Trump's Fake News Attack on Sweden, Immigrants, and Crime

The president talks nonsense about refugees, immigrants, and crime.

Is it really safe for you to return to Sweden, asked an American friend, jokingly, when I prepared to check out from my hotel in Washington, D.C. President Donald Trump had just warned his audience in Melbourne, Florida, about Muslim immigrants and terrorism in Europe. "You look at what happened last night in Sweden" the president yelled, "Sweden! Who would believe this!"

Swedes took to social media to speculate about which awful event he referred to. An aged pop star had technical problems during rehearsal for a popular music contest, observed someone. Another Swede tweeted that out of respect for the families of victims we should not speculate about the terrible event until after it actually occurs. #lastnightinsweden quickly became a meme.

Soon Trump took to Twitter to admit that he was not referring to something that happened in Sweden last night, but something that happened on Fox News last night. Tucker Carlson had interviewed Ami Horowitz about a documentary claiming that Muslim refugees were the cause of an "incredible surge in violence" in Sweden.

This short segment was so full of distortions that it could be used as exhibit A for Trump's claim that the media peddles fake news. A Swedish policeman who was interviewed for the documentary claimed that Horowitz edited the footage to make it seem like he answered other questions, making it seem like the officer warned about refugees when the officer did not. The officer referred to Horowitz as "a madman."

According to Ami Horowitz, "it was not long ago that the first Islamist terrorist attack occurred in the country." In fact, the only known attempt was in December 2010, more than six years ago (and no one was harmed but the attacker).

But Trump's defenders have countered by arguing that violent crime has risen dramatically in Sweden since the surge of refugees began arriving in 2014. Swedish crime, you see, is not about Swedish crime any more. It's about the risk posed by Muslims and refugees.

But if crime is rising dramatically, that phenomenon would not just be picked up by Fox News and Breitbart, but also by crime statistics. So what does the data say?

Yes, immigrants to Sweden do commit more crimes than people born in Sweden, in contrast to countries like the United States, where immigrants commit less crime than the native-born. That's partly because refugees to Sweden are much poorer and less educated, and because they have a much harder time finding a job. The Swedish economy has been liberalized over the last two decades, but we've made exceptions for the labor market, which still makes it difficult to work and easy to claim welfare.

There has also been an increase in organized crime in recent years. In a country with harsh drug laws, gangs fight over who gets to sell cannabis in specific territories. Large-scale immigration has contributed since new entrants want a piece of the pie.

And yet the data fail to record the incredible surge in violence that Trump's defenders talk about. The homicide rate is almost exactly what it was a decade ago, despite the gang wars. The latest Swedish Crime Survey, from the Swedish Council for Crime Prevention, shows that the population exposed to assault has declined by 0.7 percentage point in the last 10 years, and offenses against the person in general "is approximately the same level as in 2005″—almost a decade before the surge of refugees.

But isn't Sweden the rape capital of the world, as members of the alt-right constantly point out? Sure, Sweden has more registered sex offenses than other countries. But the willingness to report such crimes differs dramatically between countries. A culture where you talk openly about such crimes, and don't blame the victims, will also have more cases reported. Sweden has made a conscious effort to get women to report any offense, whereas countries like Saudi Arabia and Mozambique do everything to stop women from reporting. (They have almost no offenses. Fabulous!)

Sweden differs from other countries in two more ways. The definition of rape has been extended to include sexual abuse not considered rape in other countries. In the year that change was made the number of rape offenses increased by 66 percent!

This is the reason why some people claim that Julian Assange is being investigated for rape by Swedish authorities for "almost nothing." Ironically, this is often heard from the same groups who claim that Sweden is the world's rape capital.

And unlike in other countries, if a husband rapes his wife every day during the last year, this is filed as 365 separate cases in Sweden, not as one case, as in most countries (or zero, as in Saudi Arabia) to make the crime more visible in statistics and in the debate.

So basically, Sweden doesn't have many more registered sex offenses because we are more criminal, or have more Muslim immigrants. We have them because we are more feminist.

Was it safe to return to Sweden? I scrolled through the statistics on my phone when I prepared to check out from my U.S. hotel. Last year there were 135 homicides in Washington D.C., population 670,000. That's 30 more than in the whole of Sweden, population 10 million.

  1. Last year there were 135 homicides in Washington D.C., population 670,000. That’s 30 more than in the whole of Sweden, population 10 million.

Hypothesize about this at your own risk.

    1. I have always found arguments along these lines to be absurdly blind to the racial implications that would be drawn if it was any other statistic.

      1. Luckily DC is not a state so we can skip it and not mess up our red state vs blue state correlations between crime and religion and whatnot.

    2. Swedes Lives Matter?

      1. Only the bikini team.

    3. And Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have a lower homicide rate than Sweden. Be safe.

    4. That’s 30 more than in the whole of Sweden, population 10 million.

That’s just because their terrorists throw their grenades like girls.

      1. So, you haven’t seen their softball teams, then.

        1. Refugee immigrant migrant softball teams? Tell me more!

    5. >> Yes, immigrants to Sweden do commit more crimes than people born in Sweden, in contrast to countries like the United States, where immigrants commit less crime than the native-born.

