"I know the truth of North Korea" – Yeonmi Park
Her first steps outside of North Korea were the beginning of a years-long journey that took her through China's vast Gobi desert, all the way to the Mongolian border, before finally reaching South Korea by plane.
Originally published on Nov. 13, 2015
"I didn't know what freedom was," says Yeonmi Park, author of In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom. "I didn't even know the word. I didn't know the concept. I never heard of that word, 'freedom'. To me, the happiest thing was having food."
Yeonmi's story begins with her first steps out of North Korea on March 31, 2007. She crossed the frozen Yalu River with her mother in the dead of night, arriving in China with only a vague idea what to do next. She was only thirteen years old. It was the beginning of a harrowing, years-long journey that would take her across China, through the vast Gobi desert, all the way to the Mongolian border, before finally reaching South Korea by plane.
It took exceptional strength of character for Yeonmi to survive the journey. Living outside of the law, she was subjected to constant abuse; starvation and suicide were rarely far away. Her father crossed the border to join her, but he died of untreated cancer a few months later.
"My father died without knowing even this kind of democracy exists in the world," she told Reason TV. "He didn't even know this much food was available in the world. And if I could've had the things that Americans throw away, I never would've escaped North Korea. That's how much we were desperate."
Yeonmi Park's survival story has captivated thousands of readers and propelled her into the spotlight around the world. But how much of it is true?
Pyongyang has produced a lengthy video that attempts to discredit key parts of story. In melodramatic fashion, "Park Yeon Mi, The Puppet of the Human Rights Plot" vilifies Yeonmi and her mother, accusing them of being agents of the United States. Doubters have emerged from outside North Korea, as well, calling her a "celebrity defector". Critics say they've found discrepancies in her life story and inaccuracies in her depiction of her native country.
For her part, Yeonmi insists on the truth of her story. Some details, she says, were changed to protect family members still living in North Korea. Other events, such as the sexual abuse she endured during her defection, have been shrouded in shame. "I had a reason to hide my secret," she told Reason TV. "I didn't want to admit I was raped when I was thirteen years old." She has attributed other misstatements to her poor command of the English language.
As compelling as her story is, the stakes couldn't be higher for the community of tens of thousands of North Korean refugees worldwide. Any exaggeration of the facts threatens to undermine their own narratives of widespread human rights abuses and political persecution. Their cause depends on the credibility of stories that are locked inside the world's most secretive nation, making them difficult, and sometimes impossible, to verify.
"I know the truth of North Korea," Yeonmi said. "The oppression and their tragedy. It cannot be silenced."

Communist paradise.
It's an autocratic hellhole because they're not practicing true communism. Paradise is in Cuba.
At least they don't have to deal with [redacted].
DON'T TALK ABOUT [redacted]!
Lucy has been redacted? 🙁
Lucy = Islam?
Cuber ? Cuber is the number one communist paradise ?
What is Venezula.... chopped livah ?
If only Obama was doing as much as Kim Jong-un to combat climate change. I guess maybe he would if only the American people had the foresite to declare him dictator for life.

I wish I could see some of those Mizzou fucks to North Korea. They would have to worry about having to deal with scary enlightenment ideas like freedom of speech three. Plus, they are suck fucking pussies, I'm sure thier lifespan would be measured in hours.
6 months there would teach them more than a lifetime of their liberal arts classes
6 months days there would teach them more than a lifetime of their liberal arts classes
Nah....fucking hours. These wimps would be on their knees after they missed their first meal.
Brace yourself, my dear
"Dear"? *triggered*
Feds steal more from Americans than criminals. Not even including taxes.

