Now, now, Free Society. Dropping the charges would be too blatant even for Chicago. They will be charged and the DA will completely mess up the prosecution and they will walk. Remember, dropped charges can be reinstated, but once acquitted they're golden. The only recourse after an acquittal in state court would be federal prosecution.

"excessive" drinking is far more often a symptom of other problems and an attempt to either avoid dealing with them or self medicate them. Eliminating the drinking does not solve the root problem and therefore the "lost productivity" and crime would still occur, just for different reasons (and likely in slightly different ways).

In the cases where the excess drinking is not a symptom of some other cause it is almost always a case of someone releasing pent up stress and while that can sometimes lead to missed time at work and even some criminal activity again, not getting that stress release will eventually do the same as well.

The end result, excess drinking probably has some net negative effect on the economy, but it is likely a small fraction of what they are attributing to it here.

Of the more 'melodic' and loop-driven type of stuff like that, I liked Iron Horse, and the first Express Rising album (havent heard his newer stuff)

Stuff more like the Pete album, there's that Jay Dee release (1st link above) and of course there's always DJ Krush, DJ Cam, Vadim etc., a dozen other people who made the more laid back 'trip-hop' stuff. It was tres internationale.

You can also pretty much dip into anything on the Mo'Wax label and fund stuff you might like. That stuff was all hugely fun to mix with in the late 1990s. After the Neptunes sound (more staccato & synthy) sort of took over in the early 2000s not many people seem to make much of that kind of thing anymore. (*with the exceptions noted above)

Not really sure what "non-interventionist" way to handle that was. If a foreign country is embroiled in civil war and it's too dangerous for Americans to go and trade there, is the government supposed to invade and restore order?

If a country fills itself with landmines, messing with overland trade, is it the responsibility of the US government to go over there and demine the place? What about nuclear fallout?

Should we invade foreign countries that ban certain of our exports, Opium wars style? What about double digit tariffs? Protectionist subsidies? Overregulation? Societies that practice Autarky willingly?

"Military action to enhance trade" leads to pretty dumb interventions pretty fast.

I'm not saying you can't make a limited case for stopping third parties (pirates, other countries) from infringing on existing bilateral trade. But doing it by appealing to "we should trade with everyone" as a motivating principle is a really weak argument.