      Dishonest on two levels.
      1) Admitting immigrants in Sweden commit more crimes – but excusing it.
      2) Failing to separate CRIMINAL ALIENS from LAWFUL IMMIGRANTS in America.

Sweden has created it’s own problems by allowing a destructive element to enter.
America has laws to prevent this from happening – but America has been betrayed by Obozo.

  2. Somehow this rebuttal still manages to make Sweden sound terrible.

      1. Bernie Sanders?

      2. Okay, would.

        1. Mama Mia!

    1. Sweden has made a conscious effort to get women to report any offense…

      Much like our nation’s universities.

  3. If someone rapes someone twice, that isn’t two crimes?
If I speed from the cops, they only charge me with the first light I blow through, right?

  4. Weren’t there riots last night?

    1. nope, nothing to see there. There were no arrests, so no crime.

      1. yeah WTF. there were a dozen cars burned in Rinkeby last night, cops assaulted, a reporter was beaten.

that crime data sounds like garbage in, garbage out.

        1. One riot equals an epidemic?

Note that the riot that you mention wasn’t Swedes rioting over a surge in crimes committed by immigrants.

          1. riots are a periodic recurrence in Rinkeby. 2010, 2013, now 2017.

            1. Whoa now. Looks like Sweden is collapsing due to a total of three riots occurring over a period of 7 years. Sucks for them.

              1. Denying Sweden is having any serious problems assimilating their non-white migrants is even more inane than Trump’s exaggeration of the problem.

                1. There is an argument to be made against Islam, and reasons to be more suspicious of people who practice it. However, in this specific instance, I feel like non-Muslim foreigners might have similar issues. If these people were committing terrorist attacks, killing apostates, etc… it would be a Muslim-specific problem.

                  1. Exactly. We all know that Islam is a religion of peace.

And Brutus is an honorable man.

              2. I live in Detroit. You know how many riots we’ve had in that same time period?

                Zero.

                1. I don’t believe it…

                  Someone lives in Detroit?

                  1. Yeah, I do too. Well, just outside, but I work there.

              3. Whoa now. Looks like Sweden is collapsing due to a total of three riots occurring over a period of 7 years. Sucks for them.

Yea, they have a lot of catching up to do with disgruntled American Democrats.

          2. Dang Youths

            http://www.bbc.com/news/10276738

These rape stats are bunk but there is a big problem there and it’s been going on for years.

            1. Same suburb. It sounds like this specific location in Sweden has a problem. It also seems that this problem isn’t related to the Syrian refugees that Trump is so worried about.

              1. Perhaps it’s the water.

                1. Magic dirt.

Maybe the rapefugees forgot to shake it from their shoes before they came to Sweden.

If only they had shaken off that magic dirt, the Swedish magic dirt could have converted them to ABBA.

              2. There were riots in 2016 in the Syrian heavy suburb of Alby.

                1. There were riots in 2016 in the Syrian heavy suburb of Alby.

I wonder how many of those 105 murders happened there?

              3. It also seems that this problem isn’t related to the Syrian refugees that Trump is so worried about.

No, that would be Somalian refugees/immigrants.

            2. Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal

              From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Widespread organised child sexual abuse took place in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, between 1997 and 2013. Local investigations into the abuse began in 1999 and some reports were never finalised or made public.[1] In 2010, five British-Pakistani men were found guilty of a series of sexual offences against girls as young as twelve.[2] A subsequent investigation by The Times reported that the child sex exploitation was much more widespread, and the Home Affairs Select Committee criticised the South Yorkshire Police force and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council for their handling and covering up of the abuse.

After sentencing, two of the convicted men shouted “Allahu Akbar” as they were led out of the court.

        2. Riots aren’t crimes in Sweden. They’re celebrations of diversity.

        3. Socialist governments report statistics that protect the power of….. socialists governments.

  5. but then they had riots in Sweden just last night I guess Trump can foretell the future

    http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/s…..1-04-33-36

    1. They obviously got mad at what Trump said and rioted as a result. I don’t believe this but I guarangoddamntee we’ll be seeing this argument somewhere in the old media.

      1. TRUMP INCITES VIOLENCE IN OTHERWISE PEACEFUL SWEDEN
Racist Right-wing Trump Supporters Infiltrate Immigrant Community

        1. “Racist ALT-Right-wing Trump Supporters Infiltrate Immigrant Community”

          There, FIFY

  6. then what’s with the rioting by young immigrants in Rinkeby?

    https://tinyurl.com/hscgqpr

    1. Isolated blip, statistical anomaly, SHUT UP RACIST!

  7. “Last year there were 135 homicides in Washington D.C., population 670,000. That’s 30 more than in the whole of Sweden, population 10 million.”

    Good warning to Sweden.

    1. Yeah, don’t visit DC.

    2. Killer Muslims are invading DC.

      Keep up.

