Picture, if you will, it is the 1980's and Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner and Kevin Spacey are attending Trump University. Each is opening the wrapper on his Trump 101 class textbook titled, When You're Famous You Can Grab Them by the Pussy (or the Male Equivalent) and They'll Let You Do It. Meanwhile in the future, the president is taking a bathroom-slash-social media break to tweet out JFK's real killer when he notices that his First Amendment rights no longer exist. Meanwhile, the Congressional GOP is working feverishly on a tax reform package but finding it much more difficult to self-sabotage than their previous half-assed legislative attempts at repealing Obamacare or stopping immigration when they stumble upon the one addition to derail the effort: paying out cash for replacing old cars with new, but making that cash taxable income.

        "Meanwhile in the future"

Are you saying these events are occurring simultaneously... in temporally differing settings?

          Exactly.

The magic of movie editing. Present day Trump goes back to his home town of Derry to kill the immigrant clown in the storm drain. Along the way he has flashbacks to his childhood when another immigrant clown touch him down there.

How "Jenna Abrams," an opinionated young-American character created by Russian trolls, duped much of the mainstream media.

Is she the creation of random trolls, or was it a direct campaign by the Kremlin. These things matter. If it is the latter, then sure it's Russian meddling. If it's the former, then it is no different than American trolls trying to trick the media. If trolling and commenting on the affairs of other countries and sharing news links about other countries is meddling, then I and everybody on the internet meddles in foreign elections everyday.

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Psst... don't tell the nation-states, but they're an obsolete concept, or rapidly becoming so.

      1. Fancylad   8 years ago

It's the city-state comeback. The Federated Peoples Republic of Cleveland's time has finally arrived.

    2. colorblindkid   8 years ago

Somebody from Russia sharing a Fox News story making Hillary look bad? That's basically what a lot of this meddling is turning out to be.

They're Beghaziing the hell out of this. I've said it from the start. The Obama admin absolutely lied about Benghazi to save face, and their rhetoric about the YouTube guy was atrocious and more threatening to America than the attack itself. (They were basically enforcing blasphemy laws) However, the Republicans made it into a carnival with absurd accusations and silly complaints about how Hillary's negligence made it happen (which might be somewhat true, but is hardly a scandal) and people stopped caring.

    3. Memory Hole   8 years ago

"She" was the creation of the Kremlin.

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

Well, the Kremlin's secret plot to make Roseanne Barr look slightly crazier than everybody already knew she was succeeded admirably.

      2. John   8 years ago

That is exactly what I would expect a Russian created troll account to say.

        1. Rhywun   8 years ago

          Heh.

So I am somewhat media savvy - but I've never heard of this Jenna character. And having pivoted into fake-racism, you'd think that would have been splashed all over. *shrug*

          1. John   8 years ago

Me either. In the world of social media there are dozens of idiots whose name I know but have no idea why and might as well be Russian created troll identities. For example, who the fuck is Stephen Miller? He and his tweets is constantly referred to on right wing websites and by right leaning journalists. He might as well be a creation of some KGB agent for all I know. And if he were, I don't think it would matter. They are all morons who can't find real jobs talking out of their asses anyway.

            1. Timrekgrun   8 years ago

Yeah, Just like that guy named "John" who post on Hit-and-Run.

              1. John   8 years ago

When they start referring to me in other publications, sure. The point is not that I or you or anyone else is any better. The point is that Stephen Miller and the rest of these clowns have done nothing to justify the platform they have been given or why anyone should pay any attention to them.

              2. Fancylad   8 years ago

                Don't forget "Tony".

            2. BYODB   8 years ago

It's because, apparently, news outlets like to point at twitter feeds these days and they don't bother to check into if said individual is actually a real person, a sock puppet, or in this case a foreign agent account.

Maybe, just maybe, Media outlets shouldn't be constantly posting shit from twitter. I know those stories make me feel dumber when Reason puts up Twitter fights instead of a news story, for instance. It's the laziest possible way to write a story, and I think the only people who actually give a flying fuck about it are Journalists themselves.

Jeff Sessions is busted. He lied under oath multiple times on multiple occasions. Mueller should indict him. Does anyone challenge this?

