Credit: JeepersMedia via Foter.com / CC BY Baltimore Police Officer Edward Nero has been found not guilty of all charges for playing any role in the death of Freddie Gray in police custody last year.
- A Planned Parenthood clinic in Florida was evacuated (and seven people hospitalized) over exposure to what appears to be cleaning chemicals. Local authorities say there's currently no criminal investigation.
- The Supreme Court today unanimously ruled that Republican members of the House representing Virginia did not have standing to challenge the state's redistricting of Congressional lines.
- Also in Virginia, Republican leaders of the state legislature formally filed suit to block the Democratic governor's executive order restoring voting rights to more than 200,000 felons.
- A federal appeals court has tossed out a $1.3 billion judgment against Bank of America over the sale of defective mortgage loans to Fannie and Freddie Mac. The panel determined that the bank might have engaged in breach of contract, but not fraud. Manhattan's U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara brought the suit.
- Ride-sharing service Lyft has begun very limited testing of a system to allow users to schedule a ride up to 24 hours in advance.

The Supreme Court today unanimously ruled that Republican members of the House representing Virginia did not have standing to challenge the state's redistricting of Congressional lines.
Looks like they were...
[dons sunglasses]
...standing over the line.
Is there any theoretical person or group of people who *would* have standing? In a lot of cases against the government it seems like the answer is no.
^This, seriously. Every taxpayer should automatically have standing to sue any government to which he pays taxes, or which receives any of his tax dollars. And since money is fungible, that means anyone who receives any federal tax money can be sued by any US taxpayer.
Let the lawsuits begin.

That is a interesting article, and it sure makes a mockery of any "post-racial" flapdoodle we might pretend exists in America today. The only thing that everyone seems to agree on is that every tribe looks out for their own.
The rate of interracial marriage has tripled since 1980.
Don't fall for media and Internet comment board doom and gloom.
Don't do it! Remember The Juice!
Cankles should have married the Juice.
Nancy Reagan was already married to Big Ron.
If the glove don't fit...
The rate of interracial marriage has tripled since 1980.
That's a huge bellwether of racial progress. Huge. And everyone pretends nothing has changed since 1950.
Yes. Millennials, for all of their many faults (their emoji obsession is at the top of that list), do not seem to care about race, which is fantastic.
Hm. I don't think it's Gen X or Boomers coming up with all this "cultural (i.e. racial) appropriation" nonsense. They care.
They just don't care in this circumstance.
Not true. Millennials make up the bulk of BLM and race issues a rampant on college campuses.
I do not think that is a majority of them. I was musing out loud. I blame emojis.

How much of this is skewed by white dudes marrying Asian chicks?
My heterosexual male Asian friends really, really don't like this.
There's more than 1 billion other Asian women out there, and with back-of-the-envelope calculation, about around half-a billion White dudes. Get a grip. I thought they were good at math.
I married an Asian...Siberia is in Asia, hell Siberia is MOST of Asia.
Not in the US, there aren't. Enh, as a white man who has dated my fair share of Asian dudes myself, I just find these calculations kind of amusing.

I don't see how that is "skewing", but White /Hispanic is the most common.
Oh great, just think of all the future Zimmermans.
How is tracking any flavor of interracial marriage skewing the stats?
It seems that the stats would be skewed if they weren't tracking any flavor of interracial marriage, no?
If you want black/white marriage stats, you should ask for those, rather than looking at interracial marriage stats.
Do I have to spell it out to you? The only kind of interracial relationships that matter are black and white. Everything else is chopped liver.
I've seen Asian guys on campus dating white girls. I don't know if it went to the extreme of marriage.

I hope they were forced to do an ultrasound before clearing the place out.

Hey, unlike some abortion mills, at least they're cleaning the place up periodically.
Once a month?
Periodically? Oh, you are clever.
Shoulda known I wouldn't slip that one past the commentariat.
Paging Switzy...
So why is this national news? Oh, that's right, gotta keep up that narrative that the clinics are constantly besieged by militant pro-lifers.
True fact:
We have some pro-life protestors plaguing an abortion clinic near our hospital.
Violence broke out around their activities. Somebody jumped the curb and tried to run over people. They were actually arrested and convicted of some pretty serious violent crimes.
Not a peep in the news, because the almost-victims were pro-lifers. If a pro-lifer had tried to run down people going to a clinic, do you imagine for one instant it wouldn't be news?
That's what YouTube is for

