Bill Weld: Carl Bernstein's Speculation That I Will Drop Out to Help Hillary Clinton Is 'Wishful Thinking' (UPDATED)

"Under no circumstances will our energies be diverted from our goal of winning the election," Weld says in response to Watergate journalist's suggestion that he might bolt.

On Friday, legendary Watergate investigative journalist Carl Bernstein broke a six-week Twitter silence to say this:

Bill Weld could be a hero--instead of a Nader--if he renounces his own Libertarian candidacy and endorses/campaigns for HRC. Stay tuned.

— Carl Bernstein (@carlbernstein) September 17, 2016

Bernstein, whose last book was 2007's A Woman in Charge: The Life of Hillary Rodham Clinton, did not clarify whether his "Stay tuned" advice was to await his further reporting on the matter, or to collectively see whether his hunch turns out to be true, or just to keep the television on for upcoming cable news appearances. The latter theory looks more likely after Bernstein's double-dip this weekend on CNN, beginning with this interview by Don Lemon last night, in which the only insider information the investigative journalist shares is that he's known Bill Weld "for a long time." Aside from that, it's mostly a speculative warning from a Clinton-centric point of view. Excerpt:

I know how much he despises Donald Trump. He worked with Hillary Clinton on the impeachment committee of Richard Nixon, he's known her for many years, he has respect for her. Weld says he got into this race as a real alternative. He no longer is a real alternative, and I believe that there could be some pressure brought on him to say "To hell with this Libertarian stuff right now, that's another day to fight for Libertarianism. Right now we have to keep Donald Trump out of the White House." And I think he might do it, he might campaign for her, he might go out and talk to these Millennials who indeed are peeling away from Hillary Clinton in a dangerous way […]

Look, Bill Weld does not want to be Ralph Nader, and help elect a president of the United States such as Nader did in Florida in the case of George Bush. There's a real underlying story here, and I think in the next few days we're gonna have a chance to look at it. The other thing is, Weld by now must have a pretty good idea that he is running on a ticket headed by a flake. Let's really talk about Mr. "Where is Aleppo" who's really in this race partly to advance a marijuana initiative as much as anything else. And he's taking time off from marijuana during the campaign, he says, and he's not gonna take too many tokes during the campaign. This is a bit of a joke at this point, and I think if Weld is smart he might get the hell out. And he could be a hero in this—and look, Bill Weld would like to be a hero, he would like to be relevant again in the political discourse. He's certainly not relevant in a positive way where he is right now, and I would look to some real thought of him renouncing the Libertarian candidacy that his represented by himself and get off the ticket.

That sounds a lot more like someone trying to pressure Bill Weld than someone who has knowledge that Bill Weld is about to yield to pressure. Yet here was Bernstein on this morning's Reliable Sources*:

I was the one that first reported, I think, that Bill Weld, I believe, is thinking about dropping out of this race if it looks like he and Gary Johnson might get Donald Trump elected. Weld despises Trump. It's a big story. I don't think he's made up his mind to drop out, but I think it's certainly a possibility down towards and after the first debate, if it looks like his candidacy would help Trump, and that he would then renounce his candidacy and go out and help Hillary Clinton, who he served with on the impeachment committee of Richard Nixon. So stay tuned on that.

Sounds serious, right? Er, signs point to no. Weld released the following statement this afternoon**:

I strongly believe that our Libertarian ticket of two former two-term Governors, fiscally responsible and socially inclusive, is the best bet for America in this year's election.

Gary Johnson and I will campaign with all our strength to make that case to the American people from now until November 8th. Under no circumstances will our energies be diverted from our goal of winning the election and serving our country.

And in a comment to CNN, Weld attributed Bernstein's remarks to "wishful thinking on the part of the two-party duopoly."