    1. colorblindkid   8 years ago

Sure, arrest him, but his lies and "forgotten meetings" under oath were much less egregious than James Clapper's lied under oath when he was the head of the fucking FBI. Throw them all in jail. Let's get Hillary under oath and send her to jail when she inevitably lies as well. Throw everybody in jail.

      1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

        Throw everybody in jail.

I am interested in your ideas, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

      2. Memory Hole   8 years ago

Works for me but here's some problems with your plan. Clapper's lie wasn't for personal gain but so as not to expose classified info * if my memory is right.

Sessions lied to impede the Russia investigation and keep the stench of the collusion off himself. By the way go look back and look at his testimony. His lying was so fucking obvious.

And finally, Trump has ruined any possibility of prosecuting Hillary by corrupting the fuck out of the process.

        1. John   8 years ago

Works for me but here's some problems with your plan. Clapper's lie wasn't for personal gain but so as not to expose classified info * if my memory is right.

So lying about the nature and scope of an illegal spying program is totally okay because "it wasn't for personal gain". Your memory is right. It is your brain that is broken.

And finally, Trump has ruined any possibility of prosecuting Hillary by corrupting the fuck out of the process.

No he didn't. Why don't you do the world a favor and go get a lobotomy so you stop polluting the world with your stupidity.

          1. Memory Hole   8 years ago

Fuck you John. You're a whore for Republicans. I mentioned some problems with the plan. Trump is ruining any possibility of prosecuting Hillary for real shit by trying to order investigations of bullshit. You are so fucking biased and dumb. I thought you were a lawyer? Surely you understand the problem of Trump interjecting himself into the Justice Department?

At this point, I think you are likely one of the Glibertarians coming here to troll and make shreek seem intelligent and reasonable. If you want to stay here, at least try to be funny. Who knows Farnham. Have you noticed that Reason's most notorious troll, Mary Stack or whomever she was, seems to have disappeared. And her disappearance coincided almost exactly with the creation of that site. It is a rather odd coincidence and one that makes you wonder if perhaps that was all the result of Swiss Servator or Old Man with Candy or someone else associated with the creation of that site.

Socialist policies in the US dished up something similar when I was in grade school and they served government cheese as a snack when we took the Iowa Test Of Basic Skills. Had I lived in Wisconsin and they served that shit, some 9 year old may have gone to his locker to fetch his .410 shotgun and end that practice once and for all.

  20. John   8 years ago

DOJ has been politicized and out of control for decades. And Jullian Sanchez knows this. I would love to know just how exactly Sanchez thinks DOJ will ever be brought under control if elected officials cannot do so. The answer to that question is that he doesn't know because he doesn't even ask it. He is just a fucking hack who has decided that the FBI and DOJ being accountable to no one is a good idea because TRUMP!!

The irony of Sanchez statement is epic. Sanchez thinks that we should have what amounts to an unaccountable secret police that even the highest elected official in the country but its Trump who wants to be the strong man. Fuck you Sanchez. Fuck you and every other piece of shit, know nothing, I became a journalist because of I was too fucking stupid to even get through the education college, beltway journalist hack.

They can't die too soon, IMHO. Everyone has suffered long enough. Where's Dr. Kevorkian when we need him? These parties need his special treatment.

    1. John   8 years ago

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Neither of them can be "doomed" until someone can come up with a replacement for one of them. And I don't see that happening. I just see them changing to better fit what their actual voters want. And that is what Goldberg is all butt hurt about.

      1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

I'm not certain I'd call him particularly butthurt in that article.

  23. John   8 years ago

Goldberg says "both major parties are doomed". Okay., he makes some pretty good points in the bulk of the piece about how and why the Democrats are doomed. When it comes to the Republcans, he doesn't seem to have much explaination for his claim other than TRUMP!! and the fact that no one seems to give a shit what people like Goldberg think anymore. The article is more of a cri de coeur about how the Democrats and people like Goldberg are doomed.

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

That the Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House and still can't do a goddamn thing about the ACA doesn't bode well for their continued viability, on the other hand.

      1. jcw   8 years ago

When does Goldberg explain that he thinks republicans are doomed because no one seems to give a shit on what he thinks anymore?

