Oklahoma City Cops Tase, Shoot, Kill Deaf Man
There were no body cameras, because the union delayed their deployment.

Police in Oklahoma City tased and fatally shot a deaf man, Magdiel Sanchez, who they said was wielding a metal pipe. Police reportedly shot him when he was at least 15 feet away from any officers.
The cops were not wearing body cameras. Although the city council voted to introduce body cameras two years ago, not all officers are equipped with them, thanks to objections from the police union—more evidence of how police unions make reducing police violence and misconduct more difficult.
Police arrived at Sanchez's home Tuesday after following his father, who had been involved in a hit and run. A police spokesperson, Capt. Bo Mathews, told the press he didn't know if anyone was injured in the crash but knew that, at the very least, the car didn't hit a pedestrian.
The cop who followed Sanchez's father home saw Sanchez with a two-foot-long pipe, "perceived" a threat, and called for backup. A neighbor has told NBC News that Sanchez often carried the pipe to fend off stray dogs.
When other officers arrived, they ordered Sanchez to drop the weapon and get on the ground. Neighbors yelled to the police that Sanchez was deaf, but it's unclear whether the police heard them.
After he failed to obey their commands, Sanchez was tased and shot.
Oklahoma City police shoot a lot of people—a resident of Oklahoma City is 20 times more likely to be shot and killed by police than a resident of New York City is.
That makes the police union's delay of the deployment of body cameras even worse.
The Oklahoma City Council first voted to equip officers with body cameras in September 2015, but it took until last November for the city to get the union onboard. The local Fraternal Order of Police objected to the cameras because of a policy that would have allowed supervisors to review footage at their discretion. An arbitrator agreed with the union.
You read that right: The police union objected to supervisors using body camera footage to supervise their subordinates, and an arbitrator thought this made sense.
When a cop shoots someone while another cop was tasing the same guy and neighbors are yelling that the person was deaf, it probably isn't the first questionable incident in his career, just the first to be serious enough to gain widespread attention. Bad cops usually don't start with killing. The same kinds of character flaws—sloppiness, jumpiness, lack of respect for others—lead to less severe misconduct as well.
When supervisors can review body camera footage at their pleasure, they're more likely to identify such cops before they kill. Unions should not be able to thwart that kind of accountability.

If you just listen to the police commands you won't get shot. How hard is this?
Don't want to be shot like a thug, don't use American Sign Language like a thug.
No difference between ASL and Gang-Signs I reckon.
Not according to certain public school principals.
It's simple - he didn't put the pipe down when the officers told him to. Therefore, good shoot.
Neighbors yelled to the police that Sanchez was deaf, but it's unclear whether the police heard them.
It's not a cop's job to listen to civilians. If a cop wants to hear what a civilian has to say, he will kneel on the civilian's neck and ask.
"Neighbors yelled to the police that Sanchez was deaf, but it's unclear whether the police heard them."
precisely.. you aren't responsible for instructions or information you aren't able to he~.... wait a sec..
Thanks, Krgyewski, for your fair and balanced reporting. I wouldn't want to think that REASON is biased toward somebody who was murdered by a cop.

This is like a reverse game of Clue: Sanchez, his own front yard, lead pipe.
Join us next week for another game of Oklahoma Clue, where we guess the next threat to public safety from which our heroes in blue will save us.
Here's a preview: Golden Retriever puppy, underneath its owner's bed, big soulful eyes.
Dead dogs don't bark, or give Nazi salutes.
there might have been explosives packed into the pipe -- TERRRRRRIZZZZZZ !!!!!11!!!!!!
Oklahoma City police shoot a lot of people?a resident of Oklahoma City is 20 times more likely to be shot and killed by police than a resident of New York City.
Why would residents of Oklahoma be shot by residents of New York?
I live in OKC.
The Oklahoma City Council first voted to equip officers with body cameras in September 2015, but it took until last November for the city to get the union onboard.
Because it doesn't matter how many laws you successfully pass, until the union is on board... you got bupkis.
The solution to police unions is RICO.
There's something very wrong hiding under the obvious question of: How and why was the union's onboardness at all relevant to the police department's compliance with this city council order?
You read that right: The police union objected to supervisors using body camera footage to supervise their subordinates, and an arbitrator thought this made sense.
I had a friend who drove for King County Metro. Video was not allowed in any case as evidence against a driver. Absolutely barred. Here's a video of a Metro driver beating a passenger with wheel chocks. Video: irrelevant. Driver is still on the job with back pay.
Looks like self defense to me.
Seems like an open and shut civil case against the driver and the Metro.
Oh wait, the passenger spat on him? Yeah, beat that ass.
It's called ADW. Passenger might be HIV+.
