The president of the University of Missouri has quit in the face of protests by African-American students, the football team, and faculty, over his alleged failure to address instances or racism on campus. In the meantime, students are apparently surrounding the protesters to keep the media from interviewing them. Do they not understand how protests work?

  • SeaWorld intends to phase its killer whale show out of its San Diego park in the face of protests by those who accuse the theme parks of abusing orcas. It will be replaced with a non-performance "orca experience" that sounds like a bunch of killer whales swimming around in a tank.
  • Fox Business is promising not to make the same mistakes as CNBC in tomorrow night's Republican presidential candidate debate. By the way, after the debate, John Stossel will host a special midnight show where libertarians will comment about what the candidates say.
  • Russia faces having its athletes booted from international competition over a massive doping scandal. Will they get banned from the Rio Olympics?
  • Three Michigan teens stand accused of plotting a shooting attack on a school. They apparently were writing about the plot on Instagram, which kind of seems like a really bad idea.
  • A federal judge has again ruled that the mass surveillance of Americans' metadata by the National Security Agency is unconstitutional. It probably won't mean much now, as the NSA will be shifting to new surveillance authorization rules passed by Congress by the end of November.
  • In this week's episode of South Park, citizens will decide they can do without a police force.

What's their position on taxing sugary drinks?

      1. Bobarian (Would Chip Her)   10 years ago

I doubt if it tastes all that sugary.

        Probably more like coppery vinegar.

  3. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

Doping among Russian track stars is apparently really bad.

Today's report includes several new allegations, including that Grigory Rodchenkov, the head of the drug-testing lab in Moscow, ordered 1,417 doping control samples destroyed to hinder WADA's investigation.

    1. Ted S.   10 years ago

        What is this? Soviet Russia?

        1. jesse.in.mb   10 years ago

Technically she's Slovenian. The image search for "hot Russian runner" degenerated into porn within a row and the results that were on topic were disappointing.

        Thank you Jesse!

    4. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

Why don't they name the drugs? Perhaps it isn't as bad as they want you to believe.

      1. mad.casual   10 years ago

Blood doping can be done without drugs but drugs *sorta* make it better or easier. I'm betting in at least some cases, they can't say and/or don't know. Probably plenty of cases where the question of "Which drugs?" is best answered with "Yes."

      2. Careless   10 years ago

well, if you read the link...

    5. Rhywun   10 years ago

Are we to believe that Russia hasn't been doping their athletes for decades, or that they "stopped" after glasnost?

      1. RBS   10 years ago

It's not about doping so much as greasing the palms of the testers and suppressing positive tests. With the sanction of the Russian government.

        1. The Last American Hero   10 years ago

Which has been happening since Rocky IV.

          1. RBS   10 years ago

If you really want to get down to it, it's about anti-doping assholes wanting to get their authoritarian on. And whining from the "integrity of the sport" losers.

            1. mad.casual   10 years ago

There's a difference? I thought the anti-dope people were anti-dope because of the integrity of the sport and the 'integrity of the sport' people were worried about the adverse effects of doping.

              1. Rhywun   10 years ago

Well, they all agreed to anti-doping. Play by the rules or GTFO.

    6. MarkLastname   10 years ago

Well, if they're all doping, isn't technically a fair race again?

      1. OneOut   10 years ago

        Simply have two different leagues.

        Doped or non doped.

I would love to watch the wide open doping NFL.

That would best Roman lion fights.

  4. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

A federal judge has again ruled that the mass surveillance of Americans' metadata by the National Security Agency is unconstitutional. It probably won't mean much now, as the NSA...

...isn't constrained by the United States Constitution?

    1. Bern-o-Matic 5000   10 years ago

Yeah, they'll just hide the metadata somewhere else.

  5. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

Tonight, Cook County might get an ammo tax:

Also on Monday's meeting agenda is a proposed tax on ammunition, which county Commissioner Richard Boykin said he told Preckwinkle she needed to support if she wanted his vote for the hotel tax.

