Coaches Get Paid Millions. What About Players?
Alabama already has Clemson beat in one key stat: highest paid public employee
#1 ranked Clemson and #2 ranked Alabama play for the national championship Monday, but Alabama head coach Nick Saban already has one title to his name: at $7 million a year he's the highest paid public employee in the country. Clemson coach Dabo Swinny is doing fine as well, with a $3.3 million salary.
But don't even think about extending that same earning potential to the students who risk their bodies on the field. From Time Magazine:
While NCAA rules allow college athletes to trademark their names or slogans, they are prevented from collecting royalties until their playing days are over–precisely when those marks are likely to lose value. Swinney, meanwhile, trademarked his own name in 2009, after Clemson named him head coach and is also a vocal opponent of paying college athletes. "As far as playing players, professionalizing college athletics, that's where you lose me," Swinney has said. "I'll go do something else. Because there's enough entitlement in this world as it is." (emphasis added)

Sever "amateur" sports from education - where it has no business being - and this issue goes away.
Nonsense. Mens sana in corpore sano.
So ban all school sports teams? Interesting how you intend to do that...
To borrow one of those progresive arguments:in civilized countries, public universities do not pay their coaches millions of dollars, they do not have their students participate in for-profit show business events, and they do not allocate financial support based on athletic ability.
I see no coercion here and therefore can see no issue that requires any libertarian comment.
Personally, I think they should be paid, but obviously, they don't care enough to withhold their services.
It's not that easy to separate. The NCAA would wither without public universities' contributions, and college aged players are forced to play for the NCAA if they want to get in to the NFL (which is also heavily publicly funded).
Or... the NFL could run their own damn academies and pay for it themselves.
Agreed. But then ordinary college sports would not get the best talent. That pig is gonna squeal up a storm if you stick it.
Gee it would be a shame if colleges had to focus on providing education.
Of course I'm just throwing spitballs - sports are entrenched in schools in this country and nothing's gonna stop that. I just think it's really idiotic.
In what countries are sport not entrenched at the schools?
The one I know best is Germany. Sports are pursued through clubs there.
Um
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.....udent_life
The university offers a broad variety of athletics, such as teams in 16 different court sports from American football to volleyball, courses in 11 different martial arts, 26 courses in physical fitness and body building, 9 courses in health sports from aquapower to yoga, and groups in 12 different dance styles. Moreover, equestrian sports, sailing, rowing, skiing in the French alps, track and field, swimming, fencing, cycling, acrobatics, gymnastics, and much more. Most of the sports are free of charge. Heidelberg's competition teams are particularly successful in soccer, volleyball, equestrian sports, judo, karate, track and field, and basketball. The track and field team regularly achieves best placings at the German university championships. The University Sports Club men's basketball team, USC Heidelberg, is the championship record holder, won 13 national championships, and is the only university team playing at a professional level in the second division of Germany's national league.
Huh. That was not my understanding when I lived there in the 80s. Count me schooled.
Well, isn't that great.
I might also point out that - unless things have again changed - that a joint like that (like most unis in Germany) only admits the cream of the crop academic-wise.
This. ^
Unfortunately, anywhere there is substantial money you are going to have pols putting their sticky fingers in it. It is what they do.
Or they could sponsor one of us, like the MLS does.
"...college aged players are forced to play for the NCAA if they want to get in to the NFL..."
No, they are not. And stinks of TULPA
"...(which is also heavily publicly funded)"
Irrelevant.
Never heard of the NFL's three year rule?
Fuck off, tulpa.
And just to jam it up your sorry ass:
"There are many players in the NFL who did not go to college and still made it to the big dance. Many of them have become breakout stars and gone on to meaningful careers in football without those extra four years in the NCAA to get noticed."
http://www.mademan.com/mm/5-nf.....z3wsaOmvdV
I repeat, fuck off, you tired piece of crap.
Lol. On that list of 5 (!) players, two of them went to college and played a different sport, and one of them is a punter from Australia.
Yes, which means they did not need to play college ball. Did you have another point?
You found some random outliers which demonstrate how exceedingly rare it actually is.
Bubba Jones|1.10.16 @ 8:42PM|#
"You found some random outliers which demonstrate how exceedingly rare it actually is."
You claimed it was impossible, I spent 2 seconds on a web search.
Fuck off you pathetic piece of shit.
You really, REALY like football, don't you?
Those poor athletes, linving like rock stars, getting a free college education, along with tutors, special study facilities and professors willing to let you cheat, drowning in 19 year old pussy. Oh, and driving SUVs with $5k stereos. They are compensated just fine in my book.