      1. Close enough.

      2. Thank you Minneapolis

  8. Reason is just going into full-bore denial. Crime in Sweden in skyrocketed since their surge in Muslim immigration, years ago. There was another riot just the other day. Sweden is suffering a surge in grenade attacks, for heaven’s sake. You get one guess as to which “diverse” areas of the country have grenade attacks.

Muslims rape over 300 Swedish children and 700 women in the first seven months of 2013: Crime Statistics

300 Swedes have left to fight in Middle East

    Sweden’s ugly immigration problem

      1. “No arrests were made”

        parse that crime data

    1. You guys are setting a high bar for shitty sourcing and random, meaningless statistics. A surge in grenade attacks? What the fuck? The article you’re commenting on provided you with meaningful statistics. What the fuck is this nonsense?

        1. Gah, that ultra alt-right reuters.

      1. You don’t believe several dozen grenade attacks a year in a country of 10 million is serious?

        1. Agreed, that’s only one grenade attack for every 833,333.33 (repeating of course) citizens. Statistically insignificant!

    2. The more important question: How does that compare to DC grenade attacks?

      1. No shit.

      2. No arrests were made in any DC grenade attack.

    3. Ah yes, “The Muslim Issue,” definitely a reputable news source.

    4. Their fanatical dedication to open borders has blinded them. They refuse to acknowledge that Muslims don’t assimilate well into western society, and that they are causing severe problems in Western Europe which will inevitably inspire backlash. There are several topics which they refuse to write about or just dismiss as irrelevant because they lack the courage to address honesty.

That “Free Minds” line on the page header is bullshit.

    5. You are making the same stupid mistake everybody makes, except Trump, who just is stupid and spouts any kind of nonsense.

You can’t compare crime rates among countries.

Britain, for instance, doesn’t count a death as a homicide until someone is convicted of the crime. That probably cuts the homicide rate in half.

The US messes with the definition of violent crimes, property crimes, etc, all the time. Other countries no doubt do the same.

You are comparing not just apples and oranges, but from different seasons.

      It’s all hogwash.

      1. While absolute rates aren’t comparable, trends are. That is, if crime rates in the US decrease while they skyrocket in Sweden, then that tells you something.

      2. Or by a factor of 10. Think of how many homicides here go unsolved. What do they call it in UK if someone
is shot or stabbed to death – an incident? an assault? suspicious death?

        1. It depends, if the perp is asian (read muslim), then the crime is ignored and of course not counted or reported in any meaningful way.

    6. Oh come on, grenade attacks are not riots. Nothing to see here, move along.

    7. Reason is just going into full-bore denial.

      SJWs Always Lie
      SJWs Always Double Down

  9. I’m not fully convinced, but I really appreciated this article. Norberg always provides great perspective (thanks).

Among the things that do not fully convince me:
    – you suggest that poverty is a factor that contributes to crime. That seems plausible, but the causation could also run the other way around. There are a number of poor but low-crime areas in the US which suggest that poverty is not a sufficient or dominant explanation.
    – sure, the definition of the measures on rape have changed at a point in time. Does that explain all of the observed change in data? Does that explain trends?

    1. Poverty is a cause of rape? Really?

      1. According to the left, all bad comes from income inequality, which is racist.

        1. Well, millionaires commit more crime than billionaires.

          1. Then the treasury needs to give everybody a billion dollars and problem solved.

    2. I think a big part of the problem in Europe is that the trade unions have made it nearly impossible for people to get jobs. Sure many of our immigrants start out in the slums but they can work if they want to, and they can get ahead of they want to. In Europe, you’re stuck there.

    1. Apparently rape is super broadly defined — see the above article.

      1. Reading the article is literally rape.

        1. Idk if it’s rape… but it’s definitely violence to be exposed to that which is subjectively disagreeable.

          1. It felt like rape. That is what matters.

      2. This is true – just ask Julian Assange.

      3. Yeah, I’m gonna take Johan Norberg’s word on this one.

        1. So in Sweden most rapes aren’t rape-rape?

          1. I’m not sure about most, but in the case of Sweden and it’s definition of rape, is pretty crazy. *See Assange case

            1. Yes, but is that typical? I’ve always assumed Assange was targeted as part of an intelligence operation. Sweden’s laws just made it possible.

              1. Assange’s charges are just an example for the kind of laws they have regarding rape. If I’ve had what I could reasonably assume was consensual sex with a women who the following day changes her mind and decides it wasn’t consensual, that’s definitely not “rape-rape”. Os it typical, not sure, but Sweden does have some pretty bizarre laws as they relates to rape, making charges that’s it’s the rape capital of the world or that they’re importing rapist by the thousands, at the very least, questionable.

                1. So, just like here pretty much?

          2. It depends on which political argument the progressive who is using Swedish rape statistics is trying to win.

    2. What is a “rape country”?

      1. *Hands Hail a Bluray copy of Escape from NY*

      2. Is it like ‘flavor country”?

  10. How dare anyone say anything about the riots!

  11. What year did the rape definition change? If there was in initial uptick due to semantics wouldn’t a more recent upsurge reflect something else? I only had time to scan the article so I may have missed the explanation though.