The ordinance calls for "centerfire ammunition" of the kind "commonly used in rifles, pistols and revolvers" to be taxed at a rate of 5 cents per bullet. And it calls for less expensive, generally lower caliber "rimfire ammunition" to be taxed at 1 cent per bullet.

    1. Wasteland Wanderer   10 years ago

Is there anywhere in Cook County that you can actually buy ammunition?

      1. Brett L   10 years ago

I imagine some falls out of the police evidence locker.

      2. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

That's what my boyfriend asked me when I told him this. I think there's one place.

        1. Wasteland Wanderer   10 years ago

          I think there's one place.

Might as well call this the "Fuck those guys, lets send a bunch of business out of county" tax...

          1. Just say Nikki   10 years ago

That's what I call all the Cook County taxes.

        2. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

I'll look into it. I hope they ship to CA, some places don't.

          1. Restoras   10 years ago

I live in the not quite as gun stupid state of NY and I have to have my purchases shipped to an FFL. Most of the places charged a hefty mark-up but I luckily found a gunsmith near me that I can ship to and he only charges a modest fee.

            1. R C Dean   10 years ago

For ammo they make use an FFL? For freakin' ammo?

Something something "shall not be infringed" my ass.

      I'm shocked it's so low

      Something something "poll tax."

  6. Fist of Etiquette   10 years ago

Do they not understand how protests work?

I don't know. Defying all logic, theirs seemed to work just fine.

    1. Jerryskids   10 years ago

students are apparently surrounding the protesters to keep the media from interviewing them. Do they not understand how protests work?

My guess is the students have a pretty good idea how the protestors are going to come across if the media gets anywhere near them. There's a reason so many college students seem to want to be treated like spoiled-brat halfwit 8-year olds and it kinda gives away the game when you start talking to college students and realize how many of them are spoiled-brat halfwit 8-year olds.

    2. Careless   10 years ago

I'm fascinated by a feces swastika pissing people off. Are they really that hurt by someone insulting Nazis?

      1. Free Society   10 years ago

*Alleged* fecal swastika. A lot of these people who spend their time BlackLivesMattering are inventing stories of their discrimination, or sending themselves threatening letters to cry about it et cetera.

        1. Careless   10 years ago

I don't care if it was a painted shit swastika. It makes no sense as a shot at black people.

Ok, I know they're crazy... are they that crazy?

As long as he doesn't pull out celebrity impersonators to debate.

    1. Brett L   10 years ago

The libertarian moment continues to migrate away from prime time and into the "stoners and old people yelling at their teevees" slot.

      1. lap83   10 years ago

That's an unfair generalization of Reason commenters. Some of them are very vocal about not owning TVs

    2. B. Woodrow Chippenhaus   10 years ago

I suspect the show will just be people coming on camera to facepalm, then the camera moving to the next person.

  11. SIV   10 years ago

SeaWorld intends to phase its killer whale show out of its San Diego park in the face of protests by those who accuse the theme parks of abusing orcas. It will be replaced with a non-performance "orca experience" that sounds like a bunch of killer whales swimming around in a tank.

So the "killer whale show" is reduced to a "lame whale show". That should help their business model. Maybe they should add seals totally incapable of playing a bulb organ.

    1. Tonio   10 years ago

This was done without involving government, and somebody still found a reason (!) to whine about it.

      1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

CA had legislation in the works at one time. IDK what happened to it.

      2. SIV   10 years ago

This was done without involving government, and somebody still found a reason (!) to whine about it.

A legion of detestable man-child race baiters chased the Mizzou president out of his job for no particular reason other than his status as a white male in charge of something. They did it without government. I still think it's worth whining about to a certain extent.

    2. Apatheist ?_??   10 years ago

Looks like they will still be doing it at the San Antonio park. If they stop the show there I don't see any reason to ever go back.

        1. Brett L   10 years ago

Caffeine is probably the most effective PED for runners and cyclists. You just have to not take it for six weeks to get maximum return.

          1. Elspeth Flashman   10 years ago

Even a few weeks off will do something to boost it.

Thanks folks, I am here all week!

