Rich, White and Stupidly Anti-Vaccine in California
New Years Resolution: Stop putting your kids and other people at risk

George Mason University researcher Y.Tony Yang and his colleagues have published a new study in the American Journal of Public Health that looks at the demographic characteristics of anti-vaxxers in California. Until recently, California offered a very liberal personal belief exemption (PBE) policy that allowed parents to refuse vaccinations for their kids. Yang and his team report that between 2007 and 2013 that the portion of students with PBEs doubled from 2007 to 2013, from 1.54 percent to 3.06 percent. Who was seeking the exemptions? They report:
Across all models, higher median household income and higher percentage of White race in the population, but not educational attainment, significantly predicted higher percentages of students with PBEs in 2013. Higher income, White population, and private school type significantly predicted greater increases in exemptions from 2007 to 2013, whereas higher educational attainment was associated with smaller increases. … Personal belief exemptions are more common in areas with a higher percentage of White race and higher income.
As ArsTechnica reported:
Over that time period, more than 17,000 children attending more than 6,000 schools in California had opted out of normal vaccination schedules.
In more than 25 percent of schools in the state, the kindergartener immunization rate for measles has fallen below the 92-to-94 percent threshold that is recommended for maintaining herd immunity. That means that a quarter of California schools may not have enough vaccinated children to keep from having an outbreak, possibly endangering kids who are too young or medically unable to get vaccinated.
With a clearer look at the demographics, the authors suggest that public health experts trying to reverse the trend may need to place more emphasis on dispelling a notion among privileged whites that protective parenting can replace immunization.
In early 2015, an outbreak of measles in California eventually infected 131 residents. Most were unvaccinated and one in five had to be hospitalized.
In June, Calfornia passed law limiting BPEs. It will go into effect on January 1.
A systematic review of studies published in the journal Pediatrics in 2014 found that the health benefits of vaccines far outweigh their minimal risks. So get your kids vaccinated already!

Well Christie and Paul questioned whether the government should be able force children to get vaccines last year, so it's obviously their fault all these rich white liberals in California aren't vaccinating their kids.
col,
Yeah, this being Reason, a strong "keep yer durn gov out of my veins" voice will probably sound. But as a guy with a past long involvement with public health services in several states, I can tell you that we used to have a heavy handed way of stopping disease spread. It was spotty, none here and harsh there. But now its pretty much a feather light touch.
The movement has started to deny school admittance unless proof of vaccination is given, but the affluent of Cali sneer at the public school fools injecting thier kids with disease laced with mercury. Until we go back to teaching rational debate, and stop worshiping dogma, chants and talking points we're not going to be able to stop more outbreaks from these self generated vulnerable population groupings.
Sounds Darwinian to me: Too stupid to get your kids vaccinated? Your kids die? I guess that particular kind of stupid won't get passed on..
Unfortunately due to the nature of herd immunity and partial immunization, the stupidity of anti-vaccer A can endanger the children of non-stupid vaccinator B.
Very true. Vaccines are only effective for about 90% of the population. Most of the disneyland measles cases were vaccinated. The strain of measles happened to be from the Phillipines. A recent whooping cough outbreak happened in North Carolina and ALL 13 kids were proven to be vaccinated. No unvaccinated children caught whooping cough in this outbreak nor was an unvaccinated child proven to be the source.
Typical anti-vaccer "logic" :
1) Vaccines are only partially effective
2) And there's an infinitesimal rate of side effects
2) Therefore no one should get vaccinated
I ask you the same question as the other guy :
Your boss comes into the office, tells you that you're traveling to sub-Saharan Africa next week, for a six month stay. You :
A) hop on the flight without a care in the world
B) quit your job
C) get vaccinated
?
1: CDC logic is that they are partially effective.
2: The pamphlet in the box comes with the infinitesimal rate of side effects.
2: We should have the freedom to choose. Because there is a risk there must be choice.
B: I'd quit my job, but not necessarily over the vaccines. I just wouldn't go to Africa. I have friend from Pakistan who needed to get vaccinated at every border despite his vaccines being up to date. He quit that job too. He claimed to have symptoms similar to the man in the documentary "Trace Amounts."
