The story of the afternoon is the Washington Post reporting that Roy Moore, the Alabama ex-judge running for Senate as a Republican, initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl when he was a 32-year-old district attorney. Three other women say Moore pursued contact with them when they were teens and he was in his 30s.

  • In advance of the story's release, Moore's office sent their denials to Breitbart to apparently scoop the Post or control the response to the story. Several GOP senators are saying that if the allegations are true, Moore should step aside.
  • This is not the only new big scandal hitting. The premiere for the latest Louis C.K. movie has been cancelled in advance of a New York Times story that was published this afternoon detailing accusations by women of his sexual misconduct.
  • The neighbor accused of tackling Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and breaking his ribs has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault.
  • In your latest "dog bites man" reporting: Transportation Security Administration screeners are still doing an absolutely terrible job actually detecting weapons being smuggled into airports.
  • House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) announced this morning he's not running for re-election in 2018. He's been in Congress for nearly 25 years.

At this point I'm going to think public figures are freaks if they don't get the #metoo treatment.

    No doubt.

I suppose that "How many more should step aside?" is the question.

The neighbor accused of tackling Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and breaking his ribs has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault.

I knew Paul made the whole thing up.

He's going to lead into the current zeitgeist and claim that he was only sexually assaulting Paul...

"He's going to lead into the current zeitgeist and claim that he was only sexually assaulting Paul..."

No you've got it backwards. He's going to claim that Paul was triggering him by mowing his own lawn instead of getting a brown person to do it. That kind of class triggering is clearly a form of power control identical to sexual assault. So, clearly he was the victim of Paul's power play.

How do you plead "not guilty" when you know you're guilty? Shouldn't that be called "lying to prosecutors" or somesuch?

      1. CE   8 years ago

Or is he going to use the new "yes I broke his ribs your honor, but he's a libertarian" defense?

        1. Paulpemb   8 years ago

There was no intent to break his ribs, so it's okay. He was just extremely careless.

    1. Memory Hole   8 years ago

It's child molestation and it's all corroborated by credible disinterested witnesses and other good evidence.

      1. Juice   8 years ago

I'd like to see Moore go away as much as anyone, but why do these things so often come out 20-30 years after the fact?

        1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Being a victim of sexual assault or abuse, especially as a kid, can lead to a lot of years of shame, repression, and self-blame. A lot of times the victim has trouble facing what happened to them for years or even decades. This is one reason why it's so hard to separate out legitimate victims from opportunistic liars.

          1. John   8 years ago

Sure. But 25 years later when Moore is on the Alabama Supreme Court, this victim still can't say anything but suddenly can right after he wins the nomination for Senate? Really?

            1. Memory Hole   8 years ago

The timing makes sense because these things are buried by everyone and it takes something momentous to jar it all loose.

              1. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

It also sounds like she was tracked down and interviewed by WaPo reporters. And she gives reasons as to why she was reluctant to come forward as an adult during his earlier spells of national attention.

                1. John   8 years ago

I had not heard that. Maybe she is telling the truth. Jesus Christ is there anyone in public life who isn't a fucking degenerate?

                  1. Don't look at me.   8 years ago

                    No, there is not.

                    Agile Cyborg.

                  3. BYODB   8 years ago

She might be telling the truth, but the timing of the release combined with the fact he's been in the public eye for going on 40 years is certainly suspect. Reasons given, or not, why now of all times?

Simple: to stop him from becoming a Senator. It's the only possible explanation. What I don't understand is why Senator, why not Supreme Court or some other office. Why not when he was being blasted for the Ten Commandments issue? So many opportunities, and yet now was the time.

Suspicious, but potentially true. Sadly for the potential victim, waiting so long means there is no evidence and the statute of limitations is long-gone. Because of that, justice sailed a long time ago.

          2. SIV   8 years ago

This is one reason why it's so hard to separate out legitimate victims from opportunistic liars

Legitimate victims don't go public by first reporting it to the Washington Post

        2. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

As Miyamoto Musashi said in the quintessential martial philosophy text,Book of Five Rings, "There is timing in all things."

          1. Charles Easterly   8 years ago

            Excellent reference, halves.

        3. Memory Hole   8 years ago

One of the girl's mom was cool with it when it happened which helps explain how these things are covered over. There's moral ambiguity which confuses the victims and its natural to suppress this kind of shit. Women and children are especially reluctant to point the finger at a grown man. Delayed reporting of children molestation is pretty well a norm I think.

          1. John   8 years ago

If it is true that the Post hunted her down and that is why she is coming forward now, that makes her story a lot more credible. I can't think of a reason why someone would lie to the post about this when the Post approached them.

Assuming that is true, the guy is a fucking pervert. Sadly, the political environment is so poisoned and people are so fed up with the national media and Washington, I would not be surprised if he wins the election anyway. People hate Washington and media more than they hate guys who molest young girls.