'I'll Never Retire': Americans Break Record for Working Past 65
But remember, the reason labor participation is so shitty is because every single one of the baby boomers retired early at 55.
Some people just like to keep working the jobs that haven't killed or broken them yet.
Boomers didn't save for retirement. Those with decent pay and job security are overstaying their welcome trying to stroke out a few more dollars before they can't work.
I'm getting to that point where everyone starts wondering what I'm going to do for my 'last decade' in the working economy, but I have to say, I personally see increasing evidence that the guys who collect a gold watch and attend a 'Have a great retirement!' party are the ones whose health deteriorates rapidly and they end up in a pine box.
My reasons for intending to continue to work are primarily for health reasons. If I was puttering around the house all day - even if I did "keep myself busy" volunteering, I suspect I'd go stir crazy pretty fast. That, or annoy SWMBO so much she pushes me down the stairs, or gives me "homemade mushroom soup".
If I can find a gig with a 3- or 4-day work week in a company that would value my skill set, I'll be taking it. If some punkass millennial can do my job better than me, I have no problem losing the position to him. We don't owe each other anything.
I'm 56. I reckon I have to work until I'm to to max my Social Security, because I never put enough in my 401k to be able to ignore SS. I'm also building up my consulting from home business. That can last until I'm senile.

Are Mis-Gendered Band Names 'Ironic' Or Sexist?
Includes this paragraph:
"The same goes for people of color. Take the band Slaves, made up of white men. To decide as white men that a band name like Slaves isn't offensive because "lots of words have two meanings" and, "We live in a society already where people are terrified of the way they act being interpreted, and it's just getting harder," is to disregard the struggle of a group whose suffering you have already benefited from and will never understand."
There have never been white slaves anywhere in history. All slaves have been black.
Smart take, SJW
LOL
"Keenan notes that, "There's always an element in any kind of popular music of pushing someone's buttons. [These bands] are doing that, they're having a name that is deliberately challenging." The question that follows, then, is whose buttons are these names trying to push and why?"
Note: This is regarding male bands with names like "Mean Girls." Which, according to progressives, is 'challenging.'
If you're challenged by a male band with the name 'Mean Girls,' then you must find basic addition impossible
If the band literally identifies as a bunch of Mean Girls, I don't see the problem.

Meh . Better to formally file suit to require the Democratic governor to restore 2A rights to more than 200,000 felons.
They'd just be shooting themselves in the foot if they did that. Besides, I don't think felons are necessarily a reliable voting bloc.
Ah. But would the governor ever do it?
Peter King (the fat skunk haired guy from SI, not the congressman) on the TSA:
Been stuck in a couple of long TSA lines (58 minutes at LaGuardia in April, but nothing approaching two hours) at American airports this spring, and I don't have a lot of sympathy for the complaints about the inconvenience. That's modern travel today. We live in a dangerous world, and you're just going to have to accept getting to the airport two hours before your flight as a rule now. The alternative to significant inconvenience, I'm afraid, is much worse.
He follows up with this story:
I was on an American Airlines flight from Kansas City to O'Hare the other day. A man walked down the aisle and into the row of his seat, and he bumped his head hard on the area right below the overhead bin, causing the underside of the bin to fly open. The guy was okay, looked at the yawning under-bin with wires hanging out, and figured he should probably just leave it alone. The flight attendant came by and said she'd alert maintenance. I'm thinking, Why don't they just try to close the hatch themselves, before calling maintenance? But, you know, everything in the world can't be left up to me. So we waited, and all the passengers boarded, and it was maybe 15 minutes before a maintenance fellow showed up. He took one look at it, carefully moved the under-bin piece back into place, made sure none of the wires would be pinched, and then closed it with a click. Took him seven seconds, max. But then, of course, "the proper paperwork" had to be filled out and signed off. Yes, the paperwork. The captain came on and said we'd be underway as soon as "the paperwork" was complete. Five minutes. Ten minutes. Fourteen minutes. "We're just getting the paperwork completed, and we'll be underway." All in all, it was a 31-minute delay, to snap a bin shut and dutifully record it in some logbook. In the immortal words of Laura King, I mean, I'm just saying.
I think I'm more bored by his story than I would have been stuck on an airplane that wasn't moving for half an hour.
Does this person have a point, in any sense of the word?
I haven't hate read him in awhile, but his point seems to be that being inconvenienced by TSA is acceptable, but waiting for an airline to cover their asses by filling out paperwork is unacceptable.
Government is simply the name we give to the lines we stand in together.
And the paperwork was probably FAA-mandated, so there.
Peter King has never had a point in the entirety of his journalistic career. I have absolutely no idea why people even read his drivel.
The only time anything regarding writer Peter King was funny is when Kissing Suzy Kolber still existed and were responding to his articles every week.
Most of his articles were "I know Brett Favre".

