Trump's Radical Isolationism and the Crisis of White Middle-Class America
He's succeeding because he has both a scapegoat and a solution for hurting Americans
The Donald Trump phenomenon may be waning but that doesn't mean that his appeal is too. Many commentators

have pointed out that what's strange about The Donald is that he attracts many less-educated, low-income white voters even though he goes out of his way to make sure that they understand that he is not one of them. He constantly harps on how rich he is and how smart he is. Yet, instead of alienating them, he wins them.
Part of his appeal is his loud-mouthed, no-holds-barred, un-PC persona that takes no guff from establishment elites. But it's not just his style they are attracted to, I note in my column at The Week, they also dig his message.
White, working class America is in crisis. Death rates among 45 to 54 years old white men shot up from 1999 to 2004 even as they went down among Hispanics and blacks, a shocking study this week by Nobel laureate Angus Deaton and his wife Anne Case reported. And this is not due to rising car accidents or heart attacks. It is due to more suicides and addiction to prescription opiates, alcohol and heroin.
But why are white men doing this to themselves?
Ben Domenech at The Federalist points out because their prospects are bleak. The most vulnerable to the pathologies that Denton-Case identified are middle-aged white men with nothing more than a high school diploma. Thanks to intensifying competition due to globalization, well-paying jobs for their skill level are hard to find. However, disability welfare is relatively easy. The combination of the two factors prompts many of these folks to simply drop out of the workforce, all of which has a devastating impact on their marriage and psyche.
Writes Domenech:
[Imagine] you are one of the millions of middle-aged unemployed white Americans with a high school degree. Having moved from unemployment benefits to disability, you receive sufficient benefits to subsist – around 1,200 dollars a month on average – and to pay for the alcohol and drugs that help you self-medicate, in addition to what your doctor has prescribed. Your life is essentially one marked by hopelessness. You are statistically unlikely to ever re-enter the workforce.
For all too many Americans in this segment of the population, the things that make life not only endurable but happy are faith, now lost to us; family, which is fractured; community, which is disintegrated; and work, which most find hard to come by. The TV screen flickers with images of people living lives you could never hope to emulate. Your situation is bleak, and while our soma is better, it is still not a replacement for the pursuit of happiness.
Enter Donald Trump brandishing both a scapegoat and a solution for your predicament.
Trump's scapegoat is the world that he insists is making a fool of America's incompetent political classes and bilking ordinary Americans of their jobs and money.
And his cure is a radical isolationism backed with a mighty military that'll strong arm China, Mexico, Europe, you name it, into doing his bidding to "Make America Great Again."
This is a coherent if false and dangerous worldview. Why? Read my column here.

It is due to more suicides and addiction to prescription opiates, alcohol and heroin.
So, ban guns and drugs MOAR - problem solved. Duh.
Almanian! Solver of problems, maker of Great Americas!
Which is dumb because he is undoubtedly part of the establishment elite.
OT:
Do any of the firearm enthusiasts out there have any experience with FNH or HK pistols? Looking at something chambered in 9mm from these manufacturers.
I have an FNS-40, and I haven't had a single complaint about it since I bought it a couple years back. Granted, it's not the exact same platform as the FNS-9, but I imagine the differences between the two are relatively few.
Sorry - only Colt, S&W and Glock for me. Interested how you like either if you get one.
I had an FNS-9 that I very much regret selling; loved the ambi controls and had great balance and feel when shooting. Also learned a valuable lesson, never sell a gun, just buy more
Good advice. I still regret selling a winchester model 70 when I was in high school. Dammit.
I just bought one of these:
http://www.sigsauer.com/Catalo.....8-sas.aspx
I couldn't be more pleased. It is essentially a 1911 that fits in the palm of your hand or your pocket, has tritium night sights, is chambered in 9mm, holds 8 shots and I can hit pretty well with it. Very nice little carry gun.
I have always heard that HK are very good but never owned one. I have one of these:
http://www.beretta.com/en-us/92-fs/
I like it because it is hi-cap and very easy to shoot accurately. I never use it though, if I am going to have a full size gun I am going to carry a 1911 in 45acp or 10mm.