      1. “I don’t know the answer to a pretty relevant question, but here; read this TOTALLY non-biased article on a site called “The Muslim Issue”.”

        1. As opposed to “unbiased” official new sources approved by the Swedish government and parroting their “statistics”?

          1. Lies, damn lies, and statistics. This shit has gotten so politicized that I don’t believe any it from either side without vetting the information myself.

          2. Given their government’s “liberal” definition of rape, I doubt they’re under reporting.

          3. Is non-biased is kinda like undocumented immigrant?

  12. A graph of Sweden grenade attacks. Perhaps some sophist can explain this away by claiming that Sweden redefined “grenade attack.”

    1. This guy is amazing. Not in a good way, though.

    2. how do they get grenades??!! are these homemade bombs stuffed into Mickey’s big mouth malt liquor bottles?

      1. Real grenades from Bosnian war according to news reports.

        1. Well there you go. It is Bosnians, not Muslims. Read it tomorrow at Reason.

          1. Aren’t most Bosnians Muslim?

            1. There you go making blanket accusations.

      2. “how do they get grenades??”

        Asking for a friend

        1. I was assuming it was an Anchorman reference.

      3. I want some.

    3. PapayaSF is angling for a job at a fake news site.

    4. I’m mostly interested in why Sweden has so many grenades. Why are there so many more grenade attacks there than in any other country that doesn’t have a war going on? Lots of other European countries have loads of Muslim refugees, but not a ton of grenade attacks. Seems odd.

      1. Has to be impossible with their weapons laws. Same way rape was outlawed there.

    5. I’m standing with PapayaSF on the grenade attacks. It’s real and the mouths who haven’t followed the links in the Wikipedia article could maybe shut up and do their homework. Empty talking points need to die quickly.

  13. “Yes, immigrants to Sweden do commit more crimes than people born in Sweden, in contrast to countries like the United States, where immigrants commit less crime than the native-born.”

Wrong. Crime surrounding immigrants is a complete unknown because nobody tracks the data. Anything you may be looking at that you think proves immigrant crime in Sweden is higher or immigrant crime in the US is lower is completely false because the data simply does not exist.

In the US, only DHS monitors prisoner nationality in federal prisons. Federal prisons are a small portion of the entire prison system and therefore not representative of the country as a whole. But, for what it’s worth, the number of immigrants in federal prison is higher than the number of immigrants in the general population.

As for crime in Sweden, according their own official statistics, the number of reported crimes between 2006-2015 has increased 23%. And there has been a general increase in all crime categories since 1975, which is in opposition to the lowering crime rate in the developed world over that same period of time.

    1. I have yet to see a study or report from Cato, or Reason, or Forbes, or any number of places I respect and support indicating the crime rates for illegal immigrants. It is always the crime rate of all immigrants, which, I agree, will be lower than natives. Much of this is because legal immigrants, until they become citizens, have to be extra careful to not break laws or risk being deported.

    2. This guy did a pretty good job of trying to decode the US crime data

      http://www.americanthinker.com…..ns_do.html

      1. The problem is, those GAO numbers he’s using are “estimates.”

Nobody actually knows the real numbers. And the estimates vary wildly depending on the partisan beliefs of the people making them.

    3. the number of immigrants in federal prison is higher than the number of immigrants in the general population

What does it take to believe something that retarded?

      1. Sorry. Percentage wise.

The percentage of federal prisoners who are immigrants is higher than the percentage of the population that are immigrants.

        1. Ah. Yes, weird how that happens to the second-class among us.

    4. “the number of immigrants in federal prison is higher than the number of immigrants in the general population” That seems unlikely.

  14. Trump said Mexicans were raping our American women!

Does SFPapaya have a link for those stats too?

    1. If there are roughly 30 million people of Mexican descent in the US, that means there are roughly 15 million among them of the male persuasion.

Setting aside the rad-fem insistence that all men are rapists, it is still highly improbable that there are no rapists among them. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that claim lies in the “no duh” zone.

      1. there are reports of coyotes raping people as they smuggle them to the US.

        1. If coyotes were allowed to marry, the would have no reason to rape.

    2. Trump said Mexicans were raping our American women!

Yes, so? Are you saying no Mexican has ever raped an American woman? Otherwise, Trump’s statement is true.

  15. No mention of the three afghans who live streamed their rape of a Swedish woman.

CNN doesn’t even mention that they are afghans.

    http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/24/…..book-live/

USA Today reports they are Afghan

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/…../97633012/

    1. They are Swedish in their hearts and that women in there country would have to have like 8 male witnesses to even have someone to testify there was a rape.

    2. Who are you going to believe, that lying video or a Reason writer?

  16. It is amazing how quickly we have redefined our way to the “fake news” label.

We used to have news stories or claims that were right or wrong – or some nuance in between.

Then we got fact checkers. They redefined “wrong” or “I disagree” to varying degrees of lies. So a disputable claim becomes a “pants on fire” lie by your political opponents, and “One Pinocchio” if by your fellow traveler.

That took several years. Now we have the “fake news” label, which has moved in the space of 2 months from “made-up click bait stories on click-farm websites” to “stories that I don’t agree with” and finally to “claims by those that I don’t like.” That’s a fantastic metamorphosis.

