Conservative Student Says Faculty Made Him Quit Writing Program for Not Supporting 'Safe Space'
At Pomona College, social justice strikes again.

Is the purpose of Pomona College's Writing Center to help students improve their writing skills, or to push left-wing language and causes on them? A conservative student recently resigned his position as an instructor in the program after faculty advisers accused him of being an "obstacle" to the creation of a safe space.
The student, Steven Glick, accused Writing Center leadership of harassing him because of his political views. Glick is editor-in-chief of the right-leaning student publication, The Claremont Independent, and has been critical of protesters at the Claremont family of colleges in California (Pomona is one such institution).
His written opinions on these subjects clashed with the center's goal of creating a safe space, according to coordinators Katherine Snell and Pamela Bromley. Glick was eventually instructed to read a series of leftist social justice articles, including "Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy." That sounds like an interesting read, but not a terribly relevant one for Glick's job.
Glick apparently believes the Writing Center should mostly function in accordance with its mission—which is to assist students who want to become better writers. His supervisors take a different view, he wrote:
My peers have proposed their ideas for a new Writing Center mission statement, noting that we should aspire to "provide a space for students to work through their ideas with fellows trained in a writing pedagogy that considers how race, gender, sexuality, language, national-origin, and socioeconomic status influences and affects those ideas," "educate ourselves so that we better understand oppression, liberation, and dynamics of difference and power as they manifest themselves in the Writing Center," and "acknowledge and interrogate the ways in which the Writing Center, Pomona College, and academia itself perpetuate and have perpetuated injustice and oppression." I told Ms. Snell that, in my opinion, the goal of the Writing Center should remain unchanged: to provide "students with a community of experienced readers and writers, offering free, one-on-one consultations at any stage of the writing process—from generating a thesis and structuring an argument to fine-tuning a draft."
Glick was subsequently placed on probation. He suspects one of the students he was tutoring had complained about him—deliberately set him up for failure because she dislikes his political views. According to Glick, she dressed as "White Supremacy" last Halloween. Her friends attended a party as "Steven Glick and his White Fragility."
Glick has since resigned his position. "It has become clear that the Writing Center is harassing me because of my political beliefs," he wrote.
I reached out to the administrators of the Writing Center to ask whether they had any response to this charge. I did not immediately receive a response.
It's of course possible that there's more to the story: perhaps Glick was merely bad at his job. His writing seems polished and thoughtful to me, but I can't tell whether he was an effective teacher.
However, it looks like his bosses presumed that he couldn't possibly be a good teacher unless he eagerly accepted their far-left political views. Is no corner of the American college campus safe from the influence of social-justice-obsessed activists?