FNH seems a liitle in the pricey side. Not sure what more your getting for those extra dollars.
Springfield Armory XD series. Great guns. Reliable; no jams after many, many rounds. Outstanding ergonomic, point-and-shoot feel. My brother has HK that I like, but not nearly as much as my XD.
I have an H&K USP. Amazing firearm. Highly recommended.
What the hell is that... thing... growing behind his left ear?
I think he tucked a ferret back there, like a 50s greaser tucked a cigarette.
I can only assume this means Donald Trump smokes ferrets.
I believe he uses them as Fleshlights. Because "that natural feeling" - only the best for The Donald.
He's hiding a baby toucan.
WHYCOME SHIKHA NO LIKE TRUMP? SHIKHA! GRR!
I guess everything is a crisis now? Crisisghazi.
Crisisghazi
Does this mean we've finally moved on from adding "gate" to the end of words? E.g. "chrisisgate?"
I think you're trying to cover something up. I dub this: Crisisghazigate!
What are these disabilities and how do I get one?
I've qualified for disability since 1994. Stupid principles.
Same here. I won't take other people's money. I would rather crawl off into a ditch and starve than have to deal with the fedgov. I don't want them to even know I am on th eplanet.
My wallet thanks you.
Yep, because the government reduced your taxes by the amount that our rusticated friends declined.
Yeah, I know it is pointless because it all gets sucked into a black hole anyway, but it still isnt my money.
There's this thing called "debt" that the government routinely accrues when it spends more than it takes in.
You need to apply twice: the first time it's always denied, but the second time it's approved and you're on disability.
My old boss used to do some disability work. The people with legit, can barely function disabilities had the most difficult time getting benefits. Yet, every asshole with "fibromyalgia" had not problems getting a check.
A friend of mine has a son who has a serious mental and physical disability (can only move with the help of a walker and has the mental capacity of a toddler). Has been denied SSI three times. When he is eventually approved the first few years of payments will be used to offset how much it's cost in lawyer fees.
Part of that is the social-work spectrum. People with real disabilities often are trying to file on their own.
A lot of those healthy homeless guys you see with tans? Lot of 'em on SSI. You know why? Because the social-workers and people that work for the homeless help them apply, so the applications get filled out correctly, all the keywords are used etc.
You've essentially got educated professionals filling out the applications on their behalf.
In other words, Big Social Work.
Sounds like my father. He had a degenerative neurological disease that crippled him within 1 year of diagnosis and killed him within 5 years and it took him roughly a year of multiple opinions and interviews before he qualified. Meanwhile a few of the guys he used to fish with would claim a bad back, get cleared without a second thought, and spent their late-50's fishing five days a week in peace.
Perks of city employment and union membership was my best guess for how this happened.
From Soc Sec's own website:
" what's strange about The Donald is that he attracts many less-educated, low-income white voters...
....why are white men doing this to themselves?....""
Slate Star Codex points out = Trump has more minority support than Sanders
"....the [data] we have suggest that Donald Trump's supporters are about as diverse as any other Republican's... An August YouGov poll ....finds Trump in the lead with that demographic, getting 28% of the vote to runner-up Ben Carson's 19%. A Gravis poll with about 40 Hispanic Republicans finds Trump with 37% of their vote to runner-up Marco Rubio's 20%. A Nevada poll also finds Trump leading among Hispanics in that state,...head-to-head matchups of Trump vs. Clinton show Trump outperforming some past Republican candidates, including Mitt Romney and George Bush, in the share of Hispanic votes he would likely receive.
.... there is a candidate whom the [WHITE PEOPLE!!] narrative fits like a glove. A candidate who may win primary among whites, but loses in a landslide among minorities.....That candidate is Bernie Sanders.
According to the same YouGov poll...38% of whites support Bernie Sanders for President... However, only 13% of Hispanics support Sanders, compared to 63% for Hillary. And only 4% of blacks support Sanders....
Noted = the poll is bullshit. But scott's point is spot on
Wait wait... definition of terms before we start. Define:
White
Middle Class
Ben Domenech at The Federalist points out because their prospects are bleak. The most vulnerable to the pathologies that Denton-Case identified are middle-aged white men with nothing more than a high school diploma
So I can finally be a victim for something?