That back-to-back posting is like poetry. Well played.
Being delayed for two hours by government goons is A-OK; being delayed a half hour by corporate incompetence is evil.
The irony being there is probably more actual danger associated with this moron thinking he, being the only "smart" person on the plane, could have just slammed that lid shut, no need for some knuckle-dragging "maintenance guy" to "check the wires" before clearing the plane for takeoff.
You could get rid of TSA completely, and the situation would be less dangerous than this dipshit fucking around with the wiring. Thank God that, in his words, "everything in the world can't be left up to me."
The other Peter King would be rooting for the IRA to blow the plane up.

Elijah Wood Claims Hollywood Is in the Grip of Massive Pedophilia Epidemic
No shit.
Corey Feldman? Interesting. Maybe Michael Jackson was actually protecting all the child actors from abuse because he was abused when he was a child. just thinking out loud
That is actually just crazy enough to be true. The whole thing is just sick. How could there not be rampant child molesting in Hollywood? There are a million cute kids out there with stage parents willing to do anything to get them in movies. The opportunities for abuse are just too great for it not to attract pedophiles.

Nero was indicted for merely arresting the Gray and putting the guy in a van. He didn't put in the seat belt, which doesn't quite rise to the level of criminal negligence (apparently).
The black driver should also be acquitted, barring video evidence that he sped recklessly to harm Gray.
I don't like lynch mobs. And I am not joining one even if the target is a cop.
FYTW, reversed.
He arrested Gray without having any cause to do so. As such, any actions by him with respect to Gray constitute assault.
If we treat this similar to the way prosecutors treat cases regarding non-cops, he is therefore responsible for anything that happens to Gray that flows from the assault, whether or not it was reasonably foreseeable at the time.
Good point.
Wasn't an "illegal knife" the stated reason for the arrest?
It was the stated, but per everything that's happened since, it wasn't actually illegal and there was no probable cause for an arrest.
Yes it was. But they found the knife after they had him cuffed on the ground, so, you know - really only a "reason" an idiot would buy.
The prosecution admitted that he had the right to stop Gray. They argued he didn't have to right to handcuff him and search him afterwards. Which is moot point, since Nero wasn't the arresting officer.
The judge's ruling and salient points -
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....tes-police
In Nero's case, Baltimore veered dangerously close to essentially arguing that there are only two kinds of stops: lawful arrests and assaults. Baltimore defense attorney Warren Brown summed up the stakes to the New York Times: "If you're going to go back and charge every police officer whose arrest was determined to be illegal with assault, or every search that's deemed to be absent probable cause, you're going to indict the entire police force."
That's not to say that arrests should be a zone of immunity for police, but rather that intent matters. And that's exactly what the judge in Nero's case found. "There has been no evidence that the defendant intended for a crime to occur," he wrote in his ruling. Police officers chase fleeing suspects all the time, and if they can go to prison for chasing a man, searching him, handcuffing him, and arresting him after finding what seemed to be an illegal knife, that "chill wind" they feel will become a lot chillier.
In the country with the highest prison population I think "chilling" police from making arrests is an excellent idea. I want the police to be extra special sure that when they trap, threaten, chain, harm, and other do wrong to another human, that they are confident a judge and or jury will find their actions reasonable. I want cops who falsely arrest someone to be charged with kidnapping. When you look historically, this is the norm, not an outside opinion.
And, under the felony murder rule, anyone who commits a felony (like assault) does the time if someone dies in connection with their felony.
Yeah, if this guy wasn't a cop, he'd have a murder conviction right now. Because he's a cop, he's off scot-free.

Not if he used a private server to collect his contributions.
It makes me wonder how much the FBI is really out to get the Clintons. McAuliffe is about as close to a Clinton consigilere as you can get.
It makes me wonder if they've been muzzled over the e-mail scandal so they are now out looking for something Obama couldn't easily (without great political damage to himself) pardon her for.
That or just looking for some high profile Democratic scalps to try and overcome the damage to their credibility that will result from letting her walk. If let her walk, the entire country will consider the FBI and DOJ to be a joke. And the FBI and DOJ knows that. They only thing they could do to try and fix that would be to spend years dedicated to convicting as many high profile Democrats as possible.
Any chance they're waiting for a new president who won't pardon her to take office?
I don't think so.
If that's true then she's willing to everyone burn. Also: If she's Prez she can pardon them, no?
Sure she could. But do you want to have to depend on Hillary coming through for you to avoid prison? That sounds like a really bad plan to me.

