Hillary Clinton Campaign Concerned About Philly Transit Strike Affecting Election

Contract expired yesterday, union voted weeks ago to authorize strike.

Members of the Transit Workers Union in Philadelphia (Local 234) walked off the job starting at 12:01am this morning, after union and transit authority negotiators failed to reach a deal on a new contract. Workers voted to authorize the possibility of a strike two weeks ago.

Democratic Rep. Bob Brady, who calls President Obama "boss," visited the Sheraton Hotel where negotiations were being held, to encourage a deal, Philly.com reports. He told negotiators there that Hillary Clinton's Pennsylvania director had "a little concern" about a strike lasting through Election Day, saying it was "gonna hurt."

Among the most salient sticking points in the negotiations, the Southeast Pennsylvania Transit Authority (SEPTA) wants workers to contribute up to $6,000 a year into their healthcare plans. Workers currently enjoy "Cadillac" plans for which they pay $552 a year. Healthcare plans for individuals making $52,000 a year (the average annual salary for the transit workers, according to NBC Philadelphia) run between $300 and $700 a month on the Obamacare exchange for the Philadelphia area. As Avik Roy noted at Forbes in 2014, the last time SEPTA workers went on strike in part because of healthcare contributions, union support was a major factor in getting the Affordable Care Act passed. Perhaps rather than asking Philadelphia residents and area commuters to pay for their healthcare plans, the union workers should turn to the mechanisms their unions and the politicians their unions endorse have set up. The Transit Workers Union endorsed Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

TWU workers also complain about a pension cap of $50,000 that did not apply to managers, Philly.com reports. Such a cap certainly seems like it would be even more effective at controlling costs if it extended to all types of employees. SEPTA say its $1.2 billion pension liability is only 62 percent funded (so it could be even worse). Union officials also say that they are negotiating for longer breaks and to raise the minimum amount of mandatory time off between shifts, now at nine hours. SEPTA says it is already adjusting schedules.

The transit authority promises to seek an injunction forcing workers to return to the job if the strike conflicts with Election Day. The local elections commission says a 2009 strike did not depress voter turnout. Philadelphia is a heavily Democratic city, with Mitt Romney failing to win a single vote in 59 wards in 2012. Suburban SEPTA service remains operational, as those workers are represented by a different union, although reports on Twitter suggest TWU workers are blocking some of those services. SEPTA workers are organized under 17 different unions, of which TWU Local 234 is the largest.

Oh, my. This is too delicious.

    1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

      4 real

exactly what voters need is a reminder that Democrats are the party of douchebag-municipal-unions which regularly hold city-workers hostage as part of their extortive pension-negotiation process, one which has bankrupted other cities all around the country.

      1. timbo   9 years ago

        But unions created the weekend

        1. UnCivilServant   9 years ago

I thought that was an extention of the prohibition against working on the sabbath...

          1. timbo   9 years ago

I see "thank the union for the weekend" shirts all the time at the ports. Which is hilarious.

I think Ford was actually on the way to doing that.

Thank the union for screwing up baseball and football.

        2. GILMORE?   9 years ago

          unions created the weekend

So you're saying they've already accomplished all their major social goals and there's no reason to retain this anachronism of the early-20th century? I heartily agree.

          1. Zeb   9 years ago

Yeah, even supposing that unions are to thank for all the good stuff that people attribute to them, that's not a very good argument for their continued relevance. In fact, activist organizations' continued existence after their main goals are accomplished often leads to severe mission creep and a primary focus on keeping the racket going.

            1. timbo   9 years ago

Indeed. Kind of like retaining obsolete jobs just to keep scumbags in the money.

      2. albo   9 years ago

Hey, don't forget the mischief that private sector Philly unions can do, from threats to black eyes to lawsuits:
        http://www.philly.com/philly/b.....ing__.html

        Anybody ever hear of "salting?"

    2. Tonio   9 years ago

^This. But I suspect an "arrangement" will be reached before election day.

Just like with that poor people's group in Philly that were going to protest the convention, and all those Bernie folks who were going to make Philadelphia into a repeat of Chicago in '68?

"...But I suspect an "arrangement" will be reached before election day..."

Our local light-rail is a typically union-infected disaster, and they are looking for approval of a tax increase for 'safety'.
Well, a couple of months ago, there was a threat of a strike, which probably wouldn't help getting the measure approved, so the management just said 'sure!' to the union demands.
So, no. The measure is now probably gonna cover the new wage and bene increases.

  2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

" mandatory time off between shits"

All typo snark aside, king county Matro actually had a contract beef about time between shits.

    1. Bubba Jones   9 years ago

Some of this shit does make me understand why unions exist. What kind of asshole manager schedules someone for a double shift without their consent? I have seen people fired for not showing up to work on Father's Day when called that morning, or fired for not canceling a pre approved vacation when the boss changes his mind.

      1. esteve7   9 years ago

well that sounds like a shitty company with shitty managers. not exactly going to hire or keep good workers that way

  3. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

...with Mitt Romney failing to win a single vote in 59 wards in 2012.

  4. PurityDiluting   9 years ago

The tax on the Cadillac plans (which predominantly hurt unions) was the only skin the Dems put into the game.
I keep expecting that tax to be repealed.

    1. kinnath   9 years ago

My company killed our "Cadillac Plan" three years ago in anticipation of the tax. The union got fucked royally. They complained. Our management told them to think carefully about who they vote for in the future. It's been the only bright spot in the last 7 1/2 years of Obama's administration.