Where do I line up, how much is the check?
If you start taking a check from the government I can assure you, you will become a victim.
Thanks to intensifying competition due to globalization, well-paying jobs for their skill level are hard to find.
I like how we continue to conflate college degree with skill level.
You expect journalists (graduates, say, of Columbia School of) ever not to?
I see they made a movie about the Chilean mine accident where they had to drill a hole and lift those guys out. I wonder if in the movie the heroes who pulled that off will be portrayed accurately. My guess: NO.
Shikha you are wrong and also probably ugly. What kind of name is that anyway? Shikha. Is it Mexican? Let me tell you about Shikha's people. They want to come here to take all of our jobs and also be on welfare. Not to mention that they are rapists and drug dealers. Do you want your wives, your daughters, to be raped by the Mexicans they buy drugs from? Some, I assume, are good people as well.
When I am President I will get have Shikha and all the Mexicans deported. I will hire millions of good, hardworking Americans to round up those that are not good or hardworking and throw them out. They will all go to Mexico and will not be able to get back in. I will build a wall and make Shikha pay for it. I will negotiate a tough deal with the President of Mexico. He will agree to keep all of the people that we don't want, because of my negotiation skills. Once all the bad and lazy Mexicans are gone America will be Great Again. Everyone will be happy.
Does Shikha not have a job? If she has a job, then she took it.
So on point one, you're already in the hole. There's a qualified white man watching his flickering TV screen NOT writing this story because Shikha did.
Do you want your wives, your daughters, to be raped by the Mexicans they buy drugs from? Some, I assume, are good people as well.
Her name is Shikha, so she's already picked out their husbands.
Boom, I'm here all week.
The TV screen flickers with images of people living lives you could never hope to emulate. Your situation is bleak, and while our soma is better, it is still not a replacement for the pursuit of happiness.
Perhaps if the TV screen didn't flicker with commercials which say, "Injured on the job, discriminated at work, we'll get you money."
*begins to shake cane*
Back in my day, the tv commercials said things like, "Want to drive a big rig, want to be a legal secretary, we'll train you so you can find a good paying job".
Disability is now the goal, the job, the source of income.
Back in my day, the tv commercials said things like, "Want to drive a big rig, want to be a legal secretary, we'll train you so you can find a good paying job".
My wife watches daytime TV from 1 - 5 all summer and whenever there's a bullshit school holiday. Based on my experience on those days wehre I've been able to join her I'd say that the split between "come get job training!" and "SUE SUE SUE!" are roughly 50/50.
You know, I never realized that until now, but you might be onto something. The "call us and we'll teach how to be a disability/ welfare mooch" commercials have always been around, but it seems like they used to be far out numbered by the "we'll train you for a new career" commercials. I can't remember the last time I saw a truck driver school commercial. It definitely seems like there's a lot more "sue the shit of someone" or "learn how to be a moocher" commercials now. Sign of the times, I guess.
Do all of the articles today completely suck, or am I just low on fucks to give since it's Thursday afternoon of a really long and hectic week?
Maybe they are running "article sucking vs. comments spawned" experiment? Each time we post (I assume), better for the site*, after all!
*yes, yes, the woodchipper incident...
Yes.
With all due respect to Ms. Dalmia, here is a non-retarded analysis of Trump's appeal.
Instead of simply cribbing from 1000s of similar articles about the unwillingness of dumb hicks to vote for the media's favorite candidates, this First Things article suggests that Trump supporters know he's a self-centered blowhard with weird ideas, but they think these may be just the qualities to make him stand up to the big-spenders, something just about every other Republican doesn't have the guts to do.
Part of his appeal is his loud-mouthed, no-holds-barred, un-PC persona that takes no guff from establishment elites.
But what part? WHAT PART?
I haven't paid attention to the guy. Has he said that he will do that?
Am I the only one that occasionally listens to Mike Rowe?
The man is awesome!
The man really is a national treasure.
Structural employment is nothing new. White people with only high school diplomas permanently dropping out of the workforce in droves isn't new either.
