Black Lives Matter, but So Does the Truth
Activists alienate potential allies in the fight against police abuse by perpetuating myths.
On Tuesday night delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia heard from the mothers of seven African Americans whose deaths have fueled the Black Lives Matter movement. Their stories illustrate the movement's legitimate grievances as well as the myths and bogus arguments that alienate potential allies.
Four of the seven deaths happened after encounters with police. But in the best-known case, the 2014 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the Justice Department found that the evidence supported the officer, Darren Wilson, who said Brown punched him and tried to grab his gun.
In the other three cases, police either clearly or arguably used excessive force. The clearest example of unnecessary force involved Sandra Bland, who was found dead, apparently by suicide, in a Texas jail last year, three days after Trooper Brian Encinia pulled her over for changing lanes without signaling.
Dashcam video of the traffic stop showed Encinia lost his temper and needlessly escalated the situation, leading to an arrest that should never have happened. Encinia was fired after a grand jury indicted him for lying in his report on the incident.
Eric Garner died of a heart attack in 2014 after he was tackled by New York City cops trying to arrest him for selling untaxed cigarettes. Video of the encounter showed that Garner, whose death was classified as a homicide, repeatedly complained that he could not breathe. A grand jury declined to indict Daniel Pantaleo, an officer who used what looked like a prohibited chokehold, in connection with Garner's death.
In 2014 a Milwaukee police officer, Christopher Manney, took out his baton after Dontre Hamilton resisted a pat-down in a public park. Hamilton grabbed the baton and hit Manney in the neck, and Manney shot Hamilton 14 times. Although the district attorney concluded that Manney had acted in self-defense, the police chief fired him because the pat-down that culminated in the shooting was not justified by reasonable suspicion.
Two other cases highlighted at the convention on Tuesday involved unarmed black teenagers shot by private citizens. But the details of the incidents were very different, and so were the legal outcomes.
In 2013 George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida, was acquitted of manslaughter and second-degree murder in the 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Physical evidence and witness testimony supported Zimmerman's claim that he acted in self-defense after Martin knocked him down, pinned him, and began knocking his head against the pavement.
In 2014, by contrast, Michael Dunn was convicted of murdering 17-year-old Jordan Davis after an argument over loud music at a Jacksonville gas station in 2012. Dunn's implausible self-defense claim was based on a shotgun that was never recovered and no one else saw.
Contrary to what gun control supporters typically claim, neither of these cases hinged on Florida's "stand your ground" self-defense law, which eliminated the duty to retreat for people attacked in public places. Even in states that impose a duty to retreat, Zimmerman and Dunn could have mounted the same legal defenses with the same results.
Gun control supporters also have latched onto the seventh case mentioned on Tuesday night: the 2013 shooting of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton at a Chicago park by a teenager who mistook one of her companions for a rival gang member. While Hadiya's death was senseless and horrifying, none of the new gun restrictions that Democrats advocate in her name would have prevented it.
The use of excessive force by police, regardless of the victim's race, should trouble everyone. So should the racially skewed experiences with cops documented by scholars such as Harvard economist Roland Fryer and University of North Carolina political scientist Frank Baumgartner.
Activists undermine these important causes when they ignore plausible self-defense claims, perpetuate misconceptions about "stand your ground" laws, and push a divisive gun control agenda. As President Obama likes to say, equal treatment under the law is "an American issue," or at least it should be.

St. Peter probably found space for Eric and Sandra. He laughed his ass off when Michael and Trayvon tried to get in.
I'm sure that wherever Trayvon is now, his purple drank cup runneth over.
The end justifies the means.
The intent justifies the end.
No mention of Trump in this article, needs a rewrite.
Two nights down and the Donkey convention has been every bit the disaster the RNC was. With so many mentally challenged individuals on both sides, this election is nothing if not hugely entertaining.
Its telling when the Libertarian convention is the least fustercluckish of the three, particularly when you consider John McAfee and Daryl Perry were on stage.
How was the RNC a disaster? Leaving any antipathy you might have for nominee aside, the only thing I can think of was the Ted Cruz speech that was roundly booed, even by his own delegates. Not really rising to the level of disaster.
