Now this is a worthwhile investment...
Nigerian government pays 23,846 workers who don't exist
Pikers compared to you-know-who, probably.
Hitler?
Voldemort?
Mayor Daley?
The great state of Illinois?
How many is the USA paying?
Hello.
"The Rolling Stones are performing a free concert in Havana, Cuba, later this month."
The decadence tour.
The place has been frozen in time for like fifty years, so the Stones probably qualify as a hip new act down there.
Talk about giving new life to 'Satisfaction (I can't get no)' and 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Gimme Shelter' and 'Torn and Frayed' and 'Let it bleed', 'Emotional Rescue' and...
And as a bonus, when the show is over the band can walk into a clinic and get some free health care.
It's really just so Keith Richards can visit the Santeria guy who keeps his mortal husk walking this earth.
Funny you should mention that, I just helped them out with some bank transfers they were having difficulty with.
Hey, I helped those guys out with some bank transfers too. This sounds a bit suspicious.
Funny you should mention that, I just helped them out with some bank transfers they were having difficulty with.
Non-existent Nigerians or the Rolling Stones?
They learned stuff like this from the master of graft USA!, USA!, USA!, USA! Or did we learn it from them?
Hilldawg and Trump. I hope you're proud of yourself, America.
It is New York's time to shine!
I'll just leave this here.
Rubio won MN, but Cruz got the same number of delegates in MN as Rubio.
The Greeks will be so jealous.
Shouldn't surprise anyone if the right/Nazi/nationalists etc. play/feed off that angle.
Congratulations on having the 1st eligible comment on AM links.

Finally got around to reading your book. About 25% in. Great read!

High-schoolers and grandmas waited overnight outside the Supreme Court in the hopes of hearing oral arguments today in the Court's first big abortion case in almost a decade.
Hardest hit?
Waiting for some oral... Yeah, btdt...
Well, they would have been grandmas...