The documentary in question isn’t “fake news”. It is a disputed story featuring plenty of interviews with Swedish police. The higher ups in Sweden claim everything is out of context and untrue. I’m sure there are plenty in Sweden who take the opposite position.

Fox ran a story based on the reporting of others. Something that just isn’t done in this day and age. Oh, wait. That’s pretty much 100% of e the media these days.

Then Trump makes some toss-off claim during a speech, based on a story he (or staff) saw on Fox.

And now we are calling that “fake news”.

You might call it disputed. Or even wrong, if you are strongly inclined to take Swedish authorities at their word. But “fake news?” That carries the implication of a deliberate lie. And I don’t think that is supportable.

    1. And his luck couldn’t have been better. Two days later is a riot in one of those “no go” zones we are told don’t exist.

Opponents will focus on pedantic arguments about what happened on Friday while accidentally drawing attention to a pretty big fcking anecdote that aligns with Trump’s story.

    2. The term coined by the left and adopted by the right should die a thousand painful deaths.

      1. It was a fine term for the made up click-bait stories that it originally referred to (a lot of which were made up by left wingers to try to bait right wingers into looking stupid).

        1. Meh, I remember it mainly being used to justify why Hillary lost. Then I saw it adopted by the “alt-right” on twitter. Now it seems Trump is keen on making it part of his twitter vocabulary.

Also, fuck you for making me defend Trump and refer to the alt-right in a single comment.

          /sarc

      2. Originally they were just ad revenue schemes.

    3. Whose a libertarian to believe, renegade reporters interviewing people about their first hand experiences or the official response of government bureaucrats?

  17. Another Trump lie. The riots weren’t last night, they were tomorrow night.

    1. People need to stop underestimating Trump’s prescient abilities. He will be the God Emperor.

      1. Trump *is* the God Emperor.

      2. You know who else became evil after having premonitions?

    2. Maybe they forgot the eight hour time difference?

  18. I was disappointed to not see it start with Dead Wrong! The video will probably be better than the book^Warticle.

  19. lolll @ “blame the victim.” It’s amazing that, to expose one “rape culture” narrative (refugees), Reason is so willing to adopt another “rape culture” narrative (the “hunting ground” patriarchy).

    1. Must … avoid …. being … called … racist!

  20. Assimilation is a bitch when the prevasive political climate is so opposite the ideologies of the immigrants, and at the same time so welcoming to it.

  21. “You look at what happened last night in Sweden” the president yelled, “Sweden! Who would believe this!”

That’s a damn lie. “You look at what’s happening last night in Sweden” is what he said and that simply isn’t a statement you can argue about in any serious fashion. You can only argue over what you think he meant by what he said, and then you’re fake news for trying to put words in his mouth.

    1. You could say the same thing for many of his comments.

They tend to be sentence fragments that careen from one thought to the next before settling in on any one point. I don’t know exactly how one could argue with Trump. He says things like “It’s gonna be great, believe me” as policy statements. How do you argue with that?

Do you say, “No, it isn’t?” Do you ask “How exactly is this going to happen?” (hint: that just ends with some question-begging form of “It is going to be great, believe me”)

      1. Say what you will, no position is arguably a step up from the usual lies or the “public/private positions” of other politicians.

  22. I asked the fox for his crime statistics on violence against chickens and he clearly stated they show now evidence of increase.

  23. Do we trust the crime statistics? Why, of course we do. Why would they have any reason to adjust them? I doubt that Peoria, Sweden has many problems with violent crime. Might be some recent immigrants panhandling here and there and refugees sitting around in hastily constructed compounds on the very edge of town, wondering what to do with themselves. Then you go to places like Malmo and you see a definite trend. But don’t draw any conclusions from that. There is no problem.

  24. Although people keep repeating that, as I point out in this post where I briefly discuss a study by the CIS (http://necpluribusimpar.net/links-01292017/), we actually don’t know whether immigrants in the US commit are less likely to crimes than natives, because we don’t have good enough data. As I also explain in that post, however, there are very good reasons to think they do, even if not being native-born per se has no effect on the propensity to commit crimes.

    1. Here is the link to the post in question.

    2. *whether immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than natives (sorry of the typo)

    3. Almost by definition, legal immigrants commit fewer crimes than the general population, because once you commit a serious crime, you stop being a legal immigrant.

But lumping together “immigrants” is dishonest anyway. What you need to distinguish is (1) legal, skill-based immigrants, (2) legal, family-based immigrants, and (3) illegal aliens.

  25. So there is no immigrant crime or rapey like behavior from said immigrants? I mean these guys come from countries where celebration means giving women the Laura Logan treatment!

    1. Lara Logan

  26. Was it safe to return to Sweden? I scrolled through the statistics on my phone when I prepared to check out from my U.S. hotel. Last year there were 135 homicides in Washington D.C., population 670,000. That’s 30 more than in the whole of Sweden, population 10 million.

Yeah we don’t recommend anyone go to DC either.

