In a rally with his delegates in Philadelphia, Bernie Sanders encouraged them to vote for Hillary Clinton. They booed him.

  • The FBI will be investigating who hacked the Democratic National Committee and provided thousands of internal emails to Wikileaks.
  • Donald Trump has received a decent post-convention poll bounce, now leading Clinton in a poll released today.
  • The Turkish government, having survived the coup attempt, is now cracking down on journalists.
  • Verizon is buying most of Yahoo for $4.8 billion. Verizon purchased AOL last year for $4.4 billion.
  • A college football player says he was stopped by police in Iowa while playing Pokemon Go and had guns pointed at him because he matched the description of a man suspected of robbing a nearby bank.
  • The political circus of the Republican National Convention and now the Democratic National Convention has distracted us all from some much more important news: namely, what sort of cool movie trailers were shown for the first time at the San Diego Comic Convention. See them aggregated here.

Finally, all that home team booing Philadelphians do can be put to good use.

Yeah, this 'coup attempt' reeks of 'political ploy by Erdogan'.
But the 61 tactical nukes at Incirlik are very troubling. Very troubling indeed.

      1. R C Dean   9 years ago

Starting with, WTF are we doing with tactical nukes on the ground in Turkey?

If we just hafta deliver a tactical nuke in that neighborhood, don't we have options that don't involve "loading it onto a plane in Turkey"?

          1. Mr Drew   9 years ago

As I understand it, he needs authorization codes because the dude or dudette who is actually arming the device (or the vehicle for the device) will need to input them.

Why I Decided To Quit Medicine In Today's Healthcare Climate

I chose to study medicine for two main reasons: I am fascinated by the intricate complexities of the human body, both in health and disease; and because I was looking for a job that has a positive impact on people and society at large.

Let me start on a positive note: I still believe that medicine is one of the most noble professions, and that the world needs doctors that are passionate about what they do. Part of why I actually quit medicine is because a large chunk of my passion was destroyed by disillusion.

Now I do not want to sound overly dramatic, because I partly knew what I was getting into when I started medical school; however, it is the trend that I foresee for the future that made me eventually choose to quit. I think many people fail to realize how much the day-to-day job of a doctor has become pretty much that of an assembly line drone or paperwork monkey of sorts.

The image of the generalist physician that sees a very wide range of patients and treats the whole patient, and whatever ails them, is long gone. The reality of physician work is long hours, which of course isn't much different from consulting, but the truth is the romantic notion that most of this time is devoted to actually treating patients is false, and increasingly so.

    1. Ted S.   9 years ago

Single-payer legal care. Because every regulation we put on doctors, we ought to put on lawyers too.

      1. (((Renegade)))   9 years ago

I actually think that there's an excellent case to be made for socializing the legal "profession."

        1. Bra Ket   9 years ago

I've always thought that would be poetic justice.

Unfortunately though, considering their job description basically boils down to "profit by manipulating the system", it would probably end up as a horrible example of regulatory capture and enrich them greatly.

          1. db   9 years ago

Yeah, good thing we dodged that bullet.

    2. Chipper Morning Wood   9 years ago

If you are fascinated by the intricacies of the human body, go into medical research, not into clinical practice. Clinical practice is routine diabetes management that a trained monkey could do.

      1. Bra Ket   9 years ago

But somehow treating patients is somehow vastly more prestigious and admired than research. Oh I know why, practicing doctors make vastly more money.

    3. The Last American Hero   9 years ago

I thought it was having cool hair and banging hot interns as shown in ER, Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, and that crappy sex comedy about doctors without borders.

Turns out it's treating the umpteenth case of chicken pox this year, arguing with a mom about vaccinations because of something noted physician Jenny McCarthy said on Oprah, trying to treat patients for STD's when they insist they are monogamous, and talking down your overly excited patients because of something Dr. Oz said.

      Boo hoo.

'All these teachers do is whine' ? and other myths

You've heard many of them before, those statements about teachers and public schools that are said to be true but are just plain wrong. In their book, "50 Myths and Lies That Threaten America's Public Schools," authors David C. Berliner and Gene V. Glass addressed many of them, including:

    * Teachers are the most important influence in a child's education.
    * Merit pay is a good way to increase the performance of teachers.
    * Subject matter knowledge is the most important asset a teacher can possess.
    * Teachers are well paid.
    * Subject matter is the most important asset a teacher can possess.

