Geological Society of America The foreign ministry of Sweden says its "trying to get clarity" from President Trump after he made comments at a campaign rally about the security situation in that country, which has taken thousands of refugees and where the official crime rates have gone down since 2005. Trump met with candidates for national security advisor at Mar-a-Lago. He also invited the leaders of Trinidad & Tobago and Panama to visit the White House.

Links on Trump's birthday? Unpatriotic!
Hello.
A lefty acquaintance of mine said Democrats are mobilizing big time (bigger than the Tea Party) and they predict taking back power in 2018.
Over/under?
I don't think the available Senate seats are in their favor for the midterms but I could be wrong. Doubt they get the House, either, even though Trump definitely should be handing it to them.
How do you figure?
His early administration has all the makings of a massive fuckup, a la Clinton's first two years that lost him Congress.
IIRC the electoral map is against them in 2018.
Conventional Wisdom is Trump wins Re-Election in 2020, but Conventional wisdom got flipped by Trump, so who knows?
Lefties like to think some anecdotes equates to a big mobilization. Weren't they going to mobilize against Trump this time? The house and senate remained GOP
They like to conflate what progressive political blogs are telling them.
Almost like there is some kind of progressive moment.
All you need is a bunch of black and yellow picket signs, and pink hats to sell to the middle class bohemians.
That'll reach em!
I predict that their political predictions have about the same chance of coming true as their predictions for the last 8 years. So 90/10 it goes in the opposite direction of what they predict. Reality is not their forte.
Taking the White House from Trump in 2020?
This largely depends on who in the world they can come up with to run.
Sanders is the Democratic Ron Paul, his odds of getting through a real primary are non existant, the only reason he did so well against Hillary is because that wasn't a real primary, it was set up as a coronation or someone who was already deeply unpopular within the party and paid no attention whatsoever to the party's progressive wing. Against an actual field of candidates with a mix of positions and support groups he'd only be able to pull support from the hardcore progressive wing and probably not even all of that.
The only other options I can reasonably see are Michelle Obama and Liz Warren. I suspect that if it is Warren there are enough skeletons in her closet to make her win tough, even against Trump. Obama I suspect would beat Trump unless there are skeletons in her closet we didn't hear about when she was 1st lady.
The other major factor in a Trump re-election campaign is that there is no guarantee whatsoever that he'll even win the nomination of his own party. Unless he is somehow running north of a 55% approval rating he will absolutely face strong challenges from within the party and he is unlikely to be facing a clown car of candidates splitting the anti Trump vote plus he won't have a ton of traditional Democrat voters crossing lines to vote for him in the primary
Warren would lose worse than Mondale. The Dems need to find a viable candidate.
Democrats are mobilizing big time (bigger than the Tea Party) and they predict taking back power in 2018.
Are these the same guys who predicted the "Blue Wall" was impenetrable and that they were on the verge of a "permanent majority" in 2016?
Sad!
The foreign ministry of Sweden says its "trying to get clarity" from President Trump ...
Good luck with that.
Many men have tried, but it's like reading the Necromonicon next to the Ark of the Covenant.
"Many men have tried, but it's like reading the Necromonicon next to the Ark of the Covenant."
So, lot's of dead Nazi's then?
He misspoke, he meant last month not last night.
http://www.usatoday.com/story/...../97633012/
That is horrific.
I predict he will still be accused of lying.
He was referring to something someone said on Fox News. For what it's worth, that's what it was, there's no mystery here.
I can't figure out if this is because of Communist China's one child policy or because they have loosened the rules for Chinas one child policy or if China is where the Idiocracy starts?
WARNING to anyone who might find a video labeled """Iron Crotch: Chinese Kung Fu master demonstrates 'ball-breaking stamina'"""" to be disturbing, this is not the video for you.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWsgBqNuVEk
Hey, off the wall question, do you remember a Hong Kong action flick where in one part the master is practicing with a bo staff. He is surrounded by lit candles. He thrusts the staff, and leaves maybe about three inches between the tip of the staff and the flame on a candle. His action extinguishes the flame. He then continues to do so with the rest of the candles. Do you know the name of that movie?
Eight Diagram Pole Fighter by the Shaw Brothers. They also use the same sort of candle trick in The Five Deadly Venoms - the Lizard stands on a wall (parallel to the floor) and extinguishes rows of candles with punches.
Cool, and it is available right now as part of amazon prime.
A science rally in Boston.
The science of racism? Assholery? Wicked retahdedness?
Pittsburgh fan?
Whatever, as long as it gets federal funding.
Right, they aren't politicizing science, while they lobby the government, work in the pay of the government and stand atop their credentials to make loud pronouncements about the ideal laws and regulations they'd like to see passed. Totally not political okay?
A harvard science historian is a scientist
"empirical reality"
"[anthropological] climate change"
Um...
I was just making that point the other day when some California proggie politician was complaining that high-speed rail has become "politicized".
If you want something to be non-political, start a private organization and do it yourself with funds from voluntary donors or investors. Government is synonymous with political.
Winning, in Boston they study winning cause that's all they do
This year's Bruins have other thoughts.