            1. Isaac Bartram   8 years ago

...the guy is a fucking pervert.

              No, he's from Alabama. 🙂

Fourteen year old brides are common there.

              1. John   8 years ago

Well, that is another issue. She wasn't 10. She knew what she was doing. I wouldn't call it rape. But I wouldn't call it admirable either.

              2. Isaac Bartram   8 years ago

Actually, my more serious response is that having sexual desire for sexually mature women of any age is not perverted at any age for a man.

Acting on those urges towards teenage girls by an adult male may by crass, cruel, opportunistic and exploitative but it isn't perverted in anywhere near the same way as urges directed towards prepubescent children are.

                1. John   8 years ago

                  I agree with you Isaac.

Making distinctions between pedophiles and ephebophiles I see.

                  1. John   8 years ago

It is a real distinction. And ephebophile is a meaningless term since pretty much every heterosexual person in history falls under it.

                    1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I agree. I was just commenting on the fact.

                    2. Isaac Bartram   8 years ago

Some estimates give the age of Mary, the mother of god as being as young as twelve while some give the age of Joseph as being as old as ninety (remember he wasn't the one who got her knocked up).

At the time it was common for young orphans or children of poor people to be "given" to older men for "protection". some of these men were quite possibly kind protectors though it's more likely that most were exploitative bastards.

My greater point is that notions of consent or refusal by women (of any age) are a relatively new development in our human history. After all, the idea that a man could be charged with the rape of his wife only goes back to the 1970s.

                    3. John   8 years ago

Grover Cleveland married his 21 year old former ward. No kidding. And she was hot too.

                    4. fafalone   8 years ago

There's a dozen or so countries, including Italy and Germany, where it's still legal for 14 year olds to have a partner of any age. Of course there's a couple places where 12 is legal.
Historically, the first time there was even a law about such things it was set at what, 6? 120 years ago, in parts of the US, 7 was legal.
It's not the the idea of consent or refusal (outside of marriage) are new, it's the idea that people who are old enough to express their wishes (age of reason) are nonetheless not to be listened to because of our opinion on their maturity level. Depending on where the line is drawn, that goes from sensible to stupid.

      2. DJF   8 years ago

If you're comparing him to Weinstein, i think it's different psychopathologies that happen to have manifested themselves in the same way. Weinstein's a power player, and power both corrupts those who wield it and attracts the already-corrupt. His wankery was how he manifested that corruption. A lot of really funny comedians, on the other hand, mine some deep, dark shit for their humor and tend to be badly damaged human beings at the core. Damage can build character and maybe even lead to wisdom but it's more likely to create just a broken person, and thus Louis jerkin' it.

So did all of these women that claim Moore was out molesting them when they were kids think it was okay for a pervert to be on the Alabama Supreme Court but not serve in the Senate? The guy has been around for years and somehow they only thought it worth coming forward after he gets the nomination? Really?

My guess is that Alabama elects him anyway as a way to give the finger to the national media. Honestly, guys who molest teenage girls are less hated than the media in most of the country and certainly in Alabama.

    1. Memory Hole   8 years ago

I'd be surprised if there was statute limitation on prosecuting child molestation.

      1. John   8 years ago

Actually, Alabama is one of the very few states that does not have a statute of limitations for rape. So if these women are willing to put their charges under oath and have some corroboration and explanation for why they waited this long to say anything, Moore could be in some serious trouble.

        1. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Why do I feel like Alabama not having statute of limitations for rape is just some sort of Jim Crowe hold over to use against black folk?

Or am I just projecting way too much there?

          1. John   8 years ago

It might be. It also might be a reflection of the conservative values of the state and the desire to punish sex offenders. Karma can be a bitch like that.

Numero two-o, the ban applies only to stores *run by the city-state itself,* not private stores.

        1. NoVaNick   8 years ago

I guess this means that those who work in the Vatican will have to walk a few blocks into Italy for their smokes until they ban them there too, as the WHO is demanding every country do by 2030.

    2. Eidde   8 years ago

"With Italy's VAT sales tax at 22 percent, anyone who can get their hands on a coveted Vatican "commercial card" does so, since it gives them access to a world of high-end, tax-free shopping. It went roughly like "Hmmm, there sure are A LOT OF powerful men being called out for sexual misconduct towards women. But why now? Wait a minute! Remember that women's march last January?!?! OMG, It worked!!!".......yeah

    1. John   8 years ago

I think some of it is that the left was totally shocked that the pussy grabbing tape didn't kill Trump's campaign. They honestly thought that defending Clinton didn't mean they could no longer go after Republicans with sexual harassment charges. When they found out that yes they really had pissed away the power to do that by defending Clinton, they decided they wanted it back and let the media start reporting these things and making an issue of it.

    2. DRM   8 years ago

What happened is Hillary lost. With her defeat, the silence that descended on the issue in order to protect Bill Clinton finally ended. And now we're picking right back up where we were in 1991-1992 (the era of Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas, the Tailhook scandal, and Bob Packwood's resignation).