Athletic companies also furnish them with a free wardrobe, shoes and backpack each year in the school colors, and boosters are rumored to hand the stars envelopes of cash.
If a player is caught accepting contributions from boosters, the penalties are severe, possibly career-ending. When being paid for your honest work is something that has to be kept hush hush, there's a problem with the system.
And just like impeachment, the only remedy available is so severe that it is reserved for the really big stuff, like blowjobs, while minor stuff, like lying to start wars, has no effective punishment.
I thought libertarians believed the correct amount of compensation for work is whatever the free market is willing to pay, not what somebody uninvolved in the situation thinks is fair.
I think the point of contention is that it is not a free market. It is floated with tax money and inflated tuition.
Sorry, none of that constitutes coercion of the negotiating parties, so it's irrelevant, unless you want to claim the taxpayer is being cheated.
Using tax money means at least one party, not party to the negotiations, is being coerced.
*Disclaimer - I know very little about all this and that comment is based on my impressions left over from decades ago when my university hiked tuition, got more tax money, and raised ticket prices so they could build a new stadium. My department had no athletes in it (Science) and we were a bit pissed.
Suthenboy|1.10.16 @ 3:09PM|#
"Using tax money means at least one party, not party to the negotiations, is being coerced."
The taxpayer is coerced which affects the negotiation between the trading partners not at all.
Wait, are you saying that negotiations are not affected when the parties are negotiating with other people's money?
Suthenboy|1.10.16 @ 4:10PM|#
"Wait, are you saying that negotiations are not affected when the parties are negotiating with other people's money?"
I'm saying the other people's money is irrelevant to that negotiation. Remove it, and the negotiations wouldn't change one bit. Neither side is using it to any advantage in those negotiations.
I'm saying the other people's money is irrelevant to that negotiation. Remove it, and the negotiations wouldn't change one bit. Neither side is using it to any advantage in those negotiations.
Bullshit. The NCAA and NFL can dictate terms because they have monopolies made possible by taxpayer funding.
Fuck off, tulpa. You're a dishonest piece of shit not worth engaging.
Wait - are you telling me that those athlete-scholars are NOT scientists?
John Urschel.
Jay Fiedler was an engineering major.
Arthur Fiedler conducted the Boston Pops.
One side has a veritable monopoly made possible by coercively-obtained funding. It's not much of a negotiation when one side has to agree to draconian terms or not work.
Nobby|1.10.16 @ 4:12PM|#
"One side has a veritable monopoly made possible by coercively-obtained funding."
A monopoly on what?
Fuck off, tulpa.
I think Sevo is Tulpa. Trying to throw us off the trail.
Wouldn't title IX be an issue with paying athletes? A few men's football and basketball players would make huge amounts and no equal resources would be put in women's payments.
Another reason to get it out of schools.
Agreed, I see liberals talk about the ncaa compensation issue a lot and would love to see the confused look on their faces if it turns out their baby, title IX, prevents it.
All fine and good, except Saban isn't a public employee. He's paid by the University's Athletic Association, which derives its revenues from ticket sales, the school's share of the SEC's television package, seat licenses, and the like. Some podunk JUCO might pay its coach out of the same taxpayer-funded pool that funds whoever's teaching Western Lit 102, but that's not the case in the big leagues.
And, I presume, donations from boosters.
Not to mention part of the compensation package of any big time coach is a radio show that pays them pretty well, deals with apparel companies and plenty of endorsement deals.
Anybody complaining about this hates the free market.
The texas tribune lists Charlie strong as a state employee earning $5M.
False.
Cash is fungible.
concern trolling by people who hate football.
This isn't actual football, it's Little League.
Actual football is much more corrupt than the NCAA.
Sepp Blatter can burn in hell.
I have a relative who is a Division 1 sports coach who makes close to two million dollars per year. It is a really good racket to get into, if you can.
Bonus if it's women's volleyball.
My uncle is in that racket. It's good for pulchritude but bad for income.
That's where this sentence needs to end.
So what the heck was that all about anyways.

You like that!
That Walsh for Burfict trade looks pretty likely to happen now.
^ Tulpa sighting.
Will anybody beat Adrian Peterson with a switch for fumbling the ball?
Sadly, we baby Peterson so much here in Minnesoda that everyone will blame Walsh for the entire loss and forget that AP gave them the go ahead score by once again dropping the ball in a critical situation.
Seahawks get Carolina. Green Bay is a higher seed, Washington is a division winner - doesn't matter who wins, they get the Cards. And what are the odds Seattle can beat Arizona at home twice in 3 weeks anyway? I like their chances against Carolina better. (They just barely and improbably lost to Carolina in the regular season so it's not like Carolina is that scary.)