"Overnight outside"?! Child and senior abuse!
Loved watching Senator Venezuela #CrashAndBern last night. Anybody have any good Bern victim tears?
They're still delusional
The condescension towards minorities was pretty bad. I saw:
- if only they were more educated they would understand his policies
- they are voting against their interests
- AAs are anti-semitic
- the south is backwards
Do you have a link to anyone arguing the South is backwards because Bernie lost the Democratic primary? Because I'd love to read a Democrat effectively arguing that their own primary voters (a huge percentage of whom are black in the south) are stupid.
Was reading the 538.com comments of the coverage.
http://fivethirtyeight.com/liv.....tion-2016/
Have to scroll down a bit.
None yet for me. Most of my Bernie-supporting friends are either silent or annoyed but resigned to Hillary getting the nomination.
My Berniebots made the smooth transition over the last two weeks from "We need to vote Bernie!" to "Whatever happens, we cannot let Trump in the White House." We all know that like 95% of them are Ready for Hillary.
So, just how much Cialis do you have to take, and what else should go in your pharmaceutical cocktail, to make you ready for Hillary?
US Uncut is framing it as a BERNIE SWEEPS FOUR STATES, ON TO VICTORY.
I can't understand why they love him so much. What is the appeal there? Well i know free stuff...but he is like a savior
Because he's unconventional in an election whose hallmark is popular anger against politics as usual, and because he's stubbornly principled* in a government where principles are as rare as a SugarFree story that isn't a horrifying travesty.
*His principles are dumb and wrong, but damn if he doesn't cling to them.
Considering what an incredible hack Clinton is, and how actually sincere Sanders is, it's not at all surprising to me that many Democrats are going for him.
He's my grandmother's first choice now that Jeb is out of the race. That pretty much sums it up in my mind.
My grandmother can't decide between Trump and Bernie, so there's that.
If she is in a home in NC she'll likely vote Clinton in the general. Have an aunt there who has been loading up the memory care ward in a bus to vote D. Most of them think they're voting for Truman
I don't think he is all that sincere personally. He is a demagogue.
I don't think that squares with his actual record.
Let's see he has said:
- reverse climate change
- private prisons have led to mass incarceration
- Medicare for all will save 324B a year on drugs (when the US spent 305B) in 2014
- Glass Steagall was one of the reasons for financial crisis
- putting random people on the federal reserve board
- 23 types of deodorant
- medicare for all will save average person 5K/year (just like Obama 2500/year)
- 23 cent gender gap is due to discrimination
Yeah, but he seems to sincerely believe all of that. Which doesn't mean he's not also a demagogue.
See i guess i have hard time understanding that he actually believes that when it is so easy to verify. Then again i suppose his supporters do believe that.
Just wouldnt expect a US senator to be that dumb
Just wouldnt expect a US senator to be that dumb
That's on you, man.
They are True Believers, Tornado. Socialists are predisposed to join cults of personality.
Welcome aboard, btw. Enjoying your comments.
Just like Romney, there this idea on the left that Obama was too mainstream of a choice, that if a true idealogue had been elected, then all their legislative fantasies would have come true.
The Bernie frenzy is their unconscious acknowledgment that Obama was a shitty President.
The Bernie frenzy is their unconscious acknowledgment that Obama was a shitty President.
Consciously, of course, they're arguing that it's Republican racism that kept Obama from being as awesome as he should have been.
US Uncut - Is that a Jewish political advocacy group?
Seems anti-semetic to me.
Yeah but it's hard to feel too great when there are cheering lunatics #readyforhillary
Middle Ground: How Trump plotted a general election strategy from the start
Trump's position?that people paid into the program and deserve to reap the benefits
I agree with Trump on this. Cut the generational welfare and layoff about 99% of government parasites. Stop punishing middle class tax payers and make the government employees who created this mess feel the pain.
And junk about 90% of the regulations, so we can start recreating some of the millions and millions of jobs the left has killed and driven out of the country.
You want to cut the generational welfare, but you think people "paid into" SS?
It's in a trust fund, just waiting for him.
LOCK BOX!
Indeed - the money taken that wasn't spent on SS benefits or whatever was used for other government spending. There is no 'fund'.
That said, current recipients probably shouldn't be cut along with anyone, say, within 5 years of 'retirement'. If you are 6-10 years away, you'll get a cut. if you are 11-15 years away - a bigger cut. 16-20 years - bigger cut. More than 20 years - you're on your own but you also shouldn't have to make 'contributions'.
GWB tried that in 2005 and it was a no-go. With a Republican House and a divided Senate.
I understand - it won't happen politically. It's too bad, beasue you could salvage them and make them actually sustainable. But since you can't, they will go on until everyone gets nothing.
Thanks for beating me to the comment, Nikki. Thanks a lot.
Trump hasn't plotted bupkis. He has ranted and raved and, lucky for him, the timing was good. But that's all it was, luck.
I think it's at least as much about pure creature cunning as it is luck. Trump is a clown, but he knows he's a clown, and most of his supporters do too - just like Bernie, he's a middle finger gleefully waved at the establishment by simple folks who are sick of business as usual.
I had, lamely, hoped the middle finger would be Paul...and more Massie, Amash and the like in Congress.
*sigh*
People who genuinely believe in meaningfully shrinking the government seldom are able to reconcile their principles with becoming part of it, Swiss.
This is why agorism is possibly the best path to an actual libertarian society.
Not enough fist pounding and yelling
I'm sure Trump also realizes that many of his constituents use PP for primary OB/GYN care.
Ouch! But I don't think they're constituents until he's elected; more like supporters or base.
Why "ouch"? I'm not making an abortion joke. His supporters are poor, right, and many get some kind of assistance. I bet he knows they use PP.
And I stand by "constituents."
"Ouch," as in the truth hurts. I yield to you on the usage thing.
Come on, Tonio, you know better. Never get involved in a ground war in Asia, and never go up against Nikki when grammar is on the line.
many of his constituents use PP for primary OB/GYN care
I really don't know: How much primary care does PP actually provide? I've never run into a PP operation that had any real scale as far as health care providers went, but that's anecdotal.
Conservatives believe deeply in shrinking the size of government...

Exactly. My same friends who eat "organic" because fertilizer and pesticides are bad for you, m'kay, think nothing of throwing organic manure on crops to get them to grow.

Well of course pickling them is the only use for these vegetables. Are you not allowed to cook by court order?

Japanese cucumber and seaweed salad?
Unfortunately, being Japanese, they have subbed sea cucumber for actual cucumber.
Not at the sushi place near my house. It is tasty.
The appeal of a blunt-force weapon is compelling, but I think Nikki would find a cucumber insufficient for the job.

