Donald Trump Wins New York Primary, Taking Small But Significant Step Toward Nomination

We may not know for a while how many of the Empire State's 95 delegates will be awarded to Trump.

has won the Republican Presidential Primary in his home state of New York, according to MSNBC and CNN, though it's too soon to say how many delegates he will be awarded.  

The way New York's 95 Republican delegates are divvied up is complicated, as Matt Welch explained earlier today:

Each of New York's 27 congressional districts—regardless if any actual Republicans live in them—will award three delegates; any candidate winning 50+ percent in that district sweeps all three, but 49.9 percent gets you just two. The same formula is applied to the statewide total, and divvied up between 14 delegates. In plainer English, if Trump wins 50.1 percent in all 27 districts, he gets all 95 of New York's delegates; if he wins 49.9 percent, he gets just 61. That 34-delegate swing alone is larger than the number Trump won with his runaway romp in the state of Tennessee.

Entering today, Trump held 743 delegates, putting him ahead of his remaining rivals Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), who has 517, and Gov. John Kasich (Ohio) who has 143. 1,237 delegates is the magic number to clinch the GOP nomination.

For much of the past four weeks, Trump polled at just over 50 percent in New York, while Ohio Gov. John Kasich hovered at around 22 percent. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Trump's closest rival in total delegates but hamstrung by his infamous "New York values" comment at a debate in January, has had trouble breaking 18 percent in the Empire State.

It should be noted that Trump had one of his most "winning" moments on any debate stage when he invoked the stoic solidarity of New Yorkers after 9/11 in response to Cruz's "New York values" dig. However, last night at a rally in Buffalo, Trump suffered a brain-fart, blowing a good amount of his 9/11 street credibility when he referred to that fateful day as "7/11."

Trump currently enjoys a lead of twenty percent over Cruz in next week's winner-take-all Pennsylvania primary, where 71 delegates will be at stake. Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Rhode Island will also hold Republican primaries next Tuesday, with 101 combined delegates at stake. 

No upcoming contest looms larger than California, which will hold its primary on June 7 with 172 delegates to be awarded proportionally. Trump presently holds an eighteen percent lead over Cruz in the Golden State.

I am just continually dumbfounded at this point. Who are these people who are actually voting for Trump? Are they really serious that they think he will make a good president, despite enormous evidence to the contrary? And even worse, why vote for him knowing that he is the one person who can make Hillary president by being the GOP nominee?

For years I've defended Republicans against my liberal friends saying that they weren't knuckle-dragging mouth-breathers, and now they go and make me look like a fool.

I'll bite. I'm one of those people who's actually gonna vote for Trump. Although I will secretly hope that Reince Prebius is a covert supergenius who actually orchestrating the Draft Rand movement behind the scenes for a brokered convention that makes no side altogether happy but appeases all (I believe Rand would be the one candidate the Trump acolytes would get behind).

Do I believe Trump will be a good president, "despite enormous evidence to the contrary"? I'm not sure what the enormous evidence to the contrary is other than the fact that the US is maybe batting .100 in good presidents. But I also don't think he'll represent any irreconcilably bad presidency either. I never understand how people invest so much hope or fear into any given political candidate. I generally think that even the "fringe" candidates like a Ron Paul, Kucinich, Bernie, etc. who have more theoretical and revolutionary policy ideas if elected would find themselves governing in a way that represents a level of continuity that their supporters would feel let down by (and that their detractors wouldn't really acknowledge).

The fact is that the system itself is larger than any of the cogs, no matter how crucial.

Moreover, I tend to think the fundamental battleground isn't really politics and policy (those are merely symptomatic of root causes). I think the fundamental issue with America, and the West writ large, is this sort of socio-cultural Orwellian creep of SJW crimethink policing.

And I'll readily concede that Trump is hardly a free-speech purist or even lukewarm ally. He'd probably support weakening of libel laws and cracking down on vaguely incendiary Islamist speech that I'd be more forgiving of. But I'll only reiterate that I don't think those political actions, as important as they may be, are as crucial as the larger culture. They'll be fought in the political arena, congress will vote, judges will hear cases. All of the policy is shifted so far downstream and diluted through sundry levels of govt that nothing unexpectedly offense can emerge from it anymore. The nature of the American system of governance is incremental, diffuse, and defined by continuity.

But in the media age, it has become more than just the policy itself, even if that is to the chagrin of us more serious and considerate. But it is nevertheless both a mirror of and a driver of the larger cultural zeitgeist of its people. And the cultural shift a Trump presidency would create in the regressive thought police and grievance industry is enough to merit his vote.

If this was true, there would be no reason to vote for Trump in the first place. The primary reason for supporting him, as a candidate for President, is to change the direction of government policy. That on its face implies some level of offensiveness already exists.

And if you think the machinery of government might curtail Trump from doing anything offensive, then you are historically ignorant in the extreme. Never mind the sitting President obviously contradicting such a point, a closer historical example would be Nixon. In fact, I'd say the same cultural factors that propelled Nixon to the Presidency in 1968 are at play again. And that man created the EPA and enacted price controls.

This is a pissing contest between "your" faction and "their" faction for who gets to control the zeitgeist. But any victory is fleeting. Just as the "permanent Democratic majority" and "era of racial healing" never came to be, neither will Trump truly stymie the regressive thought police and grievance industry. He doesn't represent their antithesis; he is their essence, distilled and adapted to a different audience.

I know this is a daydream, but I have to remind you that your favored candidate exudes all the charisma of a limp trout and does not have the ability to motivate turnout. No, it isn't. GOP Presidential vote is a beauty contest. GOP voters cast ballots for delegates too and those delegates are essentially unpledged though many claim they will vote on the first ballot for whomever won their
congressional district. In 2008 and 2012, many seemingly solid Ron Paul delegates had their arms twisted at the convention to vote for McCain or Romney. Those who stood firm were ignored and their vote for RP was not announced on the floor.