The Melania plagarism thing was, at a minimum, bad optics (I think it was sabotage personally), numerous high profile Republicans skipping the convention entirely; the voice vote thingy where several non-Trump people stormed out (I think Ken Cuccinelli was among them), etc. It sounded like a bit of a show.
Comparing to the RNC of 2012 or 2008, or the most recent DNC, this years convention went off without a hitch. Everyone I know that attended said they were surprised at how much of a non-shitshow it was. They were disappointed because they attended solely to bear witness to a shitshow.
The Melania plagiarism was a win for the RNC, diverting a news cycle from the antics of the NeverTrumpers and putting Melania in the spotlight.
The rest of it, possibly not including Cruz, was too inside-baseball to leave an impression on the public.
The DNC antics may be in the same inside-baseball zone.
But, watching apparatchiks twist in the wind and commit fratricide is its own reward.
"The Melania plagiarism was a win for the RNC, diverting a news cycle from the antics of the NeverTrumpers and putting Melania in the spotlight."
that's what might've happened had they not turned it into a course in how not to handle an simple political problem. and then they let ted cruz speak.
"But in the best-known case, the 2014 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the Justice Department found that the evidence supported the officer, Darren Wilson, who said Brown punched him and tried to grab his gun."
Let's not forget that it was the big lie from Brown's partner who pushed the "hands up don't shoot" narrative and got the whole BLM movement underway.
From where Brown turned back towards Wilson he made it 21 feet. The audio of the shots last 3.5 seconds. That means Brown was moving at 4 miles per hour. Hardly a "full charge" as Wilson testilied. Not to mention Wilson was outside with plenty of room to maneuver. He could have easily evaded Brown until help arrived.
How does the time it took to fire the shots directly correlate with how fast Brown was moving? Unless you know precisely at what point in the charge Wilson started firing, and at precisely what distance Brown started the charge, it is irrelevant.
Distance divided by time equals velocity. Wilson said he only shot when Brown was moving towards him.
You're making other assumptions.
1) What if Brown had been zig-zagging while running towards Wilson? I don't know about you, but if someone's pointing a gun at me, I'm gonna be zigzagging whether I'm running away or towards the gun. And yes, I have been in defensive pistol classes where they simulate such situations. We saw videos of actual shootings, and people do zig-zag, even without training. Hell, even antelope instinctually zig-zag when being chased by a predator.
If Brown had been zig-zagging while advancing on Wilson, he would have covered more total distance without necessarily traveling towards Wilson more than 21 feet measured in a straight line. That would mean Brown would have had to have run faster than your calculated 4mph too.
2) You totally left out momentum and acceleration/deceleration. Brown, being quite massive, would have had to have burst out running to bring his massive body up to some peak speed, then he would have had to have decelerated from that peak speed until finally stopping (whether alive or dead at this point, physics requires that he decelerate).
So to Wilson, this looks like a bursting charge, not an average of 4mph smoothly averaged over the 21ft.
You don't know and there's no reliable information available about how far Brown got coming back before Wilson started firing.
Considering the whole story I'd have shot him. (Trayvon Martin too. And I wouldn't have apologized to his mother.)
Your suggestion that Wilson just run in circles until help arrives is nothing short of silly.
Just on the subject of the Michael Dunn case: There was a some suspicious activity after the shooting when the victim and his friends drove away from the scene which appears to strongly hint at the possibility they did in fact pull a gun on Dunn.
For example even though the victim was bleeding to death in the back of the car, they did not call for an ambulance. Instead they drove to a dark area of a parking lot and called an uncle. After 5 or 10 minutes they eventually called for an ambulance.
There were a few other things that happened during that time and I recommend anyone interested in the case to watch that part of the trial.
Driving away from the scene after someone in your car gets shot (and the shooter keeps shooting at you) is proof that they pulled a gun? What?
Also, Dunn didn't contact the police after the shooting, and his own girlfriend testified that he never mentioned seeing a gun to her that day or the following day. So that hardly makes him look like a virtuous citizen who acted in self-defense.
DNC parades out moms of:
.
