Vindicated: Professor Whose Students Wanted Her Fired for Politically Incorrect Statements
Andrea Quenette, University of Kansas free speech casualty, will return to class.

Andrea Quenette, the University of Kansas assistant communications professor who was investigated for racial insensitivity after her students demanded her removal from the classroom, was cleared of wrongdoing. She has been on paid leave since November, but will now be able to continue teaching.
On Friday, administrators informed Quenette that her conduct had not violated any official policies. She has been advised to take voluntary cultural competency classes and re-work her curriculum, according to the Lawrence Journal-World.
Quenette described the five-month-long investigatory process as fair.
"I believe they did due diligence in taking the students' concerns seriously, and I do appreciate that," she said.
The investigation had been the product of student complaints: eight students launched a petition calling on KU to fire Quenette after she committed a series of microaggressions in her classroom. Drawing attention to her own inexperience with racism, she had said, "As a white woman I just never have seen the racism… It's not like I see 'Nigger' spray-painted on walls." Using the n-word in any context—even one in which she was admitting her own ignorance—was unacceptable, according to the students.
Quenette also suggested that students who were failing their classes shouldn't blame bad grades on systemic racism. Needless to say, this was treated as heresy.
Quenette is happy with the outcome, and believes that academic freedom has been reaffirmed.
"I feel hopeful there is opportunity for everyone to learn from this experience but also that faculty here can feel comfortable and not afraid," she said.
Still, subjecting professors who make politically incorrect statements to lengthy witch-hunts seems likely to have a chilling effect on free speech, even if the outcome is ultimately a vindication.

She has been advised to take voluntary cultural competency classes
"Voluntary". That's a nice teaching career you have there. It would be a shame...
As cultural competency is a concept from the discipline of Communications, you'd think she would have it down pat.
I am curious HM. You teach, don't you? What is it that you teach exactly?
What is the atmosphere of academic freedom where you teach?
Deuce Bigalow, American Gigolo
My guess: krumping.
Not twerking? I thought HM was a tenth level twerk master. I can see just him standing, arms crossed, a smile of immense satisfaction on his face while he oversees a studio with 30 women twerking for an hour.
Goddamn, that's a beautiful thought.
Until jet Li shows up.

Disappointing... There was no twerking in that video.
I teach Applied Linguistics.
I work for a private, non-sectarian, not-for-profit that started as an accounting and secretarial school and evolved into a 2nd-tier business school. There is no tenure at my place; however, after promotion to associate professor, we have very protective rolling 10-year contracts. I've never encountered anything that would make a Soave article in my career, nor do I feel inhibited in what I can say in the classroom. Hell, I teach a whole unit on cuss words around the world when I teach a class in intercultural pragmatics. To be perfectly honest, Soave's articles always read like he's reporting from some other planet.
Oh, and while I have never met him, I've heard we have an Austrian school-affiliated scholar in our Economics department.
Even at the big name schools, the econ departments are usually fairly libertarian leaning so that doesn't surprise me much. I found they tend to the closest thing to an island of sanity that one will find in the social sciences. Hell, one econ professor I had (at a very much left-leaning school) used the nonexistence of the wage gap as an example for teaching about confounding variables in linear regression analysis.
Going from a an econ to a history class seemed like going from one planet to another. You go from hearing a professor who doesn't take Marx seriously at all to hearing one who takes him as gospel. Though profs and students (and some economists like Krugman) seem to be getting increasingly upset about having a department on campus that doesn't share their biases, so I don't think it'll last. Econ departments may well be teaching Piketty as a text book in 20 years.
some economists like Krugman
Krugman is not an economist. He is a court astrologer.
-jcr
I had the opportunity to take classes from an econ department famous for being almost exclusively Marxist (University of Utah). You get to learn their arguments streangths and weaknesses well.
Don't confuse Paul Krugman the Nobel Memorial Prize winning economist with Paul Krugman the power worshipping pundit.
I am glad to hear that. I suspect you are a real credit to your school and your field.
I have a friend who is a councilor at LSUA, a community college branch of LSU. She claims that overall the school is very pro-first amendment and they have a day set aside to celebrate it every year. Still, according to her her job is dealing with an endless parade of whiny babies in and out of her office all day. Their number one complaint is that learning is too hard and they shouldn't be expected to make good grades. Apparently the professors are mean.
Thank you.
Heh. I have a friend who is one of those mean professors at a community college and she says the same exact thing.
The real question for you, as an academic, would be whether you believe a professor should be permitted to assign his students to view, analyze and discuss the Lenny Bruce bit (available on YouTube) "Any niggers in the house?"
I cannot bring myself as a grown man to say "N-word" nor should I have to.
If I use the word nigger in a derogatory context I will devalue myself and pay a price. The free market will punish me; which was kind of Lenny Bruce's point.
If I use it in the same context as Professor Quenette and you can't handle it that's your problem.
As someone interested enough in libertarian thought to engage with Reason.com, can you appreciate the good faith, if not the validity, of this viewpoint?
Of course, provided that the professor can show how the assignment is in line with the requirements of the course. In the profanity unit of my intercultural pragmatics course, it would fit right in line, especially when he states that people don't get as riled up about the term schvartzers as they to "nigger". You can also extend the conversation to while the Anglicized diminutive of "negro" is so offensive but the Spanish diminutive "negrito/negrita" isn't, with negrita being a term of endearment.
Scrova! Figlio di putana. Mangia la merda! Cazzo in culo! Ma va, pezzo di merda!