    1. You will never find a more wretched hive of cosmotarian villainy than DC,

    2. DC residents. You mean those types who are always blathering on about their Disney timeshare, what GS level they’ve attained, who they’ve met, how good they are at golf, why a condo in Arlington is so worth the commute, how much they think they know about politics……or the ne’er do wells who wear ankle bracelets and get involved in road rage incidents, etc?

  27. Rape laws changed in 2005, Sweden reported a increase in 2016 for rape. The laws mean Sweden isn’t the rape capital of the world, but there is a large increase even with the more broad laws

  28. This is a pretty good example of an article that is not intellectually honest, fair, or even well researched.

There appears to be a real issue in Sweden. Just saying “nope, not so” followed by non-contextual (and some are claiming, essentially untrue) statistics is leaving a bad taste.

Start with what is true. Follow it wherever it goes. A=A

    1. This is a pretty good example of an article that is not intellectually honest, fair, or even well researched.

So, just like any other Reason article on immigration.

      Open Borders Uber Alles!
      There are 5 lights!

    2. Above is a pretty good example of a comment with an opinion without presenting any facts on which that opinion is based on.

There are issues in every county, looking at the stats per capita gives you an indication on the size of the problem and trends, keeping in mind the changes e.g. in legislation that can affect the reporting rate. Statistically speaking Sweden is way safer than USA.

Surge of refugees has not caused a significant raise in crime. Terrorism happens practically never. Frankly the whole terrorism issue is blown way out of proportion, it is not a real threat in the western world, nor is it anything new, just remember 70s and 80s.

  29. I found some preliminary 2016 stats from the BRA – Some national council that compiles stats:
    http://www.bra.se/bra/nytt-fra…..istik.html

    Crimes against persons
In 2016, more than 275 000 reported crimes against the person (Chapter 3-7. Penal Code), which is 17 500 (+7 percent) more crimes than the 2015 assault offenses increased by 4 per cent to 88 000 crimes. Assault against man over 18 years rose 1 percent, and abuse against children 0-17 years increased by 14 percent. The number of reported assaults against women over 18 years were basically unchanged from the previous year.

Reported offenses of gross violations of women increased by 2 percent to 1,870 crimes reported in 2016, and gross violation of integrity increased by 11 percent to 1 680 reported crimes.

The number of reported rapes increased by 13 percent to 6560 crime, while the reported crimes of sexual coercion and exploitation decreased 1 percent to 1 240. The number of reported crimes of sexual assault increased by 20 per cent to 10 500 crimes. ? Notified assault increased by 5 per cent to 54 200 crimes, while notified molestation fell 2 percent to 55,400 crimes.

    1. Thank you. Nordberg’s argument would be a lot more compelling if he actually cited year by year stats rather than comparisons that stick out as appearing cherry-picked. Assaults vs. 10 years ago – why not year by year? Was there a drop followed by an increase? Who knows from this post.

  30. Yes, immigrants to Sweden do commit more crimes than people born in Sweden,

    Q.E.D.

  31. Ah. So you’re saying Feminism causes crime.

  32. Migrants are over-represented in Sweish crime statistics, because they are unemployed, poor, isolated, and don’t speak the language according to Henrik Selin, political scientist and deputy director of the Swedish Institute and Politifact.

Given the experience in Germany, it is preposterous to suggest that there isn’t reason for concern. In fact, the character of big German cities has changed significantly due to migrants.

And note that both Sweden and Germany spend massively on supporting those migrants, and if they do eventually get jobs, they will be competing with the most vulnerable and low-end workers of those countries.

  33. So basically, Sweden doesn’t have many more registered sex offenses because we are more criminal, or have more Muslim immigrants. We have them because we are more feminist.

Well, between a Muslim man and a feminist, I certainly prefer the Muslim man. Modern day feminists are just evil.

  34. 36. Okay. Why are Sweden’s 55 no go zones overwhelmingly populated Islamic migrants?
Furthermore, why are Swedish paramedics requesting riot protection gear before entering migrant majority areas? The alt-right is infested by hyperbolic fact twisting idiots but it doesn’t take away from the facts that Sweden does have issues regarding migrants.

  37. Swedes took to social media to speculate about which awful event he referred to. An aged pop star had technical problems during rehearsal for a popular music contest, observed someone. Another Swede tweeted that out of respect for the families of victims we should not speculate about the terrible event until after it actually occurs. lastnightinsweden quickly became a meme.???? ???? ?????? ???

  38. It is very sad to see so many governments cook their books because doing otherwise would be having to admit that their opposition is right.

But this is the modus operendi of the left–they must be kept in power no matter how detrimental they are to their people.

And, before you suggest that ‘the right does it too’–no, they don’t. They can’t. They don’t have a complicit media that will allow them to hide truths. They face an adversarial media that would demand proof even if a statement was as innocuous as ‘the sky is blue’.

  39. “Yes, immigrants to Sweden do commit more crimes than people born in Sweden, in contrast to countries like the United States, where immigrants commit less crime than the native-born. That’s partly because refugees to Sweden are much poorer and less educated, and because they have a much harder time finding a job. The Swedish economy has been liberalized over the last two decades, but we’ve made exceptions for the labor market, which still makes it difficult to work and easy to claim welfare.”