Libertarian Party National Committee Chair Nicholas Sarwark did not seem too worried about the prospects of a defecting Weld this morning:

It's kind to help the elderly learn new technology.
Can someone show @carlbernstein how to delete his account? https://t.co/HCR4YJHGb9

— Nicholas Sarwark (@nsarwark) September 18, 2016

Via DM, Sarwark told me that Weld's performance at a big L.P. rally in Seattle last night "was not one of a guy considering dropping out," and added: "I don't know which explanation is sadder: that a once respected journalist is reduced to making up stories to sell his book or that a Presidential candidate has to use her biographer to attack Gary Johnson because she's afraid to do it herself."

In several interviews with Reason throughout the summer, Weld has been critical of Gary Johnson's three-word description of Clinton on CNN as a "wonderful public servant." When I interviewed the ticket at FreedomFest in July, here's how Weld put it:

There are a couple of answers I have given in the media appearances that we've done that I would like to have back. And they were, you know, "If you guys don't win," you know, "would you vote for Trump or Mrs. Clinton?" And I've sort of come pretty close to saying Mrs. Clinton. As a matter of fact, in the CNN one, I think I did. As we've gone along, I think Gary and I have gotten more and more in the frame of mind not only are we in this because we think we have a chance to win, but we can see the path now. So, all I'm thinking about now is winning the whole shooting match, and if I got that question now, the next time I get that question, I'm going to be smart enough and disciplined enough to give the answer that Gary has always given, which is, "Look, I don't know. There's going to be a Libertarian on the ballot, and I'm voting Libertarian, and I'm not going to lose any sleep over that." […]

That's a very tactful way of me saying maybe Gary would like to have back those three little words, "wonderful public servant."

Bill Weld has been a controversial pick among Libertarians, barely squeaking by on the second ballot at the Libertarian National Convention. But as odd and/or not-particularly-libertarian Weld has seemed at times during the campaign, I would be flabbergasted if Bernstein's speculation proved remotely true. The would-be veep's critiques of Clinton have gotten more pointed with each passing day, and nothing about running as a third-party outsider makes you one iota fonder of the power-mad duopoly. I think Bernstein's full of hot air.

Meanwhile, the Libertarian ticket will be interviewed by Steve Kroft on tonight's 60 Minutes at 7:30 ET. Read about that and watch a preview here.

I thought Bernstein wanted to expose corruption, not help put kleptocrats in office.

    1. Chipper Morning Wood   9 years ago

It's only corruption when Republicans do it. When Democrats do it, it's smart politics.

      A Libertarian Case For Hillary

I live in Georgia, I figured it's solid red so my vote won't matter, but I've seen a few references to Hillary doing well enough that Georgia may be in play so I'll have to think about voting. Thanks to all you folks saying I have to vote for Trump to keep Hillary from winning and Johnson has no chance and is a wasted vote, I may not vote for Johnson - maybe I'll vote for Hillary.

Sure, Hillary is evil, I've known that since back when she was President the first time and, after failing to get Hillarycare passed, said the reason Hillarycare didn't get passed is because they did a poor job of educating the American people. That told me right there that Hillary knows with every fiber of her being that she knows best and she's always right. The only reason you might disagree with her when she explains her plans is because you're too stupid to understand something as simple as 2+2=4, or you're crazy and think that 2+2=5 or you're evil and know damn well that 2+2=4 but have some evil motive for trying to convince people that 2+2=/=4. If you're stupid you need a re-education camp, crazy people need a psychiatric prison and evil people get the gulag or the bullet to the back of the head. And Hillary would do it - she absolutely positively beyond-a-shadow-of-a-doubt knows she's right and you're wrong and you need to shut up. If you don't shut up, she will shut you up and feel entirely justified - hell, downright commendable - for doing so.

