Fast & Furious .50 Caliber Rifle Found at El Chapo's Hideout
Feds reportedly investigating where his guns came from.

Between 2009 and 2011, the Department of Justice (DOJ) allowed 2,000 guns to be bought by criminals in the Phoenix area who were smuggling the weapons to Mexico in order to track the weapons in that country, because why should the DOJ limit itself to enforcing the law within America's borders? Under the program, dubbed Operation Fast & Furious, the DOJ lost track of more than 1,400 of the weapons.
Now, one of those weapons, a .50 caliber rifle capable of taking down helicopters, has been found in the hideout of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, the purported leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel. It is the third time a weapon from Fast & Furious was found at a major Mexican crime scene.
According to Fox News, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) ran the serial numbers on eight of the weapons found in El Chapo's hideout, discovering that the .50 caliber rifle was one of 34 such rifles sent to Mexico under Fast and Furious. Federal agents also told Fox News they were investigating where the guns were purchased.
The specific crimes surrounding El Chapo's capture by Mexican marines in Los Mochis don't involve activity on U.S. soil but the feds appear to be involved in the investigation, par for the course in the U.S. war on drugs, which extends throughout the American continent and world. El Chapo was also named Chicago's "public enemy number one," the first criminal to achieve that designation since Chicago gangster Al Capone was put on the list in the 1920s.
While both Guzman and Capone built their criminal enterprises by taking advantage of a black market formed because of a government prohibition on an intoxicating substance, Guzman is not known to have ever even visited Chicago, and has not linked by authorities to any of the 488 homicides that occurred in Chicago in 2015 or, for that matter, any of the more than 11,000 homicides in Chicago since 1995. Many of the homicides were drug-related, but in that case the "Public Enemy Number One" designation may apply as much to America's drug czar as it does to El Chapo.
But that would require government officials acknowledging the role of their policies in the problem. Just as an honest accounting of how the DOJ came to approve Operation Fast & Furious and why anyone thought it was a good idea to run guns to Mexico would require government officials acknowledging that their mania over gun control led them to a tactic that involved increasing the supply of guns across the border in order to catch far-flung bad guys rather than prevent the export of those guns in the first place.
Yesterday a federal judge ruled the Obama administration could not assert executive privilege when refusing to hand over documents related to Fast and Furious to a congressional committee investigation the operation, and ordered the administration to release documents requested by Congress, which in 2014 held then-Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt over that refusal.
Fast and Furious has not, either, led to any reflection on when federal agencies should run undercover operations and even which ones should be doing so—at least 40 federal agencies now do so.

Hey Lucy...you got some splainin to do
Yeah, if only. The sad thing is that nobody has any explaining to do at all.
DON'T TALK ABOUT SPLAININ
First I want any shithead in the press, including this rag, to explain how a .50 cal takes down a helicopter. It's a cute catchphrase, but the reality is hitting a moving target would be difficult, and much of an aircraft is empty volume. ANY round big enough to damage the rotor transmission, or ANY ROUND AT ALL in the turbine intake, will bring one down.
This is a bullshit scare phrase inserted into the narrative either by the administration or by a pants-shitting gun hater.
Reason should be a better source.
It's real basic: shoot the pilot. As an air traffic controller during the Vietnam war, I can assure you -- from first hand experience -- that it can be done. Admittedly, the craft must be low flying, but ? so what? Helicopters frequently are at low altitudes. Furthermore, hitting the fuel tank can also bring down an aircraft rather quickly, especially with a .50 caliber projectile. While there's no assurance of success, in the hands of an even modestly skilled marksman, the chances are good enough to be risky.
"Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) ran the serial numbers on eight of the weapons found in El Chapo's hideout, discovering that the .50 caliber rifle was one of 34 such rifles sent to Mexico under Fast and Furious."
I'm not sure what the solution to this is, but I think we should ban assault rifles anyway just to be safe.
@Ken: if you are being sarcastic the subtlety is lost on me; however, unless you say otherwise I will give you the benefit of doubt on that.