"Learn the one weird trick that lets this man swear in 12 languages!"
HM, curious as to what you think of David Livermore.
I haven't read his books, to be honest. But from what I know, I don't see what he's saying that's so different than, say, Geert Hofstede or Edward T. Hall. Or is it just the popularization of their ideas?
I'm not sure that really applies. 'Communications' is a rather vast ocean to swim in rather like 'Maths' or 'Literature'. Just because you're in the same family doesn't mean you speak to each other.
"I feel hopeful there is opportunity for everyone to learn from this experience but also that faculty here can feel comfortable and not afraid," she said.
I'll bet her eyes were twitching when she said that - and if you knew Morse code you could decipher exactly what the eye twitches said. It wasn't anything about feeling hopeful, comfortable and not afraid.
Not what my response would've been.
That's the truth. My take would have been something along the lines of "These people have lost their damn minds and I hope they all die in a fire." Being investigated for telling students to accept personal responsibility for bad grades is pure, unadulterated idiocy.
"She has been advised to take voluntary cultural competency classes and re-work her curriculum"
My curriculum would include a unit on the definition of "voluntary," although I fear that topic might be deemed culturally incompetent.
'Still, subjecting professors who make politically incorrect statements to lengthy witch-hunts seems likely to have a chilling effect on free speech, even if the outcome is ultimately a vindication. '
Seems? Really nailing your colours to the mast there Robby.
She may have been vindicated but I'd imagine she and her colleagues took note of what happened. Waiting four months to find out if you'll be shitcanned IS punishment.
Well Yes, is that not obvious? So replace 'seems likely to' with 'will'.
Her comments seem to indicate that she has learned her lesson.
Why 8 students should b able to wield such power as to be able to get a professor put on paid leave in the first place is a question that should be answered as far as I am concerned.
Any prof that has at least 8 students failing their class have to be looking over their shoulder to see if they get to keep their job or be sacrificed at the altar of PC.
Ah! And now we get to the root of it!
Well, shit. Here's a paper she co-authored:
I guess it's time to start thinking about a longitudinal study.
Or wood-chippers!
I was just wondering how much of a PC nut she is herself and whether or not she was being eaten by a monster of her own making. I find that to be true in a lot of these cases.
If they want to turn a generation into useful idiots, well, have fun with that.
It truly is a crime of epic proportion what they have done. The wasted potential, the misery and ruined lives, my god. They are going to all end up being hoisted by their own petard and you won't see me shed any tears.
From the abstract, it seems like the study is just saying that for boys who get teased in class, teachers getting involved made it worse from the teased boy's perspective; whereas, for girls it was the opposite.
There was also some argle-bargle regarding 'school avoidance', so I guess this is a study to see if kids justify truancy 'cause Sammy teased me!'?
It took a study to figure that out? Any idiot who wasn't home schooled under a rock could have told her that.
What the heck is that?
/Takes puff of cigarette.
She is going to have to watch so many Kevin Hart movies.
Or Martin Lawrence and Spike Lee movies.
If she gets BET she can just watch hours of Martin reruns. I know I do.
Dear God.
Using the n-word in any context?even one in which she was admitting her own ignorance?was unacceptable, according to the students.
"What does 'the n-word' stand for?"
Like the true name of god or the devil you can't say the word because something something magic. You can only refer to it as 'the n-word'.
Shhhhhhh.
Actually, the truth is I have rarely found a need for the word and when I did it wasn't to refer to black people but whites. In fact, there is a house a mile or so down the road full of them.
The house is one that used to be common in Louisiana but not so much anymore. If you haven't lived in a place that was settled primarily by celts you probably have never seen one. The house is surrounded by piles of junk, piles so high that you can barely see the house from some angles. A giant junk yard. There are three generations living in a wood frame house of about 1000 sq feet and none of them work. They are all on welfare and spend their nights dumpster diving (rural parish with dumpster service).
A buddy of mine came to visit once. He was English and this was his first visit to the states. I was taking him to the woods to teach him to shoot and we drove past several of those places. He had never seen one before.
"My God, look at that! I took archaeology classes in the summers to meet girls ( he is a geologist ) and we would dig up old celtic settlements. They looked just like that. They threw all of their trash out of the house and it would pile up in a circle around their houses at throwing range."
I set him straight. "These people are all celts in this area and that isnt trash. That is the good shit they can't throw away and they are saving it for a rainy day. "
He sat still and quiet for a long time, I could see the wheels turning in his head. I guess he put something together from that and what he had seen in school but he didn't say what it was.
"No shit." Was all he said after that.
Hmm, the Irish people where I grew up never did that.
I'd love to hear more about how a region named after a French king, that still to this day has vestiges of French language, was primarily settled by the Celts.
But all I said was this piece of halibut was good enough for a nigger.