I was with a group of my nice clean-cut looking white friends walking down Avenue A to go clubbing one time and we were all drinking something or other out of paper bags when a cop walks by, arrests us, and locks us up.
Ha ha, just kidding. He told us to finish up and toss it in the trash.
Huh, it was just on Monday night that I thought about sitting outside with a glass of whiskey as I had a celebratory smoke. Decided to play it safe and dig out my flask.

Wall Street's big short: President Donald J. Trump
What nonsense. The market was up UUUUGE while Trump was wiping the floor with his rivals yesterday.
The delegate shake out for elephants last night: Trump 255 Cruz 215 Rubio 100 Kasich 21 Other 7 3 not yet allocated.
Yeah, all this talk about Trump's "winning" all these states is overblown. It's all about the delegates. Yes, he "won" Virginia, but he only picked up one delegate more than Rubio, who had a "terrible night," did. Two thirds of Republican voters are still saying no to Trump. More than that in states where you have to actually be a Republican to vote for him.
Unless the "not Trump" vote coalesces around a single candidate, it won't matter.
Someone commented that the GOP's rule changes to stop the Ron Paul campaign's "shenanigans" are going to come back to bite them in the ass. It'd be nice if Reason took a break from their breathless opinion pieces and did some reporting on that.
I don't know. I think Cruz's supporters would be more likely to go to Trump than to Rubio. I think the party's goal right now is for the vote to be split enough that it goes to a brokered convention. I suspect that's why Kasich is still in the race. There's no way in hell he wins the ordinary delegate count, but he can be a powerbroker at the convention if it comes to that. The risk, of course, is that if Trump comes out of the primaries with a strong plurality of delegates, but is denied the nomination based on what amounts to a technicality, his supporters might go into full-on revolt and prompt a third-party bid.
I think the party's goal right now is for the vote to be split enough that it goes to a brokered convention.
Even with all the goofy delegate allocation rules, Trump leads all other Repub candidates combined in the delegate count.
True. I would expect that to change as more closed primaries and winner-take-all elections occur.
I'm not sure if this is right but one of my buddies pointed out that, assuming Trump doesn't get a critical mass before then, the best thing the GOP can do is actually KEEP him in the race until May when nearly all of the the third-party filing deadlines will have passed. The deadline for Texas is in like 3 weeks.
Someone commented that the GOP's rule changes to stop the Ron Paul campaign's "shenanigans" are going to come back to bite them in the ass.
Yeah, that was me. The GOP established two important rules, basically--the nominee has to win the majority in at least eight states, and has to win 1,237 delegates. After March 15th, the states go to winner take all. The idea was to coalesce support around a candidate quickly so that the party machine could focus on taking out Hillary. The plan early was for Jeb to get some early wins via the "splitter" strategy with all the various candidates so they'd drop out fast and give him momentum for the winner take all states. Trump bullied him right out of the race, so the establishment's only hope is that Rubio can peel off enough supporters from Cruz and Kasich to go to a brokered convention and either have him as the nominee or have someone like Romney or even Jeb as the final choice if there are multiple ballots. If that happens, a lot of Trump's voters will stay home and the GOP nominee has to bank on the remainder hating Hillary more than they hate the GOP nominee to even have a hope in hell of making a run.
Your numbers look a bit off: http://www.realclearpolitics.c.....count.html
Last night vs total.
The "Date" column in that table is confusing at first.
The fact that the page failed to load any data was more confusing for me.
I think it's the work proxy. So I blame zScalar.
Cruz needs to offer Rubio the vp slot. Get the Rubio votes in some upcoming winner take all states and put trump away.
I think that's their best case.
I wont vote for him in the general, but I will caucus for Cruz in KY if its still in doubt to defeat Trump.
Regardless, I am assuming I am voting for GJ in November.
Yes, do not take these strategy ideas as a sign of support. I was a Paul or LP, still am.
Let me change my pants...
Nato commander: Isis 'spreading like cancer' among refugees
I seem to recall saying this was going to happen when this whole thing started. And Cytoxic, Nikki and many others on here informed me I was delusional and only someone who hated Muslims could possibly think ISIS would put terrorists into the refugee groups.
Not saying it isn't happening, but this is also what I'd expect a NATO commander to say in order to procure funding and protect his phoney baloney job.
I think the NATO commander has every reason to say the opposite. I doubt his political masters are too happy with him saying that. If he was going to lie it would be lying and pretending it wasn't happening not lying and pretending it was.
^This.
Yeah, the military normally is clamoring for money and often use the boogeyman to do it but the role of NATO commander is arguably the most political military role in the world. He has a lot of masters to appease and most of them are not going to like this message.
You have to be a special kind of door knob to not think this is happening. To what degree I can't say or assess but it's not impossible this is not taking place. It's a God-send for ISIS and other groups I would think.
If they are not doing it then we are truly blessed and fortunate to be fighting against the stupidest motherfuckers on the planet.
Your detractors seem to have disappeared.Don't worry you'll comment somewhere else and they will summon the courage to attack a straw man.
It's all strawmen, baby.