The She-Hawks needed a pretty unlikely sequence of events to escape the Vikings with a win; they're going to have their hands full with the Panthers.
I'll admit Seattle didn't deserve to win - but neither did Minnesota. So I'll settle for having that Minnesota holder who apparently doesn't know which side of the ball has the laces on it being the one to decide who wins the game. On to Carolina!
Allrighty then!
Tulpa, why do you keep changing handles? Do you think your stink doesn't precede you?
Nice try, Tulpa.
Shitbag, go ahead and try. Your stench is such that no one is ever going to confuse your pathetic attempts at misdirection with my posts.
It's been tried before; your best friend Mary gave it a shot. You're more than welcome to prove your imbecility one more time.
On to lose at Carolina!
I don't know. I'm not sold on Carolina. They're beatable and Seattle is a load when they're not playing in sub-freezing temperatures. It'll be a good game, but I think Seattle pulls it out. Of course I don't get a check regardless of who wins.
Russell Wilson is the most overrated QB in football. He sure as hell isn't going to age well. Right now his game plan is based entirely on scrambling and taking advantage of the NFL's sentencing the intentional grounding rule to death by a thousand cuts.
Tulpa is a lying piece of shit desperate for attention. Fuck off.

If the players don't like their wages, they are free not to go there. Whining about coaches' salaries in relation to players is no different than whining about CEO salaries. Reason really can't walk away from the stupid on this issue.
The NFL won't let players be draft-eligible until three years after high school. Where are the players supposed to go for three years? The CFL?
Sucks to be them. Since when does the NFL owe them a job? The NFL doesn't like to hire people until they are 21 years old. That is their right. If the players don't like it that they have to play college ball before going to pro, they are free to not play football and do something else. Indeed, many players who get drafted by MLB do just that.
The NFL is a monopoly propped up by coercively obtained money. The NCAA is a cartel largely funded by coercively obtained money.
But yeah, libertarians should just let them do as they please.
Indeed, many players who get drafted by MLB do just that.
Baseball players can start playing professional baseball, which they get paid wages for, at 18 years old. No comparison.
Nobby|1.10.16 @ 4:36PM|#
'I'm TULPA! I'm here to get attention! See how clever I am? I just made up a new name so maybe no one could smell me!'
Fuck off.
The NFL has no monopoly on either sports or entertainment. IF the players don't like the deal the NFL offers, they can work elsewhere. If you don't like their product, don't buy it.
Lots of industries get government money. That isn't a good thing but the fact that they do doesn't mean their employees are entitled to a job or any certain wage.
Ted S.|1.10.16 @ 4:29PM|#
"The NFL won't let players be draft-eligible until three years after high school"
So? Is someone guaranteed consideration for a certain job? What about those kids who are 4'-8"?
And besides:
"There are many players in the NFL who did not go to college and still made it to the big dance. Many of them have become breakout stars and gone on to meaningful careers in football without those extra four years in the NCAA to get noticed."
http://www.mademan.com/mm/5-nf.....z3wsaOmvdV
What about those kids who are 4'-8"?
They wouldn't be useful to the football team, probably.
That's like saying that because skyscraper construction companies don't hire people who are afraid of heights, it's OK to not hire black people too.
Well, I had a grad school free ride in chemistry. What about those kids with IQs of 75?
Agreed! It's UNFAIR, right tulpa? I mean they deserve to something, something!
"What about those kids with IQs of 75?"
Yeah Tulpa. Do you think you deserve special treatment ?
If the players don't like their wages, they are free not to go there.
Except there's no place they can go to get a wage, thanks to the publicly-funded NCAA locking down all potential employers for college-aged athletes.
Except there's no place they can go to get a wage,
They can't get jobs doing something else? The NCAA is free to form a cartel. Anti-trust law is totally counter libertarian. You people sound like Progressives on this issue. You act like that the players have some kind of a right to a job playing football. They have no such thing. The NCAA is free to offer whatever deal they want and the players are free to take it or leave it.
John, that's tulpa. Do you think you'll get anything other than pathetic sophistry?
Sadly, some of the reason writers are just as stupid on this issue.
I don't disagree, but tulpa's act is tired beyond pity.
What sort of pathetic person keeps changing handles only to show up and get busted again in 5 minutes? I mean, you'd hope he might have a dog that would give him some semblance of authenticity.
They can't get jobs doing something else?
Something they're not as good at?
How would you like it if the government dictated the wages for your occupation, and if you didn't like it you can go get a job you're not as skilled at?