A man who was justifiably killed by a cop (Michael Brown)
A boy who was justifiably killed by a racist Latino non-cop (Trayvon Martin)
A mentally disturbed woman who killed herself after a flagrantly abusive encounter with cop and unjust arrest (Sandra Bland)
A man who was brutally and mercilessly killed by cops enforcing an unjust law (Eric Garner)
A man who was murdered by a racist non-cop (Jordan Davis)
A mentally disturbed man who was killed by a cop abusing his authority (Dontre Hamilton)
A heroic boy (and cop's kid) who was killed by two juveniles (Blair Holt)
.
These cases have absolutely nothing in common except for the fact that the victims are black. I can't be the only person of color who is disgusted by this pandering.
.
Furthermore, the sole worthwhile point here was, in fact, the very one not made: the abuse and killing of civilians in our communities at the hands of the state. Instead, of course, we get the same thing we have always gotten from the Clintons: Moral panic over the involvement of young men of color in violent incidents; and an insulting and truly perverse call to "help us" and achieve "justice" for our communities by moving toward a police monopoly on firearms.
Democrats pandering....it's what they do!
Really well said.
Waitwaitwait...that's bordering on calling him "articulate", which, as we've recently found out, is racist as all hell. Not sure exactly what you're supposed to say when a black man says something insightful so clearly, but not THAT.
So can I call you a commenter of color? And if you're walking down the street, that would make you a pedestrian of color? As a person of non-color, I tend to agree that the BLM and the left are denigrating real victims of injustice by making the only prerequisate of martyrdom to be the person's of-colorness.
So can I call you a commenter of color?
Yeah, I don't see why not. Go to town, pal.
So, you're the color commentator?
LOL I always have, indeed, wondered whether this was a common on-set joke (or general societal joke; I was too young to have been aware) during the early days of broadcast booth integration. The color man was certainly (and pretty much is now) of course much more likely to be black than the play-by-play guy, owing to the ex-athlete pipeline.
everyone is of one color or another. White people aren't fucking translucent!

Nobody on that stage gives a flying fuck about solving any of the problems, real or imagined, touched on here. It's all signalling to each other how much they "care", while backstage they plot more power grabs.
Trayvon Martin? Hunh?!?!? How about thus "truth matters" thing?!?!
The OTHER part of the truth (Martin threw away the sword and the pistol by his side, before he died, and the cops never found it, bumbling fools that they were), but here is the REAL truth:
Martin went a fartin',
And he did ride,
With a sword and a pistol
By his side,
Lookin' for a "creepy ass cracker"
To help him eat his skittles,
So when he couldn't find his spittoon,
He spit instead in his shittooon,
And shit instead in his spittoon,
While the cow jumped over the moon,
And the dish snorted coke with a spoon,
And we'll all know the truth real soon!
You say that like it's a bad thing.
If the point of Black Lives Matter was to fight against police abuse, they're obviously doing it wrong. They wouldn't use criminals who got showing being criminals as their poster boys. They wouldn't make it all about race. They'd make it about police abuse of all people, with the most innocent and sympathetic victims they could find.
But if they wanted to sow racial division, they'd do exactly what they're doing.
Everything the Left does is for power. The purported aims are never the ends. BLM is sowing violence and racial division. Mission Accomplished!
The Democrat Party, using racism and Black pawns for a century and a half.

FTFY
"who got shot being criminals as their poster boys."
I think this one thing has more to do with the human inability to admit being wrong more than anything else. Black guy gets shot by a cop, instantly, before any details come in, people either side with the victim or the cop. If evidence shows that the victim was a criminal and the shooting justified, the side that sided with him before any evidence came in will ignore that evidence. If evidence shows the victim innocent of wrongdoing and the shooting unjustified, the side that backed the cop initially will ignore that.
People make up their minds rather quickly and refuse to budge from their initial position.
Also, I think the "poster boy" thing has more to do with how much the media covers things. And they like to cover the controversial cases. Most BLM types I know get outraged about the clear cut cases as well, but those don't generate the same ratings and attention.
A diner that I like to go to put up a large "Blue Lives Matter" sign. They aren't getting my business anymore.