See the rust belt in the '70s and '80s for examples.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_Belt#Outcomes
Isn't Dalmia from Detroit?
Shikha is from India, dude.
She wrote for the Detroit News, and she taught at Michigan State.
She knows all about the rust belt and what it did to pasty-faced, white-ass, peckerwood crackers.
Shikha lives in the Detroit area, although she is indeed originally from India.
A better illustration of the kind of white unemployment we're talking about here can be seen in the Broadway musical version of The Full Monty.
There are a couple of very powerful songs about what long-term structural unemployment can do to your self-esteem, including a funny, but not very, song about suicide.
There are a couple of very powerful songs about what long-term structural unemployment can do to your self-esteem, including a funny, but not very, song about suicide.
Is this why we should extend unemployment benefits until forever?
Like I said, the problem is still structural unemployment.
That and over taxation.
We tax people's incomes, which artificially inflates the cost of employing the unemployed. That's stupid. We should stop that.
Globalization is probably the last thing I'd blame.
If people that are 50+ (the people with the health problems we're talking about) are having a hard time finding jobs, it may be because they can't do things that seem simple to younger people--like use Word and Excel.
I certainly wouldn't blame it on not being overpaid to do mindless work.
And how does millions of low skilled people coming in from other countries not hurt unemployment?
Supply and demand also applies to labor. The more labor supply there is, the fewer jobs there will be.
Yeah, yeah, some of the increased population will create more jobs, but not outweighing the flood of people who come in.
Supply and demand also applies to labor. The more labor supply there is, the fewer jobs there will be.
That is now how supply and demand works.
If you increase the supply of something, without changing the nature of demand, then the price for it will go down, until demand has met supply.
The problem with employment in this country--and this has nothing to do with immigration--is that there is a price floor (minimum wage + cost of mandatory benefits) and there is low elasticity (labor law, "equal opportunity", unemployment insurance, workers' comp., etc.).
Immigration exacerbates these issues, but is not the cause of them.

OT Alert... OT Alert... (No, that's Off Topic, not Operating Thetan, fer ye Scienfoologists)
?So? So Much for Giving Your Child a "Religious Upbringing!"
http://www.sciencedaily.com/re.....121916.htm
Religious upbringing linked to less altruism
Children from religious families were less likely to share with others than were children from non-religious families. A religious upbringing also was associated with more punitive tendencies in response to anti-social behavior.
They said "They will know we are Christians by our love"....
Should've said, "They will know we are organized-religious-types by our hard-assed-ness".
"For the altruism task, children participated in a version of the "Dictator Game," in which they were given 10 stickers and provided an opportunity to share them with another unseen child. Altruism was measured by the average number of stickers shared.
"For the moral sensitivity task, children watched short animations in which one character pushes or bumps another, either accidentally or purposefully. After seeing each situation, children were asked about how mean the behavior was and the amount of punishment the character deserved....
"...children from households identifying as Christian and Muslim were significantly less likely than children from non-religious households to share their stickers. The negative relation between religiosity and altruism grew stronger with age; children with a longer experience of religion in the household were the least likely to share.
"Children from religious households favored stronger punishments for anti-social behavior and judged such behavior more harshly than non-religious children. These results support previous studies of adults, which have found religiousness is linked with punitive attitudes toward interpersonal offenses."
Wow you gave me a sticker! And it wasn't actually something you'd earned! What generosity!
And of course being social "scientists," these researchers didn't consider the possibility that imposing a more severe penalty on the victimizer might be showing empathy for the *victim.*
"Social 'scientists' are soft-on-crime lefties who lack empathy for victims, study finds."
Wow, good points, I hadn't thought of those...
What I really-really lust after is a good and fail-proof brain-scan method to see who offended intentionally and who offended accidentally, who genuinely regrets bad shit they've done, and who doesn't... Who "deserves" forgiveness and who doesn't... God-like powers to peer into the minds of offenders or possible offenders, wouldn't THAT be cool? Except in the hands of a despot, of course...
And of course being social "scientists," these researchers didn't consider the possibility that imposing a more severe penalty on the victimizer might be showing empathy for the *victim.*
Just give the victim a sticker and call it a day.
