Finally: The Case Against Hamilton
The hit Broadway musical was all that was wrong with 2016, and will likely be wrong with 2017, too.
I don't think there's a slight bit of hyperbole or exaggeration involved when I say that Hamilton, the awful musical that millionaire New Yorkers are required by law to throw away thousands watching, represents everything that was wrong with America in 2016. Allow me to make the case.
First, there's the music. I'm admittedly not much of a hip-hop aficionado, but I know shit from Shinola. From my perspective the art form has more or less been going downhill since Strictly Business (the EPMD record, not the Tommy Davidson vehicle), but there have been some highlights worth mentioning, mostly thanks to Ice Cube and an army of Wu bangers.
The point I'm trying to make is that, even to untrained ears such as mine, Hamilton is particularly bad. On first take, I thought it sounded a bit like a University of Iowa freshman—the kind who only listens to "real hip-hop"—attempting his first mixtape. One of my Twitter followers corrected me, however. It's closer to a Braintree elementary school making a rap song for parents' night. The latter description hints not merely at the simple, formulaic quality of the material, but also the cloying, bourgeois quality of it all. From the reference to "ten-dollar Founding Father without a father" to "when the British taxed our tea we got frisky," the whole affair sounds more like something made by precocious children than a professional composer.
We have Lin-Manuel Miranda to blame for this cultural atrocity, a scion of a psychologist and an advisor to New York mayor Ed Koch, who attended the same elementary and high school as Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. Sure, he got bullied by Immortal Technique in school, but how much street cred is that really worth? After this he attended Wesleyan University, a top-10-ranked school that costs $65,000 a year, according to Forbes, before making his mark writing jingles for noted prostitute-enthusiast Eliot Spitzer's 2006 campaign. The original version of Hamilton debuted at a Vassar College workshop. All this is, of course, an attempt to firmly establish Miranda's street cred, which is unassailable.
Some are irritated about the people who aren't white playing white people, but I'm not. The whole production plays so fast and loose with the truth that it's hard to pick any particular piece to criticize, there's a reality correlation approximating that of the Weekly World News. At the top of the list, though, has to be casting Alexander Hamilton as some sort of proto-multicultural progressive. That's either stupidity or mendacity, take your pick. Hamilton was, if anything, the most aristocratic of the Founding Fathers, the closest thing to a Colonial Tory. You know that electoral college you've been gnashing your teeth over for the last couple months? Guess whose idea that was?
Of course, shit music and feels-over-reals weren't the whole problem with America in 2016—and they aren't the biggest deal facing us in 2017, either. No, the worst thing about this present moment in time is the smugness with which zillionaires and their sycophants on the coasts piss all over anyone who does actual work for a living.
That's not just one of the main reasons that Trump won the election. That attitude makes for garbage art.
Historically speaking, you've got high art and folk art, each with their own set of aesthetic guidelines and measuring sticks. What's historically anomalous is commercial art—art that exists not due to the patronage of cultured elites or through the unrewarded efforts of the hoi polloi. It's art that exists to make money.
Art that exists to make money isn't a bad thing. A lot of the best music of the 20th century was commercial art. The Beatles are probably one of a handful of things anyone will remember about the 20th century in 500 years, a stunning example of commercial art as inspired genius. What's irritating, though, is when well-connected millionaires make art for the sake of signaling their moral superiority over the masses on the basis of their correct beliefs. Hamilton has become a sort of avatar of the Lena Dunham Democratic Party against the rest of the world, perhaps best displayed by the cast lecturing Vice President Elect Mike Pence (the closest thing to a Wal-Mart greeter they'll ever be in the same room as) about tolerance.
Tickets for Hamilton start between $179 and $199, with high-end tickets going for $849. Once they hit the secondary market (A.K.A. scalpers) you're looking at between $650 and $1500 on Stubhub. Is this because it's the best musical on Broadway? Or is it because Hamilton is this season's most fashionable way to signal liberal respectability and status among the One Percenters?
This isn't speaking truth to power. This is power telling the rest of us what truth is. There's nary a hint of self-awareness as those only vaguely aware of poverty and toil through a sociology textbook deign to lecture us little people about America's 'real values.' That's what's wrong with America in the current year.
The election of Donald Trump and the leave vote in the United Kingdom aren't just political decisions. They're a cultural revolt against the pomposity of upper-crust liberals who don't have to live with the consequences of their own values. Hamilton is where the modern day Marie Antoinettes tell unemployed forklift drivers to eat cake.
Off in the distance, the sans cullotes are sharpening the guillotine. The aloof nobles catching the latest performance of Hamilton have no idea they're about to be cast—much against their will—in a bit part in Les Miserables.

Anti-Hamilton screeds. Was there a yokel coup d'etat at Reason HQ?
They read the signs of the times. And the sound of silence - the sound of contributors' wallets snapping shut.
It's time for a new, improved Reason. With cooler facial hair (see my links below).
Start working at home with Google! It's by-far the best job I've had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this - 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link,
go? to tech tab for work detail,,,,,,, http://www.foxnews20.com
I hope so.
I hope so!
More of this, less Shikha, Chapman, and Richman please!!!
May as well add Sudeman to the list while we're at it. Plus a promise that Robbie gets a firm cuff to the back of the head every time he writes "too be sure."
Will that make enough room for Richman, you know, just so we will never forget.
I was a bit surprised too. I also don't recognize the author. Could just be I don't ever pay attention to who writes articles though. It'll be interesting to get something besides people trying to appeal to progs though.
Its Nicholas Pellegi's nom de plume
the editors had to excise about 30 "fugghedaboutits" and "this fuckin' guy?" before publication
Was there a yokel coup d'etat at Reason HQ?
The Ancien regime revolted when the commentariat started eating their sans cullotes with the wrong forklift .
Anti-Hamilton screeds. Was there a yokel coup d'etat at Reason HQ?
Best time for a coup is on Saturday when the Cosmotarians are sleeping in from their proggie hangovers. Good catch.
Sounds like somebody is butthurt.
Your hysterical tears over how Reason is making America great again are delicious.
@khm001
What the fuck are you talking about?
Liked the article, didn't like couching the conversation in terms of wealth and class. That's their deal, not mine.
Grammar Nazi, but "THE hoi polloi"?
Nobody says it using "hoi" as an article, the same as with words like algebra and algorithm. "The algorithm is fast" is ungrammatical according to your logic. Bunk.
My neigbour recently bought a new yellow Toyota Yaris by working part-time from a computer. find out here?