Is no corner of the American college campus safe from the influence of social-justice-obsessed activists?
Yes.
Its funny that, while technically correct, most people will take that answer to mean that, yes, there are corners of campuses safe from SJWs.
Students are allowed to shut the door when they go to the bathroom? WHAT ARE THEY HIDING?!?
Can we finally just exterminate the progtarded rats? Or are we going to let things become even more surrealistic and absurd by allowing their continued existence? At least blacklist, or imprison them.
It really seems to be getting to that point, doesn't it?
Pomona College is a private institution. They can set whatever rules they want. This is on Steven Glick for choosing to go to such a retarded institution. Why the hell would you want to stay at a place where you are not wanted? This is the same situation as a baker that doesn't want to bake a cake for a gay wedding. In both cases, people are exercising their property rights.
+1
I hear the faculty at Mormon seminaries are almost exclusively Mormon.
So what?
It's a private institution. They shouldn't have to hire Catholics if they don't want to. Or atheists who believe abortions should be free of charge.
That seems irrelevant to me, unless the policy of the Pomona college is "we will fire anyone who expresses any negative opinion of our program"
Glick is allowed to write opinion pieces that's critical of the college's programs. On his blog, on the school's newspaper, etc. He's not physically sabotaging or hindering the "safe space program". I worked as a part time writing tutor at a college and I've never heard of the admin there FORCING instructors to read materials because they had contrarian opinions. The guy has grounds of a lawsuit if that's not set policy.
A private company (or the state) should not compel you to engage in speech that's offensive nor dismiss you because you merely expressed an opinion against company policy. In a perfectly libertarian state, I should be able to fire anyone for any reason. But we don't live one. If I can't fire you because you said pro gay things, then I can't fire you if you are against company policy and write about it.
Correction: he is allowed to write opinion pieces on his personal/private blog. If he wants them on the school's newspaper, or other school-sponsored places, then he need the school's permission. He is entitled to his opinion, not to a platform.
"Is no corner of the American college campus safe from the influence of social-justice-obsessed activists?"
I'm not sure private colleges should be a safe space for non-social justice warriors.
Where are we going to stop with this? Is Robby going to go after Bob Jones University? They kick students out of school for possession of pornography.
I have no doubt they have an agenda at Bob Jones University, and any faculty that deviate from it are probably dismissed.
But that's okay. They're a private university. They can do what they want.
Claremont Colleges is a private institution, isn't it? If they want to kick out all the non-social justice warriors or all the heterosexuals, they should be free to do that from a libertarian perspective, right?
And if Bob Jones University wants to exclude people for breaking the ten commandments--as they see them--that's none of our business, is it?
When we stop differentiating between the public sphere and the private sphere, we really are in a lot of trouble.
What business is it of ours if the social justice warriors at a private university want to kick out all the non-social justice warriors? Are we all about accommodation now? Accommodation on the basis of political ideology?!
Not this libertarian.
I agree that private colleges should be able to push whatever message they wish.
I add to that that we should not be providing any student loans with public taxpayer money, so that private schools must earn their students' hard-won tuitions by sticking to the basics of helping their graduates get hired for jobs, rather than having enough income to be able to hire SJWs who teach skills not useful in producing real goods and services.
The other side of that argument is that private universities shouldn't necessarily give up their right to make whatever policies they want--just becasue their customers are borrowing from the government.
Otherwise the government could take over everything in the private sphere just because it was handing out money. For a President like Obama, that's a dream come true.
That's the way it worked with him on the banking front. They forced some of those banks to take TARP money, and refused to let them pay it back until they passed some stress test. In the meantime, they used the fact that the banks had taxpayer money as an excuse to regulate the banks like the government owned them.
In a world where politicians get elected by promising to pay for more and more "free" stuff, I don't want to make it easy for the government to shrink the private sphere just because they decide to start paying for something.
To a certain extent, it's like that with the hospital system, too. You can't be accredited and licensed to operate without a Medicare / Medicaid contract--and you're prohibited from refusing to treat Medicare and Medicaid patients. Then they use the fact that you accept Medicare and Medicaid to justify doing whatever they want to you.
We have to draw a line somewhere, or eventually we'll all be working for the government.
Used an SBA loan to buy a building for your businesses? Now all you base are belong to us!
"Used an SBA loan to buy a building for your businesses? Now all you base are belong to us!
Meanwhile, to protect the solvency of the banking system during the recession*, the government is making it all but impossible for banks to lend to small businesses (to refinance out of an adjustable rate loan)--unless they get approval from the SBA to guarantee their loan!
*allegedly
Some modern university degrees are like donuts for breakfast: they fill your tummy but they fill it with empty, non-nutritious calories that give you a sugar high that quickly wears off. These degree plans leave their graduates intellectually fat and lazy, and willing to blame others for their lack of success.
Heliogabalus and the Three Faces of Lucifuge Rofocale
I remember learning about him in secondary one or two. He left quite the impression:
"...Heliogabalus lived in Rome as an oriental despot and, giving himself up to detestable sensual pleasures, degraded the imperial office to the lowest point by most shameful vices, which had their origin in certain rites of oriental naturalistic religion..."
Fricken Syrian refugees.

""educate ourselves"
Would people pay more to see your browsing history or to not see your browsing history?
i was looking for a visual representation of what the Pomona faculty meant by "educat[ing] ourselves so that we better understand oppression, liberation, and dynamics of difference and power as they manifest themselves"
it sure as fuck has nothing to do with "writing better".
re: browsing history =
my youtube "recommends" are always horribly screwed up by the things people link to here. I feel this is just me sharing the love right back.
Tolerant people do not tolerate intolerance.
Intolerant people must be oppressed to prevent them from oppressing others.
Inclusiveness means excluding intolerant oppressors.
"I reached out to the administrators of the Writing Center... "
Please find a writing center that well teach you to use "contact" instead of "reach out".
Ah, Muphry's Law strikes again.
Behold!
It's God's my punishment for smartassery.
"that well teach you to use"
Lol
"Reach out" is a time-honored phrase
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO17B-ACRn0
Why use two words when one suffices?
Because a) Rico Suave gets paid by the word and b) the fancy verbiage looks better to potential employers.
So is "reach around"
Yeah, but that one's fun.
"Reach out" is a time-honored phrase
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO17B-ACRn0
Reach out to a squirrel.
Come on girl, reach out for me! I'll be there with a love that will shelter you, and I'll be there with a love that will see you through
I was expecting a call from my own personal jesus there.
"Contact" is itself a kinesthetic reference. Do people actually _physically contact_ each other when corresponding over the telephone?
The utterly nitpicky way to write the above would have been:
I initiated communications with the administrators of the Writing Center...."
"""Is the purpose of Pomona College's Writing Center to help students improve their writing skills, or to push left-wing language """
So it gotten worse then when many years ago I was in college. Then the writing teacher only wanted me to write about my feelings. As a young man writing about my feelings was not my strong suit and that was my worse class
Strange since then none of my employers wanted me to write about my feelings