You have also no doubt heard that teachers have it easy because they have summers off, and can go home in mid-afternoon when their students leave, and that they can get tenure and therefore are protected from ever being fired.
Myths, all of them. And here's some new ones, offered by Alice Trosclair, who has been teaching for nine years in south Louisiana..

    1. Tonio   9 years ago

      Ha, ha...

    2. Ted S.   9 years ago

Subject matter is the most important asset a teacher can possess.

I'd like to learn a foreign language from somebody who can actually speak that language.

      1. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

Honestly, from talking to teachers I get the subtext of "abilities of child are set by birth, and there's nothing to be done about it".

        1. Sidd Finch v2.01   9 years ago

          Are they wrong?

          1. Rhywun   9 years ago

            No.

            1. Clich? Bandit   9 years ago

There is nothing fundamentally different between myself and Archimedes. But I have the benefit of his result without the difficulty of the work. So, I would say a "teacher" can have an enormous impact. A large number of very smart people get poor educations and are less able to leverage their intelligence. While a number of privileged morons get excellent educations and can at least not screw up daddy's fortune. It doesn't take brains to be successful, it takes knowledge.

              1. CE   9 years ago

It takes perseverance and forbearance most of all.

          2. kbolino   9 years ago

            Are they wrong?

Only insofar as the existence of their profession as a government institution is a giant fraud.

          3. Mickey Rat   9 years ago

Perhaps not. However if they are not wrong then teacher's being the most important influence in a child's education is wrong.

        2. Agent Cooper   9 years ago

We've had to have intervention specialists work with our daughter in reading. She's improved greatly and is almost up to speed on the grade level. I've seen what good, dedicated teachers can do.

          1. invisible finger   9 years ago

I've seen what good, dedicated teachers can do.

They should form a professional guild of some sort.

          2. Rufus The Monocled   9 years ago

Great educators with a natural humanist outlook who do it as a labor of love are indispensable asset to a community in my view.

            1. BigT   9 years ago

For sure. But the unions protect the worst teachers, not just the best. Like cops, most are good folks doing their best. But the bad ones can't be removed easily and are protected by their colleagues and union.

              1. Agent Cooper   9 years ago

Agree. Public unions should go. Private ones are fine.

    3. Rhywun   9 years ago

Talk about strawmen. I don't hold any of those beliefs*, but I still think they're full of shit on a lot of things.

*Possibly excepting "teachers are well paid". In many areas, they certainly are.

      1. C. Anacreon   9 years ago

I also like how someone in teaching nine whole years already believes she knows what is fact and what is myth for all the teachers in the USA, not just in her particular school.

      2. Brett L   9 years ago

I don't think that going to work for 8.5 hours a day and having some followup at home is the brutal death march that teachers claim. Especially elementary school teachers. High school, where coaching and extracurricular sponsorship might genuinely keep you away from your family a couple nights a week and maybe some weekends is different. That's the entry level of a professional job, which teachers claim they have.

        1. The Last American Hero   9 years ago

I dare teachers to complain to the aspiring CPA or attorney who is working a gazillion hours a week, with a whopping 10 PTO and 6 standard holidays off a year, and who spends nights studying for their certification exams, to complain about how hard they work. Go ahead, trade places for a year.

    4. gagster   9 years ago

Based on how much my wife made, I'd say teachers are well paid.

A few years back, I calculated that my wife would work a little over half as many hours as I did in a typical year. In exchange for that, she got paid about sixty percent of what I made, for a much easier job and now, at 54, she's retired with an excellent pension. My pension is zero no matter when I retire.

      1. CE   9 years ago

Your wife must by mythical, according to the authors.

    5. CE   9 years ago

Yeah, that mythical summer vacation. I guess I dreamed that when I was a kid.

    6. Toast88   9 years ago

Teachers are incredibly well paid compared to most entry-level jobs.

When I was in Arkansas, first year teachers made, at a minimum, $42,000 starting out. Lots of 22 year olds would love a job like that.

Then you have the close-to $1,000 mandatory step increase in salary each year. Less than 10 years in, you're making $50,000+ base salary. Not too shabby for being "underpaid".

