Pitzer College RA Tells White Girls to Stop Wearing Hoop Earrings: It's Cultural Appropriation
"If you didn't create the culture as a coping mechanism for marginalization, take off those hoops."

A residential advisor at Pitzer College sent a campus-wide email informing students—white women, in particular—that they should stop wearing hoop earrings.
Hooped earrings "actually come from a historical background of oppression and exclusion," wrote Alegria Martinez, according to The Claremont Independent. "Why should white girls be able to take part in this culture?"
The email was intended to serve as an explanation for the appearance of a message, "White girl take off your hoops!!!" on Pitzer's free speech wall. In her email to campus, Martinez identified herself as one of the authors of the message.
It's great that Pitzer has a free speech wall, and it's great that Martinez exercised her right to contribute an offensive, racist statement to the wall. Free speech means letting people say offensive, racists things. Which, to be clear, is exactly what Martinez did. If racist has any meaning at all, it must describe the belief that people should be disallowed from participating in certain facets of modern life because of the color of their skin. The doctrine of cultural appropriation—that marginalized people should keep to their own customs, and white people to theirs—is just old-fashioned racism given a fancy name for the purposes of ensnaring liberals.
Another student, Jacquelyn Aguilera, also took credit for the message, and sent her own email:
"If you didn't create the culture as a coping mechanism for marginalization, take off those hoops, if your feminism isn't intersectional take off those hoops, if you try to wear mi cultura when the creators can no longer afford it, take off those hoops, if you are incapable of using a search engine and expect other people to educate you, take off those hoops, if you can't pronounce my name or spell it … take off those hoops / I use "those" instead of "your" because hoops were never "yours" to begin with."
Ah, the old it's not my job to educate you. A favorite of the campus left, it is deployed by someone who realizes their argument will not stand up to scrutiny.
In any case, now that Pitzer's white girls are being derided for how they dress—and here I was thinking fashion-shaming was a microaggression—perhaps they will actually share in the sense of feeling collectively oppressed? I have to imagine being told by your RA that you have to change your clothes because there's something inherently wrong with you is a fairly marginalizing experience.
Over at National Review, Katherine Timpf lays out the obvious case against the doctrine of cultural appropriation:
I can admit that I did not invent hoop earrings. Hell, I can even admit that I've never done any research on the history of hoop earrings. But does this mean that I can't wear them? Hell no, because it is literally a piece of metal twisted into a circle, and if you are going to try to tell me that I cannot wear a piece of metal because that piece of metal has been twisted into a circle, then I am going to tell you to shut up. It does not matter who started it, nobody owns circles, and you really, really need to calm down.
Spoiler alert: The people on this earth right now are not the first people to ever have existed . . . and at this point, every single style of anything ultimately goes back to someone else's idea. Truly, I would challenge you to think of even one modern "original" idea that cannot be traced back to inspiration from someone or something else. What's more, we live in a country where people from many different cultures are interacting with each other, which means that some elements from one culture are inevitably going to influence the people of another. And do you know what? That's not bad. In fact, some might even say that it's one of the things that makes this place so special.
Of all the weird things the campus left believes, this one probably takes the cake. If cultural appropriation were enforced evenly, it would spell the end of progress, cosmopolitanism, and the entire liberal project.
For more on this subject, read Katherine Mangu-Ward's interview with British author—and unapologetic wearer of sombreros—Lionel Shriver.

Christ, what a female asshole.
I would reply that wearing jeans is cultural appropriation from white miners, and she needs to go back to wearing animal hides
hahahahahaah...i am totally going to use that next time i hear this stupid shit! Thanks.
Ah, but did those miners create those jeans as a coping mechanism for marginalization? I didn't think so.
It's like you don't even Prog, dude.
Minorities cannot be guilty of cultural appropriation because they do not have a choice but to take what the majority culture gives them. But whites have plenty to take from, so they can choose not to steal from others. It's not that hard to understand, except for libertarians who think they can take from anyone.
That's some prime self-parody there, Tony.
You'd think there are some talking points he'd avoid. Apparently not.
Minorities cannot be guilty of cultural appropriation because they do not have a choice but to take what the majority culture gives them.