"My neigbour recently bought a new yellow Toyota Yaris"
Why? Is your neighbor a 5 year old girl?
Your still not fooling me Putin!
I refuse to join your part time computer gang which stole the election from the greatest woman on Earth!!!!
Oh? And what if this small pile of large-denominated rubles should happen to be pushed across table? How then would affect your opinion?
Well.....Do you have a good dental plan?
Dental plans you, comrade.
Lisa needs braces.
To think that Putinbots actually understand the difference between your and you're.
That puts you one up on Podesta
Nicholas Pell - new guy! I hope he gets at least as much exposure at Reason as, say, Chapman or Dalmia.
I had to Google him to get a decent profile and photo - here you go.
And on his Twitter feed, he says he may some some guy who called him a member of the alt right.
says he may *sue* some guy. Or some paper.
On his Twitter feed, when asked about Trump's tax returns he can't resist the opportunity to say he doesn't even think they should exist because taxation is theft
In his LA weekly archive, he has a defense of Ted Nugent, plus an article where he makes the case that left-wing bands are for nerds. I disagree with some of his other takes, but I appreciate the asshole demeanor he has going on
I am completely for more of this guy shredding left-wing culture. Make it happen Reason
You sound like a closed-minded idiot.
Thanks
And you sound like wind blowing through a hollow log.
That sounds kinky.
Bet that to you almost everything sounds kinky.
Regardless of that you think of those specific takes, it shows he has balls, which is more than you can save for Chapman or Soave.
I don't even know how much I endorse those takes; "Stranglehold" is great but still doesn't balance out Ted Nugent in my eyes. I'll even admit I'm often on the cosmotarian side of things, so his Twitter was hit-or-miss as I scrolled through. But I'm entertained by the guy, and I'll enjoy a hot take I disagree with purely for the left-wing outrage that results
Ted is a nice guy and I wouldn't mind hanging out with him. There is, however, no defending Ted's music. It just sucks.
Yeah I grew up in S.E. MI in the 70s. Watchin Ted play that big ES175 with hair down to his ass was quintessential Motor City madness. As I recall. Dunno. Mescaline is a helluva drug. But "my face is a Maserati, it's a Maserati". Can you write timeless lyrics like that? Can you take a 20 second solo and transform it into a half hour self indulgent wall of noise? Didn't think so smartass.
Just look at that mustache!
It must take his orphan workers an hour to make it look like that.
All he needs is a monocle.
We could use "The 'Stache" to go with "The Hair". Someone let "The Jacket" know of our approval.
I feel obligated to ask what John Frank Stossel ever did to you?
"When not irritating LA Weekly readers with his contrarian musical opinions, he enjoys professional wrestling, Archie Comics, lifting heavy shit, drinking himself into a coma and getting job-stopping tattoos. His biggest writing influence is Rick Rude, he's never read Lester Bangs and he thinks his mustache is fucking tits."
OH SNAP
Ooh, this is interesting -
What I Learned Being the Most Hated Man in Ireland
An expat, an angry mob and a whole lotta cold, hard truth.
By Nicholas Pell
Move over, Oliver Cromwell!
The guy is basically a more-serious and perhaps more-libertarian Milo.
"I'm not sure the average Irishman would understand what happened even if I explained it to them. It's not even that it's "over their heads" or something. It's more like you'd be explaining it to them in Swahili."
This. When I'm hanging out with people and I reference safe-spaces or microagressions or the latest social media outrage, most people have no idea what the hell I'm taking about. I think all of his points were spot on
Yeah, I was surprised to see that he was from Ireland, because I thought the drunken potato eaters* had gone full derptard based on articles I had read. Seemed like it would be a hostile environment for someone who thinks, and I guess it is. *I am a drunken potato eater
I think he's an American living in Ireland.
Liking this guy better all the time.
Oof. I like this guy.
Who said anything about speaking truth to power? It's a frickin' Broadway show. What's with you people?
The Liberal Establishment has been having micrograms about HAMILTON all year, culminating in the way they referred to the "Bully the electors into pissing all over the Electoral College that the real Alexander Hamilton helped create" campaign as being about 'Hamilton Electors'. When it first pinged on my cultural radar, I wondered if it was some sort of 21st Century 1776 The Musical. The I heard that it was based in Rap and lost all interest. My personal feeling about Rap is that it basically is recycling what Gwendolyn Brooks said in WE REAL COOL, but to whatever extent it has any artistic validity, it is about the late 20th and early 21st century urban Black experience, and using it to blovate about early American politics via Broadway is like writing about Woodstock in Latin; it could be done, but will necessarily be an exercise in pseudo-intellectual mental masturbation.
My personal hope is that HAMILTON quickly gets stuffed down the same memory hole as FIORELLO! and OF THEE I SING, and long forgotten while revivals of 1776 and THE MUSIC MAN still draw crowds.
I have not seen Hamilton and 99.99% sure that I never will, so I will let others bash the specifics of this musical.
One thing I do find typical of SJW "art" is that none of the racial tones can be twisted for other works and receive the lefty praise this musical does.
A white man playing MLK? A white woman playing Harriet Tubman? A latina playing Obama? There would be riots in the streets!
Hip Hop is to music what Professional Wrestling is to sport.
That is all.
I take exception to your slur against "Of Thee I Sing." I wouldn't sit through "Hamilton" on a bet, but a few months ago, I saw a concert revival of "Of Thee I Sing" by Lyric Stage in Irving, Texas, with full orchestra and the original Gershwin score. Not only was the music incredible, but the Kaufman and Hart book was still hilarious. You'd be surprised how many of the political jokes seemed absolutely timely two weeks before Election Day 2016. It's about a presidential campaign based on "love" instead of issues (one consultant tells an aide who asks the candidate's position on an important issue, "We're trying to appeal to the voters' hearts, not their brains!") Hillary never did find the perfect campaign slogan, and that could have been it.
All you say may be true, but almost nobody remembers OF THEE I SING. Despote a recival or two, FIORELLO! Is also largely forgotten (though it won a prize or two at the time). Aficionados of musical theatre will remember good-but-not-classic shows long after the world has gone haring off after The Latest Thing. And The Latest thing grows stale damn fast.
This seems like a stretch
A li'l bit.
I get that it's satisfying to give a big "fuck you" to people who think they are better than you, but I'd like to see libertarians aspire to something more. Like appreciating the cultural merits of both Hamilton and [insert stereotypical working class entertainment here]. And it's not that libertarians need to like both, just that maybe we can better appreciate that "cultural markets" aren't zero sum and will cater to all types - which is pretty awesome.
As it stands this is just the flip side of Meryl Streep's rant.
This article is an appreciation of the cultural merits of Hamilton.
I guess that went over my head
Suthenboy nailed it there.
BUT IT'S MY KIND OF RANT!
Hire this man!
Indeed. It's a lot of the same annoying personal-is-political grouching we usually denounce.
Maybe people go to see Hamilton because they heard it's great. Maybe they like it and call it great because they're impressed by the music, direction, and story. Maybe we don't need to judge a piece of work politically, even if some of its boosters have embraced it for political reasons. And I don't even understand why the show's high ticket price - driven by, y'know, consumer demand - is indicative of the show's attitude toward the hoi polloi. Was Miranda supposed to produce this as a TV movie for ABC instead?
You're kidding yourself if you think this musical isn't intentionally political. The whole message of the piece is psuedo artistic progressive preaching.
All of my friends here in LA bragged about its message. Granted, my location pretty much guarantees the majority of friends here will think that (I work in entertainment, which makes it even worse).
Yes, it's a musical, an entertainment. That in no way contradicts the smug ideology of the message. One can also criticize the richness of a musical geared toward a wealthy audience talking down to common folk while fully supporting the free market that created price discovery.
Exactly what is the smug ideology this musical is preaching? What lines specifically don't you like? And what Broadway musical isn't geared toward a wealthy audience; who other than those with disposable income go to Broadway musicals? This is probably one show that has people outside the wealthy art patrons clamoring to go. It's a shame that ticket prices make it cost prohibitive for most people, but that is free market - are you really going to criticize him for making money? And how is it talking down to common folk? If anything, being put in a hip hop form with black actors, it is using a common folk medium to speak to the wealthy elite. And if there is any politicizing, that is his right as a creator - he can use his medium to spread a message if he wants - I sure hope this isn't a case of a libertarian trying to shut someone down from stating their beliefs because they don't agree with them. Are you saying that if you created something that gave you a broad platform for your political beliefs you WOULDN'T use it? As an INDIVIDUAL you can take from it whatever you want and leave the rest behind.
It's a lot of the same annoying personal-is-political grouching we usually denounce.
I'm not particularly buying that. It might have held water barring the entire Pence controversy. But, that happened. The cast and creators of the play opted to politicize it.
So you're criticizing them for taking the time they happened to have a platform and chose to make an appeal stating their beliefs to someone of actual influence, and because they did, that taints the entirety of the musical itself? That seems kind of narrow. And isn't that one of the beautiful things about America - that we have an opportunity to rise up, make a success of ourselves, and speak our minds? Whether or not you agree with their politics, the cast performed for Pence for 3 hours and wanted 3 minutes. It's their right to do that, as much as it's his right to walk out.
I listen almost exclusively to classical music and love Wagnerian opera. I never watch football or any sport or sitcoms. I hate Hamilton too.
I think many of us fine arts lovers hate Hamilton for the same reason we hate Jackson Pollock.
Jackson Pollock isn't worth hating. Hate the nitwit Art Critics who made him possible.
Also, if you haven't yet, read Tom Wolf's THE PAINTED WORK. Hysterical.
"The Painted WORD". /quibble
Agree that it's a fine expose of the true nature of Modern Art markets: investors>collectors>critics>art theorists>the artists themselves. It's not really an ourobouros, but the relationships of the participants and the quality/nature of the product makes The Human Centipede an apt model.
Anyone who's read Painted Word has surely read "From Bahaus to Our House", which is a similar Wolfe takedown of the fraud that is Modern Architecture (though the dynamic is different, of course). If you haven't, you should. Both are short, savage, spot-on dissections of scams dressing themselves up with academic and economic legitimacy.
Architecture is arguably the worse scam, not morally, but in the fact that people have to LIVE with the misguided results of non-patronage-based, theory-driven architecture. As opposed to the private nature of the "free exchange for agreed upon value" that occurs when a billionaire spends a million for a blank canvas and an art critic is well-paid to tell him it's great art, and, more importantly, a great investment. (Hell, it may well be, whatever its artistic merit.)
Anyway, it's hard to resist the suspicion that the same pervasive influences of critical theory, progtard identity politics and elitist virtue-signalling are also at work in the musical theater field.
You know who else liked Wagner?
Wagner?
Worse than a stretch, factually inaccurate:
Not from his background, which was an orphan who immigrated to NY as a teenager.
But if you're talking about his design for the country, then it is correct. Hamilton proposed electing Presidents and Senators for life. He really favored a very strong central government - as did Madison, surprisingly. But Madison wanted checks and balances among the government, Hamilton not so much.
Who cares about its artistic merits - people's tastes are in their mouths. The most offensive thing is the celebration of the forced 'diversity'. They even advertised for non-white actors/singers!
They even advertised explicitly for non-white actors/singers!
Cultural Appropriation !!!!!
Blame racism.
If the director doesn't explicitly ask for/specify non-white performers, then what they get in the casting call will be disproportionately white. Sad but true.
I'm not sure I understand - you are criticizing him for casting non-whites? Can't he choose to cast whomever he wants? Isn't that his right? Let him do his thing - it doesn't infringe on your rights for him to do that, does it? Are you mad about that because you were you denied a role in the cast because you are white? Because you could have played King George III or General Lee.....they were white.
BOOM.... HEADSHOT

