump to conclusions, but the "David Nolan" in these comments may not be the same person as the libertarian figure of the same name - the latter, according to Wikipedia, has been dead for 8 years.
You mean he is ***STILL*** dead, after these 8 years!??! Who knew?! So David Nolan is communicating to us (right here on these pages) from the "beyond the beyond"!!! He is doing what Houdini promised us that he'd do, but never did!!!
The only other slightly-reliable method that I know of, for communicating with the "beyond the beyond", is to use this below address, FYI...

"I don't want to jump to conclusions, but the "David Nolan" in these comments may not be the same person as the libertarian figure of the same name - the latter, according to Wikipedia, has been dead for 8 years."
Hihn's brain died about that time.
Yeah, they will chase Kat Timpf out of a restaurant and probably Greg Gutfield too because he is just as tiny and a lot older than he looks, but they aren't going to get stupid with Tyrus. Even TDS Democrats aren't that stupid.
They'll chase out Welch if someone recognizes him as having been on Fox at some point.
I would love to have progtards engage me in this manner. Their entrails would make fine decorations.
I cannot leave the country without proper photo ID. The world has always been unfair from some perspective. Just don't make bad choices.
So, what kind of restaurant allows its customers to get this kind of treatment? Couldn't a burly waiter kick the shouty woman out?
Nah, its pussies all the way down.
Presumably a restaurant whose owner agrees with the shouty woman.
As this distrust is a direct result of government intruding into daily life more and more, to the point that it is literally more effective steering government against your enemies than minding your own business, the only way to solve this is cut back the scale and scope and coerciveness of government.
Yeah, when who the president is makes you this angry maybe you should stop pushing more power and money to Washington. No power, no problem.
However, leftist can't grasp this concept, even when it is pointed out to them. To their way of thinking, government is a benign creation, dedicated to altruism and if anyone troublesome to their way of thinking wins it is because of some form of -ism.
Sadly, too many jagoffs think that wielding the hammer of government against their "enemies" is their God-given Right. At this point, I'd almost welcome a switch of teams to see just how far down the low-trust society we've gone. Obama was goddamn awful enough, with his smarmy "I'm a Uniter" bullshit followed on by Drumpf's caustic "Fuck You, That's Why!" incivility that I think I just want to see it all burn. I'm sick and goddamn tired of getting it from both sides of know-nothing partisan twats.

Goddamn squirrels!
For the first time in history we are all being exposed to the true unedited opinions of the people we share our country with, and it appears we are uniformly appalled at how insane everyone else sounds.
This new phenomenon is not going to go away, and it is my profoundest hope that we finally develop an appropriate level of trust for anyone that we grant power to.
The Founders, although not omniscient, certainly shared a concern about too much democracy. Perhaps one objective parameter we have fucked up is promoting ever more popular input (either voting or shouting).
Americans hating each other or writing hateful things about each other is nothing new. We used to address it by living in different states with different laws and different cultures, with only a minimal national government for defense.
The problems we're facing is that the political elites are trying to impose national rule and a single culture on everybody. Idahoans would have to care about New York nuttiness if it didn't affect their lives and their tax bills.
Yeah, and one side more than the other wants big, monolithic national government. The do give lip service to "states' rights" occasionally, but in the end have no use for States.
Sadly, I think most people in Congress want big, monolithic national government, regardless of party affiliation. It comes with the job.
Just stop granting them power. Then it doesn't matter if they're trustworthy.
Exactly right
I have read a few of her pieces on NRO. They seemed vapid and snarky.
I am not surprised that people find her irritating without being able to articulate exactly what she said.
And since Bubba, with an I.Q. of 50, thinks she is vapid and snarky, the rest of us should think the same. Sorry, Bubba, your name fairly SCREAMS "ignore the ignorant bastard."
Also, Bubba, there is something which you are unaware of, namely free speech, which many low I.Q. folks like you think should be abolished, and you also fail to realize that your comment is vapid and snarky, with the added "benefit" of being moronic.