A lot of burglaries probably go unreported because people know the cops don't give a fuck.
and they don't want the cops to come shoot their dogs
If a police report were not helpful in an insurance claim, I would not bother calling the cops for a burglary.
When my family got robbed as a kid, the cops not only did not do a thing, they questioned my father about some Cuban cigars the burglars didn't take.
(Like how the hell would that even be their jurisdiction?)
Since there is no prohibition on possession of Cuban cigars, they appear to have been fishing for an excuse.
Beautiful person
I'm not sure if you're referring to her outside appearance, but imo Koreans are the hottest Asians.
Well I agree Koreans are banging. But referring to her life, ethic, and mentality.
I have great respect for those who have overcome such adversity.
^sorry for that Miss South Carolina-quality post.
WRONG! Japanese women are! 😛
Wrong! Chinese women are! Just ask my wife.
I also have strong opinions about which Asian country has the hottest women.
Not sure what Carson is thinking. Usually doesn't pay to go into hostile derpland.
http://hotair.com/archives/201.....tes-forum/
I think it could help. He will look like he made a solid effort to connect with them and they'll look rude and petty if/when they show their hostility.
And it would give me a schadenfreude boner if he told them to grow the fuck up.
"Grow up"? *triggered*
Carson is the King of derpland, so he's quite welcome.
Except on Saturdays, when he is not allowed to leave the house.
ISIS propaganda middle school assignment. I don't know this was a bad assignnent but could've avoided the controversy using something more historical. If you wanted something current really wouldn't have to leave the US media.