The NCAA is free to form a cartel. Anti-trust law is totally counter libertarian.
The NCAA uses public funds to prop up its cartel. That is absolutely not libertarianly acceptable.
Nobby|1.10.16 @ 4:43PM|#
"Something they're not as good at?"
Oh, poor things...
You mean like you posting here? That sort of 'not good at'?
Nobby|1.10.16 @ 4:33PM|#
"Except there's no place they can go to get a wage,"
Were you born dishonest? Or did you study long years to become such a worthless piece of crap?
Fuck off, tulpa.
If the players don't like their wages, they are free not to go there.
If you don't like your wages you're also free to go to the boss and ask for a higher wage. It's a little harder to demand a higher wage by threatening to quit and go somewhere else when you're working for a government monopoly (is there any other kind?) that guarantees there is no somewhere else to go.
Nowhere else to go? They can only play football? Bullshit. You are acting like these people have some kind of right to play football. They system is what it is. If you don't like it, don't be a football player and do something else.
Clearly the players are getting a good deal because if they were not, they wouldn't take it. The fact that you think it should be a better deal means nothing. It is not your money. If you don't like the fact that the NCAA and NFL get government money, then work to stop them from getting it. But the fact that they do doesn't mean the players are entitled to be paid for playing football or entitled to any better of a deal than the NCAA is willing to offer and they are willing to accept.
Saying the players should be paid is no different than saying McDonalds' workers should make $20 an hour because the CEO makes millions. Pure Prog DERP
They think they are getting a good deal because a rich white guy tells them they are special.
"Saying the players should be paid is no different than saying McDonalds' workers should make $20 an hour because the CEO makes millions."
I'm not sure that's a good comparison.
Except the NCAA isn't the only collegiate athletic association in the US...
Well, looks like Sevo's got this one covered.
7 handles this weekend alone, Tulpa. Do you ever stop for self-reflection, or is that too painful?
Man, the stink was obvious from post #1.
What a pathetic excuse for a human being.....
7? Your false positive rate is pretty horrid.
Just think of all the new visitors to the blog you've accosted who will never come back, and may turn away with negative feelings about libertarianism, all because you were scared of somebody's opinions. What a cowardly hack you've become.

Does the government dictate your wages Tulpa ?
$7.50 an hour ?
That is the central goal of every sock.
Look, if the NBA and the NFL are going to save the cost of fully developed farm systems then the least they could do is compensate the states unis directly (fucks going through the whores at the NCAA).
Look, college is for EDUCATION.
If you just want to fuck around and party for 4 years- get a shitty job!
If you just need it for the credential to basically "buy" a middle class income/lifestyle but have no actual interest in learning more, expanding yourself, some amount of knowledge for the sake of knowledge... then I understand why you go to college under the current circumstances, but jesus we need to dismantle the system.
And if you want to play professional sports... the NFL and NBA really should start developing farm systems (especially the NFL. Jesus, play was AWFUL this year because of injuries. Maybe if we had a minor league where we could grab back ups who at least have been running the same playbook and shit it may not suck so bad) or there should be sports academies.
I just wish the academia would go back to being about pursuing knowledge and information for its own sake (which would mean backing off the left wing shit) and stop being a credential, sports, party mill. Like, the vast majority of the human population are just sort of down with not thinking or reading or exploring or learning new stuff, but it is insane that our system encourages those people to go to college.
If you don't like it that colleges have sports, then work to end sports. There is nothing to say they should. If they do, however, there are under no obligation to pay the players anything other than the minimum players are willing to accept to play there.
just wish the academia would go back to being about pursuing knowledge and information for its own sake
When was academia ever like that?
+1 Socrates
This whole debate strikes me as a "missing the trees for the forest" moment. There are good debates to have on government funding, cronyist laws, the nature of government schools and colleges, the current idea of school and college, the nature of amateurism and professionalism, etc. but instead we have libertarians acting as if school sports are some new phenomenon or acting as if they should be banned or that all football players are entitled to be on a professional team.
The observation is that universities are diverting money from government subisidized loans to college football coaches.
Making poor black kids work for free in exchange for empty promises is just icing on the cake.
White guys behind keyboards reply, "it's not my fault these black kids skipped their math classes to play high school football! They should know the odds are against them!"
"Making poor black kids work for free "
No one is making them work for free. No one is making them do anything.
The ones who do "work" don't do it for free. In addition to free room and board for 4 years they are paid an opportunity to get credentialed for higher paying work later if they just put a portion of the effort forward that the non players have to in order to gain the same credentials.
The ones who are good enough and choose to get paid very well.
Except when they schedule football practice during chemistry lab.