      1. Jerryskids   9 years ago

But Trump is Hitler - wants to make Germany/America great again, blames all our problems on the Jews/Mexicans who've got to go and the Chinese/British who are taking all our money and the spineless shitweasels in government who know what the problem is and how to solve it but lack the Will to be the Man of Action he is. And with a 40% plurality of enthusiastic supporters willing to crack heads, the spineless shitweasels worried only about saving their positions of privilege will easily see which way the political winds are blowing and will eagerly jump on the Hitler/Trump Train. Hell, they can't even stand up to the enemy and you expect them to stand up to a man of the volk/people? Besides, we all know Hitler/Trump doesn't really mean what he says and has no way of getting it done even if he did. And then too, kicking the shit out of the Sudetenland/Iraq and taking their land/oil is only taking back what's ours anyway.

        1. Jerryskids   9 years ago

So when the guy who says he's the only one who can save America (and you assumed he meant no other help was required rather than no other help was allowed) and said either support me or get the hell out of my way starts ignoring Congress because he's got a pen and a phone just like Obama and Congress starts ignoring him ignoring them because it's the will of the people and hey, he is getting things done, when he starts rounding up those Mexicans and sticking them in concentration camps temporary detention facilities "just until we can properly process them" and doing the same with the Muslims as a temporary security measure "just like FDR did with the Japs, just for the duration", when he starts doing the same with seditious traitors who support the enemy by daring to criticize these actions and insist they have "free speech" (there is a war on, you know), when he starts nationalizing companies unpatriotic enough to try moving jobs or cash overseas or unpatriotic enough not to close their overseas operations and bring them back to the US, when he starts getting really goddamn belligerent with any foreign country that questions his foreign policy of getting really goddamn belligerent with foreign countries, when after 8 years he decides that his remaining in office is more important than some silly old piece of paper - and, by the way, he'd prefer to be addressed as Your Highness -

          1. Jerryskids   9 years ago

well, don't come crying to me with your "but I didn't know!" bullshit. It can happen here and it will happen here and it is happening here.

The only saving grace? The people most opposed to Hillary are Trump supporters and the people most opposed to Trump are Hillary supporters. One of those groups expresses their discontent by holding weepy candle-light drum circle vigils and singing Kumbayah and the other expresses their discontent by shooting people in the fucking head. Which one of these two would you rather have as President - just in case, you know, you decide you'd rather not have them as President any more? The one who has the people with guns supporting him or the one with the people with guns opposing her?

            1. Jerryskids   9 years ago

Or maybe I'm just drunk and talking shit and it doesn't much matter who gets elected and we just keep muddling along like we always have, kicking the can down the road as we go. Except we've spent all our money, we've maxxed out our credit cards, we're running out of people to bum some money from and the bill collectors are getting more numerous and more persistent and the shitheads in Washington keep telling us it'll all be okay as long as we give them a little more power and a little more money. .We just cannot keep on keeping on like this and if the only way it's going to end is badly, might as well do it now and get it over with. Let's get ready to rumble, I say. I'm sick and tired of busting my ass every day trying to take care of me and mine and have you bastards take 40% of it and then you have the gall to stand there and lecture me about what an ungrateful evil wretch I am for daring to complain and how morally superior you are for your work in redistributing wealth to the more deserving and doing your damnedest to make it even harder for me to earn a living doing something productive. At least a junkie sticking a gun in my ribs and stealing my wallet doesn't try to argue that I stole it from him and he's entitled to it and I have an obligation to turn it over, he's honest enough to admit I've got money and he wants it so he's just going to take it.

I support Hillary rather than Trump because if this is all gonna end I want it to end with a bang and not a whimper.

So, basically, this amounts to an endorsement of the Johnson/Weld ticket by Bernstein.

Apparently Bernstein can't bring himself to endorse Weld openly, but wishing the Libertarian candidate was working for Hillary (while Hillary is floundering and needs Weld's help), that's about as close to endorsing the LP ticket as you can get without actually endorsing the ticket.