And the parent is mad at the school/teacher. We are fucking doomed!
She has some little local control over the teacher. She has no control over the Feds. Sux. But given the resources probably available a rational decision.
And taking such a position is EXACTLY why we are where we are.
Some time ago, the ideal of following the law shifted to the goal of not getting caught. That's what happens when there are so many laws and entrapment opportunities. See also "three felonies a day."
My question: when did this happen? Can you identify the Rubicon? Did we cross it in the night when we weren't looking, or do you think it was deliberate?
1933 was the beginning of the end.
I'll buy that.
I also wonder if income taxes represented that point.
A little perspective on the "threat" from terrorists...
According to the FBI the murder rate in the US is around 4.5/100K. That's about a one in 22,000 chance that you'll be murdered in a given year.
The odds of being killed in a terrorist attack are about one in 20,000,000/year.
The odds of being murdered in the US are THREE ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE greater than being killed by a terrorist, yet we afford murderers due process of law. No calls for government to preemptively bomb potential murderers based upon sketchy intelligence. Many murderers live in cities or are black, and I don't hear the yokels calling for a declaration of war on urban areas or on blacks, as they are with Muslims.
The idea that terrorism is a significant "threat" to society (or any individual) is laughable.
Not to say terrorists shouldn't be punished for their actions, but calling for a war on Islam because of the potential "threat" is an abomination.
As a reference, here is a chart showing the risks of dying from particular causes every year.
You are a retard.
What a fascinating counter, and such a smooth delivery. You must get laid a lot.
You're sarcasm is not okay.
*Your...damn....
Your grammar marginalizes me! Word privilege!
Whites don't care about black on black murder. I moved out of the 'hood so I wouldn't have to care.
BTW if you limit the danger to white on white killing you are down to two orders of magnitude.
What can I do about it? Work (such as it is) for more armed citizens. Detroit chief of police says "arm yourself".
And I would council that for any Muslims who want to try something. No soft targets.
In a way the Muslism jihadis are making a better argument for the America I'd like to live in than I ever can.
Arm yourself. Always.
Woman Kills Intruder
Black Man (NRA Instructor) says Arm Yourself.
So what you are saying is that You're probably much more likely to die from some American douchebag in the Army than from some Islamic douchebag in ISIS?
All Americans armed. No soft targets.
Gun free zones are for suicide by criminals.
Gun free zones are for targets.
The correct term is "Unarmed Victim Zone"
Not in a Cosmotarian America.
Damn threadedness. That was a response to d3x/dt3 The correct term is "Unarmed Victim Zone"
Interesting. But they don't include auto accidents.
One in 9700.
Bomb carz! They are a "threat".
Thanks.
So, we should run background checks on all auto dealerships and/or ban the private ownership of cars. In addition, no foreign cars should be imported into the US.
Cars are inanimate objects. Black is a physical description. Islam is an ideology. All of your analogies are plainly idiotic and merely show you're incapable of making analogies.
Your logic would say communists are no threat, Nazi's are no threat, even serial killers are no threat because they don't kill enough Americans. Since very few Nebraskans are killed by sharks they can swim with sharks worry free.
"very few Nebraskans are killed by sharks they can swim with sharks worry free."
That's cause they taste like corn which everyone knows sharks don't like.
Dear Not Okay,
The point being made was that maybe we shouldn't sacrifice our civil liberties over a threat that is being deliberately inflated to make us scared.
To continue your pointless, straw-man analogy, the Nazis and Soviets were much more of a threat to their own people, so maybe the lesson is not to give your government the ability to spy on, torture, or kill you.
Or are there too many syllables in those words for you?
He was not talking about the government spying or tourturing or killing Americans. Francisco wants taxpayers to import Syrian refugees.
Plus only one in ten trillion Americans get tortured by the FBI so you don't have to worry about it.
FdA didn't say anything about that in his post. He was talking about the risk of terrorism.
What is wrong with you?
Reading comprehension is not your forte is it?
I said:
I even italicized it, so idiots wouldn't make the assertion you just did. And, as a typical yokel, you completely missed the point, as usual.
I never said they are NO threat. I said the threat is SO insignificant that it isn't worth fighting a war over, let alone the type of war the yokels here are calling for. Meaning a war on Islam, where you kill people who've committed no offense other than belonging to the same religion as some terrorists.
I supported my claim with numbers rather than yokel emotion (I swear to Christ, yokels are worse than progs when it comes to basing action on their feelz).
I reiterate (for the slow). The point is there are significantly higher threats within our own country (1000 times more significant) that we deal with without feeling the need to kill innocents in order to eradicate it.
And for the record...communism...naziism WAS a SIGNIFICANT threat. Like exterminate half the world's population and/or invade/enslave your country kinda threat.
Not kill a few people at a concert threat.
Again...perspective. Get some.
"I supported my claim with numbers rather than yokel emotion (I swear to Christ, yokels are worse than progs when it comes to basing action on their feelz)."
1) Wow that's a lot of projection.
2) This surmises that the threat of terrorism boils down wholly to numbers. Now I'm not saying the numbers are without significance and value, but CW Cooke makes a good case that there's more to it.
http://www.nationalreview.com/.....-c-w-cooke
No, that case isn't worth shit:
"this enemy is not killing at random but is instead assiduously targeting anybody who dares to mock it and its beliefs. To conclude that we can draw meaningful lessons about the nature of the threat from the tables of Microsoft Excel is, in consequence, somewhat ridiculous."
Read more at: http://www.nationalreview.com/.....-c-w-cooke
Let's see.
'They kill people they don't like, therefore the number they kill doesn't matter!'
That's stupid enough to appeal to you, but not to those capable of rational thought.
The ONLY credible weapon terrorists have is fear. Stop being afraid of them and they are powerless.
If they attack you, kill those responsible and call it a day.
We've spent 14 years, 4500 Americans, $4T, 250,000 total lives trying to rid the world of terrorists and there are now more than there were before 9-11. Your pants shitting over an insignificant threat is what gives them power.
14 years mutherfucker. Can you name another American war that's lasted 14 fucking years with no inkling of resolution? For the luv of Zod, that's like 1/5 of an average lifespan. How long do you continue to stay the course before you realize it ain't working? You can't fight terrorism with conventional warfare...that's precisely the reason terrorism exists...because it can bend the political will of a powerful, well armed adversary to the will of a weak poorly armed adversary using irrational fear.
Man up, pussy, and use your brain instead of you feelz. Jesus, I thought Canadians were supposed to be tough?
"We've spent 14 years, 4500 Americans, $4T, 250,000 total lives trying to rid the world of terrorists and there are now more than there were before 9-11."
We can also thank toxic's favored policies for such wonderful additions to freedom as the TSA, the Patriot Act, government surveillance of its citizens, IRS reporting policies world-wide, and I'm sure much, much more!
But it's all worth it if it saves one white life and lets toxic use the US taxpayer to fund his vid-game fantasies.
"We can also thank toxic's favored policies for such wonderful additions to freedom as the TSA, the Patriot Act, government surveillance of its citizens, IRS reporting policies world-wide, and I'm sure much, much more!"
You are a lying sack of shit.