This just keeps getting better: http://www.dailytelegraph.com......om=htc_rss
But without artists like U2 to educate us, where will we get profound lyrics like
You know you're chewing bubblegum
You know what that is
But you still want some
You just can't get enough
Of that lovie dovie stuff
"No rush, Mr Edge. Please take as long as you need. Or longer. Delete U2's entire back catalogue if necessary. Quit the industry."
Go raise free range carrots somewhere.
A little red meat for the commentariat. Nice. More of this guy.
I got the feeling that people are enthusiastic about Hamilton because they feel like it's defiling the temple of American idealism the way the Red Guard used to defile Buddhist temples during the Cultural Revolution.
The pretense of destroying the ideals of the patriotic opposition is exciting to them.
Jesus Christ Superstar had the same kind of appeal in the early 1970s. By claiming sacred source material and profaning it with your own provocations, people will flock to it just for that reason.
Jesus Christ Superstar played with the Jesus Freak hippie movement of the time, and it's central message was actually quite Christian--but after you've had Mary singing "I Don't Know How to Love Him" or lines by the disciple chorus like:
Always hoped that I'd be an apostle
Knew that I would make it if I tried
Then when we retire we can write the gospels
So they'll still talk about us when we've died
. . . what square can see past that for the central message?
Hamilton seems to push the same buttons. If Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice had been Americans instead of British, they might have tweaked these American revolutionary noses a long time ago.
Very insightful, Ken.
Yes, JC Superstar and Hamilton epitomize the hip culture of the day. BFD.
This is the core point: "By claiming sacred source material and profaning it with your own provocations, people will flock to it just for that reason."
"Sacred/profane" may be too strong for some, but he pointed out something important: that it's a capturing/reframing of the past, for political/ideological purposes. That is not uncommon, including outside of the the entertainment industry. One could say that the Christian adoption of various pagan practices (e.g. Christmas trees) was a similar move.
Yes. HAMILTON and JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR both epitomize the kind of hip, trendy entertainment that goes stale faster than a cake left out in the Arizona sun.
Weber had a talent for writing music that was hummable, at least.
"Exhibit A: the fact that 'Hamilton' is a Broadway musical featuring rap songs about Alexander Hamilton."

I'm liking this Nicolas Pell guy. More please.
Here is the Irish Times article that got him criticized in Ireland.
And an article he wrote for Cracked - 6 Things You Learn Getting Paid To Troll People Online.
Readers of the Irish Times react to Pell's alt right article
It seems that the Irish are anti-Nazi now. Better late than never, I suppose.
Note their re-definition of Nazi.
Reading the speeches of actual Nazi's without attribution you could probably get a majority of those idiots nodding their heads in agreement.
*A great version of spot the not would mix up quotes from Mein Kampf with prominent modern progressives.
Is this nationalist passage written by Hamilton, or another guy whose name begins with H?
"What is a Confederacy?
"By a Confederacy we mean a union of sovereign states which of their own free will and in virtue of their sovereignty come together and create a collective unit, ceding to that unit as much of their own sovereign rights as will render the existence of the union possible and will guarantee it.
"But the theoretical formula is not wholly put into practice by any confederacy that exists today. And least of all by the American Union, where it is impossible to speak of original sovereignty in regard to the majority of the states. Many of them were not included in the federal complex until long after it had been established. The states that make up the American Union are mostly in the nature of territories, more or less, formed for technical administrative purposes, their boundaries having in many cases been fixed in the mapping office. Originally these states did not and could not possess sovereign rights of their own. Because it was the Union that created most of the so-called states. Therefore the sovereign rights, often very comprehensive, which were left, or rather granted, to the various territories correspond not only to the whole character of the Confederation but also to its vast space, which is equivalent to the size of a Continent. Consequently, in speaking of the United States of America one must not consider them as sovereign states but as enjoying rights or, better perhaps, autarchic powers, granted to them and guaranteed by the Constitution. "
At one time, considering some of H's policies and philosophy I thought him my least favorite FF. By least favorite I mean I would have shot him too. Then I looked into his death a bit out of curiosity. It seems he considered Burr so injurious to the country that he wanted the man gone but never had any intention of shooting him as that would have destroyed his own reputation. His goal was to waste his shot, not an uncommon practice, but when he did Burr mistakenly thought Hamilton had merely missed and so shot him. This act did destroy Burr's political career, maybe not as Hamilton intended, but it was effective.
He was an honorable man with some serious stones.
Bullshit. You don't throw a shot away by shooting in your opponent's direction. If Hamilton had won that duel, he would have immediately thrown the letter claiming his intent in the fire. That letter was insurance on his memory...a lie.
Harry?
I give up.
That was great. Reason is a fool if they don't snag this guy.
Omg, this guy. This guy is like the world's perfect asshole. Go him.
I enjoyed the Cracked article, though that website has become rather atrocious.
damn, somebody call the BURN ward

