Claremont McKenna College: 'We Do Not Mandate Trigger Warnings.' Period.
In line with the University of Chicago, Claremont McKenna College describes free speech as 'foundational.'

Claremont McKenna College President Hiram Chodosh penned a terrific defense of free speech and intellectual diversity in a recent letter to students responding to the controversy created by the University of Chicago.
While many college administrators are working overtime to reassure their students that they are not like Chicago—that protection from emotional harm is a paramount goal—Chodosh has committed his own institution to the principles of free and open inquiry. Indeed, Chodosh's letter actually improves upon the Chicago statement: it clarifies that there is no contradiction between permitting unlimited free speech and asking for civil discourse.
The Chicago letter drew criticism for appearing to prohibit trigger warning and safe spaces, which would actually violate professors' rights. The administration later clarified that academics were free to use trigger warnings, they just wouldn't be required to do so. Claremont avoided this ambiguity entirely.
We encourage our professors to challenge our students intellectually," wrote Chodosh and Dean of the Faculty Peter Uvin. "We teach sensitive material. We do not mandate trigger warnings. We invite controversial speakers. We accord these rights to our students as well, whether they agree or disagree with faculty, administrators, or one another."
The letter goes on to note that such a commitment to free speech is, by its very nature, inclusive:
To benefit fully from the free exchange of challenging ideas, we must ensure that all people with different viewpoints, experiences, and analyses are included in our conversations. We protect the freedom of association as an individual and collective right. We reject exclusion and ad hominem attacks as barriers to learning. All of us—students, faculty, and staff—must commit to high standards of civility, respect, and appreciation for differences. All of us must value and support one another in challenging ourselves to analyze issues from many sides, to develop rigorous tools of intellectual inquiry, and to cultivate the habits of mind of an educated citizen.
Chodosh and Uvin also write that freedom of speech and diversity of opinion are "foundational" for Claremont McKenna.
"Both the faculty and our Board of Trustees have endorsed the University of Chicago's Principles of Free Expression as consistent with our own," they observe.
Claremont's president and dean deserve praise for refusing to promise their students safety from offensive ideas—thereby treating students with the respect they deserve. All institutions of higher learning should strive to follow this example.
Read the full letter below.
Dear All:
In recent days, we have seen much debate about free expression on our campuses, in part provoked by a letter from the Dean of Students at the University of Chicago to incoming students. Some have asked about CMC's position.
Freedom of speech and diversity of opinion are foundational to the mission of the College. Both the faculty and our Board of Trustees have endorsed the University of Chicago's Principles of Free Expression as consistent with our own.
We encourage our professors to challenge our students intellectually. We teach sensitive material. We do not mandate trigger warnings. We invite controversial speakers. We accord these rights to our students as well, whether they agree or disagree with faculty, administrators, or one another.
Our new Campus Resource Center is equally resolute in its commitment to inclusivity, openness, and pluralism. To quote from its charter:
First, the Center will be inclusive and open to all, regardless of background, identity, viewpoint, or values. It will aspire to be inviting to all students and to actively create opportunities for the broadest possible range of students to learn.
…
Second, … the Center will be dedicated to the principle of pluralism in thought, beliefs, and perspectives. It will not institutionalize a single way of thinking, but will instead reflect the core values of the college in focusing on complex issues in ways that are thoughtful, critical, respectful, and interdisciplinary.
This is the work of the Athenaeum. This is the mission of our institutes. This is the purpose of our upcoming dialogue event (You. Me. Together CMC.). This is what happens in our classes, our residential life, and throughout our student experience. This is what we have done since our founding seventy years ago, and it remains the bedrock of our work today.
Very best,
Hiram and Peter
Hiram E. Chodosh, President
Peter Uvin, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty

Hopefully administrators like Chodosh and Uvin got full buy-in from their board and faculty, otherwise I'm sure there's a bus waiting to use them for traction.
My last pay check was $9500 working 12 hours a week online. My sisters friend has been averaging 15k for months now and she works about 20 hours a week. I can't believe how easy it was once I tried it out. This is what I do... http://www.14earnpath.com
Says a lot about where things stand. There shouldn't be a need to explain or defend what should be obvious. Goes to show how much space sensitive, ignorant and shrill dumbasses can take up.
But what if somebody says something I don't like?
You know, you're really starting to annoy me.
Bitch slap them
Literally or figuratively?
"Foundational"?
Even my spellchecker says that's a made-up word.
English, motherfucker- do you speak it?
Really?
It's in the OED with a usage example all the way from 1683.
I'm with TLPB here it should be 'Foundationesque'
What about "foundationish"?