Niggardly, Nigeria, non-this, non-that. There are so many choices. Just be careful with the first one because using it can apparently get you in trouble.
I thought is was Nubian.
'We are no longer the knights who say Ni! We are now the knights who say ekki-ekki-ekki-pitang-zoom-boing!
Hey U Grinch U,
U beat me to it! Some people have gotten in WAY deep trouble for using or discussing the word "niggard" or "niggardly" in academic circles, even though, linguistically-historically, it has NOTHING to do with "nigger"!
(Please do NOT send me up the Niger river for having used the N-word... Evolutionarily-speaking, we ALL came form Africa, so I should be given a "pass" (or at least, a "piss", somewhere other than down my back or in my mouth) for using that N-word... Y'all homies let me slide?!?!? (Otherwise, I consider y'all to be "niggardly" in the tolerance department).
Years ago, somewhere along the Pennsylvania turnpike was graffiti that read, "Nigers go home" (sic). As a youth, I assumed it was simply illiterate. Now I see it was a clever ploy to avoid the letter of future political correctness. And as such it remained there for many years.
Mind you, this was long before Monty Python's Life of Brian....

Robby, for fuck's sake, kansas should not be capitalized as it is not a proper noun.
I generally prefer improper nouns. In Yiddish.
And people wonder why Trump is so popular!
"I believe they did due diligence in taking the students' concerns seriously, and I do appreciate that," she said.
Yeah, it only took them five months to determine your clearly not-racist statements were in fact not racist. Really crackerjack investigative job.
""I feel hopeful there is opportunity for everyone to learn from this experience but also that faculty here can feel comfortable and not afraid," she said."
This woman was clearly mistreated and has my sympathy, but her various statements make me think that she is part of the problem and is too stupid to realize it.
Haven't you ever seen soviet or german (under the nazis) confessing their crimes and praising the ruling regime's wisdom and fairness? What you don't see is just off camera, a man pointing a rifle at their heads.
Her speech has that exact flavor.
Or any of various Americans being held by the Norks.
"She concluded her statement, delivered in an affectless monotone, by saying 'I love Big Jayhawk.'"
She was still getting paid.
An open question: it's mid-semester right now, presumably she's not gonna start teaching mid-semester, would you be upset about nearly a year of paid vacation? It's essentially an unplanned sabbatical.
I was thinking this exact same thing. If anyone was wondering why she didn't think much of this particular situation, it's because she's a communications professor and they're essentially asking her if she enjoyed her vacation. I'm sure the threat of being fired wasn't fun, but that's a long time to search around for a new job too.
Actually - state teacher in a state school, this was probably *fast-tracked* compared to their normal speed of working.
Clearly, the system is rigged.
No Trump article? Why is Reason denying this iconoclastic/outsider/reformer coverage?
It's like you don't want America to be great.
Yesterday I drove for two hours across rural Louisiana. Every third house all the way there had Trump signs in the yards. One in particular had about two dozen of them. My wife called it 'Trump garden'. I did not see a single sign for anyone else.
Is that enough or do you need more?