"You are a lying sack of shit"
Oh, look! Lying asshole makes claim absent evidence! Should we be surprised?
Why of course we shouldn't! This is the asshole known as toxic proving once again that toxic *IS* an ignorant asshole!
You claimed I held views that I didn't view, without evidence, and then pull the 'claim absent evidence' when called on it. Classic.
Terrorism only serves when the opposition is sufficiently reactionary. Against an unreactionary opposition, terrorism is powerless.
"Stop being afraid of them and they are powerless."
Is peak sophistry possible with you around? You know when Israelis were getting slaughtered during the second intifada I really wish you had been running around like an idiot telling people 'BE NOT AFRAID'. That would have lightened things up. Wouldn't have improved anything.
"Terrorism only serves when the opposition is sufficiently reactionary. Against an unreactionary opposition, terrorism is powerless."
Right. Lets all just 'pretend' it away.
Just as I thought: my superior reasoning capability only elicits soap-box specials. Another thread of idiots gets Cyto-pwnd.

"Is peak sophistry possible with you around?"
Aw, poor whiny 'victim'! Do you look under the bed for monsters before you go to bed? Does mommy comfort your sorry fucking ass so you feel safe?
Do you ever actually think before posting a response? See kids, this is why you don't let your senile grandparents on the internet. They annoy smarter people with random shitposting.
The chances of getting bit by a rattlesnake is also very low but that risk increases greatly if you invite some to live in your house even if they come with a group of nice snakes.
This is fair enough but one has to keep in mind that part of the reason that the numbers are low for death by terrorism is that the US (and others) have been, thankfully, been killing more terrists.
Also, numbers aren't everything: http://www.nationalreview.com/.....-c-w-cooke
Ah, the short Canadian warmonger finds another reason fer killin'.
What a surprise.
I love these whiny-ass butthurt comments. "Stop saying things I don't want to here!" Peacenazi tears are the most delicious kind.
I am not a warmonger. I believe in peace. People like Ron Paul believe in allowing others to war on Americans.
I believe in letting others war on Canadians. The French are also good targets. I'll even go for a twofer. French Canadians.
My solution for America? Use the Islamics to call for every American to get armed and trained.
An end to target zones.
Suicide bombers? I'll have to work on that.
Might have to go to war over suicide bombers. Or truck bombs. Or aircraft used as missiles.
Gun carry is great but it's not a panacea. You still have to have drones with bomb.
"I believe in letting others war on Canadians. The French are also good targets. I'll even go for a twofer. French Canadians."
Well that goes without saying.
You believe in getting America to bomb brown people for you. But make sure to keep the borders open while continually creating more enemies! Good plan.
I know you're still angry about the "You must be this tall to enter" sign at the border, but quit pretending you don't loves you some war.
Red Flag: whining instead of making a real point.
Match forfeited. Cytotoxic wins.
Yes, you win.
Come back when you get to high school.
"Maybe I'll get him by pretending to be edgy" /sad peacenazi
"Peacenazi"?
What are you, 14?
And you fail to account for number of terrorists created by dealing with the problem using the wrong policies.
The US invasion of Iraq, created ISIS. The origins of ISIS stem from Al Qaeda Mesopotamia, which was a nothing little splinter group. After the invasion, they became Al Qaeda Iraq (AQI), grew powerful and then morphed into Islamic State Iraq (ISI) which spread to Syria after the Syrian civil war started and renamed themselves Islamic State Iraq Syria (ISIS).
No Iraq war = No ISIS. The attacks in France were blowback for the ill-advised Iraq war and the nation building that followed.
Blowback. Pure and simple. Instead of a nice neat achievable goal to kill those responsible for 9-11, the genius military strategist (a part time fighter pilot in the ANG for five-ish years) decided to pursue the unachievable objective of ridding the world of terrorists.
Blowback is your fantasy. I have no obligation to indulge it.
ISIS only became strong in the chaos of Syria's civil war. Its members didn't pop out of the ground either-they came from all over, including from within Assad's prisons (he released them). If AQI didn't exist then these people would just join some other outfit and they'd be ISIS in all except name. In this alternate reality, the Kurds are much weaker and less able to take on ISIS/thing that is ISIS in all but name.