And that's not even counting benefits, raises, time off, etc.

Being a teacher is definitely super stressful, but so are about a billion other jobs that take more time and pay you less.

  7. Rich   9 years ago

The FBI will be investigating who hacked the Democratic National Committee and provided thousands of internal emails to Wikileaks.

    2. IndyEleven   9 years ago

An excellent idea. How about we give 25% of whatever the prez cuts out of the federal budget from the previous year to them in gold/cash? Only good on actual year over year spending reductions, calculated at the end of his/her term.

      1. R C Dean   9 years ago

At least 30 arrested at Guns N' Roses concert in New Jersey

At least 30 people were arrested at a Guns N' Roses concert in New Jersey, including a woman accused of assaulting police.

The arrests occurred at Saturday night's show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford. Investigators say 30-year-old Kimberly Goodman was charged with aggravated assault against two state troopers, who received minor injuries.

State troopers say there were also arrests for solicitation without a permit, disorderly persons, criminal trespassing, simple assault, drug offenses, resisting arrests, open lewdness and harassment.

"We have nothing nailed," said Armstrong, when asked about CEO Marissa Mayer's role after all is said and done. "We will work with her over the next months and on the next steps, and depending on where we get, we will have clarity on everyone's roles."

Armstrong, who once worked with Mayer at Google, is being polite. She'll not be with the company after the transaction is approved, said many sources.

Really not Draconian enough to matter when the price increase per year is 10%+ in housing. The tax should be 60% for all foreign owners and legislation to stop strawman purchases that or ban all foreign purchasing.

Pollsters now know why they were wrong about Brexit

Britain is still reeling from the shock of its Brexit referendum, in which the UK voted 52%-48% in favour of leaving the EU.

The people to blame for this shock are the pollsters, who consistently predicted a Remain majority before the final result, which went to Leave.

Now those pollsters have come up with an explanation for why they were wrong. The details are covered in a fascinating blog post by YouGov research director Anthony Wells. [?]

We're going to summarise Wells' analysis here but it's well worth reading the whole thing for the nitty-gritty stuff. Basically, Wells says, the pollsters got six things wrong:

Phone polls don't work anymore, and even online polls are inaccurate.[?]

Polls undercount voters who are hard to reach. [?]

Graduates are over-represented in polls. [...]

Polls fail to add "attitudinal weights." [?]

    Turnout models are wrong. [?]

Models for reallocation of "don't knows" are wrong. [...]

Britain is still reeling from the shock of its Brexit referendum,

Why do I seriously doubt that?

the pollsters got six things wrong

The polls weren't that far off. Barely outside the margin of error, is my recollection. I think the polls showed a dead heat, and Brexit won by, what 4.5%?

Its mostly that nobody (who matters) wanted to believe that there was a very distinct possibility that Brexit would win.

    5. bassjoe   9 years ago

While there seemed to have been "momentum" towards the REMAIN side in the final days, it's not unusual for polling to detect nonexistent movement.

Also, other than the crazy 55-45 (clear) outlier of a poll released on the day of the referendum (which could have, ironically, actually affected the result because voters are weird like that), the actual election result difference ended up being within the margin of error of the vast majority of polls going back weeks.

There was no "mistake". Statistically speaking, the polls got it right.

Gary Johnson and his Libertarians aren't an alternative

Steve Chapman's Thursday portrayal of the current Libertarian candidates as kinder and gentler misses the point. They're neither. Abolishing the departments of Education, Commerce and Housing and Urban Development would slash programs for special needs students in districts everywhere, damage export-oriented industries and businesses, and halt the only source of development of affordable housing in most communities. None of these would make our economy kinder or gentler ? or more prosperous.

And Gary Johnson's claim that most Americans are unwitting libertarians is not plausible. As a country, we have always had a minority that advocated libertarian ideas, but when forced to decide, a majority of us have always rejected them. The libertarians of 1787 opposed ratification of the Constitution ? but we ratified it. The libertarians of the Progressive Era opposed food and drug laws and child labor laws ? but they were passed. The libertarians of the 1930s opposed social security and unemployment insurance ? but now those programs are sacrosanct. No industrialized country has every prospered with a libertarian model of government. It's an idea that doesn't work in practice.