It's generally safe to start from the assumption that comments posted on Hit'n'Run are sarcastic in nature.
You're so smart, Citizen X. I learn a lot from you.
I admire your choices in women, Crusty!
I am so blessed to be able to interact with you on a regular basis, Crusty.
John is one of our most beloved commenters.
Warty's enormous muscles aren't weird-looking at all. Nobody thinks that.
I miss long abortion threads.
I think the "thread" is actually called an umbilical cord.
I really enjoyed the collegial give and take of the Palin/Trump thread.
I am soooooooooooo sorry I missed that.
And I did so assume; otherwise I would likely launch into a lecture on firearms, define "assault weapon, blah blah blah that is normally reserved for well intentioned progs [the worst kind].
Do Progs come in any other flavor than "Worst"?
Asking for a friend.

Fully-automatic assault rifles with drum magazines that fire .50 caliber armor penetrating bullets and have folding stocks and bayonet mounts are the most dangerous kind of gun and they litter our streets.
Litter our streets with what? The bodies of innocent children of helicopter parents!?
Free rangers.
With the bodies of the victims of senseless gun violence who have been murdered by the NRA and white male christians who everyone knows are the real terrorists.
Also, the bodies of the uninsured who are regularly left to die in the streets as well, right alongside the aforementioned gun victims. So many bodies.
The good news is that they give great traction to cars and trucks.
What kind of tires do you have? I find I have to keep the viscera-chains on my truck almost year 'round!
OMG! They're cheaper than books and easier to get!
Books? I thought they were cheaper than lettuce.
Seeing as how that is the case I want to know why I have lettuce and books but no 50 cal.
If only LeVar Burton ran the ATF.
Honestly, some of the most dangerous guns you'd think maybe gun grabbers should be worried about?
You never hear a peep out of them.
You can get a rifle in .338 Lapua that'll take out a milk carton from 1,700 yards or more--for a reasonable price.
Why do civilians need one of those?
I think we should be free to buy them, but I'm just sayin'.
If I were a gun grabber (which I sure as hell am not), I'd probably be more worried about one of those than a guy with an AR-15.
The crazies who actually go on shooting sprees aren't very accurate at short distances - what makes you think they can handle shots of 1000+ yards?
Out past 1,700 yards, I don't think it's just the crazies you have to worry about.
That's ring of Gyges territory.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ring_of_Gyges
Ken, you're insane!
Lapua's aren't reasonably priced!
If you want to shoot milk cartons at 1700 yds, a win mag 300 is much more reasonable.
You wrote "You can get a rifle in .338 Lapua that'll take out a milk carton from 1,700 yards or more--for a reasonable price". Only if you can handle that sort of rifle, a very long range. By the way,I spent a considerable amount of time shooting both a World War 2 Garand and Model 70 Winchester Target Rifles at 1000 yards.
One milk carton is two bucks. One lapua mag 338 is seven bucks. Missing three times is a taker of gasoline. I'll keep my milk carton hole free.
Dang. I wish those .50 BMG assault rilfes did litter our streets. They sound awesome, and I'd love to pick one up.
Wait, I thought they had detachable, belt-fed clips!
And that thing that goes up.
Fully-automatic assault rifles with drum magazines that fire .50 caliber armor penetrating bullets and have folding stocks, and bayonet mounts and especially the shoulder thing that goes up are the most dangerous kind of gun and they litter our streets.
FTFY
I was being sarcastic as hell.
And I for one appreciate that Ken.
I mean, what the hell would banning assault rifles do to stop the government from giving massive firepower directly to Mexican drug lords, anyway?
Easy. They would be so tied up enforcing the ban they wouldn't have time to do anything else stupid. OK, call me an optimist.
Ed, this article is a bit of a word salad.... just sayin'
how so?
I felt this paragraph was a non-sequitur:
I think it's a valid point to point out the parallels of drug prohibition to alcohol prohibition. The city of Chicago, is not one of those parallels.