When I was a teenager in jr high, I also tried to seduce teen girls.

In response to this tweet by some douchebag named Michael Skolnik

When my four year old son, Mateo Ali said to me during the 2016 election that he wants to be @HillaryClinton when he grows up, that's all I needed to hear to know how impactful she has been and will be on our country's future. #ThankYouHillary from the bottom of my heart.

    Don Suber tweets

My 4-year-old son, Arnold Conan Bigballs said to me on election night 2016, hey Dad, want a beer? I said break out the Jim Beam tonight and Cuban cigars. Then we're going to the titty bar. Then I tossed him the keys to the Hummer and said, you're driving. He beamed.

    Well played.

    1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

We as a nation need to change. It's not okay for our kids to dream of growing up to be politicians.

      1. John   8 years ago

Or if they want to grow up to be women, at least make it an attractive woman. Wanting to grow up to be bitter, nasty hag is no way to live son.

Anthony Weiner is looking for pen pals. Paging Mr. Juggler. Mr. Crusty Juggler.

      1. John   8 years ago

Well yeah, but he is our Crusty.

      2. MarkLastname   8 years ago

Come to think of it, has he been around here since wiener got locked up? Hmm, never seen them in the same room together.

        1. Red Tony   8 years ago

He's been around. Not frequently, but I've seen him.

  28. Jerryskids   8 years ago

I knew somebody as tight-assed as Roy Moore was repressing some dark shit but I have to admit I'm surprised it was teen-aged girls. 8 year-old boys was my guess.

      There's still time.

Bill Ney makes the mistake of going on Ask Me Anything on 4chan. It doesn't end well.

    1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Reddit. Certain neighborhoods you'd get your ass SHANKED making that mistake.

      1. John   8 years ago

I have been to tougher neighborhoods that Nerdwood. So I am not too worried.

    2. Half-Virtue, Half-Vice   8 years ago

Ask Me Anything on 4chan is probably like playing truth or dare with the devil.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

On /b/ or /pol/, probably. People have done them on other boards that are more civil though.

    3. Bubba Jones   8 years ago

"Whatever possessed him to do an AMA on Reddit? These things rarely go well, especially not for progressive phonies who pretend they're scientists so they can peddle their climate change BS."

I call bullshit. Reddit is 99% progressive phonies who dropped out of community college and live in mom's basement.

  30. Brendan   8 years ago

This pisses me off. Why couldn't this come out in the primary election? How about during his controversial judgeship?

On a side note, I have serious problem with making someone answer for something that happened or supposedly happened 28 years ago.

    1. John   8 years ago

That is why I don't think it is going to keep him out of the Senate. Everyone knows the Democrats held this until he won the nomination. And the people who were going to vote for him hate the Democrats and hate the media even more. I bet they elect him anyway.

      1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

This is never going to be discussed in the mainstream media.

The left is resorting to lies about sex or at least using these stories as leverage and Americans are going to pick up on that.

On one hand, these Nanny-Staters (Republicans too) who want to regulate every aspect of sexual relations, are seeing their plans backfire. On the other hands, I don't want a single lefty to win any political office.

        1. BYODB   8 years ago

I'll admit that I find the timing of the release highly suspect, but at the same time that doesn't mean he's innocent. Just because someone's politics aligns with one's own, that isn't a reason to give them more of a benefit of a doubt than anyone else accused of the same crime.

That said, I haven't seen that anyone's actually trying to put Moore in court yet so...I don't know what to make of that. The phrase 'innocent until proven guilty' comes to mind, but there are serious questions if this was actually illegal at the time let alone if it actually happened at all.

          Yeesh.

    2. Unlabelable MJGreen   8 years ago

      Yes, that's the outrage here.

      1. John   8 years ago

To a lot of people, it will be. You have to understand Green, they hate you almost as much as you hate them.

      2. MarkLastname   8 years ago

Well, if he gets in the senate, he'll fuck more people than he did teens when he was in his thirties; so it is a pretty big tragedy that this didn't come out before.

  31. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

The neighbor accused of tackling Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and breaking his ribs has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault.
Someone else did it or he was acting in self-defense.

This guy will plead guilty later, his lawyer just advised him to get his ducks in a row and wait to see what the FBI will do, before pleading guilty.

I notice the republicans are expected to resign upon accusation, where democrats may or may not resign upon conviction.

  34. NoVaNick   8 years ago

Back in the day, I was advised to keep my distance from older guys who seemed too friendly because they might want to grab my junk. I'm sure many girls were similarly advised, if not more so. I am not victim blaming here at all and hope that Moore, Weinstein, Spacey, and the rest of these pieces of shit are brought to justice. But, my point is that this has been going on for a long time and people looked the other way. Now, suddenly, its like everyone is so shocked about it.

    1. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

Its politically convenient to be shocked about it.