My vet had a large sign that read "Nine Lives Matter." They'll probably keep geting my business.
That's funny.

The puppycide people need to go with that hashtag.
I wouldn't dine there if they put up a Blue Lives Matter or a Black Lives Matter sign. I have enough hate for both groups to go around.

Black Lives Matter, but So Does the Truth
Oh, I dunno. Reason's been pretty consistently peddling the lies.
Blacks (but not Asians) fail at school: bad schools.
Blacks (but not Asians) get arrested: bad police.
Blacks (but not Asians) go to prison: bad courts.
This is the silliest one:
Black-on-black crime (but not Asian-on-anybody) : systemic racism
That and claiming the drug war is bad "because it's racist" is silly too. It's bad because it's an affront to personal liberty and destroys lives and families that finds themselves on the drug war battlefield, regardless of race. Saying that's it's racist because more blacks are affected by it is like saying laws against murder, and nearly every other class of crime, is racist because it disproportionately affects blacks.
Yes, but if you're trying to reach an audience that doesn't give a fuck about personal liberty, pushing the race angle might actually get them (guilty feeling white progs) to reverse their stance on the drug war.
Probably not, but I see why they do it.
Or be entirely counterproductive to the issue at hand. Like people who were claiming that Black Lives Matter is doing a great service to raise awareness about police brutality. Yet all they've done is to raise the issue of how white people are racist killers of black people and results in cops getting even more sympathy and protection. BLM has effectively become the standard bearer of opposition to police brutality and unaccountability, but because they're so damn loathsome, it's working against the cause.
I don't know if it's counterproductive (in the case of the war on drugs), I imagine it's probably neutral. BLM has definitely been counterproductive though, if you believe their mission was to shed light on police brutality. I don't think it's too far fetched to imagine it's at least become a ploy by the Clinton organization to drum up the black vote before November.
Considering that plenty of the left think that the world is overpopulated and needs culling, I think you give them too much credit on actually caring about people. The Drug War is rather bipartisan for the most part, so it's not like you can heap all the blame on Democrats specifically, but thinking that they actually give a single fuck about the people it harms is simply untrue. They like to use those people as political footballs. If anything, it helps keep them in a steady supply of footballs. Why kill the Golden Goose?
That's my take on the politicians at least.
You would hope that your everyday person might be a little more caring. I'm probably too naive in that regard.
I take it as "the drug war is bad, and even worse when you realize its one of the last vestiges of Jim Crow."
Now that would be a fair point. Like minimum wages laws and gun control laws in that regard.
Wow, you mean there are BLUE people now? Whodda thunk it!
Being against racism means never having to say you're sorry.
Paging Rosa Parks: Black LIves Matter protestor segregates white and black reporters--tells the the white ones to get to the back.
http://heatst.com/politics/tak.....ps-at-dnc/
It's like they're deaf to history or something....
"White media get to the back! Black media come to the front!" shouted an organizer with a bullhorn.
You can't fool *me*, Wizard. That's from The Onion.
Our political system has become one big reductio ad absurdum.
I'm glad I wasn't there, I'd have said, "*prove* that I'm white!"
I mean, if one's race is a crime, then one should enjoy the presumption of innocence.
Only the police get a presumption of innocence. Innocent until proven innocent.
Well considering that plenty of people seem to honestly believe that Lincoln was a Democrat and Republicans were the party of the KKK and Jim Crow I'd say they aren't deaf to history, they're simply completely ignorant of it.
Actually, the dynamic I see with progs is that history is secondary to "The Narrative" wherein everything all fits together in a neat, self-fulfilling, self-explanatory, self-supporting way.
And when historical fact (or just plain current reality) contradicts said Narrative, the insults come out, by which your assertion that such-and-such a thing is factual, or true, is invalidated because of your status as a "racist, bigot, ignorant hate-filled white male, etc., etc.
So, no, history does not matter to them even if they are made aware of it.
For instance, "The Crusades were bad, and proof of the racist, colonialist, violent nature of Europeans". Point out that they were, in no small part, a response to Arabic incursions (flat-out military invasions!) into Europe. You won't get an argument about history, or facts, you'll get "ISLAMOPHOBE!!". Because narrative, nothing more complex is allowed.
