France has made it a crime to pay for sex.

    Bad sex is still legal?

      Hello.

"A Texas police officer is on administrative leave after a video showed him body-slamming a sixth-grade girl, 12 years old, to the ground."

I'm looking forward to David French's defense of the cop while explaining she deserved it.

Making it a crime to pay for sex has worked out so splendidly in the US.

      1. Brochettaward   9 years ago

I'm very curious about the stats behind the French push. I've seen claims that 85% of French prostitutes are victims of human trafficking, and that legalization actually increases the number of trafficked women.

        1. Ted S.   9 years ago

I call bullshit on both those claims.

I wish Maggie MacNeill (sp?) were a regular columnist here.

          1. Crusty Juggler   9 years ago

Yes. Googling a claim like that with MacNeil's name, or ENB's name will most likely throw baking soda on that grease fire.

I thought you were just supposed to unplug the oven during a grease fire? Or something

My plan is to push whatever women or children are nearby towards the fire, and then run away.

        3. Illocust   9 years ago

Why would you traffic women when prostitution is legal? You can find a dozen drop outs with big boobs of all ethnicities locally that don't cost nearly as much as criminally importing prostitutes. The only ones that you'd bother doing it for are the ones that are going to be illegal for other reasons. In which case legalization/illegalization won't matter.

There are Muslim men fighting for the right to kill their wives

Groups of hard-line, right-wing Islamic extremists across Pakistan have banded together in protest to reclaim the right to abuse and kill their wives and daughters.

The country has finally taken a progressive step forward on gender equality, but some men still believe the mistreatment of women is their divine, God-given right.

The controversy began when the Pakistani government introduced the Protection of Women Against Violence Bill, which effectively criminalizes violence against women in Punjab ? the country's most populous region.

Before the law was officially enacted on March 1, diehard extremists attempted to block the legislation, saying it would "destroy the family system in Pakistan" and "add to the miseries of women."

The bill was passed unanimously by the Punjab Assembly, and opponents have since warned of ongoing protests if it is not repealed.

High housing prices in Vancouver are causing shootings in Surrey, says "The Surrey Association of Sustainable Communities", who has apparently never heard of the illicit drug trade.

    1. Ted S.   9 years ago

There's that buzzword "sustainable" again. Something tells me that what they want is really only "sustainable" through the heavy hand of the state.

    2. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

That's certainly a novel spin on the matter. Apparently "younger families" = shootings is a proven thing? Not that the quoted "expert" helps:

It's this idea that I know my neighbours, I know the people around me and I can rely on them because I have shared values.

I live in Vancouver, and my building alone has ~200 apartments. If we assume 1.5 people per apartment, that's 300 "neighbors" - how the dick can I know them all? I mean, yeah, I'm introvert and everything, but still. And the building across the street probably has even more people. Let alone "shared values", unless he means like "do NOT shoot people over drug trade"?

One billionaire moves south ? and New Jersey's budget falls apart

Billionaire David Tepper is moving from New Jersey to Florida this year ? and so is his tax contribution to New Jersey, which is so large the move threatens his former home's state budget.

The outsize dent one change of address can make sheds light not only on how much money America's wealthiest citizens can move, but also on how much the "1 percent" contributes to a functioning government.

Mr. Tepper, a highly successful hedge-fund manager, registered to vote in Florida last October, according to Bloomberg. He listed a condominium in Florida as his new residential address and moved his business, Appaloosa Management, to the Sunshine State. And the New Jersey legislature took notice.

"We may be facing an unusual degree of income-tax forecast risk," testified Frank Haines, a budget officer with New Jersey's Office of Legislative Services, before a Senate committee Tuesday.

New Jersey's struggling state budget projections rely on income taxes for 40 percent of revenue, Bloomberg reported. To support this, the state levies the third-highest tax burden in the country, with a marginal income tax rate of almost 9 percent for top earners and an array of estate and inheritance taxes.

    1. Lee G   9 years ago

Somehow I doubt that New Jersey will finally put 2 and 2 together and fix their mess.

      1. Rhywun   9 years ago

Don't worry, there are still a lot of smokers they can use to balance to budget.

Bitching about our awesomely low gas tax is the recent go-to move. They're also huge fans of jacking of "service fees" for government-mandated interactions.