You seem to treat the various individuals that make up Reason as if they were a single entity.
It's all yokels vs cosmos, bro.
Also, you don't seem to really know what a cosmotarian is.
I do - a cosomtarian is the opposite of a yokeltarian.
Pssst....Ken.
He is being funny.
Forget it, he's rolling.
Expecting Ken to pick up on humor?
I know, but I can't help but try sometimes.
Yeah, in the future, try to remember that.
Remember that when Crusty Juggler is talking about cosmotarians, he knows what he's talking about, and when he talks about Reason staff as if they were a single entity who agree on everything, he's just joking.
He may have been calling out someone to make fun of them, but it wasn't supposed to be funny.
Incidentally, on the the Lemony Snicket front, Neil Patrick Harris isn't as good as Jim Carrey was and the new Violet isn't as good as Emily Browning.
Neil Patrick Harris is both the star and producer. I doubt anyone would have cast him for this--so he had to be the producer if he wanted the role, I guess. Incidentally, I don't remember Harris ever being really good in anything.
Also, the narrator is too involved. If they cut his appearances and lines in half, it would make it better.
I only know NPH from Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog. Loved it back when I saw it, don't know if it aged well.
The genius of NPH.
It was a fun flick.
But not because of NPH.
Or did he get his producer credit because he's a big name and the big name always gets producer credit? I dunno what his real role is in getting the thing made. On "Today" he sounded more like an actor who got the role of a villain and was out flogging his show for the media. I don't recall any language like 'we decided'... it was more like "when I got the role". At least that is the impression I have days later.
I tried to watch it with the younger two kids... 6 and 4. They were bored. Too much talking and exposition in the first episode. We turned it off halfway through.
I thought it was pretty good though... as far as we got. Patrick Warburton is always great. Casting him as Rod Serling is an interesting move, and he pulls it off. Even if I can only see him as a comedic actor. He kind of gives the whole thing a tongue in cheek aspect, merely by his existence.
There's nothing quite so pleasing as the sound of presumptions being burst.
More please.
So a member of today's 'elite
Writes a play about a guy who wanted to put the 19th century "elite' in charge of the country
But hires black actors who rap the words to make it sound like its from the streets
And today's "elite" spend lots of money for tickets and praise it in every part of the MSM that they own.
I mean, it sounds less cutting-edge when you describe it like that.
To the left everyone else is a statistic. The only way to "fix" statistics is to trample the rights of individuals. Of course the statistics never get fixed for what to most of us are obvious reasons, only the trampling of rights portion comes to fruition.
Very good.
The Beatles are probably one of a handful of things anyone will remember about the 20th century in 500 years
Beatles songs are the William Shakespeare plays of the 20th century!!!!!! Can we go ahead and shoehorn Wings in with that?
Can we go ahead and shoehorn Wings in with that?

What will be remembered of the 20th Century in 500 years? My guesses:
The Beatles

Neil Armstrong
The Wright Brothers
(Half of that list are from the Buckeye state, btw)
What will be remembered of the 20th Century in 2000 years:
Neil Armstrong
What will be remembered of earth in 5000 years:
Neil Armstrong
Um...no.
Albert Einstein
Glaring omission on my part.

The list is long. The 20th really was an amazing century.
Those things won't be remembered though. They're concepts and part of a progression of tech.
And Wasn't wastewater plumbing created way before the 20th century?
Yes but not that widespread. It really came into its own in the 20th. That and refrigeration increased life expectancy and quality of life more than anything else in history.
Yes, the Romans had it 2000 years ago.

I like Wings plenty, but that ones not a classic...
Like honey from the lips of an angel. Timeless poetic classic.
And "Mull of Kintyre."
Nicholas Pell. Reason noob.
I would like to see moar, por favor.

Libertarians Against Subjective Value.
I enjoy polemics and think Reason could use more of them, but this one's a bit hysterical.
I think "required by law" is a joke.
Is this a joke?
I don't think Eddie is ever funny.
(to clarify, I wasn't pointing to the "required by law" joke; the hysterical description refers to the general thrust of the piece, which is based a whole lot on the "feels-over-reals" and tribalism that Pell mocks)
My dogs love to eat cat shit. How's that for subjective value?
*My grandaddy had no love for lap dogs. Whenever he would see one licking someone's face he would say "You know what they been eatin' when they've been out where they can get it."
While I had no doubt it's kitsch, I had always assumed the problem was that instead of affirming American values of peace, prosperity, freedom and tolerance, it actually tried to paint our founders as proto-socialists. Ugh now don't make me watch it.
Some of them were. Ben Franklin and Thomas Paine were in a few ways.
Keep this man Reason. He almost makes me want to treat the Irish like they're people or something.
Oh thank god, he's not actually Irish. My prejudice can remain intact.
He just chooses to live and cavort with them. Which is worse?