Actually Parks WAS sitting in the back. What she did was refuse to give up her seat to a white man. It's amazing no one gets that story correct.
Activists undermine their cause when they ignore plausible self-defense claims, perpetuate misconceptions about "stand your ground" laws, and push a divisive gun control agenda
This presumes the people they're trying to influence give a crap about any of those concerns.
They're still pimping the Michael Brown case?
And they had Holder speak at the convention (autoplay). Yet it was Holder's department which concluded that there simply was no basis for prosecuting the cop in that case, and that the witnesses who said Brown attacked the cop were more credible than the "hands up don't shoot" witnesses.
Oh, and Holder said in his speech: "As the brother of a retired police officer, I am profoundly aware that an attack on a police officer anywhere is an attack on our entire society."
Yet he shared a convention with the mother of a man who, based on his department's own investigation, attacked a police officer.
And he praised the nominee who pushes this bullshit.
Why do you insist on fucking with the narrative? Get in line, move along.
Probably because those witnesses were going off a story concocted by Brown's accomplice in the strong-arm robbery from ten minutes prior. That and those witnesses testimony is objectively proved false by the fact that Brown's skin was found on the hammer of the gun stemming from his attempt to wrestle control of the weapon away and the gun shot that went off in the squad car.
If someone pointed a gun at you at close range would you try to grab it?
not unless I wanted to get shot
Sure. But that says nothing about whom the aggressor was and that fact explicitly refutes the claim that he never got close to the cop, as the lying witnesses claimed.
The DOJ can only prosecute for cases of civil rights violations. If you were standing at a car window and the driver pulled a gun on you wouldn't you try to grab it?
You are assuming facts not actually in evidence.
Wilson didn't pull his gun in the car?
Just in time for the DNC Convention:
The Latest: Prosecutors drop charges in Freddie Gray case
http://bigstory.ap.org/c5ab8c2.....6d9948f908
Don't worry, the left won't exploit it for political gain.
Oh great! Some soft-on-crime democrat prosecuter decides drop charges against this Freddie Gray thug.
The truth does not matter. something like 90% of black are killed by other blacks. Obviously, blacks don't give a fuck about blacks.
Also, since black do such a bang up job of killing each other, they make being a white supremacist the easiest job in the world. One has to do nothing to get these miscreants to kill each other. I suppose one could drive down Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, down any inner sitter and throw out a pair of Air JOrdans just for shits and giggles.
Inner city blacks are just like muslims. They can't or won't assimilate to civilized society.
I'm really, really hoping this is sarcasm...
*Thumps sarcas-o-meter*
So? Most whites are killed by whites.
What BLM and a lot of other people including to some degree reason don't get is that we don't have a police shooting problem, we have an accountability and credibility problem.
The public doesn't accept the results of these cases because while the police may not be out conducting a murder campaign against the public, they are guilty of all kinds of lesser misconduct and are almost never held accountable for it. Thanks to the infamous blue wall of silence and the power of police unions, police in this country commit all kinds of lesser forms of misconduct with virtual impunity. The public sees this and notices it.
We are focusing too much on shootings. Shootings are messy and even the worst and most corrupt cop tries to avoid them. The problem is all of the other misconduct that is allowed to go on. Not only is that bad in itself, it also destroys the trust the community has in the police and gives police a sense of impunity, which makes them more likely to shoot someone in the first place. Fix the overall accountability problem and shootings will happen less often and when they do the public will be more likely to trust the results of the justice system. The worst thing we could do is just throw a few cops in jail regardless of the truth or any respect for due process in hopes of satiating the mob. And that seems to be more than anything what BLM wants.
I completely agree with this. I would also add that it's hard for people to respect the justice system when we continually send innocent people to jail based on eye witness testimony and jailhouse snitches.
Well observed, John.
Kelly Thomas' dad was there, right?

Our friends to the north have given us the greatest political ad of the new century. Needless to say, it caused a lot of people to become very butt hurt.
"[Note to all commenters with the initials "JC": Behave yourself.]"
Which of you has been posting on powerline blog?