I thought that was Ed's point, drawing attention to the nonsensical nature of Chicago naming Guzman as "Public Enemy Number One."
Disclaimer: Just ate lunch and brain no work so good.
I heard that gun was designed to shoot down helicopters!!!
"It shoots through schools."
Even schools stocked with those bulletproof blankets??
"It goes through armor. And through the victim, through the wall, through a tree outside..."
My mother shot through a school once. Once.
Okay, that's what that's from.
Johnny Dangerously?
To be fair, El Guapolito or whoever supposedly had people on hills told to "shoot down helicopters" with them.
But that just tells me he bought the hype that VPC etc. were pushing on The Scary .50 Cal.
In the real world, you want a dedicated AA gun, a MANPAD, or at least a machine gun to take down a helicopter.
(At shorter ranges a more rapidly fireable and elevatable .308 is probably more likely to hit the pilot, avionics, or engine.
At long rangers, well, unless you're Very Well Trained, you might as well not bother.
"It can shot down aircraft!!!" was always hysteria.)
Don't worry guys. It's actually Bush's fault. He started a similar program that failed and was therefore cancelled. Obama only restarted and double downed on the program knowing it failed the first time, so it's totally Bush's fault for starting it.
Perfect! Let's go with that!
/Holder
Yesterday a federal judge ruled the Obama administration could not assert executive privilege when refusing to hand over documents related to Fast and Furious to a congressional committee investigation the operation, and ordered the administration to release documents requested by Congress, which in 2014 held then-Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt over that refusal.
Does anybody think they'll hand the documents over this time either? Pfah, the documents have probably already been shredded.
Paper copies shredded, digital copies were on hard drives that were also destroyed. In fact, they were on the same hard drives those IRS documents were on, and on Hilary's email server which was wiped with a cloth.
Paper copies redacted to the point of their being useless.
I want one.
Don't let it loose, it can take down helicopters.
Eh. .50BMG rifles are fun, but they're also kind of a pain in the ass. They're heavy and awkward, and you need a huge amount of space to shoot it.
Not to mention, what does a box of ammo cost?
It goes from 2-6 bucks a shell for basic AP, more for tracers and shit.
"Smells like VICTORY!"
Last retail purchase in October was $45/box (10 rnds) plus tax. The only way I know of to get $2/rnd live ap is to buy bulk surplus (in 10,000 rnd + increments).
Have they tried looking in the mirror?
Most rifles can take down an unarmored helicopter.
I'm glad this meme caught on, though.
Indeed. My army common tasks manual had aiming instructions for firing at aircraft with the (gasp!)M16.
Pretty sure the M82 was primarily designed for use as an anti-materiel rifle anyway. Not sure why the fact that it does its job effectively makes the fact that our government basically gave one to a narco-terrorist any more outrageous.
Well, "legally" under laws of war everyone else ignores entirely and we ignore in effect - by designating equipment carried as "material" - you can't shoot anything .50 and up at mere soldiers.
Because handwaving BS.
Realistically, it's for killing officers and snipers a long way away, and breaking engine blocks...
I'm sure if a person were standing next to a helicopter during take off a 45 would take it down.
All that toxic waste the EPA released into the river is perfectly safe, that Viaduct that had to be replaced NOW NOW NOW or it would come crashing down is perfectly stable while we go into years of construction delays.
El Chapo was also named Chicago's "public enemy number one," the first criminal to achieve that designation since Chicago gangster Al Capone was put on the list in the 1920s.
I didn't even know he lived in Chicago.
Oh, I don't need anything like that. Yet.
OT:

Where's ENB? She should be on this.
That's far too much for the sound technician. They're horrible.
Yeah, half the time they can't even keep the boom mike out of frame.
That's not the boom.
It's not the boom mike, it's Mike's boom?
It's a Warty protuberance.
I dunno, pornos tend to have better sound than many independent features and shorts. The recording is solid and you can hear everything.
Some of it is dubbed over. Pretty poorly.