Just don't pull that shit at Yale!!
I'm relieved to know that only Goodthink, and not Badthink, will be permitted in the Writing Center. It would be Bad if any unapproved Think was allowed to become writing, the power of which can grievously wound a person.
If only.
What about Pimpthink?
A Pimp's thought is different from that of a square.

"Gainesville police officers responded to an assault call at a pool supply store around 11:30 a.m. and found Williams outside "lying on the ground with his hands behind his back as though he was ready to go to jail," Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said."
Seems as though Katt knows the drill. At least he didn't get shot while resisting arrest.

I believe that Katt Williams has said publicly that when the police come around, he does exactly that, 'cause he don't wanna get shot.

Yes I am aware that she is a woman, doesn't mean she can't be a deluded BernieBro. And are you trying to imply that I'm some shill for Hillary? I was mentioning the amount of times he's favored intervention as a negative, not a positive.
Everyone is saying "Gabbard this" and "Gabbard that". But no one is saying "Worship this" and "Jericho that"

""I think it's most important for us, as we look at our choices as to who our next commander in chief will be, is to recognize the necessity to have a commander in chief who has foresight, who exercises good judgment," Gabbard, a U.S. representative for Hawaii, said on NBC's "Meet the Press.""
The last Democratic President with good judgment was Grover Cleveland, and he tried to avoid annexing Hawaii.
Smelly Hawaiins............
I'm actually in a hotel room in Honolulu right now. Bizness, not fun. Otherwise, why would I be on the Interwebz?
"Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy." That sounds like an interesting read...
Does it?
I'm sure it would produce some laughs.
That definitely sounds like the title of a religious text.
Is that the sequel to 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'?
I took one for the team and read it. As much as that word vomit could be considered something one can read. It touches on the oh-so-hot-at-the-time topic of "Indian 'wannabees'" which made me lol because nobody cares about that anymore...
"Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy and the Seven Dwarves"
I like Robby's dry sense of humor.
Bitches, Mo' Bitches and... I can never name the third Pillar.
Bitches, Gunz and Booze? That seems right to me...
Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.
That was a fun interview. For those not wanting to read the entire piece, the three pillars are sugar, crack and yoga pants.
Pot, Mexicans, and ass sex - duh
No, those are the Three Pillars of Reason..some overlap yes...but not the same as White Supremacy(TM).
Their answer would be that the former is dependent on the latter.
Completely O/T: Feck.
If you're a fan, this is real nutpunch.
Actually, "Feck Arse". And I hope I spelled that all correctly.
Requiescat in pace. And I hope the grammar is correct.
Maybe I just associate with people who tend to be anti-SJW, but I have found that the SJW crowd at my school is not particularly prominent. And I go to a school most would categorize as "liberal."
I know only one SJW in real life and everyone thinks she's the village idiot. She is also the one that reporters find and interview whenever something news worthy happens; 30 articulate educated normal individuals standing around-- nope they have to talk to the fat bimbo with the rainbow hair and full body tattoos.
30 articulate educated normal individuals standing around-- nope they have to talk to the fat bimbo with the rainbow hair and full body tattoos.
News is entertainment. Never forget that.
I live in NYC and my circle of mostly 30 and 40-somethings is almost entirely apolitical. There is one woman who turns every conversation into a rant against sexism - nobody can stand her. There are a couple of professional students but it's mostly professionals and small business owners.
Of the two hard-core lefties I know, one lives in SF and the other in Portland.
So... my conclusion is that the SJW phenomenon is limited to youngsters and the left coast. I could be wrong.
This. Imagine knowing religious people and they somehow weave in converting you to Christ in every conversation. It's tedious.
When did you meet my in-laws?
It's definitely tedious, but I much prefer attempted conversions by Christians to attempted beheadings by Islamists. When put in that perspective, the Christians are no longer quite so tedious.
I live in a second-rate (you New Yorkers would probably call rural) midwestern city, and I would say they're a prominent minority among the young educated types, especially from the eastern seaboard or west coast. Every single time I have heard Japan mentioned in a conversation where a female coastal college/grad student was present, said student immediately decided to turn the discussion to how misogynist Japanese people are. Every single time. The first thing they think of when Japan comes to mind is misogyny. They really hate Japan; in any case, that's my litmus test for SJWism. If Japan gets mentioned and someone shouts 'misogyny', SJW.
At any rate, I think the real issue is that, though they aren't the majority, the average person will yield to them if pushed. They know how to dominate conversations and make everyone feel guilty. Most people just don't know enough to known how wrong everything they say is, so they'll agree with it out of shame.
And as long as the bureaucrats and network executives are SJWs, they don't need a majority.
When I think of Japan, the things that come to mind are:
Really reliable and economical cars
Sushi
Tentacle porn
And those are in no particular order.
I don't really agree with this. I think most people avoid the argument not out of shame, but out of embarrassment. Embarrassment over the uncomfortable social situation that is created by vitriolic and personal arguments in public gatherings. Rather than engage these people who cannot have a reasoned discussion on the issues, most people will politely avoid the topic.
We have a hard core SJW on the periphery of our group. Hard core as in she makes her living lecturing on social justice issues. Whenever she shows up, everyone just lets her have her way. It is either that, or watch the entire evening devolve into a heated argument where facts are quickly invented and people who don't agree with her are racists and misogynists. Sure, every once in a great while it is fun to poke the hornet's nest and watch the frenzy of nonsense that spews forth, but it is a once every 18 months kind of thing.
To be fair, we also have a hard-core religious right guy on the periphery of our group. And everyone walks on eggshells around him to avoid being arranged about whatever the latest threat to the American Way of Life is. At least you can get him to move on... and he doesn't usually get into direct, personal attacks.
I would hit her hot buttons until she had a stroke.