Can we finally lay to rest the myth that men get better looking as they age? Trump is exhibit A
What kind of weirdos believe that?!
I think mainly delusional old guys
I've heard that older guys "remain attractive" but I just assumed that was because they tend to have more money.
Older men can look distinguished, especially if they have salt-and-pepper hair and dress professionally.
That ends when they wear faded Levi's and white, New Balance sneakers (the unofficial uniform of the older man).
Well I dunno. I was dressed poorly with bad hair and a young lady gave me an indication of interest. I'm 71. She was mid to late 20s.
Please tell me you jumped in with both feet, so to speak.
I thought "has money" and "attractive" were synonyms?
You're into young Trump? Ewwwwwwww. I expect that from guys like Rhywun, but I had no idea you sank to those depths.
Young Trump sounds like an obscure Asian dish.

No idea. And... I don't know why people think lettering and honors are a big deal in HS.
I have 3 letters and a fuckload of honors. It just means that the competition sucks. Public schools FTW.
I think it's mainly overbearing helicopter parents. My coworker was freaking out at work the other day because his (eldest) 8th grade daughter had a B. I just chuckled inwardly, yeah that'll be your biggest worry in a few years.
"B" is an Asian "F".
As an aside, I have always been amused at the amount of vitriol Amy Chua's work has produced.

Has Obama officially announced his defection to Cuba, yet?
We could never possibly be so lucky.
Also, the Castro boys both gave him the giant diplomatic middle finger and didn't show up to greet him on his arrival. Nobody has an ounce of respect for this punk-ass slug.
"Has Obama officially announced his defection to Cuba, yet?"
He tried, but they gave him a leaky inner-tube and pointed north.
"OK, class, this week we're studying Joseph Conrad's novel, the Homeboy of the Narcissus."
"Then we're looking at the autobiography of the comedian Dick Gregory."

"...she committed a series of microaggressions in her classroom...."
So she was guilty of making some folks uncomfortable? Good! Need more of it.
Evidently her classroom is not a safe space for her
From Christian Science Monitor:
...11 communications studies Masters students wrote an open letter to the university calling for Quenette's termination.
"Dr. Quenette's deployment of racially violent rhetoric not only creates a non-inclusive environment in opposition to the one of the University of Kansas's core tenets, but actively destroys the very possibility of realizing those values and goals," the students wrote in their letter to the university.
No wonder they're failing. Communications major should be able to write a coherent sentence. That's just gobbledegook.

eight students launched a petition calling on KU to fire Quenette after she committed a series of microaggressions in her classroom
Quit using this term as if it has any validity. How exactly does one aggress against another without intention or cognizance? The word is a question-begging exercise in bad-faith argumentation and cynical emotional appeal, and its users should be called out for being manipulative cowards.
Exactly! Those of us who believe in a free market frequently get sucked in to using the language of those who would destroy a free market. Talk of the "middle class" is the most obvious example. The left frames the argument in Marxian terms and then those who argue for free markets find themselves arguing about how best to protect the middle class. This is stupid and unproductive.
Pro Tip: Begin by renouncing the existence of a class struggle at all.
There is an existence struggle, and class is collectivist claptrap.
You're saying you have no class?
I'm saying we're all classy. So classy! So much class, you won't even believe it.
It's Plato. The middle class is middle class because it possesses *middle-classiness*.
Through negligence?
Then it's not aggression and you can be given the benefit of the doubt, assuming you're dealing with sincere, good-faith-arguing interlocutors. But that's not the case with social justice losers. They use these concepts as a battering ram for forcing their main contention, which is subservience to the progressive cause.
Those kids have micro chips on their shoulders.
My dad used to teach junior high. I can picture him saying, "How about I macroaggress you? Then you'd be wishing it was only a microaggression!"
He had a wooden paddle, with holes drilled in it, hanging from the blackboard - and he had occasion to use it.
More fun stuff from the linked article:
"In addition to complaints from that class discussion, KU investigators looked at complaints about a lack of diversity training in orientation for communications graduate teaching assistants ? for which Quenette coordinates the curriculum ? and a simulation video she created for a media and terrorism class that students called stereotypical and offensive, Quenette said. KU addressed each but found no policy violations regarding them, she said."
So, she's being criticized for not discussing race *enough* (what's the worst that could happen if she did?) and because apparently she did some kind of video where dark-skinned Muslims are portrayed doing something violent.
"KU's conclusion made several recommendations for Quenette going forward, she said: Undergo cultural competency training, reevaluate orientation curriculum to include more diversity support and pair up with a faculty mentor."
And this is what they do to you if you're *exonerated!*
The guilty get sent to the dilithium mines on the Penal Planet of Pxozlr.
"The class discussion in question came the day after KU's heated, universitywide town hall forum on race.
"It was sparked by a graduate student posing the question, "What is the best approach to talk about that event and these issues with our students?" according to the letter."
Again, it was a case of "go ahead and talk about race, what are you, chicken?"