I'll bet you actually believe that too.
That you don't tells me all I need to know about how libertarians oppress people of color.
Okay, that's actually pretty funny. Every so often it's nice to have a reminder that Tony is nothing more than a deep-cover spoof, exploring the limits of Poe's Law.
Libertarians object to facts and logic by pretending that people don't mean what they say.
Not people, Tony. Just you.
So it's only my facts and logic that are inconvenient for you? If someone else said it, you'd accept it?
Well, if you bring some facts or logic to the table, we can talk.
Mighty white of you.
If minorities have no choice in the matter, how do they manage to develop their own distinctive cultures?
Outside of a few populations that have been isolated for centuries, there isn't a culture in the world that isn't built from things appropriated from other cultures. That's pretty much what culture is.
Tony -- TONY!!! Here's a good question for you. I'd really Really REALLY like to see your answer.
Jesus Christ, Tony, I thought even you wouldn't be dumb enough to think that cultural appropriation is a legitimate complaint.
How the fuck is imitation stealing?
So if you invent something and I make a copy of it, I'm just "imitating" and not "stealing"? I thought libertarians were all about property rights.
You know damn well that libertarians don't generally agree about the validity of IP protections. I suspect you also know that that is irrelevant to this discussion. No one has a fucking patent on hoop earrings. Whoever did invent them first has been dead for thousands of years.
That's because libertarians actually understand what "stealing" means. Taking someone's property without their consent is stealing, even if you elect someone to do the taking for you. Copying someone's fashion idea is a compliment, not theft.
Not if they do not consent to you copying them.
Now you are just being a pain in the ass for no reason. You don't really believe that imitating someone else's style of dress or personal adornment is stealing.
I love the way those converse look on you. I'm totally stealing your look and buying a pair for myself.
You can't do that unless you look like me. I insist you buy Nike.
Who is "they" in this case? The vast majority of issues of cultural appropriation are about some sort of trend, food, etc. that's not a patentable item and has often been around for hundreds or thousands of years. I find the notion that the "owner" of such things, no matter how trivial, is automatically anyone belonging to the same race or culture as whoever first invented it, and no one else, to be a bit puzzling. How exactly are you even supposed to get consent? Do you have to get the approval of everybody of that group? Just one person? The majority (how would you even be able to gauge that)?
That's not even getting into the fact that hoop earrings have been independently invented by many cultures around the world for thousands of years and aren't something specific to Latin American or black culture the way these girls argue.
I'm honestly a little surprised to see you venture this far into this argument, I seem to recall you admitting a few months back that a lot of the campus radicalism these days (such as the anti-free speech trend) was nonsense.
I grant all non-Irish permission to celebrate Saint Patrick's Day.
From Wikipedia: The world's oldest leather shoe, made from a single piece of cowhide laced with a leather cord along seams at the front and back, was found in the Areni-1 cave complex in Armenia in 2008 and is believed to date to 3500 BC.
So nobody can wear leather shoes unless the person is an Armenian?
Yeah, you got that right!
Also our chimp-like ancestors invented chimp/human-style face-to-face, "missionary style" fucking. No one but chimps should be allowed to fuck that way!!!!
Is it cultural appropriation when black women straighten their hair? Dye it blonde? The correct answer is "No" and not because minorities "have no choice" but because the concept of cultural appropriation is silly and petty and unworthy of serious consideration. I don't have to justify my choice of earrings to anyone, nor them to me, because it is dumb. It is the zenith of "first world problems" to get bent over someone imitating a style. And sometimes the correct response is "Thank you", whether said out loud or just thought to one's self.
It is the zenith of "first world problems" to get bent over someone imitating a style
Yeah. It appears Ms. Martinez is oppressed by having too much time on her hands.
I'm sorry for my cultural appropriation of toilet paper and indoor plumbing.
Tony: Where would I go to get consent to copy some clothing style or music style? Is there a government office of permission to wear dreds or hoop ear rings? And since any idiot college student can at any moment decide that X is appropriation, there is no end to this game and you can never get it right.
Just ask Tony for approval.
If that is the case, how can whites appropriate minorities culture if minorities only have what they are given by the majority?