I heard the science study in Boston focused on gas pressure across a range of temperatures and their effect on grip strength and rotational dynamics and trajectory.
Scientists say they've uncovered a hidden continent under New Zealand.
Old Zealand?
Atlantis
I'm surprised that you're the first person to say that. I thought that it was just a scheme by NZ to take over a large swatch of undersea drilling rights.
We need a One Zealand Policy.
Preserve the historical mating grounds of Hobbits and orcs!
If only the hobbits were a willing partner in this historic event.
Mu.
I blame the rains down in Africa.
Hundreds of scientists and their supporters rallied in historic Copley Square on Sunday, demanding that the Trump administration accept empirical reality
empirical reality is a nice band name.
Ok they accept empirical reality. Then what?
Then, on to acceptance of *fantastic* reality!
It become Accepted Science and can never be challenged. Because everyone knows that Science is all about not challenging things.
My favorite thing to do on my Religious Day is spend time reading the Gospels of Contemporary Science, Neil deGrasse Tyson Version, without the UCLA Commentary Council annotations.
Fucking splitters.
And prog reality, which is the same thing, right?
You know what empirical reality never needs? Adjustments of data.
Speaking of empirical reality, exactly how many centimeters have the oceans risen in the past 40 years?
Happy President's (or is it Presidents' ?) Day!
I'm so freakin old that I remember a holiday called Washington's Birthday.
Yeah, but that was before they had to consolidate Washington and Lincoln birthday's (and then include every other President) to make room for the greatest American to ever live, Dr. Martin Luther King. We would not have a country to live in if not for him.
I have a dream.
Some people forget that nightmares are also dreams.
'May all your dreams come true.'
"If we could pull the plug on the oceans, it would be clear to everyone we have mountain chains and a big, high-standing continent above the ocean crust."
Where's Obama now that we really need him?
F-U Fish!
Ed, you got a link to support the claim of Sweden's crime rate going down?
In the link to the story.
Not saying Reuters (who blew the election prediction by 12 points and is often the subject of questionable journalistic neutrality) would ever lie to us, or create fake news, but this line is literally "Studies show..."
I want meat, Ed. MEAT. Fats and Figures.
It - the article - defies what's being reported by journalists and people on the streets.
SHAZAAM
Kevin Drum at Mother Jones looked into it some:
We Should Practice Truth in Statistics, Even When It Hurts
Basically found a mixed bag. Some crimes are up, though overall are stable or slightly down. Crime rates for foreign born individuals are much higher, though, particularly from Africa and the ME. Also says that preliminary statistics for 2016 show a spike in "crimes against persons," including rapes and child abuse.
Kevin Drum does a great job on actually looking at the facts.
Reason should hire him.
And we all know that rape victims never lie! Rape is under reported!
This is the only interesting discussion I found on the matter. The first response has linked sources.
When this:
Comes up in every single discussion on the topic, you know there's a lot of question-dodging going on.
That's a derivative of the tired old argument that "crime will go down if we socialism harder". Crime is more apt to breed poverty than for poverty to breed crime.
Socialism totally reduced crime in Venezuela!
The Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago could require a $1.5 billion endowment, its architects say, three times what was raised for the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.
You know who else was well-endowed?
I'm afraid the myth will prevail.
Richard Shitler?
Mr. Ed?
(Not Krayewski)
Do you know that for a fact? About Krayewski.
Uh yeah....I like horses.
America's private universities?
Milton Berle?
Dr. Manhattan?
A flooded continent under New Zealand? Global warming is worse than I thought. Thanks, Obama!
All those poor polar bears.

*Slap?*
Must be a lot of the commentariat having done the migration to Shameful-La already OR are Federal Employees with the day off under 5 U.S.C. 6103.
Hypocrites.
I knew they were bitchy but not that bitchy!
Days off? what's that?
Climate change is causing California to flood now? It used to cause a permanent drought, but now it's flooding, and that's ok, because reasons.
Climate change is driving the drought which is driving the flooding. SCIENCE! We freaking love science, Mr. President, ban GMOs now, because muh feelz!
Oh, sure, easy to say now, before you've started to grow your third eyeball.
All the better to see the third breasts that will be growing
"Climate change is causing California to flood now? It used to cause a permanent drought, but now it's flooding, and that's ok, because reasons."
When this was questioned in the comments of the Chron e-version, someone actually said that 'if you didn't know that it was causing both, you didn't know any science and must be a denier'.
Yea i saw that...anything that happens = climate change
Scientific American claimed the problems with the Oroville dam were from climate change but everyone knows including them that it was a failure of maintenance. BTW if they had just continued to use the main spillway there would have been no evacuation at all since the the emergency spill way would never had been used.
Has Scientific American done away with the scientific method yet, and announced that they will just vote on the theories henceforth? And once they're settled science, carve them in a block of platinum?
^Meh, slow Monday?

This isn't slow. It's a work stoppage!
needz moar immigrantz!