Nice, I liked that
Keep your eyes peeled for some Holy Saturday Lamentations this weekend - I suspect you'll like them, too.
Let me get this straight - it is the mere sound of the word - the combination of the two sounds "nig" and "ger" that is the issue and not the intention behind those sounds??? It's like some biological effect or something - those two sounds made in sequence? Christ, how could I have been so stupid. All this time I thought it was the intended derogatory intention behind the word that was the issue. So if I were to use some other sound or sounds and intend it to mean you are inferior and sub-human, that would be okay right? Just so it doesn't contain those two mouth sounds made in conjunction with each other? I wonder, are those two wound alright to make individually?
Why are you acting like such a negger?

Winston, sitting in a blissful dream, paid no attention as his glass was filled up. He was not running or cheering any longer. He was back in the Ministry of Love, with everything forgiven, his soul white as snow. He was in the public dock, confessing everything, implicating everybody. He was walking down the white-tiled corridor, with the feeling of walking in sunlight, and an armed guard at his back. The longhoped-for bullet was entering his brain.
He gazed up at the enormous face. Forty years it had taken him to learn what kind of smile was hidden beneath the dark moustache. O cruel, needless misunderstanding! O stubborn, self-willed exile from the loving breast! Two gin-scented tears trickled down the sides of his nose. But it was all right, everything was all right, the struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Big Brother.

"Cut the cost of medical care by about 80% -- if not more": opinions?
just glancing at some of it..... looks like nonsense.
first off, the lion's share of medical costs (70%+) are incurred in the last few years of people's lives (or are eaten up by a fraction of people who suffer from severe, lifelong, chronic ailments/or sudden severe ones)
its not simply just 'expensive drugs' and 'expensive procedures' (due to regulation) that are the problem.
its the whole range of 'quality of life' improvements that old people demand, like knee- & hip-replacements, cataract surgery, boatloads of monitoring and therapy and doctor-time, boatloads of diagnostic work to attempt early-detection of cancer (before THAT gets crazy expensive), and on and on and on.
flattening drug costs across borders would have a marginal effect, but would also affect drug-development in negative ways.
as for the whole 'reducing barriers to services'... medical care is where you are. Sure, there might be some cost savings by having specialty docs compete across markets better, but its actually far more complex than it sounds.
basically, it strikes me as wildly oversimplifying reality, pretending that medical costs are inflated *solely* due to regulatory barriers, as opposed to more complex structural economic differences.
some sort of regulatory-flattening might help bring something like 30% reduction in overall costs, but the market for "doctors" is still pretty slow-responding.
There's a lot there that adds extra problems, that's just my surface level read of it.
Thanks!
From the article: ..."after she committed a series of microaggressions in her classroom."
+++++++++++++++
No. She did not commit "microaggresssions." She was merely accused of committing microaggressions.
Microaggressions are by definition "wrongdoings" and she was "cleared of wrongdoing" and "her conduct had not violated any official policies" (both the latter quotes from the article as well).
"Microaggressions" are fictitious SJW bullshit. NOBODY has committed any "microagressions", ever.

thank god, but this situation is utterly absurd. for years i taught a class called 'politics and hip hop.' try doing that in any real way without words like 'nigger' and 'bitch.' actual ideas and debates cannot exist in this academia, which is merely an ideological gulag in which people like quenette and myself have been interned.

My guess is these 8 students were failing, or had poor grades at least, and asked her to change them. When she said no, they consulted with the local semantics Soviet on what they could do to retaliate against her, which would explain the disjointed fruit salad of complaints.
*Nigger* is mostly a pejorative term like *cunt* or *fag* that are taboo words like say *damn* used to be. People use these words to convey contempt for nearly anything and mostly for things that are neither African-American, vaginal or homosexual.
Listen to a room full of people with Tourette's and you'll see what I mean.
I always thought that it is wrong to talk about your political views at work, especially when you get to deal with people and, especially if this is students we are talking about. Deal with custom essay writing but not with the politics. Students are so passionate. And now you see what wrong words can do to you. Maybe the words are not wrong, but they were definitely said in a very wrong place. I guess we should forbid discussing politics at some places, like schools, colleges and universities, for example. I hope she will not get fired, after all