Thank God the US got rid of Sadaam who knows what shit he'd pull in the Syrian civil war. He was playing footsie with jihadists before he'd certainly work with them to get at Assad and Iran, both of which were his nemeses.
The one thing that can definitely be linked to US policy is all those tanks and other special armaments that were taken by ISIS from the Iraqi army. All 100% US taxpayer financed, because the USG couldn't just declare victory and go home after deposing Sadaam.
If only they'd listened to you! We'd have knocked over Saddam, and they would have lined the streets of Baghdad with flowers.
But hey, we can keep bombing some brown people for you, huh? I'm sure they'll eventually understand.
"If only they'd listened to you! We'd have knocked over Saddam, and they would have lined the streets of Baghdad with flowers."
I don't know about the flowers, but it would have saved a lot of money.
"But hey, we can keep bombing some brown people for you, huh? I'm sure they'll eventually understand."
Translation: "WAH stop microaggressing me with your logic and facts!"
What facts?
You think a war is going to go just like you want it to all the time? Or do you just not care because it just feels so good to bomb the brown people. If you go to war, you had better have an end-game, and I haven't seen an end-game for any recent military intervention.
Now it's time for you to say something about whining and projection and how you won the argument. Good job, junior. I'm sure your guidance counsellor will be proud.
Both Assad and Hussein were/are Baathists. They were not enemies.
Shhh, Cytotoxic is warmongering, don't interupt with "facts".
"Shhh, Cytotoxic is warmongering, don't interupt with "facts"."
Again, you can't actually point out any errors on my part hence the crying and whining and babbling about 'warmongering' instead of just admitting you're wrong. Apparently libertarians can be as babyish as conservatives.
"Both Assad and Hussein were/are Baathists. They were not enemies."
Yes they were. Syria was the only Arab nation to side with Iran in the Iranq war.
And the Baathists are off shoots of the Nazis - same philosophy with a ME flavor.
Horseshit!
Who do you think were were fighting in Iraq between 04 and 07? They were severely weakened during the Anbar Awakening only to resurface in 10 AFTER losing 80% of its leadership. You know why? Because you can never kill all the terrorists. Despite 6 years of trying.
They are back and stronger than ever.
No, Cytotoxic, you have no obligation to indulge the "fantasy" which is clubbing you over the head.
Forget it; he's rolling.
"Who do you think were were fighting in Iraq between 04 and 07? They were severely weakened during the Anbar Awakening only to resurface in 10 AFTER losing 80% of its leadership. You know why? Because you can never kill all the terrorists. Despite 6 years of trying." Assad started a civil war in Syria. -FTFY
Hate to break it to you, but "they resurfaced because you can't kill all terrorists" is pathetically weak. The ETA is still active because they weren't all killed that doesn't mean they have a break away state.
I love it when you assholes come at me with "facts" such as "Assad and Sadaam were allies because they were both Baathists".
"Shortly after coming to power Hussein claimed to have been informed of a plot against him, supported by the Syrians, and suspended, then later abandoned the plan for unification. In November 1979 both countries officially suspended relations with one another and withdrew their diplomatic missions. Prior to his forced retirement Bakr had expressed to Assad a desire to speed up the process of union, as he feared elements within the Iraqi Ba'ath Party were trying to kill the union plan. However the Iran-Iraq War and Assad's growing closeness with Iran effectively ended any hopes of rapprochement, and in January 1982 the borders between th two countries were closed and sealed and all trade and movement of citizens was stopped[4] [3]"

Feel free to educate yourself.
Considering our military misadventures all over the world, one would expect blowback to happen a lot more frequently than it does.
Instead it's never been demonstrated to have really happened at all.
You cannot *possibly* be this stupid.
Are you actually PBP?

Let's see, I think it's 'non-falsifiable' that defines toxic's fail here; your fails are hard to keep up with.
Listen, twit, it's your job to show, with very strong evidence, why you think there is one bit of advantage to what you propose.
You wish us (the US taxpayer) to fund another X years of 'war'? Goody, Mr. Wilson, tell us what *we* are going to get out of it, not how it will satisfy your vid-game fantasies.
I and others have already done that and you have ignored it.