I was thinking about this weekend. This is what's happening to the mainstream media...they keep pumping b.s. out but no one is listening. Everyone is tuning out. The good writers will be lost in the quagmire that is the media. Reason turning into Salon is not how to spread your message.
I don't think Reason is Salon yet. And please consider this optimistic thought:
Perhaps Reason is infiltrating Lefty-mag outlets in order to inject some (small r) reason into that hellscape. They won't even cover your writings unless you say "Trump, Hitler, and Evil" at least three times before the cock crows.
A sapiens can hope.
Not yet, but it's getting closer. Appealing to lefties/sjw/progs will not work. They are so invested in their ideology that the current events are sweeping them off the cliff. Like lemmings, they jump off with gusto.
"Appealing to lefties/sjw/progs will not work."
I didn't want to believe this, but I've been forced to admit that it's true. If you talk with a leftist for a while, you'll find that they have certain underlying ideas. They believe that making a profit is exploitation of workers and customers. They believe that all income really belongs to the government and that they can redistribute it as they see fit. They believe in the labor theory of value.
Beliefs like these are the reason they're leftists. Until you rid them of these beliefs, they will never see libertarianism as anything but "letting corporations do whatever they want" and "abandoning the poor and needy to die".
If they think reaching out to progressives is a winning strategy they're likely to be disappointed I reckon.
One lesson libertarians won't ever learn. That leftists lie and they don't approach your arguments in good faith. You can't reason someone out of a position they didn't reason themselves into.
Hahahahaha. No.
Moral Bolshevism written about in the NYT.
Something something charging for the bullet:
Lethal injection drugs are scarce. Arizona wants its death row inmates to bring their own.
paging Mr. SugarFree, Mr. SugarFree to the courtesy link fix...
Sugarfree has moved to the glib side. /Darth Bacon
Dammit:
Lethal injection drugs are scarce. Arizona wants its death row inmates to bring their own
and we know they're scientists, because they're wearing lab coats!
you know, I though thst you were joking about this--
and we know they're scientists, because they're wearing lab coats!
but you weren't.
it's a sick, sad world.
Hey guys - how was the jerk?
Someone in SF's city gov't has decided it would be nice to cure Hepatitis C, and so they have a 'plan':
"End Hep C SF is a multi-sector collective impact* initiative that utilizes evidence-based practices, community wisdom, and the creative leveraging of resources to work toward hepatitis C elimination in San Francisco."
https://endhepcsf.org/
That link is yheavy on baffle-gab, but says not one word about who is to pay. The dead-tree version this morning said they 'hope to get the insurance companies to pay for the treatment', ignoring that insurance companies are funded by the insured.
Have they tried clicking the heels of their Ruby Red Slippers together 3 times and wishing that Hepatitis C was cured?
From the amount of argle-bargle in that link, it would not surprised me one bit to find that advanced as "community wisdom" or some such.
Community wisdom is so evidence based.
The map in the linked story about the continent under New Zealand fails to show India as a separate plate India is on a separate plate that slammed into Asia--hence the Himalayas.
http://www.nbcnews.com/news/wo.....nd-n722796
Also, notice that the image manages to show Europe and Asia as two separate plates with a border and two separate colors. Why show some plates and not others?
Is India as much a geological continent as New Zealand?
Did they downplay India's plate just to play up the novelty of a new continent?
Does this mean Reuters is lying?
Does this mean Reuters is hopelessly ignorant?
Does this mean NBC is a purveyor of fake news?
I don't think so, but if Trump had referenced that map, he'd be guilty of all those things.
And if he'd denounced that map as an inaccurate lie, the press would act like he was crazy.
Ken,
You need to write your own articles. I would read them.
There's a new site that lets commenters contribute articles...
Yes, I am beating it into Ken's skull ever so softly. Two site, matter of fact. *looks at my commenter name, encourages anyone to click on it*
Where?
Glibertarians.com
Also a google group called Reasonoids.
You should at least check them out.
Pointing out hypocrisy to an audience that believes hypocrisy is abundant on either side of the axis is spinning the wheels Ken.
How about a "Shultz Score" metric where you measure Reason and other outlets' hypocritical stances/attributions?
You could even abbreviate it too ...nevermind. Don't want to disturb the creepy webcrawlees.
In case anyone missed it, hat tip to trshmnstr
I enjoyed it.
>>>>>>the official crime rates have gone down since 2005.
Nice dodge. What have the crime rates done in the last 2 or so years?
I'd also like to know whether the definition of "official crime" has changed during that time.
#2 Rape capital of the world after South Africa. Officially nothing to see here.
The Sacramento Kings traded DeMarcus Cousins to New Orleans
Pelicans actually made a competent and solid move? We're not in some alternate dimension, right?
Seems like the Kings got a pretty good haul. Hield is going to be a scorer, and they get a first round pick, and Evans ain't bad.
Apparently President Trump may have been referring to a Tucker Carlson special that aired earlier detailing how Sweden took in 160,000 asylum seekers (of which about 500 found jobs) and has seen a sharp uptick in sexual assaults in their country.

"Liberals pretended not to understand Trump's point,"
I'm not the first to note how literal they get about Trump's remarks.