Learn to read. I didn't say that minorities only get things from the majority. But they cannot escape the hegemony of white culture. So they have whiteness thrust upon them. But whites do not have the same pressure and should not steal what makes minorities unique.
The racism is getting old, Tony. "Waah! Races should stay separate and like separate things!"
Your argument is as circular as a hoop earring. You really ought to drop the appropriation, white man.
This post proves that Tony is a troll account, and doesn't believe any of the crap he says. Finally we can put our doubts to rest.
My grandparents (as well as Nick Gillespie's) were poor Italian immigrants. If you put pineapple on your pizza you are appropriating their culture.
So white people forced blacks to wear dreds? And use weaves? And wear their pants down low? I suppose pimp suits were white ideas too. White people come into the ghetto and tell people how to dress? Really?
Can we PLEASE get "white people" to ask them to ***STOP*** doing those things?!?! PLEASE!?!?!?
Tony the fucking idiot airs his utter stupidity as usual. Go fucking die now you fucking bottom feeding, control freak moron.
"Minorities cannot be guilty of cultural appropriation because they do not have a choice but to take what the majority culture gives them." Really? Oh, I suppose minorities did not have a choice when they listen to or perform rap, hip-hop, rock-n-roll, blues and jazz? And I suppose its OK that everyone enjoys the benefits of white culture, white innovation, and white inventions, but not from other cultures. Since black Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin, by her logic, all non-blacks should stop wearing cotton. Without white audiences who buy rap, hip-hop, blues and jazz music, the black musicians who created it wouldn't get nearly the income from it they get now. No where is intellectual property is protected more than in the United States. Here in Mexico where I live, software, music and movies, mostly created by whites, is bootlegged for a small fraction of the legal price And its not just libertarians who believe we can enjoy and build on innovations by minority inventors and composers.
Culture is not property; it can't be "appropriated". Therefore, nobody can be guilty of "cultural appropriation". Anyone using the term in an attempt to shame their neighbors for their fashion choices is a guilt-peddling asshole who should be told as much loudly and emphatically.
-jcr
By her logic, non-blacks should stop listening to or performing rap, hip-hop, rock-n-roll, funk, blues and jazz. And non-whites should stop listening to or performing electronic dance music, country music, classical music, opera and polkas. And non-Latinos should stop listening to or performing Bolero, Cumbia, Grupera, Mariachi, Norte?o, Ranchera, son and tango.
When are people going to stand up immediately to this lunacy with a retort?
How is it not cultural so and so if someone calls you a cultural so and so?
If everything is offensive then you are eventually immune to outrage, criticism, or punishment right?
Honest question: something like this is indeed mind boggling. But how can I tell if these things are truly a wide-spread reason for head-shaking, or just an off-the-wall instance of insanity that gets bounced around like a pachinko ball on the conservative and libertarian websites?
The frequency with which they occur speaks to the former. There was a similar thing about food on a campus, Oberlin I think(?). This stuff is more frequent than you want to believe.
Perhaps. But whenever a huge group of two or three white guys gets together and flash Nazi salutes, I'm quick to dismiss them as outliers and unimportant in the big scheme of things.
Most of us dismiss Nazi saluters because no one in power agrees with them (or at least admits it and takes action). But look at what college administrators and federal regulators of education have been doing. It's not a giant leap to think that those types could jump on these types of ridiculous claims.
^THIS^
Also, the fact that the "hey white girls, take off the hoop earrings!" demands were on a "free speech wall" and circulated in "campus-wide e-mail" speaks to a wider acceptance (or at least the lack of shame in spouting such nonsense).
"Most of us dismiss Nazi saluters because no one in power agrees with them"
good point
Hold the presses!!!!
Wait a minute here! The whole idea of "cultural appropriation" is PROGGY idea!
If we obey their dictates, we are STEALING this idea from proggies!
Libertarians and conservatives should REFUSE to obey "cultural appropriation" dictates, because WE didn't come up with it, so we'd be stealing!!!!
But there are a lot of schools, and it only takes a small handful of people to create frequent stories like this.
I really don't know either, but I like to think that these are outliers.