"Heteropatriarchy and the Three Pillars of White Supremacy."
Good band name.
Wordy.
That's Warty's cousin, the one who rapes you with hurtspeech.
So Milo Yiannopoulos is Warty's cousin. Interesting.
More like a prog rock release. It's a double album and really boring.

If this were a movie, it would be the start of a Beatrice/Benedict odd-couple romance.
As it is, it's just boring.
"acknowledge and interrogate the ways in which the Writing Center, Pomona College, and academia itself perpetuate and have perpetuated injustice and oppression."
I bet Glick can offer some examples, just not the examples they want.
This is why dirty hippies and other forms of progtards deserve nothing but a nightstick up the side of the head. The moment anyone treated them as anything approaching rational human beings was a step in the wrong direction.
I had a good, snarky comment hammered out but the comment system ate it. In a nutshell, it boiled down to these kids who are being cut undeserved breaks for their writing inadequacies will enter the workforce unprepared and will quickly be let go or shunted to somewhere where they can't do too much harm. They are being harmed much more than they are being helped but at least some holier-than-thou faculty and some snitch students can go home and feel good about themselves.
Hopefully they don't go to work for Yelp.
Yeah I suspect one of the things social justice warriors secretly like about being social justice advocates is that they get out of a lot schoolwork and they get the measure of success for the class reoriented from how compelling their writing is to whatever their minority bonafides are or how passionate they are about social justice or whatever, and then, obviously, their writing is going to be shit.
There are plenty of government jobs to fill.
"it looks like his bosses presumed that he couldn't possibly be a good teacher unless he eagerly accepted their far-left political views. "
yes they did. and since sharing those views is part of their definition of being a good teacher, they were kind of right

"provide a space for students to work through their ideas with fellows trained in a writing pedagogy that considers how race, gender, sexuality, language, national-origin, and socioeconomic status influences and affects those ideas"
Serious question: What do these people mean by "work through their ideas"?
Self-criticism, "struggle sessions," whatever the commies are calling it nowadays.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't mean express them in writing in a logical, coherent, and grammatically correct manner .
Something like cabbage working through your digestive system.
For minorities and women, it means self-pitying sessions; for white males, self-loathing sessions.
Sounds like a defamation lawsuit waiting to happen.
Is there any chance that in the near future, this sort of repurposing will infiltrate other businesses? For instance, might an auto body shop adopt as their new goal fighting injustice & oppression rather than fixing dents? & customers won't be able to do anything about it because every shop will have been so repurposed?
That would make a pretty good Monty Python sketch.
With Michael Palin as the shop manager?
Amd John Cleese as the ever more irritated customer..........
Only when the auto body shops begin to get most of their funding from Government.
Github is a pretty big deal in software development circles and recently hired an SJW who has been stirring up all kinds of shit pushing open source software projects into adopting a code of conduct and trying to get people kicked off of projects who offend her. https://github.com/opal/opal/issues/941
A little late here but what a circlejerk of a thread that was. And then the contributors happily skipped off to a thread that began to lay out the framework for a code of conduct that will eventually get half of them banned/censured. They may be good at writing code but they don't understand shit about human nature.
Why do you suppose the nerd SJWs, deeply defective people themselves but slightly more socially capable, find them such easy targets? The whole critique falls apart when you see the real-world reaction of actual... fearful, awkward tech men.
Going to leave this right here...