Don't wanna be a thug, don't stand on your property with a two-foot long pipe like a thug.
Don't want to get shot like a thug? Don't be deaf and unable to hear police commands like a thug.
Don't be Mexican like a Thug
Sieg heil, esse.
Further evidence that whoever is currently president is right. Or wrong. Honestly, I don't know who it is as I don't read the news.
Don't want to get shot like a thug? Don't neglect to develop your cochlear hair cells like a thug.
Stray dogs and cops have it in for deaf people in Oklahoma City.
I blame Antifa and the SJWs.
Is it ok to shoot Nazi?
Does everyone agree on shooting Nazi Mexicans?
But where does nazi babby come from?
How is nazi babby formed?
Never mind. Netizen_James below sort of answered my question.
Anyone who has been through a lead pipe training scenario would understand that this is a good shoot. Unless you have been through lead pipe training, your opinion is garbage.
Yes, having played every Silent Hill I know you shoot to kill anyone but you wielding a lead pipe.
Magdiel Sanchez is Pyramid Head?
Did you ever get Pyramid Head to listen?
People in the customer service and sales industries have this figured out already.
Ever notice those "this message may be recorded for quality control" messages? Well, they actually use them for quality control, not just for getting you on tape when you agree to a lifetime gym membership.
My sales manager used to play example calls for his entire sales team, critiquing the call, pointing out moments where the deal could have been closed, missed clues that the sales rep was losing his audience, etc. It was a very valuable teaching tool for making people better at their job, not just for documenting when the idiot started cussing at the lady from Indianapolis.
Until you've ridden with police you will never understand how they are already perfect
American cops need to be run out of the US: They have become just about as un-American as anyone.
If you're an American cop, get the Hell out of my country. Get your punk-thug ass down to Caracas or Havana.
Eventually we will have to do to them what the East Germans did to the STASI, and for much the same reason.
Unions. Nearly all police violence is entirely the unions' fault. The culture and fearmongering they teach cops. The aggressive training they give. The lack of accountability. All goes back to the police unions.
Focusing on the intent of individual cops will change absolutely nothing, but that is all the press will focus on. Half of the times these cops are found innocent, it is because according to the police policies, they are! Its literally not their fault, legally. It is the police unions that create those policies to begin with and train these cops to act like this in situations.
And this guy
figures this rag would place the blame on unions, and not even mention the Black Lives Matter movement or the racism aspect of this story.
No, this isn't about unions.
This is about racist cops placing zero value on the lives of nonwhite people. (note carefully that Robert Dear was captured alive, even after KILLING a cop....because Dear was white. No other reason)
This is about bully cops whose fragile egos define anything other than fawning obsequiousness as defiance and therefor resistance and therefor criminal.
This is about PDs needing to hire honest and brave people as cops - not 'pussies with guns' (ocr: Shoot 'Em Up)

It's okay that the unions in this case intentionally prevented body cameras from being issued to Oklahoma City cops, though, because they're unions and therefore above reproach. Right, Jimbo?
You think they care about killing white people?
I'd like to relate an anecdote. Recently overheard a conversation where an older gentleman basically flat out stated that he's tired of cops and what they get away with. He also stated that he wouldn't be able to support BLM unless they got on the police accountability train first, and squashed their racist silliness.
Do you wnat allies? Making this about race may not get you the result you want.
And, he was Black. Go figure.
Ironically, BLM started as a police accountability movement and was almost immediately taken over by the race whores.
race whores
The porn thread is up a few entries.
Once you find these perfect angels who can handle this job without abusing their authority and who have no preexisting biases, see if you can find some to fill out the rest of the government. You may make a statist of me yet
33 unarmed people have been killed by cops this year. 10 were black. 12 were white. No cops have gone to jail.
More white people are killed by police than black people, but the press doesn't care about them. No cops go to jail for killing them either.
What were the other eleven? Hispanic? We know at least 1 of them is, unless a lead pipe counts as armed.
8 were Hispanic. The rest were "other".
other = Native Americans?
The black people that get shot by cops tend to all happen in big Democrat-run cities where liberals have to see it. The poor white people that get accosted by cops on a daily basis and shot for no reason live in areas of the country nobody cares about.
There are many more white people than black people in this country (still). Statistics are meaningless unless they are normalized. (Apologize for math jargon). Black people made of 12.6% of the population in 2015.
Only jrc gets to sign his post. For everyone else it's just embarrassing.
Referring to oneself as a "netizen" in public ought to be cause for enough embarrassment.
Ah, good point. He is probably incapable of shame.
Police unions are not progressive entities. Let's get that clear. Because while I am totally on board with libertarians' interest in criminal justice and police reform, it's cynically undermined when you use that issue to shoehorn in your repulsive plutocratic anti-worker stuff. Unionism is not the problem, as you want to imply, law enforcement policy is.