I have never once disagreed that "we" "should" have freedom to choose.
Ok, lets remove Africa from the scenario.
You work as a nurse/primary caregiver in the infectious disease ward of a hospital. Do you get your vaccines or not?
I'm pretty sure you do, because as much as you'd like to deny it, you understand that the risk of primary effects from the diseases is much more significant than the risk from the secondary effects of vaccination. The only reason you are willing to gloss over the former risks is that you do not viscerally fear them.
You are free to not-fear them because... everyone where you live is vaccinated.
At this point no. I'd retire. My son had a vaccine reaction. I was obviously pro vaccine before that. We aren't anti-vaxxers, we are VAX Choicers.
Since telling my story to many healthcare professionals, many nurses openly tell me they refuse to vaccinate their own children. Doctors including pediatricians believe that vaccines caused harm in my son and agree I should not further vaccinate. However a doctor can only give a medical exemption based on what they can prove, not what they know. One of my child's neuro doctors have testified in court that vaccines have caused permanent neurological harm in specific children.
Since we are playing hypotheticals I'd like to know would you feel comfortable forcing your grandchildren by gunpoint or ostracization to get vaccinated against their will if you knew:
There is a 1 in 7 chance of neurological harm including autism, ADD, ADHD, OCD, some learning disability etc.
There was a 3% chance they'd develop tics
There is a chance they'd die from SIDS within 7 days after receiving a vaccine as an infant
It's possible they contract the disease they were vaccinated for
That some vaccines in the past are linked to rare forms of cancer
That your grandchild will lose a few IQ points
That Merk's whistleblowers confess that they cheated the efficacy of MMR by injecting antibodies from an animal and the test is not reproducible
There is only a 90% chance the vaccines will work
The CDC whistleblower confesses causal link to autism and that his co-authors destroyed evidence (one of which Coleen Boyle also denied the link of Agent Orange to cancer harming our vets).
And that the government nor the pharmaceutical industry who made your vaccine is in no way liable for any harm.
And one of your other grandchildren had a vaccine reaction leaving him with mild to moderate autism, OCD, and tics.
I continue to not have said anything about endorsing anything vaccination required at gunpoint. Whoever you are arguing against with that line of argumentation is not me.
Thank you for confirming my presumption that the only reason you would avoid vaccines is that you (believe you) have the choice of avoiding circumstances where you would be exposed to the primary risk of disease.
Regarding your hypothetical, I would have to use the same decision-making process you did. I wouldn't find 99/100 of the conspiracy theory stuff you refer to credible... just as you didn't before you were unlucky. The human mind wishes to regain control, and it must be comforting and empowering to think that you are preventing others from making the mistake you made. The problem is that I don't believe you made a mistake... I believe you were unlucky. They are different.
I'm sorry about what happened to your son. Unfortunately, behind every statistic is a human story, often of great tragedy. My best wishes to you and yours in the New Year.
Vax choicers want choice in their healthcare. Some want no vaccines, most just want to delay the schedule, some want to forego ones that are no longer a threat. Our pediatrician thought we could delay Polio since it's no longer a threat on a delayed schedule, but we should really focus on Dtap hib and rotavirus since those are more threatening for today's children.
We also want safer vaccines, something that the CDC screwed us out of ten years ago when they conspired to throw research in a large garbage can.
Which would you believe to be not credible?

Every little bit of that is horseshit.
Vax shill.
This being Ronald Bailey, he's perfectly alright with forcing your kids to be vaccinated at gunpoint.
So obviously kids, in general, should get vaccinated. And just for the sake of discussion, lets say we achieved a libertarian moment in education, and all schools were privately funded, and had to compete for students and parents and kids had true choice in how and where to educate their kids. Would that then alleviate the "requirement" to have kids vaccinated?
In other words, in a society where we have more of the libertarian ideals in practice, would this become a non-issue in terms of legal requirements?
'Should' implies a specific set of priors.