      1. C. Anacreon   9 years ago

That's the thing people like this always believe. Unless there's a federal bureaucracy, no local or state programs would exist. Of course, if you were even that concerned about it, you could just have a federal law requiring certain standards, and not need a multi-billion-dollar federal agency with people sitting around on high-paid 25-hour work weeks to 'make sure it happens', but I'm sure that's beyond the writer's comprehension.

My wife is a teacher as well up here and it's the exact same thing. I think teachers as a whole in North America have the same beef. I've had some pretty interesting conversations with teachers over the years. Believe you me, they're well aware A) the government is retarded and B) the unions exist for its own sake and not to really protect them of anything. They're just as frustrated as we are on issues on, for example, firing dead weight or bad teachers.

Believe it or not, much of the criticism teacher's face is usually because of government bull shit that forces it on them.

And it only got ratified because Alexander Hamilton and his goons argued the 18th century equivalent of the "penaltax" argument. To paraphrase Hamilton to the state legislatures he said "If you like your unenumerated powers, you can keep your unenumerated powers."

There's no reason to regard the Constitution as a sacrosanct and infallible document. It is after all, the government giving itself permission to do all sorts of things that inevitably expanded in scope. Don't make me bust out the Lysander Spooner quotes...

        4. CE   9 years ago

A man's natural rights are his own, against the whole world; and any infringement of them is equally a crime, whether committed by one man, or by millions; whether committed by one man, calling himself a robber, (or by any other name indicating his true character,) or by millions, calling themselves a government.

      2. Toast88   9 years ago

To be fair, it's a collection of restrictions on the government, not the other way around, as so many in modern times want people to think.

        1. Free Society   9 years ago

It does grant the federal government power to do things, that's why Hamilton pushed it by promising that those powers would be only enumerated, not implicit. He lied knowingly and confessed to that fact not long after ratification.

Scientists have a fascinating theory to explain why smart people should spend less time with friends

If you're looking for an excuse to back out of a social engagement tonight ? preferably one that's not, "I'd rather play Pok?mon Go" ? have we got the perfect line for you.

    Ready?

    "I'm just too intelligent."

Be sure to come with plenty of supporting evidence, namely an IQ score and the results of a recent study on the "savanna theory of happiness." Your pals will be sure to understand.

The study, led by psychologists at Singapore Management University and the London School of Economics, found that people are generally happier the more time they spend with friends. That is, except really smart people.

    1. Lee Genes   9 years ago

I think it has more to do with an unwillingness / incapability of ignoring all the stupid things your friends say.

This is also proof of why libertarians are the smartest people in the room.

      NOW GET OFF MY LAWN

      1. db   9 years ago

There is a little something to that, however I find my smartest friends say some really dumb things, frequently about economics and politics.

        1. Free Society   9 years ago

I find it fascinating how otherwise highly intelligent people can so poorly reason their views. I guess when you add in cultural cues and social pressures, the importance of genuine "intelligence" in determining ones views is mostly negated but for a very select few sober rationalists.

Friend of mine is a minarchist of a Hayekian bent, he also has an IQ sufficient to grant him membership in MENSA. He attended a MENSA meeting and realized that he was the only person in the room of about 200 people that wasn't somewhere between a warmed over moderate or an full on Marxist.

          1. db   9 years ago

That's one reason I never bothered to join. Besides, how interesting or fun can it be to attend a meeting of people who spend so much emotional effort trying to prove they are smarter than everyone. I know (myself included) a fair number of people who would qualify, and we all pretty much think Mensa members are giant douchebags.

            1. db   9 years ago

Said more succinctly, your value as a human being is not solely based on an arbitrary measure of your "intelligence."

              1. Free Society   9 years ago

Said more succinctly, your value as a human being is not solely based on an arbitrary measure of your "intelligence."

I meant that your capacity for intelligence does not necessarily translate to an ability to properly reason. It's one thing to think, but another to actually know how to think.

Your value as a human being, I believe is more about what you can offer others. Intelligent and rational people can typically offer more, as it happen but that doesn't mean people can't create value in other ways.

'Don't use our song!' Stars band together to sing hilarious message on John Oliver after Donald Trump used more songs without permission at the Republican convention

Trump came out on stage in typical bombastic style on the opening night of the convention ? to Queen's We Are The Champions ? and after giving a speech accepting the Republican nomination in Thursday night's grand finale, ended the event with The Rolling Stones' You Can't Always Get What You Want.