Government Almighty took away most of my freedoms... How many stickers can I get in return for THAT?!?! Maybe even a few colored ribbons to put on my chest?
I read in the memoirs of Daisy Bates, the black civil rights leader, about an incident involving her father.
Some white hooligans attacked her father and sprayed paint on him. When her father went to the sheriff, the sheriff shrugged it off as some good ol' boys having a good time, and refused to prosecute.
By the reasoning of these social "scientists," the sheriff had greater empathy than if he'd prosecuted the criminals. If he'd been all "punitive," that would have meant he really didn't have empathy.
Maybe they were swastickers.
Yes, or maybe they think charity should be used to alleviate suffering, rather than inequality. Since no one's gonna die if they don't get a sticker...
I mean, it's just pure speculation, but let's just say that if you saw that religious folk were unlikely to share stickers, but more likely to donate money in response to natural disasters and the like, that might explain it.
I have actually read (repeatedly) that libertarians and conservatives both (lumped together) donate more money and time (and even blood donations, as a specifically mentioned example) than liberals do, to private, voluntary charity. How that maps over v/s religiousness, I have no idea... One of the things I harp on, though, is, what the hell ***IS*** a religion, precisely, anyway? It seems to me that Government Almighty is the new religion, that has replaced God Almighty... In the old days, they stoically shrugged their shoulders, and said, "The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away, Blessed Be the Name of the Lord." Today we say, "The Government Almighty giveth, and the Government Almighty taketh away, Blessed Be the Name of the Government Almighty." As in, who the hell can fight "City Hall", anyway? Get out your Vaseline, bend over, and take it, if you are a producer... If you are a mooch, just plain "take it", no Vaseline or bending over required!
You know who else . . .
Yeah man, Trump has a FINAL solution ready for us! He's going to round up all the illegal humans and send them to, uh, Madagascar I think it was... And charge the natives and the lemurs and the fossae in Madagascar for the relocation costs... When the economics of that won't work out, maybe Trump and his flunkies can just delouse / gas all the illegal humans instead. ... Geez-um, what new and creative ideas will he come up with next?!?!
The guy with the swastickers?
Donald: Eres un Pendejo !!!
The Donald constantly harps on how rich and smart he is . Yet, instead of alienating the less-educated/low-income white voters, he wins them.
He could had simply pulled this off with the Latinos and had an even larger vote.
He could had just left that stupid "I'm building a wall" crap out and taken 2016.
Latinos LOVED Donald Trump and was looked up to by latinos for his success and for the fact that his industry hires latinos (especially illegal ones).
Donald: Eres un Pendejo !!!
Well, the headline says middle class, yet the article talks about working class.
So, as a middle class white forty-something I've seen the marginalization of white males starting about 15 years ago and getting worse as each year goes by. Singular and anecdotal as it is this is what I've observed first hand - my wife and I are both CPA's, went to the same school, started at the same firm etc. I can, in good conscience, assert that I developed greater skills than she after three years than she did in five. As far back as twenty years ago, desiring to move on, I habitually sent out resumes and got little notice and barely any interviews. Not long after, my wife decided to do the same, and with pretty much the exact same resume - granted with about a year and half experience differential - down to the layout, the font, the word choice etc etc, (I did her resume for her with my resume as the foundation) my wife got about eight interviews in less than two months and had a new job in less than eight week's time. Clearly, even twenty years ago, women were in much hotter demand than men, at least in my profession and particular niche. I think the gap has only widened since.
cont-
My brother was recently laid off from a large bank he'd been with for several years (probably nearly a decade). They laid off about a dozen and a half people - all white males. Subsequent to that layoff, there was another layoff - all white males. It's not a coincidence. And if it were justifiable based on qualification, so be it. But it's not. It's clearly an anti-white male bias and the fact that overall quality declines, who cares? It's all about the teh feelz.
And the difference between my wife and I in getting interviews has remained at about a 5 to 1 ratio, if not higher, over the last 20 years. I can go a year and a half with MAYBE three interviews, while my wife can get a new job in about three months, getting to choose between offers; again, with the same basic resume outline and largely the same background, if not in my favor as far as overall experience.