The Enduring Racism Of Wonder Woman
You could argue that Marston's racism is inconsistent with his feminism and with Wonder Woman's true principles. Marston generally wrote stories in which Wonder Woman would discover a patriarchal society of Mole Men or Seal Men, help the women find their true moral, physical, and erotic strength, and then depart with a happy matriarchy in place. In Wonder Woman #19, though, Marston's racism interferes with the feminist narrative. Wonder Woman does not help black women to find strength and sisterhood; in fact, for all practical purposes, black women are not represented at all in the comic. Marston's belief in female superiority and his belief in black inferiority are incompatible. He cannot imagine black women, and therefore, for the one and only time in the Wonder Woman series, is unable to imagine feminist revolution. Racism undermined Marston's progressive vision.
Wonder Woman was Marston's ideal woman. And that ideal woman for him was, and had to be, white. DC should include Philippus in their film; there should be black Amazons. But as long as Wonder Woman herself is white, and has to be white, Marston's racism will linger.
So there's enduring racism because her creator was a racist, even though no modern depictions of Wonder Woman are racist at all. He's basically bought into the ridiculous narrative of leftist original sin - if something was created by a bigot, it is forever tainted, completely without regard for whether the object has anything to do with racism now.
I love Berlatsky.
If you want a black woman super hero, create one. Don't make Wonder Woman black.
The corollary of that is, of course, don't change Asian superheroes into White people.
Maybe we just shouldn't care that much what race characters are and if Scarlett Johanson wants to play a formerly Japanese character and Idris Elba wants to play a Norse God, we should just shrug and go with it.
Or we can obsess over this shit and engage in dumbass racial tribalism.
Absolutely. Just pointing out the hypocrisy of some who roll their eyes at cries of "Yellow-washing" but then turn around and shout "WHY IS SPIDER-MAN BLACK NOW*?!?"
*Of course, if that person was actually a fan and not just some Internet comment-board blowhard, they'd now Ultimate Spider-Man exists in an alternate universe from Prime Spider-Man, so it's a completely different character in a completely different series. But, whatever.
The Idris Elba thing, from what I read, was because Disney was concerned with the popularity of Norse mythology in white supremacist circles attracting a very inconvenient fan base for the Thor movie. Heimdall in particular is apparently real popular in those circles, so making him a minority was a deliberate choice to get them all to boycott the film.
That's actually kind of awesome. It's also good PR for the studio getting white supremacists pissed at you.
Ohhh YES! Let's do the latter, there's no important work left to do anyway.
Idris Elba is the best actor of our generation and should be allowed to play any role he wants. If he wants to play Wonder Woman he should play Wonder Woman.
One of the best, sure, but can he, like Matthew McConaughey, philosophize about time being a flat circle and somehow manage to sell a bunch of ugly cars, too? I will believe it when I see it.
I am fine with that too.
There's no reason wonder woman has to be white or black. Her race isn't relevant. The new Preacher show turned Tulip from a blonde into a black woman and since her race is totally irrelevant to the story, it shouldn't make any difference
The point is that it's not racist to still have Wonder Woman be white just because her creator was a bigot. That's fucking retarded.
I agree. The problem with turning her black is that the SJWs are just going to write every white character out of existence. Annie was remade with a black protagonist. They are currently filming a reboot of Nancy Drew with of course a black protagonist. It never ends.
'Once you go Black you never go back' doesn't apply to the ethnic portrayal of fictional characters. In the 1980's Nancy Drew had big tits and feather hair; if they make her a sista today, there is no law preventing them from making her Asian ten years from now. Or a Gloxian F'ghinum from Procyon 100 years from now.
Sure there isn't. But if they ever did, the SJWs would have a stroke.
+1 Natty Dreads Bumpo
Aren't comic book characters fictional? I don't ask that to be a dick. I'm with HM, in that let people write or read what they want. Or are people arguing Canon?
Yes, but the readers often don't want the change and become targets of racism charges because of it. It's cultural war crap, and it makes it really hard to get your voice as a reader heard when it can be side lined so easily.
In the absence of Joshua Corning, our self-crowned King of All Gamers, are you making your play for the title of Queen of All Comic Book Fans? While I don't share your ability to telepathically tap into the collective unconsciousness of all comic book readers, in my experience, DC fans are aware that the DC multiverse is the most complex, twisting thing ever, and that Lois Lane can be pregnant with Superman's kid one day, and in the next, Superman has never kissed her. Whining about melanin continuity in DC is the stupidest thing ever; especially in the Flash-verse, as the various Flashes are the center-point of the entire multiverse and alternate universes and alternate Flashes are kind of a running theme of the series since 1961
But again, that sort of stuff separates the true fans, who actually know and care about the characters and stories and those who are just using it as a prop in their ideological Punch and Judy shows.
Considering the Wally West fans held out for something like ten years to get back the ginger guy and have been celebrating non-stop on the comic boards, Tumblr, and Reddit since the leak happened a couple days ago, I don't need to be telepathic to know the 'true' (whatever the fuck that means) Wally West fans never wanted the race change. Also, if you are so into comics how are you not aware that up until convergence DC destroyed the multiverse. They eliminated all universes except 52 at the launch of the New 52 (hence the name). In none of those universes did ginger Wally West still exist. We didn't see him again until convergence (about a year ago) had a one shot featuring him, his wife, and kids. DC announced several ongoing spinoff due to convergence, but Wally West was not one of them. He has disappeared up until this point.
Furthermore, how can you claim to understand comics if you aren't aware of the main universe vs alternate universes paradigm and how that effects if a character will be featured in stories. Nearly all comics are written in the main universe. Alternate universes are used nearly solely for one offs and their characters will not be seen for years. The only current exception to this is Earth-2, which by the way is one comic for that entire universe.
Where are you getting this? I actually explained the New52 thing to other commenters in several past threads. And the New52/Convergence is a moot point, as my question to you is how do you not know about this?
The Morrison Multiversity series proves this to be complete and utter bullshit, and again, with the pre-Flashpoint reboot of DC:Rebirth that you seem completely ignorant of (or are mendaciously ignoring), a moot point. In sum, you're just looking for something to complain about.
"Whining about melanin continuity in DC is the stupidest thing ever; especially in the Flash-verse, as the various Flashes are the center-point of the entire multiverse and alternate universes and alternate Flashes are kind of a running theme of the series since 1961"
You are saying it's pointless to complain about losing ginger Wally West because alternate Flash's exist. I was pointing out what complete bullshit this is because up until Convergence, there was a limited multiverse. Also the multiverse doesn't matter all that fucking much for favorite characters if it won't be the source of ongoing stories except for the occasional one shot.
"But again, that sort of stuff separates the true fans, who actually know and care about the characters and stories and those who are just using it as a prop in their ideological Punch and Judy shows."