(l)ibertarianism is sorta intended to allow people with a wide variety of priors to sort of mudge along together - and it doesn't guarantee that the resultant hodge-podge will work better than when we're all in lock-step, just that it will have more freedom overall.
As individual liberty, not health, wealth, or happiness is what (l)ibertarian policy seeks to maximize - though we believe that, *overall*, those things will be maximized alongside freedom (as we believe that freedom is a prerequisite to the others).
So, no - likely the issue wold not be 'solved' through libertarianism except in a individual way. *I* get vaccinated and don't have to deal with the disease, *you* don't and take those risks. The poor bastards who, for whatever reason, can't get vaccinated - maybe they'll be able to get insurance to cover any harm done by inadvertent exposure to carriers (vaccinated or otherwise).
My son can't get vaccinated. He had a week long negative reaction to Dtap and the result is Autism, or brain damage from brain swelling which is identical to autism. He gets seizures from a cheap food additive/stabilizer found in vaccines called polysorbate 80 which pharma has since slyly removed from most vaccines. The thing is that he doesn't qualify for a medical exemption. There is one test to prove mitochondrial dysfunction which would grant an exemption but that test costs roughly 50,000.
in Libertopia parents who don't want vaccination would open a private school where vaccination wasn't required. Sooner or later the diseases would sweep through the school and kill a bunch of the kids.
People who refuse to learn from history would learn from current events.
Obligatory.
I'm wary of all the vaccines must be administrated at the maximum amount possible per visit thing they've got going on, because they don't trust parents to come in for multiple visits. I've had a vaccine swell my leg up so bad I couldn't get a pair of jeans on. The doctor didn't have a fucking clue which of the vaccines he gave me caused the reaction.
I'll take multiple visits with my eventual kids, and we can watch for the very likely heritable bad reaction to certain vaccines.
Was your leg swoled up for more than four hours? If so, call a doctor . . . .
We rushed back to the doctor and got a shot to make it go back down (I was very obviously having an allergic reaction that wasn't going to lead to good places), but he couldn't tell me which vaccine caused it.
You were lucky. My ex-partner will suffer a painful and life-long nervous disorder as a result of vaccine injections she had 15 years ago.
It's a daily heartbreak.
I would not wish it on my worst enemy.
Is Ron advocating the state force medical treatment at gunpoint again?
Is Ron getting paid to advocate forced medical treatment at gunpoint too? I like the bill of rights, don't fuck up the first, fourth, VAERS threw out the 7th, and the 9th.
I remember my father coming home from work early one day about 1959. We went and stood in line to suck on a sugar cube. Then my dad took us out to eat, to celebrate that we could play with our friends that summer without worrying about getting polio, like my older cousin did. And she was lucky, ending up wearing a leg brace the rest of her life instead of living it in an iron lung.
Today's parents don't remember those times.
Bingo! Forget the people who think vaccines cause autism (they're so deep in the conspiracy theory they'll never be convinced otherwise). There are members of the anti-vaxxer movement that do not actually believe these diseases -- which used to OR STILL DO kill hundreds of thousands of people a year -- are really a big deal. They say stupid things like "whooping cough is just a bad cold"... yeah, just a cold which lasts months and makes you unable to do anything else.
Whooping cough is just something that happens to Vashon Islanders.
People who know that autism and vaccines are linked have probably read the transcripts between senior CDC scientist Dr. William Thompson and Autism research Dr. Brian Hooker.
http://www.amazon.com/Vaccine-.....1634509951
They're probably just morons actually.
Vax shills resort to name calling when they have nothing credible left to say.
Whooping cough snapped one of my ribs. It sucked bigtime
That we're still having this discussion in (almost) 2016 is fucking ridiculous. Vaccinate your children, for God's sake.
Should we die or not die on this hill? Asking for a friend.
A world where the government can order you to stick a needle in your kids' arms is a world where freedom is just an arbitrarily defined blob of mob sentimentality. Yes, we must deny them the high ground.
The government should not have the power to force you to vaccinate your self or kids. But you should not have the power to endanger me and mine with your stupidity, either. If you or your kids aren't vaccinated, you shouldn't be able to attend public schools. And private companies like Disneyland should be able to ban you to keep the rest of their guests safe, as well.