It will be replaced with a non-performance "orca experience"

    in which orcas abuse protesters.

    1. Trshmnstr, terror of the trash   10 years ago

      obligatory

    2. RBS   10 years ago

Not to be confused with the dolphin experience where patrons are raped repeatedly.

    3. PBR Streetgang   10 years ago

I'm not saying I would pay to see this....but I'm not saying I wouldn't either.

    4. Equinsu Ocha   10 years ago

They don't call them killer whales for nothing.

  16. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

""orca experience" that sounds like a bunch of killer whales swimming around in a tank."

They should just do what the protesters want, and blast each Orca right in between the eyes with a .50 caliber.

    1. Brett L   10 years ago

What if we throw wounded protesters into the tank for a true orca experience?

"Momma, Shamu bit his leg off!"

"That's the way they do it in nature, honey. "

      1. Pl?ya Manhattan.   10 years ago

They do need to learn to hunt.

And yes, the protestors here were calling for the release of the Shamus into the wild. Great idea.

        1. Trshmnstr, terror of the trash   10 years ago

Watch as we see what happens when domesticated whales try to interact with those hammerhead sharks! Oh, poor shamoo! I didn't know that killer whales had so much blood on the inside! It's still not stopping!

          1. Zeb   10 years ago

I'd be most worried about the other killer whales.

        2. Chinny Chin Chin   10 years ago

          Oy.

I compliment the protesters on finding a non-government solution, but am not too surprised at this. Attractive marine macrofauna attract a special wing of crazy from the environmental movement.

    2. Mickey Rat   10 years ago

It does not do what the protesters want and it does not do what the patrons want. However it gets closer to what the protesters want as the big stadium is now an obsolete structure.

    3. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

    Florida Cop

"WFLA reports Szeliga was suspended for one day and he now works as a detective in the sheriff's crimes against children unit."

You can't make this shit up.
Punishment: He has to go solve real crimes now. That'll show him.

      1. Brett L   10 years ago

This is why The Wire is the best cop show ever. It's so true to life.

      2. Pope Jimbo   10 years ago

Is anyone else worried that a guy who was a DUI cop and then shows up wasted at a MADD conference is now investigating crimes against children?

He might survive this fiasco, I'm not sure he will do so well when he is asked to go speak at a conference for exploited children and he shows up with a 13 year runaway girl.

      3. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   10 years ago

Bellevue police got kicked out of a Seahawks game because they were drunk, starting fights. Then a few weeks later, the same cop was stopped driving home "wasted". The officer that made the stop, called his girlfriend to come pick him up. No arrest made.

As punishment, he was taken off the bomb squad.

Now, I'm no 3d chess player, but wouldn't this be the very place you'd want this cop? I mean, the problem would eventually take care of itself.

        1. Raven Nation   10 years ago

the problem would eventually take care of itself.

Yeah, but the problem might take non-problems with him.

    2. Brett L   10 years ago

If this guy survives the scandal, he will be a legend in the department. I wouldn't go so far to say never have to buy a drink again, but a legend.

      1. R C Dean   10 years ago

He's not only survived, I'm pretty sure he's got a promotion.

I guaran-fucking-tee you that if I showed up at a public event drunk, I would be fired by the end of the next day.

Fox Business is promising not to make the same mistakes as CNBC in tomorrow night's Republican presidential candidate debate. By the way, after the debate, John Stossel will host a special midnight show where libertarians will comment about what the candidates say.

If they were going to try and make it different than CNBC, wouldn't adding someone who hadn't worked for CNBC be good?

    1. Rufus The Monocled Derp Slayer   10 years ago

Why do libertarians always get the midnight slot?

      John Stossel worked for CNBC?

Fun fact: The top two Google results for "john stossel cnbc" are Huffpo/DailyKos journolisting "reporting" that John Stossel is a "patholigical liar".

      1. Mazakon   10 years ago

No, but the two the article highlighted are from CNBC. Apparently there is one guy from WSJ.

      2. In League with the Dark Ones   10 years ago

He doesn't hold the right opinion so therefore he is a "pathological liar".