Try perusing the comments.
I'm not going to defend Hamilton; I find all live theater grating. But Trump wasn't elected as a response to liberal nonsense, he was elected as a response to a parody of liberal nonsense that he sold to those "real people" the author of this piece is so fond of, who are every bit as out of touch as he claims their opposites are.
That, and the worries of the small-minded about that dusky-hued gentleman passing then on the street. But by all means, let's ignore the fear of the Other and blame Trump on Broadway.
Liberal nonsense is everywhere. The idea that Trump had to parody it or that he even could if he wanted to given the stranglehold liberals have on the popular culture is perhaps one of the most delusional things I have ever read.
True.
If you read the article more carefully, you'll note he's not making any sweeping claims about 'what got Trump elected', and mostly just sticking with "why he thinks Hamilton is fucking lame"
When this has become the most well-known advocate of progressivism and social justice on the internet, you'd better believe 'liberal nonsense' had a massive influence on the election. Twitter flip-outs alone are exposing the average person to the absolute insanity of these folks, and people are responding by distancing themselves accordingly. The media mass-produced articles on how you were sexist scum if you didn't hold Clinton up as some wonderful public servant. Trump was elected are a variety of reasons, but in terms of culture it was because people are generally sick of left wing cultural domination, sick of the lies and being called racists, sexists, etc. and are willing to back anyone who is seen as a challenge to it.
Hear, hear!
Progressivism jumped the shark, fell in the water and was then eaten alive by the shark.
You have to be a fool to not believe it had some impact.
"...wonderful public servant"
At least the LP candidate wasn't sexist scum. His virtue signalling really saved his campaign and won liberals over.
Seconding this. I'm not a fan of Trump, particularly on a day when my head is clear, but it's really hard to remember that when I have to interact with my colleagues who are ENTIRELY comprised of Trigglypuffs. Imagine interacting with anywhere from 10-50 shrieking, hysterical doomsayers on a daily basis?it doesn't take long before you are willing to consider anything that gets you away from them.
You just described my life.
When this has become the most well-known advocate of progressivism and social justice on the internet
[CITATION NEEDED - I'd never seen that clip before you posted it]
One cannot parody the modern progressive. And stop using that word 'liberal'. The modern progressive is the opposite of liberal.
So much this.
They are authoritarians. We are liberals. Shit, conservatives are far more liberal than these asshats.
Which is why I prefer Republicans over Democrats in our current duopoly, even if I am willing to waste my vote on creepy-tongue-guy.
You can't parody liberal nonsense. It's beyond parody. 2016 was the year that parody died.
Your comment really made me think, and I feel like you're right. In my little town we've lost several major employers and there has been a significant influx of black folks from the city and Hispanic folks, many of whom seem to be migrant workers. It has led to a lot of tension and there is a heavy feeling in the air for a lot of us, newcomers and longtime residents alike.
After reading your comment I think I've got renewed inspiration for ideas to help in my own personal sphere here in fly-over country: beginning this evening I'm going to start letting all the neighbors know that I am now looking to hire all the black and Hispanic people in town to perform a musical show for my viewing pleasure. And I want lots of singing and dancing. Let the healing begin.
That, and the worries of the small-minded about that dusky-hued gentleman passing then on the street.
I didn't vote for Trump. But I know a lot of people (most of my family) who did. And not one of them voted for him because they were afraid of that "dusky-hued gentleman". But I will venture that they voted for him, in part, because a lot of assholes equated their desire for a nice, happy, middle-class life with racism or sexism or Islamophobia. They want that nice, happy, middle-class life, Trump promised them that and being able to stick their finger in the eye of the assholes who told them they were "deplorable" for wanting that was a really big bonus.
I don't remember Trump selling anything other than Trump. And using the lamest of sales pitches.... "It's gonna be great!" "It'll be Huuuuuuuge!" "It's fantastic!" "I'm a winner!" "I'm the best!"
And then denigrating his detractors with vitriol. Simplistic vitriol, elementary school vitriol. But vitriol, nonetheless.
The latter is what I think people responded to. No republican in their lifetimes has dared to fight back. Every candidate since Reagan has engaged the Democrat attack machine like a porcupine making love. Trump treats even the slightest insult as if it were Armageddon. And his attacks usually turn personal immediately. The "Trump is a racist" meme is almost entirely based on his unwillingness to cower in the corner when called a racist - which has been the go-to move for Republican candidates for decades.
Joe Sixpack likes this. Joe Sixpack wants his leader to have a spine. And apparently Joe Sixpack doesn't really care if his leaders are coherent or have any identifiable political philosophy. At this moment in history, he just wants his leaders to have some backbone.
And Trump has plenty of backbone. It might actually just be narcissism masquerading as backbone, but at least he had something back there giving him some fight.
Yup. Nothing proves your comment true more than the boomeranging of pussy gate. He was finished when that tape came out. Then in the next debate he went all in; instead of cowering, he went into attack mode. The "You'll be in jail" line was a giant middle finger to the clintons and the prog media machine.
Narcissism turns out to be the killer app when fighting those for whom the personal is political.
Anybody who didn't vote for a warmongering tool of Wall Street bankers who laughs about a man being sodomized and murdered, brags about putting people out of work, and calls the deaths of thousands of civilians "smart power" is obviously overwhelmed by fear of dusky-hued gentlemen passing them of the street. But liberal nonsense doesn't exist. Only a parody thereof. All about racism every time.
The last play I saw was Phantom of the Opera . I've seen it twice. I'm good.
MUSICALS ARENT "PLAYS"
Is 'Jelly's Last Jam' with Gregory Hines still playing?
/grin.
Hamilton is a clever use of the liberal brand. it is a way for stupid people with no taste to signal that they are smart and have taste. It doesn't matter that it is crap. The quality of the art is not the point. It is the quality of the virtue signal that counts.
"The election of Donald Trump and the leave vote in the United Kingdom aren't just political decisions.
The aloof nobles catching the latest performance of Hamilton have no idea they're about to be cast?much against their will?in a bit part in Les Miserables."
Fucken-A. Fucken. A.
Author was scathing in his somewhat subjective, and admittedly untrained, artistic assessment. Though broad artistic license is appropriate in casting the best "talent" for each part, and I saw no fault, the Reason critic could have easily brought up two disturbing facts about casting procedures. The casting procedures were initially in gross violation of norms and law when they specified only non-whites need try-out. That illegal condition was quickly removed! Secondly, union procedures automatically disqualify any illegal immigrant from getting a part, but ironically given the inclusive message of the production, in effect block even legal immigrants (eg on work visas) from getting a part. Pence could have, had he not understood concept of decorum and civility and if he were given a microphone, very failrly dressed cast down for their hypocrisy. Disclosure, I did see it and somewhat enjoyed it. I was not called out and lectured by cast!
'untrained'?
I'm not sure if having graduated from Berklee makes anyone a more-valid critic of shitty-rap musicals.
"I was not called out and lectured by cast!"
Why would you be?
Here is how you judge the merits of the play; how much of an effect has it had on the wider culture? A fair amount but its effect relates entirely to people claiming to like it and not because of any effect the actual musical has had.
For example, everyone knows the song Old Man River and maybe a 1/4 of them could tell you it is from Showboat. Hamilton is just the opposite. Everyone knows about Hamilton but no one could name a single song in it, including I bet most of the people who saw it and proudly display a never listened to copy of the soundtrack in their home.
I *was* going to make a joke about music from Hamilton...Ontario but they're not giving me a whole lot to work with.
Most of the Band were from Ontario. So, Songs from Big Pink, is music from Hamilton and unlike this crap actually good.
Ontario...not Tiger-Cats town. Hey, can anyone tell me what the fuck a Tiger-Cat is?
Play along John. /slap!
It is a creature that is not smart enough or mobile enough to escape from Hamilton.
Isn't Triumph from Hamilton?
*Googles* Nope, Mississauga. Instead they've got...The Killjoys. And Warpig. Up your game, Hamilton.
Here is how you judge the merits of the play; how much of an effect has it had on the wider culture? money does it make?
That is how you judge its financial merits. How much money it makes is not the measure of its artistic merits. It is quite possible to make a lot of money from bad art. In fact, Andrew Lloyd Weber and Beyonce, just to give to relevant and good examples, have made huge fortunes doing so.
Young Marble Giants!
Back in the day I was introduced to an old Italian construction worker at a pizza joint as a "writer".
The old man looked at me with a subtle impressed look and asked stoically in Italian, 'do you make money with that?'
My response was a meek, 'I'll have the pizza with fiori di latte and bresaola" as I lowered my head.
I had an aunt who always called herself a poet.
My father, a fellow asshole, finally put a stop to that when he said, "have you ever been published? No? Then you're not a poet. You're a fucking clerk at an insurance company."
Shit. I just remembered that she committed suicide. Maybe being an asshole isn't what it's cracked up to be.
Since none of this has anything to do with the merits or demerits of the musical, I begin to suspect your objections are more about tribal membership than actual analysis of Hamilton.
EVERYONE KNOWS THE BEST RAPPERS WENT TO BARD
It's showing that he skates on Team Prog membership, not actual talent or a body of work.
Based on nothing but people that Pell disagrees with praising a musical he does not like.
Yeah I remember back in the early days of hip-hip everyone was flashing their diplomas for cred.....
Looks like someone did not get enough hugs as a child!
^reported as pedophile
He just wants little boys to feel loved Gilmore. Is that so wrong?
Musical theater when done well is a real feat of genius. It is hard enough to do the individual elements of musical theater. it is not so easy to wring a nice melody or interesting or clever lyrics or a play with compelling characters and an interesting plot. It is orders of magnitude more difficult than that to create a compelling story with an interesting characters and then at the same time create interesting music that fits with lyrics that are both compelling and advance the story or illustrate the characters. To do all of that, and very few people have ever succeeded in all elements, takes real genius.
Hamilton fails at every level. At best it is a compelling plot but it is a plot taken from history not created by the author. More importantly, the music stinks. And it stinks not because its hip hop it stinks by its own terms. it is bad hip hop. Name a single number from Hamilton anyone can actual hum or would listen to outside seeing the musical. You can't because there are none. Yes, the soundtrack has sold, but none of the individual songs has entered the national consciousness nor is there any indication they will.
It is a bad musical that succeeds as a way for people to virtue signal. Good for the creators. They have figured out a way to make millions from a bad piece of art and there is no reason to begrudge that. But there is also no reason to pretend it is anything other than a bad musical unless you feel the need to virtue signal.
Can you give some examples of which songs you hate most and why? Name a single number from Hamilton and one thing you don't like about it.
I relish the appearance of trolls today. It's very cold and we decided to not go skiing. So DON'T LET ME DOWN.
It's been a loooong time since we've seen a good one.
And the bonus is that it is a pop culture thread. Normally the trolls only come out for the partisan political threads so they can get their tiresome talking points out. Rarely if ever do we get trolls on a pop culture thread. It is like a refreshing brand of retard that gives us a break from the usual brand we get.
Yeah, jackass ace has no appreciation for theater....
I am guessing they followed Mr. Pell here. This is good but sadly they all tend to be no better than the dipshits we already have around. It is just the nature of pinko trolls I suppose.
troll, singular
they lack the conviction of picking a handle and sticking to it.
Haven't seen Hamilton, sounds overhyped, but I'm about half past give a fuck when it comes to buck-toothed inbred morons whining about liberals having culture and art. If you can't handle anything more complicated than Nascar, fine, but shut the fuck up about it and stop being such a baby.
Tro....
Oh, it's Tony.
Sigh. I'll take it.
Here. Have some Nilbog.
Trump won because of those elitists! Trump, the guy whose every piece of furniture is gilded, whose very brand is "elite."
If Trump won because liberals threaten the manhood of hillbillies with their book-learnin', then that's an indictment of the country that elected him. For our own edification, at least he didn't actually win the popular vote.
Trump won because Obama spent 8 years fucking over the country and Hillary was a horrible candidate. In the end, no one but stupid white people wanted Hillary to win. Smart white people hated her guts and minorities smart or dumb generally didn't care enough about the matter to show up and vote.