If my kid doesn't go to your public school do I still have to pay taxes to fund said school who discriminates against children who exercise freedom of religion and philosophical will so you can pretend you live in a sterile world?
Of course you do. People who don't have kids have to pay those taxes too.
But since these people don't have kids their kids aren't forbidden either.
So you endorse discrimination like when blacks and whites couldn't share water fountains and bathrooms?

I understand the science of herd immunity and all that, but maybe... this is evolution doing god's work.

It bothers me that people assume vaccines are some magic potion that always do exactly what they are intended to do and never have any side effects. Whenever you inject a foreign substance into any living creature there is always a chance that something could go terribly wrong.
A friend of mine when I was a very young child had a bad reaction that left him mentally disabled and in a wheelchair. The drug companies paid his family in exchange for their silence. How many others are there?
I worked for many years in a large office and every year my co-workers who received the flu shot would get sick. I would point it out to them and they would respond saying that "picking the right flu strain is difficult" or "the flu would have been worse without it".
Herd immunity? The Navy requires vaccinations and have close to 100% vaccination rate on their ships, yet the CDC has documented outbreaks. How many go undocumented?
The logic that a government or society knows better how to care for me or my children than I do is false. One side is (at least partly) motivated and influenced by money and "group think". I am motivated by self preservation; risk and reward. I don't dismiss the science behind vaccines however as a free individual I expect to have the choice.
And people laughed when we warned about the side-effects of leaches.
Aren't they about 47% of the population these days? The side effects have got to be quite noticeable.
Yeah, I mean, you have your gut feeling that their sickness was the flu, and caused by the flu shot, and they have, uh... epidemiology.
http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/previe.....5103a1.htm
Vaccination is associated with reductions in influenza-related respiratory illness and physician visits among all age groups, hospitalization and death among persons at high risk, otitis media among children, and work absenteeism among adults (9--18). "
Transparent strawman, no one with any sense is claiming that. They're claiming that the facts are unambiguous and show that there is net benefit.
"net benefit" lovely, this "ends justifies the means" rational is as disturbing as students petitioning to repeal freedom of speech. There may be a place for you somewhere in the world but that place is certainly not in a free country where people are free to make individual choices for themselves and their family. People who worship modern medicine and wish to cram their belief down the throats of "non-believers" are no better than religious fanatics who kill in the name of their religion. Using the government and threat of force to take away my individual rights makes you a coward and a criminal in my book.
Ok, tough guy. I'm really impressed with your freedom peen, ok?
You're travelling to sub-Saharan Africa on business.
Do you take the vaccines or not?
I spend about half of each year in Equatorial Africa. And I can only do confidently because of all the immunizations I take. Not long ago, I had just come back from Africa and was attending a school function. The two dreadlocked white women next to me were talking about the evils of vaccines. I really wanted to ask them if they were glad that I had all my shots, since three days before I was in a hospital in Benin. The anti-vax people are always people who have had the luxury of living in a world where almost nobody dies of preventable disease, and everyone expects their children to live to adulthood. That is not the default human condition. They have never seen real suffering from disease, so they do not really believe it exists.
sub-Saharan Africa is not the U.S.
I dunno... a hell of a lot fewer than the 50 Million people who globally died of flu in a SINGLE YEAR?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918_flu_pandemic
Gawd, your "logic" is .
Amputation was a much safer way of dealing with infection.
Nothing cleans like fire
VAERS court make this no longer a problem for drug makers. While this video is titled "Do Vaccines Cause Autism?" it outlines a major problem with Vaers court. Americans may no longer sue drug makers over vaccine reactions. 6th amendment was trashed at the request of the pharma lobby.
Forgot to link the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S1-LgYyjQg
It's voiced over by a prominent actor.
How does 3 kids per school on average bring the immunization rate below a 92-94% threshold?
Nothing like being lied to with statistics to really get me invested in your pet problem.
If a kid foregoes one vaccine on the schedule he is considered unvaccinated.