I think they are - I mean, this is a couple of RAs at a pretty nothing college. I seem to recall recently Robby calling out a college sophomore on some intolerant cultural opinion expressed in a small college paper. I mean, a professional reporter calling out a sophomore on being, well, a sophomore, is not exactly David standing up to Goliath.
So the Rs and Ls do have a way of getting out the ropes and hooks to scale every molehill when it comes to this topic, but as Fairbanks points out above, that's at least in part due to the fact that these molehills are taken very, very seriously by Team Blue (while Nazis are taken seriously by no one, really).
With his hair, it's more like Samson standing up to Goliath.
My brother teaches at a state university with very popular art and music schools. The students are overwhelmingly progressive. He's never even heard the term cultural appropriation. I have to believe this is some fringe shit.
"like a pachinko ball on...website?"
The internet is a vast wasteland; it just migrated from TV.
Obviously, charges of cultural appropriation should always be mocked or ignored.
But now I'm slightly curious about whether this person is completely making shit up or if large hoop earrings have a specific origin in Latin American or Black culture. I sort of doubt it. Ear piercing seems to be a pretty universal thing among humans and it seems prettly likely that multiple cultures would have come up with the idea of metal circles independently.
Here is a picture of what looks suspiciously like a hoop earring from the 6th century, found in Germany.
Also, pirates.
Clearly this is just evidence of people of color being in 6th century Germany.
/s
Was it found in the Black Forest?
Which really only reinforces how racist it is.
They were so racist that they started appropriating Latin American culture 1000 years before there was a Latin America. Now that's commitment.
She's a college student.
Stop trying to appropriate western culture, bitch!
as someone of Greek heritage, part of me wants to take offense. But that urge is overwhelmed by laughing at the RA.
But now I'm slightly curious about whether this person is completely making shit up or if large hoop earrings have a specific origin in Latin American or Black culture. I sort of doubt it.
We're still gonna mock her/them for appropriating circles from the Greeks and/or natural phenomenon, right?
Good piece Robby, but no alt-text Even "Oppressor!" would have sufficed.
"Why should white girls be able to take part in this culture?"
Non-competing goods. Also, < i The Independents was cancelled for less.
There is so much wrong with that question, it's hard to know where to start.
If white people were responsible for the marginalization that lead to hoops, they took part in the creation of hoops, no?
QUESTION ANSWERED.
It's great that Pitzer has a free speech wall, and it's great that Martinez exercised her right to contribute an offensive, racist statement to the wall.
Now THAT is a high-quality To Be Sure.
Is anyone going to come and scold and berate Robby for that one?
When he's achieved his apotheosis? They BETTER not.
It's not an apotheosis until he's made entirely of The Hair.
Oh yeah? Prove he's not.
if you are incapable of using a search engine and expect other people to educate you
I don't expect other people to "educate" me. But if you wish to persuade me to agree with you, you will have to make your case.
Citing burden of proof is triggering because the word 'burden' has oppressive racist connotations, shitlord!
When you're properly woke, you just know these things.
Lena Dunham loves you, but would love you better if you were bi-gender.
Another student, Jacquelyn Aguilera, also took credit for the message...
It's appropriation all the way down.
Kennedy should invite Martinez and Aguilera to her show to explain their position.
What's the cultural origin of the concept of higher education? Wherever that origin is, can we exclude all others based on the concept of cultural appropriation?
The first university was the University of Bologna. Obviously, all university students other than Italians are guilty of cultural appropriation far more profound than that of white girls wearing hoop earrings.
BTW, I was just in Africa where everybody and their sister tries to sell cheap African jewelry. Real Africans are quite happy for tourists to appropriate their culture by buying and wearing such jewelry. If I were to wear a bracelet or a necklace that I bought there on college campus, would I be guilty of African exploitation? I had no intention of exploitation, and don't wear jewelry, but only wanted to spread a few bucks in the local economy.
Goodness, this cultural appropriation thing is stupid.
You are guilty of exploiting Africa without visiting.
Everyone here is guilty of appropriating the culture of the Sumerians. No more writing.
Ah, the old it's not my job to educate you. A favorite of the campus left...