Oh fucking bullshit. Like the US bombing a different group of rebels is so much better. Or is it that the US arming and equipping rebels somehow didn't exacerbate the conflict?
Maybe I'm just searching for reasons not to kill myself or flee the country, but I see a glimmer of sanity in a couple things from last night's results
1) The South is still rejecting socialism. Even if that means voting for Hillary, the fact that socialists haven't completely overtaken the Democratic party is a good thing.
2) So far, Trump has won only one state (NV caucus) that has a closed primary. The majority of the states so far have been open, but that changes after this week. Maybe he'll start to convince actual Republicans to vote for him, now that he has Christie as his toady, but I wouldn't be so sure. I think the next couple weeks will be good for Cruz and/or Rubio.
The trick is to not tip over the chair reaching for the Chips Ahoy at the back of the pantry.

Yeah but...
"Nabisco says the name is "a reference to the nautical term, Ships Ahoy!". The words "Chips Ahoy!" also feature prominently in a story appearing in Chapter 15 of "The Uncommercial Traveller", by Charles Dickens.[2] Dickens relays a childhood tale of a shipwright, named Chips, who is taunted by a diabolical talking rat who predicts the sinking of Chips's ship: "Chips ahoy! Old boy! We've pretty well eat them too, and we'll drown the crew, and will eat them too!" There is also a 1956 American animated theatrical short titled Chips Ahoy."

Good morning all. Forgo the HyR collective political angst over Super Tuesday for a few minutes and enjoy some Bo Diddley.

Not that anyone gives a shit - but my derp armor is wearing thin and needs some time to restore itself. The world seems to be beating on my sense of what is right and what is wrong so I'll be taking a break from H&R for a spell so I can concentrate on this yuuuge EDI project I was given.

Surprisingly poignant quote.
You'll be missed!
Remember, these are the same people who spent 2008 and 2012 shilling for McCain and Romney. Yet, they are now completely sure that nominating someone who isn't a real conservative is the end of the world.
Do they honestly think everyone else is that stupid?
Yep. And, apparently, with good reason.
That Twitter feed is gold. My God are those people pathetic.
Interesting, I've only seen him saying Rubio and Cruz can't stop hitting Trump because they can still take it to a brokered convention.
That was my impression as well.
It seems like 90% of the people who read Cooke's feed don't understand what he's arguing.
A brokered convention will guarantee a victory for Hillary. Guar. An. Tee.
Assuming she's still in the race, of course.