Why do people feel the need to melodramatize or exaggerate the sufferings of people under totalitarian regimes. We know these regimes are terrible and that they treat their citizens horribly so why must we turn their suffering into yet another Prell commercial? I don't have any anaytical objection to pointing out people's suffering in North Korea just, in this case, a stylistic one where I wonder about who's water-carrying for whom.

I think I get your point. It certainly is useful to our gummint if they can always point and say, "look how bad that *other* place is!"
Then they can deflect attention from things like massive violations of the 1st/2nd/4th/9th/10th amendments. Though I have a funny feeling that you don't actually have any problem with anything the US gummint does.

HHS: Bailing out Obamacare insurers an 'obligation' of the federal government
http://www.washingtonexaminer......le/2576837
This was known about since day 1
"At issue is a provision within the law known as the risk corridors program.
Under the program, which runs from 2014 through 2016, the federal government is to collect money from health insurers doing better than expected and use those funds to provide a federal backstop to other insurers who incur larger than expected losses from rising medical claims. The idea was to provide training wheels to insurers in the first years of Obamacare's implementation, and to take away any incentive for insurers to cherry pick only the healthiest customers."
The program of covering their losses was supposed to be for the sake of 'transition'. Now that those sources of funding are closer to being phased out, the Obama admin is making noises about possible longer-term means to prop up insurers... but its just hot air. They can't change the law with a GOP congress, and it will be the job of the next admin in any case. They say as much in the closer of the piece, which is sort of weird conclusion because its admitting that there's nothing new here.
Now we can look forward to cries of "market failure."
Yeah -
the reality with the ACA...as far as I understand it (and i think Peter should do a piece explaining, if he hasn't already)... is that it is far more likely to be "fixed" than "repealed" in any future legislative action.
And the changes made will likely be things that Democrats themselves would have eventually gotten around to (pretending that they are "improvements" rather than "fixes"); or at least will sign-on to as well when the time comes.
Forcing plans to cover lots of expensive, low-incidence stuff will probably go (like mental health, substance abuse, etc), and there will hopefully allow a greater range of self-coverage options so that people have more flexibility in fine-tuning their plans while freeing up insurers from having to cover everyone 100% exactly the same way.
But the exchanges will probably remain... as will the limited price-controls and formulary restrictions.. basically, the 'superstructure' will remain while lots of parts are replaced.
the fact is that regardless of who wins the presidency or has congress... the system currently is in a process of slow implosion. The only reason changes aren't happening sooner is because Obama wants to pretend it was a success and let it fail on other people's watch.
They can't change the law with a GOP congress
Since when does it matter what the fuck the law actually says? Just take it to SCOTUS and those lapdogs will give the executive whatever it wants.

Did Trump actually come up with this, or did some media type say he did? Seems to be leaning toward the latter.
Trump said he was okay with it when the media type suggested it.
Citation needed. The clip I head, Trump kept saying "you tell me," but I am not sure I heard or recall the whole thing.
AA you got a clip of what you watched. Everything that I have heard is because he didn't denounce what the reporter brought up (muslim database) now he is an advocate for it.
Heard this clip on the radio, but not all of it. Looks like NBC borrowed some Reason staffers to write the headline and read quite a bit into his answers.

This is a horse shit smear.

in the first clip he's talking about refugee immigration from Syria. In the second clip he completely ignores the reporter. This is progressive tactics. That it gained traction on this site and hotair, etc. is fuking disgusting.
There's plenty to criticize Trump on without making shit up. You know its bullshit when they bring up Nazi Germany.
Lean towards the latter. Trump is like Hitler !!!!!!!!11111!!
Toxic, you got your ass handed to you! Where'd you go? You need more punishment yet!

Toxic, you got your ass handed to you. Now get back up there and post more bullshit. As an ignoramus, you need all the punishment you can get.

He can't post more now. It's way past his bedtime, and he'll be grounded if he gets caught using the computer again.
More proof that communism is just one whopping rationalization to get into the pants of 13 year olds. And that China props up NK for this reason.