These latest incidents spurred Oliver to form a super group ? featuring Usher, Cyndi Lauper, Michael Bolton, Josh Groban John Mellencamp, Imagine Dragons' Dan Reynolds and Heart's Nancy and Ann Wilson ? to send a simple message to self-serving politicians: 'Don't use our song.'

        1. Carl #TeamBlue #RedSucks   9 years ago

To the extent that DMCA 1201 is used in cases of "hacking", it is generally companies suing people who find security vulnerabilities in their products -- not really applicable to the present situation.

The mentioned Ticketmaster case is the one that I'm aware of that most resembles what people conceive of as "hacking", and even then, not really. CFAA is a lot more likely in my non-professional opinion.

      3. Carl #TeamBlue #RedSucks   9 years ago

Guy who said DMCA is wrong.

What the US needs is a 'good, old-fashioned economic depression'

Describing what he called the "crack-up boom," Ludwig von Mises, the great Austrian economist, said:

"The boom cannot continue indefinitely. There are two alternatives. Either the banks continue the credit expansion without restriction and thus cause constantly mounting price increases and an ever-growing orgy of speculation ? which, as in all other cases of unlimited inflation, ends in a "crack-up boom" and in a collapse of the money and credit system.

Or the banks stop before this point is reached, voluntarily renounce further credit expansion, and thus bring about the crisis. The depression follows in both instances." (emphasis added)

    [...]

A good, old-fashioned, pre-1929 depression (like the short-lived, eleven-month depression in 1920?1921, before the days of "modern" central banking and "enlightened" Keynesian intervention "cures") is the only tonic that can clear out the malinvestment built up since the beginning of the fiat money era.

Recessions find things that even the best examiners cannot. Recessions serve a purpose. Recessions stop unproductive asset bubbles and wipeout the artificial paper wealth created by them. Recessions also eliminate weak businesses and create growth opportunities for the ones strong enough and lucky enough to survive it. You come out on the other side with a better and more rational economy.

But real recessions also used to make a few rich and important people poor and unimportant. And that is why the government invented monetarism and Keysnesian stimulus, to keep that from happening.

Famed Oak Tree From 'Shawshank Redemption' Is Toppled by Heavy Winds

    Ban wind!

The oak had remained one of the enduring images from the 1994 prison-escape film. Fans had flocked by the thousands every year to the tree, which stood in a private field in Lucas, Ohio, about halfway between Columbus and Cleveland. Now, many are grieving after heavy winds knocked over the oak on Friday.

The tree symbolizes hope" to its many visitors, said Jodie Snavely, an official with the Mansfield/Richland Convention and Visitors Bureau. "When they can actually come and see that, it's very touching to them, and it means a lot to them."

Clinton - Trump Double Sided Silver Coin

We all know this election is horrible. It's like a sick joke that our two major party choices are Hillary and Trump. This coin will commemorate this historic(in a bad way) election. Just like this election, no matter which side wins, you lose. However, unlike this election with this you get 1 troy ounce of .999 silver. That way at least, after either Hillary or Trump have destroyed America, you have 1 troy ounce of silver that is sure to be very valuable in post-apocalyptic America.

  41. Lee Genes   9 years ago

I wasn't going to link to this but I decided you're all a bunch of assholes. So here you go....

The concept of equality is enticing.

But, as mentioned earlier, the "equality" that we desire is usually a stand in for "how white people are treated." Being treated that way always comes at the detriment of others, especially Black folks.

Scholars have explored in depth how white people gain access through human subjectivity only through the creation of an "other" racial designation that lacks humanity. White people are treated the way they are because they are positioned in contrast with those treated the way they are not, or inhumanely.

So, when we seek "equal treatment" or "to be treated like human beings," while understanding freedom and humanity through the lens of whiteness, we are often seeking only to be treated better than those who represent Blackness the most.

Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein and her running mate were arrested Wednesday after they led a three-hour sit-in at a bank to protest housing foreclosures.

A college football player says he was stopped by police in Iowa while playing Pokemon Go and had guns pointed at him because he matched the description of a man suspected of robbing a nearby bank.

Which wouldn't be news unless he's black. I wonder........ yep.