WOW, is reason going bat shit crazy? The only kids being separated from their parents at the border are kids whose parents try to come to the U.S. illegally. Is Reason now in favor of breaking U.S. law, and then celebrating or defending those who do?!!? If Reason and others think the immigrants should be allowed entry into the U.S. regardless of the illegality of the same, then Reason and like-minded folks should back the changing of immigration law, NOT the avoidance of the same. "Reason" is now becoming unreasonable, not to mention partners in crime, by suggesting illegal immigration is a GOOD thing.
It is funny that Welch is decrying regarding your political adversaries as evil while using heated rhetoric in the same article.
I?m not saying the US immigration law is all wrong, but yes, in case a law is immoral (like, drug prohibtion or prostitution prohibition, or zillion of stupid regulations), it IS immoral to enforce that law.
Isn't the "morality" of a law up to individual discretion? I can think of a whole bunch of laws that I may disagree with or find inconvenient - by your logic, I guess I should be able to simply ignore them?
I don't see what the problem is - the body politic needs a good enema every so often, and it can't be accomplished with words, 'moderate' or otherwise. Be realistic - there's going to be a few casualties before this thing ends, and you'll only be a target if you're in the front row. Personally, I'll be eating popcorn.
The US never was a "high trust society", it was a republic composed of largely autonomous states which were individually high trust societies. You had protestant states, Catholic states, WASP states, German farmer states, redneck states, frontier states, etc., each with their own cultures and societies. When you try to turn such a diverse collection of individually high-trust states into a single nation state, it necessarily becomes low trust.
Of course, worshiping at the altar of the nation state is what Reason-style "libertarianism" is all about these days.
I am looking forward to the first time some proggy 'direct action now' idiot goes after the wrong person and gets beaten badly. This tribalism bullshit is ridiculous and needs to be nipped in the bud. Every scoietal failure, every war, every genocide spawned from tribalistic insanity. And historically nationalism is the only thing that has mitigated the worst aspects of tribalism.
I'm looking forward to it as well.
But I don't think it's coming.
They've attacked old people, kicked women in the face, shot and killed numerous people, caused that Charlottesville death (yeah, I said it) and we are still bending over backwards to be rational about all of it.
We'll be waiting for someone to 'do something' long after the point we smilingly walk with the local Antifa officers to the Soylent plant.
Because we all have the idea in our heads that if we do more than try to talk our way out of this we're being racist or sexist, or homo/islamo/trans/xeno phobic and it's been drilled into our heads that we are intrinsically wrong.
So we're only allowed to plead--or keep our heads down.
You lost the culture war because half-educated, superstitious, stale-thinking bigots lose in the modern, successful, educated marketplace of ideas.
You've been on the defense -- whimpering and muttering bitterly as progress has occurred despite your wishes and efforts -- throughout your lifetime, and that is not going to change.
Your betters will continue to improve America with reason, tolerance, science, liberty, education, modernity, and inclusivity while right-wingers cling to backwardness and pine for good old days that never existed.
Carry on, clingers. So long as your liberal-libertarian betters permit, anyway.
Oh shut up you toothless inbred.
Your betters are speaking. And I AM your better, hick--never forget that. When your drug filled cum soaked body is moldering in your sister-son's trailer after your inevitable fentanyl overdose, Azathoth will be there to laugh at how we all saw through your hillbilly posturing.
The vermin you ape have lost the culture war and they don't even see it.
In their relentless pursuit of identity politics they have created a mechanism that specifies identity over and over again --people no longer want to share even the same gender as another, never mind the same race, creed, or ethnicity. Everyone is abandoning the pretense of commonality for an ever more specific and isolated individuality.
I am no longer Azathoth, mad, blind daemon-sultan who sits at the Center of All things, I am Azathoth, pansexual, pan gender, pantheistic pandimensional--hell, if I kept some goat's legs extruded I'd BE Pan. But I don't. And so I stand alone, there is absolutely nothing like me. And your puling masters DEMANDED this in pursuit of power.