        1. John   8 years ago

Read the fucking article. He says nothing about the Republicans until the very end when he says

Again, you wouldn't be crazy for thinking the GOP is like a runaway fire at a soiled-diaper-reclamation center. And I'm sure I'll have opportunities in the near future to expand on that. But the important point is that dysfunction isn't zero-sum. Right now, the best argument Republicans have is "we're not Democrats," and the best argument Democrats have is "we're not Republicans." Like two punch-drunk pugilists leaning on each other in the twelfth round, if one falls, the other may well fall too.

That is nothing but a list of unsupported and unexplained assumptions. All he is saying here is the Republicans must be doomed because Goldberg doesn't like them. Since Goldberg is a Republican, that is just him saying they are doomed because they don't listen to him anymore.

          1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

His article is a rebuttal to the common statement in media at large that the Republican party is in peril. His article says, if that's true than the Democratic party is in as bad a shape if not worse. This is a really common issue with you I've noticed. You take really oblique readings of articles so that you may be extra angry about them.

      2. Rhywun   8 years ago

That the Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House and still can't do a goddamn thing about the ACA doesn't bode well for their continued viability, on the other hand.

That's because the Republicans ostensibly stand for reversing the ratchet. That is not an easy thing to do.

The Republicans should wish their only trouble was Trump. I may be old, but I vaguely remember when they supposedly stood for limited government, fiscal responsibility (even GASP balanced budgets), and mostly leaving people alone (apart from moralizing, of course).

As for the Dems, I seem to remember strories, back before my time, when they stood up to defend individuals' civil rights against The Man, preached staying out of foreign wars, and talked a good game about keeping the government out of people's bedrooms.

Not only was all of that just blowing smoke, neither group even bothers with that sort of rhetoric anymore. I became a libertarian partly out of complete disgust with both groups.

I may be old, but I vaguely remember when they supposedly stood for limited government, fiscal responsibility (even GASP balanced budgets), and mostly leaving people alone (apart from moralizing, of course).

Your memory is failing you. A certain part of the party stood for those things but the people in charge certainly never did. You have to make a disctinction between the party and the people in it. There is a certain breed of Washington Republican who pays lip service to voters but really is about going along and getting along with the people who make him rich and the Progs whom he really believes like him but in reality hate his guts. Those people are doomed. The party? Not so much. It will just be led by a better class of creten.

I am not a Democrat or a Republican either.

    3. ChipToBeSquare   8 years ago

There is still friction within the GOP. See the Strange/Moore race

There isn't a clear intellectual center to the GOP the same way there isn't one for the Dems. There is a trend to Trumpian populism though, whose most coherent idea is standing up to the left no matter what. But Congress does not reflect that, nor does National Review. The old guard of the GOP is desperately holding on against the rejection of the voters. They still have money and influence so the fight could be ugly and dragged out, but it's already lost. The shrewdest among them got onboard with Trump and are trying to influence whatever the hell Trumpism is from the inside since Trump is so malleable, while Bill Kristol teams with Dems in a desperate effort to convince the voters to take the neocons back

The fights aren't among the rank-and-file GOP voters (who are united against the left at all costs despite ideologic differences) but are real and not over

I fucking knew it! Breitbart isn't even covering the Republican corporate tax cut efforts. Surprise, surprise? No for me. Did you notice how Trump literally kissed the tax plan when he was presenting it? I've never seen him happier presenting legislation. He didn't kiss the Obamacare repeal stuff. Fuck didn't walk off before even signing the Executive Order? But acted like he won the lottery when Paul Ryan handed over the tax plan. The idea Trump gives two shits about the working man is the biggest con.

    1. John   8 years ago

      WAAAAAAA!@!!!

        2. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

  29. H. Farnham   8 years ago

    Re: Wisconsin hunters

"It's just crazy (the minimum age) would go below 10," Rep. Gary Hebl of Sun Prairie said. "Absolute insanity that we're talking about giving a kid a gun at any age so they experience the heritage of hunting. The most important factor is safety."

I think I've got very different notions of what qualifies as insanity (Rep. Hebl might qualify for making this statement). It doesn't seem too unreasonable to me that parents should be deciding how and when to instill values (heritage, safety, etc.) in their children rather than leaving it up to legislation.