Assuming Gawker even makes a profit, which is hardly certain, what do you think the profit margin is for even the best run and most profitable media site? I don't know but given the state of the media business model I can't imagine it is very high.
How long before Gawker goes belly up after the union demands destroy any hope of sustaining the company? A year? Six months? These people are going to find out that "korporashuns" really don't print their own money.
Gawker has historically made tons of money because they're pure clickbait and have like 20 websites.
Their hit count has been plummeting though, so they don't look to be in the best shape currently.
I suspect one of the reasons Gawker made a ton of money is they paid low salaries and kept costs down. Even if they could get the clicks back, I bet they still won't be able to make the union happy and stay in business.
That's a good point. Most Gawker writers probably get paid absolute shit, especially in New York.
After all, Gawker writers (in this case Adam Weinstein) have written hilarious articles about how fucking poor they are. Includes Adam Weinstein's hilarious lack of economic understanding.
"You have no idea about student debt, underemployment, life-long renting. "Stop feeling special" is some shitty advice. I don't feel special or entitled, just poor. The only thing that makes me special is I have more ballooning debt than you. I've tempered the hell out of my expectations of work, and I've exceeded those expectations crazily to have one interesting, exciting damned career that's culminated in some leadership roles for national publications. And I'm still poor and in debt and worked beyond the point where it can be managed with my health and my desire to actually see the son I'm helping to raise."
Yes, past generations know nothing about debt, trouble finding work, or long-term renting. Adam Weinstein is as intelligent as he is handsome.
Oh God, I forgot how awesome this is.
"The latter maxim lurks in the heart of every critique of millennials. It assumes that if we're worse off than previous generations, the fault is ours, and our complaints are so much white whine. We should shut up and be content, because we do work less than our forebears, and spend more time enraptured by our own navels, trying to divine some life-affirming creative direction in them."
He's writing a navel-gazing, whiny article that is so poorly written no one ever would have paid him for it before internet clickbait allowed any idiot to publish anything while complaining that people think his generation is a bunch of whiny navel-gazers. Hilarious.
Someone needs to tell these people that writing stupid propaganda for a living is something rich kids or bohemians who are okay with living like hobos do. Sorry, unless you have inherited the money, you don't get to be a hack writer and live a middle class life.
They also don't realize that the established journalists who do make a decent living are the ones who cut their teeth for years or even decades building up beats and cultivating sources so that they know the angles to pursue on stories. They did real, actual work in contrast to Gawker and Buzzfeed which mostly just waste bandwidth writing glorified op-eds filled with middle school snark.
Guys like Weinstein embody every negative stereotype about millennials--spoiled, pampered hothouse flowers who expect to be paid enough money to live an upper-middle class lifestyle for doing nothing more demanding at work than elementary school recess. They all think they're the LeBron James of the journalist world when they're the Scott Hastings or Joe Klein, at best, because they had their asses kissed by their relatives and loved ones during their formative years. yeah, they have a point about how expensive it is to get a college degree, but they're just as guilty of enabling the system with their constant agitation for "more money for dem programs!"
Yeah, Gawker does so well, Denton hides his money in the Caymans and tax havens all over the world.
And, John, it's the Hulk Hogan lawsuit that might put an end to them...
That is what I hear. I never was a big wrestling fan but man am I rooting for Hulkster these days.
The other great thing about the Hulk lawsuit is that Gawker may go broke over publishing a stolen sex tape of Hulk Hogan after having a case of the vapors over all the poor rich white girls who were victimized by the frapening. I guess only attractive, rich white women are entitled to privacy.
There was also an attractive rich white woman in the video, which makes the hypocrisy even more awesome.
Pro-tip: don't say anything racist in your sex tapes if you don't want Gawker to ruin your career.
Please write a love story between Hamilton Nolan and Nick Denton as they try to save Gawker from being destroyed by their Union.
I'd like to point out that Chris Christie's major impact on presidential politics has consisted of hugging Obama, torching Rubio days before dropping out, and becoming Trump's lackey.
I can't think of anyone who has managed to do this much damage to his own party without actually winning the presidency.
You're just trying to get to me like the fat bastard.
I hate Christie's gut for that big smooch he gave Obama. We should not kid ourselves, however. Obama won the election. Most people in this country don't hate Obama or if they do didn't hate Obama then.
Trump is reality using a two by four on the faces of movement conservatives. I don't always agree with Libertarians but they at least understand they are a minority. Movement conservatives have actually convinced themselves they are some kind of silent majority and if a candidate just tells the country "but the fetesus" and "low taxes" and of course "I am a conservative" long enough and with enough conviction the great silent majority will rise up and carry them to victory.
They hysterical NRO twitter feed that LH links to above is the sound of the board hitting those people's faces. They don't seem to be taking it very well.

Obama's got an approval rating below water and has for years. He's unpopular with both Republicans and independents, it's just that the Democratic party is a fucking cult and he's still got 80%+ support from those dimwits.
No but he won the election. I honestly don't think anyone outside of people like you and me, who are most certainly in the minority and a small minority, give a fuck about Christie doing that. In fact, most people likely consider it a good thing because it shows Christie is bipartisan.
Most people are not ideologues or care enough about politics to be one if they wanted to be.
True. His hit on Rubio probably mattered more than his Obama hug.