You went off about 'true' fans and how they don't care what a character looks like. I pointed out how the Wally West fandom has waited around since the launch of New 52 calling for their Wally back and they did care about his appearance. If your definition of 'true' fans doesn't include people that loyal, who care that much, then it's a bullshit definition.
How hollow one's attachment to the character must be if its solely based on his or her appearance. Especially in a world with how many Robins? And again, red-haired Wally West is back. And getting worked up about missing that Wally West is as stupid as getting worked up about Superman "dying". My point is that the DC continuity changes over and over again, and I haven't the foggiest idea why anyone seems surprised at this since this has been the standard since Crisis on Multiple Earths.
I misread this originally, and I see you are aware of Rebirth. Nevertheless, you're being not completely honest here. You know that it was more than a "race change" as his entire backstory was changed and was basically a different character. As such, the fact that we've discussed four separate times in the past decade that DC has rebooted their continuity (Flashpoint, New52, Convergence, Rebirth) just further proves my point.
From what I've seen from people are actually read comics, and not the, "Y thar no whit hestory month?" types is that people don't generally like it when characters they've followed for years get replaced, period. If they slapped adamantium claws on Deadpool and started calling him Wolverine, people would still be pissed.
I know a lot of people were pissed off when they replaced Blue Beetle, but most of them sincerely seemed to more upset about DC killing off a character they grew up reading about. Replacing him with a hispanic teenager just made it seem like were killing him off in order to satisfy PC demands.
Despite the fact that Reyes-Beetle was so much cooler than Kord-Beetle.
Sheldon and Comic Book Guy are laughing at what major nerds all of you are.
HM, there are some Ted Kord fans out there.
My point was that he was a character that had some fans. And killing him off just to bring in his non-union Mexican equivalent didn't go over well with a lot of fans. It was in response to question about how comic books fans react to race lifts. And the answer is basically don't kill my favorite character in order to do it.
As you already pointed out, nobody who actually read comics pitched a fit about the new black Spiderman, because they could still read about the old white Spider-Man. I'm guessing Marvel editorial learned from the whole clone saga fiasco.
Absolutely.
They aren't ever going to change Wonder Woman's race. The feminists that make her a star would revolt if one of their characters got fucked with. It's everybody else's toys that have to be sacrificed for the good of society. (thankfully, being a profit run business DC is starting to back off on this kind of crap. They've just announced a return of the original Wally West (the Flash) after an attempt to race change him four years ago).
Maybe Wonder Woman just identifies as a woman?
Secret identity? Caitlyn Kent.
That would be hilarious. I might sacrifice my non-existent first born to see that stories reaction.
My solution/compromise would be to have WW in a multi-racial gangbang.
This is the Internet.
solution/compromise =/= fantasy
you know, if you have to go back 70 in order to point out racism, the racism well has run pretty dry.
Shouldn't the Amazons be Semitic rather than Caucasian or African?
She's not really white, that's just the paper she's drawn on.
Racist paper.
My father's James Bond was a white man, my father's father's James Bond was a white man, and I'll be damned if some dark-skinned beefcake is going to be my James Bond.
He's Reginald Bond.
Billy Dee Williams is James Bond, and he wants his Colt 45 shaken, not stirred.
Was Marston a racist?
One would expect better from the lover of Margaret Sanger's niece.
His lover's mother - Margaret Sanger's sister - was a birth-control activist like Margaret, until Margaret secured her release from prison based on a promise to obey the law in future.
Christians make up about ten percent of the population of Syria, but close to zero percent of the population of Syrian "refugees" being allowed into America, oddly enough.
I guess the obvious explanation is that no Syrian Christians want to come here, because it's such a great life for them over there.
I guess the obvious explanation is that no Syrian Christians want to come here, because it's such a great life for them over there.
They're the ones doing all the terrorism, duh.
FTFA:
Sounds more like they are afraid to ask to leave Syria more than that we are not letting them in.
We have enough islamaphobes in this country as it is
Didn't Canada accept all the Christian refugees?
I don't have a link, but the ban on US weapons exports to China is being lifted.
China China or Taiwan?
OOPS I mean to say 'Vietnam'.
NOT China. I meant Vietnam.
*patiently waiting for the politicians to explain why 60,000 Americans died*
I can explain: altruism + binding the military
Because China.
Anti-immigrant nationalist loses Austrian presidential election by a hair.
http://qz.com/690539/austria-j.....far-right/
That article is delusional.
"European leaders breathed a sigh of relief as Austria demonstrated?if only by a hair's breadth?that right-wing political parties can be defeated if people will broadly band together against them."
No one cared about this party before recently and they just won 49.7% of the vote. They have parliamentary elections coming up and could easily be one of the top vote getters. Anti-immigration populism is on an upswing continent wide and leftists want to do a victory dance because they don't have a majority of the vote yet.
Well, they had 10% of the vote 10 years ago and have 50% of the vote now, so I don't think the trendlines are something left should be celebrating.
Uh, this is not the first time the 'Far Right' has been 'surging' in Europe. The French prez race of 2005 or so came down to Le Pen vs Chirac. We've been here before. Europe has these populist spaz-outs and then it evaporates, amounting to not much past short-term excitement.
Le Pen never got 49%. And the Austrian Presidency is a mostly symbolic position. The real power is in Parliament. And if they get 49% in those elections, that will be a very big deal.
Unfortunately the article does not mention turnout.
It's clear that direct election of the exec by voters is a very bad idea.
Direct election of the exec and the lege and the judges, too. What we need is a system whereby the people vote for electors who vote for electors who vote for electors.....however many levels of that we need so elections last 4 years. We can have professional electioneers doing nothing but perpetually running for office with none of them actually ever holding office.
Just get an FPTP parliament + Heinlein's repeal senate. The latter being essentially jury duty.
The really important part is getting rid of universal suffrage.
Le Pen got to a runoff because so many people were running that he managed to get a runoff with 16% of the vote. He then lost to Chirac *83% to 17.* That's completely different than a party getting 49% of the vote after winning the first round.
Fair enough. As I said, the article does not mention turnout.
72%, I think. I think it was actually higher than the first round.
Hofer got about 36 percent in the first round.
And the two traditional parties, the SP? and the ?VP, each got around 12 percent in the first round.
Hmmm...an awful candidate gets through to the general because of a large number of people running. Feels oddly familiar...
Approval voting solves this spectacularly well.
Hillary?
Alexander van der Bellen is an awful candidate, having been head of the far-left Green Party.
that right-wing political parties can be defeated if people will broadly band together against them
and rig the vote
Citation needed.
Uh, the FP? have been one of the three, biggest parties in Austria for decades, and have on a number of occasions come within a hair's width of coming second (see the 1999 parliamentary election).
That having been said, the hand-wringing and bias over the FP? has been ridiculous. "Democracy" in the EU means voting the way Brussels likes. See their witch hunt agains the current Polish government.
Nigeria removes oil subsidy.