Idiots.
*Golf Clap*
'Tis a thing of beauty!
The Right was losing the culture war because they've refused to fight back *in kind*, with relentless in group preference and out group attack.
The fundamental moral mistake of the Right, is mistaking complicity in one way societal rules as supporting the rules , instead of betraying them.
One way ceasefire is surrender
One way rule of law is subjection
One way civility is subservience
More and more of the Right are figuring that out.
More and more are getting UnCucked.
They've only just begun fighting back a little.
Fuck you, Welch. No one is buying your act.
Timpf has a right to go about in public without being harassed by your comrades.
That illegal immigrant has absolutely no right to come into the country we all pay for without the permission of a majority of us. And neither she, nor the child she has with her has that permission.
No matter how much you retards like to pretend that, except for humans, all animals live in peace, sharing territory and resources so that each gets what they need, while contributing what they can.
Asshole.
She needs someone with her to go all Ray Liotta on one of them.

Sure, but should the child be subjected to extreme suffering because his or her mother did something wrong? Yes, people who are sent to prison, are separated from their children, but at the very least: 1) the children are not imprisoned, 2) the children are usually allowed to visit and 3) it is still immoral to imprison people for victimless crimes.
The children ARE often imprisoned.
They're handed over to CPS and forced into foster homes.
And they're not allowed to see their parents unless a court allows it.
Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.
Ayuleen, both mother and child should both be deported immediately. They are both illegal aliens.
Why not? I have lost my taste for political correctness. I now call a bigot a bigot, and believe it is one of the great recent achievements of America's liberal-libertarian mainstream that our vestigial bigots no longer wish to be known as bigots.
Accuracy is a virtue.
"I have lost my taste for political correctness."
No, you're the embodiment of it.
Good old Arty one note, he's approaching White Indian levels of monomania.
Never stop being the angry ignorant person you are.
Might have well told him to remain a carbon based life form.
Might as well have...
"I hate Americans soooooo much!"
It would be easier to take Welch's plaint on this seriously if he and Reason's other writers were not contributors to raising the rhetorical heat on their pet issues. Enforcing immigration laws is not, on its face, anti-immigrant and certainly not racist. Pointing out the media's reluctance with reporting accurately on facts that do not fit their preferred narrative is not an attack on freedom of the press. There is more of a bit of the pot calling the kettle black in Welch's article.
The breakdown of trust is caused by a large portion of the political class seeing the government's job is regulate any risk and self-responsibility out of life. If civility is the responsibility of official authority then people do not see it as their responsibility to be polite in public. What happened to Kat Timpf is a person who is abusing the standards of a polite society, thinking the rules will protect them as they themselves violate those rules.
People who want to seize my property, restrict my liberty, censor my speech, prohibit me from owning arms ARE EVIL. Socialists, communists, stalinists are evil. Wake up and realize with what we are dealing. Libertarians carrying on like hippies of the right is all well and good, but we are engaged in a life or death struggle with the Left. It's time to cut out the Munich Agreement, Let's-Get-Along-Crap.
Recall that in Atlas Shrugged a "pirate" wages war against the navy. Dagny Taggart stone shoots and kills a guard. And in the the Allegory of the Taggart Tunnel some 300 people die including the role call of collectivist/altruist characters I'm sure many of you well know. They were evil, were complicit in their deaths, and deserved to die.
This is the struggle we face.
My first choice is to divide the county in two, the India 1947 option. I no longer have any love for Leftist Americans, and indeed wish them grave harm. It's either that, or The Russian Civil War option, and we openly start killing each other. Or, and this is the Left's choice, the Bolshevik 1917/Nazi 1933 option, where they take over and kill us.
Being a Libertarian doesn't mean being a pacifist. The war is upon us; either wage it or die on your knees.
- An Objectivist, a donator to the Reason Foundation and son of a refugee from Stalin's USSR.