Three Michigan teens stand accused of plotting a shooting attack on a school. They apparently were writing about the plot on Instagram, which kind of seems like a really bad idea.

The good thing about social networking, is so many people who use it don't realize that other people can see it too.

    1. Elspeth Flashman   10 years ago

This. I know I am posting too late for anyone to read. But if you don't want people to know what you do, or who your friends are, don't leave your social media settings on "open." Derrp! I can now visit your employer, go to the same bar you're going to, etc. etc.

      1. lap83   10 years ago

Obnoxious liberals, who most need to follow that advice, are probably least likely to do it. They need their politics to permeate every aspect of their life and if you disagree then you're probably an intolerant teabagger. Keeping political beliefs private is totes letting the racist korporashunz win!!1eleventy

        1. Elspeth Flashman   10 years ago

          Sure, I can see that.

  22. Mazakon   10 years ago

Adults can now pay a woman $40/month for motherly care and judgement-free advice

Do you not have a mum? Or have a mum but she's far away? Or have a mum but you don't like her? Do you have $40 to spare? Then you can now rent yourself a mum.

Nina Keneally has established a business in New York City renting out her services as a mother. She'll listen to you talk about your problems. Make you some soup. Watch a movie with you.

    1. Diane Reynolds (Paul.)   10 years ago

Um, if it's judgement-free advice, that's not what I would call 'motherly care'.

    2. Mazakon   10 years ago

      EDIT: $40/hour

  23. R C Dean   10 years ago

Not to get all picky, Scott, but I think you put your "alleged" in the wrong place:

The president of the University of Missouri has quit in the face of protests by African-American students, the football team, and faculty, over his alleged failure to address instances of alleged racism on campus.

Is there any proof whatsoever of the rather pat just-so story about the pickup full of rednecks shouting "nigger" (which really just sets off my too-truthy-to-be-checked meter), or who did the shit swastika and why?

Because until those are validated as actual racist incidents, I see no reason to assume that they are.

    1. TheZeitgeist   10 years ago

Because until those are validated as actual racist incidents, I see no reason to assume that they are.

I do wonder. Fecal swastikas on doors? Rolling-coal rednecks shouting slurs? This sounds more like someone projecting their own stereotypes while making shit up.

      1. RBS   10 years ago

The truck thing sounds made up but could possibly have happened. The poop swastika sounds like home cooking.

"students are apparently surrounding the protesters to keep the media from interviewing them. Do they not understand how protests work?"

I think scott fails to recognize how THEY work. They get to collectively dictate their grievance and make demands - but they don't ever have to explain themselves or answer to anyone or even present an image to represent themselves. You are not allowed to shape your own view = they will tell you what to think

  25. GILMORE?   10 years ago

" John Stossel will host a special midnight show where libertarians will comment about what the candidates say."

    At MIDNIGHT?

Wow, not the usual "3AM, at an undisclosed location, to be broadcast on CB-radio spectrum, and only if you pay-per-view"? LIBERTARIAN MOMENT, MOM! WE FINALLY MADE IT

  26. Free Society   10 years ago

The president of the University of Missouri has quit in the face of protests by African-American students, the football team, and faculty, over his alleged failure to address instances or racism on campus. In the meantime, students are apparently surrounding the protesters to keep the media from interviewing them. Do they not understand how protests work?

They believe it works like a youtube video where you make really stupid arguments and you know the feedback will be tremendously negative, but as long as you disable the comments, you can pretend that the content is insightful and nuanced.

Personally, I'll be happy when people stop keeping killer whales in captivity. Keeping an animal that ranges hundreds or thousands of miles confined to a tank a few hundred feet on a side is just kind of depressing.

    1. Frankjasper1   10 years ago

True but arent all the whales ones who were born in captivity?

      1. GILMORE?   10 years ago

Well, you see... some whales are House Whales, and some whales are Field Whales....

      2. Equinsu Ocha   10 years ago

If they were born in captivity, that means their parents were kidnapped.

    2. R C Dean   10 years ago