Who influences, creates, and enforces the policies?
I'm sure if we come up with a good enough policy to keep police accountable, the unions will have no choice but to implement it exactly the way that we want. They're only resisting accountability because we haven't come up with the perfect idea yet
If the unions are going beyond their purpose of looking out for the interests of members and pushing for more cop sadism, the problem might be more fundamental. We're still operating on a "tough on crime" mentality from the federal government down to bumfuck police academies.
Unions are socialist organizations and their original purpose was to bring about a socialism revolution- that's how they were going to look out for their members. And their leaders, just like all socialist leaders, have become power and money hungry and ineffective at anything but bullying.
You are equating public and private sector unions. They are far from the same thing. I don't think libertarians have much of a problem with private sector unions, as long as workers are not coerced into joining.
Public sector unions are totally different beast. Workers and managers are on the same team. The result is the workers getting pretty much whatever they want. It's not like increased costs will bankrupt their employer. Customers (taxpayers) are forced to pay. Just increase taxes. Because customers have no choice in the matter, their input is largely ignored. The result of public sector unions is increased taxes, increased indifference, and a total loss of accountability. None if which would be tolerated in the private sector because in the private sector customers are king.
Even your socialist hero FDR understood this.
I just can't square my love of individual freedom with a top-down rule that forbids people from unionizing, government employees or not.
Dude! I was eating! I almost choked! Your love of individual freedom? Is that a joke?
I can tell you seriously don't get it.
Private sector unions were created in part to extort a larger share of the profits from the employer.
Government has no profits. All it does is spend. So when government unions use their extortion tactics, the ones getting extorted are the taxpayers. All demands by public sector unions come at the expense of taxpayers and people on the receiving end of government services. Government is an extortion agency by definition. So are unions. Combine the two and you get unaccountable cops, shitty government employees who are impossible to fire, increased debt, insane pensions, lost transparency, and so on and so forth.
Government employees don't have rights. They have powers. When they organize into unions they do so not to protect their rights, but to protect and increase their powers. And it is the people they supposedly serve who suffer.
As usual you don't get it. You never will.
But thanks for the laugh. Even if it almost killed me.
Public sector workers don't have freedom. They have power. When they unionize it isn't to protect their freedom, it is to increase their power. Their power comes at the expense of the people they "serve."
They should absolutely be forbidden from unionizing.
You act as if I'm unaware that libertarians are freedom-minimalists, ironic as that may be.
Say what?
I guess you don't understand the difference between freedom and power. Not surprising. You have proven yourself to be distinction-challenged to the point of retardation in the past. Why should I expect anything different?
Freedom is the ability to do something or be protected from something being done to you. Sometimes it takes power to accomplish that. Your formula removes most of the tools necessary to actually achieve individual freedom, except for those who happen to have all the resources at their disposal already.
Unions enjoy so many protections and perks from the government that it's not funny. Plus, most of the people don't belong to unions because they want to; they are coerced if they want a job. You need to get your freedom loving self some education on unions.
Tony, what's it like to get tased by Oklahoma City's finest?
"When other officers arrived, they ordered Sanchez to drop the weapon and get on the ground. Neighbors yelled to the police that Sanchez was deaf, but it's unclear whether the police heard them."
That's ironic -- the really sad kind of ironic.
Somewhere in Ontario, a chill passed through Alanis Morissette.
In his defense, the cop did ask him to stop....
Immigration status and list of benefits received
from my and other taxpayer's income taken by threat of violence and/or imprisonment?
Sloppy journalism.
You're right - this article should have been about some Hispanic got his immigration status cleared up right quick, not about how some officers murdered a deaf dude for the crime of holding a pipe. Good catch!
Police reportedly shot him when he was at least 15 feet away from any officers.
Irrelevant until we know how long the pipe was!
The cop who followed Sanchez's father home saw Sanchez with a two-foot-long pipe...
Oh...
A neighbor has told NBC News that Sanchez often carried the pipe to fend off stray dogs.
Looks like he really needed something to fend off stray pigs.
Neighbors yelled to the police that Sanchez was deaf, but it's unclear whether the police heard them.
When will we get serious about stopping this deaf-on-deaf violence?
RE: Oklahoma City Cops Tase, Shoot, Kill Deaf Man
There were no body cameras, because the union delayed their deployment.
All in a days work.
No applause needed.
Maybe the cop thought that the guy was going to backsass him in deaf hand language.
Why can't the cops just back up? If no one else except them is in danger there's no reason to stand their ground. Same thing happened to that college kid the other day. Empty street, no reason they couldn't have just backed up to keep their distance.