I commend these colleges for rejecting trigger warnings. But I have a feeling that school lawyers advised them to nip the problem in the bud. These policies are just lawsuits and controversies waiting to happen. They lose funding if enrollment drops (I could be wrong on this) and the wealthy white alumni might close their purse. They can what's happening at Mizzou.
Oh, and you can't try to fill empty seats by accepting more international students. Not in the age of Trump.
Mizzou didn't lose enrollment and funding over a lack of trigger warnings. They lost both over SJWs gone wild and grievance run amok. And the university doubled down on the stupid over the summer with a series of indoctrination sessions that likely scared off more students than they attracted.
President Dean, of the Dean College, on trigger warnings:
"Not only do we not mandate trigger warnings, we prohibit them. If you don't think you can make it through college without trigger warnings, don't come here.
Thank you. That is all."
Is this the year Dean College finally makes it to the Big Dance?

I think of Dean Moriarty.
The letter goes on to note that such a commitment to free speech is, by its very nature, inclusive:
To benefit fully from the free exchange of challenging ideas, we must ensure that all people with different viewpoints, experiences, and analyses are included in our conversations.
You seriously don't know how this works? "Inclusive" and "free speech" are mutually exclusive. Ensuring that "all people with different
viewpoints, experiences, and analyses are included" in the conversation demands that those with the loudest voices be made to sit down and shut up. "Free speech" really means only those with the loudest voices get heard. And we all know who has the loudest voices - rich straight white males who vote Republican.
And by "loudest voices" I don't necessarily mean decibel-level loud, I mean voices that can most clearly be heard and understood - like if you use logic and reasoning and facts and intelligence and shit like that, well, you're using an unfair advantage to dominate the conversation and you need to shut the hell up and let the stupid people have the floor.
OED? What's that, some kind of hair tonic?
Is this part of your shtick? Or are you serious?
Is that the dictionary that failed to read Alexander Pope's poem properly and fucked up the meaning of "bemuse"? Fuck those fucks.
I think you're bewildered.
Are you down with OED?
Yes, I believe we are acquainted.
I've been given to understand that all the members of this domicile are acquainted with OED.

No, that was Barbara Billingsley.
Not bewitched or bothered?
Oedipus is sort of an awkward name among friends, so mostly he goes by Oed.
Ah, the famous Mr. Oed.
And his friend, Mr. Og.
So, how long before this school and U of C apologize for their sins and transgressions and beg forgiveness from the Holy gods of PC righteousness? A week? A couple days?
Not sure that will happen. I think that people are sick of universities groveling to the SJWs, and administrators are looking at what happened to mizzou.