        2. Krabappel   9 years ago

And Virginia has a lot of cigarettes to ship to northern black markets. Of course some of our retailers get choked by NYC police...

    2. Tonio   9 years ago

Good for him. I hope they feel it good and hard. But we all know that they won't cut spending, just make things more miserable for the remaining people.

    3. Notorious UGCC   9 years ago

So, Tepper read Atlas Shrugged, but he got confused and moved to Florida instead of Galt's Gulch?

      1. Brett L   9 years ago

"Holy shit! You can pump your own gas for half the price!"

        1. Meow-shawn!   9 years ago

Gas is cheaper at the pump in NJ than FL. I'm unclear exactly why; I think it might might have something to do with a lot of refineries plus a low state gas tax. It's one of the only things that's cheaper in N-E-W Jerz than in the Gunshine State.

The irony is that this is exactly what keeps NJ from changing its no-self-pump law: the residents don't think they need it and the econo-illiteracy is so thick that they think it might even be a scheme to raise prices!

          1. Medical Physics Guy   9 years ago

Why do you want to take away the jobs of hardworking New Jerseyians shawn?

            1. KDN   9 years ago

Don't worry, they're usually not New Jerseyans.

        2. Dan S.   9 years ago

Actually, average gasoline prices in Florida seem to be a bit higher than in New Jersey. Just as they are higher in New York than in New Jersey, despite New Jersey being the only state of the three that requires an attendant to pump all gas. I guess the difference in state gas taxes outweighs the effect of having to pay the attendant.

    4. IndyEleven   9 years ago

But wait, 0.1 percenters and their companies don't pay any taxes or pay less than Warren Buffet's secretary or something. Why do they care if he leaves?

      1. Tornado16nb   9 years ago

The cognitive dissonance of those folks is astounding

    5. Illocust   9 years ago

This is one of the reasons I'm so for a flat property tax becoming the main source of income for government. Someone always has to own a property, so fluctuation will be negligible each year. Everyone who does anything in your state will have their dollars contribute to it through either owning property themselves or giving money to a property owner. If you make is flat rate per acre without adjustments it requires basically nothing to calculate, limiting the need for both tax prep services and tax collectors.

If they'd drop the church and non-profit exceptions it would be perfect.

      1. jarflax   9 years ago

I have decided the only fair way for Government to raise revenue is for all Government employees to raise 3x their salary each year via donations, bake sales, and selling their asses on the street. If they each raise 3x their salary that will pay for non labor expenses as long as they keep them reasonable. Plenty of office space in old factories that Government regulations have shut down, and if they want heat they can burn all their mandatory forms.

Supreme Court Rejects Challenge on 'One Person One Vote'

WASHINGTON ? The Supreme Court unanimously ruled on Monday that states may count all residents, whether or not they are eligible to vote, in drawing election districts. The decision was a major statement on the meaning of a fundamental principle of the American political system, that of "one person one vote."

"We hold, based on constitutional history, this court's decisions and longstanding practice, that a state may draw its legislative districts based on total population," Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote for the court.

As a practical matter, the ruling mostly helped Democrats and upheld the status quo.

But until this decision, the court had never resolved whether voting districts should contain roughly the same number of people or the same number of eligible voters. Counting all people amplifies the voting power of places that have large numbers of residents who cannot vote legally ? including immigrants who are here legally but are not citizens, illegal immigrants and children. Those places tend to be urban and to vote Democratic.

Did Reason cover this case at all? I never even heard of it until now.

    1. Libertarian   9 years ago

They don't have time to cover EVERYTHING. Trump 2016!!!!!

    2. Rich   9 years ago

Serious question: Did this case rule pregnant women to be two persons? (For the purpose of districting, of course.)

    3. wareagle   9 years ago

Reason might cover it if Trump opines on the subject. And then it will be to tell us his wrong, no matter his opinion.

    4. Mickey Rat   9 years ago

You would think the infamous 3/5ths rule for how people held in bondage counted for determining representative apportionment between the states was an exception which proved the rule that it was total population that should be determinate.

      1. kbolino   9 years ago

You would think the infamous 3/5ths rule for how people held in bondage counted for determining representative apportionment between the states was an exception which proved the rule that it was total population that should be determinate.