Dude lets roll with it man.
http://www.GoneAnon.tk
Icky white people are responsible for the "resurgence" of measles and whooping cough...
You should watch this Hep vaccine public service announcement: https://youtu.be/DBDna3r7ymA
Without Hep B vaccines your kids are likely not allowed in school, besides we wouldn't want you 6 year old to spread hep B via unprotected sex, dirty tattoo parlors, and intravenous drug use would we? It is on the vaccine schedule after all.
Someone should tell everyone who contracted Hep B in the Philippines that they must have contracted it via "unprotected sex, dirty tattoo parlors and IV drug use."
http://www.wpro.who.int/hepati.....tories/en/
An estimated 7.3 million Filipinos, or 16.7% of the adult population, are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus ? a much higher rate than in other countries in the Western Pacific Region.
An estimated 7.3 million Filipinos, or 16.7% of the adult population, are chronically infected with the hepatitis B virus ? a much higher rate than in other countries in the Western Pacific Region.
I think they recently discovered the reason for the high rates HepB becoming chronic in some parts of the world is due to HepD, which, IIRC, acts with HepB.
Your linked story seems to have an hep epidemic of people in their 20s and 30s. Not infants. No reason to kick children out of school over forgoing the Hep vaccine.
The rate is even higher in China. Like 1/3
It could be 100% hep rate in China and it's still not a good argument for forced vax in America.
I think you are mixing HepB and HepC. I was vaccinated for B, and I currently "cured" my HepC. However, I developed cirrhosis from HepC, and I am currently on a transplant list.
HepB. In most adults it is like the flu on steroids. Your body will eventually clear it, but when I was vaccinated for it, roughly 200 healthcare workers per year died from it in the US. It is not easily spread.
The trouble with HepB is that if a newborn gets it, it is like to cause the same problems as HepC in adults. Except a baby can go through the progression in a matter of months with B and in adults it can take 30 years before any real damage is noticed.
HepC will cause cirrhosis and eventually liver cancer in almost everybody. The body can attack and kill the virus, but it can never clear it because it hides deep in the liver where it is difficult for anti-bodies to get. That's why it takes so long to notice symptoms. Your body is fighting a losing battle. Meanwhile, the virus is slowly destroying your liver. \
HepC is extremely contagious despite that it can only be spread from blood to blood. HepC can live for a relatively very long time without a host. If someone that has it gets a tattoo, not only can it be spread by using the same needle, but it can live in the ink. They didn't know that back in the 70s and 80s, which is part of the reason why it is at near epidemic proportions in my age group. And a very large percentage of those people are waiting for a liver transplant. And if you get a liver, there's a 1 in 3 chance the donated liver will be infected and you will have to go through another treatment for HepC. That is after full recovery from the transplant. And if there is a healthy liver, it most likely be sliced up and giver to more than one person, which adds to recovery time. And then you have a 1 in 10 chance to survivre for more than a year. There is no vaccine for HepC.
So yes HepB is bad in babies, and no, you don't spread it though tattoos, IV drugs or bloody anal sex with multiple partners. Well, you can, but it would have to be almost instantaneously blood to blood like there is in hospitals and institutions.
Personally, IDK what, if any stats there are on side effects on HepB vaccinations, but they would have to be very high to even consider not doing it for a pregnancy. I was vaccinated for HepB when I worked in an institution. The company provided the vaccinations for anyone who wanted them free of charge. It was a private, for profit institution. If you are not in a high risk category, you probably don't need it. If you are planning on having a baby and don't get it, you deserve to step on a rusty nail and get lockjaw so bad, the the muscle cramps break your legs. Yeah, fuck tetanus shots, too.
(Fucking character limits.)
10 years ago if the mother had Hep B they'd vaccinate the infant since there was an elevated risk. Fast forward to today where Ronald Bailey is advocating our children get vaccinated at gunpoint or through ostracization from public school over missing the hep vaccine.