All across the world there is a wave of pro-markets reform. Latin America's 'Pink Tide' is dying. The Ivory Coast is going to privatize some stakes in companies. Even France loosened its labor markets. The only non-western regressor is China. Unfortunately, that's a big one.
The Eko Atlantic project is also really amazing.
This may be the dumbest, worst written thing I have ever seen.
Before the Internet, this type of "thinking" was kept in the shadows, where it belonged. And where only a handful of friends of the speaker would look at each other as they listened, embarrassed, and sipped their organic wine.
WTF, guy is nutzoid. At least he seems like a harmless nut.
When I was younger, I frequently asked strangers on the street if they were biracial and I had a pretty good track record for guessing correctly.
I bet this guy was a barrel of laughs to hang out with in high school.
I wonder how he reacted when the respondent said, "Yes I am. My Dad's side is mostly English, while my mom's side is Welsh. Quite a shocker for both sides when they started dating, let me tell you..."
I worked with a guy whose mom was Serbian and Father Croatian. Talk about mixed race. I still can't believe that wedding didn't end in gunfire.
Well, if you count Hispanic, Semitic, and Amerind as races ti would be pretty easy to guess correctly. The answer would be 'yes', and you'd probably be right.
She looks like a New York Italian to me. But my psyche won't be shattered if I find out otherwise.
I broke my pinky toe this morning. As a consequence of medical treatment I'm all hopped up on Vicodin today...I'm pretty sure I butchered that sentence but you get the gist.
Daisy, Daaiiissssyyyyy...
Carry on.
Ouch.
Stella! Stellllllllla!
This is why you should turn on the lights while stumbling towards the bathroom at 3am.
Close. 5:10AM and already running late. Slammed it into the bottom of the bathroom door mid-jog. In the dark. Like an asshole.
That's not a bad plot to score some Vicodin. What are you gonna do when you run out of pinkies?
Medical treatment?
I don't mean to sound brutally unsympatheteic, because broken toes are a sonofabitch, especially sonsofabitch you *can't really do anything about*... but....
Medical treatment??
Don't you just mean, "painkillers"?
because the only 'medical treatment' for a broken pinky toe i've ever heard in my entire life involves simply wrapping some tape around it and the one next to it and "sucking it up"
Check out Ronnie Lott over here.
This is actually what a doctor told me. Verbatim. "wrap some tape around it, try and stay off it".
Basically, unless you shatter your meta-...whatever they're called? the long bones in the body of the foot.... the only 'treatment' is to .. basically do nothing and wait it out. because you can't properly immobilize it unless you intend to stay off your foot 100%, and even then it doesn't really make a shits worth of difference.
I've seem them give older people that "boot" thing as sort of a token sympathy gesture (it makes them shut up and feel like "someone did something") but the fact is that it does absolutely nothing to speed healing or change the outcome. Its just for show.
metatarsals
That's what I've always done for broken toes. Tape them up and try not to walk on it too much for a while.
I have broken my big toe twice. Didn't even bother going to the doc the second time.
Same here, although it was nice to be able to stock up on Percocet.
Second time I broke my big toe I stubbed it so hard I was bruised right back to the ankle, which to be blunt - was a bit of a bastard. The toe stopped hurting after about 2 weeks. The bruising - much longer.
How are you going to score Vicodin sucking it up?
Uh, yeah man. This thing was pointing about 70 degrees too far to the left. I basically separated my toe bone from the rest of my foot.
Damn that hurts just hearing about it.
Ouch.
I feel your pain, and wish you the speediest recovery. And plenty of drugs.
That said - to my point - what 'treatment' is there? because last i checked there's little anybody can do about a broken toe sans 'try and keep it straight' (see: tape) while it heals on its own.
Oh, I had it reset and pretty much as you said, wrap it up and wait it out. The only reason I was given meds was because they had to get the floating toe bone next to the break point. So I have the fantastic sensation of bone hitting raw nerve endings everytime I fart too hard.
So, meds.
Hey, it could be worse. You could have broken ribs AND toes.
Online dark market Silk Road is apparently back and vouched for by a guy in charge of another dark market.