Thanks for posting this. I believe it is time for me to pull my code from Github and go elsewhere.
I love the idiocy of this particular quote:
"jdax commented on Jun 18, 2015
Sometimes people have opinions that shouldn't ever be respected or tolerated in any community, no matter what that community is building. And "trans people aren't human" is one of them. Fin."
The irony is obviously lost on jdax that other people have different opinions about what opinions shouldn't ever be respected or tolerated--they may dismiss his views as readily as he dismisses theirs. Some militant religious person could easily say "People who believe that trans people ARE human shouldn't be respected or tolerated in any community" with just as much standing.
Just this past week The Skeptic's Guide to the Universe had a nice discussion on this issue of free speech vs. Social Justice. The atheist/skeptic community is having similar issues with SJW speech police and counter-trolls. The SJW crowd have been working to get people who disagree with their style of feminism banned from atheist and skeptic gatherings. (note that these people are usually feminists, but not SJW-style feminists)
The host attempts to point out that although the extremists in the free speech and SJ camps think there is only black and white with no common ground, there is plenty of room for common ground if people are reasonable. He makes this exact argument, that there are certain views that everyone would agree should not be tolerated - and the real discussion should be over where to draw the line.
Of course what he fails to realize in his attempt at fence-mending is the truth that the goal of the SJW is not to clean up the discourse by eliminating universally rejected views, but to eliminate all disagreement with them. The PC police is just a tool for obtaining power over others, nothing more. This is why there is no room for compromise.

this is kind of unrelated, but has anyone checked out bernie sanders wife's bio?
http://thehill.com/blogs/pundi.....first-lady
the part about her basically resigning because of a climate of "fear and censorship" that developed under her watch was of particular interest.
Jesus, reading about them is terrifying. People talk about how 'different' Bernie's "Democratic" socialism is from the kind of socialism that brought tyranny and misery to half the world, but how? This guy and his wife openly sympathized with the Soviet Union, the Sandinistas, and the Castro regime; both have a reputation for being tyrants in their offices. They look eerily like the same old fashioned socialism the world finally learned to put behind it after the bloodbath that was the 20th century. Or so we hoped.
Isn't Kim Jong Un a democratic socialist?
He is the evolutionary pinnacle of progtardedness.
Were she to become first lady, ? : no White House redecoration, wildflowers, addiction enlightenment, school lunch menus or White House gardens
Bullshit.
This is unreal. It's so meta. They're switching from teaching writing to doing self-criticism about how they and others perpetuate injustice and aggression. Emphasis on "others".
I find this really alarming but it reminds me of how after Infinity and Clear Channel bought up all the FM radio stations and ruined them that the iPod came out and everyone largely abandoned radio. Peak College is now. The prices are ridiculous, people are waking up to how bad of an investment a lot of degrees are, it's ripe for disintermediation via the Internet, and if they also want to stop doing their jobs at the same time these other trends converge then they're helping bring it on and I say good.
I agree. And I hope I spelled that correctly.
^Very much This.
The modern university is become obsolete. It has run its economic and social course and is now old and tired. The Internet will enable its replacement but is not the cause of its replacement.
Universities are the reeducation camps of the Progressive Theocracy.
reading stories like this makes me want to vote for Trump because Fuck You, that's why.
I just want to get some vets and bikers together and do a wealth rough of some proggy college campus. With nightsticks.
Pomona College is a private liberal-arts school. According to the Wikipedia page, it's 2019 academic year (that's three years outs) had a 9.7% acceptance rate, and the non-Hispanic white population at the school is like 40%.
So frankly I don't have sympathy for the kid. Not only is he at a private liberal-arts school, but he's at one that he knew, early in his high school career, was very liberal. And he chose it anyway.
"Is no corner of the American college campus safe from the influence of social-justice-obsessed activists?"
Sure. Go enroll at Brigham Young, Liberty University or Wheaton. There are plenty of colleges that are conservative where you can get kicked out for being gay (and then have them withhold your transcripts so that you can't even easily apply at a new school), be drummed out for not having sufficiently evangelical views, and so-on. And that's okay. Those schools are free to be dicks to their students. And so is Pomona.