This is just hilariously dishonest. Yeah, I’m sure their religion and culture has nothing to with it. It’s just all poverty and because they can’t find jobs! Why are libertarians adopting left-wing arguments to explain criminality?

  40. Do You want to get good income at home? do you not know how to start earnings on Internet? there are some popular methods to earn huge income at your home, but when people try that, they bump into a scam so I thought i must share a verified and guaranteed way for free to earn a great sum of money at home. Anyone who is interested should read the given article…

  41. I’ve been following crime and muslim immigrant issues in France, Holland, and particularly Sweden for over 5 years. I’m shocked that the author would give light to the clear fact that there is an enormous problem in Europe that is continually worsening.
It’s a combination of severe culture shock, immigration rates greater than assimilation rates, coupled with a very difficult, declining labor market that is designed to offer lifetime employment by inhibiting turnover. Very difficult for recent immigrants to have a career.

Trump is absolutely correct. Sweden has a very bad problem that any number of Swedish bloggers and journalists actively discuss and document if anyone would care to spend one minute investigating. The authorities, however, stridently deny any issue whatsoever.

  42. Congratulations, Norberg. You wrote that rare article that somehow manages to get even more fucking stupid and incorrect with each passing day.

  43. Perhaps this is all true. But I recall how reluctant the authorities (especially in Germany, but it happened in several countries in Europe) were to admit that anything happened during the New Years sex assaults in Cologne and various other cities. I also recall that the Rotherham gang rapes went on for well over a decade because any policeman who reported what was actually happening got sent to sensitivity training. I have heard that there are the usual no-go zones for the police, and that Malmo is especially dangerous — a subject the author carefully ignores. In much of the West, left-wing authorities are reluctant to admit to any problems with immigrants of any sort. If Sweden has no problem with immigrant crime, why did they stop reporting those numbers over a decade ago?

  44. this writer is an appeaser for jihad….

New Year’s in Islamizing Europe: Arson, Sexual Assault, Attacks on Police….
In Austria, it was shades of last New Year’s Cologne debacle, where mobs of Muslim men sexually attacked more than 500 German women on an evening the police, in a coverup, initially described as peaceful.
Stating that such Muslim thought dominates in other Western nations as well, Drouiche warns, “Qur??nic schools in the West are places that extol political Islam based on jihad and hatred of the ‘enemies.'”
This is in line with Islamic State doctrine, mind you. The group just recently issued a statement insisting that “‘to celebrate New Year’s Eve with the kuffar is to embrace their idolatry and paganism and to shun the rulings of our Lord. Allah says: ‘O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliya’ (friends, protectors, helpers), they are but Auliya’ of each other,'” reports OneIndia.

Comments don’t allow “words” over 50 characters, so sopy, paste and remove the spaces.

  46. Everything in this article has the left wing spin and rancid stench of bullshit. Is it not true women who tried to help these refugees have been raped and murdered. Or that many Europeans are moving to other nations with much tighter immigration laws? This article would have one think the Muslims are just melting into the culture of their new homes. Save it for the peaceful protesters at UC Berkeley. I’m sure they will believe you.

  47. Check out UK express. There are 50 no go zones

  48. So I didn’t read ALL the comments, and I probably won’t even circle back to check to see if I have any responses to this… But this whole mentality of “sweep it under the rug, it didn’t happen!” over immigrants is seriously BS. European countries in general have been super mellow and low crime for a long time. Many crime rates (murder etc) have been trending down globally, so the stats he states are technically true (that rates are comparable to 10-12 years ago)… But what he’s ignoring is that they’re going UP from their lows of a few years ago. Why? Increased sketchy immigrants. He admitted it himself right before dismissing it as a legitimate issue to worry about.

I’m sorry but as a resident of the USA, or Germany, or Sweden I DON’T WANT TO TAKE IN SKETCHY PEOPLE THAT ARE VASTLY MORE LIKELY TO COMMIT CRIMES!!!

How hard is that to understand? I also wouldn’t want to bring in people who are only equally likely to commit crime, but more likely to use welfare. Or to NOT learn the national language. Etc etc etc. There’s no OBLIGATION for the USA or Germany to take in people from shit hole countries if it will lower the “real world” perceived standard of living there! Why in fucks name should they??? Let those people fix their own damn countries. Swedes have no obligation to live a shittier life than they could without immigrants just so some politicians can feel all fuzzy wuzzy about their virtue signaling.

    1. Immigration isn’t inherently bad, but sketchy immigrants are. I’m all for East Asian immigrants because they aren’t layabouts and they are far less likely to commit crimes, but people from a lot of other parts of the world are NOT prime immigrant material. East Asians tend to do BETTER than native born Americans/Europeans basically from the 1st generation onwards on average. The statistics tell a totally different story with people from a lot of other areas, especially Latin America in the USA and the Middle East in Europe. A lot of African and war torn Middle Eastern immigrants have some serious issues. I’m all for letting the educated and non sketchy folks in from Africa and the Middle East too. But not unlimited people with no work skills just because their country is having a rough time right this minute. In other words: Only skim the cream, and fuck the rest of them. I may be an asshole, but at least I’ll admit it!