Why do the writers even paid? Couldn't it all be ad-libbed?
Couldn't it? You mean it's not?
Couldn't it? You mean it's not?
They have sound?
Jesus...what sort of sea creature do you have to be to get paid 300 bucks for boy/girl?
Some people like sea creature porn, HM.
^^^
Something with tentacles? Oh, wait. I hear that gets top dollar in Japan.
So you'd have to do a scene every week just to make out with a meager existence? Being in pron must have been so much better in the Boogie Nights era.
Most people do multiple scenes a week. Some do multiple scenes in a day. So multiply that by 5 to 7.
And I believe performers often supplement with one-on-one engagements.
You seem to know a LOT about the inner workings of this industry.
Waffles, is this you?
You will never see me on a snowboard. Plus I trigger avalanches in-bounds.
Oooh, those are the sisters rocks and decidedly in-bounds. Probably just closed because ski patrol didn't get to bomb them yet. That guy is phenomenally stupid and lucky. Some ski instructor at Sugie just went missing too. One thing that was pounded into my mind as a young instructor at Taos was that you can fucking die in-bounds if you aren't extremely aware of your surroundings especially after a dump. I guess all these low-snow years in the past brought the tards out in force.
Why do female/female performers get 76 cents on the dollar for female/male performers?
Penis.
Porn has writers?
I think the more amazing thing is that they get paid.
+1 "I'm here to fix your plumbing."
DAMMIT BITCH, THE SCRIPT CLEARLY CALLS FOR YOU TO SAY "CUM ALL OVER MY FACE BABY", NOT "CUM ON MY FACE BABY". NOW WE HAVE TO REDO THE WHOLE THING.
If I ever see a porn star, I will ask, "How much improvising was there on set?"
Of course. How else would you know if he ever fixes the cable?
Do they make more than a Gawker or Vox think-piece artist?
Yes, and it's a more dignified existence.
*opera applause*
Yes, especially considering they get paid by the word.
Does "uhhh" count as a word?
There is money to be made if your willing to wear different hats.
Sweet, $400 per script? Three thousand for directing? I really oughta swallow my pride* and head out there. First I may need some work samples...
*well, shame, not pride
When you consider that you could probably direct at least a movie a day... shit, you're talking a Tyler Perry level of filmmaking volume.
"I really oughta swallow..."
Are we not doing phrasing anymore?
Hopefully it will be back with the new season.
Writers $250-$400
Writers? That's way to much to come with gems of dialogue like "Pound my pussy and cum all over my slutty face! Yeah, just like that, just like that! I hope my husband doesn't come home from work early!..."
What about voice-over for translation?
Close captioned for the hearing impaired?
So the real money is in directing.
Where's the Foley Artist?
Those "SPLOOSH SPLOOSH" noises don't just make themselves.
Giving any weapons to gangs is bad enough, but giving 50 caliber rifles to gangs is somehow even worse.
It shoots through helicopter schools!
What are helicopter parents? Chopped liver?
By the time a .50 gets done with them.... yes.
It is the third time a weapon from Fast & Furious was found at a major Mexican crime scene.
Will this franchise never end?
The longer it goes on the better it seems to get.
The unofficial point break sequels will never end, If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price.
The ATF "gunwalking" scandal Fast and Furious was an unmitigated disaster from any perspective; in addition to some of those firearms showing up in crime scenes in the US [including death of border patrol agent Brian Terry--at which point it became a public scandal, due to whistle blowing ATF agents making it so] it seems that about 150 Mexican citizens have died from some of these firearms, as only about a third of the 2000 guns allowed to be transported to Mexico have been recovered. And now we have this "helicopter destroyer" [presumably a bolt action .50 cal, hardly a piece of "anti-aircraft artillery"] in the possession of Chicago's "public enemy number one."
Even in today's ridiculous media, it's not everyday that you see so much hyperbole in one story.
As for the current administration handing over anything related to this boondoggle, I would not hold my breath.
I'm guessing it's a Barrett.