I've cared less and less for this LP ticket, and then I read Kevin Drum and got some enthusiasm back. Some of the points:

He opposes any federal policies that would make college more affordable or reduce student debt. In fact, he wants to abolish student loans entirely.
He thinks Citizens United is great.
He doesn't want to raise the minimum wage. At all.
    He opposes net neutrality.
He opposes any kind of paid maternity or medical leave.
He opposes any government action to address climate change.
He wants to cut the corporate tax rate to zero.
He appears to believe that we should reduce financial regulation. All we need to do is allow big banks to fail and everything will be OK.
He wants to remove the Fed's mandate to maximize employment and has spoken favorably of returning to the gold standard.

He doesn't want to raise the minimum wage. At all. Not even a teensy bit!

He's certainly not relevant in a positive way where he is right now, and I would look to some real thought of him renouncing the Libertarian candidacy that his represented by himself and get off the ticket.

I can absolutely see this line of thinking from Governor Weld. He is not a libertarian and owes libertarianism nothing.

"I am a southern pastor and an educated professor who lives in rural Arkansas amidst folks who own guns and vote Republican. I hold college degrees...I will write an article and tell the whole damn world the truth:

"1. I am a proud member of the Christian Left. Not only that; I find it very hard to believe that you can read the Bible and vote Republican right now. Intolerance and hatred are not in the teachings of my Christ.

    "2. I vote for Democrats....

"3. I believe in freedom of speech...

"4. AND freedom of religion, for everyone...

"5. I live my life for God, but I do not think God belongs in our Constitution....

"6. You cannot be both prejudiced and Christian....

"7. There is too much hate and there are too many guns in this country....Enough is enough. I don't care about your damned right to own guns. I am tired of children dying in this great country.

"8. Consenting adults have a constitutional right to get a government document certifying their legal marriage....

"9. Traditional marriage in the Bible is polygamous. Get a Bible and read it before you try to use it to support your hatred and intolerance.

Intolerance and hatred are not in the teachings of my Christ...Get a Bible and read it before you try to use it to support your hatred and intolerance.

I always find it funny when liberal Christians say this, as they are usually the type of person who would define a lot of what Christ said as hatred or intolerance. After all, where is the tolerance in saying "No one comes to the Father except through me"? And wouldn't they consider it hateful all of the many references to people being cast into hell for their sin? And if Christ's teachings are so hateful and intolerant in their view, why do they even call themselves Christians?

      1. Trshmnstr smells of Lo Mein   9 years ago

And if Christ's teachings are so hateful and intolerant in their view, why do they even call themselves Christians?

              1) Not convinced of Parkinson's proper nor Parkinsonism in general. (Not even the stair-step TX slope of carbodopa-levodopa fits.)

              2) Not convinced of MS; not enough S/SX confluence.

              3) And while bacterial pnuemonia is possible (even I suggested that at one time, and not wiling to R/O. I also accurately predicted Troomp would avoid negatively commenting on it), the most likely culprit is a systemic vascular disorder, complicated by a post-cerebral vascular accident, and comorbid with her faulty thyroid. That doesn't even include the tongue tumor, not to mention the other stuff she, her doctor, and her staff are keeping under wraps (such as her actual current med list).

She definitely has a chronic, debilitating condition that is causing a health decline, in particular those atypical syncopal episodes, and her HX of falls.

If some of the things said about what a foul-mouthed absolute bitch she can be in private are true, she might very well just measure up Trump and very calmly tell him exactly what she thinks of him. Trump may be the one losing his cool and shrieking at Hillary.

I see where Rience is all-aboard the Trump Train.

I'm telling you, Trump is not destroying the GOP, he's transforming it into the Democrat Party as the Democrats slide off into straight-up socialism and he's thereby saving it. They'll be purging the libertarianish and the Old Guard conservatives and anybody that values principles over principals. And whatever party replaces the GOP and what they've become will be a smaller but stronger party.

