Why I Decided To Quit Medicine In Today's Healthcare Climate

I chose to study medicine for two main reasons: I am fascinated by the intricate complexities of the human body, both in health and disease; and because I was looking for a job that has a positive impact on people and society at large.

Let me start on a positive note: I still believe that medicine is one of the most noble professions, and that the world needs doctors that are passionate about what they do. Part of why I actually quit medicine is because a large chunk of my passion was destroyed by disillusion.

Now I do not want to sound overly dramatic, because I partly knew what I was getting into when I started medical school; however, it is the trend that I foresee for the future that made me eventually choose to quit. I think many people fail to realize how much the day-to-day job of a doctor has become pretty much that of an assembly line drone or paperwork monkey of sorts.

The image of the generalist physician that sees a very wide range of patients and treats the whole patient, and whatever ails them, is long gone. The reality of physician work is long hours, which of course isn't much different from consulting, but the truth is the romantic notion that most of this time is devoted to actually treating patients is false, and increasingly so.

You've heard many of them before, those statements about teachers and public schools that are said to be true but are just plain wrong. In their book, "50 Myths and Lies That Threaten America's Public Schools," authors David C. Berliner and Gene V. Glass addressed many of them, including:

* Merit pay is a good way to increase the performance of teachers.
* Subject matter knowledge is the most important asset a teacher can possess.
* Teachers are well paid.

You have also no doubt heard that teachers have it easy because they have summers off, and can go home in mid-afternoon when their students leave, and that they can get tenure and therefore are protected from ever being fired.

I don't think that going to work for 8.5 hours a day and having some followup at home is the brutal death march that teachers claim. Especially elementary school teachers. High school, where coaching and extracurricular sponsorship might genuinely keep you away from your family a couple nights a week and maybe some weekends is different. That's the entry level of a professional job, which teachers claim they have.

Then you have the close-to $1,000 mandatory step increase in salary each year. Less than 10 years in, you're making $50,000+ base salary. Not too shabby for being "underpaid".

And that's not even counting benefits, raises, time off, etc.

Being a teacher is definitely super stressful, but so are about a billion other jobs that take more time and pay you less.

Britain is still reeling from the shock of its Brexit referendum, in which the UK voted 52%-48% in favour of leaving the EU.

The people to blame for this shock are the pollsters, who consistently predicted a Remain majority before the final result, which went to Leave.

Now those pollsters have come up with an explanation for why they were wrong. The details are covered in a fascinating blog post by YouGov research director Anthony Wells. [?]

We're going to summarise Wells' analysis here but it's well worth reading the whole thing for the nitty-gritty stuff. Basically, Wells says, the pollsters got six things wrong:

Phone polls don't work anymore, and even online polls are inaccurate.[?]

Also, other than the crazy 55-45 (clear) outlier of a poll released on the day of the referendum (which could have, ironically, actually affected the result because voters are weird like that), the actual election result difference ended up being within the margin of error of the vast majority of polls going back weeks.

Gary Johnson and his Libertarians aren't an alternative

Steve Chapman's Thursday portrayal of the current Libertarian candidates as kinder and gentler misses the point. They're neither. Abolishing the departments of Education, Commerce and Housing and Urban Development would slash programs for special needs students in districts everywhere, damage export-oriented industries and businesses, and halt the only source of development of affordable housing in most communities. None of these would make our economy kinder or gentler ? or more prosperous.

And Gary Johnson's claim that most Americans are unwitting libertarians is not plausible. As a country, we have always had a minority that advocated libertarian ideas, but when forced to decide, a majority of us have always rejected them. The libertarians of 1787 opposed ratification of the Constitution ? but we ratified it. The libertarians of the Progressive Era opposed food and drug laws and child labor laws ? but they were passed. The libertarians of the 1930s opposed social security and unemployment insurance ? but now those programs are sacrosanct. No industrialized country has every prospered with a libertarian model of government. It's an idea that doesn't work in practice.