The idea that the support he showed Obama somehow turned the election is delusional. Romney's campaign was dead well before that whole incident.

Yeah, I think that's a big part of the whole meltdown by the NRO types. For decades, they had convinced themselves that there supporters were a group of principled believers who were above the personality cults and partisan demagoguery typical of the left. Turns out they were way off.
There is that and there is the really horrible fact that they are in fact nothing like they they claim to be. The people are NRO have for years happily shilled for any crap weasel the GOP threw up. For them now to claim they have principles shows a real lack of self awareness. Moreover, while they might not buy into personality cults, they most certainly have bought into the cult that is the GOP and have been seduced by the power associated with it.
I understand that NRO might not support Trump. But to go as over the top insane about him as they have shows that they care more about serving their GOP masters than they do about any principles or truth telling.
I stopped reading NRO after the went all in for Maverick in '08 and then blamed RINOs for not lining up to kiss the ring of the guy they hated until he was the guy.
Well, so far, the majority has voted against Trump.
Heh. And remember in the early days of the 2012 primaries when the Republicans were begging him to run? Good times....

Religion of Peace news:
On January 4, 2011, Salmaan Taseer was assassinated in Islamabad by his security guard, Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, who disagreed with Taseer's opposition to Pakistan's blasphemy law.
Taseer had publicly defended a Christian woman who was accused of blasphemy against Islam. His bodyguard killed him for this.
Muslims protested for Qadri's release after his arrest. Muslim supporters of the Sunni Tehreek religious party hold placards in support for Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the gunmen detained for the killing of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, in Hyderabad January 9, 2011.
This week Pakistani officials hung Mumtaz Qadri for assassinating the moderate governor.
TENS OF THOUSANDS of Muslim supporters attended Qadri's funeral today in Rawalpindi.

Anyone else notice that Facebook commenters are the dumbest people on the internet?
Censor their posts and it might take them years to notice.
You need to visit the youtubes, Ken.

"The European Union has voted in favor of a large-scale aid package to help Syrian migrants trapped in places like Greece and Italy."
And if that doesn't keep them out, what will they do?
Send them even more money?
They really have a fundamental misunderstanding of why the "refugees" are flooding into their countries, despite being farther away than dozens of other countries not embroiled in war. Never do they stop to ponder why these migrants continue onward past Turkey, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Hungary, the Caucuses et cetera, despite those places being free of armed conflicts. Because those places are paying them, aren't subsidizing them or in the case of Angela Merkel, aren't actively promising them other people's money on television.
Hey guess what? Lou Reed turns 63 today! I wonder how he'll celebrate?

OT: one of the dangers of being self employed is that you can slack off sometimes, and no one will notice. Seriously.
That can be a danger, but sometimes slacking off is the most productive thing you can do.
It's like with goalies in hockey. Rest is ammunition.
This is entirely true. I did a lot of freelance writing and would like to make a career of it, but one thing I've learned is that I'd have to buy a new computer and make my spare bedroom into an "office" so that I'd know that it's time to work when I sit down in there. It's just too difficult for me to stay focused when I'm in my living room on my "recreational" computer.
Question: who would the rich libs vote for if it was Bern vs Trump?
We all know they are only generous and like high taxes on others. I think their "compassion" for people with less is really more contempt such that the lessers can thank the nobles and it boosts the nobles ego. And them calling other people greedy, selfish, not caring is really projection on their part
Thoughts?
If they are true believers, Bernie. Anyone not over that hard left line will go trump.
If it comes to that.
This.
I think that even though some Democrats are spewing venom at either Bernie or Hillary, they'll pull the blue lever on election day no matter who the nominee is. At the end of the day, it's about supporting the team.

*squints at Rufus, begins reading concussion protocol*
My wife and others assure me I'm beyond concussion protocols.
Remember in the warly 90s when the football concussion protocol was (and I think this is a true story about Troy Aikmen):
"Hey Troy, you ready to get back in the game?"
"Yeah, let me go ask my mom"
"Take his helmet away, he's done for a whole."
"Camp Ripley"
Brrr.....
Or is it a "Fort" yet?

I recall a fair number of 5' 10" blondes, mostly at least 150 pounds or more.