OT, but I haven't had much posting time lately. Has there been a libertarian moment yet and what about Trump? I see 3 articles in a row and nothing about Trump. This is a disturbing trend, I'm gonna cancel my subscription.
Less Trump does seem to be a trend lately. Which is nice.
Give it a day or two - nobody's talking about Trump because he hasn't said anything crazy lately and that's the only way they'll talk about him. As long as he's being "presidential", they aren't to say anything that will draw attention to the fact that he's behaving rationally. Since all Trump cares about is that they're talking about Trump, he'll snap out of it and give them what they want as soon as he realizes nobody wants to hear boring old sober Trump, they want wild and crazy drunken idiot Trump.
(I can't believe the number of people who gnash their teeth over the way every time there's some big news about the latest evil thing Hillary's done or said, there's Trump doing something stupid to distract attention from the Hillary news. Trump's not doing that because he's stupid or because he's secretly trying to make sure Hillary wins, he's doing that because he's an egomaniac and he doesn't care why they're paying attention to Hillary, he just wants them to stop and pay attention to him. If Hillary held a press conference to announce that she was secretly a Muslim and the Clinton Foundation was founded with the express purpose of financing the 9/11 hijackers, Trump would interrupt the presser by leaping up on stage to bite the head off a live puppy just to make sure he got his fair share of press.)
There may be something to your analysis...
Hmm... Your ideas are intriguing to me, and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
I think its a little ridiculous that we find ourselves praising and celebrating university presidents for making statements about "Free Speech and the Exchange of Ideas" etc....
..... that would have been considered boilerplate platitudes 20 years ago, completely disposable and taken for granted.
Of course college is about 'being challenged, and confronting ideas'. Of course we should advocate inclusiveness and pluralism. "Duh".
Its actually the *lack* of rhetoric about 'marginalized communities' and 'safe spaces' which makes it at all notable.
To a great extent, the history of courage is the history of standing up for the obvious.
That may be a quote from someone, but if not I claim it.
Example: Today even the neo-Confederates deplore slavery (and blame it on Yankees).
Try denouncing slavery too loudly in, say, 1850, and you're a fanatic.
Your analogy /example isn't quite right, and i'm not sure it helps the quote any.
In your case, what was "obvious" became so with time.
In my observation, what *used* to be obvious (""ideas aren't harmful"/"speech isn't violence") has become less so with time.
I think a number of the social-justice types would probably assert that their own case re: regarding the importance of "putting shackles on free-speech in the name of empowering marginalized communities" (or however they articulate it) is the 'obvious' thing that history has overlooked.
Try denouncing SJWs and stress triggers or whatever the fuck and you're a fanatic. Around millennials and old Gen Zers anyway.
Or the history of courage is fighting back when it is tough to do so.
Tomatos- tomatoes
I think it's a facile adherence to appearances - if it takes a strong man to admit his weaknesses then I'll prove how strong I am by doing nothing but blubbering about how weak I am. There's something to be said about being self-aware enough to admit your flaws, but doing nothing but criticizing your flaws and never once admitting there's anything admirable whatsoever about anything about yourself is not self-awareness. It's just a way to be smug about just how damn self-aware you are. Yes, racism and sexism and euro-centrism and all the other ism's are some minor problems within American culture, but they are not The Worstest Thing Evvvar! OMG! and saying they are isn't a way to draw attention to how admirably self-aware you are, it's just a way to draw attention to how incredibly stupid you are. America still has a big pile of good on the debit side of the ledger and ignoring all that is just as ignorant as claiming America has no flaws whatsoever.