You know, the "evangelicals" deserve the GOP and the GOP them. You're endorsing a "Christian" who most assuredly worships that little golden idol he looks at in the mirror every morning? You know, that Bible you keep thumping has something to say about false messiahs and caring more about things of this world rather than of the next. I'm pretty sure it says "go to hell."

I think it is giving Johnson/Weld too much credit to claim they will have a significant impact on this election.

They are polling what, around 7%? What was Johnson/Gray polling last time? My guess is that it was around the same, and that the final results will be as well.

The poll numbers are meaningless. When they actually get into the voting booth, Americans don't vote third party for President - especially not a long established one like the LP.

      Johnson/Grey got 1% of the vote (.99%) in 2012

From what i can tell, they didn't start covering his poll results until Sept/Oct 2012 (which makes sense; the same is true now); and he was doing about 6%

I think he'll do 3% or better this year. But not much more. 5% may be a stretch.

Are the Hillary people really this scared of Johnson ruining her chance to win, that several of them are devoting such time to attempting to discredit him? Is he really this much of a threat to her? Before this whole "Aleppo" deal, how many people actually already knew about Aleppo? I know I sure as hell hadn't heard about it being some big deal before that "gaffe." But maybe I just hadn't been reading/hearing enough foreign policy news. I'm also sick and tired of this whole "only cares about pot" BS constantly thrown at the Libertarian brand as an attempt to say "these guys aren't serious, just point and laugh at them." Almost as annoying as the completely dishonest "isolationist" label. No, the serious people are the ones wanting to double down on the failed drug war and on constant foreign interventions.

    1. GILMORE?   9 years ago

Are the Hillary people really this scared of Johnson ruining her chance to win...? Is he really this much of a threat to her?

At the end of last week, the biggest piece of news was that "Millennials Aren't Into Hillary"

And young voters are going for 3rd parties in the largest numbers ever .

      Reason covered it here

A New York Times/CBS poll shows 26 percent of voters under the age of 29 supporting Johnson and a further 10 percent supporting Green presidential nominee Jill Stein. Similarly, a Quinnipiac poll shows Johnson at 29 percent of young voters, and Stein at 15. In that poll, Clinton barely edges out Johnson among young voters, getting 31 percent.

Consequently, everyone and their Mother are now screeching about how you can't vote for Johnson and be a liberal at the same time, and god knows, if you're not a Liberal, you're Neonazi scum.

Whether Johnson actually pulls enough from the Left to actually make a difference? who knows. I doubt it. More young people "wont vote at all" than will end up choosing GJ over Clinton.

      1. The Elite Elite   9 years ago

I would think Jill Stein would be the target for disdain by them in much the same way Ralph Nader has been, while Johnson would be the target of attacks by Republicans. With all the brainwashing of youths into statism and Gaia worship I'd think those disgusted by Clinton would be naturally drawn towards her campaign. Hell, I just looked at her website's Issues page out of curiosity and saw nothing but a leftist's wet dream on there. Fight Global Warming, support BLM, $15 minimum wage, right to a job. I don't see how that doesn't win out with the brain dead youth over Johnson's platform.

        1. MarkLastname   9 years ago

Millennialis may be smart enough to see that Stein has no chance at even making a dent, so they gravitate toward Johnson, the tallest of the midgets, instead. Or maybe people just think millennials are that smart.

          1. The Elite Elite   9 years ago

Maybe. Still, I don't think my fellow millennials are smart enough for that kind of thinking. They're much better at emoting, and boy is Stein's platform full of their kind of emoting. But like Gilmore said, come Election Day most of these clowns will likely just not vote rather than vote either Johnson or Stein.

    OT:

Someone reminded me this weekend that God is a libertarian.

The people of Israel wanted a king like the nations around them. God channeled Murray Rothbard:

"11 He said, "This is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

12 Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.

14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants.

15 He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.

16 Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle[a] and donkeys he will take for his own use.

17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.

18 When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day."

    1 Samuel 8:11-18

Say whatever you want about the existence or non-existence of the Biblical God, but he often seems like he's a lot smarter than the people who would have had to make him up.