There is now a drug, chemo-therapy for HepC (i forget what it's called). One of my old college friends contracted HepC through blood transfusions as a kid. At 68 he was waiting for a liver transplant and just recently started this new therapy. The HepC is GONE in three weeks! It's a nine week procedure, just to be sure it's whipped.
I was very happy when I read that a cure is available for some Hep strains. I hope the cost comes down so that it can be taken reasonably by all who need it. Right now the cure is about $100,000.
Only 15% of people fully clear the HepB virus, and it's the leading cause of liver cancer.
Oh yes. If your child has received every single vaccine on the schedule "except Hep B" they will be banned from school in California. But if your child actually has an active case of Hep B or AIDS, you are welcome to come to school and "ssshhhhhh" no one gets to know they have the disease. Teachers and coaches are taught to treat every child and every injury with blood as if they have AIDS so that no child is unfairly discriminated against. For those looking for logic, this one should really get your head spinning.
Kind of a STUPID ARTICLE you've written there isn't it, Ronald? Here's a thought for you: Maybe you should leave the Rich White Anti-Vaxxers to perish by their own devices instead of trying to shame them into joining the herd with the rest of the sheep. Instead of pointing your accusing finger at all those rich white elitists with all that private education which encourages actual cognitive thought, perhaps get them to watch more TV and maybe they'll eventually "shape up" and get in line with the rest of America. Admittedly, it's probably difficult to be responsible for filling white space with meaningful words when you rely on that... er... skill for your paycheck. However, your feeble attempt is less than Libertarian of you, in case you hadn't noticed.

Sorry for the double post. On another note, there's plenty of valid correlation between the number of early inoculations recommended/required and the exponential rise in diagnosed autism. And there's any number of valid reasons to keep your kids OUT of the public school system. Tangentially, we home schooled ours, nothing special (no TV), but they are very productive individuals who can at least THINK for themselves and have done extremely well in terms of societal norms and expectations, as if that were important. My son-in-law was entirely home schooled as well and is so damn bright he was given a full scholarship to Harvard for his Masters (in spite of having only a GED until college... GASP!!).
[citation needed] on your "valid correlation" claim...
... unless, I guess you mean, that the correlation is valid because it, like, exists?
The next sentence contains the ... germ ... of understanding. The rise in *diagnosed* autism. It's almost like autism became a popular catchall for developmental disorders which were formerly not called autism.
There is perfect correlation between the rise in autism and the increased vaccine schedule. Correlation does not equal causation.
One example of correlation: Children are more likely to drown when ice cream sales are significantly higher. That is correlation. In the summer more people buy ice cream and more kids swim in the summer than other seasons. Therefore the correlation between drowning and ice cream exists, but the cause was that more kids are in the water.
If you want a citation you can hear bill posey speak about the Vaccine whistleblower on C Span. The government has known about the link for about over a decade.

What Voice of Reason said. Don't be lazy.
By the way, my son-in-law was the only one not vaccinated in his community as a child and received the wrath of other families. However, he never got sick and the rest of his peers - who were vaccinated - DID!! Yessireee, line up straight, stay in your seat, raise your hand, mind your manners, get your shots, pay your taxes, follow the governmental herd, people... that's the ticket!!
That is what I hear in families who vaccinated one kid but not the other. The vaccinated cold catches all the colds and the unvaccinated skips them.
Cool story bro.
"Think of it as evolution in action."
You meant devolution, right?
"In more than 25 percent of schools in the state, the kindergartener immunization rate for measles has fallen below the 92-to-94 percent threshold that is recommended for maintaining herd immunity. That means that a quarter of California schools may not have enough vaccinated children to keep from having an outbreak, possibly endangering kids who are too young or medically unable to get vaccinated."
This is meaningless. My son has had only one dose of MMR and then we had his titers checked. He's immune (yes, contributing to the herd) so we never had the 2nd dose. We still had to provide a PBE.
There's no way of knowing if herd immunity is threatened based on this information. Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not buying it.
Not all people who are against mandatory vaccinations are anti-vaccination. This guy Ronald Bailey is an extremist. He's the Donald Trump of medicine and by no means a libertarian.
Im making over $9k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is what I do,