People anecdotally know this stuff, and they’re tired of being told they’re horrible people for not wanting a bunch of poor, uneducated, more likely to commit crimes, don’t culturally assimilate people moving into their country. This is one of many reasons the “globalism at all costs” crowd is losing ground. I’m all for the better aspects of, but you have to be mindful of the REAL WORLD outcomes of some actions vs how you wish things worked out, and the fact that many people will likely not like the real world outcomes in some cases.

      1. Yep. We should be cherry picking who comes here. Not taking the lowest of the low.

  49. Apparently Reason is suggesting Trump should ignore what the Swedish Security Service is saying (as well as what the US State Department says):

From the Swedish Security Service, which issued this recently based on classified information:
“The threat to Sweden of a terrorist attack has recently changed. Responding to this situation, Anders Danielsson, Director General of the Swedish Security Service, has decided to raise the threat level by one step as regards terrorism targeting Sweden. The terrorist threat level has been raised from low to elevated. ” and “Terrorist-related activities in Sweden are primarily carried out by those who are motivated by Islamist extremism and such activities most often serve to support terrorist offences in conflict zones such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen and Syria.”

So is Reason now fake news?

  50. Interesting that you should publish this article the day before the Wall Street Journal published one acknowledging the seriousness of Sweden’s crime problem and its relationship to Muslim immigrants.

    https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-is-right- swedens-embrace-of-refugees- isnt-working-1487807010

(Sorry that Reason wouldn’t let me post the link properly; delete the spaces then paste into your browser.)

It’s widely known that Sweden has become the rape capital of Europe, and that the government there is systematically under-reporting this and other violent crimes and suppressing information about the nationalities of the perpetrators. In a broad sense, Trump was right: Sweden does have a crime problem, largely due to Muslim immigrants. He may have been (apparently was) wrong about the specifics in his speech the other night, and that documentary you referred to might have been overwrought, but he is correct on the fundamental point. I’m sorry that doesn’t square with your preconceptions.

    1. Exactly. In the war on fake news, that would make this post fake.

  51. An href tag is your magical friend.

  52. I would suggest that, thanks to the mainstream media, that most statistics are tainted to falsely make a false fact. Police and government are downplaying the problem. They aren’t even reporting a lot of rapes, no arrests are made when they are reported. Also, if you’ve been there a few months already, they call you ‘Swedish.’ So writer here has not done much homework.

  53. Oh what’s this — a video made by a Swedish citizen and former refugee about how Donald Trump is right, which even uses facts and statistics and citations? Can’t be!

    https://youtu.be/y1_viPSD-bY

  54. If rape by Chinese residents in Tokyo doubled within one year, the Japanese won’t reason “well but murder rate in America’s Washington DC is 10 times our city and gun violence is way up there, so let’s not do anything”. It’s a pointless baseline or a point of reference for that debate. Whatever Mexicans do in America has no bearing on how other countries might handle violence or crime from their foreign population.

A small, single culture (I assume Sweden is mostly Euro white) nation with low crime rate is admitting more and more people from poorer, radicalized parts of the world where women are held in less esteem. Stats show they commit more crimes than natives. That shouldn’t concern their citizens? And people outside of America generally realze that violence in America is usually found in urban zones with poorer minorities and immigrants. Why would they be in a rush to replicate that scenario?

And let’s not be coy here. When was the last time you heard of ethnic Koreans in Japan rioting in their streets? Or how about Vietnamese workers raping Korean women at an alarming rate? Most of the world filters out people who theoretically burden their nation. The foreigners in these countries are either students, on work visas or jumped through many impossible hoops to obtain citizenship. And “ethnic minorities” of many nations have been part of that culture for decades. They haven’t arrived their 3 years ago as refugees and trying to find their footing in a new world.

  55. You probably should have waited another day to publish this. But, I get it…

  56. I looked at the check for $8628 , I didnt believe that…my… father in law was like actualie taking home money in there spare time on there computar. . there sisters roommate haz done this for under 17 months and just cleard the morgage on there apartment and got a gorgeous Chevrolet Corvette . go to websit========= http://www.net.pro70.com

  57. A 40 year veteran Swedish police officer tells about being prohibited from reporting the ethnicity of violent criminals. Of being threatened by his superiors for speaking out about his experience and being investigated for racism for reporting accurately and truthfully about arrests he’s made.

Perhaps Sweden has more in common with Saudi Arabia than the author is willing to admit. Nothing to see here, move along, move along.

By the way, how are those crime statistics from immediately before the arrival of the Muslim immigrants until now? Would those numbers most accurately reflect the affect of the immigration? Why did the author go back 12 years?

  58. ‘Sweden has been attacked’: Multiple people dead, injured after truck slams into store
    Associated Press Apr 7, 2017

Apparently the Swedes had good reason to be concerned and Reason now qualifies as FAKE news.