My assumption as well, or possibly Armalite or Bushmaster.
Look, Holder and Obama were doing us a favor by getting those scary nasty guns out of the country. So what if some dirty fureners got killed because of it, it's not like they're real people or anything. I mean unless they come to the USA and vote for Democrats, then they can be real people.
It doesn't matter how those guns got there Hyperion. People are dying in Mexico because of our gun laws.

Hey John, btw, did the Chiefs win the Super Bowl yet?
Closer than the Raiders. Are they even a team anymore? Didn't they get contracted when the league voted to only allow the Rams and Chargers to go to LA? Or are they in London now?
Did I say that the Raiders are going to beat the Patriots in a playoff game? No, I didn't.
Since they got contracted and are no longer in the league, that would have been a pretty crazy prediction. So I can see why you didn't say that. And it is not like they ever made the playoffs when they were a team.
The Raiders have 3 Superbowl titles. The Chiefs are the biggest fuckups in the league when it comes to playoffs. They haven't won a playoff game since 1965!
Anyone who knows football knew what was going to happen against the Patriots in a playoff game.
And the Raiders are still in Oakland and still a team. Stop making up shit, lol.
Three Super Bowl Titles and a record setting run of 11 loss season. Its a shame what happened really. Maybe they could have made a go of it in LA. But the league had to do something.
😉
Just as an honest accounting of how the DOJ came to approve Operation Fast & Furious and why anyone thought it was a good idea to run guns to Mexico would require government officials acknowledging that their mania over gun control led them to a tactic that involved increasing the supply of guns across the border in order to catch far-flung bad guys rather than prevent the export of those guns in the first place.
That is not what happened. Getting the far flung bad guys, who were all in Mexico, would have required informing the Mexican government of the operation and then having the Mexican government arrest said bad guys. They never informed the Mexican government or made any effort to track the guns or have their owners in Mexico prosecuted once the guns went across the border.
What happened here was they allowed guns to go to Mexico knowing they would show up at Mexican crime scenes. They then planned to use the fact that those guns were in Mexico and used for crimes as an argument for gun control in the US. It was only when one of the guns were used to kill a USCBP agent and the ATF agents in Arizona leaked the operation to the media that they started pretending it was some law enforcement plan gone wrong rather than the calculated plan to arm Mexican gangs with American weapons it was.
^^^THIS!!!!!
Damn, I thought it was because of a video some guy made. Wait, that was another lie ... I mean FAKE SCANDAL the Rethuglicans made up to hurt the light bringers administration.
But are they stupid enough to put that in writing somewhere subject to FOIA.
They were likely not that stupid. They were just depending on the media being stupid enough to believe that they intended to get the bad guys in Mexico yet intentionally never told the Mexican government as part of the plan.
And thus those records have been wiped clean, "you mean like with a cloth?" clean.
That El Chapo didn't strut the streets of Chicago with a .50 cal stuffed into his pants as his concealed carry piece I view as a missed opportunity.
^and consequently why El Chutzpah never stuck.
Yawn. Fakes scandalz.
How to use a .50cal to take down a helicopter.
Wasn't it copyright infringement to name the operation Fast &Furious;? I mean, wasn't there some movie or something the name was appropriated from? That's the real scandal.
A police/sheriff's department in Florida (of course) took it upon itself to send large amounts of money to known drug kingpins in Central and South America as part of an "investigation" into drug trafficking... and now many in the department are being indicted for money laundering. Apparently, if they'd just gotten the green light from the DoJ, they would have been fine and dandy.
All the pants shitting over fast and furious is just dumb.
It is fetishizing the particular guns sold. If they didn't buy those guns, they would have bought others. It was a good plan.
Now I understand that around here people don't want the sales illegal in the first place. Fine. But that El Chapo ended up with one of the traced guns is still just a curiosity, and not something to get your panties in a twist over.
The point of reference to possession of this particular rifle, is that the ATF was up to it's eyebrows in it.