Unfortunately, with the incestual world of academia being what it is, one day it likely will be.
I wish a Native American student would have told her to get her oppressor ass back to Spain.
FIFY
Why are white women singled out here/? Women of every ethnicity wear hoop earrings. Why? because they look great.
Anybody know what the RA bitch is claiming as the origin of hoop earrings?
It took me about 5 minutes to find plenty of reason to believe that hoop earrings were independently invented by many cultures.
Earrings made out of metal rings?! That would be as surprising as finding examples of ancient pyramids in different cultures across the globe.
It boggles the mind.
I think you're on to something here. Hoop earrings were actually appropriated from ancient aliens.
And what if, the circular shape of those metallic hoop earrings allowed ancient peoples to tap into the world-encircling magnetic field markers used by alien visitors for navigation, and make more efficient pilgrimages to the holy landing sites of ancient spacecraft?
Ancient astronaut theorists say "yes". (Which would make a great t-shirt).
It's not your job to educate us.
One of the simplest possible ear rings to make would be the hoop. Hence, early peoples with primitive metal working skills all over the place made them. duh
Universities have been hard at work normalizing hatred of white people, somehow believing that it will result in more equality.
But remember, "Love Trumps Hate".
Maybe when I wasn't looking they changed the definition of hate so that one cannot commit hate speech against white people, similar to how they redefined racism to make racism against white people not really racist.
If white nationalism qualifies as a hate movement, then so does social justice activism. But only one of these has massive institutional inertia. And you know who else granted institutional inertia to a hate movement?
King George III?
LBJ?
Tony?
Isaac Newton?
Che'?
because they look great.
um
Bamboo doorknockers are where it's at. Reminds me of high school in Queens.
I like hoop earrings. The bigger the hoop, the greater the sluttiness of the wearer. I thought that everyone knew that.
Actually, they look kinda trashy, but that's neither here nor there.

"Cultural Appropriation" is Socialism, and it's one of the very very few forms that this hard-core libertarian can approve of: "Ideas and customs from each culture according to their ability, and to each culture according to their needs!"
That's because, insofar as concepts don't have monetary or other material value attached to them (I suppose they sometimes do), the rules of economics don't apply. 🙂
"Ideas and customs from each culture according to their ability, and to each culture according to their needs!"
So now we have cultural Marxism
"Of all the weird things the campus left believes, this one probably takes the *cake*"
Robby. Still king of the Reason staff's trolls.
How about, "I can wear whatever the fuck I want to wear, so fuck off, slaver"
These people are more conservative than the puritans
Calling her a slaver might be just a wee bit triggering.
Because as a Latina her ancestors enslaved so many people?
*ducks*
As someone who never participated in Dorm Life, but had to live in private off campus housin, can someone explain to me what the fuck an RA is? Why is a student in a position of authority over other students? Are they like summer camp counselors? Are dorm students really treated like mentally damaged children?
I am thinking that this one single distinction between living on campus and off campus explains everything there is about the the insanity sweeping our universities. Bulldoze the dorms and make the students live in apartments and houses like adults do, and get rid of this bizarro world identitarian snowflaky idiocy once and for all.
Where I went to school, the RAs did close to nothing. They got a discounted single room, gave away free condoms and were, in theory, available if anyone had a problem they needed to talk about. The closest they came to enforcing any kid of rules was to advise us against having kegs in dorm rooms or dealing drugs too openly.
In ours, if the pot smell was too strong, they'd come in to tell us that burning incense was against the rules and to put it out.
We always just burned toast with our illegal toaster while toking up in the dorm room. It seemed to work pretty well.
Our campus security were not police and no one gave a shit about weed smell. It was also back in the dim dark ages when you could smoke in your room.
Literally the only things you could get in trouble for was big keg parties (though that did happen) and openly dealing to an idiotic degree.
They were originally meant to be like an HR department for the dorm. They take complaints, resolve conflicts, lay out ground rules, etc. But many seem to have morphed into social justice enforcement units because, to the true believers, everything is political. And every chance to advance social justice must be seized. It's an obsession that gives their pointless lives the illusion of greater meaning.