You gotta account for that somehow.

It's uncanny how Samuel, in verse 13, foresaw compulsory cakes.

      1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

        More or less.

I guess we're dealing with some universals, here. Heaven is basically a transhumanist libertopia. People choose to respect each other's rights of their own free will, so there's little government to speak of, and you don't get old or die.

Meanwhile, it's interesting to think about what it would be like the taxes we paid to the government and all the labor that goes to government, if all that went to some productive purpose instead.

It's interesting that someone was thinking about that during the Babylonian captivity when all this stuff was being compiled. What we're dealing with today is often a lot worse than what Samuel was warning us about.

I wish the government only took 10%.

        1. The Fusionist   9 years ago

I think this is one of the favorite parts of the Bible for atheist libertarians.

          Along with Psalm 146:3.

"It's uncanny how Samuel, in verse 13, foresaw compulsory cakes."

Yes, mythical writings 'foresaw' all sorts of things:
"George Ivanovich Gurdjieff (/????rd?i??f/; January 13, 1866 ? 1877? - October 29, 1949[2]), also commonly referred to as Georges Ivanovich Gurdjieff and G. I. Gurdjieff, was an influential early 20th century mystic, philosopher, spiritual teacher, and composer born in what was then an Armenian region of Russia of Armenian and Greek descent.[3] Gurdjieff taught that most humans do not possess a unified mind-body consciousness and thus live their lives in a state of hypnotic "waking sleep", but that it is possible to transcend to a higher state of consciousness and achieve full human potential."

There is a long lived controversy about schizophrenia. It doesn't seem to have existed before the 19th century.

There are groups of academics from a number of disciplines who argue that the basics of what we think of as schizophrenia today are a holdover from the ancient world. . . . that in the ancient world, people didn't perceive their dreams, etc. as being distinct and different from waking life. When they drew pictures in their minds with their imaginations, etc. listened to poetry, even, it put them into something like an hypnotic state as experienced by a schizophrenic.

The idea is that in the old days, we were all schizophrenics. The way we started to interpret our dreams and fantasies changed with the advent of psychology. As people became more educated about what the science was telling us about our minds, they started dismissing their dreams and fantasies as figments of their imaginations. But the way the member of a heretofore uncontacted tribe in Papua New Guinea experiences a dream or a fantasy isn't necessarily like the way you or I would.

        2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Think of it like with animals. My dog has dreams. My dog sees its reflection in the mirror. My dog doesn't recognize itself as the reflection--it can't pass the mirror test. But it sees the reflection. For some reason, my dog dismisses the image in the mirror as something to be ignored. It must seem supernatural to my dog. My dog seems to treat images in the mirror like dreams, but does my dog know what it sees when it's asleep is a dream? Why does it dismiss what it sees in the mirror?

I can imagine people acting like dogs that way back during the ancient world. and I can imagine that there are a lot of people out there who still experience the world that way.

          1. VG Zaytsev   9 years ago

Why does it dismiss what it sees in the mirror?

Because the mirror image does not smell or sound like a dog.

            1. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

              That might be it.

Maybe the rabbits and cats they see when they imagine something or dream about it don't smell or sound like they should either.

Point is that at some point, dolphins, elephants, magpies, and bonobos (but not baboons) became able to pass the mirror test. As magpies passing the mirror test may suggest, it isn't just about the physical capacity of the brain--our psychology evolved and left other animals behind.

But just because we became able to recognize our own reflections doesn't mean we stopped interpreting the other things we perceive only in our own minds as real. Many of us have conversations in our heads about things--we talk to ourselves when we're alone. In the ancient world, they seem to have experienced these voices as real. Socrates heard voices in head. He thought it was from the gods.

              http://tinyurl.com/7q4aqlg

That is sort of like what schizophrenics experience. They hear voices. But the voices they hear are from the different hemispheres of their brains talking to each other. We know that. We know about psychology. We've watched movies like Fight Club and Psycho.