And you feel entitled to make claims completely contradicted by the polling evidence because you live in a fucking rightwing bubble.
The polling evidence says black turnout was down and Hillary attracted the stupid white vote and the angry Hispanic vote and that wasn't enough. The facts are what they are.
So, how does it feel to be in the wilderness? It is an entirely Republican government now. What is it like holding a fringe political view? Do you feel like you understand what its like to be a Libertarian better now?
More people voted for Hillary Clinton by millions. You do know that right?
You do know that CA and NY alone had her up 5.8M, and without those two Trump would have won by ~3M, right? Your candidate, party, and ideology sucks, brah, in epic fashion.
I'm gonna sell right-wing bubble bath soap.
That is brilliant. You so need to trademark that.
You think?
GO FUND ME here I come!
Wait. Those assholes won't allow it, right?
Gary Johnson & Johnson?
"claims completely contradicted by the polling evidence"
The same polling evidence that showed Hillary winning by a landslide?
You are taking my advice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKUOB8MN4Kc
No, it isn't. Trump's brand is vulgar excess, which is the archenemy of "elite".
I am not a NASCAR fan but I always laugh when I hear some ignoramus who couldn't understand the physics of the tires involved much less the entire car talk about how simple it is.
There is more intelligence and genius in a single roof panel of a NASCAR racer than it took to make this entire musical.
And liberals don't own the culture. Liberals would have to have culture to own a culture. And they have none of that and besides which destroying something is not owning it.
Yeah it takes real genius to turn left.
Of course liberals don't own culture. But you don't see liberals going to hillbilly hoedowns knocking the dicks out of everyone's mouths.
Yeah it takes real genius to turn left.
Yeah it takes real genius to saw on some wooden things with strings
Tony on Bach's violin concertos.
Thanks for proving just how stupid you actually are Tony. And Liberals don't own the culture. They own the destruction of it.
If redneck Nascar fans appreciate nuance and complexity, why do they constantly bitch about other people's pastimes?
Republican voters are fat, stupid, and spend all their time in a state of anxiety over their threatened masculinity. A black president must have really done a number on them.
Do you see liberals saying Obama won because people resent Nascar? No, because that would be idiotic.
Republican voters are fat, stupid, and spend all their time in a state of anxiety over their threatened masculinity. A black president must have really done a number on them
Wow Tony, that is some real nuance there. Liberals have no culture because they are totalitarians and are incapable of seeing anything other than as a tool for the furtherance of their politics. And that prevents them from understanding much less producing great art. Polemics are never great art. Art involves empathy and nuance which are things liberals are incapable of understanding, as the above statement illustrates.
"A black president..."
One drop rule, eh?
You do realize that spending your time throwing hissy fits about your dehumanized strawmen caricatures says a lot more about your own insecurities than your opponents' right?
Delicious, Tony, DELICIOUS....mmmmmmm...nom nom nom... more tears, please!
Lefty shitting on rednecks for liking NASCAR says in the same breath that lefties don't shit on redneck culture.
There is more of that brilliant prog insights.
Same here. Not into NASCAR but there's something called ENGINEERING that goes into these remarkable machines. Ever watch science or auto shows that show even progs like you the process of how some of these cars are made? Look up how Bentleys, Ferraris and Porsches (never mind F1/NASCAR./Indy cars) are made and get back to me.
More smarts in that than the Streepers of this world care to acknowledge; then again, why would they since they seem to hold their ignorance as a badge of honor or something.
Tony like all Progs loves science sexually. He does not however call her in the morning or really want to talk to her.
'Turning left' is something that only come out of the mouth of a clueless mind.
My second cousin is a professional race car driver and we'd talk about the science behind driving on tracks. Even an oval or 'round' circuit is filled with 'apex' points.
He must look at velodrome cycling and speed skating and think to himself, 'that doesn't look so hard!' They're just going in circles!
Yeah, 'all left' turns Tony.
I thought he was speaking of his ideological journey.
As John already pointed out attending a performance of Hamilton, like all the garbled shit they spout, the people they endorse and vote for, the cars they drive, the clothes they wear, the schools they choose, etc is all about social signaling. Progressives belong to a high school level clique and it is all about saying and doing the right things, hating and loving the right people. Superficial, vapid bullshit substituting for character and principle.
I doubt they understand or believe any of the shit they say.
Ex. - NYT bemoaning all of the bad things that are going to happen when the Trump economy takes off. After 8 years of praising the Obama economy suddenly they admit that doing the opposite of Obama will stimulate our economy. Hey Krugman, where is my trillion dollar coin?
Any social signaling going on right here on HnR?
Yeah, many here do it too. Maybe not in the public sphere, but in these comments, quite a bit.
Is this that renowned leftist tolerance and love trumping hate?
I'm not big on tolerance of people who think that not lynching people anymore deserves them a pat on the back.
Tolerant people don't tolerate intolerance.
You stole that.
So Tony is saying he has no tolerance for Democrats who have quit lynching blacks ?
Strange, I thought you supported the Democrats. When did you have this change of heart?
-jcr
Yeah it takes real genius to turn left.
Some of NASCAR engineering and design is on par with actual rocket science (in some ways more complex because you can't just go 'welp, it'll be in a vacuum'). Friction, centripetal force, downforce, drag all have to be factored in, and that requires great deal of physics and mathematics knowledge. It's stunning how ignorant you are yet frame yourself as some kind of intellect.
Well, at least in NASCAR they can count on a continuous supply of oxygen always being there to use ..... 😉
Shooting sports are another highly scientific hobby that the Left smears as the pasttime of stupid rednecks. You have to have some basic knowledge of physics, mechanical engineering, chemistry, and mathematics to really understand how to use a gun. If you get into designing or modifying guns, you need advanced knowledge of all these things. A lot of gun people also get into history and political philosophy as well through their connection with guns.
Anyway... I think half of these smug, elitist "I fucking love science" leftists would lose lose a few fingers if they tried to reload a cartridge and fire it out of a gun.
I've reached the point where I don't care much about racing sports in general, be it any form of auto racing, track and field, cycling (the grands tours are nice for the scenery, but that's about it), swimming, or the like. I find I prefer sports where the athletes are competing more directly against each other (and yes, I know about the strategic elements of many racing sports) instead of the clock.
You beat me to it. It's always funny hearing folks who would die of exposure if their car overheated in the woods try to mock professional auto racing as merely "cars driving in a circle."
I would bet money that if you gave Tony one full hour and a stack of literature on the topic that he would still not be able to explain NASCAR's scoring system.
Would anyone?
Probably not, including me and the people who created it. But somebody needed insulting on the internet and I worked with what I had.
And I tell you what else: it worked. Scrolling through the last twenty or so lengthy comments I can assure you that Tony has undoubtedly received loud and clear the message that he is in fact morally inferior to people who watch NASCAR.
Maybe now that motivated folks like me have helped settle that we can finally start to put this whole issue behind us.
The constant shitting on NASCAR from the left has never made any sense to me. I've never really watched, but my neighbor growing up was a huge fan, probably the only household on the block that would have it on. The reality is that their fans aren't a bunch of hicks glued to the couch hoping for a crash
Well it's no fun being a Proggie elite if you can't shit in groups of people for no good reason....
There are so few groups they're allowed to shit on that it all lands on the only one left.
We're not allowed either, but that's never stopped us.
Because hip hop is way above NASCAR on the spectrum from low to high culture.
God you're a bore. I bet you listen to the NPR classical music station because it makes you feel elite but couldn't tell Bruckner from Brahms.
Yes. I and my siblings all have prominent incisors which we inherited from our parents who were in fact 1st cousins. We enjoy watching auto racing on the wide screen in the mobile home before we put on our hoods for the klan rally. I thought about going to see Hamilton but it sounds kinda complicated. And I'd have to pawn the wide screen to buy a ticket which would piss off my buck toothed brothers who can get pretty mean once they get into that moonshine. But I know liberals have the best culture and art because I saw it on TV and they couldn't possibly be condescending assholes.
Now here's a writer who doesn't care about cocktail parties.
Hamilton did not author the electoral college. Follow the links back and you'll see the underlying source only claims Hamilton wrote about it -- which he did in the Federalist Papers -- not that he wrote it, because he didn't.
Get your facts straight and stop passing on false history.
"Hamilton wrote about it"
I thought the claim was that it was his idea, not that he authored it.
Completely irrelevant: Hamilton was not on the Committee of Leftovers but my great great great great...however many...grandfather was.
More like this guy, and I'll start donating again.
Ditto.
Thirded. If Reason wants to really make a splash, poking holes in the progressive narrative is a good start. Half the time they do a good job of that, and the other half is making futile attempts to work within its boundaries of "things that are known" without a hint of critical assessment. That's the kind of shit we're sick of.
FOURTHED!!! He even managed to wring some fresh prog tears from the liberal mop that is TONY!!! YES!!!
Some are irritated about the people who aren't white playing white people, but I'm not.
Cultural appropriation is always problematic and never okay.
I prefer the daring casting of having a sexagenarian white man play a much younger Hamilton.
I will add my vote: more Nicholas Pell!
I will grant that Pell should be on the college lecture circuit.
Holy fucking shit. A real libertarian I've never heard of before got in here somehow. After reading this I feel the same way I did when I saw CGI Princess Leis at the end of Rogue One.
...masturbating furiously, while drooling an effluvia of Hawaiian punch and decomposed Milk Duds?
Holy fucking shit. A real libertarian I've never heard of before got in here somehow. After reading this I feel the same way I did when I saw BGI Spinstress Gayah at the end of Pogue Gun.
Nick Pell = nominated for full-time Reason "European(ish) Correspondent".
why not? a slew of elections on the continent this year, combined w/ the continued Brexit fallout, should make for some interesting commentary.
Plus, OCR may get defunded, so Robby's entire genre may dry up.
I just got done listening to Daniele Bolelli's episode on the duel with Aaron Burr. Highly recommended. From it, I learned that Hamilton was a dick. Fuck that guy.
I mean, I knew it before, but. Fuck that guy.
He was generally a dick. It is too bad him and Burr didn't shoot each other.
History is full of these "why not kill both?" tragedies, isn't it?
Isn't this kinda the doomcock calling the kettle turgid?
He was a mixed bag. Yeah, he was a dick, but I have a grudging respect for him.
He was kind of an amazing dude in many ways. But still a prick.
Hamilton always struck me as a really bright and talented guy who was really overcompensating for the fact that he was born a penniless bastard.
The Clay Jenkinson Jefferson/Hamilton debate was pretty good.
Aaron Burr? More like Barren Her.
OT: Gotta love the quirky usage of English on the Indian subcontinent. Here's an obituary from Nepal:
Famous rapper Yama Buddha no more
This guy gets it. HE gets it. And he writes it well. Keep it up, REASON!!!
Would you grant Pell tenure here at Reason ?
Nobody cared about or saw this laughable play but tax-bloated DC ticks and idle, moneyed retards.
Show of hands, those who have actually seen the show?
Yeah, that's what I thought.
Why would I pay money to hear rap?
That's generally my view too-- not a rap fan, at all.
If you've seen the show, however, you know that only a bit of it is rap. Even that I liked. As in, I could understand the words, they weren't laced with profanity, and told an inspirational story about a boy coming from nothing and working hard to make a success out of himself-- rather than what I guess is the usual shoot-cops-abuse-bitches bit.
I liked all the music (of all genres), and the acting and singing, and the story line-- rags to riches, romance, duels, backdrop of war, all the good stuff.
It's a musical, and a top notch one. It is definitively not a history lesson or a political thesis; it doesn't preach at all. (I enjoyed the 10 Rules of Dueling, but I forgot 'em.) I thought they made a perfect ass out of George III. Easy target, but hey, that's why all the comics do air travel and dick jokes.
Sad the Hamilton producers actually thought they had standing to make political commentary. A monumentally stupid thing to do. People come to your show because it's entertaining, you asshats, not because your political views rock their world.
But I don't get my undies in a bunch over what show business people say. Unfortunately, Pellegi seems to. There's no story here; there isn't even a point.
I'd pay money to avoid it.