It's an obsession that gives their pointless lives the illusion of greater meaning.
yeah that pretty accurately describes the SJWs I know
I'd love to know if Schumer, et al, were ra's.
They have appropriated warrior culture.
HR Department for dorms. There are no HR departments for apartment complexes. Why does a dorm need anything resembling an HR department? HR departments are for businesses large enough to be broken up into departments.
There are no HR departments for apartment complexes.
But there are resident associations and superintendents, which can come pretty close.
Not in any apartment building I have ever lived in. I got a set of rules from the landlord, or the management company, but that's it. Maybe I just never lived in a sufficiently proggie neighborhood.
I got a set of rules from the landlord, or the management company, which I immediately ignored.
They are supposed to be "hall monitors". They end up being students who just get discounted housing for doing basically nothing.
That sounds like a micro aggression; such a statement would totally invalidate an RA with grand delusions of SJW.
It's perfect.
""can someone explain to me what the fuck an RA is?""
I believe it stands for Resident Authoritarian.
According to the evidence above, it stands for "racist asshole".
Universities were created in Italy and evolved from Cathedral schools for the clergy during the High Middle Ages.[3] - Wiki
Everyone 's response should be that if she's not Italian her presence is cultural appropriation and you'll take your hoops out once she quits school.
Indeed.
In fact, any use of a University for any purpose other than the development and dissemination of Catholic theology is a cut-and-dried case of cultural appropriation.
Modern-day prostitutes appropriated platform shoes from ancient Italian prostitutes. Show your true height/leg length or go back to being a shepherdess.
What's a sombreror?
It's like the king of Mexico.
Peasant child: "But the Somberor has no Sombrero!"
Peasant adults:
That put me off. Sounds too much like sober.
I think it would be someone who makes and/or sells sombreros. Or it could be someone who wears a sombrero. I don't know, I'll have to ask a Spanish-speaking friend.

Pitzer College RA Tells White Girls to Stop Wearing Hoop Earrings: It's Cultural Appropriation
Whatever happened to embracing and experiencing other cultures? Why, it's almost like proggies want everyone segregated into separate groups forever and always or something.
Yes. Because it lets east coast white proggies get a warm tingly feeling when they can point out all the different cultures down the hillside. "Happy little darkies," or something like that.
You embrace and experience them by quietly sitting down and obeying the diktat of their self-appointed representatives, of course.
Tony?
It is a bit ironic that many of the people pushing the "cultural appropriation" BS are the same people telling us we must celebrate and embrace diversity.
The leftards are pushing for segregation these days because integration has advanced to the point that most normal people don't have an axe to grind over race issues. This is the same reason that they perpetrate fake racist incidents.
-jcr
This should kill them.
http://people.com/style/oversi.....s-to-shop/
Robby how can you look at this shit everyday without your soul withering away? I read like every other article you post on this topic and it makes me want to weep and drink...
"What the fuck is wrong with peace, love, and understanding you god damn savages!" he screamed at the world.
THAT'S WHAT THE MONEY IS FOR!
I know this is a bottom-of-the-barrel proggie outrage, but since the hoop earrings have not been banned by anyone, who is harmed again?
Did you have a point?
Baldor is my wingman.
It's not about harm, it's about hypocrisy, since, according to Prog logic, "I have to imagine being told by your RA that you have to change your clothes because there's something inherently wrong with you is a fairly marginalizing experience," but it's OK because it's happening to white people.
I don't think anyone is calling for this girl to be thrown in prison.
So...no one harmed, if you don't count the delicate sensibilities of a few libertarians. For a moment there I thought the NAP had been violated. Carry on, and be careful out there. College students have opinions!
And they're often wrong. Is there something wrong with disagreeing with someone when you feel they are wrong? Especially when that person is ostensibly in the process of getting an education?
Disagree all you want. Let me know when it has some tangible effect on college students being assholes.
DanO.|3.10.17 @ 4:32PM|#
"For a moment there I thought the NAP had been violated."
You should read before you post; you might not look so stupid.