      1. PurityDiluting   9 years ago

"Workers currently enjoy Cadillac plans for which they pay $552 a year"
I misread that the first time. $552 PER YEAR? I'm paying almost that much in premiums per month next year, plus my deductible is north of $6,000
Welcome to the party union members!

        1. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

I'm close to that per pay period. For 3 people. For a high deductible plan. Fucking A.

          1. Playa Manhattan.   9 years ago

1700 a month. Quit your bitching.

            1. Florida Hipster   9 years ago

ouch. I don't pay that in a year.

            2. PurityDiluting   9 years ago

$1700 a month for one person?
Does that come with a nursemaid (or man) to wash you?
              Ouch. Tap out ouch

            3. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

Yeah but that includes pediatric dentistry, so quit YOUR bitching.

  5. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

So if the transit union strike interferes with ballot access, does that make the union racist?

    1. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

It nulls the election unless the outcome is what was desired anyway.

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

I guess I don't understand what they're afraid of. Are they worried the missing mitt Romney votes from 2012 will suddenly show up?

        1. Bubba Jones   9 years ago

Worried that they will lose the Dem votes in Philly that they need to offset the republican votes elsewhere.

    2. Tonio   9 years ago

Poll access, not ballot access, but not even that, really. Nothing is stopping dems from offering free rides to the polls, as both parties have often done in the past.

      1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

That's what I meant, but this is the excellent typo thread.

      2. albo   9 years ago

Trust me, people will vote even if Democratic ward leaders have to forge the signatures of those regulars who can't make it to the polls.

        1. Gilbert Martin   9 years ago

"forge the signatures of those regulars who can't make it to the polls."

Which will include the regular folk in all the cemeteries in town.

  6. esteve7   9 years ago

Some people just don't understand economics. I mean, they understand it when they want to, like soda taxes, but they act like it doesn't apply to shit they like.

We have a measure here to make businesses give part timers more hours before they hire more part timers. See the problem is too many part timers (caused by government regulations), so we are going to regulate our way out of the problem that regulation put us in.

So when I bring that up, the useful little idiots say I'm just an evil capitalist and hate the poor siding with THE CORPORATIONS.

I mean fuck, how do you live your life as such an imbecile.

    1. __Warren__   9 years ago

Of course I side with corporations, what have the poor ever done for me?

    2. Scarecrow & WoodChipper Repair   9 years ago

CA Gov Brown IIb signed a bill requiring overtime for migrant farm workers. Farmers tried explaining it would hurt them because farmers would rather hire twice as many 30 hour workers as 60 hour workers, and migrants are so seasonal that 60 hours during the season is pretty much the bulk of their work for the year; that's how agriculture works. Too bad, so sad; dipshit said he understood the economics but sometimes ya just gotta do what ya gotta do.

Oh hell, he and his Dems have passed so many stupid labor laws this year that I probably have several all mixed up, But the quote is real.

      1. Playa Manhattan.   9 years ago

Is Nancy Pelosi using union labor at her winery yet?

        1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

          Pelosi has a winery?

          1. Unicorn Abattoir   9 years ago

Pelosi Wines - You'll have to drink it to find out what's in it.

      2. buybuydandavis   9 years ago

"would rather hire twice as many 30 hour workers as 60 hour workers,"

Twice as many migrant workers, twice as poor.

        Mission Accomplished

    3. Zero Sum Game   9 years ago

Most Some people just don't understand economics.

Tell them anything that has the slightest whiff of counter-intuitiveness and their eyes instantly glaze over and they begin to "have doubts" as to the correctness of an economic assertion. Unintended consequences don't exist. Anything that requires lateral thinking to arrive at is false, heretical nonsense that is spread by opposition think tanks to confuse people.

Philly ward leaders will make sure the vote gets out. Hillary needs 400,000+ from Philly to win the state.

    1. Scarecrow & WoodChipper Repair   9 years ago

The union thugs can deliver double that, no prob.

  13. Fist of Etiquette   9 years ago

Union-backed Obamacare being a factor in suppressing voter turnout for the Democrat nominee in a battleground state's city with a reliable voter base? The only thing more awesome would be the Clinton campaign hiring every Uber and Lyft driver they can find to get people to the polls.

    1. Citizen X   9 years ago

This is just the Philly machine pretending that the votes that count will be cast by actual human beings going to the polls on election day, rather than being manufactured in captured precincts that report whatever is necessary for Clinton to carry the state.

    1. albo   9 years ago

      Exactly.

Did you know that some Philly polling places are in the living room or basement of local Democratic party workers' homes?

    2. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   9 years ago

If no one gets to the polls, it's going to be a lot more difficult to show up with tens of thousands of clinton votes.

      1. Agammamon   9 years ago

I figured it would be a heck of a lot easier. Then you just punch the ballots yourself without having to worry about a voter 'making a mistake'.

    My SEPTA story:

I attended a parochial Pennsylvania high school. Both the destination and my home were within a 1 mile walking distance. At that time bullying was still OK and I got bullied hard during my freshman year. But only if I took the yellow school bus. When i took the SEPTA Paoli Local to school all I had to do was wait for the train to start and sit on the steps for a few stops. On the run. I wasn't the only kid doing this and many of those other kids were tougher than the bullies I was avoiding. But they were a better class.

So anyway, it wasn't always roses sitting on the steps of a train car in winter The SEPTA conductors would let us in the coach, pretending to punch our tickets.