            2. Ken Shultz   9 years ago

Back in the ancient world, books were never read to oneself in silence. The idea that you had an inner psychological voice that was different from your regular voice wasn't a thing. Poetry was always read aloud. When we read to ourselves in silence, it's like we're talking to ourselves. I had a clear idea of what Bilbo and Frodo looked like when I read the book--long before I'd seen any movie. I thought I knew what their voices sounded like. We paint the whole world in our minds.

I think that's might be a taste for what it was like for people in the ancient world before they learned to separate the artifacts of their imaginations from the rest of the world in their daily lives like we do. That some people still have problems separating those two may be what we're talking about when we talk about schizophrenia. Maybe they're just like people used to be.

I suspect people used to hear voices when they prayed. Maybe normal people heard voices when they prayed a couple thousand years ago. If so, then if some people are still walking around like that, it shouldn't surprise us. We're only talking about a couple thousand years of social evolution.

Saying you have to account for that fact isn't stupid at all.

It's like accounting for altruism in the state of nature.

If you can't account for altruism in the state of nature or why the God of Abraham says things that are so much smarter than the individuals who wrote them, then you should abandon atheism and convert to Christianity.

P.S. Markets make stupid people behave as if they were smart.

P.P.S. If God and religion is a social adaptation, then its survived through that evolutionary process. No one was smart enough to design a language by themselves either--but they somehow they all spoke one.

In other words, you can account for those things. And you really should.

Because the argument that God doesn't exist despite inconclusive but substantial evidence that he does because God doesn't exist is a stoopid argument.

For the atheists here: You finally have a group that speaks for you! (/sarc)

"Buoyed by poll numbers showing religious "nones" growing as a percentage of the U.S. population, the Secular Coalition for America is even trying to highlight candidates who are "nontheists" and says Democrats and Republicans will have to work to win their votes....

"Mr. Decker's group has been highlighting a "secular candidate of the week"...

"Last week's candidate was Misty Plowright, a transgender woman running as a Democrat for Congress in Colorado. The group quotes her as saying that "freedom and equality for all belief, including secular ones, are of the utmost importance to me.""

Here's Misty Plowright ("a passionate social democrat") On The Issues:

"America needs another New Deal, and it's time to bring back many of the policies that pulled this country out of the Great Depression and created a middle class that was the envy of the entire world. Investing in our infrastructure, not just the standard list of roads and bridges, but also in the infrastructure that we'll need to truly succeed in the 21st century is critical. Much like the electrification of the nation, and bringing telephone service to everyone, we must now turn our attention to broadband internet access."

    1. The Fusionist   9 years ago

      also:

"we must ask those who benefit the most from our society, whether wealthy individuals or powerful multinational corporations, to pay their fair share of taxes. They should give back to the society that has given them so much. We bailed out Wall Street and other powerful companies, it's time they returned the favor."

      1. Sevo   9 years ago

Yep, that defines atheists right there! Beat on that strawman, eddie. And tell us once again about the New Testament Party! It's always amusing.

Eddie is in no way associated with anything like libertarianism other than his one claim that religious nuts like him should not be forced to bake cakes for gay nuts.
Other than that, eddies views are driven by the new testament, and I'm sure eddie will pedantically point out that his views aren't "really" that way, given that he's never argued in good faith from the day he showed up here.

Maybe take it down 2 notches and try approaching it in a way that doesn't make you come off as the asshole of the conversation.

There is not one shred of evidence to support a claim there is a god, and absent some proof of a mystical being, the presumption is that there is no mystical being, so I can see that you, as a bleever, find eddie's fantasies persuasive.

                Ah, OK.

I really don't want to force anyone to not-bake a gay cake, or to lock up anyone for worshipping or not worshipping differently from me. I don't even want to lock up adults for voluntary sodomy committed in private. The book linked in my handle provides some more detailed philosophical discussion about the kind of freedom policies (at least for this country) I'd like to see implemented.