It's nice to read an article that doesn't sound like it is written by somebody looking to win SJW brownie points
That being said my favourite aspect of the 'Hamilton Thing' is that a journalist checked the voting records of the stars of the play pool so pretentiously lectured Pence from their holier than thou 'let me explain Democracy and civic duty perch' and revealed that many of them were either not registered to vote or were registered but hadn't voted did in the last few elections - do a search . it's just typical of holier then thou leftist douchebags
Reminds me of when Lena Dunham proudly tweeted that she had voted for Hillary in the NY primary and it turns out ... she hadn't
Or Kaepernick with his blacks are oppressed schtick who couldn't be bothered to vote in California... where legalized MJ was on the ballot - something that could substantially decrease said oppression since many stops, searches and arrests of blacks (and others) come from MJ searches (in CA - odour of MJ smoke gives PC to search the car etc)
The cast had something they wanted to say, they had a platform and an opportunity, and they said it. And they weren't rude about it - they respectfully were stating their differences of opinion and making an appeal. Pence couldn't afford them 5-10 minutes to respectfully listen after he watched them perform for 3 hours? That's pretty weak in my opinion. Talk about aristocratic!
This might be musically more to your liking:

nicholas pell, you're a fucking idiot... hamilton is a work of genius... anyone with a modicum of intelligence and who is familiar with shakespeare and with the founding fathers would understand that... hamilton may have had aristocratic leanings but his story is far from that of an aristocrat... the cat worked his ass off to achieve all that he did... and speaking of the electoral college... obviously, from the piece of shit article that you penned you've never bothered to read a single word of federalist 68... thanks for pushing me off the fence about continuing to view reason in my newsfeed on facebook... you guys are coming across more and more as a collection of fucktards...
I can tell how sophisticated you are by your masterful use of the ironic ellipses. You must have a full and rewarding intellectual existence, yo.

Hamilton is not aristocratic because he worked hard?
Clueless
obviously, from the piece of shit article that you penned you've never bothered to read a single word of federalist 68
Fucker, you probably thought the "Federalist Papers" were something to roll your blunts with before the last month or so.
I'm gonna try some Constitution Hip hop:
Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States, biatch, which may be included within this Union, Funion, according to their respective Numbers, eho eho eho eho, shit, am I doing this right?
"WE WUZ KANGZ, NOW WEEZ REPUBLIK."
Embarrassing, to the point where there is no anger, no frustration, no feeling to dissect the idiocy here; just pity. True, true pity for this man. Or boy? I don't know, I just don't. I feel so terribly for him.

The entire purpose of this show was to prove me wrong when I said that Rent would be the worst broadway show of all time.

I remember leaving after it was over, excited that I would be able to catch most of the jets/dolphins mnf game, then being told by my date that it was intermission, and wanting to cry.
I'm speaking of Rent.
I want to live in Tony's world, where typical liberal voters listen to Schubert, enjoy reading poetry by Whitman, and watches subtitled "foreign" movie.
Oh Tony. 90% of libs will have their heads buried in Smart Phones texting or playing video games. They're such brain dead Philistines that the SJW among them will say insane things like "We should take out Shakespeare out of college because there are too many white authors". All of your liberal friends have watched 500 times more Game of Thrones than read or watched anything spiritually and intellectually nourishing from other cultures.
I own a few Opera CDs (from the 90's!), chief among them Phantom of the Opera. A typical American could a hum a tune from that production. My Asian friends recognize the Triumphal March from Aida. No one could hum 3 songs from Hamilton. The Obama coalition will think you're too white if you listen to these music.
Car racing is a popular niche in many cultures, especially Asia. There's a reason why the Fast and the Furious movies do well overseas. Nascar is an American variation from the south. You automatically characterized it as "redneck" for obvious reasons.
Hey, I can make 3,4 origami figures. Oh, I must be more sophisticated than that guy who watches Nascar or enjoys bowling. I don't think so, because I don't think like a snob.

Phantom is not an opera. It's a pop music facsimile of an opera.