No, it proves the exact opposite. The whole purpose of the 3/5ths rule was because slaves couldn't vote, but the people who would keep them in bondage could. You could hardly come up with a greater travesty of representation than giving slaveholders more voting power because they held more slaves.

If you say total population should be counted for representation rather than eligible voting population, you are saying one of the following:

        1) You don't agree with "one man, one vote";
        2) You want everyone from newborns to illegal immigrants to be able to vote;
        3) You are mathematically illiterate.

I stand aghast that not only did WaPo phrase the Texas challenge as against "one man, one vote" but the SCOTUS held unanimously that representation based on total population is consistent with "one man, one vote".

I mean seriously, where the fuck did you people learn to count? If there are 150,000 people in a district and 100,000 of them are eligible to vote, then the ratio is 3 to 2 not 1 to 1.

I want to slap every one of these motherfuckers with a hardcover copy of Euclid's Elements.

        1. jarflax   9 years ago

This is absolutely tortured reasoning. Drawing up districts by total residency regardless of eligibility for the franchise is going to end up creating rotten boroughs. District 1, 600,000 residents all citizens. District 2 600,000 residents 1,000 citizens.

Cuckoldry is incredibly rare among humans

Reading the internet, or even perusing the scientific literature, you'd get the idea that people are constantly cheating on their spouses. Indeed, scientists have estimated that anywhere from 10-30 percent of men are unknowingly raising children who are not their own. This situation is referred to as cuckoldry, or scientifically as "extra-pair paternity." Now, however, it appears that our estimates of cuckoldry rates were way off.

A new survey published in Trends in Ecology and Evolution sums up a number of recent studies that show the actual rate of cuckolds in the general population, based on genetic testing and ancestor research, is 1-2 percent. This challenges evolutionary psychologists who have suggested that human women "routinely 'shop around' for good genes by engaging in extra-pair copulation to obtain genetic benefits." This idea came in part from studying socially monogamous songbirds, which mate for life but have roughly 1 in 10 babies as a result of "extra pair" matings.

'I'm f***ed. I can't go to jail': Four high-ranking NYPD officers disciplined amid FBI corruption probe for taking exotic vacations, diamonds and cash from one of NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio's major donors

Around 20 other top NYPD officers were roused from their sleep in the early morning hours by FBI agents investigating what could become one of the largest corruption scandals to hit the department in years. Some are considered witnesses, others could face disciplinary action or even court charges.

The probe centers on allegations that Reichberg and real estate investor Jona Rechnitz, two Orthodox Jewish businessmen, who are both major donors to de Blasio, gave cash, diamonds and overseas trips to cops in return for favors ? including providing security for large Jewish funerals.

Missing Hikers Found Busking After Huge N.C. Rescue Operation

"Throughout a three-day search at least 200 persons were participating between law enforcement, emergency services, rescue, and many, many volunteers," Henderson County Sheriff's Office Major Frank Stout told NBC News.

They were located on Tuesday afternoon around 30 miles from the forest in downtown Asheville. Following a tip, deputies found Rackley and Logan playing guitar on a street corner.

    1. John   9 years ago

Busking? Is that what the kids are calling it now?

We were just in Ashville in the fall. Yeah, that's what they call it and it's everywhere there. We left on a Friday. By Thursday place was filling up with panhandlers. I'm guessing it's a main source of invome for a lot of younger locals. The Pisgah where they were hiking is beautiful. Lots of waterfalls. Great place to visit

How could Castro's problems be blamed on the US? Seriously, the guy has basically implemented every single program that Bernie Sanders calls for. The US embargo has certainly been an advantage to Cuba since domestic, state-owned industry do not have to compete with cheap US imports.

    3. Pan Zagloba   9 years ago

Cuba is going to be an interesting place when Castros croak. Because I don't think it's "external enemy" excuse that keeps these regimes (Cuba, NK) in power after USSR died. It's that the same people are still running the show (Cuba) or that they are a monarchy (NK and arguably Syria after Assad Snr won the Rotating Coup Game that was their national pastime for 25 years, till 2011).

Albania was in the similar position as NK (hated all the neighbours, closed economy, no real ally because they broke with USSR after Stalin died, and with China after Deng got into power) and they still trundled on until a few years after their Glorious Leader died, without leaving an heir.