Yes, I'd recognize anyone's right to shoot me if I aggress against them, but if I were the worst "danger" you faced you'd really be in a very safe situation because you'd only have to worry about me trolling you on H&R.

I got called out a while back by some guy who wanted to talk about guns. It was a gun article, and I was way off topic. So what? I told the guy to fuck off.
When my wife died, I was very far from my family and friends, and the comments section became... an escape, I guess. I told the asshole (the gun thread guy) that I thought of many of my fellow commentators as friends.
Eddie, you post as much as you want, just don't try to tell me that you're friend's mom is making $18123 for working just a few hrs from her computer.

No, if the candidates I voted for were elected I'd be ratcheting *down* the amount of government force used against you - though that's often theoretical since my candidates have a tendency to not win.

I also see Internet tough talk - about people shooting or aborting me - as an exercise of First Amendment rights. I don't feel threatened, because I'm not a wuss or a US attorney.

Eddie, you've argued maybe once in good faith. Maybe. The rest of the time, you've employed every bit of sophistry available to avoid an honest response in the hopes you can pitch your superstition.
Let's be clear: You are not only an ignorant bleever; you are a slimy and dishonest propagandist.
Now you come back presenting a 'reasonable' response as it that were your normal position.
Do you expect those of us who read your thousands of attention-begging posts to now believe you've become 'reasonable'?

"You know what? Maybe Eddie likes the people here. Maybe he's lonely. Maybe he's just bored. Who cares?"

I don't care if he admits he's here for nothing other than attention, and further admits his posts are bullshit from end to end. As he should.
I care when the twit posts bad-faith comments as he does constantly. I have issues with bullshitters
Maybe that doesn't bother you since you're here for jollies. That's OK by me, but if you post bullshit like eddie, presume you'll be called on it.

I'm not sure why Democrats think that Johnson/Weld dropping out would help them. Both Clinton and Trump are in the same basket of deplorables, so neither of them is going to win on charm or personality. But when it comes down to actual issues, well...take the test at iSideWith.org and see for yourself.

Hillary turns over all the docs that prove her guilt.

Trump says screw it and just leaves.

Weld stops saying the word "duopoly" and just leaves.

Fuck Carl Bernstein. Hillary makes Nixon look like a choirboy.

  73. PapayaSF   9 years ago

OK, I just read this thread. Jeez, what a downer. Some people need to get some perspective and calm down.

The debates will be interesting. I'll be surprised in Hillary can make it through all of them without coughing, brain-freezing, falling down, or stroking out. All Trump has to do is some studying, keep his tongue in check, and be polite and presidential.

The poll shift toward Trump will continue.

I will restate my prediction that Trump will win, and that he'll do fine among blacks and Hispanics. And, on balance, it'll be a win for liberty compared to a Hillary win (the only other possible outcome, sorry).

And President Trump will certainly be much more entertaining than Hillary could ever be.

    P.S.: Fun new app: Candid.

  74. Think It Through   9 years ago

Carl, it's not "where is Aleppo." The gaffe was "what is Aleppo." May seem small, but it's an important distinction. Johnson explained that he just "blanked" and the subject matter change was so abrupt that he thought maybe ALEPPO was an acronym or something. When clued in that it was Syria, he was like "oh yeah" and launched into a Syria spiel. Whereas "where is Aleppo" implies that he knows it's geography, he's just not sure where it is. Not what happened at all.

Either way, not good, but a reporter should get it right.

    1. Meletaeus   9 years ago

No, even when the reporter said "Syria" he was still blank in the face until the guy said "humanitarian." But at least he's grateful that nobody got hurt there.

If Bill Weld dropped out to endorse Hillary, it would help Trump. Americans don't like a turncoat, and they don't like the politically-connected. Trump would have an absolute field day with that.