I would say that your 9th and 11th word belies your argument. Hamilton may not be your cup of tea but then you don't have to see it, or maybe you did see it and want your money back. There are plenty of choices on Broadway and at regional theaters or you could go to the movies. The point is that there are choices and I chose to "throw" my money away on Hamilton and have not regretted it for one moment. Lin Miranda has several Tonys to prove that he is not alone. When a person wants to see quality, if his name is attached they can be pretty sure that they are going to get it. I'm not the only person who feels this way but I also assume some people feel the way you do. That is what makes the world go round. You shouldn't discourage anyone from making their own theater selections. Even if a play is "bad" you can usually find something to learn or celebrate.
He's not saying that people can't see the play if they want to; he's saying that the play lacks artistic merit and that the political signalling associated with it is stupid.
"John" us Nicholas Pell?
Seriously, right down to the line about rich progs not having to suffer the consequences of their beliefs and policies.
Your not going to find America in American theater.
I agree with the sentiment that a lot of liberal and progressive people go on and on about this musical in an effort to show how enlightened and superior they are. I also agree that there are some inaccuracies in the musical, many of which are acknowledged by the creators and have been pointed out by other outlets. However, the quality of the music or its merit as a work of art is entirely subjective, and not really necessary to bring up if you just wanted to write an article about liberals being out of touch or acting superior. Whether you like it or not, the people who created and produced this show put a lot of effort into creating a work of art (whatever you think of its merit), and don't deserve to be put down for it. I think the author of this article adopted an unnecessarily angry and hostile tone to make his point. If you have a stance based on reason (which is what this publication is supposed to be about), then you shouldn't have to resort to attacking people you disagree with. I know that very few people are likely to read this comment, and even fewer are likely to care, but I didn't like the tone of this article at all, and I hope that the rest of the articles on Reason continue to contribute to a more respectable discourse than this.
Agree completely. This whole argument smacks of the same holier-than-though judgments that he accuses the liberal masses of.
Haven't seen the show, haven't read the comments but I suspected Hamilton was as described above. Anyway I love a good rant and really enjoyed this one.
I am starting to feel out of place for not having an opinion about Hamilton at all.
I feel like this guys article reads like a hipster screed:
First, there's the music. I'm admittedly not much of a hip-hop aficionado, but I know shit from Shinola. From my perspective the art form has more or less been going downhill since Strictly Business (the EPMD record, not the Tommy Davidson vehicle), but there have been some highlights worth mentioning, mostly thanks to Ice Cube and an army of Wu bangers.
I don't disagree with his analysis of virtue signaling, but it personally reads like a hipper than though screed but aimed against the more SJW type hipster.
Spent 20 years teaching kids History...I have seen very few things over the years as good as Hamilton for getting kids to fully engage on the issue of our founders. When you talk to students who are Hamilton fans, they know the names, the dates, and are better than you might think on the details, far better than those who have not encountered the play. (they are almost always aware of the historical inaccuracies because any search on the topic of Hamilton now yields the "mistakes" as well as the songs). The thing that struck me about the musical was that the basic storyline of Hamilton is pretty "Conservative"...meaning it is a celebration of meritocracy. If Hamilton doesn't appeal to you musically...that is fine...tastes vary. But Conservatives would be better served to focus on the fact that Hamilton's story, even as done in the play, supports an argument for our point of view.
I have seen very few things over the years as good as Hamilton for getting kids to fully engage on the issue of our founders.
No, it's pop treacle that studiously avoids Hamilton's beliefs about immigration to pimp an "all immigrants are awesome!" line that belongs more in a modern campus coffeehouse than it did in the late 18th century.
This "it got my kids to do (this intellectual exercise)" line is also getting exceedingly tedious as a post hoc justification for celebrating cultural mediocrity. I remember plenty of parents and teachers glorifying the Harry Potter series "because it got my kids to enjoy reading!"--and now these same kids, and their fucking parents, can't think in terms that are any more complex than a book series written for preteens. Seriously--look how many goons, especially from the left, compare so many events in their lives to Harry Potter tropes and wonder at the degradation that cultural decadence brings.
"This "it got my kids to do (this intellectual exercise)" line is also getting exceedingly tedious as a post hoc justification for celebrating cultural mediocrity."
Yeah...I would quote more...but you are not exactly making a solid case for your ability to judge how well the story actually engages students. (have you actually listened to the entire musical? or listened to it at all?...I ask because you misquoted the line...badly) Guess what, high school kids were not discussing Hamilton or the founding before this play came out (while people like me tend to discuss such things, not a typical topic for them) and they are doing so now...that means there is an opportunity to get them to go deeper...to think it through.
It's the draw, it's getting them to see the story as just that - a story. Not a bunch of stodgy men and facts and dates of battles. After I started listening to it (because of my daughter), I read some (legitimate) historical articles, saw the John Adams HBO miniseries, and got a better vision of the "story" than I've ever had. Unfortunately, those with a political agenda to hate it will be blind to anything good about it, even though there is. Which is ironic on a website called "Reason".

I continue to be astounded by the depths of cheap identity politics Reason.com sinks.
Rather than attempt a reasoned critique worthy of the old banner of this website, this article is someone's emotional venting about the demand a musical has generated among icky-gross liberals. I suppose the argument goes if one assumes liberals are icky gross, then something they really like is also icky gross. Profound idea there.
Reason.com is now filed under my same bookmarks as Breitbart and Salon.

Agreed.
It was much better than "Cats". I'm going to see it again and again!
Again, for the benefit of the writers at Reason, Hamilton had absolutely nothing to do with the creation of the Electoral College. In fact, he wasn't even a member of the committee at the Constitutional Convention that came up with the proposal. Please stop propagating this myth. It's as bad as the musical.
There is an ongoing argument on who the author of Federalist 68...Hamilton is usually given credit for it. It is pretty certain that he didn't oppose the electoral college. The Constitution would not have been passed without the Federalist Papers...ergo, he did, in fact, play some role.

the lyrics from hamilton is totally moronic. and switching races of historical figures is what liberals seem to want to desperately do - rewrite our history
This argument sounds like one a high school debater would give - and reads as more "feels" than "reals". It's fine to be reactionary as long as your points are solid. 1) Even if you don't consider it genius, it is at the very least clever as hell. And it's fun. 2) Whether or not you respect where Miranda came from, went to college, or his past works, that is not the standard by which to judge if the foundation of your critique is the musical. 3) He does reference in lyrics that Hamilton's plans were "nothing less than government control" and Jefferson says Hamilton "dresses like fake royalty" and "everything he does betrays the ideals of our nation", making clear that Hamilton's political philosophy was part of a deep, political divide that occurred during this time. And Miranda also states that it isn't meant to be taken as 100% historically accurate, he definitely takes creative license with it.
4) As for the cost of tickets, they charge it and shows sell out - isn't that what the free market is about? It's a luxury, not a necessity, why shouldn't they profit? 5) I don't understand your whole argument about commercial art. When he wrote it, he couldn't predict how it would take off. So he wrote it, and turns out droves of people paid to see it. Good for him! God bless America! And each observer can take whatever "message" they want from it - it's not like some maniacal entity commissioned Miranda to write propaganda in the form of a hip hop Broadway musical about Alexander Hamilton in order to brainwash the liberal masses into some agenda. Miranda read the story of Hamilton, and something hit him in a most intense, visceral way so as to create something so unique that it turns Broadway musicals, hip hop, and revolutionary history all on their ears in one fell swoop - something that even Ayn Rand, whether she agreed with political subtext or not, would have herself appreciated.
Hamilton, I had to leave after 4 minutes, dreadfully overrated pile of crap. But not as big a steaming heap as Cats or Rent.
Went to see Hamilton at Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Same production as in NY. My impression is this: Do you really hate your history that much so that you should show it the wrong way?! Do you really hate white people that much so that you wouldn't let historically white figures to be played be "non-white" actors?! Why should you have made such a cheap mockery of the great History?
And one more thing. Looks like Americans these days prefer stupid over the sky loud musicals old good drama and real history. So sad!..
I agree with Nicholas Pell's analysis of music and the theatrics. I am really disappointed with the performance. And the price of tickets are beyond common sense. Well, I have already paid. Consider it a gamble loss.
No, Mary's far more hysterical and far less prim.