And that's just the "hard" debt. It doesn't include the $50,000,000,000,000 or so of underfunded entitlements (and that number assumes a decent number of retirees doing the sporting thing and pitching over sideways fairly early.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the national debt/deficits/entitlement policies are by far the biggest issue we have in terms of freedom. It's too late to redefine entitlements in time to stave off the HUGE reconciliation between those who THINK they have assets and those who THINK they have entitlements. The vast majority have been conned that there are two pies out there and there's only one. Your share of it is so much smaller than you think. I don't tend to think very many are going to take the news too well. A LOT of people are going to look for people that will make Sanders and Trump look like reasonable, "with it" cool cats. There's not going to be the "hey, what's that over there" and they take 50% of your stuff when your head is turned, without reprisal. But, I guess, spending too much time on those numbers with a lot of zeroes and commas is dull, and therefore unimportant. It's all worked out in the past, so it will in the future.

Venezuelans get Fridays off for two months in emergency plan 'to save energy'

Venezuelan workers will get Fridays off in the months of April and May, in a bid to save energy in the black-out hit country, the president said.

President Nicolas Maduro said Venezuelans will have "long weekends" in an appearance on state television on Wednesday night, announcing the measure as part of a 60-day plan to fight a power crunch.

"This plan for 60 days, for two months, will allow the country to get through the most difficult period with the most risk. I call on families, on the youth, to join this plan with discipline, with conscience and extreme collaboration to confront this extreme situation," Maduro said.

    Gay Talese commits thought crime.

"During a question-and-answer session at the "Power of Narrative Writing" conference, an audience member asked Talese which female journalists inspired his writing. Talese mentioned authors Nora Ephron and Mary McCarthy, then, after a silence, replied, "None."

Talese then explained that the problem with female journalists was they were limited by their desire to stay above the fray, according to an audience member who spoke to the Washington Post. Amy Littlefield, 29, said that Talese explained "how educated women don't want to hang out with antisocial people.""

And of course this led to Millennial journalists condescendingly lecturing an 84 year old veteran journalist on female writers he should read.

"Friedan wrote The Feminine Mystique out of frustration with magazines refusing to publish her articles in the 1950s, and also critiqued the lack of female journalists on TV during that era. If older male journalists think there weren't enough women writing nonfiction back then, they should think about why that was the case, beginning with reading Friedan's works."

Yeah, I'm sure Gay Talese has no idea who Betty Friedan is, you fucking idiot.

    1. grrizzly   9 years ago

Even today, it should be completely unobjectionable for a young (or old) journalist not to be inspired by any female journalists. What if all your favorite writers happen to be male?

Pennsylvania bans bias against transgender people

One order bans the state from discriminating against any employee or job applicant based on a host of criteria including "gender expression or identity." It also bans discrimination based on race, color, religious creed, ancestry, union membership, age, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, AIDS or HIV status, or disability.

The second seeks to eliminate discrimination in contracting, requiring any company doing business with the state to eliminate bias in hiring and promotion.

Warty and SF don't really jump on the bandwagon from what I've seen. I think Warty made some jokes in the original thread, but I wouldn't count them as part of the group.

            1. A Whole Nother Tulpa   9 years ago

They do when they need to insult Nikki's interlocutors. (It's always well into an argument that they'll toss off some brief ad-hom insult, then another, then another; never addressing the argument's subjects themselves.)

              1. Old Man With Candy   9 years ago

It's so cute how you support yourself. You've done that so often in the past that it's become an infallible marker. C'mon, time for the handle-slip!

              2. Hamster of Doom   9 years ago

This is about as silly as seeing Tulpa in every newcomer. Free Society also claims that there is a cabal out to get people. Honestly. It can't possibly be that we're quite free with our opinions and thoughts here, and the things we say get a reaction from those who feel differently.

We've all been at the bottom of the dogpile at some point. "It was all a plot against me!" No, just a bunch of people independently arriving at the decision that they disagreed with you at that moment in time.

You yourself are not exactly coming off as an unbiased observer.

                1. Illocust   9 years ago

Okay Hamster, I'm not sure who you are talking too in this post.