    1. __Warren__   9 years ago

      It's that wide-set nose!

    2. R C Dean   9 years ago

The description was probably "A black man. Kinda funny lookin', ya know?"

      1. Greg Loves His Woodchipper   9 years ago

That certainly seems more likely than "the guy was built like a division 1 defensive lineman"

    3. Sir Digby Chicken Caesar   9 years ago

Isn't this the place for a "gotta catch 'em all" reference.

I mean, burglary suspects, football players....

Donald Trump is doing an AMA on the "The Donald" subreddit on Reddit on Thursday.

    Should be wild fun.

    1. Joe M   9 years ago

"Do you prefer calling Republicans that don't support you cuckservatives or simply cucks?"

That's about the deepest that crowd can manage.

The autistic man that the officer tried to shoot because he was holding a deadly toy truck has been hospitalized in a psych ward ever since

It was more than her son could endure, as well. On Tuesday, Rios wandered yet again. He returned to the blood-stained sidewalk where his caregiver had been shot the day before and threw himself to the ground, his mother said. Rocking rhythmically, he shouted: "I hate the police. I hate the police."

Rios has been in the psychiatric wing of Aventura Hospital since then, said Soto, who visited her son Friday night. For days, Rios had remained hospitalized in the same dirty clothes and blood-stained jacket he was wearing when his image was seared into the national debate about race and policing and the senseless shooting of unarmed men.

What the ever-lovin' fuck? I've had two inpatient psych wards, and nobody, but nobody, spent more than a day in the clothes they came in with. We kept an inventory of "goodwill" clothes for people who didn't have a change (mostly involuntary/emergency detention nutters).

Verizon is buying most of Yahoo for $4.8 billion.

I hope they leave the tumblr porn alone.

    1. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

Tumblr is about $4,799,999 of the value of Yahoo right now.

      1. Carl #TeamBlue #RedSucks   9 years ago

Actually, Verizon/AOL have been clear that the crown jewels are Yahoo's content network (News, Sports, Finance) and adtech. Yahoo has been having an awful time trying to monetize Tumblr.

    2. AlmightyJB   9 years ago

I'm thinking Netscape is more likely.

      1. Stormy Dragon   9 years ago

Netscape is owned by AOL, not Yahoo (although Verizon owns AOL too).

  48. Enough About Palin   9 years ago

Verizon is buying most of Yahoo for $4.8 billion. Verizon purchased AOL last year for $4.4 billion.

I read in the WSJ this afternoon that at its peak, Yahoo! was valued at $125 billion.

    1. Agent Cooper   9 years ago

It was really overvalued. As is a lot of other tech/media companies.

    2. CE   9 years ago

This 4.8 billion is just the core assets of Yahoo, the worthless ones. The alibaba stake and the patents are not part of the sale.

  49. Pay up, Palin's Buttplug!   9 years ago

The political circus of the Republican National Convention and now the Democratic National Convention has distracted us all from some much more important news: namely, what sort of cool movie trailers were shown for the first time at the San Diego Comic Convention.

Whose idea was it to hold Comic-Con at the same time as the RNC and DNC?

    1. invisible finger   9 years ago

It's not like the hookers have a tough decision on which convention to work.

Speaking of Comic-Con, this is so goddamned funny that I don't know how my drawers aren't soaked right now

    4. CE   9 years ago

Too bad the LP convention wasn't in San Diego.

  50. Enough About Palin   9 years ago

Does anyone else find it funny that the anti-big business, bank-hating Democrats are having their convention in the WELLS FARGO Center/

    1. Dennis, Constitutional Peasant   9 years ago

Proof that the banks control all "The People's" speech-rights. Where can they be free of this capitalist constraint?

    2. Juvenile Bluster   9 years ago

I'd be surprised if someone doesn't work how many names that building has had thanks to bank consolidation.

(It was much more Philly-esque when it was the FU Center (First Union Center))

Early reports of 15 dead and dozens injured in knife attack outside of Tokyo.

*insert standard snark about banning fully automatic assault knives*

    1. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

I was gonna post some crack about it, but, according to Our State Broadcaster's early report, it was done

      a) at night
      b) at a facility for disabled

that the murdered used to work at. Fuck, at that point it goes beyond murder, into literal butchery of twice-over helpless people.