And we won't even begin to address how guys get shafted if the marriage ends etc. If my wife and I break up, I have little doubt I leave the nice house and am living in an efficiency eating weenie-beenies out of a can.
cont-
And we won't address the added pressures put on my job by the idiots in government as if I have nothing else to do, as a controller of a manufacturer, than to fill out endless census forms, navigate amateur hour like the ACA, and the other vast pantheon of the regulatory leviathan.
And why is your average, middle aged, middle class white man an alcoholic and cued up for a heart attack? It truly is a mystery. It must be all that white privilege I hear so much about - the opportunity to have pretty much all the real responsibility fall and fewer and fewer shoulders as the parasites feast.
What Alice is trying to say is that it's only fair and right that the oppressor class finally know what it feels like to be oppressed.
It's a free market and a right to work country.
The "Job Creator" is at liberty to hire and fire anyone with not cause what-so-ever.
Good Bless America....If you are a "Job Creator" and not one of those stooges that has to deal with livelihood disruptions.
And, if the white male employee doesn't like it, he can pull himself up by his boot-straps and be able to get himself together in the level playing field we have here between worker and "Job Creator".
a right to work country
No, it's not. Only 25 states, not including two of the most populous (California and New York), are "right-to-work" states, and that just relates to unionization. The EEOC and DOL have authority in all 50 states, and most states have their own versions of them.
the level playing field
What "level playing field" would that be, exactly? The government can fine you, force you into labor, throw you in prison, and outright kill you if push comes to shove, with impunity. No "worker" or "job creator" has that kind of power.
It's a veritable crisispalooza at Reason.
So not even Reason is immune to hysteria driven by some "crisis". I've seen no indication that the white population is dramatically decreasing. If they were, then it's BAD news for libertarians, because 110% of libertarians are whiter than snow.
"Our kind is dying off, we have to vote Trump now while we still have a chance" Come on.
Honestly, if the country became significantly less white, it would descend into a banana republic in a matter of decades. The non white left (often coming from collectivist nations) does not revere the constitution in any shape or form. They'll pay lip service to it if it aids "empowerment" or inclusion.
And ironically, the new non white majority will be even poorer than before, since Asian and Latino societies are notorious for their crony capitalist ways. And also the fact that most of them would approve of "living wages" and unaffordable social safety nets.
You trying to say us colored people couldn't keep America going ?
This racialist shit is fucking stupid correlative nonsense. If you selected the individuals most in favor of free enterprise from across the globe and they congregated together into the United States, then it would not descend into a banana republic regardless of skin color distribution.
Conversely, no amount of "maintaining the status quo" in some arbitrarily defined and ultimately meaningless manner is going to stop the already very obvious decline already proceeding apace. About the only saving grace is that most other places seem to be gleefully dashing headlong ahead of us.
Jesus jumpin' Hindu Dalmia, you can't resist it can you, you freak.
That's right, rub their noses in the shit and this time don't forget the rolled up newspaper. Let's all kick a bunch of people who have never done anything to anyone while they're down.
Hey Dalmia, guess what kind of crisis your beloved India is in. Care to guess? It's called, Being a gigantic clusterfuck piece of shit, where we like to gang rape women on buses, and we're all dirt floor poor and starving to death but too fucking stupid to eat a cow, crisis.
Of course you can't see that because you just think a dumbfuck religion (they all are) like Hinduism and being Indian is just the bestest and anyone who disagrees is just an ignorant piece of trash. Even worse are those apostates like Jindal. They deserve death for turning their back on the One True Way, huh Dalmia?
Foghornleghorn, don't feel the need to hold back. Please tell us how you really feel.
Nice post, Michael.
This is a coherent if false and dangerous worldview. Why? Read my column here.
I've been to Shikha town before. I do not want to go back.
The only good parts of her reason posts are when the commentariat calls her out for her slanted horrible writing
No one said it's the cause. Again, you oversimplify to binary assumptions. I DID say Immigration is A factor. And immigration policy is already being tinkered with--just by companies benefitting from it, not by the government that wrote it. While I agree that the government is fairly ineffective, I have more faith in it at least attempting to have the nation's people's interests in mind more than I do in the Mickey Mouse Club.