If it's me, yes, I think Nikki hates me and has done so since a particular thread a while back. It is based upon our differing opinions, but she's gotten very personal overtime and does seem to be using this whole Tulpa thing as an excuse for Ad Homenims.

I don't know what the fuck is going on with OMWC. Sometimes I think he's just a troll and sometimes I think he's deadly serious. I don't know. I do know I fucked up by responding to him earlier, though. I've fed it either way.

Epi, I can be persuaded on pretty much any opinion. He's whole heartedly jumped on this whole Tulpa thing with little to no encouragement. He does seem to be acting as Nikki's back up, but that could just be the most recent threads have been on a topic he happens to agree with her on. I'm not very good at keeping track of what commentors believe.

That's really the only people who have been doing the whole Tulpa thing as anything but a joke, and of them, the only one that's actually getting to be a problem is OMWC.

                  1. Hamster of Doom   9 years ago

I assume it's a long list of people she hates. You probably did something like have children or somehow convey support for the existence of children. Maybe she found out that you don't shovel your sidewalk.

I don't know what the fuck is going on with OMWC.

He's some kind perpetual caricature of a child rapist who really likes to tell that joke basically anytime and always. He's probably on a different list somewhere.

Epi, I can be persuaded on pretty much any opinion. He's whole heartedly jumped on this whole Tulpa thing with little to no encouragement.

                    Which says a lot.

                2. A Whole Nother Tulpa   9 years ago

No one is claiming that there was a grand "plot." Free Society gets grief from those exact people, and only those people, not on the substance of his claims, but directed at him personally. I don't think it was planned, just that reason commenters tend (as people) toward tribalism and cliqueishness, even within a certain fringe community. Ad hominem, left-field, attacks toward FS or John or whoever, while they're in the middle of a debate, are deplorable.

                  1. Hamster of Doom   9 years ago

No one is claiming that there was a grand "plot."

Now they (primarily the Nikki/Epi/SF/Warty/OMWC cohort) are all paranoid about new users and anyone who argues with them, or even so much as posts anything even innocuous.

Yeah, that cabal tends to be the "shout down the heretics" crowd.

Shit, dude, I could keep going.

Tell you what. You drop the, "why, no one never did say nor imply any such thing" and I will not be equally mulish about having openly tussled with Illocust, John, FS et al. as well. People disagree. Free speech can be noisy.

I don't think it was planned, just that reason commenters tend (as people) toward tribalism and cliqueishness, even within a certain fringe community.

Why yes, I think I mentioned that myself on one or two occasions. Let's hope it works better when you try it.

                    Really. It's fucking tiresome.

Ad hominem, left-field, attacks toward FS or John or whoever, while they're in the middle of a debate, are deplorable.

Truth. I must point out that we're taking about John, who is surely possessing of all the good qualities you noticed and more, and yet habitually volleys with "you retard".

It would be a fine idea to pay a bit more attention in the future, to what's being communicated and how. And I can happily shortcut the finger-pointing of who is to blame and who needs to pay more attention - fucking everyone. You, me, Welch, John, Illocust, everyone.

                      Not Crusty, he's precious.

The rest of us incorrigible fucks ought to try harder, though. We're the libertarians. If we can't figure out how to straighten out our little messes like adults, we can hardly expect better from the rest of the madding crowd.

Free Society also claims that there is a cabal out to get people.

Care to provide a direct quote on that? When did I claim there is a "cabal"? I don't recall ever even accusing anyone of being Tulpa, which is apparently a very popular pastime in these parts.

Warty and SF don't really jump on the bandwagon from what I've seen. I think Warty made some jokes in the original thread, but I wouldn't count them as part of the group.

I usually get commentary from them when they're filling in as Nikki's white knights. I don't know of any bandwagon per se, just that certain types of posters like to school together when they sense the potential for some ad hominem trolling.

          4. Trshmnstr, terror of the trash   9 years ago

All I remember is he was a cop fellater, and then later supposedly creating a new concern-troll account called Bo. (But since we're both Tulpa, who knows if Bo was even Tulpa.)

Bo =/= Tulpa. Bo started out somewhat "sane," but went off the deep end after people stopped paying attention to him. Tulpa was a troll from day one, and had a thousand alt accounts. Every once in a while, he still pops up to troll.