Top 10 Reasons Not to Vote for Constitution Party Candidate Darrell Castle [multiple pages]
"1. Immigration [would ban immigration until "border is secured."...
"2. Gay Rights [he's not a fan]...
"3. Separation of Church and State [his party believes gay "marriage" contradicts divine law; party platform acknowledges Jesus and says Founders were Christians, party seeks "to restore American jurisprudence to its Biblical foundations and to limit the federal government to its Constitutional boundaries."]...
"4. Obscenity and Pornography [the Constitution Party is to pornographers what Gary Johnson is to Christian bakers]...
"5. Death Penalty [supports it despite hypocritically defending the rights of unborn babies and opposing following the Dutch down the path to euthanasia]...
"6. Free Trade [the party is protectionist and Castle opposes TPP]...
"7. Campaign Speech and Term Limits [against SuperPACs, term limits, and independent redistricting commissions]...
"8. Second Amendment Liability [believes "no corporation should be immune from the possibility that their product after being introduced into public commerce was defective, etc. and caused harm."]...
"9. Net Neutrality [seems to favor it]...
"10. Eminent Domain [here the article takes Castle's constitutional position that the government can take property, with compensation, for public *use,* and conflates it with Trump's position that property can be taken for a government-defined public *purpose.*]
[For #6, the platform can be interpreted as opposing trade agreements as subordinating U.S. interests to international corporations]
This is the guy you've been pushing?
Personally
1 - I'm pretty sure all except the hardcore of the hardcore anti-illegals on this board aren't stumping for closing the borders 'until they're secured' to legals.
2 - Gay rights are human rights. I'm pretty sure his opposition does not begin nor end there.
3 - Separation of church and state - and then is calling for us to go back to 'biblical jurisprudence'. Which a) is not the basis of common law and b) would make a 'separation' irrelevant.
4 - Yeah, no
5 - Yeah, no
6 - Opposes TPP is good, does it because its *too liberal* is horrible.
7 - Basically he's shilling for more government control of speech dealing with elections and government action. No thanks.
8 - Yeah, no
9 - That's as bad as #8.
10 - doesn't know what he's talking about.
Why are you pushing this guy? There's literally not a single position he has that is compatible with greater freedom and autonomy - even if we're not getting in whether or not it 'libertarian'.
It's like the Johnson supporters say - don't be a purist, he's better than the others.
It's not like the alternative is Rand or Ron Paul.
I've indicated that I don't think the article is playing fair. I linked the article because I wanted to show the worst that a (fairly biased) libertarian source might say against him.
I've said that I don't insist that the people I insist on calling "left-libertarians" should vote for Castle in preference to Johnson.
Having said that...and bearing in mind that he's not Rand Paul, here are some of the issues which make me prefer him to the fairly lame competition:
1) He's called for cutting the government 80%
2) His party's platform (and a linked resolution) calls for the *federal* government to considerably scale down the Drug War
3) His party's platform is against unconstitutional, undeclared wars
4) His party's platform wants the U.S. out of world trouble spots, rather than butting into war zones in budget-busting democracy crusades
5) His party's platform not only opposes the kind of new federal gun-control laws which Weld salivates over, but wants to get rid of many of the existing ones
6) His party's platform is for jury nullification
7) He's for the right to life of innocent human beings, even in the womb
8) His party wants to replace income, payroll and estate taxes with tariffs and excise taxes
9) His party wants to cut spending, balance the budget, and ultimately pay of the federal debt and privatize Social Security
10) His party opposes abuses committed in the name of the war on terrorism.
His stance on eminent domain is the same as that of the Constitution - permitted "when the seizure is necessary for public use and when fair market value is paid to the property owner."
And I grade on a curve for a Protestant party - so long as they think the Bible supports a proper reading of the Constitution, then they're light-years ahead of the "Jesus wants me to raise your taxes" or "Jesus wants another war" parties.
And here's some reasons I'm skeptical of Johnson/Weld
1) Nazi/gay cakes
2) Hillary is a great kid (Weld)
3) New gun control laws would be awesome (Weld)
4) We need more Breyers on the Supreme Court, ha ha I take it back
5) Libertarian or no libertarian, we need a new federal jobs program for black people because that worked so well in the past (Weld)
6) Burka ban - take it off, baby, no just kidding you can put it back on
7) abortion!
8) Planned Parenthood funding!
9) lol Trump is a nazi
10) I want to make sweet, passionate love to the CPD, I'm sure they'll return my calls

I pray you recover full health and get back to posting here in full comfort.
Wait, you and Warty both received hernia surgeries? Coincidence or something more sinister?
You haven't figured it out yet huh?
My wife just had a direct inguinal hernia operation last week, and learned these are quite unusual for women.
She's not sure if she should be proud she survived a man's surgery, or just to continue to be unhappy about all the pain she continues to have.
Get well soon. I know second-handedly what you are going through.
Going for a two-fer, here: Inguinal last year, Umbilical in a few weeks.
Speaking of the latter, by the way, I've developed quite the compassion for those with permanent 'outies'. By now, I've grown used to the awkward glances (by friends & strangers alike) down at the minor, but noticeable protrusion in my abdomen. I can definitely say I won't miss it.