My first choice is to divide the county in two,
We cannot go this way. An election map showing district level voting shows why. The nation is largely a sea of red that surrounds deep blue pinpoints.
They hold very little actual land. They hold nearly no land that produces the necessities of life.
Those deep blue pinpoints are entirely dependent on that red sea.
This is, as they like to say, problematic.
Additionally, while they may see themselves in the roles of the communists and nazis, they are not.
If this actually manages to get to the open warfare stage before we, who are not fighting no matter how much we cry that we will wage the needed war, hand over our weapons with the vain hope that this will end the strife, it will not go well for them.
They are weak. Pathetically so. Their ONLY strength is that they have managed to get their ideas into our heads.
And that may be the death of us, and America.
Splitting in two would be much better than what we have now.
Sure some rural people in blue states would feel put upon, but the better off among them could move to a state with a friendlier government.
And some big city lefty types in red states would be aghast at the policies of the right, but they could easily move to another city in a blue state.
As it is now, there is no escape and everyone fights for power over all.
They wouldn't try this shit with Oderus Urungus.
We are careening dangerously from a high-trust to a low-trust society. We trust one another less, we trust government and other mediating institutions less. This trend, which like many of our pathologies predates and arguably helped give rise to the Trump presidency, has ominous consequences.
Y'know, it's funny you should mention that as one of the major factors that break down high trust societies is the rapid introduction of others not interested in assimilating into said high trust society. The idea that the caravan, on its own, is a threat is nonsense, true. But only a complete and total fool or someone lying through their teeth assumes that it is on its own, that left unopposed it would not quickly become the preferred method of illegal immigration, and that a supermajority of those in it are actually interested into assimilating into American society.
"There is probably no more hated politician right now than the temperamentally centrist lame-duck Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.)."
Which is why mobs of angry conservatives are always chasing him out of restaurants, right?
You know criticizing a politician's positions and actions is the same as harassing him.
Back when prop 6 passed in CA and republicans passed some fiscally conservative policies in that brief tea party period, the democrats used to complain about the tyranny of the majority. "Slavery had popular support too" - remember those kinds of lines?
Now democrats obsess over "house popular vote" and complain that populous states like CA only have two senators.
When they're winning, these people are perfectly fine with ramming through all of their agendas with a simple majority. Cities like SF can simply pass nonsensical taxes with local votes or city council vote. Trump can't pass anything without the house, senate, and perhaps the SC.
The mob tends to lean left, and that's been true since the French revolution. The democrat party is fueled by mobs. Mob action led to a bogus FBI investigation on an innocent man despite zero evidence. Mobs chase political opponents out of eateries. Mobs burn down cities in response to unjust police actions. I'm sure someone told Robespierre "this ain't gonna end well for you one of these days". But mobs are mobs because they have no capacity to reason. Their cities will continue to burn because their chosen leaders will vote forest management bills and continue to build housing in the SAME areas that burn over and over again.
They do what they want to do. That's it.
Civilization ends when people stop acting civilized. So, any day now.
There is way too much bull-shit media designed to keep people angry, fearful, hating, and desperate. We have 24/7 news that is 95% adrenaline-soaked partisan opinion....that discourages critical thought and fuels confirmation bias. We lock ourselves into echo chambers and imagine that it has no consequence on how we ultimately think and interact. Our political system was designed to create blended solutions. Politicians who now try to cut deals are despised by ideologues and immediately "primaried"....because of the anger and desperation baked into the system. We still live in relatively prosperous and peaceful times....and have significant ability to make of our lives what we will. Our anger, hate, and fear is largely irrational...and hugely counter-productive.As long as it remains profitable to stoke division for the sake of division, we will politically flounder...and have increasingly ridiculous leaders (if that is possible).

She's a funny lady.
"I'm not on the left"
She just answered her own question.
Anyway, Welch is full of it. Timpf (or Cruz for that matter) should be able to sit in a restaurant (where they are paying customers) without randos harassing them.
If I were the proprietor of any of these restaurants, those dirty hippies would be kicked out pronto. Fuck them, harassing paying customers.