Wasn't the last one infiltrated by the FBI in like a week?
The last one had FBI from launch. They simply used it as a honeypot for a year before springing the trap.
This one is probably actually ran by the FBI.
The guy vouching probably got nabbed. Plea deal.
Why would someone want to revive a damaged brand?
Well fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice, you're never gonna fool me again! So by that logic the third one is foolproof!

Thanks to the felon-voting lawsuit, I learned about this case.
"...firearm rights may only be restored to a convicted felon by a permit issued by a circuit court," not by a clemency decision from the governor.
So a convicted felon may have his right to vote and hold office restored, but still remain banned from carrying arms. And the governor can't do anything except start the process, by restoring officeholding and voting rights and then letting the courts decide whether to restore firearm rights as well.
I don't have the link, but apparently Health Canada gave the go-ahead to genetically engineered salmon with eel genes. AquaClear? or something? The NDP critic was unhappy.
Those Canadians will do anything if they think it will improve their chances of seeing a Stanley Cup hoisted by one of their teams one day.
The Eel Genes will make us unstoppable!
Your eel is years from getting wet.
I like eels,
Except as meals.
And the way they feels.
Something I saw mentioned on Twitter the other day:
Andrew Breitbart was instrumental in founding two political news sites: Breitbart and Huffington Post.
If he were still alive today... he'd probably be far more proud of HuffPo than the site that bears his name, wouldn't he.
Why, exactly?
Because Breitbart.com is a steaming cauldron racism and mendacity.
And shit writing. And just plain shit.
Probably. They are both bad and I think they always have been.
Ariana Huffington is an insufferable twat.
BTW: CA: Civil War is pretty great. Not as great WS but still great. Spoiler alert: titular hero even dares question Saint Roosevelt briefly.
Hahah you said titular.