"The first ever hoop earring have been linked to the Sumerian culture, which is now known as Iraq. They then became popular in Egypt, Greece, and Rome."
http://www.finishtheoutfit.com/blog/hoop_earring/
"It's great that Pitzer has a free speech wall, and it's great that Martinez exercised her right to contribute an offensive, racist statement to the wall."
Well, if they really had free speech, they wouldn't need a wall.
Good point, that everyone seems to have missed.
+1 Mao Ze Dong's "Let a Thousand Flowers Bloom".
The wall allows people to speak anonymously (at least in theory), which other methods of communication don't allow even in free-speech utopias.
"The wall allows people to speak anonymously"
Only if no nobody's looking.
except on the Reason message boards
Preet's been shitcanned.
if your feminism isn't intersectional take off those hoops
Wait, isn't the whole point that the (white) students who are wearing hoop earrings aren't intersectional? It's the sufficiently intersectional ones who don't wear them, right? This is all so confusing.
Just watched Remy's fake news bit and loved it. Then saw this article. . I can't help but ask myself: Am I being baited into believing this shit based upon selective reporting because it fit's Reason's narrative? Or are ALL college kids these days authoritarian left-winged fascists. Not sure of the answer to that, but couldn't help by make the connection.
Probably a bit of both, although it isn't really news that the RA position tends to attract petty tyrants.
They graduate and become HOA board members.
I think it is important to keep some perspective about stuff like this and not assume that all or even very many college students think like this. But it's also good to keep an eye on this kind of idiocy.
It would be nice to see some reporting looking into how prevalent things like this really are.
Agreed! Obviously only the most outrageous ones make national news, but there seem to be more and more lately... probably has more to do with the growing addiction to outrage culture, on both sides. It's easy to get stuck in some vicious cycle where you're offended that they're offended.
this shit is happening. a good friend's son was the student President of a California University just two years ago and legal advisor after he graduated. the stories he tells are scary. he will be a great politician someday.
I'll withhold his name to protect the innocent for now.
Unless you are the first stone age man to fashion an animal hide into a garment, use fire to cook meat, or the first to bang two rocks together in some sort of rhythm, you are guilt of cultural appropriation. All cultures are derived from and influenced by other cultures.
I give up on potatoes and potatoes.
If you're not an ancient Roman, take off those hoops!
But, hey, it's not my job to educate her about "history".
Good points and quality link to the article by Timpf (winged eyeliner too? Really??). Keep up the good work, Robby!
The best comment from that article, "I certainly hope that those black and brown girls aren't straightening their hair." It really goes both ways.
When my kid was in college, he shared a three-bedroom campus apartment with an Iraqi guy and a couple of other guys. The RA scheduled a visit early in the semester to discuss expectations of residents and multiculturalism, and they conspired to punk her.
My son and the Iraqi agreed to feign Islamic fundamentalism. Hilarity ensued.
They let her go through her spiel on the rules and expectations without comment. Then, she asked whether they had any questions. No questions, but with a straight face, they expressed appreciation for the alcohol ban and promised to report infractions. Then she launched into a multiculturalism indoctrination.
Before she got far, my son and Mohammad asked why the university allows their infidel roommates to keep pork in the refrigerator and cook pork in the kitchen. They asked why the university bans alcohol but does not ban pork. She responded that all of the residents have to respect different cultures, and figure out how to get along, making reasonable accommodations.
Then, my son and Mohammad announced that it was prayer time, and that they had to pray apart from non-believers. However, they insisted that the RA wait for them to complete prayers as a reasonable accommodation.
When they returned from "prayers", they advised the RA that her presence really was in violation of their religion's sensibilities, and they really didn't understand how the university could be so insensitive as to send a woman RA into a Muslim man's apartment.
That was the last time the RA ever bothered them.
Brilliant
Still waiting for these bitches to stop speaking, reading, writing and attending school, in Anglish.
Why is this even a discussion? The response is 'Fuck off' and then do it anyway (if you want to do so)
It's a discussion because a handful of libertarians are offended that someone, somewhere, is wrong.
Nope DanO, it is just hilarious fun to point at idiots and laugh. A sport, as it were.

Are you willfully dense or just not bright enough to post here?
Which race popularized hoop earrings?
The progressive one.