There's a huge difference between 'that guy was going to die anyway' and 'I pushed him down the stairs'. Fast and Furious is the latter.
as Phyllis replied I am in shock that any body able to make $4140 in a few weeks on the internet . try this website..........

Re this "remarkable finding" I'd be amazed if knowledgeable adults were actually "surprised" given the cash this Drug Kingpin had access to.That it turns out to be connected with the consummate bureaucratic/government screw-up that was and remains Operation Fast and Furious is even less surprising.
By the way, re the Obama administration, Gun Control and similar foibles, including Obama's push for additional gun laws, allow me to refer to historical fact,re a question I will pose. Long existing FEDERAL LAW precludes certain classes of persons from the possession of any type of firearms or ammunition. Conviction for violation of this statute carries, as I recall, a MANDATORY 5 year jail term. This EXISTING FEDERAL LAW, has lain generally unenforced though both Democratic and Republican administrations.. Re the Obama push for more gun control laws, why has existing law lain essentially unenforced? Also, re the crashing silence from the Anti Gun Set re the non-enforcement of existing federal law, how come the crashing silence from those who otherwise have so much to say. Obviously, I find the above described circumstanced curious, as might others.
Sounds a lot like entrapment. The government sells guns to criminals so they can turn around and bust them for using guns. I'm sure there's a logical explanation, or what seems like a logical explanation...somewhere over the rainbow!
If they actually busted them, there wouldn't be a scandal. Sounds more like the government sells guns to criminals and then lets them run rampant, so that the resulting violence will prompt people to grant it more money/authority. Like firefighters committing arson to remind people why they need a fire department.
Well, being a 45 pound gun and all, he probably wasn't planning on taking it with him to the next transaction.
Now I know I'm really late to this party but . . .
There are *multiple* rounds in .50 cal. Many, many rounds. To say a rifle fires .50 cal really says nothing. I've seen lever actions that fire .50 cal, there's the S&W 500 which fires .50 cal rounds. There's the Desert Eagle .50 Express (a semi-auto handgun) which fires .50 cal. There are *tons* of rounds in the 12-12.7 mm range.
.50 AE
.50 GI
.500 S&W Magnum
.500 Wyoming express
.500 Linebaugh
Well, here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/12_mm_caliber
Caliber on its own is not enough to tell you anything. I've got a tiny little pistol that fires a 7.62 mm round - the same caliber used in light machine guns and most US military sniper rifles. Except its about a quarter the length of a 7.62x51 NATO round.
Please Reason, don't go down the same road as the MSM and the guys who want to ban icky guns by doing the minimal work researching the topic - a good chunk of your audience has at least a minimal familiarity with firearms and these things stick out like a sore thumb.
The Barrett M-82 has been the bling-of-bling for Cartel leaders since its introduction.
They are on of the few classes of people who can actually afford the per-round fare.
The most reliable figures I've seen on Fast and Furious numbers put the quantity of guns illegally exported at close to three thousand, and that they lost track of every one of them. So far the ONLY ones they've learned the whereabouts of are those, like this one and the one found at the scene of Brian Terry's murder, that surfaced involving the investigation of some crime. So far two Federal law enforcement agents and several hundred Mexican nationals have been murdered wtih those guns. Federal law prohibits export of ALL firearms except under Dept of State and CBP licensure. NONE of F&F's guns were legally exported.
WHEN will the top idiots in BATF and DoJ be held to accuont for blatant violation of the law? Seems, per this article and a quote near the end, that the only ones involved in F&F to fact legal consequences for this travesty will be the patsies and bribed individuals who bought the weapons with OUR tax money and fed them into the export system. And one FFL dealer in New Mexico has already been falsely imprisoned and destroyed because they, after refusal for some time, finally agreed to make what they were sure was a "straw sale" at the insistance of FFL examiners, and were charged with selling to a felon.... when they had no indication that buyer might be a felon. The Feds' logic? Well, you SHOULD have known, so you're guilty. How about the FFL agents pressuring the gun store owners, and the straw buyer himself? Scot free.....