Federal housing for trans illegal immigrants. If there is a pot farm nearby, its like Libertopia.
But libertarians don't support federal housing, which you'd know if you weren't a dumbshit.
You are so humorless.
No, you just suck at humor. You're only funny unintentionally.
ISIS has lost 20% of its Syrian territory and 45% of its Iraqi territory.
I'm sure this will have no effect on Nick 'Bombz r bad mmkay' Gillespie's insipid articles.
At some point you would think the Iraqis and Syrians would do the job themselves. If they don't or won't, maybe they want to live under ISIS.
They are the ones doing it. S l o w l y
Which sociopaths did they lose it to?
Kurds and the Iraqi government. Syria's government took some back, but they're in cahoots with ISIS anyway.
I don't understand. Did Nick argue that bombs don't kill people?
I'm often disturbed by these "lack of standing" cases. They tend to leave the government free to do whatever it wants as long as the effect is deemed diffuse enough. If there is something unconstitutional about the way the Virginia government has done redistricting, I'd consider any Virginia voter to have standing to challenge it.
This case is yet another consequence of BoA's disasterous acquisition of CountryWide.
At the same time that CountryWide was perpetrating the alleged fraud, Fannie Mae awarded preferred morgage originator status to CountryWide and lauded them as "the paragon of lending virtue" for their innovation in offering mortgages to deadbeats.
Fannie Mae published "Case Study: Countrywide Home Loans, Inc." in 2000 to show the mortgage industry what the model mortgage company should do. Fannie Mae used to have this paper on their website, but I guess it's a bit embarrassing now, so they've taken it down.
Barney Frank's boyfriend made millions as one of the directors at Fanny Mae. So did Jamie Gorlick another Democratic hack. Someone needs to write a biography of Gorelick. She was a Clinton hack at DOJ and the one who was behind the infamous "wall between law enforcement and intelligence" that was a large part of the reason why the INS and FBI didn't know that the 911 hijackers were in the country and dangerous even tough the NSA was listening to Bin Ladin's phone conversations and knew they were in the country. She then moved on and made millions as one of the directors at Fannie Mae in the early 2000s. And to top it off, she was one of the lawyers advising Duke University during the LAX fiasco.
That woman may have fucked up more things and done more damage to the country than any American in history.
"U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara brought the suit."

Anyone have good links on the federal government pushing down lending standards for housing on the banks and Fannie/Freddie? Despite what Krugnuts has to say.
Wiki
the most significant tended to occur over many years, and were simply *amplified* by later acts.
e.g. the "The Federal Housing Enterprises Financial Safety and Soundness Act of 1992 (or FHEFSSA)"
It was not 'when the law passed', necessarily, when things went full-retard, but often in later iterations and rulemaking, which compounded effects.
This site (tho i haven't read it all) seems to have a good timeline/breakdown
Thanks. I was listening to ContraKrugman and apparently Paulie called for a housing bubble in 2001 due to the low rates. Of course now he says he was just joking

Anatomy of a Train Wreck by Stan Liebowitz (October 2008) is an excellent analysis.
Tom Woods' Meltdown offers a book-length analysis. Anybody who read the Wall Street Journal or Forbes from about 1995-2007 knew that the mortgage market was being corrupted by the feds, and was going to end in tears. It was predicted well in advance.
In the Baltimore case, I'm not the least bit surprised that a cop was acquitted by another cop (aka the Judge).
This tactic always works our for Policemen.
If by some miracle the officer is indicted of a crime, the officer waives his right to a trial by jury. This almost guarantees an acquittal by another insider to the justice system.
We should consider having a separate body of investigators/judges/prosecutors that just on prosecute all public officials including cops, judges, politicians. I'd even extend it to their immediate family.
Hopefully for the other cops, they too will waive their right to a trial by jury.
It's hard out there for a Minister of Defence.