Yeah, because that's what lesbians look like in real life.
It would defeat their point to use butch Lesbians I think, and I imagine if they had done that Lesbians would be offended that the company thought they were all bull dykes. Lose/Lose. I do note that none of the activists seemed to bat an eye at the actual message, they were just offended by the imagery, which tells you exactly how many fucks they actually give.
That is hilarious and awesome.
It's too bad the left will completely miss the point and bitch about "fetishizing lesbians for men's enjoyment" or whatever the fuck that twit was quoted as saying.
Anything to change the subject away from the fact that a designated victim group has barbaric views about gays that are a thousand times worse than anything these people ever bitch about.
In all fairness the old testament demands that you kill them just as emphatically as the Muslim faith, it's just that there was a reformation and Jesus wasn't a psychopath so that tends to mellow out that impulse in the modern era.
Lets not pretend there aren't Christians that would happily drag gay people to death behind their trucks.
And Jews, and Sikhs, and Hindus, and Satanists, and atheists. Homophobia is not restricted to the devout, and it would still be in society even without the influence of the Abrahamic religions.
And let's not pretend those Christians exist in numbers anywhere near the numbers of actual Muslim killers of homosexuals.
On Tuesday night delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia heard from the mothers of seven African Americans whose deaths have fueled the Black Lives Matter movement.
An interesting bookend to the mothers of people killed by illegal aliens at the RNC. Which was either (a) ignored by the DemOp Media (and, if memory serves, Reason) or (b) criticized as cheap emotionalism (a criticism oddly absent from coverage of the DNC).
I suspect the public has noticed the contrast despite the efforts of the court media to prevent them from doing so. At this point what does the DNC stand for other than lawlessness, corruption and making a fetish out of being a victim?
And I don't mean that as a snarky take on their message. That seems to be the message they want to give.
A good point Dean, I haven't seen that covered here. Interesting.
An interesting bookend to the mothers of people killed by illegal aliens at the RNC. Which was either (a) ignored by the DemOp Media (and, if memory serves, Reason)
Your comment is actually the first I've heard of this.
Eric Garner want selling loosies. He has sold them before, and that's why the cops recognized him and hassled him. But he wasn't selling any loosies that day. In fact, didn't he break up a fight that the cops responded to?
Eric Garner got completely fucked raw in that situation, and it really upsets me that his family wants anything to do with the same political party responsible for the very laws that led to his demise. I'm left wondering whether it is out of ignorance or a form of Stockholm Syndrome exhibited by people that have lost hope in any chance of changing their reality for the better.
And if memory serves me, you are correct - he wasn't accused of any such "crime" on the day he was killed.
Didn't we fight a war over bullshit tax stamps at one point?
Encouraging the abandonment of law and due process and steading chaos and mob rule is obviously not smart.
Hence, Obama and his fellow pimps are not smart. They are kneejerk prepubescent petulant imbeciles.
Don't underestimate them. They love the idea of mob rule. They just need to disarm the public first.
how come the fathers of these murdered blacks weren't invited to speak at the convention?
You misspelled "baby daddy".
have any members of the media tweeted that they'd like to beat these mothers to death like they did one of the mothers of the Benghazi victims at the RNC? Didn't think so.
Funny, no mention of Tamir Rice? Or would that imply an unwillingness to kill gun owners out of hand?
It's not about race. It's about power.

BLM's entire mission, strategy and tactic seems to be "protest". That just leaves a bunch of angry, frustrated people not knowing what to do next. Why would anybody want to have their name associated with that? But I doubt they care.
This sentence makes absolutely no sense:
"The clearest example of unnecessary force involved Sandra Bland, who was found dead, apparently by suicide"
When it comes to Garner, I feel like nobody has ever watched a single episode of Cops. Every fucking person being arrested complains about how their arm is broken and they can't breathe.
the larger problem is the 'black lives matter' movement is practically incompetent at expanding the size of its movement beyond the people who think exactly as they do. there are plenty of people who sympathize with their underlying premise, but don't like the slogan, examples, or some of the possible solutions put forth. you need those people though, otherwise it's just a movement that gives people an excuse to get angry.