Stop appropriating Pirate Culture!
Daryl Hall gets it
iN THE ASS.
Anita Sarkessian was unconsoleable.
If you are going to try to enforce tribalism in 2017 I have bad news for you: that cat is out of the bag. It is not possible to define the tribe of black people or white people or brown people by clothing or music or hair any more. At one time, sure. Just a few miles away people dressed differently and if you went over there they would kill you. When I went to Japan many years ago, more men wore suits than over here. Can we make them stop? hahahaha. Everywhere in the world people wear blue jeans and T-shirts. And some of the clothing that these idiots want to call "black" clothing is really ghetto clothing, like pants worn half way down your butt. Is that some racist tribalism or what?
then blacks must give up hip hop!!!
white guy frank Zappa created hip hop after watching his children playing on their new toys " Hippity hops " he noticed the rhythm as they were bouncing around and having fun talking funny.
In that case, non-whites, get off my campus, which originated in white culture to liberate us from oppression by ignorance.
Note: This is satire.
"Hoop earrings with fourteen-sided beads derived from late Roman jewelry and were adopted by eastern Germanic women in the fifth century. " - Met Museum
No, hoops not invented by the romans, but if europeans were wearing them in the fifth century, wear them guilt-free.
I hate these whining motherfuckers more each day, my blood boiling, seething hatred for the crybaby, red diaper brigade knows no boundaries which leads me to have unlibertarian thoughts like having these commie idiots lined up and gunned down. If that happened I would not shed a tear, now that these control freak, Orwellian idiots are screaming, make them cry even harder and wear the shit out of those hoop earrings white girls. If one of these violent, psychotic thugs get in your way or punch you don't go to the gelded campus police, press charges against them at a actual police station, they might not do anything but you can spread the names, faces, e mail addresses and dorm room numbers so these people can be piled on. Its time to start kicking ass and taking names, this limp wristed stuff us libertarians and conservatives peddle every time we're attacked needs to go away. We should only fight back in defense, and if we do the enemy needs to be utterly annihilated, instead of just putting a stake through their heart we need to cut off the head and burn the body, metaphorically of course;)
Don't beat around the bush, RLW - let 'em know how you reallyfeel!
I agree. Get off the fence here, RLW!

... and I'm not one of them.
Fuck off.
I'm opposed to euthanasia and capital punishment, but I'm starting to think that exceptions should be made for everyone who complains about "Cultural Appropriation."
The use of the term by anyone should be considered a confession of guilt and the punishment be carried out immediately by whoever is closest to them at the time.
so, does anyone know the "sensitive" original source of hoop earrings that makes them so offensive? I've seen them on images of pirates.... male seafarers. And ancient egyptian scenes often show them as well. Maybe even back to Babylon..... so WHO ARE THESE monitors of "correctness" who have the authority to dictate WHICH if the cultural appropriations are "OK" and which are "racist"? Did they come from Mayan? How about polynesians? Chinese? And who knows whether the target "culture" of thise ditz' imagination did not get them from somewhere else? What goes around comes around.....
Seems the level of haughtiness and arrogance of late has been growing at some incredible rate. I believe it has naught to do with racism, but some big-headed control freaks making up excuses to pile onto some selected classes of people to make them seem.... unfit. Tear down THAT ONE to make ME feel more important?
That's the old game of "your mommy wears combat boots" back from kindergarten. Grow UP.
"mi cultura" in the middle of a paragraph written in English...
My guess is Ms. Aguilera is so oppressed that she can't make time to learn the language she clearly appreciates.
Ah, and the left wimp Pitzer administrators keep silent rather than leading. Don't they realize that the brand is being screwed. One more story of left, racist excess being coddled at the Pomona Colleges. Who would ever hire someone from one of those schools?
The RA should be removed immediately just as a white RA that claims a person of color can't eat casserole or needs to drink from a different fountain should be removed. The issue here isn't free speech. It is overt racism.
As for oppression. Regardless of what color your skin is or what gender you think you are, you are eliminated from the ability to claim oppression of any kind if you are being educated at a private college like Pitzer. You are the elite. Spend some time with the peasants before you claim oppression.