I dunno, mining the most recent Clinton lies is amusing.
From the AP feed:
"WASHINGTON (AP) ?Hillary Clinton told the FBI she relied on her staff not to send emails containing classified information to the private email server she used as secretary of state.
[...]
The latest developments highlight competing liabilities for Clinton. Either she made a conscious effort to prevent a full public accounting of her tenure at State or she was nonchalant about decisions with national security consequences and risks.
[...]
The FBI report details steps taken by Clinton's staff that appear intended to hamper the recovery of deleted data, including smashing her old Blackberry smartphones with a hammer and using special software to wipe the hard drive of a server she had used.
[...]
Clinton said she did not pay attention to the level of classification "and took all classified information seriously," according to the FBI."
http://www.marshallindependent.....1&nav=5029
Probably hitting the limit on fair use, but it is amusing. I'm doing my best to spread it around; you might also.
Yes, we know = the "either incompetent, or malicious" / "either a liar, or unbelievably stupid" conundrum. It *has* to be one or the other, and both result in conclusions the media would rather avoid.
Amazing how often it comes up with politicians.
The way the NYT is playing it is simply to pretend that none of it was ever really 'serious' anyway.
i.e. 'own up that 'mistakes were made', but they were errors of an honest person without serious consequence'.
Even though other people have been and still current are being thrown in jail for similar misconduct; and that no one has even remotely attempted to measure what potential negative consequences might have already/or will come about as a result of her absurd contempt for inf. security-protocol.
The AP story touches on something which i think the media has entirely overlooked so far
Here's the thing: the FBI/Justice Department? would only grant immunity if they *already believed that a crime had been committed*... because - what are you providing immunity *from*? There has to be an assumed criminal act which the person is connected to in some way.
And if the information which Pagliano was going to provide in exchange for that immunity? would be expected to provide some actual 'otherwise impossible-to-gain' evidence which would aid in the prosecution of that crime.
It seems to me that it raises questions which no one ever asked - what exactly was he exchanging for immunity? And what crime did he believe he was connected to such that he needed immunity?
there's also this lovely detail =
and you still have hordes of people insisting indignantly that this is all a 'witch hunt'
"The FBI report details steps taken by Clinton's staff that appear intended to hamper the recovery of deleted data, including smashing her old Blackberry smartphones with a hammer and using special software to wipe the hard drive of a server she had used."

Did you read about his congressional testimony, re: pilot's pay?
No, is it worth reading? I plan on being sober for the next 3 hours.
And the Stanford-KSU game isn't even interesting anymore.
Sorry, Clinton trolling elsewhere.
Anyhow, he seems a truly a wonderful pilot, and as a policy advisor, he seems a truly wonderful pilot. At one point, when he was griping about the measly pay, he really said something very like this:
'Holy cow! I know pilots who are flying now just because they ENJOY it!', as if that were some sort of condemnation of the pay.
I'm sure if congress, in its wisdom, fixed pilots pay 'way up there, they could get Sully back to gripe about the amateur pilots now occupying the left seat, since they only want the filthy lucre...
(Stanfoo is on premium here, and much as I'd like to watch McAffery (sp?), I'm not paying Comcast a nickle for what I'd watch twice a year)

I wonder if she'll have us join the EU?
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2.....izens.html
In her defense, the U.S. belongs in the EU just as much as Turkey belongs in NATO.
From the article, it appears that the EU wants to tell you what to do even if you're not a member.
"So you're here to fix my cable?"
"Ya. I am expert."
17 is the Not.
Funny, isn't it? If the CURRENT secretary of state couldn't recall this stuff, you would ask for their resignation. She just wants to be President.
I'm with her!
That's how I just got my new job. I told them that I couldn't remember shit, got at least 4 Americans killed and I am married to a philandering womanizer. They asked me why I should be the CEO and I said.... Vagina!
Hired on the spot. No recount necessary in Florida. Boo yah!

Top of the range? Is it really nice or does it also fit on the stove?
I think the 'spam' note is working. Been clicking on it from time to time (and others too?); the amount seems to be decreasing (anecdotal).
In case you wanted an excellent take down of Vox's Epipen BS article.

Please link that tomorrow morning; it'll get lost tonight like Clinton'a latest lies. I'm sacking out...
Night. Will do.
Don't you love cover bands? Well, you won't after seeing this.

I think a pre-emptive apology would be inadequate for this atrocity, but at least nobody's looking at my links at this hour

Man, if anyone actually checks the links I gave, I will be the most hated person since HItler.
I am tempted to click some of those. My fucking dog woke me up and now I can't fall back asleep.
Woah,
Nice piece of well crafted content

OT: I'm at a point in my life where I think I need to get a bachelor's degree and settle on an actual career. The idea of a finance degree popped into my head. I definitely enjoy studying economic issues. I'd like some opinions on whether or not that's worth it.
In general, what kind of jobs can someone get with a bachelor's in finance? Is it a degree that usually pays for itself?
And how safe are those jobs from automation or computer technology? I read that a lot of those jobs are analysis, which will probably be eliminated as computer algorithms get more and more sophisticated.