Now they (primarily the Nikki/Epi/SF/Warty/OMWC cohort) are all paranoid about new users and anyone who argues with them, or even so much as posts anything even innocuous.

AWNT, I pissed off Nikki a while back in an abortion thread where I didn't let her get away with a inconsistency she was really attached to. That's why this Tulpa accusation is lasting so long. I'm fairly certain Nikki knows it's false, she's just taking the opportunity to pile on the Ad Hominem. Epi as you pointed out (something I hadn't noticed beforehand) is fairly defensive of her view points, so that's why he won't let it go.

It's a personal pissing match, not a statement on the normal culture of this board. Thanks for the defense though. It does give me warm fuzzies.

      1. Old Man With Candy   9 years ago

Isn't that nice that you used one sock to defend the other? I remember you doing this on other occasions, and I encourage it, because you always eventually fuck up and accidently forget to switch handles. I feel sorry for poor Samantha Rogers, whom you dragged into this in a pathetic attempt to try to seem real.

OMWC, it's fine that you know who I am. I posted that video so I can be searched by someone determined enough. Don't spread my name around unnecessarily, though. Have some common internet decency.

Why do people think Illocust is Tulpa? I assume it is not because of a fight with Nikki, as most of us have done that at some point.

                    1. Illocust   9 years ago

I made a couple posts that apparently sounded off a while back on a night thread. OMWC thinks this fits a pattern of Tulpa getting bored with his socks and changing tone and voice. That's where it started.

Why do people think Illocust is Tulpa? I assume it is not because of a fight with Nikki, as most of us have done that at some point.

Well, to keep things in perspective, we're talking about at most less than half a dozen people who have simply created a feedback loop of reinforcing each other's voices whenever this comes up. The idea of it is now more convincing to them then anything Illocust could have said or did. What I assumed at first was a playful if overwrought joke has now gotten pretty damn weird, frankly. And it's a shame, because Illocust has always struck me as just...nice, and normal (for these parts, anyway). I'm confused why anyone thinks it's necessary to incessantly grief an evidently reasonable poster.

Ahh, that's sweet of you. Also, I wouldn't even go up to a half a dozen posters. It's just that Epi and OMWC have been responding to nearly every single post I make with accusations of being Tulpa. It makes it seem like a lot more common accusation than it is.

                      This.

                    7. A Whole Nother Tulpa   9 years ago

It would be a pretty boring place if everyone were calm hands-off scholars following strict sober decorum (if that even exists in reality), or even if they tried to feign being that way. I like the so-called immaturity. I mean, John (e.g.) is a smart, experienced guy, but he's clearly prone to petulance, and I kind of like that: he's probably twice my age and still deeply flawed. You guys are far smarter and more interesting than the average forum bloc, I learn a lot from you, but it's good to know you're human beings, and not just some yea-saying echo chamber.

There's just a point where the ad-homs and cold sarcasm (Nikki's expertise?in a way I admire it, though it's hard not to respond in kind), and whatever this Tulpa-labeling is, become too prevalent, potentially having a chilling effect (I guess it hasn't fazed Illocust too much, which is good).

It does chill speech around here a little bit because no one wants to piss away their time and energy debating the aforementioned ad hominem bullies. Though quite often, the urge to not let them get away with their petty bullshit is too hard to resist. Sometimes real arguments need to be laid out and if the only thing the opponents of those arguments can do is resort to a dogpile of personal attacks, then you just have to let them put their intellectual dishonesty on display.

I find the whole Tulpa obsession very off-putting. I used to frequent and occasionally post on a certain gay-prog site. Perhaps my comments appeared a bit trollish cause I didn't agree much with the site and its regular commenters, I went there for the pictures. Anyway, there was one frequent commenter there, let's call him Rick, who posted a lot and strongly opposed the site party line. His posts were pretty distinct, and his disagreement with the gay-prog party line had next to nothing in common with, say, mine. Despite this at some point anyone disagreeing with the gay-prog orthodoxy was immediately accused of being Rick. And that was so pathetic, especially when you knew full well that you were not Rick but the site regulars accused you of being one.

Tulpa-obsessed posters, keep this in mind.

Point out flaws in Illocust's arguments, even get harsh about it if you must, but I don't see that Tulpaness (Tulpitude?) would actually make her posts wrong even if it were true.