    1. DaveSs   8 years ago

Anything that allows parents to get kids involved in hunting or shooting sports is by definition a bad idea as far as urban politicians are concerned.

In Iowa, the urban dems went apeshit last year over a similar get kids involved in shooting sports bill.

Up until this year, Iowa law forbade anyone under age 14 from handling a handgun under any situation whatsoever. Anyone from 14 to 20(yes, 20 years old, otherwise known as adults) had to be under direct supervision of a parent.

As far as the urbanites were concerned, the proposal was going to allow 4 year olds to carry concealed weapons in public.
Oh how I wish I had attended the committee hearings on that one. The paid lobbyists are too big a wimps to respond to such stupidity with the appropriate level of scorn when such comments are raised in the hearings.

      1. H. Farnham   8 years ago

See, I would never have expected laws like that to exist in states like Wisconsin or Iowa. I guess that's what "common sense legislation" looks like.

In Kansas, I think the law simply states that hunters under the age of 16 have to be accompanied by a licensed adult (no license necessary for those under 16). And I'm pretty sure there is no law regarding age if hunting/shooting on your own land.

        1. DaveSs   8 years ago

I suspect they are just old laws from the 1910s to 1940s when progressives held considerably more sway over the midwest.

    1. Citizen X - #6   8 years ago

He spelled "cri de coeur" correctly, though in the same comment he misspelled "Republicans."

      1. John   8 years ago

Sparky doesn't know what "cri de coeur" means. So he assumed it was some mispelling.

        1. $park? leftist poser   8 years ago

          *eyeroll*

    2. John   8 years ago

      No,

It is a dictionary of a few mispelled words, but mostly words you don't understand. I should probably try to dumb my vocabulary down so people like you can follow along better. But, I just have no tolerence for stupidity and am kind of mean about it.

Beyond that, saying "the Republican Party is not doomed" says nothing about how good or bad that is. It just says that it isn't doomed. Do you just not understand what I am saying? I never found you very smart but you are not the dumbest person on here. I would think that even you could understand that disctinction. Am I wrong? Does my explaining it help at all?

Trump blocks someone so they can't see his feed without logging out = 1st amendment lawsuit.

Some guy brings his entire page down = hero, Twitter SHOULD take it down?

God it's hard to keep up, was the twitter employee a queer person of color? Is that why? *gets headache*

Not sure, but I sold all my shares of TWTR shortly after Trump took office. If that website can't make money with that fruitcake tweeting away into the night each day from the oval orifice, I figured that was dead money.

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

Twitter: a bulletin board where users post text and other people can read it. How in fuck they have a market cap of 14.5b, I have no idea.

        1. CE   8 years ago

They can also post pictures and videos.

          1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

Novel. Videos are of course an offshoot of high bandwidth, but posting pictures was happening in the old alt- discussion group of internet 0.5

Look, I'm not giving investment advice... that which has a crazy high stock price has a crazy high stock price. I just think it's important to accept a little cold water on your tech company when someone describes what it essentially does.

But I'm not here to deny that people have made Billions investing in companies that allow people to send LOLpics to each other. As a long time tech professional, I'm just a little baffled.

            1. BestUsedCarSales   8 years ago

Probably the big jump was they did it from your phone, before smartphones even existed.

          2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

By the way, I do find this funny, given the current climate of Fake Ads and impending government regulation from Sen. Feinstein.

Twitter said during an earnings call Thursday it has increased its self-service advertising business, which allows companies to buy ads through an auction-based platform. It also means brands don't have to buy through a sales team, which cuts costs. The company added it plans to expand self-service buying, as well as create new ways for advertisers to buy ads.

    3. loveconstitution1789   8 years ago

      There would be race riots!

      Again.

  35. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

Roseanne Barr and Michael McFaul argued with her on Twitter. BuzzFeed and The New York Times cited her tweets. But Jenna Abrams was the fictional creation of a Russian troll farm.

When oh when will journalists stop using anonymous twitter accounts as fucking original news and 'sources'.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   8 years ago

Man this Jenna Abrams story is the best thing I've read all month.