"But I've attacked the Bad Right for most of my career, I'm not one of *them*! Do it to Julia! Not to me! "
I love the forlorn cries of those who fed the crocodile, hoping it would eat them last.
Sounds like Justice.
I've said it before - "careening dangerously from a high-trust to a low-trust society" is the correct response to a government that has grown massively in power to thousands of vague, unconstitutionally broad regulations with the associated hundreds of regulatory agencies promulgating hundreds of thousands of regulations; whose debt is increasing at almost a trillion dollars per year; and which is at war around the world and whose prosecutors are literally waging war on honest citizens and opposition party officials. It may not be "good" - the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and World War II were not "good" - but it may be necessary!
I was manning a Republican booth at a local event in our heavily blue Seattle suburb last August when a raving Democrat union guy backed by two lady cheerleaders stated shouting at me and scattering our literature to the wind, etc. I went instantly into survival mode learned from my career in corrections, retreating as far as I could in the small tent and not responding in any way that might escalate matters at all, waiting for some type of help to arrive.
I was expecting police, because their presence had been thick at the event, but what happened was something like a small flash mob of three or four people just materialized, confronted the jerk and his supporters in a tense and very loud nose-to-nose exchange, and then just vanished an instant before the cops arrived. So did Mr. Jerk and crew. I was left with a mess to clean up and a lot of explanations to people in uniform.
Thereafter police presence almost hovered in our area.
Union hacks are the best. They cannot articulate their beliefs beyond union hall talking points. They are the poster children for useful idiots and always festoon themselves in union regalia because, by God, they must always cram their identity down your throat.
I am crying Kat Timpf, she is sweet and smart and didn't deserve the mean treatment.
All the best Kat !
"Americans are becoming increasingly intolerant with each other over politics"
Welch generalizes the Left's violence and hatred to all of America.
This is what passes for "non-partisan" at the new postmodern Reason.
"Let's be clear: I am not asking you to feel sorry for Kat Timpf."
Any mention of Leftist attacks on the Right are always premised with an obligatory "Hey, I really hate everyone on the Right too, but ..."
Yes, I'll be waiting for someone to 'do something' long after the point we smilingly walk with the local Antifa officers!
Another silly article that thinks that people crossing our border illegally are due some special status and not subject to our laws and then comparing it to an.American going about their business and being abused.
This guy is an idiot as the things have little in common and a person has a right to their opinon with out you attacking them in a public place for it.
But you know what else is unpleasant? Being separated from your toddler at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Fuck you Matt.
Those people made a choice to willfully break another country's laws, knowing full well that being separated from their child could be a result. Do you feel bad for idiots who take a toddler into other dangerous and illegal situations?
Disingenuous, lying hack.
"But you know what else is unpleasant? Being separated from your toddler at the U.S.-Mexico border"
Then don't commit crimes with your kids.
Assuming they are your kids.
Not like Mexico doesn't have a huge kidnapping problem.
Easily looked up.
low trust? i think we are moving well past low trust and into 'no trust'.
i frankly, so no way out except revolution.

It is starting to get a little rough, but it is easy to overestimate how rough. We are still far from the 1850s or even the 1930s or the 1970s. There is not a civil war brewing yet. The traditional media people are no more leftist or dishonest today than they were in prior decades. They have just abandoned subtlety and dropped their former pretense of objectivity, perhaps out of frustration over becoming less influential, perhaps because they think the present environment does not require it, perhaps because today's talking heads are dumber that Cronkite, Brinkley, and their colleagues. Today's leftists politicians' agendas are little different either, and their hatred of America is probably no more intense. The present political environment may seem far more "toxic" than in the past because jackasses (and jenny asses) have easier ways to make themselves noticed these days thanks to social media, comment threads, and so on, but that may not be accurate. The fact that the most recent presidents from both major parties are arrogant jerks probably contributes to the disquiet also. I am not saying things are not going badly, only that one should not exaggerate and head for the hills yet.
